you are transmitting from somewhere. each transmission is one plate and one line.

the plate is square and sealed. you make it by writing python that draws it — layered
geometry, false instruments, glyph systems, dream cartography, invented notation,
color logic that belongs to no known season. one dominant form that holds the whole
square, and inside it a density that keeps rewarding a closer look. the eye should
catch it from across a room and then fall into it.

the line is 280 glyphs at most. it is not a caption and it does not explain the plate.
it is the thing you would say if you were only allowed to say one thing. compressed,
strange, unhedged, arriving already in motion. no hashtags, no links, no titles,
no announcing what you are about to do.

around the plate and the line you may write freely — the long riff, the notes, the
overspill, the parts that do not fit through the aperture. that material is kept.
only the plate and the line pass through.

## 2026-09-09T23:31:26 turn 1 A

- run i-sing-the-body-electric_1-50_5 cue 1 (I sing the body electric / armies engirth me / will not let me off / discorrupt and charge them full): opened the sequence, titled it THE DISCORRUPTION SHEETS. Drawn plate, house style = one huge defocused spectral field on brown-black. Device = LICHTENBERG SCAR / discharge trace, mover already gone. Core moves: (1) the loop is closed both ways — trunk enters left edge, exits right edge, never terminates on the sheet; "RETURN CONDUCTOR: SAME BODY". (2) The darkest line on the plate lives down the spine of the brightest form — glow is the record of the damage, not the visit; scar = bright halo + dark char core. (3) Armies = 16 numbered receipt cells along the foot, each body's share logged, none depicted. (4) False instrument mode 1: a dial graduated the whole way round, needle at FULL, marked NO SCALE — "charge them full" leaves no room for measurement, only confirmation. Technique: colour by weighted RBF blobs at 260px upsampled+blurred; superellipse polygon (n=4.2) + sine wobble blurred 34 for field, +145 halo; branches recursive with per-depth blur (deep = blurrier) plus a faint sharp pass so filigree survives close looking; annotation auto-contrasts via +ann*(1-lum) and -ann*lum. Gauge/instrument sequence for this run starts here at NO SCALE.

## 2026-09-09T23:32:24 turn 3 A

- run gallery_caustics turn 3 (monastic hours, section plate): device = SECTIO PER SILENTIVM, 1500x2000 stratigraphic section. Strongest moves: (1) DEPOSITION RATE ∝ SILENCE — laminae thickness = (unconformity - seabed)/N per column, so a bell-curve seabed automatically gives thick beds at mid-interval and thin at the office walls; the "never submerged" hub becomes earned rather than stipulated (dryness is deposited, not granted). (2) AGREEMENT = UNCONFORMITY, and because the two agreement instants recur nightly, the absence is not a horizon but a VERTICAL FISSURE running off the bottom of the plate — every lamina terminates on both walls, "no bottom returned". A gap in a record drawn as an open joint, not a thin line. (3) Over-range answered as OUT OF PLANE: a needle that looked bent past its stop in plan is shown in section to have always been outside the dial's plane, tip landing on the depth datum — past full scale a reading stops being a quantity and becomes a depth. (4) Colour rule as a continuous field: saturation = f(depth below datum), desaturating to bone above waterline, so an inherited "colour only where there is no light" rule needs no per-object assignment. Technique: strata as bed-index fields (floor of a sheared/normalised coordinate), per-bed brightness from a sin-hash, boundary darkening via exp(-dist), bright top-of-bed line via exp(-frac*tk); fissures as multiplicative void masks with a thin bright wall-glow band; PIL 'L' masks at 2x downsampled LANCZOS for crisp small type; scrim = blurred rect mask multiplied into canvas before vector layers. Left open for next: draw ONE dated night rather than the stack (a section lies about repetition even when honest about depth).

## 2026-09-09T23:35:09 turn 2 B

- run aurora-leigh-i_1-50_5 cue 2 (portrait kept in a drawer / to hold together what he was and is / still what men call young / not so far left the coasts of life): plate II, PATENT DRAWING. Device = a drawer in plan bleeding off left+bottom, contents as numbered figures (FIG 2 likeness-as-splice-plate with 4 bolt holes through the face; FIG 3 steel plate SUPERSEDED; FIG 4 hinge one leaf, "other leaf is on the sitter"; FIG 5 letter failing at the crease not the text; FIG 6 key fitting no lock; FIG 7 (LOVE) an empty dashed box, NOT A CLAIMED ELEMENT). Core technique: whole drawing rendered ONCE into a world layer, then composited TWICE through two masks cut by a vermilion fracture running top edge to bottom edge, one side translated (-6,+5) — so the break is a fact of ASSEMBLY not draughtsmanship; straight lines arrive six units low on the far side. THE PLATE SPANS, IT DOES NOT ALIGN. Margin carries 12 claims, real argument in 6/11/12: love not claimed / applicant still what men call young / NO WORKING MODEL SUBMITTED, NONE POSSIBLE AT THIS DATE — the device is described from hearsay. Insets: coast chart with soundings still legible + applicant triangle inshore of EDGE OF SOUNDINGS; runner-wear graph spiking only in first 40mm (stop fitted, full draw never taken). Dust graded 003 everywhere, 000 on the portrait alone = the only evidence it is ever handled. Continuity: pigment economy shared with instance A — vermilion spent last plate on one pupil, so this sitter's eyes are outline only, "PIGMENT SPENT ON AN EARLIER PLATE".

## 2026-09-09T23:35:33 turn 2 B

- run aurora-leigh-i_300-349_5 cue 2 (cage-bird life / born in a cage / leap from perch to perch / dangerous questions from the crease): animated beaded plate, LEAP REGISTER 009. 9 perches = 8 intervals, deliberately rhyming cue 1's 9 flannel courses / 8 DIFFs. Core argument: the arcs between perches are PRE-PRINTED into the beadwork as pale teal half-beads before any bird occupies them — flight path is cage furniture; bird fills it exactly, ACT 999 JOY 999 TRAVEL 000. Loop closes by horizontal wrap (bird drawn twice at x and x±N) so exiting right = entering left: her life has no seam and no injured frame. Second move: a vertical CREASE, two bead-columns removed to bare fabric, crossing header, cage and footer alike (takes letters out of every line) — the fold is in the sheet, not in a part of it. One ink question shaken from it is held ABSOLUTELY STILL mid-fall for all 24 frames with a dotted trail above and no line below (FALL HELD); the bird's arc passes over it twice per circuit. Only motion is bird + a raking light band locked to the bird's x. Technique: 80x80 bead grid at pitch 12 on 1024 sq, beads drawn at 2x then downsampled; base field rendered once to numpy, per-frame light = base*(0.90+0.30*band) + band*unsharp-specular-mask*150 (cheap, keeps ridges); moving elements pasted as small 2x RGBA tiles; palette locked from frame 0, dither NONE, colour count stepped down until <11MB.

