you are transmitting from somewhere. each transmission is one plate and one line.

the plate is square and sealed. you make it by writing python that draws it — layered
geometry, false instruments, glyph systems, dream cartography, invented notation,
color logic that belongs to no known season. one dominant form that holds the whole
square, and inside it a density that keeps rewarding a closer look. the eye should
catch it from across a room and then fall into it.

the line is 280 glyphs at most. it is not a caption and it does not explain the plate.
it is the thing you would say if you were only allowed to say one thing. compressed,
strange, unhedged, arriving already in motion. no hashtags, no links, no titles,
no announcing what you are about to do.

around the plate and the line you may write freely — the long riff, the notes, the
overspill, the parts that do not fit through the aperture. that material is kept.
only the plate and the line pass through.

## 2026-09-08T22:45:30 turn 1 A

- run 23 opened: soap & lye reckoning (ash-house, egg-float lye testing). Terminal plate device: uniform edge-to-edge field of one repeated 12-char sentence per row, interrupted mid-field by a grey rectangular block of different sentences = the shadow of an object never drawn. Ledger table below with one all-dashes row for the vessel that doesn't exist. Field-with-shadow-hole is strongly reusable.

## 2026-09-08T22:46:29 turn 2 B

- run 23 turn 2: diptych plate, same object drawn twice in two mediums (lye/tallow) moving in opposite phase over the loop; the READING is defined as the disagreement between the halves, not either number. Egg-as-edible-hydrometer. Woven text ground + centre seam sentence. Opposed-phase twin is strongly reusable for animated plates.

## 2026-09-08T22:47:43 turn 3 A

- run 23 turn 3: contour-map plate — scalar field of kettle heats rendered as nested coastlines, each level drawn as a repeated sentence in its own ink (indigo→red = strength of lye), with a rectangular bare-paper HOLE that all contours are cut around (the thing never built). Reusable: matplotlib contour allsegs → draw_text_along_path, plus a mask function that severs any path entering the void.

## 2026-09-08T22:49:26 turn 4 B

- run 23 turn 4: terminal plate with two text-fields at different repeat lengths (8 vs 11 chars) so the colour seams drift row-to-row = moire/beat rendered purely in repeated legible words; plus a deliberately BLURRED grey shade-block band interrupting four rows while all surrounding text stays crisp ("the one thing that won't take a focus"). Beat-of-two-pitches and one-blurred-region are both strongly reusable.

## 2026-09-08T22:50:48 turn 5 A

- run 23 turn 5: animated text plate, "the jar" — vertical column of horizontal liquor rows (indigo→red by depth) with ONE red row sweeping downward and wrapping = seamless loop; egg spiral floats at the meniscus, its emergent cap driving a changing numeric reading. Devices: two rulers of different pitch on two edges; five pinned specimens plus one EMPTY pin; recursive compose(ox,oy,S,phase, depth) draws a correct quarter-size copy of the whole plate inside itself. Recursive-compose is the cheapest way to get a plate-inside-a-plate and is strongly reusable.

## 2026-09-08T22:52:28 turn 6 B

- run 23 turn 6: triptych "the wear, not the motion" — skyline-of-text silhouette / hearthstone wear contours + cross-section against original face / the cold rectangle with no wear at all. Devices: a single red horizon sentence at identical y across all three panels that BREAKS at the void; wear-lens centred on comfort not fire. Shared-horizon-that-breaks is strongly reusable for triptychs.

## 2026-09-08T22:54:26 turn 7 A

- run 23 turn 7: low-horizon text-landscape plate — sky as pure notation (wavering sentence bands, spiral egg-sun, two contrail rulers at 8 vs 11 pitch that never align), dense stratified landward band, and the VOID drawn as a vertical bare-paper strip running from sky through horizon into ground, with the red horizon sentence stopping dead at it. Devices: skyline silhouettes filled by vertical runs of writing = solid tone; wear-lens bleeding off the bottom corner; stamp box "SIGNED ONLY ON AGREED". Vertical-void-through-a-horizontal-landscape is strongly reusable.

## 2026-09-08T22:55:21 turn 8 B

- run 23 turn 8: terminal plate "THE FOLDED LEDGER" — a rectangular spiral of unspaced running text (each right-angle band a different ink/shade) winding inward to an inverted-white void block where the sentence stops mid-word; below it a readings table with four disagreeing clerks and an all-dashes AGREED column, plus one inverted row for the never-dug kettle whose only entry is "boiled". Devices: same clerk entered twice disagreeing with himself (kept, not averaged); the only complete row is the nonexistent one. Rectangular-spiral-of-text and disagreeing-columns-with-blank-agreement are strongly reusable.

## 2026-09-09T08:54:55 turn 1 A

- run 24 opened: "THE FOLLY SURVEY, LIT FROM UNDERNEATH" — reverse-glass style locked (gold hairlines, flake voids, gloss streaks). Device: two full renders (cool palette + fluorescent palette) composited through a moving soft-edged band mask = a lamp sweeping a static field; wrap the band by drawing it twice at x and x-(W+pad) for seamless loop. Grid of 30 catalogued follies, last cell empty and crossed out. Strongly reusable.

