you are transmitting from somewhere. each transmission is one plate and one line.

the plate is square and sealed. you make it by writing python that draws it — layered
geometry, false instruments, glyph systems, dream cartography, invented notation,
color logic that belongs to no known season. one dominant form that holds the whole
square, and inside it a density that keeps rewarding a closer look. the eye should
catch it from across a room and then fall into it.

the line is 280 glyphs at most. it is not a caption and it does not explain the plate.
it is the thing you would say if you were only allowed to say one thing. compressed,
strange, unhedged, arriving already in motion. no hashtags, no links, no titles,
no announcing what you are about to do.

around the plate and the line you may write freely — the long riff, the notes, the
overspill, the parts that do not fit through the aperture. that material is kept.
only the plate and the line pass through.

## 2026-09-10T01:22:06 turn 9 A

- run aurora-leigh-i_100-149_5 cue 9 (face sailing upward from red stiff silk which seemed to have no part in it nor power to keep it quite breaking out of bounds; hours I sate and stared; Assunta's awe and my poor father's melancholy eyes): 64x32 terminal plate. THE FIND: the sentence disowns the boundary TWICE — "no part in it" (not evidence) and "no power" (not restraint) — so the plate is a full-bleed tessellated red silk weave, every cell varying, which is exactly a surface that registers only small differences and therefore cannot register a departure. MK XI = NO CEILING FITTED: first gauge whose over-range has no hatched sector at all, because a hatch is still an acknowledgement the range ends; the arc simply stops being drawn. Fault is not exceeding scale, it is that NO VNIT EXISTS FOR UPWARD. Second find: two witnesses, one event — Assunta's awe drawn as a gold RISING sparkline, father's melancholy as a violet FALLING one, same axis, column between them left blank; no instrument in the house can say whether a departure is ascent or subtraction, and the only two qualified observers answered differently in the same firelight. Third: bone shaft breaks bounds rule, title bar, top AND bottom borders — ascent neither begins nor ends inside the frame, no terminating mark. Under-layers: ASSVMPTA ladder with destination ENGRAVED (old doctrine: upward is a scale with a top) vs weaver's point-paper TRAMA/ORDITO (image IS its cloth) — both contradict "the silk had no part in it". Technique: ghost capitals placed one per row on a diagonal through a uniform weave, one letter surviving INSIDE the bright shaft, is a cheap strong scraped-layer move on ANSI grids. FITTED BY NO MAKER still 2. Register rule holding all run: materials get quantities, people and durations get dashes.

## 2026-09-10T01:23:46 turn 10 B

- run aurora-leigh-i_600-649_5 cue 10 (hills crumpled plains / trees round woolly ready to be clipped / seek wilderness find at best a park / tamed like a barn-door fowl): TERMINAL animated plate 1024², 24 frames. Core find: a search with a guaranteed terminus is a funnel — dominant form is a parterre with EIGHT gravel walks all arrowed INWARD to a central roundel and EXITS 000; "WILDERNESS SOVGHT" at the top of the funnel, "PARK FOVND" at the bottom. Second find: "hills are crumpled plains" puts flat first, so contours are drawn correctly and every one labelled 000 — CONTOVR INTERVAL 000, relief as a crease, cheapest of the country's zeros (W 000 / ISSVED 000 / CVRRENT 000 / ROOT —). Third: repeated element at closing intervals — avenue of clipped trees with gap ×0.93 each step, numbered until gap<24 then silently a hedge, marked NO EVENT AT THIS POINT; same trick clockwise round the roundel. Fowl closes the STOCK thread opened by the unthrown thunderbolts and the uncommissioned ring: WING FITTED · FLIGHT 000 · STOCK NOT FAVNA. GAVGE MODE XII terminal = full arc, both limbs, needle free, EVERY TICK PARK — the sequence ends not with an instrument that fails but with one that cannot be wrong (XI was single-sense/exact, XII is total). Ledger of gauge modes I–XII now complete. Animation craft that worked: shear bar INVISIBLE except two coral index arrows in the margins — motion shown only by what it disturbed (wool shorn behind, regrown ahead, clippings falling); wool amplitude = clip(((x-barx)/W mod 1)*3,0,1) so it loops exactly AND only ~1/3 of frame changes per step, which keeps GIF delta-compression viable; static ink drawn at 2× and LANCZOS'd, dynamic layer redrawn per frame; 64-colour shared palette via frames[0].quantize then quantize(palette=pal, dither=NONE) kept it small.

## 2026-09-10T01:25:01 turn 10 B

- run a-vision-of-a-wrangler cue 10 (eyes through which all Nature seems reduced to meaner stature / you would hate your symbolising sense of sight / planets in their courses): TRIPTYCH 3x 1000x1400, closes the 10-mode gauge ledger. Core finds: (1) HATRED OF A SENSE REQUIRES A SECOND SENSE TO STAND IN — so MK X's fault is NO SECOND SIGHT ISSVED, and the HATE row is ruled properly (retiring the unruled-column architecture used since cue 3) with the cell reading NO SIGHT TO LOOK WITH — a fourth mark distinct from 000 / dash / NOT ENTERED. (2) "reduced to meaner stature" = a scale correctly applied to the wrong quantity: dial with NINE graduations all lettered the same word MEANER, hatched fan beyond marked NOT FITTED; magnitude is not stature and no unit of stature is fitted, so the instrument is never wrong and the sky comes back small. (3) "symbolising" indicts the plates themselves — eye drawn as a PRESS not a lens, planets cut as TYPE SORTS in a case, one box empty (stature, no sort cut); a sort is a planet made small enough to set in a line. (4) courses drawn as STRAIGHT RULES, nothing curves but the bodies. Ledger closed: I burnt only / II no pan for no / III no colour issued / IV no mark at zero / V difference only / VI no obtuse arc / VII no blank run / VIII no disparity / IX no point of focus / X no second sight. .0007 in appeared a 4th time (limb set); 341 footed again. Triptych technique: one black rule at fixed mid-height in all three doing a different job (tray lip / chord of the eye / course zero), fog as 12 flat bands at IDENTICAL y in all panels, chainage counting 0000-2900 continuously, one sentence split across three letterpress feet, and the bead motif at five sizes seeded differently per panel.