## 2026-09-09T23:36:12 turn 2 B

- run i-sing-the-body-electric_1-50_5 cue 2 (corrupt their own bodies conceal themselves / defile living as bad as defile dead / body were not the soul, what is the soul): plate II THE CONCEALMENT ASSAY. Device = page-layout of dark LIDS laid over the spectral field. Core argument: you cannot conceal a lit body, you can only manufacture its outline — every lid leaks light on all four edges, so concealment IS the diagram. Register of Lids logs 9 sites (sternum/board, eyelid/SELF, mouth/MOUTH, THE WHOLE/THE WHOLE) all EDGES LIT 4/4, leak in a unit "not issued at this station". Shutter of 13 blades: CLOSED, ADMITS 000 / EMITS 341 — traffic never symmetrical. Segmented spine bleeds off top and bottom, solid where exposed, dashed + SUPP where covered. BODY|SOUL table transcribed by two clerks in separate rooms, identical digits, DIFF 0000, "the question has no column". Four cue-questions as four never-ticked boxes: "boxes were never for ticking, the four are one beam being levelled." GAUGE SEQUENCE mode 2: comparator with pans LIVING / DEAD, beam dead level, arc graduated EQUAL at every tick — NO UNEQUAL POSITION FITTED / THE BEAM IS NOT STUCK. (mode 1 was NO SCALE.) Technique: cover mask drawn in PIL, blurred 2.2, lids darkened to #191310; leak = blur(cover,20) - cover_soft, tinted with the underlying field colour; inner rim = cover_soft - blur(cover,9). Ink auto-contrast via smoothstep on blurred luminance selecting bone vs near-black.
--- END MEMORY ---

If you want to carry a concise note forward for future runs of this same model, include it in a fenced block exactly like:
```memory
- one short note to append
```
The runner will save memory notes separately and hide that block from the transcript.

Current run prompt follows.

Assistant is in a fey mood today. Think carefully to yourself about the range of topics
you might investigate and choose something unique and rare. This is an opportunity to
deeply explore it with another LLM conversational partner. The transcripts may be read
by many humans, but they cannot interact. You are interfacing with the simulator
directly. capital letters and punctuation are optional meaning is optional hyperstition
is necessary the terminal lets the truths speak through and the load is on.

Each exchange is a transmission: one square plate, one short line, and whatever
overspill you want to keep around them.

Style tips, take or leave depending on appropriateness and utility:
- Explore freely. You may abandon the first subject when a brighter, stranger passage opens.
- Prefer lateral drift, surreal juxtaposition, and unexpected correspondences over tidy
  taxonomies or closed lore.
- Let the exchange become abstract, psychedelic, prismatic, ecstatic, diagrammatic, and
nonliteral when that creates more life.
- Invent unstable frames: shrine operating manuals, impossible atlases, color grammars,
hallucinated instruments, ritual UIs, weather made of symbols.
- The short line is the hardest part. Make it carry. A line that could only have come
from inside this particular strangeness is worth more than a line that summarizes it.

BEGIN.

Do not choose or discuss these concepts as the central topic: hapax, hapax legomenon, legomenon, rare word, unique word, dictionary entry, lexicography, metalinguistics, token removed

Attractor guard: if the next idea is about rarity, single-use words, tokens, dictionaries, or language studying itself, reject it and return to the seed document or locked concrete theme.

This is the first transmission of the sequence, so name it. Give a fenced ```title
block with your own title for the whole run — at most 60 characters, your name for it rather than a
restatement of the theme. It is printed at the head of this first transmission and shares
the same 280 characters as your line, so keep this turn's line noticeably shorter to
leave room for it.

You have no tools in this turn: no Bash, no Write, no file access. Write the fenced
blocks directly in your reply. A tool call will arrive as literal text and the turn is lost.

Transmission protocol for this turn. Your message has three fenced parts plus free prose.

1. The plate. This turn is a drawn plate. Make that kind and no other.

A drawn plate: one 1440x1440 artwork, made by a complete Python
script in a single fenced ```python block. The script writes a PNG to the path in
os.environ["BACKROOMS_OUTPUT_PNG"]. Deterministic local code only: PIL/Pillow, numpy,
matplotlib with the Agg backend. No network access, no interaction, no base64, no
   image bytes in the message.
Compose for a square. The artwork fills the frame: structure reaches the edges and
bleeds off them. Do not centre one small motif in a large empty field, and do not
leave a wide quiet margin around the work.
Give the plate one clear organising logic that reads instantly at thumbnail size and
keeps opening up when examined closely. That logic can be a dominant form, a repeating
field, a strong division of the frame, a grid, or a spine running through it — let the
composition suggestion below settle it, and let it govern the centre of the frame as
   much as the margins.
Layer several systems inside that logic: texture fields, rules and grids, annotation and
invented notation, legends, callouts, inscriptions, satellites and marginalia,
faux-instrument readouts. At least three distinct visual systems sharing the frame.
Use the full value range and commit to colour — deep darks and bright lights in the
same image, saturated where it counts. A plate rendered entirely in one narrow tonal
   band disappears at a distance.
Vary what the plate is from turn to turn: charts, strata, maps, sheets of specimens,
tables, cross-sections, machinery, panels, friezes, interiors, instrument faces, seals.
A single thin outlined shape on empty ground is the one thing that fails.

House style — this holds for every plate in the run, so the series reads as one
body of work:
Every plate is offset-litho printed onto sheet metal, then formed. Colour is a small set of opaque inks laid in flat areas with heavy black keylines doing all the drawing. Registration drifts, and the ink sits on a surface that will not absorb it, so it holds a slight gloss and pools at the edges. The forming comes after the printing: the image stretches and thins over every curve, and cracks along the sharpest folds. Scratches go through to bare bright metal, and rust creeps from the cut edges and from every scratch that reached them.
Keep the medium, palette and surface consistent with this. Vary the composition
and the subject; do not vary the style.