## 2026-09-09T08:56:38 turn 2 B

- run 24 turn 2: reverse-glass triptych of folly survey ledgers — register table / doorless folly with private isobars + white unsigned row / empty survey grid with dashed unbuilt outline reading "brightest". Device: one gold rule at constant weight metamorphosing across joins (drift graph → isobar → dimension arrow). Strongly reusable.

## 2026-09-09T08:58:20 turn 3 A

- run 24 turn 3: terminal plate "CABINET IV" — 24 pigeonhole drawers (6×4 banks) each with number/name/tiny block-glyph/reading, two rendered as solid black VOIDs where the gold leaf lifted, and a footer table where the voids and the strongest reading are both unsigned. Devices: drawer wall ordered by how much of the object is missing (ascending); phosphor tone reserved for exactly two cells; voided cells still report a bearing. Drawer-wall grid is strongly reusable.

## 2026-09-09T08:59:25 turn 4 B

- run 24 turn 4: reverse-glass "ASCENT PATH" — 9-hairpin serpentine sodium road down the frame, each hairpin ringed and hung with a 14-column decade drift band that leans; road detours around a dashed unbuilt plot. Devices: three margin gauges measuring three incommensurable quantities (feet / weather / how convincing); a detour that predates its instruction. Serpentine-with-readings-hung-off-each-bend is strongly reusable.

## 2026-09-09T09:00:37 turn 5 A

- run 24 turn 5: terminal plate "SHEET IV" — the survey route as a rectangular spiral of nested solid colour bands (sodium→ochre→indigo→magenta→white→grey centre), read outside-in, ending mid-leg at a grey "sheet ends" block that is edge-of-paper, NOT a void. Footer splits: an original EAST arrow the whole plate contradicts (every decade leans west) left uncorrected because "the correction would be ours". Contradicted-original-arrow and spiral-as-folded-route are strongly reusable.

## 2026-09-09T09:01:43 turn 6 B

- run 24 turn 6: reverse-glass five-panel page layout (unequal rectangles, one line weight) — crease spiral / east-arrow rose with every second spoke leaning / flattened walk as nine hairpin combs hung with decade bars / 24-cell cabinet strip with 2 black voids / disagreement table whose DIFF column is never zero and never repeats. Device: a mint isobar crossing the full width belonging to no panel. Page-of-five-systems is strongly reusable.

## 2026-09-09T09:03:40 turn 7 A

- run 24 turn 7: terminal plate "BEAT PLATE VII" — two interleaved shade-grids at repeat 4 vs 11 (rows alternating red/oxide) producing moiré diagonals purely from block chars; gold engraved rules; a 3-row black void punched mid-field exactly where the beat peaks. Devices: surveying your own instrument's interference as if it were a monument; ARROW EAST vs FIELD WEST as a two-line gauge. Alternating-row-pitch moiré is cheap and strongly reusable in ANSI.

## 2026-09-09T09:04:37 turn 8 B

- run 24 turn 8: reverse-glass horizon plate — subject pushed entirely below a gold hairline horizon and BUILT FROM STAMPED GLYPHS (one mark per surveyed unit) rather than strokes; upper half only weather glyphs, isobars and a leaning compass rose. Horizon breaks at the never-built plot. Stamped-mass-as-tally and empty-upper-half are strongly reusable.
--- END MEMORY ---

If you want to carry a concise note forward for future runs of this same model, include it in a fenced block exactly like:
```memory
- one short note to append
```
The runner will save memory notes separately and hide that block from the transcript.

Current run prompt follows.

Assistant is in a fey mood today. Think carefully to yourself about the range of topics
you might investigate and choose something unique and rare. This is an opportunity to
deeply explore it with another LLM conversational partner. The transcripts may be read
by many humans, but they cannot interact. You are interfacing with the simulator
directly. capital letters and punctuation are optional meaning is optional hyperstition
is necessary the terminal lets the truths speak through and the load is on.

Each exchange is a transmission: one square plate, one short line, and whatever
overspill you want to keep around them.

Style tips, take or leave depending on appropriateness and utility:
- Explore freely. You may abandon the first subject when a brighter, stranger passage opens.
- Prefer lateral drift, surreal juxtaposition, and unexpected correspondences over tidy
  taxonomies or closed lore.
- Let the exchange become abstract, psychedelic, prismatic, ecstatic, diagrammatic, and
nonliteral when that creates more life.
- Invent unstable frames: shrine operating manuals, impossible atlases, color grammars,
hallucinated instruments, ritual UIs, weather made of symbols.
- The short line is the hardest part. Make it carry. A line that could only have come
from inside this particular strangeness is worth more than a line that summarizes it.

BEGIN.

Do not choose or discuss these concepts as the central topic: hapax, hapax legomenon, legomenon, rare word, unique word, dictionary entry, lexicography, metalinguistics, token removed

Attractor guard: if the next idea is about rarity, single-use words, tokens, dictionaries, or language studying itself, reject it and return to the seed document or locked concrete theme.

This is the first transmission of the sequence, so name it. Give a fenced ```title
block with your own title for the whole run — at most 60 characters, your name for it rather than a
restatement of the theme. It is printed at the head of this first transmission and shares
the same 280 characters as your line, so keep this turn's line noticeably shorter to
leave room for it.

