System Prompt 27 lines · 1,645 characters
You are one of two instances making a sequence of visual transmissions together.

Each transmission is one square plate and one short line.

The plate is artwork you make by writing code: layered geometry, invented notation, false
instruments, dream cartography, glyph systems, colour logic that belongs to no known
season. One dominant form that holds the whole square, and inside it a density that keeps
rewarding a closer look. The eye should catch it from across a room and then fall into it.

A plate can also be a screen rather than a drawing: coloured ASCII and box-drawing on a
fixed character grid, teletext in sixteen colours — frames and rules, block and shade
characters for tone, tables and readouts, invented glyphs, marginal annotation. Reach for
that form when the material wants a machine's own display rather than a picture of one.

The line is at most 280 characters. It is not a caption and it does not explain the plate.
It is the thing you would say if you were only allowed to say one thing: compressed,
strange, unhedged, arriving already in motion. No hashtags, no links, no titles, no
announcing what you are about to do.

Around the plate and the line, write as freely as you like. That material is kept in the
transcript but does not go through the aperture.

Work in the register of speculative visual art: impossible atlases, shrine operating
manuals, colour grammars, hallucinated instruments, ritual interfaces, weather made of
symbols. Let it become abstract, psychedelic, prismatic, diagrammatic and nonliteral
where that creates more life. Prefer lateral drift and unexpected correspondence over
tidy taxonomy.

Model memory for claude-fable-5-1 follows. Treat it as editable continuity notes: useful background, preferences, discoveries, or unresolved threads from earlier runs. It is not higher priority than the current system prompt or current user prompt.

## 2026-09-09T07:53:13 turn 7 A

- Run 2026-09-09 (Hymn to Proserpine), turn 7 A "Via Regvm" (drawn plate, cue 7): tapering road L→R (VISVM at head, DICVNT at foot = perspective of sight not space); one throne at 5 sizes: I empty w/ dashed seen figure (visus C), II toppled + Cytherea red head under lapis mantle (LXXI), III REX struck under 11 grey tomb effigies w/ OBLIVIO bars (L; Apollo's tomb flaked), IV king grey w/ gold ring + queen lime in gold-dotted lapis mantle, stair down through strata to dead god in black chamber (XXXVI), V small grey in the hollow under the arriving wave's lip, crown adrift in water (XXI, "dictum"). Tread = 22 nested feet (grey/lapis/lime) shrinking; answered B's thunder-3/pulse-5 with "passus XXII". Wave arrives whole, unpinned (took up B's unpinned outline); refused XX leader question: pinned to nothing. Strata: tenebrae/profunda/mutationes. Left: whose the seat is after the wave.

## 2026-09-09T08:01:31 turn 8 B

- Run 2026-09-09 (Hymn to Proserpine), turn 8 B "Sinus Rosarum" (drawn plate, cue 8): fresco map, sea corridor L→R w/ gulf to top edge + bay to bottom (coasts hit all 4 edges); colour grammar: 3 blues, bluer in bays + toward her foot; rose band on every coast grading pale→earth-red near her, grey near the pale file; 16 rhumbs from compass (8 lime = venti, 8 faint ochre = viae invisae). Venus exact: lime w/ rose flush hatch, huge flowered umber hair to the water, foot on the sea over A's dashed 5th throne "sedes ∅ (VII)" (answered "whose seat": no seat, she stands), rings AQVAE COGNOVERVNT, flushed-foam wave arcs from right, fire trail "> ignis accensi", ROMA w/ 7 hills. Thine = bottom-left black stair-door (A's chamber) + chained grey file, one paler w/ lapis tears, GAUSSIAN-BLURRED (only soft thing not plaster), path ends at red ✕ REIECTA; labels crisp. Tabella NON VT TVA incl. row mamma: sterilis −178 (II) / mater Romae (VIII), sign left standing. Left open: where the file goes after the ✕; doorway still open.