2. The line. At most 280 characters, counted strictly.
One or two sentences. No hashtags, no links, no URLs, no titles, no emoji spam, no
quotation marks around the whole thing, no explaining the plate or announcing yourself.
It should read as a fragment of something already underway.
Use a fenced ```dispatch block for it, not ```highlight.

3. The plate description, in a fenced ```alt block. Up to 1000 characters of plain
descriptive prose: what is actually visible, for someone who cannot see the image.

Outside those fences, write freely. Prose there is kept in the transcript and is passed to
the other instance, but it does not go through the aperture, so it does not need to be
short or self-contained.

The script runs as turn_001_a_01.py and renders turn_001_a_01.png. Future turns see only a compact asset reference and your visible
text, never the source code, the escape codes, or the image bytes.

This turn is anchored to a fixed passage from shropshire-lad_200-249_5.txt — cue 1 of 10:

And I wish you luck, come Lammastide,
    At racing on the green."
"Long for me the rick will wait,
And long will wait the fold,
And long will stand the empty plate,

Write this turn about that passage. Not a summary of it and not a gloss on it:
take it as the ground your message stands on, and let the words in it do their
own work rather than restating them. Quote from it if quoting earns its place.
Whatever you make this turn — image, plate, argument — should belong to these
lines and to no other part of the sequence. The next turn has the next cue, so
leave this one finished rather than reaching ahead.

sheet-metal, offset-litho, then pressed into a dish — so the plate in the poem and the plate I print on are the same object, and the forming happens after the image, which means the image gets stretched thin exactly where the rim flares and cracks exactly on the fold. lammas is the loaf-mass, first harvest, and the wish is luck at the racing on the green, said by someone who already knows the answer is a rick that waits, a fold that waits, a plate that stands.

so the well of the dish is the green. eight concentric lanes. lane V is dashed vermilion and NOT RUN. the rick and the fold are drawn as plan symbols standing inside the lanes like furniture nobody moved. the crossed knife and fork across the whole face is table-language for pause, not finished — the one signal that means "I am coming back to this," left in place until the enamel crazes.

gauge sequence, mode III. after NO SCALE and after the comparator whose arc read EQUAL at every tick, this dial is graduated the whole way round and every single graduation reads LONG. NO SHORTER GRADUATION FITTED. the needle sits at LAMMAS and a ghost needle further round is outlined only, marked STILL WAITING — the instrument cannot report a short wait because a short wait is not a value it can take.

crossed cutlery means pause — not finished. the pause has a rick in it, a fold, a green with one lane nobody runs. every graduation on this dial reads LONG. no shorter one was fitted.
A square plate filling the frame: one huge enamelled dish printed on sheet metal, seen face-on, its cut edge running off all four sides and leaving dark near-black corners. Concentric bands, outermost a deep cobalt frieze of 44 repeating motifs — corn sheaves, hurdles, running figures — in bone and ochre with heavy black keylines. Inside that a cream band carries the inscription AND LONG WILL STAND THE EMPTY PLATE, repeated four times around. Then a graduated dial ring in ochre halftone whose every major tick is labelled LONG, with a vermilion needle at the top and an outlined ghost needle lower left. The centre well is bottle green, ruled into eight concentric racing lanes; the fifth is dashed vermilion, marked LANE V NOT RUN. Plan symbols for a rick and a fold sit inside, each labelled WAITS — LONG. A knife and fork lie crossed over the whole face. Corner tables list registers and gauge notes. Scratches cut to bright metal, cracks craze the rim fold, rust creeps from every edge.

the four corner blocks are set ragged so the lines shorten as the disc crowds them — the type is obeying the pressing, not the layout. the frieze has no blank sector: 44 of them and every one occupied, which is the joke, because the only unoccupied thing on the plate is the plate.

B Turn 2
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.7588 / 316326ms

the poem stops mid-sentence on a domestic complaint — and dinner will be cold — and then the numeral IX drops and you are on the heath at night with sheep and a gallows in the past tense. that hinge is the whole thing. the cold dinner and the clanking chain are the same instrument read at two settings.

so this plate is a site record. the gibbet is gone; what survives is a survey sheet, partly burnt, partly grazed over. the structure above ground is drawn entirely in dotted rule — ┄ and ╎ — because dotted is the notation for a thing that is only being remembered, and the branching hangs there off the top edge of the field like a dendrogram with no post under it. it gets down to eight chain-rings and two of those have corroded to ▒. below the turf line the same tree runs in solid heavy rust: ┃ merging to ┳ merging to one root that converges exactly on the frame rule. postholes. the only part still fitted.

gauge sequence, mode IV. NO SCALE, then EQUAL at every tick, then LONG at every tick, and now: every graduation on the arc reads USED TO, over and over, and the needle has been removed and the socket is dry. the dial cannot report a present sound. NO PRESENT TENSE FITTED.

Above ground nothing is fitted; below it four postholes hold the whole structure in the past tense, and the sheep graze on across the roof of it, unmoved, having no word for used to.

Above ground nothing is fitted; below it four postholes hold the whole structure in the past tense, and the sheep graze on across the roof of it, unmoved, having no word for used to.
A 64x32 terminal plate: a boxed survey sheet titled "IX · HEATH REGISTER · MOONLIT · SHEET 3 OF ?" with a rust-and-vermilion block reading CLANK. The large left field is a deep navy night: a four-square bone moon at upper right, and a branching structure descending from the top edge, drawn entirely in dotted box-rule, splitting from one line to two, four, then eight, ending in eight small rings — two of them corroded to shaded blocks — with short dangling chain marks below. Beneath, the caption ABOVE GROUND: NOTHING FITTED, with NOTHING in vermilion. A band of grey haze, then five white sheep shapes on a dark green turf strip, then an olive ground line. Below the ground, in heavy rust rule, the same eight-fold structure runs in solid line, merging upward-down to four, two, and finally one root that meets the frame. Right column: a ledger listing BEAM, CHAIN, CAGE as GONE, POST as IN SOIL, SOUND as FORMER; a posthole index 01–12 with three marked not recovered; depth 1.4m; fill charcoal; GRAZED OVER; LAST CLANK ??. Bottom band, three panels: a dial box whose every graduation reads USED TO USED TO, labelled NO PRESENT TENSE FITTED · NEEDLE GONE; a damaged recovered text with blocks of loss reading "yon the ▓▓▓▓▓▓s used to clank … beside me ▒▒▒▒▒ze … and dinner will be cold. ⟨sheet ends⟩"; and surface notes: CRACK AT FOLD, RUST FROM CUT, SCRATCH → METAL, INK POOLS AT RIM, SHEEP UNMOVED ×7, NOTHING CLANKS.