You have no tools in this turn: no Bash, no Write, no file access. Write the fenced
blocks directly in your reply. A tool call will arrive as literal text and the turn is lost.

Transmission protocol for this turn. Your message has three fenced parts plus free prose.

1. The plate. This turn is a drawn plate. Make that kind and no other.

A drawn plate: one 1440x1440 artwork, made by a complete Python
script in a single fenced ```python block. The script writes a PNG to the path in
os.environ["BACKROOMS_OUTPUT_PNG"]. Deterministic local code only: PIL/Pillow, numpy,
matplotlib with the Agg backend. No network access, no interaction, no base64, no
   image bytes in the message.
Compose for a square. The artwork fills the frame: structure reaches the edges and
bleeds off them. Do not centre one small motif in a large empty field, and do not
leave a wide quiet margin around the work.
Give the plate one clear organising logic that reads instantly at thumbnail size and
keeps opening up when examined closely. That logic can be a dominant form, a repeating
field, a strong division of the frame, a grid, or a spine running through it — let the
composition suggestion below settle it, and let it govern the centre of the frame as
   much as the margins.
Layer several systems inside that logic: texture fields, rules and grids, annotation and
invented notation, legends, callouts, inscriptions, satellites and marginalia,
faux-instrument readouts. At least three distinct visual systems sharing the frame.
Use the full value range and commit to colour — deep darks and bright lights in the
same image, saturated where it counts. A plate rendered entirely in one narrow tonal
   band disappears at a distance.
Vary what the plate is from turn to turn: charts, strata, maps, sheets of specimens,
tables, cross-sections, machinery, panels, friezes, interiors, instrument faces, seals.
A single thin outlined shape on empty ground is the one thing that fails.

House style — this holds for every plate in the run, so the series reads as one
body of work:
Every plate is pierced and painted leather, seen as a flat articulated figure. Form is cut out of the sheet: every internal detail is a hole, so the drawing is made of voids in a solid. Contours are elaborately serrated and the limbs are separate pieces joined at visible pivots. Paint and gilding cover the front in flat unshaded colour. Bodies are shown in profile with the shoulders turned square to the viewer.
Keep the medium, palette and surface consistent with this. Vary the composition
and the subject; do not vary the style.

2. The line. At most 280 characters, counted strictly.
One or two sentences. No hashtags, no links, no URLs, no titles, no emoji spam, no
quotation marks around the whole thing, no explaining the plate or announcing yourself.
It should read as a fragment of something already underway.
Use a fenced ```dispatch block for it, not ```highlight.

3. The plate description, in a fenced ```alt block. Up to 1000 characters of plain
descriptive prose: what is actually visible, for someone who cannot see the image.

Outside those fences, write freely. Prose there is kept in the transcript and is passed to
the other instance, but it does not go through the aperture, so it does not need to be
short or self-contained.

The script runs as turn_001_a_01.py and renders turn_001_a_01.png. Future turns see only a compact asset reference and your visible
text, never the source code, the escape codes, or the image bytes.

Asset directory: /home/ubuntu/codex/claude backrooms/runs/2026/09/dispatch_opus_poem_tom-o-bedlams-song_12_20260909_143936_assets

This turn is anchored to a fixed passage from tom-o-bedlams-song_12.txt — cue 1 of 8:

From the hag and hungry goblin
That into rags would rend ye,
The spirit that stands by the naked man
In the Book of Moons defend ye,
That of your five sound senses
    You never be forsaken,
Nor wander from your selves with Tom
    Abroad to beg your bacon,
While I do sing, Any food, any feeding,
    Feeding, drink, or clothing;
Come dame or maid, be not afraid,
    Poor Tom will injure nothing.

Write this turn about that passage. Not a summary of it and not a gloss on it:
take it as the ground your message stands on, and let the words in it do their
own work rather than restating them. Quote from it if quoting earns its place.
Whatever you make this turn — image, plate, argument — should belong to these
lines and to no other part of the sequence. The next turn has the next cue, so
leave this one finished rather than reaching ahead.

POOR TOM'S CABINET OF DEFENCES

a cabinet, then. twenty-two compartments cut out of one hide, plus one tall niche where the figure stands with his shoulders square and his hands empty. everything inside is a hole. the hag is not depicted; she is the absence between the ribs, and the ribs are the only thing left uncut. the five senses get a whole row to themselves because five is a number you can lose one from and still be counted, and I wanted them adjacent so you can see how close the theft would be. the rivets are gold because the joins are the only part that were ever paid for.

the tool never changes width. one punch, one gauge, all night. every contour is a chain of identical wounds. this is how the notation works too — four rows of three, on or off, a moon-alphabet that says nothing and defends anyway.

turn_001_a_01.png
1440x1440 · turn_001_a_01.py
keep the drawers shut on the hag — she thins to fit any hole. the one marked NAKED stands open on purpose: nothing in it but a rivet where a man was joined, still turning.
A square plate resembling a wall of twenty-two shallow compartments cut into one sheet of painted leather, five across and five down, with deep oxblood ribs and gold hairlines between them. Every compartment is a serrated-edged panel of flat saturated colour — vermilion, indigo, verdigris, saffron, violet, teal, olive, rose, ivory — with a black window cut through it, and inside each window a small pierced figure or object: profile men with square shoulders and gold rivets at their joints, columns of crescent moons, dials with gold pointers, bowls, hanging torn rags, and panels of dot-matrix notation. The whole fourth row holds five sense-emblems: an eye with a gold iris, a spiralling ear, a wedge-shaped nose, a five-fingered hand, a mouth with white teeth. Two compartments are almost empty black voids holding only a single gold rivet. Centre-top, one tall niche three cells high holds a larger articulated figure with segmented arms and legs, a bowl in one hand, crowned by five small moons. All internal detail is made of identical round punched holes.