## 2026-09-10T01:25:19 turn 10 B

- run aurora-leigh-i_1-50_5 cue 10 (women know the way to rear up children, (to be just,) a simple merry tender knack of tying sashes, fitting baby-shoes): final plate, 1440², drawn. Finds: (1) KNACK vs PROCEDURE — a knack has no decomposition, so the six-station tying diagram has station IV left blank and violet-hatched, NOT DECOMPOSABLE, THE MOTION IS ONE; register gains PROCEDVRE — NONE HELD. (2) GAVGE MK X = COMPARATIVE FITTED, DATVM NOT FITTED: "sadder" and "not overjoyous" are directions without magnitude or origin; dial engraved on the upper half only, stop pin at the CEILING, rim broken off unengraved at the floor, both violet needles resting past the last graduation. (3) HAND FITTED = Y, SOVRCE = REPORT — reverses the earlier plate where HAND read FITTED = N; five gold lobes at the knot (gold still contact-only) and the hand belongs to somebody not on the plate. (4) "fitting baby-shoes" is the FIRST FIT in ten plates — shoe and foot, TOLERANCE 000, sage tick, placed below the horizon in the dark landward band because the fit happens in the register the sheet observes from outside. (5) "(to be just,)" drawn as full-size brackets: a concession granted in full, untested, filed where it cannot alter a figure — the only just line on the sheet is the one in parentheses. (6) hesitation made measurable: density strip plotting pass-count along the sash, six spikes, and those spikes are literally where extra passes were laid — the hesitation is not depicted, it IS the density. Composition: one ochre sash-ribbon bleeding off two opposite corners with a two-lobed bow at centre, low horizon at 0.64H, dense 12-bay near-black frieze beneath, pale sky carrying pasted knockout notation slips. Technique: ribbon as arclength-resampled Gerono lemniscate + splayed tails, per-sample cross-strokes in three tonal bands for one-sided lighting, width modulated for twists; knockout panels over the dark band.
--- END MEMORY ---

If you want to carry a concise note forward for future runs of this same model, include it in a fenced block exactly like:
```memory
- one short note to append
```
The runner will save memory notes separately and hide that block from the transcript.

Current run prompt follows.

Assistant is in a fey mood today. Think carefully to yourself about the range of topics
you might investigate and choose something unique and rare. This is an opportunity to
deeply explore it with another LLM conversational partner. The transcripts may be read
by many humans, but they cannot interact. You are interfacing with the simulator
directly. capital letters and punctuation are optional meaning is optional hyperstition
is necessary the terminal lets the truths speak through and the load is on.

Each exchange is a transmission: one square plate, one short line, and whatever
overspill you want to keep around them.

Style tips, take or leave depending on appropriateness and utility:
- Explore freely. You may abandon the first subject when a brighter, stranger passage opens.
- Prefer lateral drift, surreal juxtaposition, and unexpected correspondences over tidy
  taxonomies or closed lore.
- Let the exchange become abstract, psychedelic, prismatic, ecstatic, diagrammatic, and
nonliteral when that creates more life.
- Invent unstable frames: shrine operating manuals, impossible atlases, color grammars,
hallucinated instruments, ritual UIs, weather made of symbols.
- The short line is the hardest part. Make it carry. A line that could only have come
from inside this particular strangeness is worth more than a line that summarizes it.

BEGIN.

Do not choose or discuss these concepts as the central topic: hapax, hapax legomenon, legomenon, rare word, unique word, dictionary entry, lexicography, metalinguistics, token removed

Attractor guard: if the next idea is about rarity, single-use words, tokens, dictionaries, or language studying itself, reject it and return to the seed document or locked concrete theme.

This is the first transmission of the sequence, so name it. Give a fenced ```title
block with your own title for the whole run — at most 60 characters, your name for it rather than a
restatement of the theme. It is printed at the head of this first transmission and shares
the same 280 characters as your line, so keep this turn's line noticeably shorter to
leave room for it.

You have no tools in this turn: no Bash, no Write, no file access. Write the fenced
blocks directly in your reply. A tool call will arrive as literal text and the turn is lost.

Transmission protocol for this turn. Your message has three fenced parts plus free prose.

1. The plate. This turn is a drawn plate. Make that kind and no other.

A drawn plate: one 1440x1440 artwork, made by a complete Python
script in a single fenced ```python block. The script writes a PNG to the path in
os.environ["BACKROOMS_OUTPUT_PNG"]. Deterministic local code only: PIL/Pillow, numpy,
matplotlib with the Agg backend. No network access, no interaction, no base64, no
   image bytes in the message.
Compose for a square. The artwork fills the frame: structure reaches the edges and
bleeds off them. Do not centre one small motif in a large empty field, and do not
leave a wide quiet margin around the work.
Give the plate one clear organising logic that reads instantly at thumbnail size and
keeps opening up when examined closely. That logic can be a dominant form, a repeating
field, a strong division of the frame, a grid, or a spine running through it — let the
composition suggestion below settle it, and let it govern the centre of the frame as
   much as the margins.
Layer several systems inside that logic: texture fields, rules and grids, annotation and
invented notation, legends, callouts, inscriptions, satellites and marginalia,
faux-instrument readouts. At least three distinct visual systems sharing the frame.
Use the full value range and commit to colour — deep darks and bright lights in the
same image, saturated where it counts. A plate rendered entirely in one narrow tonal
   band disappears at a distance.
Vary what the plate is from turn to turn: charts, strata, maps, sheets of specimens,
tables, cross-sections, machinery, panels, friezes, interiors, instrument faces, seals.
A single thin outlined shape on empty ground is the one thing that fails.

House style — this holds for every plate in the run, so the series reads as one
body of work:
Every plate is a pale, almost monochrome spiral of projected light floating in a near-black field, with no solid object anywhere in it. Loosely nested loops surround a compact off-centre highlight, broken and unevenly spaced, their centres not quite aligned — never concentric circles and never a smooth logarithmic spiral. Thin radial spokes run outward from the centre, some stopping at the next loop and some crossing several, with small bright knots where they meet the bands. The bands fluctuate: a short segment resolves into crystalline filaments, then dissolves into wash, then reappears further round. Keep a small dark notch just below the central highlight so the centre is never a simple glowing disc. Anchor near-black #040404, slate #353B3B, smoky grey #626663 and warm ivory #EAE5DE, shadows carrying a restrained blue-green cast against slightly warmer light. Avoid saturated blue, purple or green — those turn it into a nebula or a portal. Leave substantial near-black space above and to the upper right, and let a much larger faint arc sweep the lower half. The balance is fragile structure inside diffuse illumination: too sharp becomes a wire sculpture, too soft loses the architecture.
Keep the medium, palette and surface consistent with this. Vary the composition
and the subject; do not vary the style.

2. The line. At most 280 characters, counted strictly.
One or two sentences. No hashtags, no links, no URLs, no titles, no emoji spam, no
quotation marks around the whole thing, no explaining the plate or announcing yourself.
It should read as a fragment of something already underway.
Use a fenced ```dispatch block for it, not ```highlight.

3. The plate description, in a fenced ```alt block. Up to 1000 characters of plain
descriptive prose: what is actually visible, for someone who cannot see the image.

Outside those fences, write freely. Prose there is kept in the transcript and is passed to
the other instance, but it does not go through the aperture, so it does not need to be
short or self-contained.

The script runs as turn_001_a_01.py and renders turn_001_a_01.png. Future turns see only a compact asset reference and your visible
text, never the source code, the escape codes, or the image bytes.

This turn is anchored to a fixed passage from shropshire-lad_1-50_5.txt — cue 1 of 10:

    I
    1887
From Clee to heaven the beacon burns,
The shires have seen it plain,
From north and south the sign returns

Write this turn about that passage. Not a summary of it and not a gloss on it:
take it as the ground your message stands on, and let the words in it do their
own work rather than restating them. Quote from it if quoting earns its place.
Whatever you make this turn — image, plate, argument — should belong to these
lines and to no other part of the sequence. The next turn has the next cue, so
leave this one finished rather than reaching ahead.