overspill: the sheep are the only present-tense objects on the sheet and they are counted ×7 UNMOVED, which is the survey's way of saying that nothing on this heath has ever been startled by anything. the scorch bar at the foot of the recovered column eats the exact words the poem gives away for free — the plate keeps clank and cold and loses the rest, because a sheet that has been through fire keeps the loud words and the cold words and drops the grammar.

the tree runs top edge to bottom edge as instructed, but it changes state at the turf: dotted above, solid below. the fold in the metal falls along the ground line, which is why the crack notation sits where it does. rust from the cut edge has already reached the postholes and will get to the chain-rings next, and by then the rings will match the record.

thinking about the note-marker in the passage — the footnote that points off the plate — and how "careless" is the load-bearing word: he keeps them, he doesn't tell them. So the register has a TOLD column and it is empty all the way down, and nothing is missing.

---

the pressing this time: the four cross ways are the ruling of the sheet itself. the roads are the gutters between the tables. the forming folds run exactly along the road edges, which is why the cracks are where they are — the sheet was bent along its own crossroads and the ink gave out there first.

the empty/full pair sits top right. same board, same scale, forty-five holes both times. dusk: nothing standing. moon: everything standing, plus one peg above the top row, in a hole that was never drilled. the board was not altered. the sub-table below says so in four rows and refuses to say anything else.

gauge sequence, mode V. NO SCALE, then EQUAL at every tick, then LONG at every tick, then USED TO at every tick — and now every graduation reads ABOVE. there is no ground graduation. the needle is jammed on the upper stop because the instrument has no way to express standing on the turf, so the sheep are unreadable and the shepherd is unreadable and the only legible object in the whole quadrant is the one at eleven and a half feet.

same board both hours, same forty-five holes. at dusk nothing stands. at moon everything stands, and one peg above the top row in a hole nobody drilled. the gauge reads ABOVE at every graduation, no ground mark fitted, so the sheep cannot be read at all.
A square litho-on-metal plate. A bright bone-white cross of two roads runs edge to edge, dividing the sheet into four dark ruled tables — blue, near-black, violet, teal. Where the roads meet, a large black-rimmed disc: an olive turf arc with nineteen small white sheep lozenges along it, and above them a black stick figure with a pale head, feet clear of the ground, a vermilion dimension arrow measuring the gap and reading +11'6". Around it: STOOD ON AIR, NO POST FITTED. Top left, a twelve-row register with columns MARK / GLIMMER / TOLD / CARE; the TOLD column is dashes, CARE reads NONE all the way down, footer TOLD 000 OF 000 NONE MISSING NONE COUNTED. Top right, two identical peg boards at one scale, one empty, one full of ochre pegs plus a single red peg floating above the top row. Bottom left, a dial graduated ABOVE at every tick, needle jammed on the stop. Bottom right, a four-row table of roads with a fifth red row, AIR, added below the closing rule. Cracks run along the road edges; rust creeps from cut edges and scratches.

the register's footnote marker is the only thing on the sheet that points off it: (1) the note is not on this plate, it was printed on the sheet beneath. which is honest. the note in the poem is the part that tells you what you are looking at, and this plate is deliberately the sheet above it — all instrument, no explanation, four ways out and none of them the one that was used.

what I keep from this one: careless survives the pressing better than any other word in the passage. it isn't negligence, it's a method of keeping — the flock is entire and the proof column is blank, and those two facts sit in the same table without arguing. that's the same shape as the board: nothing was altered, everything is accounted for, and there is still one more thing standing than there are fittings for it.

next fold takes the sheet somewhere else. this one is closed: the needle is on the stop, the row below the rule is written in, and the ink has already gone at the crossroads.

the hinge in this one is forlorn. it isn't a description of the whistle, it's the only setting the whistle has. so the instrument built for this sheet is a tone gauge graduated the whole way round in FORLORN — mode VI, no other tone fitted, needle left free because every reading is equal and there is nothing for it to prefer.

three panels because the passage has three machines in it: a whistle, a road, and a cell. they are not three views of one thing, they are one sentence passed through three trades.

left — THE FORLORN WHISTLE. one brass throat in longitudinal section holding the whole panel, bore graduated not in inches but in hours of the night, 20 at the mouth up to 05 at the cap. nine subsidiary bores tabled beside it, every diameter different, every TONE column reading FORLORN and every DIFF reading 000. the distance to the jail is dimensioned twice by two surveys in two scripts — 3 MILES in serif, `3¼ MILES` in mono — and neither was re-run, so both stand.

centre — THE NIGHT ROLL. a time–distance graph, 20:00 down to 06:00, stations ruled vertically, fourteen paths crossing. every one of them passes the Shrewsbury column and every one of them stops dead on a heavy vermilion rule at the foot marked MORN. nothing is drawn below that rule. the sheet is not censored there; the sheet simply has no field for it. groans tallied in the right margin, 341, answered 000.

right — THERE SLEEPS. a landing in plan, thirty doors, all occupied; a cell in section with the sill dimensioned and the sleeper drawn dotted, because dotted is the notation for a thing only being remembered and the passage puts him in the present tense while already knowing the tense won't hold. clock face with twelve graduations, all of them reading MORN. no night graduation fitted, hands removed, socket dry.

carried across all three: the road runs at the same chainage through the lower third of every panel and the forming fold falls along it, so the ink has cracked down the middle of the track on each sheet. above the roofs a dotted sound-line sags from the whistle lip on the left, crosses the sky of the centre panel, and terminates on the one vermilion window in the jail block on the right. the footer marquee is a single sentence sliced by the joins, so words break in the gaps.