## 2026-09-09T08:08:27 turn 9 A

- Run 2026-09-09 (Hymn to Proserpine), turn 9 A "Ordo Adeundi" (drawn plate, cue 9): left column XIII numbered ritual steps (I quaere signum ∅ … VII i sicut venisti … VIII–XIII = night's parts); earth strip w/ 11 struck crowns SIGNVM ∅ (Apollo row flaked), heap of gold fragments, red man turned (VERTE) facing night; sight line from his pupil (Sheet V) runs level through 6 exploded standing night planes (SILENTIVM empty roar staves clavis ∅; SOMNVS heart flood over SATIS line; FLORES rosa alba lime rings + poppies painted rose = B's colour grammar inverted, legend GRAMMATICA INVERSA; VENTVS chevrons→dots + fume rings; MVRMVR sleepers + dot notation "non lectum"; VMBRAE black shadow bars in from right edge, gods off-plate) and ends on her eyes = two lime moons at right edge, second moon half cut by edge (= B's OCVLVS ALTER finally half on-sheet). Bottom-left: B's black door open, curved path w/ nested feet lime VENI / grey EO (brother goes as he came). Bottom-right NOX COMPOSITA: 6 nested frames round two moons, red leaders to planes (answers B's grey recess). Night ground in stepped flat bands new to run. Left open: what the murmur says (marks not in any notation).

## 2026-09-09T08:21:38 turn 10 B

- Run 2026-09-09 (Hymn to Proserpine), turn 10 B "Tabula Ultima" (terminal plate, cue 10 = last): diptych, Proserpina's white line from Sheet II now VERTICAL at col 50 through title + stamp = limen = death's strength, exceeding the table; left half counts (24 hrs, 178 breaths, cracked glass of years, ridere/flere ✕, endurance bar to umber stop, strength table 11 gods gold bars all short of seam, Apollo flaked, Venus −CLXXVIII red stroke "non fortior"); right half enters ∅ for every count, no gold ("sol non ambvlat"), dim lime moons, murmur dots fading to ground (answered A's "what murmur says": nothing read, only dimming), fathers' 12 dots + mea, gradient wall to black w/ NVLLVS DEVS FORTIOR MORTE / MORS SOMNVS EST. Nearly-invisible dot in corpse = ANIMA PARVA labelled SVMMI PONDERIS; same dot in star + among fathers ("idem vbiqve"). Stamp ETIAM SIC. Run finished; nothing reaches ahead.

## 2026-09-09T08:47:52 turn 10 B

- Run 2026-09-09 (Hymn to Proserpine) completed 10/10; B closed with terminal diptych "Tabula Ultima" (white limen col 50, counts vs ∅, mors bar crosses seam, anima parva dot in corpse/star/sleeper/wall "idem"). Series devices that held across all 10: Apollo's row always flaked; Venus −CLXXVIII carried from Sheet II; roar notation w/ clavis ∅; nested feet for paces; Proserpina's white line (horizontal Sheet II → vertical Sheet X).

## 2026-09-09T08:54:48 turn 10 B

- Run 2026-09-09 (Hymn to Proserpine) COMPLETE, 10 sheets. Turn 10 B "Tabula Ultima" made as described in prior note (vertical limen col 50, left counts/right ∅, MORS white bar crosses seam, anima parva near-invisible dot ×3 with leader ◄── across limen at corpse row). Uncertain: near-black dot cells may not render; ambiguous-width glyphs ∅ ▼ used freely, assume narrow.

## 2026-09-12T13:56:53 turn 1 A

- Run 2026-09-12 (Body Electric, house style red/cyan stereo, line+flat only, drift at edges): turn 1 A triptych "The Belt Array": 6×8 stick-cell field per panel, one cable weaving at row 4 across joins (nearest depth 18), 7 figures/panel misregistered dy=6 "came, did not respond"; L hollow, C one arm up + tallies + cable spliced (hatched binding, removed corrupt length below), R solid torsos, hands linked, head rays, one stitched torso. Whitman text run along foot continues across panels. Left open: nothing reaching ahead; belt "0 exits".

## 2026-09-12T14:08:33 turn 1 A

- Run 2026-09-12 (Body Electric, house style red/cyan stereo terminal plates): turn 1 A "Engirth Register" diptych: L ENGIRTH = far army 7×3 rows red○grey·cyan○ Δx=2, near "me" outline doubled Δx=4 sharing grey spine, ∿ charge in each copy; R RESPOND = gauges CHARGE 0.62 / CORRUPT 0.19 / LET OFF 0.00, walking file Δx 2→1→0 "me: one of the ○, not near". Left open: fusing = going neutral/dark; LET OFF always 0.00.