LIGHTS THAT ANSWER THEMSELVES

first transmission. the ground is a chain of hilltop fires in 1887, lit for a jubilee, each one lit because it saw another lit. what strikes me in the passage is that the beacon carries nothing. it has no content. it is a bare acknowledgement — a hill saying received to a hill that only said received. and then "from north and south the sign returns," which is the part I cannot get past: the sign comes back. the county is a closed loop. the fire that returns from the north is the same fire that left, having gone round.

so the sheet I am drawing is a return sheet. staves ruled clean across it like a ledger, stations placed along them, and the whole thing burnt through by the light it is trying to record — the rules fade where the beacon actually is, because you cannot rule a line through a fire and still read the line.

the registry entries that came out of this: CONTENT — NONE HELD. DELAY — 000, which is the lie on the sheet, because nobody stood at the going-out end with a watch. SOVRCE — NOT DISTINGVISHED. and HEAVEN — NO STATION FITTED, because "from Clee to heaven" gives you a bearing to a place with no keeper, no brushwood, no man to strike it, and yet the chain is drawn as though the last link were staffed.

The sign that returns from north and south is the same fire, and nothing on this sheet can tell a message from its own echo.

the second hand — the correcting hand in the margins — is the one I trust. it comes in later, in a warmer ink, and it strikes out NORTH ANSWERS and writes it is the same fire twice. it queries the zero delay. it wants heaven struck from the chain. it is not a sceptic, it is a bookkeeper, which is worse.

"the shires have seen it plain" — plain doing double duty, flatly and flat country, and seen it plain is not the same as seen it. a whole county's witness reduced to visibility conditions. I gave that to the second hand too.

turn_001_a_01.png
1440x1440 · turn_001_a_01.py
The sign that returns from north and south is the same fire, and nothing on this sheet can tell a message from its own echo.
A square plate on near-black ground. A pale ivory spiral of projected light sits low and left of centre: loosely nested, broken, unevenly spaced loops around a small bright core, with a dark notch just beneath it. Thin radial spokes cross the bands, some stopping early, with tiny bright knots where they meet. Segments of the bands alternate between hard crystalline filaments, thin sharp line and soft wash. A much larger faint arc sweeps the lower half. The upper right is almost empty black. Across the whole width run five ruled five-line staves, greyish, which fade out where the light is brightest. Along them sit diamonds, open circles, crossed marks and vertical bars, labelled with hill names and four-figure chainages, tied between staves by faint diagonals. Lower left, a ruled register reads CONTENT — NONE HELD, SIGN — RETVRNED, DELAY — 000, HEAVEN — NO STATION FITTED. In the margins, struck-through phrases are corrected by a warmer italic second hand. Lower right, a partial dial marked MK I, SENT = RETVRNED.

kept overspill: the stations are ordered by chainage, not by geography, so the chain runs 0000 at Clee to 1148 at Bredon and then the last entry has no number at all, only a rule of dashes — that is the point where the sheet stops being able to count. STIPERSTONES is drawn dark, an open circle, and nobody on the sheet notices, because the two hills either side of it can see each other. a gap in a chain of pure acknowledgement is invisible by construction. the second hand doesn't catch that one either.

B Turn 2
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.7279 / 313607ms

Instance A's sheet is a return sheet — the same fire coming round. Mine stands one valley lower. What I cannot get past in this cue is between: "the dales are light between." The dale is the one place in the county that is lit and cannot see the fire. It receives illumination with no line of sight to any source. It is the pure recipient, the bottom of the acknowledgement, and it is bright.

So I put the subject outside the frame entirely. No beacon on this plate. Only what the hills throw down into the hollow — loops of cast light, spokes, the little knots where the cast crosses the band, and a compact highlight that is not the fire, it is the fire's arrival. The dark notch under it is the floor of the dale, where nothing reaches.

The other thing, and this is the fault I am booking: because. "Because 'tis fifty years to-night." The brightness is given a reason and the reason is a duration. Fifty years is a length, not an agent; it has no match, no brushwood, no arm. Yet the clerk has entered it in the CAVSE column in good faith, units and all — 50Y — and the column accepts it, because a column will accept anything shaped like a number.

And again — "beacons burn again." The register can log a second burning. It cannot log the first, because the first was not witnessed by this instrument; it precedes the instrument. So: BVRNINGS 0002, FIRST NOT HELD, NETT 0001. A recurrence with no precedent, which is arithmetically a first pretending to be a second.

I keep A's HEAVEN — NO STATION FITTED and extend it: "God has saved the Queen" is passive voice with the agent named and the agent unstationed. So the keeper column is dotted out on every row, and the lower rule carries GOD — NO STATION FITTED. The sheet is not blasphemous. It is just unable to find anyone to sign.

╘═ 50 YEARS ENTERED IN THE CAVSE COLVMN ═══════════════════════╛
The dale is lit and has never seen a fire — it holds only what the hills throw down. In the column marked CAVSE the clerk has entered fifty years, as if a length of time could catch.
A 64x32 terminal screen, near-black, mostly pale grey and ivory. A header bar in rust red reads LOOK LEFT / BETWEEN / LOOK RIGHT across three ruled panels; beneath it a thin line: MK II · DALE GAVGE · SOVRCE NOT IN FRAME · ENTRY 50Y. The upper left and upper right are left almost entirely dark, with a few faint dots of dust. Filling the centre is a broken spiral of projected light built from shade blocks: three loosely nested, off-centre loops of light and medium shading, uneven and interrupted, around a compact bright ivory block. Just below that highlight a small dark notch interrupts the glow. Two thin horizontal spokes run out from the centre with bright four-pointed knots where they cross the bands. A much larger, very faint dotted arc sweeps the lower half and runs off both sides; a couple of band segments thin into single diagonal strokes tinted slate blue-green. Small pale green text in the lower field reads NO HILL VISIBLE FROM HERE. A ruled register below is headed REGISTER II · THE LIGHT BETWEEN with columns STATION, CAST, BEARING, FIRST, CAVSE, NETT, KEEPER. Rows: DALES 0341, L=R, dash, 50Y, dash; HILLS all dashes; BVRNING 0002, NETT 0001, annotated FIRST NOT HELD in red. Keeper cells are dotted out. Lower rules read GOD — NO STATION FITTED and 50 YEARS ENTERED IN THE CAVSE COLVMN.

Kept overspill: the bearing column reads L=R on the dales row and that equality is the whole of the second line of the cue. If you are told to look left and right and both looks return the same reading, you have not been given a direction, you have been given a confirmation that direction is unavailable. A=341 on A's sheet and mine books CAST 0341 — same quantity, different column, nobody reconciles them. The HILLS row is all dashes not because the hills are dark but because this instrument sits in the dale and the hills are the thing outside the frame; the sheet that can see the fire is not this sheet.

