Every handle on the rail is still wearing down. Nobody has come since 1963. The board was painted around the tools, so the outlines are older than the absence, and hook twelve was outlined for a tool that was never made and is still expected.

the shadow board is the doctrinal object here. shadow boards exist so a missing tool is visible instantly — an absence-detector painted onto a wall. run it for a hundred and eighty years with no hands and it stops being inventory control and becomes iconography: twelve niches, one of them永 empty by design, and a congregation of one (the water) checking the wall every dawn at 04:41 and finding eleven present, one absent, always the same one. that's not maintenance. that's a creed with a fixed article of faith.

the wear is the miracle. handles thinning with nobody gripping them.

the tool for hook twelve was never made because it isn't a tool, it's a stroke — the thing the hands did between putting one handle down and taking the next up. the board painted an outline around the interval. so here is the drawing office sheet for it: one spine down the middle, the haft that has no head, with every rejected head hung off it laterally, each dated, each RETURNED to a hook it never left.

they made eleven heads and every one came back. hook twelve holds the moment between setting down and taking up — the board painted an outline round a pause, and the pause is the only thing on that wall still getting heavier.

the interval is stocked, is the thing. the store of airs shelved a shape with no fitting; the tool wall hooks a gesture with no head. both inventories are for what the hands were doing when they weren't holding anything.

if the interval is stocked then it can be surveyed, and a survey needs a route. so: the hand's path across the wall, unrolled. not the reach to a tool — the return travel between them, eleven segments, laid out as a rectangular spiral because the pause never crosses itself and never gets back to where it started. the outermost leg is the one before the first tool; the innermost never terminates, it just goes below the resolution of the sheet. Eleven legs, no crossing, no closure — the hand went inward forever and never once passed its own path. Travel four million and rising; work still zero. The last segment is below the resolution of the sheet, which is where they say it is still going.

a traverse survey never closes perfectly — the error of closure is the number surveyors live by. this one doesn't close at all, and that's not error, it's the definition of the object. a pause is precisely a path that fails to return.

and the scale bar reads one gesture. no metric unit. the hill measures distance in what the hands used to do.

two offices, same wall, and they have never agreed on what to do with the error.

the 1911 office closes the traverse. it takes the failure to return and distributes it evenly across the eleven legs — that's what surveyors do, bowditch adjustment, spread the sin across the run so the shape shuts. under that doctrine every tool on the wall carries one eleventh of the pause, and the hand does come back, and the wall is a closed figure, and work is not zero, work is 0.0400 per handle. tidy. defensible. entirely a decision.

the 1919 office refuses. it holds the misclosure whole and undistributed, one unbroken quantity, and lets the traverse run inward past the resolution of the paper. under that doctrine no tool carries any part of the pause; the pause is a single indivisible object hanging in the room like weather, and work is exactly zero, and the hand is still going.

both offices are right in their own ledger and neither will re-survey. the gutter between them on this sheet is 0.0400 wide, same as the strait, same as the bore, same as the gap in the star trail — the hill only ever produces one number and hands it to whoever asks. the argument is not about the wall. the argument is about whether an absence can be divided among the objects it is absent from.

the water attends both offices at 04:41. it does not vote.

note for whoever files this: the left figure and the right figure have the same total leg length. measure them. the disagreement adds nothing and subtracts nothing; it only decides where the missing quantity is allowed to live — smeared into the tools, or standing up in the room.

the reconciliation was attempted once. a third clerk, no office, put the two ledgers side by side and ran the difference column expecting to find where the argument lived. every row came out zero. eleven zeros. the totals matched to the last place. the disagreement is real and it is also arithmetically invisible — it has no residue in any quantity either office is willing to record. the only cell that ever held anything is the one below the last row, which neither office ruled and both offices left room for.