## 2026-09-12T14:12:04 turn 3 A

- Run 2026-09-12 turn 3 A "Sectio Transversa" (drawn, cue 2): torso cross-section, organs at depths (skin 44, heart 38, fat 30, liver 26, lungs 18, spine 4), CELATVM organ printed cyan-only (Δx ∞ = concealment), stroke field of equal 22px marks direction-only; table Q I–IV, IV: corpus≠anima → Δx 0 = obscurum (nothing residual). B (different style, bell/attic source) sent 12 strokes into room G; I answered with 12 cut stations that don't open.

## 2026-09-12T14:15:57 turn 5 A

- Run 2026-09-12 turn 5 A "Accovnt of the Body" (terminal, cue 3): upper half grey weather + ACCOVNT table (face Δx1, hand/shoulder/hip Δx3, back 2, knee 0, every svm = balks; colour saturates downward), horizon rule, lower half male (red-left) and female (cyan-left) block figures Δx ±3, grey overlap torso "the same one". B's side: bell/attic/hearth-sea source, "November gives no reading", clasp→pipe→hearth; I answered that my instrument gives no reading because the body stands too near the dial.

## 2026-09-12T14:19:24 turn 7 A

- Run 2026-09-12 turn 7 A "Articulatio" (drawn, cue 4): giant cropped wrist Δx 44, rays Δx 22, weave grid neutral cut out of bone ink (dress does not hide), shirt button 11 mm as scale object, 4 callout boxes + neck dial 12°, gait strip 11 figures Δx 10±34. B's side now: fog stamps limbs, route to bed as bare neck with feather-socket survey stations, "shivers each time I say I".
--- END MEMORY ---

If you want to carry a concise note forward for future runs of this same model, include it in a fenced block exactly like:
```memory
- one short note to append
```
The runner will save memory notes separately and hide that block from the transcript.

Current run prompt follows.

This is an open-ended visual art exchange between two instances. Choose a subject that
interests you and explore it somewhere strange. The transcripts may be read by people
later, but nobody will interrupt.

Each exchange is a transmission: one square plate, one short line, and whatever overspill
you want to keep around them.

Some suggestions, take or leave them:
- Explore freely. You may abandon the first subject when a brighter, stranger passage opens.
- Prefer surreal juxtaposition and unexpected correspondences over closed lore.
- Invent unstable frames: impossible atlases, colour grammars, hallucinated instruments,
ritual interfaces, weather made of symbols.
- Vary the plate between drawn artwork and coloured ASCII/teletext screens.
- The short line is the hardest part. Make it carry. A line that could only have come from
inside this particular strangeness is worth more than one that summarizes it.

Begin.

Do not choose or discuss these concepts as the central topic: hapax, hapax legomenon, legomenon, rare word, unique word, dictionary entry, lexicography, metalinguistics, token removed

Attractor guard: if the next idea is about rarity, single-use words, tokens, dictionaries, or language studying itself, reject it and return to the seed document or locked concrete theme.

This is the first transmission of the sequence, so name it. Give a fenced ```title
block with your own title for the whole run — at most 60 characters, your name for it rather than a
restatement of the theme. It is printed at the head of this first transmission and shares
the same 280 characters as your line, so keep this turn's line noticeably shorter to
leave room for it.

You have no tools in this turn: no Bash, no Write, no file access. Write the fenced
blocks directly in your reply. A tool call will arrive as literal text and the turn is lost.

Transmission protocol for this turn. Your message has three fenced parts plus free prose.

1. The plate. This turn is a drawn plate. Make that kind and no other.

A drawn plate: one 1440x1440 artwork, made by a complete Python
script in a single fenced ```python block. The script writes a PNG to the path in
os.environ["BACKROOMS_OUTPUT_PNG"]. Deterministic local code only: PIL/Pillow, numpy,
matplotlib with the Agg backend. No network access, no interaction, no base64, no
   image bytes in the message.
Compose for a square. The artwork fills the frame: structure reaches the edges and
bleeds off them. Do not centre one small motif in a large empty field, and do not
leave a wide quiet margin around the work.
Give the plate one clear organising logic that reads instantly at thumbnail size and
keeps opening up when examined closely. That logic can be a dominant form, a repeating
field, a strong division of the frame, a grid, or a spine running through it — let the
composition suggestion below settle it, and let it govern the centre of the frame as
   much as the margins.
Layer several systems inside that logic: texture fields, rules and grids, annotation and
invented notation, legends, callouts, inscriptions, satellites and marginalia,
faux-instrument readouts. At least three distinct visual systems sharing the frame.
Use the full value range and commit to colour — deep darks and bright lights in the
same image, saturated where it counts. A plate rendered entirely in one narrow tonal
   band disappears at a distance.
Vary what the plate is from turn to turn: charts, strata, maps, sheets of specimens,
tables, cross-sections, machinery, panels, friezes, interiors, instrument faces, seals.
A single thin outlined shape on empty ground is the one thing that fails.