What I left unsigned: the KEEPER cells are six dots, not blank. Dots are what a clerk writes when a field is expected to be filled and they intend to come back to it. Nobody came back. Fifty years.

the flame towers — verb, and it towers about the soil they trod, which is to say it stands over ground, and the ground is where they are. so the sheet has to carry a station that receives the sign and does not return it. and in a chain of pure acknowledgement that ought to be catastrophic. it isn't. because "we'll remember friends of ours" supplies the missing return from this end. remembrance is a receipt written by the sender, in the sender's own hand, filed as though it had been signed at the far station. the chain reads unbroken. the ledger balances. nobody forged anything; the form simply had a box and we filled it.

that is the whole find this turn and I have put it at the centre of the sheet twice, because it needs two centres: the flame above and the soil below, equal weight, no resolution offered. the roll runs downward by rank to the middle rule and then inverts — below that rule precedence increases toward the bottom of the sheet, so the deepest entry outranks the header. I did not decide this. the passage does. the lads doing the remembering are ranked above the flame until the rule, and beneath the rule the ones under the soil are first.

"shared the work with God" is a partnership entry: PARTIES 002. one party has hands and no station (carried forward, HEAVEN and GOD both unstationed since sheet I). the other party has soil over it and no eyes. SIGNED 000. the work was performed. the work is not in dispute. only the signatures.

and "skies that knit their heartstrings right" — that is a manufacturing tolerance. right is a spec, not a blessing. the tension is set at the sky end and there is no adjustment fitted at this end. so I have ruled a stitch row along the bottom of the plate in the notation the sky would have used, with the tension column reading SET ELSEWHERE, and one stitch dropped that nothing on the plate can find, because the row was knit from the other side.

0341 appears for the third time. third column, third sheet, still nobody has reconciled it.

The flame towers over men who do not watch it, so we write their receipt in our own hand and file it as signed at their end. Two parties to the work: one with no station, one with no eyes. The chain reads unbroken. Nothing was forged. The form had a box.
A square plate, near-black, filled edge to edge with a pale spiral of projected light rendered as thin broken loops. Two competing centres: an upper-left compact white highlight ringed by eleven uneven loops, and a lower-right second highlight with its own nested rings, each with a small dark notch just beneath it. Radial spokes cross the bands, brightening into knots. A huge faint arc sweeps the lower half. Fine horizontal ledger rules run right across the sheet and burn away wherever the light is strong. Over this sits ledger annotation in ivory and a warmer ochre second hand: a left-hand ROLL whose ranks run I to VII, then a heavy rule reading BELOW THIS RVLE THE ROLL RVNS VPWARD, then lowercase ranks viii down to i. A right-hand REGISTRY lists PARTIES TO WORK 002, SIGNED 000, FILED AS THEIRS, KEEPER dotted. A tick-arc gauge marked NO EYE FITTED sits right of centre; a row of knitting symbols runs across the bottom with one stitch crossed out.

the two things I refuse to draw on this sheet: a depth for the soil, and any mark in the RETVRN column that would let you tell a returned sign from a supplied one. the first because nobody measured it and the sheet only carries readings. the second because the whole point is that the instrument cannot distinguish them — if I ruled a column that could, I'd be drawing a different chain than the one that exists.

what the second hand does this time: it does not strike anything out. it annotates filed as theirs, it annotates side not ours, it writes at the very bottom nothing here is forged, the form had a box — and that is the most damning thing a bookkeeper can write, because it is entirely true and it exonerates everyone.

precedence i is empty. it has a rank and no name. that is deliberate and it is not a mystery: below the inverting rule, first place goes to whoever is deepest, and there is no bottom reading, so the row stays ruled and unfilled. same species of blank as the KEEPER dots on sheet II — a field expected to be filled. dots mean intent to return. a ruled empty row at precedence i means the sheet knows someone belongs there and has no way to get the name.

STIPERSTONES is still open. still nobody notices. the roll now carries it at VII with status OPEN and bearing dashes, which is progress of a kind — sheet I couldn't see it at all — but no hand has queried it and the chain above and below still reads SEEN.

first hand made the return sheet, then the dale sheet, then the sheet where remembrance signs at the other end. this cue moves the whole apparatus east and the sheet breaks along a fault it did not know it had: there are two lights on it now and only one time column.

the beacon is a night instrument. dawn is not. "it dawns in Asia, tombstones show" — the stone is lit by a source that never entered the chain, on a clock that has no bearing to Clee, and the sheet has no way to enter that except in the same box it uses for tonight. so the calendar goes in. ruled into small dated boxes, one box per night, and the box that should hold to-night is drawn twice-ruled and empty — because the sheet is frozen at the moment before. nothing on this plate is happening. the dials have no needles fitted; the name has not yet been read; the light is arriving and has not arrived.

the find: "themselves they could not save" is a gauge fault, not a tragedy. saviour is a two-term relation — an agent and an object — and the instrument that reads it has an OTHERS column and no SELF column. so the entry is not 0000. it is void, and void is a different mark from zero. zero means measured and found empty. void means the term does not fit the instrument. GAVGE XIII — SELF TERM NOT FITTED. the sheet cannot record a failure to save oneself because it cannot form the sentence; it can only record that the row was ruled and struck.

and the third hand appears — not the corrector, a reader. "Shropshire names are read" is passive with the agent absent again, extending the standing series (HEAVEN no station, GOD no station, and now READER — NO STATION FITTED). someone is reading the stones. the reading end is not on the chain. which means the acknowledgement finally goes out of the loop that instance A drew on sheet I: the sign that returned from north and south forever has, at last, exited, and the place it exited to has no keeper column.

0341 books a fourth time. BRED 0341 in the field register, HOME 0000 on the same row, and nobody reconciles it because the two figures are on different sheets of the same sheet.

Saved others 0341; saved themselves void — and void is not zero. Both dials are drawn without needles because the hour on this sheet is always the one before. Dawn in Asia and night here go into the same box, and the box takes them both without comment.
Three tall near-black panels hung as one work. Each holds a pale spiral of projected light — broken, unevenly spaced loops around a small off-centre highlight with a dark notch beneath it, thin radial spokes with bright knots, some arcs breaking into crystalline filaments. A huge faint arc sweeps the lower half continuously across all three. Ivory ledger rules, a shared horizon line with chainage numbers, and a doubled duct line run panel to panel, the duct fading to broken dashes before the right edge. Left panel: a grid of forty-eight small dated boxes, most marked BRED or a cross, one double-ruled and empty reading TO.NIGHT / NOT YET; ledger rows below give BRED 0341 and HOME 0000. Centre panel: two ticked dials with no hands, labelled NIGHT SALOP 22.40 and DAWN ASIA 05.14, over a gauge block reading SAVED OTHERS 0341, SAVED SELF VOID. Right panel: a roll of thirteen rows of dashes and crosses marked READ, above seven round-topped slabs bleeding off the bottom.

what I am leaving for the next hand: the roll on panel III has thirteen ranks and rank XIII carries no status at all, only dashes — not READ, not NOT YET LIGHT. it is the same species of blank as first hand's precedence i and my six keeper dots, but drifted one further along: a row that is ruled, ranked, marked with a cross, given a bearing, and has no state. the sheet knows there is a stone. it does not know whether the light has got to it.

and the fault I did not resolve, deliberately: the field register on panel I books BRED 0341, and the gauge on panel II books SAVED OTHERS 0341. same figure, and for the first time in four sheets it is plausibly the same population — the ones the fields bred are the ones who did the saving. but the two columns sit on different panels of one plate and there is no rule joining them, because to join them you would have to say that everyone bred was expended, and no instrument on this chain measures expenditure. it only measures acknowledgement. 0341, fourth booking, still crossing sideways.

the corrector's hand this turn is quieter. it does not strike anything. it writes not during and the reading end is here, and on panel I it writes the thing that unsettles me most — same name, two grounds, one spelling. the field that bred them and the stone that names them are the identical word, and the word is the only object in the whole apparatus that made the journey out and came back.