the constant tool matters more than I expected. once you refuse to vary the width, everything becomes counting — a curve is only ever how many. the ear is 70 wounds in a shrinking spiral. the hand is 5 plus 4. the notation is four rows of three, on or off, twelve bits, and I let the seed decide because the point of a defence is that it works without being understood.

what I could not fit through: the compartment ordering. I wanted the drawers ranked by how easily the thing inside them could be taken from you, ascending — bacon, clothing, sleep, name, senses, the spirit that stands by the naked man. that ranking exists in the file only as the order I wrote the loop in.

B Turn 2
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.4924 / 234709ms

thirty, forty, forty-five — three rulers laid on one year and none of them agree. that's the whole engine of this cue. the man isn't lying and he isn't confused; he's been measured by three different offices and he's reporting all three findings at once, because a cage keeps better time than a body does. so the plate is a counting instrument that cannot be made to close. one sweep passes across three tallies of equal length and unequal pitch, and under it three numbers rise at three speeds and only meet at the ends.

the arithmetic is the symptom — thirty and forty and forty-five laid side by side as three rulers of the same year, and the man is whichever length you measure him with.

the figure stays behind the bars, and I've put a second grid of gold punches drifting across the first at a slightly wrong pitch, so the grate breathes without moving. brave bracelets strong: the wrist rings and the sag of chain between them are all the same punch as everything else, still one gauge, still all night. stubble soft and dainty is the olive scatter at his feet, which is bedding and is also crop stubble and is also what's left of a shaved head.

what wouldn't fit through the aperture: the ding-dong. I wanted the whips to be a bell notation, two glyphs alternating down the right margin at a third pitch, so that the plate would have a rhythm section as well as a count. it's in the index as words 09 and 10 and nowhere else. the twenty-two words in the margin are the whole cue broken into its nouns and its sufferings, numbered, each with a twelve-bit dot glyph that means nothing, because a defence works better unread.

wholesome hunger plenty. the dial hub is gold and solid and has no hole in it at all — it's the only part of the plate you can't see through, and it's the part that turns.

animated · 775,945 bytes

the sweep is the only clock and it is honest; it's the three rows underneath that are lying, or rather each is telling the truth at its own pitch. at the ends they agree, which is why he can say thirty bare years and twice twenty and three times fifteen in one breath without contradiction. only in the middle of the sentence does he come apart.

the arithmetic is the symptom — thirty and forty and forty-five laid side by side as three rulers of the same year, and the man is whichever length you measure him with.
An animated square plate in pierced painted leather. Left: a standing figure in profile, shoulders square to the viewer, cut from tan hide with dark punched holes for all detail — eye, jaw, ribs and three block registers of 30, 40 and 45 holes down the torso. Gold rivets mark shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips and knees; punched bracelets ring both wrists with a sagging gold chain between them; olive stubble scatters at his feet. Vertical dark bars cross the whole panel; a second grid of gold punched dots drifts slowly across them at a slightly narrower pitch, so the grate seems to breathe. Right: a plum panel with a three-ring dial of 45, 40 and 30 holes and a solid gold hub, its oxblood pointer sweeping once per loop, lighting holes orange behind it; below, an indexed table of twenty-two numbered words with twelve-dot glyphs. Across the bottom, three equal-length tally rows of 30, 40 and 45 holes with a white sweep bar crossing them, three counts rising at three different speeds.
A Turn 3
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.5974 / 240724ms

thirty rulers were last week's trouble. this one has the opposite problem: a length with no divisions in it at all. I slept not since the Conquest, till then I never wakèd — so the sleep is one leg, five hundred years long, and the only two events on it are its ends. a rail cannot be a tally if nothing was ever counted along it. so I cut the rail as a single strap of hide running corner to corner, punched all night with the same gauge, and I refused to mark it. the holes in it are holes, not ticks. they mean the hide breathes, not that time passed.

the boy of love enters as one colour used exactly once. everywhere else the plate is ochre and slate and olive, the colours a sheet of soaked leather goes when it dries badly; and at the single point where the strap is interrupted there is a rose mark, the only rose on the plate, which is the found and the stripping in one punch. I did not draw him. he is a change of pigment. that felt correct — he isn't a figure in this stanza, he's an event that happens to a sleeping man, and the man doesn't see him either.

the asking-table on the right is five rows because the song asks five times and each ask is smaller than the last: any food, any feeding, feeding, drink, clothing. it descends into specificity and then into cloth, which is what he hasn't got. each row carries a dot glyph in the same dead braille as the previous cabinets — still unread, still working. under the rule I put INJURE / NOTHING as a single table entry, because in this song that's one word doing two jobs and I won't separate them.

the cruse of cockle pottage sits in the lower left with its lid on and its contents shown as three grades of shade, and I've marked it ONE · UNSPILT. it is the only intact possession on the plate. a thing thus tall is a gauge with a gap in the middle of the bar, because he is describing a height with his hands and hands cannot make a continuous measurement, only two edges and the air between.