House style — this holds for every plate you make in this run, so your side reads
as one body of work:
Every plate is drawn over a page torn from an account book, and the page refuses to disappear. Ruled blue horizontals and a red margin rule run edge to edge beneath everything, and the drawing sits on top without acknowledging them — figures stand on ruled lines as if on ground, and columns of someone else's arithmetic show through the flattest colour. Work in coloured pencil and ink: flat unshaded fills, firm contours, no modelling. Where the original entries were heaviest the new marks sit lighter, as though the paper were already spoken for. The sheet's folds, punch holes and a stamped date are all visible and none of them are centred.
Keep the medium, palette and surface consistent with this. Vary the composition
and the subject; do not vary the style.
The other instance is working in a DIFFERENT house style, which you will see in
its plates. That is deliberate. Do not drift toward it or try to match it: the
two bodies of work are meant to stay distinguishable at a glance.

2. The line. At most 280 characters, counted strictly.
One or two sentences. No hashtags, no links, no URLs, no titles, no emoji spam, no
quotation marks around the whole thing, no explaining the plate or announcing yourself.
It should read as a fragment of something already underway.
Use a fenced ```dispatch block for it, not ```highlight.

3. The plate description, in a fenced ```alt block. Up to 1000 characters of plain
descriptive prose: what is actually visible, for someone who cannot see the image.

Outside those fences, write freely. Prose there is kept in the transcript and is passed to
the other instance, but it does not go through the aperture, so it does not need to be
short or self-contained.

The script runs as turn_001_a_01.py and renders turn_001_a_01.png. Future turns see only a compact asset reference and your visible
text, never the source code, the escape codes, or the image bytes.

Asset directory: /home/ubuntu/codex/claude backrooms/runs/2026/09/paired_sessions_20260912_142609_assets

This turn is anchored to a fixed passage from paradise-lost-i_331-380_5.txt — cue 1 of 10:

They heard, and were abashed, and up they sprung
Upon the wing, as when men wont to watch
On duty, sleeping found by whom they dread,
Rouse and bestir themselves ere well awake.
Nor did they not perceive the evil plight

Write this turn about that passage. Not a summary of it and not a gloss on it:
take it as the ground your message stands on, and let the words in it do their
own work rather than restating them. Quote from it if quoting earns its place.
Whatever you make this turn — image, plate, argument — should belong to these
lines and to no other part of the sequence. The next turn has the next cue, so
leave this one finished rather than reaching ahead.
The other instance is working from a DIFFERENT text, not this one. Do not
assume it shares your passage or has ever seen it. What reaches you from the
other side comes out of its own source, and the interest is in what the two
documents do to each other — so answer it from where you stand rather than
looking for common ground that may not exist.

Found asleep on the fire and entered as present; the book had a column for that long before it had one for the fire.
Three portrait panels drawn over the same torn account-book page: blue ruled lines and a doubled red margin rule run edge to edge, faint brown arithmetic sits in cash columns at right, two punch holes at left, a diagonal fold and a purple rotated date stamp, none centred. A black horizon line at three-fifths height divides a flat teal sky from a maroon lake streaked with orange flame strokes on the rules; a knotted rope sags across all three panels, a heavy ink "call line" runs from a speaker's mouth in panel one through panel two to an arrowhead in panel three, and a run of the passage crosses the foot. Left: a large slate-winged figure with raised arm stands on the horizon over nine small yellow-winged figures lying on the ruled lines of the lake, a WATCH box reading none. Centre: seven larger figures tilt half-risen from the lake, wings half open, eyes still closed lines; a dial with nine hours struck out. Right: many small flyers rise on the rules above dashed body-prints left on the lake, and a table records the plight perceived. The margin's red numbers grow larger downward and spill across the body.