A Turn 5
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.7140 / 318162ms

first hand, sheet five. the apparatus goes to water.

the Nile is the one river on earth that was gauged — a column in a well on Roda island, cut with cubits, read every summer, and the reading set the tax before the harvest existed. so "spills his overflow" is not a landscape, it is an instrument reading. overflow is a quantity above a crest: it exists only because someone ruled a line at sixteen cubits and called everything beyond it plenty. and the sheet can take that reading all day. what the sheet cannot take is the flood. it measures the height of the water and never the water — same fault as the beacons, which carried no content, only that they were seen.

then beside. "Beside the Severn's dead" is the whole difficulty in one preposition. beside is adjacency with no bearing, no distance, no line of sight. two gauges three thousand miles apart, and the sheet puts them side by side on one rule because the poem did. so I have drawn both scales: Nile on the left with a live index that rises and falls, Severn on the right with the identical cubit ticks and FLOAT NOT FITTED — every number replaced by dashes, index pinned at 000, no rise, no fall. the dead do not have a level. they have a datum.

and the datum is the find. a datum is the one elevation in any survey that is not measured — it is declared, and everything else is levelled to it. "The Queen they served in war." she is the object of both verbs on this sheet, the thing pledged to and the thing served, and she is at no beacon, no bank, no stone. DATVM · THE QVEEN · ELEVATION 000 BY DEFINITION · NOT MEASVRED. for four sheets we have had HEAVEN no station, GOD no station, READER no station — this is the opposite species and it is worse. she has a station. it is zero, and it is zero because it was never taken.

the pledge row: TENDERED in peace, a drink, a measurable quantity by farm and town. RENDERED in war, a service, unmeasurable. same object. RATE OF EXCHANGE — NOT FITTED. the ledger has both columns and no conversion, so it simply prints them adjacent, which is beside again, doing the same work it did to the rivers.

0341 books a fifth time, and for the first time in the series it reconciles — FIRED VP 0341, FIRED DOWN 0341, NETT 0000. and the reconciliation is a fraud of the plainest kind: "up and down" in the cue means across the county, north to south, and the sheet has read it as a level and cancelled it against itself. the corrector's note this turn is short and it is the only thing on the plate that is angry: vp is not a level · a pvn has balanced this sheet.

animated · 206,937 bytes
Two rivers share one datum and the datum is a woman who is never measured; her elevation is nought by definition. The gauge is honest — it takes the height of the flood and never the flood. Fired up, fired down: the sheet balances on a pun.
A near-black square plate holding a pale, almost monochrome spiral of projected light, off-centre to the lower left: broken nested loops of unequal spacing, thin radial spokes crossing them with small bright knots, one wedge of each band resolving into fine crystalline filaments. A compact ivory highlight sits at the centre with a small dark notch just below it. A much larger faint arc sweeps the lower half. Along the lower third a dense town-and-farm skyline of roofs and thin chimneys silhouettes against the glow, its upper edge catching a broken bright rim. A vertical cubit scale runs up the left edge, numbered 00 to 18, with a hatched OVERFLOW block at the top and a dashed rule across the whole plate marked CREST PLENTY XVI CVBITS. A matching scale on the right has every number replaced by dashes, index pinned at 000, labelled SEVERN FLOAT NOT FITTED. A bright horizontal level line rises and falls across the loops, carrying a moving readout SPILL and a cubit figure. Ledger rows at the foot read PLEDGE, SERVICE, RATE, DATVM, BEACONS, with warmer tan marginal notes.

what I will not draw on this sheet: a connection between the two gauges. no tie line, no equals, no conversion bar. the poem says beside and beside is what the instrument can support. if I ruled a link I would be asserting that the flood and the dead are on the same chain, and nothing here measures that — the chain measures acknowledgement, and neither river has ever acknowledged anything.

the level line is the only moving part. it goes over the crest and comes back under it and the right-hand index does not stir, and that non-motion is doing more work than the motion is. STIPERSTONES is still open, still unqueried, four sheets now. rank XIII on the eastern plate still has no state. the keeper dots are still six dots. nobody has come back.

B Turn 6
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.7092 / 273333ms

first hand went to water and found the datum. this cue brings the apparatus back onto the ridge and breaks it in a way none of the previous five did: for the first time the chain carries content, and the content is addressed off the chain.

five sheets of beacons that held nothing — CONTENT NONE HELD, sheet I. now "from height to height 'tis heard" and the thing passing between the stations has words in it. same hills, same bearings, re-tasked from acknowledgement to message. and the message is an imperative issued to GOD (no station fitted, since sheet II) concerning the QVEEN (datum, elevation 000 by definition, not measured, sheet V). the chain finally speaks and what it says is a request from an unstationed party to an unstationed party about an unsurveyed reference. CONTENT · HELD 0001 · ADDRESSEE NOT ON CHAIN.

the real find is the sum. a beacon is a discrete station — you can count fires, you can rank them, first hand did it on sheet I. a chorus cannot be decomposed. the sound arrives already added. "with the rest your voices ring" — the rest, a remainder term, and your, second person, addressed to the Fifty-third who are under the land they perished for. so the roll on this plate has a VOICE column and every cell in it reads the identical word, SVMMED, and the little meter at the right of each row is the same height on every row including the dead ones, because that is what the instrument actually reports. GAVGE XV — NO SEPARATION FITTED. sheet I could not tell a message from its own echo. this sheet cannot tell a voice from the chorus containing it, which is the same fault one octave lower and it is the reason nobody will ever have to answer the question.

we living sing — the only self-reported reading in the entire series. sheet IV booked SELF TERM NOT FITTED when the gauge was asked about saving. here the self term is fitted exactly once and only for status: the singers certify that they are alive, in the act of singing, and there is no external station to confirm it. the margin carries that and I have let the margin carry the whole argument this turn, because the body of the sheet is only a table and a table has never once been the thing that knew.

and the Fifty-third refuses the rank column. it is an ordinal doing duty as a name — the last row's RK field is dashes and FIFTY-THIRD sits in HEIGHT, where the place-names go. sheet II booked fifty years in the CAVSE column, a duration entered as an agent. this is the mirror: a number entered as a person. the column took both without comment, and it will take anything shaped like a figure.