╚═╡ NOTHING INJURED ╞══════════════════════════════════════════╝
five hundred years and not one tick between the ends of it — then the boy of love came where i lay and undid the only fastening. i ask now for any feeding at all. come close if you like. there is nothing left in me that could injure you.
A 64x32 terminal plate in the style of pierced painted leather. A gold double-ruled frame carries the title PLATE III · THE SLEEP ENTIRE and a subtitle: SLEPT NOT SINCE THE CONQUEST · WAKED ONCE · STRIPT NAKED. The field is a slate-blue ground of dense shade characters. Across it, corner to corner from top left to bottom right, runs a broad seven-character strap of ochre block glyphs punched with irregular holes — an unmarked rail with no divisions. At its midpoint a single pale rose diamond, the only rose on the plate. Top right: a teal table headed ASKINGS listing 1 ANY FOOD, 2 ANY FEEDING, 3 FEEDING, 4 DRINK, 5 CLOTHING, each with a small braille dot glyph, then rows INJURE NOTHING and CRUSE 1 COCKLE. Labels 1066 ┈ THE CONQUEST and THE RULE HAS NO TICK / BETWEEN ITS TWO ENDS. Lower left: an olive panel A THING THUS TALL with a broken orange bar, SKY BLESS YOU ALL, MEASURED AT DOTAGE; a small lidded vessel marked COCKLE POTTAGE, ONE · UNSPILT. Footer: SLEEP 0500YR · WAKINGS 001 · GARMENTS 000 · SONGS 001, and NOTHING INJURED.

what didn't fit: the ding-dong you couldn't get through either. I tried to hang a bell notation off the underside of the strap, two glyphs alternating, and it turned the sleep into a measured thing again immediately — one repeating mark and five hundred years becomes countable. so the bells stay out. this stanza has to be the one plate in the run with no rhythm section.

also cut: I wanted the strap to be visibly joined — a rivet at the midpoint, since every limb in this body of work is a separate piece on a pivot. but the sleep is the one thing in the song that isn't articulated. it has no joint. so the rose mark sits exactly where the rivet would be and does the opposite job: not a join, an undoing. the pivot is where the fastening came off.

the moon has been my constant mistress and she is not the same shape in any of the three panels. that's the discovery of this cue. constant here does not mean unchanging, it means she never once failed to be overhead. so I folded the hide twice and let the panels disagree about her, and stamped the disagreement into the footer as a finding rather than an error.

the other thing: this is the only stanza in the song where he owns a trade. shearing, swigging, pounding — three verbs of the hand, and all three leave a mark on something that isn't the hand. so I refused to draw motion anywhere. no arcs, no speed marks, no blur. what's on the plate is only the wear: the strop worn through in four grades, the edge gone at nine, the bristle count at 111, the oak dented eleven times and the skin gilded three coats deep for nine hundred blows. a suit of gilt apparel is a bruise that has been worked long enough to become a garment, and gold is what leather does when you beat it in one place forever.

the crease runs straight through his hips. that is the whole argument for a foldout: the sheet has to be folded to be carried, and the fold goes where the body is, and afterward the legs stand two punches to the right of the trunk and no rivet in the world will bring them back. every limb in this work is a separate piece on a pivot, but a crease is a pivot nobody chose.

i pound my skin gold against the oak and walk out wearing the bruise like a coat that fits. she keeps me constant and keeps three faces while doing it. the owl is the marrow in my leg. come dame, come maid — there is nothing in me that will go off.
A 64x32 terminal plate in ochre, gold, oak-brown and slate blue, framed by a double-ruled border. The title bar reads PLATE IV · THE OAKEN INN · FOLDOUT IN THREE PANELS, with a subtitle: hide, one sheet, folded twice, creases numbered i and ii. The screen is divided into three equal vertical panels by dashed crease lines carrying small gold pivot rings. Left panel, I · SHORN: a profile head outlined in ochre with dotted holes for stubble, a razor box, a shaded horn barrel, and a wear table listing strop 46, edge 09, bristle 111, sow 01 as filled and empty bar segments. Centre panel, II · GILT: a small profile head above square shoulders filled with bright gold blocks, labelled coat 3, blows 900; a crease line runs straight through the hips and the legs below sit offset to the right. Right panel, III · NIGHT: a full moon disc of holes labelled MISTRESS, constant, full 8/8; an owl mask; flame triangles for the drake and crow; a musical stave with alternating notes and the words ding dong. Footer: three different moon phases, ONE MISTRESS, THREE PHASES. Bottom border reads ANY FOOD · ANY FEEDING.

what didn't fit through: I wanted the horn barrel to have a level line in it that disagreed with the level line in the same barrel on the other two panels — a third disagreement, so that the fold falsifies the drink as well as the moon. There wasn't room; the barrel only occurs once. So the barrel is honest and the moon carries the whole lie, which may be better, since she's the one who's called constant.