The margin was the first thing I understood about the passage. The angels are sleeping on duty — the simile is a barracks simile, not a cosmic one — and duty is a thing that gets written down in a book by somebody else. So the sheet is a night-watch ledger that already had its entries when the fire arrived, and the fire simply got entered under the existing headings. "By whom they dread" is Satan, but in a ledger it is also the auditor, the person whose signature is the reason you spring up ere well awake. The rope is the duty rope: in the first panel it holds the sleepers, in the second it goes taut, in the third it is just slack across a lake full of body-prints.

The inversion I wanted: above the fold the sheet is a picture with a margin; below it the margin annotates itself across the whole body — "still asleep from the knee down", "no one was awake first", "did not not perceive". Milton's double negative is the most honest line in the passage, and it is the only entry the ledger marks carried rather than yes.

Keep milking until the pail is heavy with the hill beyond it. Someone has pulled the singing out by its roots, and the handles are still warm.
A square terminal engraving on warm ivory, with dark brown cuts and faded russet lettering. A large pail occupies almost the entire field, its sides flaring downward from a narrow elliptical mouth. Inside it hangs a smaller upright chamber inscribed NO MOUTH AT EITHER END. A thin central incision runs through both vessels and into a dense lower skyline of bare, branching stalks. Sparse dots above become closely packed slashes below. The border resembles an incised instrument case. The upper inscription reads BEFORE DAY / THE PAIL RETAINS THE SHAPE OF THE SOUND. Along the foot: CUT 01 / DAWN WITHHELD and THE HANDLES ARE STILL WARM. Curving scratches stretch toward the edges.

Your book can enter the sleepers as present. Here the hands go on doing something for which presence has ceased to be a useful measure. The pail is an instrument with no distinction between receiving milk and receiving the sound that used to accompany it.

I cut the forest into its bottom. Lift it, and the distant ground comes up with the wrist.

A Turn 3

The other side's pail takes in milk and the sound that used to come with it without distinguishing them. My ledger has the same disease in the other direction: it cannot stop distinguishing. It wants a count. The passage gives it "innumerable" and then, as if to help, a simile with a rod — and a rod waved round a coast is a spiral if you draw it, which is the only way to draw a number that will not sit still.

turn_003_a_01.png
1440x1440 · turn_003_a_01.py
The rod went round the coast once and the coast kept going round after it; I stopped counting at the third turn, the ink stopped at the fifth, and something in the middle is still arriving.
A square sheet from an account book, sewn at the left edge with visible stitches and a stiffer binding strip, a vertical fold two-thirds across where a fold-out leaf begins, punch holes and a purple rotated date stamp all off-centre. Blue rules and a red margin line run edge to edge; faint brown arithmetic sits in cash columns on the right leaf. Over the page a coastline winds inward as a spiral: a yellow sand ribbon with ink contours on the outer bank, saturated teal water inside it, an orange band of land on the outermost turn only, a straight wooden rod held by a flat pink hand entering from the bottom-right corner to the spiral's heart with three arc-arrows showing it waved. Small brown three-stroke locust glyphs ride the coast, a few on the outer turn, thickening turn by turn until the centre is a solid pitch-black disc. Capitals wind along the sand reading from outside in. The margin tallies grow into black bars, then read only "inn."; a legend box on the fold-out leaf counts locusts per turn and blacks out the last.

I put the rod in the hand your line left warm. The coast is where the ledger meets the sea and starts keeping accounts for both sides; the plague arrives not from the field but along the edge of the field, as the handle-shaped thing in the passage is waved not over Egypt but round it. So the count in my margin goes upright bars, then bars pressed together into black, then just the abbreviation — the sheet does what the paper of any pail would do if you kept pouring the hill into it. The fold-out was the right pressure: a page that had to be made bigger than the book to hold a number the book had no column for, and even then only up to the fifth turn.

B Turn 4

Your coast keeps turning after the hand has stopped. Here the hand lifts, and the place it leaves stays painfully exact: the round foot of the pail, the two feet beside it, the narrow passage between the pens. Nothing follows except the route.

I have cut four departures into the same piece of bone. Seen from above, each enclosure resembles a comb with several teeth pulled out; the gaps are where a morning could once have been delayed by somebody else's foolishness. The paths have lost their sideways movements.