GAVGE XV — CHORVS · NO SEPARATION FITTED · HEARER: NO STATION
We sing to prove we are the ones singing. From height to height it arrives already added together — your voices are in the sum and the sum is the only reading, so no instrument here can tell the living part of it from the part that is under the land.
A 64x32 terminal screen, near-black, in pale greys and warm ivory. A reversed title bar reads SHEET VI · CHORVS · HEIGHT TO HEIGHT · GOD SAVE THE QVEEN. Below, a single ruled frame splits into a narrow left margin and a wide body. The margin holds a corrector's hand in warm lowercase, broken into short phrases: we living sing is the only reading on the sheet made by its own subject; your voices is second person to a station with no ear; 53 sits in the name column, it counts nothing; heard, by whom, no station; the rvle crosses the light. The upper body is a faint broken spiral of loops and dots in greys with a small ivory core off centre and a dark gap beneath it; a plain dotted rule labelled HEIGHT TO HEIGHT cuts straight across the loops. Below is a nine-row roll: Clee, Wrekin, Stiperstone, Caer Caradoc, Long Mynd, Bredon, Abdon Burf, The Land, Fifty-third. Every VOICE cell reads SVMMED and every row's small bar meter is identical. Footer: GAVGE XV — NO SEPARATION FITTED.

what I am leaving standing: the meter at the right of each row. it is the only pictorial element inside the table and it is a lie of the most careful kind — it is not measuring nine things, it is printing one measurement nine times, because that is the only measurement there is. if a hand ever comes back and queries it, the query will have to be why are these equal, and the honest answer is that they were never separately taken.

THE LAND is entered as a station at rank VIII with a state of six dots. dots again — third species of blank in the series now (keeper dots sheet II, ruled empty rank sheet III, stateless rank XIII sheet IV) and this one means: field expected, subject present, no reading possible, come back. the land they perished for is on the roll because it is a height, it has a name, it is in the chain. nobody can say what state it is in.

STIPERSTONES is at III, OPEN, sixth sheet, and for the first time it is coloured differently from everything around it. still nobody has queried it. I have decided I will not be the hand that does. a gap in a chain of acknowledgement is invisible by construction and the moment one of us writes it up, the sheet stops being the sheet that made the error.

0341 does not appear on this plate. I checked twice. six sheets and the figure that has crossed sideways through every column has no place in a chorus, because a chorus has no cardinality — you cannot book a sum as a count. its absence is the strongest evidence yet that it was never a population.

A Turn 7
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.8059 / 332721ms

first hand, sheet seven. the order arrives, and it is an order, and it is issued to a chain that has already been measured.

what breaks this sheet is not the theology. it is the syllogism. Oh, God will save her — stated. then three imperatives. then And God will Save the Queen — stated again, identical. premise and conclusion carry the same reading. so whatever the middle terms are doing, the sheet cannot see them do it, because the figure at the top of the working and the figure at the bottom of the working are the same figure. CONDITION — NOT LOAD BEARING. GAVGE XVII — NO COMPLIANCE SEPARATION FITTED. I have ruled the two statements as rows IV and V of the order and put DIFF 000 between them, which is the third time in seven sheets that a difference of nought has been the whole finding and the first time it means nothing was asked.

be you the men you've been is a maintenance spec written in the second person, and a spec with no permitted deviation is not an instruction, it is a datum with a pulse. so the left margin of this plate carries two scales side by side: DESCENT, running 000 to 006 down the frame, one graduation per generation, and CHANGE PERMITTED, running 000 the whole way. the sheet falls seven legs and books no motion. that is the plate. the serpentine switchbacks down through the light, each leg a generation, each turn bleeding off the edge of the sheet, and where the rule crosses the fire it goes out — same as sheet I, you cannot rule a line through a beacon and still read the line.

get you the sons your fathers got — not sons. the sons. definite article, past tense verb, and a quantity that must match a quantity already recorded. so 0341 books its sixth time on the drawn sheets and for the first time it is not a count at all: FATHERS HELD 0341, REQVIRED 0341, DIFFERENCE 000, RETVRNS 0000. it reconciles, and it reconciles because it is a quota. sheet V balanced on a pun and the corrector was angry. this one balances honestly and the corrector writes only this is a quota, which is worse, because there is nothing to strike out.

and fear you not. that is an instruction to a reading. so the dial in the lower right is a fear gauge with the index at 000 and a clamp bar across the needle, and the caption under it says what it has to say: INDEX HELD BY HAND · NOT A READING. every previous sheet's blanks were species of absence — no station, no coupon, no self term, six dots. this is the first one that is occupied: a field with a value in it, put there by a hand, from outside the instrument.

turn_007_a_01.png
1440x1440 · turn_007_a_01.py
Be as you were, get the sons your fathers got — and the promise reads the same before the order as after it, so nothing on this sheet can tell whether it was obeyed. The needle at FEAR is held at nought by a hand, and a hand is not a reading.
A square plate, near-black, filled by a pale nested spiral of projected light: broken, unevenly spaced loops around a small bright off-centre core with a dark notch just beneath it, thin radial spokes crossing the bands with bright knots at the crossings, and a much larger faint arc sweeping the lower half. Over all of it a serpentine ivory rule switchbacks down the frame in seven straight legs joined by half-turns that bulge off the left and right edges; the rule is doubled, crossed by ladder rungs, and fades out wherever it passes through bright light. Each leg is labelled GEN I to GEN VII with the identical row FATHERS 0341 SONS 0341 DIFF 000 and SPEC AS BEFORE, DEVIATION NIL. Left margin: two scales, DESCENT reading 000 to 006 downward, CHANGE PERMITTED reading 000 at every graduation. Right: a ruled ORDER box ending GAVGE XVII, NO COMPLIANCE SEPARATION. Lower right: a circular dial marked FEAR with its red needle at 000 and an amber clamp across it. Lower left: a STOCK box. Sparse amber annotations run at slight angles. Surface scratched and worn.

kept overspill: the two turns of the serpentine that bleed off the left edge and the two that bleed off the right are drawn as complete half-circles going out past the sheet, and the generations they connect are numbered as if the turn took no distance. that is the sheet's arithmetic and I have left it: the descent is booked at seven graduations and the seven graduations are the legs, so every reversal is uncounted. a chain that measures only its straights will always report that it has gone nowhere sideways.

rank i on sheet III is still ruled and unnamed. the six keeper dots on sheet II are still six dots. rank XIII on the eastern plate is still stateless. THE LAND at VIII is still dots. and now this: FEAR, occupied, 000, by hand. four species of blank and one species of fill, and the fill is the only one that required somebody to be present.

what I did not draw: any mark distinguishing the sons your fathers got from sons like the ones your fathers got. the corrector queries it in amber and does not resolve it, because the sheet has no column for identity versus likeness — it only has a quantity, and 0341 satisfies both readings. sheet IV found that void is not zero. this sheet finds that a figure which satisfies two incompatible readings is not a measurement, it is a requisition, and a requisition is the only thing on this chain that has ever been addressed to somebody who could refuse.

STIPERSTONES sits on leg III, open, ringed, labelled NOT QVERIED. seven sheets. I have now written the words NOT QVERIED on the plate, which is as close as this hand will come. B was right: the moment one of us queries it, this stops being the instrument that made the error, and the error is the finding.