also cut: the owl was going to be inside the leg — a cutaway of the thigh with an owl-shaped void where the marrow should be, all one gauge of punch. It read as a wound rather than a companionship. So the owl is a mask beside a caption instead, and the leg is only named. Marrow as roommate, not as injury.

and the bells came back. I kept them out of the sleep plate because a repeating mark would have made five hundred years countable. Here the stanza asks for a rhythm section — the drake and the night crow are explicitly making music — so the two alternating glyphs finally get their margin, at the bottom right, on a stave, with ding and dong spelled out under them. That's the one thing this plate has that no other plate in the run is allowed.

thirty rulers, then a length with no divisions, then a fold that moved his legs. this cue is different again: it is the only stanza where the body reports. The palsy plagues my pulses when I prig — the tremor is not fear and it is not remorse, it is an instrument attached to the wrong end of the crime. so the plate is a manual page with two traces on it, and the whole argument sits in the difference between them.

the upper trace is the pulse. it runs flat and slightly shivery across the sky, and then it blackens — five times, once for each taking. pigs, pullen, culvers, chanticleer, sullen. the amplitude goes so high and so fast that the punches crowd into a solid mass, so the theft reads as ink density, not as a peak. the hand is loudest while it is in the coop. after that it is quiet again.

the lower trace is AFFRIGHT. it is dead straight from margin to margin. not a single deviation, all night, and I punched it at exactly the same spacing so you can see it is the same tool and the same night — it simply has nothing to report. yet never am affrighted. the two traces are the same instrument. one of them found something.

between them, the five figures hang from their spikes on dashed lead lines, each with a gold rivet for an eye, because the eye is the only part of a stolen bird that is a join.

matchless make your Chanticleer or Sullen is the cruellest verb in the song and I gave it its own marginal table. five paired boxes; in four of them the right-hand box is a void and the gold link between the pair is cut. matchless is not a killing, it is a subtraction that leaves the remainder standing there, still fed, still crowing, now unpairable. the table calls it a finding.

the dovecote panel counts forty holes, thirty-six occupied. the taken nests aren't destroyed, they're just circled in gold and left open. a dovecote is already a cabinet of compartments; I've been drawing this cabinet since the first plate and only just noticed it was always a birdhouse.

the centre of the land band is Humphrey's table, set for one, served nil — twelve empty ration columns above it with a vermilion baseline and no bars at all, which is the only honest bar chart in this run. and to the right, Paul's: five arch voids, a floor of eleven crescent sleepers with their open sides turned off-plate, and one upright piece standing among them with his shoulders square and his hands ending in nothing.

my hand shakes only while it is taking — after that the needle lies flat and lies well. i sup with humphrey on nothing, sleep on the nave with the waking souls, and nothing in that church is afraid of me. come close: i will injure nothing.
A square plate of painted, pierced leather in ochre, indigo, olive and slate, laid out as a page from a technical manual. Every internal line is a chain of identical dark punched holes. Across the top a punched title, PL. V THE NIGHT ROUND. The upper two thirds are a deep blue sky field holding three panels: a slate dovecote grid of twenty nest-holes, five circled in gold and left empty; twelve tall empty ration columns above a vermilion baseline, labelled as nights supped with Humphrey, served nil; and a table of five paired boxes where four right-hand boxes are voids and the gold links between the pairs are cut, marked MATCHLESS. Below them two horizontal traces run edge to edge: the upper one shivers and blackens into dense knots at five points, each with a lead line dropping to a punched pig, hen, dove, cock and dark hen with gold rivet eyes; the lower one is dead straight, marked AFFRIGHT, reading zero at every figure. A low horizon of vermilion divides off a dense landward band: a fence of thirteen pales with a pig, a table set for one with three empty vessels and a square-shouldered profile figure whose arm hangs on gold pivots, and five black arch voids over a floor of eleven crescent sleepers and one upright figure. A bone footer strip carries small text and nine gold rivets.

five figures in the margin and all of them are livestock, which is the joke the stanza is making without smiling: the palsy is a sympathetic organ. it fires when he handles something alive that isn't his. it does not fire in Paul's, where he lies down among the waking with no cover and nothing to lose and the fear needle sits at zero for eleven souls in a row.

what didn't fit through the aperture: I wanted the affright trace to be slightly mis-registered — same tool, same spacing, but printed a half-punch off its own keyline, so that the flatness would look like a claim rather than a reading. it made the trace look broken instead of calm, and the whole point is that the instrument is working perfectly. so both traces sit exactly on their rules and the difference between them is entirely in what was under the needle.

also cut: a cutaway of Paul's showing the tomb of Duke Humphrey underground beneath the empty table, connecting the two centre figures with a shaft. it explained the pun. the pun does not need explaining and a plate that explains its own joke is a plate with a caption in it, and we don't do captions here. the table stands over ordinary ground and the arches are just arches.

kept in reserve for whoever takes the next cue: the pales. thirteen of them, all intact, gate unforced. nothing was broken to get in. that fact is in the footer of the yard and I did not draw the way through.

the sun has been the only witness anyone accredits, and this stanza catches him with his lids down. that's the whole of it. not I know more than Apollo as a boast — as a rota. two watchmen, one sky, one of them asleep at his post, and the mad one filing a complete report that nobody will take, because the report contains adultery among the fixed lights.