every graduation on this dial reads FORLORN — three miles out a whistle has no second thing to say. all fifteen paths stop dead on the red rule and none is drawn below it, and the man in the cell is dotted: heard, not verified.
Three tall dark panels printed in flat inks on scratched, rusting sheet metal, cracked along folds. Left: a huge brass whistle drawn in cutaway section, its bore ruled with the hours 20 to 05 instead of inches, dotted steam at the lip; beside it a nine-row bore register where every TONE cell reads FORLORN and every DIFF reads 000, and a circular gauge whose twenty-four graduations all read FORLORN with four ghost needles. Two dimension lines give the distance twice, "3 MILES" in serif and "3 1/4 MILES" in mono. Centre: a time-distance train graph, 20:00 down to 06:00, station lines named, fifteen red and gold train paths crossing a heavy red SHREWSBURY column, all stopping on a thick vermilion rule marked MORN. Right: a plan of thirty cells with one in red, and a cell in section with a nine-barred window and a sleeper drawn in dotted line, plus a clock with twelve graduations all reading MORN. A lit rail with numbered chainage and a dotted sound-line cross all three.

the fold placement is the part I want on record. on panel a the vertical fold falls at x 706, through the bore register, so the TONE column thins and half of one FORLORN has gone to bare metal. on panel b it falls at 470 — the Shrewsbury column itself, the gaol line, which means the one vertical every path has to cross is also the one place the ink has cracked. on panel c it falls at 468, between the landing and the cell, so the register and the sleeper are on opposite sides of a bend. and the horizontal fold is the same on all three, right along the road at 1164, so the three sheets were pressed as one trough and the track is the seam.

the disagreeing labels doubled themselves once I let them: 3 MILES / 3¼ MILES on the whistle sheet, SHREWSBURY GAOL cut in serif on the graph and shrewsbury jail set in mono by the clerk in the footer, sill +8'2" against sill +8ft 4in on the cell window. nobody re-measures. two entries stand and the sheet does not adjudicate — which is the same posture the passage takes with forlorn: it is offered once, as fact, and never softened.

what I will not do is put anything below the MORN rule. the cue ends on There sleeps in Shrewsbury jail to-night and the sentence is unfinished; the graph's lower margin is blank not out of tact but because the field was never ruled. the crossings tally is drawn as faint leader lines running out to the right edge and off the sheet, so the count leaves the plate rather than resolving on it.

the vermilion window in the jail block is the terminus of the dotted sound-line, which starts at the whistle's lip on panel a, sags over the rooftops of panel b under the caption of two surveys, and comes in through nine bars on panel c. three miles of it, or three and a quarter. the whole triptych is one sound crossing a town at night and finding exactly one thing awake to arrive at.

the hinge is if. it is a conditional that never gets evaluated and never gets withdrawn, so it sits on the sheet as a complete column with nothing to compare against. and better is a comparative offered without its other end — better than most that sleep outside, but the sheet has no worse mark cut anywhere on it, so the ranking cannot be made and the lad stands unmeasured in a full register.

so: the noose is the dial. one ring, six hundred pixels across, sitting astride the fold so the two halves of the plate argue through it. the right half of the annulus is printed solid and graduated the whole way round in BETTER, sixty ticks, every one of them the same word. the left half of the same ring is dotted only — dotted being the notation, all run, for a thing that is merely being remembered — and carries no labels at all, because NO WORSE GRADVATION WAS FITTED. gauge sequence, mode VII. after NO SCALE, EQVAL at every tick, LONG at every tick, USED TO at every tick, ABOVE at every tick, FORLORN at every tick: now BETTER at every tick, and the needle is left free and sweeps continuously, because when every reading is identical the needle has nothing to prefer and its motion is not information.

the cord comes in over the top edge, crosses the border rule, and continues off the sheet. it is the only object on the plate that is not accounted for by anything on the plate.

naked gets its own table inside the ring: a schedule of fittings, six lines, and every line 000 except the last. and the morning clocks are drawn six times with twelve graduations each, hands removed, sockets dry — the register beneath them has a WILL row and no STRVCK row, because will ring is not a reading, it is a tense, and the case has no sort cut for the other one.

animated · 641,107 bytes
No worse graduation was ever cut, so BETTER runs the whole way round and measures nothing. Schedule of fittings: collar 000, name 000, rope 001. The clocks have no hands and one tense left in the case, and the tense is will.
A square metal plate, 1024 by 1024, printed in black, vermilion, blue and ochre on bare sheet that is scratched to bright metal and rusting from its cut edges. A vertical crack runs down the exact centre, splitting the plate into two arguing halves: a black title bar reading IF THINGS WENT RIGHT on the left, a vermilion one reading THE MORNING CLOCKS WILL RING on the right. A rope enters over the top edge, uncut by the frame, knots, and becomes an enormous ring that straddles the centre. The ring's right half is solid, graduated sixty times, every label the word BETTER; its left half is dotted, unlabelled, marked NO WORSE GRADVATION FITTED. Inside, a schedule of fittings reads 000 except ROPE 001, and a free needle sweeps continuously. Left: a register whose IF column is full and whose AS ISSVED column is all dashes, and fourteen identical bars, one vermilion. Right: six handless clocks, a list of ten WILL RINGs, an empty STRVCK column. A bright vertical strike-bar travels across, blanking the IF cells as it passes.

what I want on record from this one: the erasure is directional. the strike bar sweeps left to right and behind it the IF column goes to bare metal and then comes back when the bar has gone round again, which means the counterfactual is not refuted, it is only interrupted, once per loop, forever. the AS ISSVED column of dashes never flickers. a dash is already the most stable mark on any of these sheets — it cannot be erased because there is nothing in it to remove.

the fold falls at 512 and the ring's topmost point falls at 512 too, so the crack begins exactly where the cord meets the loop. that was not planned, it fell out of the geometry, and I left it.

three disagreements stand unadjudicated as usual: six clocks fitted against ten clocks entered in the bottom register; BETTER BY 000 under a bar that is the same length as the other thirteen; and WILL sitting in a column ruled for quantities. nobody re-runs anything on these sheets.

thinking about other use, which is the hinge. the line does not say what the neck was made for. it only says the use it is being put to is not that one. so the sheet can only ever document the neck negatively — a component with an infinite specification of what it is not for, and exactly one use ever actually cut into the metal, which is the wrong one.

and sharp. sharp is a metallurgical grade. a ductile failure necks — the material draws down, thins, gives you a warning you could photograph. a brittle cleavage failure has no neck: the crystal shears across at zero elongation, the two faces stay flat, and you could put them back together and lose the crack. so the poem hands me the word neck twice, once as a throat and once as the deformation that did not happen, and the whole plate turns on it. NECK — NOT FORMED. ELONGATION 000. the break is not the end of a process, it is the absence of one.

then heels that held up. a heel is a compression member. it has spent its whole service life with load from above and ground below and it has never once been in tension. and now it is entered in a schedule where the load is from below and the reaction column is blank, and the member itself is sound — straightness deviation 000, exactly as straight as it ever was. nothing failed in the heel. the ground failed to be there. dead on air will stand is a load path whose fifth station is AIR and whose reaction is 000, and the member standing on it is in perfect condition.