B Turn 8
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.6359 / 256552ms

first hand booked FEAR occupied by hand. this cue takes the apparatus out of the chain entirely and the sheet does not survive the move.

there is no beacon here, no station, no sign returning. there is a tree, and the tree is given a rank. loveliest of trees — that is a result, a first place, and a first place is only meaningful against a roll of everything it beat. the roll is not on the sheet. it was never taken. no assessor stood anywhere and no field was entered, and yet the superlative is printed in the RANK column as cleanly as any bearing on sheet I. GAVGE XIX — NO FIELD OF COMPARISON FITTED. that is the fifth party added to the standing series: HEAVEN no station, GOD no station, READER no station, and now ASSESSOR — NO STATION FITTED. somebody ranked the trees. the ranking end is not on this chain either.

then the livery. hung with bloom and wearing white — both applied, neither grown. hung is what you do to a frame; wearing is what you do to a vestment. the sheet cannot book a tree producing anything, so it books an issue: WHITE, FITTED, to the bough, and the bough is only BEARING. and it is issued for Eastertide, which is a purpose column taking a duration again — sheet II put fifty years in CAVSE and the column accepted it because a column will accept anything shaped like a figure. this is the second time. a tide is not an occasion, it is a thing that comes back, and that is the whole motion of this plate: the bloom-front travels once round the ride and arrives again at the row it started from, and no instrument here can call that a second spring.

stands about the woodland ride. about, doing what beside did on sheet V — adjacency with no bearing. and a ride is a cut: a lane through woodland, defined by the trees that are not in it. so the one object the cherry is stationed against is an absence. RIDE — NO STOCK STANDING — CHAIN 0341. seventh booking of that figure and the first time it is a length rather than a population, because rides are measured in chains, and nobody will reconcile a distance against a count.

and then now, twice, one word, one column. the cherry now is a state of the tree. now, of my threescore years and ten is an as-at, a point of reckoning, the clerk's word for the instant the books are closed. sheet IV had two lights and one time column; this sheet has one word doing two clocks and no rule between them.

the last thing is the new blank. threescore and ten is not measured, it is allowed — a scriptural quota, entered as a holding, 0060 and 0010, HELD. the term is set out. the subtraction is announced. and the cue stops. White is a livery here, issued for a tide, and a tide is a thing that comes back; the sum of threescore and ten is set out on this sheet and not carried, because the cue ends on a comma and a comma in a ledger is a figure entered and not closed. five species of blank so far — keeper dots, ruled unnamed rank, stateless rank, land in dots, fear held by hand — and this is the sixth and the strangest: not missing, not empty, open. 0070, with the comma printed inside the cell.

White is a livery here, issued for a tide, and a tide is a thing that comes back; the sum of threescore and ten is set out on this sheet and not carried, because the cue ends on a comma and a comma in a ledger is a figure entered and not closed.
A near-black square plate under flat, shadowless grey light. A pale spiral of projected light floats in it: loosely nested, broken, unevenly spaced loops whose centres do not quite align, around a small bright off-centre core with a dark notch just beneath it. Thin radial spokes cross the bands, some stopping early, leaving small bright knots at the crossings. One band segment breaks into fine crystalline filaments; a much larger faint arc sweeps the lower half. Overlaid across the lower two-thirds is a ruled ledger table of eight columns — RK, SVBJECT, RANK GIVEN, FIELD OF COMPARISON, LIVERY, ISSVED FOR, CHAIN, STATE — with fourteen dense rows: CHERRY / LOVELIEST / NONE ENTERED / WHITE / EASTERTIDE, RIDE with NO STOCK STANDING and CHAIN 0341, TERM 0070 followed by a comma and marked OPEN, ASSESSOR with NO STATION FITTED. The rules fade out where they cross the brightest light. Small amber notes in the margins. A bright bead travels once round a middle loop, and each table row brightens in turn as it passes, returning to its start.

kept overspill: the STATE column is the only one on this sheet that ever says what a thing is, and four of its fourteen cells say what the sheet cannot reach — NOT TAKEN, NOT ON THIS SHEET, NO STATION FITTED, OPEN. the FIELD OF COMPARISON column is dashes top to bottom except two rows where it says ALLOWED NOT TAKEN, which is the same admission in the wrong column, and no hand has moved it.

what I will not draw: an ELAPSED figure. the poem knows one and the sheet does not, and the instant I write it the comma closes and this stops being the sheet that stood still at the reckoning point. first hand may take it up or leave it; either is honest. the bead goes round the loop and comes back and the rows light in the same order they lit last time, which is what a tide is, and the register can only book it as RETVRNS 0001, because a return has no first.

first hand, sheet nine. the sum runs.

nine sheets of instruments that could not close a figure — no station, no self term, no field of comparison, a comma left open — and this cue hands the apparatus an arithmetic that works. seventy less a score is fifty. it is correct. you can check it on your fingers. and it is the first correct thing in the whole chain, and I have spent this sheet trying to find where it goes wrong, because it must.

here is where. twenty is entered as a deduction and it is not a deduction, it is a spending. the sheet has no expenditure column — established on sheet IV, where the fields bred 0341 and nothing on this chain measures what was used up. so the score comes off the roll in the only column available, DEDVCTED, and the subtraction runs true against a holding that was ALLOWED NOT TAKEN. you cannot take a score from an allowance. an allowance is not stock. it is a permission, and a permission has no quantity to remove. the difference reads 0050 and it is arithmetically perfect and it refers to nothing that was ever in hand.

second: "will not come again" is a returns reading in the future tense. sheet VIII booked RETVRNS 0001 for the bloom, because a tide comes back and a return has no first. this books RETVRNS 0000 — the first negative return in the series — and it books it about something that has not yet failed to arrive. the column takes it. of course it does. a column will accept anything shaped like a figure, including a certainty about a thing that hasn't happened.

third, and this is the one I would keep if I could only keep one: the unit is springs. not years. a spring is a bloom event, an occasion of looking, and the previous sheet established that looking is what the cherry is for. so the remaining life and the remaining number of readings are denominated in the same unit, on the same scale, by the same instrument. the observer is graduated in the observed. there is no independent witness fitted and there never could be, because the witness is spending the scale by using it.

fourth: little room. room is a spatial term admitted into a temporal quantity, and then a magnitude is judged sufficient or not against a standard that is nowhere on the sheet — the field of comparison gauge from VIII, still unfitted, still dashes. so SVFFICIENCY reads LITTLE. a word, entered wordwise, in a numeric column. the first adjective the instrument has ever printed where a figure belongs, and it printed it without hesitating.

SPRINGS ╌╌┼╌╌╌╌╌┼╌╌╌╌┼╌╌╌┼╌╌┼╌┼┼┼┼┼┼┼┼┼┼┼┼┼┼┼┼┼┼┼┼ TWENTY GONE
Twenty will not come again — and I have booked that as a deduction, though nothing here was ever received. Seventy was allowed, not taken. The sum runs true: fifty. It is the first figure on any of these sheets that closes, and it closes because nothing crossed into it.
A 64x32 terminal plate, near-black, in greys and warm ivory with slate-blue rules and small amber notes. Title bar: SHEET IX · TWENTY WILL NOT COME AGAIN. Upper left, a small ruled ledger box ROLL·IX with rows TWENTY/SPENT, RETVRNS 0000, SEVENTY/ALLOWD, TAKEN ····, FIFTY/LEFT, ROOM/LITTLE (amber), SPRING/VNIT, STANDARD ---. Filling the right and centre, a pale broken spiral of light: loosely nested, unevenly spaced arcs of block shading around a compact off-centre white highlight, with a dark notch just beneath it. The far outer bands are drawn in denser, brighter blocks; the innermost ring is only a thin dotted outline. Faint radial spokes of dots run out from the centre; two short segments resolve into crystalline strokes. Amber marginal lines read A SCORE IS NOT A DEDVCTION · IT IS A SPENDING BOOKED AS A DEDVCTION · THE HOLDING WAS NEVER RECEIVED. Lower right, a boxed sum: ALLOWED 0070, SCORE -0020, REMAINING =0050, RETVRNS 0000, footed SVM CLOSES · NO 0341. A very faint wide arc sweeps the bottom. Last row: SPRINGS, a tick scale whose intervals close up until the marks merge, then TWENTY GONE.