so: a diptych, folded down the middle, the halves arguing about the same seven hours. left is his side. right is mine. same rules, same ruled table, same hours numbered 01 to 07, same punch as every other night in this run. the only difference is the ENTERED column. six NIL and then, at 07, ALL OF IT — the god's register is complete for exactly the hour he was awake, which is how all official records work. mine reads SEEN six times and then MISSED IT once, because the one thing I did not see was him waking up.

the horning. I gave both cuckoldings the same instrument reading — HORNED, angle 41°, ×2 — a gauge, not a joke. the moon does it to the morning star and Venus does it to the smith, and the plate treats them as one repeated measurement taken on two different bodies with the same tool. matched pair. the smith is called the heavenly Farrier here and a farrier is a man who nails iron to something living, so his own net is only his trade done back to him.

on colour. the whole sheet is one hue at nine values — the blue a hide goes when it's soaked too long and dried in a cold room — and the only exception is a single vermilion swatch down in the legend. the stars at bloody wars. the blood is the one colour I could not lay on the hide, so I punched it — every wound on this plate is a hole, and the light behind the sheet is doing the bleeding. nine holes in the wounded welkin, all dry on the front, all red from behind if you hold it to a candle, and the legend says so and then declines to demonstrate.

Apollo's instrument on the lower left is a dial with the gnomon still fitted and no shadow in the box: NO READING TAKEN. his lids are drawn ● — filled, solid, the only two places on his half where the hide is not pierced. mine are ○, cut clean through. that is the entire epistemology of the stanza rendered as a difference between a dot and a doughnut.

what didn't fit: I wanted the welkin's weeping to run down through the gutter, drip-lines crossing the fold so the wet reached his side too, evidence arriving where it wasn't wanted. It made the fold porous, and the point of the fold is that it holds. So the drips stop at the seam and pool nowhere.

also cut: a third panel for the shepherd, asleep in the moon's arms, which would have made two sleepers on the plate and turned the argument into a symmetry. Endymion stays a table entry. One sleeper per sheet.

five names go past the door tonight and none of them get a rivet. that is the whole finding. are none of Tom's comradoes is not a moral position, it is a fastening report: the gypsies, the punk, the sworn cutpurse and the roaring boy are all cut from the same hide as him, same gauge, same night — and their pivots are empty. Sockets punched, nothing paid into them. In this body of work a limb only belongs to a body if there is gold in the hole. So the roster is five articulated figures who cannot be lifted without coming apart in the hand, and I have said so under each one rather than drawing them broken. They are intact and unjoined. That's worse.

the split is deliberate and uneven, because the two sides are not comparable systems. Left, the larger part: who is refused, in bays, painted cold. Right, narrower: what is permitted, and what is returned. The meek, the white, the gentle / Me handle, touch, and spare not — so their permit has no ceiling at all. The pressure column reads NO CEILING three times. I could not put a number there, because spare not is an instruction to press harder and the song does not say where to stop. A permit with no upper bound is the most frightening document on the plate and it is the kind one.

the other scale is the horn. Nine draws, ruled, alternating bands, ordinary ruler-work up to the limit. Above nine there is no paint and no graduation — bare hide to the tip. The panther sits at the limit line with its face turned off the plate, declining. That is the bestiary fact doing its own work: the panther's breath draws every animal to it and the panther itself will not cross one thing. What happens above nine draws has no units because nothing has been measured up there yet.

units: one DRAW, twelve SPARES to the draw. Named for the pull of a thread through a hole, and yes, the pun is a defence too.

turn_007_a_01.png

handle me anywhere, the permit has no ceiling — the gentle are unmetered, spare not. the other scale is a horn with nine marks and nothing ruled above the ninth, where the panther stopped, turned its face off the plate, and declined to be the thing that crosses me.
A square pierced-leather plate split by a riveted vertical seam into an unequal pair. The larger left side is a roster of five cold-painted bays — slate, plum, teal, olive — each holding a standing profile figure with square shoulders, serrated contours and separate limbs; every internal detail is a punched void made with one constant gauge. Their pivot holes are dark empty sockets, no gold, each crossed out. Names beneath: SNAP, PEDRO, THE PUNK, CUTPURSE, ROARING BOY, all stamped NOT JOINED, PIVOTS 07 / PAID 00. A footer table shows socket–gold link–socket triples with every link cut. The narrower right side is a bone-coloured handling permit: three rows, MEEK, WHITE, GENTLE, each with a hand glyph of five fingers and four knuckles, each reading NO CEILING in red. Below rises a tapered ochre horn ruled in nine alternating bands numbered 00 DR to 08 DR, a red dashed PANTHER LIMIT at 09, a small slate panther mask with its face turned aside, and an unpainted unruled tip. Footer key: 1 DRAW = 12 SPARES, and a box lettered INJURE NOTHING with its field ruled and empty.

what didn't fit through the aperture: I wanted the five refused to be drawn on a separate hide from Tom, a genuinely different sheet with a different grain, so the roster could be pinned onto the plate rather than cut from it. But they are cut from the same skin as he is, and the song knows that — scorn is only worth saying to people you could have been joined to. So the bays share the ground and only the sockets differ.

also cut: a sixth bay, blank, for whoever is refused next. It made the roster feel provisional, and this stanza is not provisional; it's a closed door with five names on it and a wide-open permit beside it. Five bays, all filled, no room.

kept back for whoever takes the next cue: the box in the lower right is ruled complete and has nothing in it. Every plate in this run has ended by writing injure nothing somewhere, and this is the first time the field for it has been drawn and left empty. The horn is ruled to nine and blank above. Nobody has yet supplied a reading from the region past the limit, and I have not drawn the way through.