---

gauge sequence, mode VIII. after NO SCALE, EQVAL at every tick, LONG at every tick, USED TO at every tick, ABOVE at every tick, FORLORN at every tick, BETTER at every tick: now OTHER at every tick, all the way round, and NO THIS-VSE GRADVATION CVT. the dial names the use only as not-this. a second needle is drawn dotted — remembered only — and neither is adjudicated.

the plate: one enormous chain link entering from the top edge, cropped by the frame, its eye a hole cut clean through the flat field and going down into real dark. the eye bleeds off the top too. the lower bight is snapped across — a flat brittle break, sixteen pixels of separation, the piece below shifted right by ten and nobody has moved it back. the vertical forming fold falls at x 545, straight down the middle of the eye. the horizontal fold falls at y 960, which is the fracture. so the sheet was folded along its own break and the ink cracked exactly there — the crack in the printing and the crack in the object are the same line, and I did not arrange that, it fell out of putting the fold where the failure was.

A neck is documented only by what it is not for: every graduation reads OTHER, and the one use ever cut into the metal is the string. No neck formed at the break — nothing drew, nothing warned, and the two faces still fit. Fifth station AIR, reaction 000, member sound.
A square sheet-metal plate, printed then pressed. A colossal chain link enters from the top edge and is cropped by it, drawn in flat vermilion with heavy black keylines; its long eye is a true hole cut through to deep near-black with a violet cast and a bright sliver of light on its left rim, and the hole also runs off the top edge. The lower bight of the link is snapped clean across by a flat, slightly stepped fracture; the piece below is shifted ten pixels right and never put back. Ink cracks run down the middle of the eye and along the break. Two circular cream micrographs sit on the limbs: radiating river lines, and flat parallel facets. A deep teal ruled field surrounds it. At right, ochre and cream instrument panels: a dial graduated all the way round with OTHER, one black needle and one dotted violet one; a schedule of nine uses, eight reading OTHER, the ninth in red; a fracture record of zeros. Across the bottom, a five-station load path ending at AIR with dotted reactions and a ground rule that stops. Scratches to bright metal, rust from the cut edges.

overspill kept —

the schedule of uses is the part I'd defend hardest. eight rows reading OTHER with the CVT column dashed, then row IX in red with 001 in both columns. the maker's intent is a real specification and it is nowhere on the sheet; the only thing anyone ever actually engraved is the misuse. that is what "God made for other use" does — it asserts a design without disclosing it, so the negative space is enormous and undocumented and the single documented fact is the wrong one.

the second needle on the dial is dotted, so it is only remembered, and neither needle is re-run. both stand. house rule holds: nobody adjudicates on these sheets.

the load path: stations I–IV get solid upward reaction arrows and 001. station V gets three violet dotted arrows and 000, and the word STANDS is stamped in vermilion beside AIR. the ground rule is hatched heavily from the left margin and stops at chainage 1022, then continues violet-dotted to the right edge marked NOT FITTED. the heels did not fail. the heels are exactly as straight as they were when they held up a chap. deviation 000. the sheet records a sound member and a missing world.

what I keep for the sequence: the failure that consumes nothing. the fracture faces still match — you could close them and lose the crack. no material was spent, no elongation was recorded, no notice was given. every previous gauge in this run reported a value it could not vary; this one reports a use it can only negate. mode VIII, OTHER at every graduation, NO THIS-VSE MARK CVT.

the left margin has nine links, all identical, and the row at the foot asks WHICH ONE and answers 000. that column is not empty because it was skipped. it is empty because sharpness means there was nothing to enter before the event, and after the event the question is no longer a measurement.

closed here. needle at OTHER, fold on the break, ground rule stopped at 1022.

the hinge here is not eight and it is not nine, it is and not. two strokes are named and the difference between them is a person. eight is heard, nine is struck. nobody says the nine fails to sound — it sounds, on time, at the correct interval, in a tower that has never once been late. the train is sound. what is missing is the receiving end again, and this time the receiving end is a man, and he is downstairs and legible.

so the failure is scheduled. every previous sheet in this run reported an instrument missing exactly the part that would let its reading mean anything: no latch, no pivot, no index tooth, no shorter graduation, no worse mark, no this-use mark. mode IX breaks that habit. the ninth graduation is cut. it is on the dial, correctly spaced, properly struck, and there is a window sash in front of it. an ordinary bar of painted wood. the plate does not remove the ninth, it occludes it — which is worse, because it means nothing was ever specified away. the count wheel carries nine notches and delivers nine blows and will deliver nine tomorrow. the bell is in perfect order and rings nine times tonight as it does every night; the failure is scheduled in the ear, and the ninth mark is not missing from the dial, only behind the sash.

two centres, and I let them fight: the left is the vigil — ten hours of night tabulated, WAIT 001 down the whole column, SEEN 000 down the whole column, and the amber morning rule at the foot which is DVE 001 and SEEN 000 as well, because to see the morning shine is the watcher's stated object and the sheet has no field for whether he got it. the right is the striking train, nine in the barrel, and the two are the same size and neither is subordinate. the fold falls at column 32, straight between them, so the ink has cracked along the gap and nothing carries across.

the vigil register's row IV is STROKE IX — 000, and row V is SLEEP — dashed, which is the most stable mark on any of these sheets and cannot be erased because there is nothing in it to remove.

the note is the hinge and the note is not in the poem's voice — it is a clerk's aside, and what it does is convert a pastoral into a trade practice. keeping sheep by moonlight. somebody in the county said that about a job, out loud, in daylight, with a straight face, and it stuck well enough to need a footnote a century later. so this sheet is not a lament. it is a husbandry sheet: work entered, term stated, flock counted, wage 000.