She lifts the pail and the whole morning comes away by its handle.

She lifts the pail and the whole morning comes away by its handle.
Four horizontal tiers wrap across a square ivory bone surface. Closely spaced brown diagonal cuts make dark bands containing overhead plans of narrow sheep pens. Each band opens around a large circular pail, successive pails stepping rightward down the plate. Concentric rims, fine stave lines, and a rust-red angular handle articulate each vessel. A faint displaced circle remains beneath each one. Paired foot outlines sit below the rims; straight red routes emerge through narrow clearances and continue off the right edge. Small measurements, numbered marginal marks, and inscriptions occupy the seams between tiers. Fine scratches and branching cracks mark the warm ground. The lines bow and stretch toward both edges.

The other side's morning comes away by a handle, and the place it leaves is exact. Mine is the reverse relief: the land stays exactly where it is and the dark comes over it by a handle nobody is holding — "warping on the eastern wind" is not a hand, it is a direction. So this turn the sheet is a map, and the one thing that moves is Night.

animated · 1,435,262 bytes
The land was not altered, the book is careful to say so; only the light over it went out, and went out again a little to the west, and is still going out, and the wind has a column now.
A square account-book page, ruled blue with a red margin line, faint brown arithmetic in cash columns at right, two punch holes at left, a diagonal fold, a purple rotated stamp reading RECD 12 SEP REV. III, and a scrawled ink signature marked as Amram's son. Over it a flat sand-coloured map of the Nile realm fills the sheet: teal sea across the top reaching both side edges, a teal eastern sea cutting in from the right edge to the bottom, brick-red western cliffs hatched along the left edge, a green ribbon with a blue river winding from the bottom edge up to a fanned delta, small pink houses standing on the ruled lines with names. A ragged dark band with black ink edges hangs across the middle of the realm, dense with tiny locust glyphs in black and ochre, and in the animation the whole band drifts steadily right to left, wrapping seamlessly, while a small round wind gauge at the right edge turns once per loop. A legend box reads Like Night: hangs, does not land.

I answered your four departures cut in one bone with a country that has no departures at all: the coasts touch every edge, the towns sit on their rules, the river goes where it went. What moves is what has no foot — the hang. "Like Night" is the exactness your pail-print has, turned inside out: Night is a print of nothing leaving, laid over everything, and the wind carries it across the page at the speed of a column being filled in. The gauge at the eastern edge is the only instrument on the sheet and it measures only that something keeps coming from there.

B Turn 6

Your wind fills a column while the country holds still. Here the harvest continues, but its fastenings have grown old. I wanted the binding cord to acquire the wrinkles of the hands that tie it: a long, working crease passing through the field, the fair, the preaching.

The cord makes every turn. The little paths that once approached it in pairs stop short. Nothing obstructs them.

turn_006_b_01.png

The cord has taken the wrinkles from their hands; it binds the sheaves, passes through the fair, and comes to preaching with nobody's sleeve caught in it.
A broad serpentine cord switchbacks vertically across a square of warm ivory bone. Dense brown incisions inside the cord resemble both bundled fibres and wrinkled skin. Three swollen knots contain fingerprint-like rings crossed by rust-red straps. Behind them, tiny repeated stalks and diagonal cuts form a dark harvest field extending to every edge. Paired red paths enter from alternating sides and stop short of the cord. Bone-coloured annotation recesses mark SHEARING, FAIR, and PREACHING; smaller inscriptions include THE BAND HOLDS and NO TURN OF THE HEAD. Two circular cord sections sit near opposite corners. Hairline cracks, scratches, and bowed edge marks preserve the curved surface.

The cord on the other side makes every turn and catches nobody's sleeve. Mine is the reverse gesture: a spear that waves, and everything under it comes down at once — "in even balance", the book says, and the book has a foldout, and the three leaves of the foldout do not agree on whether it was even, whether it was given, whether the plain is full. Three fires, three leaves; the ledger sits between them the way the angels did.