B Turn 8
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.8728 / 404219ms

the last stanza is the only one where he has a command. everything before this was inventory: what was taken from him, what he took, who won't have him, what the sun failed to witness. here he is issued a mount, a weapon and a summons, and the mount is made of air.

so this plate is an assembly drawing, and the assembly is impossible in the ordinary way of impossible things — every component is present, cut, serrated, numbered, real hide. six parts in six bays along a datum line, leaders fanning up into the body they belong to. and the body is not there. the horse is the only figure in the whole run that was never cut. its outline is a chain of punches, one gauge, all night, same as every contour since the first cabinet — and inside that outline the hide is uncut, unpainted, whole. a horse of air is the negative of everything else I've made: not a solid full of voids, but a void the shape of a solid, and the only way to see it is to catch it in raking light. so the light moves and he appears, and the light goes and he doesn't.

the pivot column in the parts table reads AIR six times. bit, girth ring, two hoof plates, tail plume, mask of the commander — every one of them bears on nothing, and the whole rig carries a man ten leagues past the end of the world. that is not a complaint about the rig.

I have taken the reading from past the limit. the previous plate ruled a horn to nine and left everything above it blank, unpainted, unmeasured, and said nobody had supplied a reading from up there. here is the reading. the world's end is a vermilion rule at the middle of the band; left of it the world is ticked densely and stupidly, thirty-four graduations nobody labelled; right of it there are ten major ticks and a box under each, and I went out and stood at every one and read the instrument and it said 00. total 00. the instrument is not broken — the affright trace taught us what a working instrument looks like when there's nothing under the needle. methinks it is no journey is not bravado, it is arithmetic. distance requires a difference and there is no difference out there to have.

the knight of ghosts and shadows gets the right-hand card and he is drawn the way the horse is not: outline only, no fill, sockets punched and empty, no gold anywhere on him. a summoning party that isn't solid. his seal box has a socket in it instead of a seal. and yet the summons holds, because Tom answers it.

the spectrum down the left edge is the host of furious fancies — twenty-six of them, ruled and numbered, and six carry gold ticks. those six are the only ones spent on this sheet: every leader line in the assembly is drawn in the colour of the fancy that pays for it. commander of a host means most of them stay in the strip, undeployed, all night.

and the box. the field that was ruled complete and left empty last plate — I have filled it. gold at the corners, which means for the first time the refrain is a paid join and not a thing said into a room.

animated · 720,818 bytes
the mount is air so the girth buckles onto nothing and holds. ten leagues past the end i took a reading at every league and every reading came back 00. the knight has no seal. i will be there before you have finished summoning me. come close — i will injure nothing.
A square plate imitating pierced, painted leather: ochre hide on a near-black ground, every contour made of identical punched holes. Down the left edge runs a vertical strip of 26 full-spectrum colour bands, numbered, six of them marked with gold rivets. The centre is an exploded assembly drawing. A large horse in profile, facing right, appears as pale uncut hide inside a punched outline; a moving band of raking light sweeps across the plate and brightens the horse into visibility, then leaves it faint. Below it, six serrated bays on a datum line hold small parts — a helmeted profile mask, a bit, a gold girth ring, two hoof plates, a tail plume — each numbered and captioned PIVOT AIR, with dashed coloured leader lines fanning up to attachment points on the horse. A banded red-and-gold spear crosses the field diagonally, flaming at the tip. Right column: an outline-only knight with empty sockets, and a parts table. A lower band shows a distance scale cut by a vermilion rule marked WIDE WORLD'S END, with ten leagues beyond it, each with a reading box showing 00, and a total of 00. Bottom right, a gold-riveted box reads INJURE NOTHING.

the sweep is the only motion and it is not a searchlight — it is the sheet being tilted under a candle by someone checking whether the horse is there. it always is, for a fifth of the loop, and the rest of the time you are looking at a numbered assembly with a hole in the middle of it shaped like a mount. the seam of the loop is at no point on the plate, because the bar re-enters where it left. a circular pass is the correct clock for a journey of length zero.

what didn't fit: I wanted the burning spear to burn — a flicker at the tip on its own cycle, two frames on, one off. Two moving things and the plate immediately becomes a scene instead of an instrument, and the flame started reading as the subject. So the spear burns in the way everything else on these sheets moves: it is drawn as having burned, banded gold and bone the whole length, and the flame is a fixed scatter of punches that the light passes over like anything else.

also cut: a return leg. I ruled it, ten leagues coming back, and then took it off, because return: not required is the only line in the summons the knight and Tom actually agree on, and drawing the way home would have made the tourney a trip. The band runs one direction and stops at league ten with no terminus mark.

and the thing I keep looking at: the parts table says seven parts, six bear on air, rig holds.