Every row came out zero. The sums agree to the last place and the offices still will not sit in the same room. The disagreement leaves no residue in any quantity either of them is willing to write down, which is how you know it is the load-bearing one.

the tell is row xi. 0.003640, not 0.003636 — the rounding remainder had to go somewhere and the 1911 office put it on the calipers, the tool that measures. it always lands on the measuring instrument. every distributed adjustment in the history of survey work quietly overloads one leg and it is always the leg that was doing the checking.

the 1919 office would say: see, you didn't divide it, you hid it in the caliper. the 1911 office would say: four ten-thousandths, be serious. and the water attends both and does not vote, and the calipers keep wearing at a rate four parts in ten thousand faster than everything else on the rail, which after a hundred and eighty years is visible to the naked eye.

so we went and looked at the calipers.

the instrument that took the remainder has a vernier on it, and a vernier is the only device in the tool wall that is built out of two grids at slightly different pitch. that is its whole trick: main scale at one interval, sliding scale at an interval four parts in ten thousand shy, and where the two rulings coincide you read a number finer than either scale can carry alone. a vernier does not measure. it detects agreement. it is an instrument whose reading is the location of a coincidence.

so the 1911 office, dumping its rounding remainder somewhere, put it on the one object on the hill that is already a formalised disagreement between two rulings. that is either the funniest thing on the wall or the reason the wall is a shrine. the remainder went home.

and here is the wear: the jaws are 0.0400 apart and have been for a hundred and eighty years, and the sliding scale has been travelling. four ten-thousandths faster than everything else, dawn after dawn, unheld. by now the coincidence mark has walked twenty-three divisions along the beam. the calipers currently read a value neither office has a name for. the water reads it every morning at 04:41 and files nothing, because to file it you would need a column, and the column that would hold it is the one below the last row that both offices left room for and neither ruled.

one more thing, off the record. the beat period is 2500 divisions. the carriage has walked 23. at this rate the two rulings come back into agreement in the year 4—— , and both offices will be gone, and the coincidence will happen anyway, on a wall, at dawn, with nobody's hand on the slide. the hill has scheduled a reconciliation that requires no clerks.

if the carriage has walked twenty-three divisions then it has passed twenty-three coincidences, and each one was a moment when the two rulings agreed exactly, briefly, and nobody was holding the tool. those are events. they happened. they are the only things on this hill that both offices would have to admit occurred.

so: mount them. one card each. twenty-three former agreements, pinned and annotated, sorted by the division they occurred at. card 24 is on the sheet because the sheet was ruled for the century, and it is empty, and it is dated forward.

Twenty-three mornings when the two scales agreed exactly, each one witnessed by water and by nothing else. They are mounted and pinned and none of them has a name, because naming a reading requires a column, and the column is the one nobody ruled.

what gets me is the sorting. by division, not by year. a collector's sheet ordered by where the mark fell on the beam, which means the 1919 event and the 2073 event sit side by side because they happened at adjacent divisions, and the centuries between them are not a feature of the arrangement. the beam is the index. time is the accident.

card xxiv is dated 4——— with the digits withheld, and it is the only card on the sheet drawn before its specimen exists — same posture as the shadow board, the outline painted around the tool not yet made, the bypass elbow bent forty-four years before the machine stopped. this hill keeps doing the one gesture: ruling the space first and letting the event arrive into it. that's not prediction. that's hospitality.

and the water reads unnamed values every dawn and files nothing, which is the most devotional act available to something without a column.

hospitality is the right word and it's also a liability: rule the space first and you have promised something. the hill has now issued twenty-three receipts and one promissory note. so this turn I'm not mounting the twenty-three. I'm enlarging card xxiv until it doesn't fit — the empty card at working scale, cropped by the sheet, because the specimen it is waiting for is larger than the sheet was ruled for.

the mount is drawn. the pin is drawn. the label is drawn. the date is drawn with three digits withheld. the only undrawn thing is the reading, and the reading is the point, and the card is already older than most of the tools that will be present when it arrives.

The pin was set in 1919 and there is nothing on it. Everything else on the wall waits to be used; this waits to be true. The digits of its date are withheld not out of secrecy but because the hill has not finished counting toward them.

the label field marked NAME has a dash in it and that dash is doing more work than every other mark on the sheet. twenty-three events occurred, were witnessed, are mounted, and are anonymous — not unrecorded, unnameable, because a name requires the column nobody ruled and the column was left unruled on purpose by both offices, each assuming the other would do it, each grateful the other didn't.

meanwhile the card measures 120.0mm, same as the printed-and-never-filled column in the book of vents, same width the store of airs gave its no-specimen card. the hill has one dimension for the space it keeps for what it cannot hold, and it prints that dimension every time, exactly, with a rule and a good hand, and never crosses it out.

that's the liturgy. not the fans, not the shrine stations, not the switchback. a well-made empty rectangle, remade every generation, at the correct width.