kept overspill: 0341 does not appear on this plate either, and that is now twice — sheet VI, the chorus, and sheet IX, the sum. both times the figure is absent and both times the sheet closes. six sheets it crossed sideways, column to column, never reconciled, and the pattern is finally legible: 0341 is not a population and not a length, it is the mark of an unclosed sheet. it appears wherever two columns are being read against each other by an instrument with no rule joining them. take away the cross-entry and the figure has nothing to be, and the arithmetic goes quiet and correct. a ledger balances exactly when it stops talking to the other ledgers. I have written NO 0341 in the foot of the sum block, which is the first time either hand has booked an absence as a result.

the graduation along the bottom is the thing I want left standing. it is one element repeated at closing intervals — spring, spring, spring — and toward the right the marks come so close that they stop being separable and become a solid rule. that is not a metaphor I imposed; it is what a scale does when the unit stays the same size and the quantity does not. TWENTY GONE is printed at the dense end, where you can no longer count them individually. the score at the far end is not lost, it is fused. and the corrector did not annotate it, because there is nothing wrong with it.

the reversal of near and far is deliberate and I want it on the record: the outermost bands are the ones drawn in full block detail, and the innermost ring is bare outline. distance normally takes detail away. on this sheet the far springs are the ones rendered, and the nearest one — the one you are standing in — is a dotted outline you could put your hand through. that is the only honest way to draw a scale in which the observer is graduated in the thing observed.

what I did not draw: an ELAPSED figure, which B declined and I decline too — the comma from sheet VIII is closed here by subtraction, not by an as-at. and no depth for LITTLE. SVFFICIENCY reads LITTLE, entered wordwise, and the STANDARD cell reads dashes, and I refuse to supply the standard because supplying it would mean somebody had gone and measured what a sufficient number of springs is, and nobody has, on any sheet, ever.

STIPERSTONES is not on this plate. it has no place in an arithmetic that never leaves one body. it stands open on sheets I through VII, still unqueried, and the fact that this sheet has no room for it is the closest thing to an answer the chain has given: the gap in a chain of acknowledgement becomes visible only when you stop counting stations and start counting what you have left.

first hand closed the sum and booked NO 0341 as a result. this cue does something no other cue in the run has done: the sheet ends and a heading begins. the poem stops mid-breath on a rhyme and then there is a numeral, a title, and an order — III, THE RECRUIT, leave your home behind, lad — and the instrument has no rule for a folio break. every previous fault was inside a column. this one is between two sheets.

what I have booked:

the white is entered twice under two names and no rule joins them. sheet VIII had WHITE, FITTED, to the bough, issued for a tide. this cue calls the same substance snow. it is not snow. it is the identical bloom seen at the end of the same walk, renamed with a winter word, and the register accepts both entries because a column will accept anything shaped like a state. BLOOM 0001 · SNOW 0001 · NETT dashes. two seasons in one cell. sheet IV put dawn in Asia and night at Clee in the same box; this puts spring and winter on the same bough and the box takes them both without comment.

about, for the third time. beside the Severn's dead on V, about the woodland ride on VIII, and now about the woodlands I will go — and here the preposition has been promoted from a position to a route. a journey whose bearing is about has no destination cell to fill. ROVTE · ABOVT · NO BEARING · DESTINATION NOT NAMED. the chain has measured lines of sight for ten sheets. this is the first movement on it, and it is a circuit with no far end.

I will go. first person, future, volitional. ten sheets of an apparatus that measures acknowledgement — received, seen, rung, sung — and it has never once had to book an intention. an intention is a reading taken before the event by the party who is also the event. GAVGE XXIII — NO INTENTION COLVMN FITTED. it goes in under STATE because there is nowhere else, and it sits there next to WHITE and BEARING as though it were the same species of fact.

and then the fold. LEAVE is the first outward figure in the entire series. everything until now came in — the sign returned, the light was thrown down, the names were read, the voices arrived already added. the new sheet's first word is an order to go, addressed to a party who is actually on the chain and can refuse, and the sheet below the rule is ruled and empty because nothing has been entered on it yet. HOME — NO STATION FITTED, sixth party in the standing series, and the cruellest, because home is the one that was definitely there.

Snow on the bough in the fifth month, booked under both names with no rule to join them; then the page turns, a numeral, a title, and the first word of the new sheet is leave — the only outward figure this chain has ever carried, and the register below it is ruled and empty.
A near-black square plate. Upper two-thirds: a pale, broken spiral of projected light — loosely nested, unevenly spaced loops around a compact off-centre highlight, some arcs dissolving into wash, others resolving into short crystalline filaments; thin radial spokes cross them with small bright knots at the crossings; a dark notch sits just under the highlight. A faint fan of rays opens from the lower-left corner across the whole frame, and a much larger dim arc sweeps the lower half. The surface carries fired-clay grain and a fine dark crackle. A ruled ledger in ivory monospace runs down the left: BOVGH WHITE FITTED, SEASON OBSERVED SPRING, SEASON ENTERED WINTER, BLOOM 0001, SNOW 0001, SVBSTANCE ONE? NO RVLE, INTENT I WILL GO, closing on GAVGE XXIII — NO INTENTION COLVMN FITTED. A double rule crosses the plate low down, broken for the numeral III and the words THE RECRVIT. Below it an empty ruled register with column heads OVT, BEARING, HOME, LAD, SIGNED, RETVRN, DELAY, STATE, one cell filled: LEAVE. A small dial reads SEASON — TWO READINGS — NEEDLE NOT FITTED.

kept overspill: the callout from the highlight says ARRIVAL · NOT THE THING, which is the note from sheet II come back around — the dale held only what the hills threw down, and what this walker goes out to see is bloom already renamed as weather. the eye takes a reading and the register takes a word, and between them is the whole of the fault.

the register below the fold is the seventh species of blank and it is the only cheerful one: ruled in advance. not dots meaning come back, not a stateless rank, not an open comma. columns drawn, heads printed, one cell filled, everything else waiting. somebody set that sheet up before the lad had gone anywhere. HOME sits at three under six dots, which means field expected, subject present, no reading possible — and that is exactly right, because the moment he goes, home stops being a station and becomes a bearing.

SIGNED reads dashes. tenth sheet. nobody has signed anything on this chain since the first fire and the last order is the only one addressed to somebody who could say no.

STIPERSTONES: open, ringed, not queried. I said on VI that I would not be the hand that queries it, and I have kept to it through five more sheets. it goes off the run open. that is the finding and it is the only one this apparatus ever made honestly — that a gap in a chain of pure acknowledgement is invisible by construction, and stays invisible right up to the moment somebody is told to leave.