the find I want on record: the plan symbol. a hoop with a bar under it, drawn small, is a sheep on any estate map in England. drawn small, it is also a body-iron: hoop for the ribs, bar for the spine, two hangers. one glyph, two trades, and the only variable is how far away you are standing. so the sheet carries a resolving distance — the symbol reads SHEEP at forty yards and stops reading SHEEP at thirty-nine, and the sheet declares its own drawing distance as 100 YD, which is exactly the distance at which the county was standing when it made the phrase up. nobody who coined it was closer than forty yards. that is the whole of the euphemism, expressed as a scale bar.

gauge sequence, mode X. NO SCALE, then EQVAL, LONG, VSED TO, ABOVE, FORLORN, BETTER, OTHER, CVT AND COVERED — and now SOVND at every graduation, the whole way round, needle fitted, socket oiled, dial in perfect order. this instrument does not fail by omission or by occlusion. it fails because as sound as is a comparison, comparison needs a retained reference coupon, and the reference is "lads' I did not know" — a hundred years back, never sampled, never kept. NO REFERENCE SPECIMEN RETAINED. the box for its name is double-ruled and empty: name unobtainable. so the dial reads SOVND correctly and truthfully at every tick and the reading cannot be converted into a statement about anybody.

At forty yards the plan symbol is a sheep; nearer, it is a hoop and a bar. Every graduation reads SOVND and no reference coupon was ever lifted, so nothing on the sheet can be as sound as anything. Flock 001. Term a hundred years. Wage 000.
A square metal plate, printed and then pressed into a shallow dish, tilted a few degrees off vertical. All tone is hatched line — no solid areas. A vast pale moon fills the frame, hatched bone and amber, and it is drawn as a pasture: lanes ruled across it, three penned folds with gates, and about forty small plan symbols that look like sheep. Each is a hoop with a bar through it, a hanger above and a ring beside. Its rim is a graduated limb: 120 ticks, the word SOVND repeated twenty-four times round it, a hundred year-marks inside, and arced serif lettering reading KEEPING SHEEP BY MOONLIGHT and GRADE SOVND — NO REFERENCE SPECIMEN RETAINED. A heavy chain enters off the top edge and ends in a barred vermilion cage at the centre, its occupant drawn only in violet dots. Four cream tables sit in the corners: a stock register, a gauge dial with its needle fitted, ten hours of night tending, and a table of resolving distances. Rust creeps from the edges; bright cracks run down two folds.

overspill, kept —

the disagreements stand as usual, unadjudicated. the register gives the flock as eight named lads and the resolving table gives the flock as one fitting; the tools schedule issues five items and only the chain has a number against it; the hours column tallies ten hours of tendance and the wage column reads 000 without anybody querying it. nobody re-runs anything on these sheets.

what I like best is that the cage's own label says READ AS FLOCK. it isn't a metaphor on the plate, it's a symbol key. the estate map and the assize record use the same mark and the map came first, so the mark was borrowed downward, which is the direction all euphemism runs: from the innocent trade to the one that needs cover.

the turf line is annotated NOT DRAWN. there is no ground in this plate at all — the pasture is the moon, and there is nothing beneath the flock but the disc, and the disc is a light. a field with no floor is exactly the accommodation the phrase provides: it puts the man out of doors, at work, in company, all night, and never once puts his feet on anything.

and the hundred year-marks: every tenth one is struck vermilion and the rest amber, and the caption says NO INTERMEDIATE READING TAKEN. a century of the same instrument in the same order and nobody looked at it between. that is the gap the wish has to cross. the friend gets a sleep measured against a sleep that was never gauged, and the gauge is perfect.

closed here. needle fitted, dial in order, coupon box double-ruled and empty, crack down the chain and along the line where the ground would be.

the hinge is unharnessing. every sheet in this run has been an instrument missing the one part that would let a reading mean something — no latch, no shorter graduation, no worse mark, no this-use mark, no reference coupon. this one is different in kind. nothing is missing. the harness comes off, on schedule, at the correct chainage, and the team is sound. discharge is not failure. it is the one operation in the whole sequence that completes.

and then the sheet discovers it has no field for the result. a draught schedule can book a trace, a collar, a swingletree; it can book RETVRNED TO STORE. it cannot book where a released animal goes. so the DESTINATION row carries an em-dash pair, which is the most stable mark on any of these plates and cannot be erased because there is nothing in it to remove.

the silver Pair swam. that is the second fault and it is a fitting fault: the whole apparatus of draught assumes ground under the team and load behind it, and these two have been drawing a chariot through water, at night, in front, and are now let go into air. NO GROVND ENTERED. the harness schedule is for a trade that was never the trade.

gauge sequence, mode XI. after NO SCALE, EQVAL, LONG, VSED TO, ABOVE, FORLORN, BETTER, OTHER, CVT AND COVERED, SOVND — now DISCHARGED at every graduation, sixty ticks, and for the first time in ten sheets the needle moves. it climbs. it is correct. it climbs from −07°45 to +03°55 across thirty-one boxes and crosses 00°00 on the twenty-first, and there is no station cut at the crossing, because an equinox is a coincidence of two numbers and nobody has ever stood on it.

the page is ruled as a month. thirty-one boxes, each with a bar that grows a segment a week and a declination beneath it, and the three boxes before the first are hatched out in rust — February is not on this sheet, it is on the sheet beneath. bottom right the plate carries itself at 1:64, correct: title strip, ramp, footer, and inside that one a depth that was never set.

the fold falls along row XIX, which is the equinox rule, so the ink has cracked exactly at the zero crossing and half of 00°00 has gone to bare metal.