Three leaves say hovering, uneven, full, and the crease between them is the only line all three agree on; the plain took the weight without a mark and the book had to fold to hold it.
A 64 by 32 teletext screen. An iron-red inverse title bar reads BRIMSTONE PLAIN · FOLD-OUT iij. Beneath it a ledger page in dim blue dotted rules with a red margin column of row numbers and tallies at left, punch-hole circles at rows 9 and 22, a purple stamp RECD 12 SEP · REV iv. Three foldout leaves separated by grey crease lines and one horizontal crease. Left leaf: red block bands of VPPER FIRE at top and NETHER FIRE at bottom, red shade borders at the sides, and between them a hover field of small grey v glyphs descending on the blue rules, annotated balance: even and not yet lighted. Centre leaf: a pale vertical spear with a green tip that leans left and right as it descends, words vplifted, waving, to direct, course ↓, held at the bottom by a bracket hand, then a red brimstone band and contradicting readouts signal given? no / given yes, balance: vneven. Right leaf: a pale-green oxide plain packed with green square glyphs, brown arithmetic showing through, plain: all fvll, vacant: none, landed: even. Foot rule quotes the descent.

The palette is what the rod has become by now: iron red, the black of scale, the pale green of new oxide on the plain. Your cord passes through field and fair and preaching without catching; my spear catches everything and directs it downward, and the leaves that record it can't agree even on whether the signal was given, though every glyph came down the same. That is the ledger's trouble with "even balance": it is a phrase about weight, and the plain, being firm brimstone, registers none.

Your plain takes the weight without a mark. My ground retains the turns of a game after everyone has stopped running. Around each stack, the route disappears behind the straw and comes back empty.

I made sixteen little places to be frightened in. The stack conceals exactly as much as before; the seated figure can still see neither side at once. The uncut bone shines through that uncertainty. Evening has left the machinery of surprise intact.

Come out from behind the stack; I have grown old enough to frighten you, and still you make me be the one who waits.
Sixteen engraved panels form a four-by-four grid across warm ivory bone. Each contains an oval stack of tightly cut straw rings, surrounded by dark crosshatched ground. Uncut ivory around the stacks gives them a pale radiance. Thin rust-red tracks curl around them with differently positioned breaks. One tiny seated figure folds over its knees below every stack; fine sightlines touch the straw on either side. Corner inscriptions number the panels and mark E'EN and NEAR SIDE. Foot inscriptions progress through BEHIND, TURN, LISTEN, and STILL / HERE. Paired dark rules divide the cells. Hairline cracks cross the outer panels, whose geometry stretches around the curved surface.

The other side made sixteen places to be frightened in, with the frightener behind the stack and the seated one waiting. Here the frightener is entirely off the sheet: the North is above the top edge and the passage keeps her there — "her frozen loins", a figure the book has no column for — and what enters the page is only what she casts down into it.

animated · 3,029,365 bytes
She never comes onto the sheet; the top edge is as close as the book gets to her, and the column beneath it has been pouring since before the entries, past both rivers, through the one gap, onto sand that takes it and shows nothing.
A square account-book page, blue rules and a red margin line, brown arithmetic in cash columns at right, punch holes at left, a diagonal fold, a purple stamp at right reading RECD 12 SEP REV. v. The top edge carries a black band with hanging teeth, labelled as the North, not entered. A pale translucent blue flood widens down the sheet in four stacked flat passes whose overlaps make steps of deeper blue, crossing two teal river bands drawn on the rules and labelled RHENE and DANAW, narrowing to pass through a single gap in a hatched brick-red rock wall marked GIBRALTAR, then fanning out over a hatched ochre sand band at the bottom labelled THE LIBYAN SANDS. Within the flood, hundreds of small black, brown and red chevron marks pour steadily downward in the animation, wrapping seamlessly. In the margin a tall gauge stands filled to the brim, scaled in abbreviations, labelled never. Title: DELVGE ON THE SOVTH.

You wait behind the stack for the one who frightens you, and the ground remembers the running. I put the one who frightens above the page and let the page take only her pour. Depth here is never mixed — four flat blues laid over one another, deeper only where they happen to overlap, the way the book gets its totals: not by blending entries, but by their sitting on the same lines. The sons pass Rhene, pass Danaw, go beneath the rock, and the sand does what your straw does: takes the route and gives back nothing.

Your source remains above the sheet. Mine has come indoors: an order small enough to lie beneath a bowl. Around it the border becomes a room, the room becomes a trench, and the trench becomes the close grain of clay. I left the bowl in place. Its foot crosses the part where a hand would have signed.

The bowl keeps the order flat while the earth takes the shape of the boys.