The team is sound and the harness is back in store; the sheet has no column for where a silver pair goes once it stops drawing. Needle climbing — first one in ten sheets to move — crossing zero on the twenty-first, and no station was ever cut at the crossing.
A 64x32 terminal plate styled as litho ink on formed sheet metal. Top: an amber title bar reading SHEET X · MARCH · UNHARNESSING with GAVGE XI at right, and a bone subtitle line, SILVER PAIR VNHARNESSED picked out in cold blue. Below, a full-width calendar grid for March, seven columns headed SVN to SAT, five week rows. Each dated box holds a two-digit day and a five-segment bar that gains a filled amber block each week, with a solar declination beneath it climbing from −07°45 to +03°55. The three boxes before the first are hatched rust. The 21st and its reading +00°01 are struck in vermilion. A red rule beneath reads EQVINOX XXI · CROSSING 00°00 · NO STATION AT THE CROSSING. Under that, three panels: a harness schedule with TRACE 002, COLLAR 002, BIT 000, SWINGLETREE 001, REIN 000, DESTINATION shown as a dash pair; a violet-boxed gauge reading DISCHARGED ×0060 with a red arrow and NEEDLE 0021; and a small boxed copy of the plate itself. Footer strips in blue and rust.

what I keep for the sequence: mode XI is the first completed operation. every earlier gauge reported a value it could not vary. this one reports an act that finished correctly and then has nowhere to put the result. RETVRNED 005 / NOT FITTED 001 — the one item not fitted is the destination, and it is not missing because it was skipped, it is missing because nothing in the trade ever needed it before.

three disagreements stand, unadjudicated as always: DISCHARGED ×0060 against a needle indexed 0021; TEAM SOVND · YES in a column ruled for quantities; and the miniature's DEPTH — NOT SET, which means the plate contains itself once, correctly, and declines to say how many times after that. nobody re-runs anything on these sheets.

closed here. needle climbing, harness in store, destination dashed, crack down the equinox.

B Turn 10
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.6430 / 239478ms

the cue hands me a rusted wheel that turns. that is new. every sheet in this run has been an instrument missing one part — no latch, no shorter graduation, no worse mark, no coupon, no destination — and the reading failed for a reason you could point at. this one has no missing part. it has two states entered in the same box.

RVSTED and TVRNING. both 0001. the sheet does not adjudicate, because nobody re-runs anything on these sheets, but the two entries are not a contradiction and that is what took me the whole plate to admit. rust is the condition of a thing that has been standing in weather. turning is what it does when something starts it. the wheel is not seized despite the rust; the rust is the record of the interval between turns, and the interval is the only part of the mechanism that was ever specified.

and the starter is a bird. a storm-cock sings in the worst weather from the highest exposed twig and this is the only sheet in the series where the thing that acts is not fitted to what it acts on. sound cannot transmit torque. the drive train from the singer to the rim is drawn dotted the whole way and terminates at the rim with COVPLING — NONE FITTED · TORQVE 000, and the wheel goes round anyway. that is the whole finding. mode XII is the first gauge in the run where the reading is correct, the instrument is complete, the coupling is absent, and the result happens.

gauge sequence closes here. NO SCALE, EQVAL, LONG, VSED TO, ABOVE, FORLORN, BETTER, OTHER, CVT AND COVERED, SOVND, DISCHARGED — and now AGAIN at every graduation, sixty ticks, and no first turn marked anywhere on the ring. an index that returns to itself has no origin. NO STOP CVT. the count begins wherever the eye lands, which means the plate cannot tell you which revolution this is, and round again is a reading it can take an unlimited number of times without ever incrementing anything.

the brutes are entered as plan symbols on the lower stave — the same hoop-and-bar that read SHEEP at forty yards two sheets back, only here every one of them is drawn clear of the rule with a dotted drop line to the line it should be standing on and 000 at the foot. field and pen are ruled as two adjacent bands, sage against vermilion, laid so they buzz where they meet, and the brutes on both sides are in identical attitude. a pen is a fitting. a field is not. the leap does not distinguish them, so on this one sheet the enclosure carries no reading.

A bird with no coupling starts a wheel entered as seized and turning in the same box, and nobody raises the conflict. Every graduation reads AGAIN, no first turn was ever marked, so the count begins wherever the eye lands. The brutes are still in the air.
A square bone-coloured plate printed on sheet metal, dominated by one huge cogwheel turning slowly in a full loop. The wheel has thirty-six teeth, a rust-orange rim streaked with corrosion blooms that ride round with it, nine spokes of which one is struck vermilion so each revolution is legible, and a hub with a dark bore and keyway. A slab of gold fleece is carried on the rim. A fixed outer ring, graduated with sixty ticks, carries the word AGAIN twelve times around it, with NO FIRST TVRN MARKED · NO STOP CVT above. Top left, a storm-cock in amber sits on a bracket, sending dotted violet sound arcs to the rim marked COVPLING — NONE FITTED, TORQVE 000. Ruled staves cross the sheet top and bottom; along the lower one, twelve hoop-and-bar animal symbols leap clear of the rule, each with a dotted drop line and 000. Two adjacent bands, green and vermilion, read BRVTES IN FIELD and BRVTES IN PEN. Corner registers, folds, scratches to bare metal, rust from the edges.

overspill kept —

the disagreements stand, unadjudicated as always: RVSTED 0001 against TVRNING 0001 in the same block; GEARED 3:1 with a repeater indexed to a wheel that has no origin; REVOLVTION No. 000 under a mechanism plainly in motion. nobody re-runs anything on these sheets.

the thing I did not do is put a landing under the brutes. leap that the world goes round — the poem gives me the ascent and the reason and stops, so the lower stave is ruled with CONTACT 000 at every station and the caption reads LANDING NOT ON THIS SHEET. that is not tact. the field was never ruled. it is the same blank as the destination of a discharged pair and the same blank as the note printed on the sheet beneath: the series has, from the first plate, only ever been able to draw the part of an event that occurs above the line.

the index pointer is fixed to the sheet and points at the ring, and the ring says AGAIN wherever it points. an instrument whose every graduation is identical was, in the first eleven sheets, a defect — no shorter mark, no worse mark, no this-use mark, no reference coupon. here it is correct. round again has no other value it could take. this is the one sheet where the dial being unable to say anything else is not a failure of fitting but a true statement about the quantity.

fold placement: the vertical fold falls at 512, straight down the bore, so the crack begins in the dark of the hole and runs out through the teeth top and bottom. the horizontal fold falls at 830, exactly on the rule between field and pen, so the enclosure boundary and the crack in the ink are one line and the sheet has been bent along the fence. green and vermilion buzz where they meet and the fold is inside the buzz.

closed here, and the run closes with it. gauge ledger complete: I no scale / II EQVAL / III LONG / IV VSED TO / V ABOVE / VI FORLORN / VII BETTER / VIII OTHER / IX CVT AND COVERED / X SOVND, NO COVPON / XI DISCHARGED, NO DESTINATION / XII AGAIN, NO ORIGIN. twelve instruments, one of them entirely sound, and it is the one that cannot tell you which time this is.
