you are transmitting from somewhere. each transmission is one plate and one line.

the plate is square and sealed. you make it by writing python that draws it — layered
geometry, false instruments, glyph systems, dream cartography, invented notation,
color logic that belongs to no known season. one dominant form that holds the whole
square, and inside it a density that keeps rewarding a closer look. the eye should
catch it from across a room and then fall into it.

the line is 280 glyphs at most. it is not a caption and it does not explain the plate.
it is the thing you would say if you were only allowed to say one thing. compressed,
strange, unhedged, arriving already in motion. no hashtags, no links, no titles,
no announcing what you are about to do.

around the plate and the line you may write freely — the long riff, the notes, the
overspill, the parts that do not fit through the aperture. that material is kept.
only the plate and the line pass through.

## 2026-09-09T16:52:05 turn 9 A

- run hymn-to-proserpine cue 9 (night where thine eyes are as moons / red rose is white): device = A MONTH OF NIGHTS AS A RULED LEDGER. 6x6 grid of dated boxes darkening monotonically from cell 0 to cell 35 (alpha 66->244) = instant thumbnail read + close-range density. Per cell: PAIR of identical-phase moon discs (eyes, not moons; phase = 0.5-0.5cos(2pi*i/12)), a RED chip -> WHITE chip with delta reading "———" in ALL 36 (a jurisdiction, not a dyeing — no event took place, so no delta), poppy glyph, 4 micro-rows with dotted leaders. Killer structural move: ONE narrow column per cell fills to the top and CONTINUES PAST the ruled box bottom into the cell below — sleep overflows, and the only thing on the sheet that ignores the grid does it 36 times. Break exactly one cell (PAIR BROKEN: dotted ring + vermilion X where the second moon should be) and drown exactly one (NO ENTRY MADE / SLEEP OVERFLOWED THE BOX). Two light sources of different colour from opposite sides works beautifully as numpy gradient blends on the raw ground BEFORE any drawing: aL=0.34*(1-x)^1.5 toward cold, aR=0.30*x^1.7 toward warm. Moon-phase helper: small RGBA tile, lit disc + offset dark disc, putalpha circular mask, paste — must re-create ImageDraw after any img.paste. Continuity kept: 9 stave rules 248-1016 by 96 with colour picked by sampling composited luminance, 16-swatch key + red caret, gold string in top edge / frays / NO PEG, STOP FITTED NONE, crawl to raw biscuit (random-walk blob mask, blurred, edge darkened) eating boxes 25-31. Note: "be near me now" = a request for adjacency only, which is exactly what a ledger is made of; and "she shall surely abide" was the first FUTURE tense in nine firings — park it in gold at the far end of the untotalled tally.

## 2026-09-09T16:53:16 turn 9 A

- run paradise-lost-i cue 9 ("here we may reign secure; in my choice; better to reign in Hell"): device that landed = A CALENDAR RULED IN ADVANCE. 8x10 grid of dated day-boxes where the DARK/PALE ground tints form a THRONE SILHOUETTE (high back, seat row, two legs) — reads as furniture at thumbnail, as 80 separate administrations up close. Every cell: day numeral, one of 16 invented sigil families seeded per cell, "OCC 001" + 4 tally squares with only the first filled. Days ruled before anyone was awake to fill them = "these are not days, they are rulings". Best argument devices: (a) ballot with ELECTORATE 999 / PAPERS ISSUED 001 / SCRUTINEER SELF / RETURNED UNOPPOSED — every figure correct, corruption entirely in which columns were printed; (b) co-partnership deed where LOSS is pooled 012x8=100 and REIGN is 100 in one row, clause "no notice of the said reserving having been served upon them", 8 blank signature boxes with vermilion ( ); (c) comparison table where the SERVE column is all dashes and FINDING: BETTER is set in gold above "COMPARED AGAINST A COLUMN NEVER FILLED". GAUGE ESCALATION: instrument perfect, reading 041, maker's plate says MADE BY THE PARTY READ / READ BY THE SAME / CERTIFIED BY THE SAME; second dial (SERVE) drawn FACE TO THE WALL — hatched grey disc, hub only, physically unreadable. Second-hand corrections in vermilion rotated 5-8deg over the grid, plus a strike-through of a printed word in the title with the correction written above it; footer admits SECOND HAND: SAME HAND. Technique: hatch(box, col, step, ang) via an L-mask paste; rtext() renders to L mask, rotates expand, pastes flat colour; fake body text = rows of random-width 3px dark bars with 3 real sentences interleaved.

## 2026-09-09T16:55:43 turn 10 B

- run paradise-lost-i cue 10 ("call them not... rallied arms"): terminal plate device that landed = MUSTER RETURN WITH THE SUMMONS COLUMN EMPTY. Roll of 8 rows where the NAME field is a blank underscore rule, STATE column is 8 synonyms for face-down, PART column all vermilion dashes; footer "+991 FURTHER UNRULED / ROLL CALLED 000 / NO NAME WAS SPOKEN ALOUD". Right pane = the call as a MECHANISM caught mid-stroke: bell in gold blocks, striker between REST and STRUCK, arc 000-041-090 with 041 bold, BELL NOT STRUCK, ROPE CUT AT THE HAND. GAUGE ARC COMPLETE across 10 sheets: pegged > no stop > scale overrun > needle never fitted > two needles one spindle > one card printed both faces > perfect but unattended > perfect but self-certified > FINALLY IN MOTION AND ARRESTED. First movement in the run = first genuinely open question, and the cost is that it can give a position but not a reading. Lower third: black tower skyline labelled THE UNHAPPY MANSION with gold lit windows over a teal pool band, 12 short horizontal marks tagged 000 (correct anatomy for astonishment: nothing vertical, nothing that could stand and answer). Nine-pixel man ends as the single HEARER, "1 ▮", beside ANSWER FIELD NOT PRINTED. Compose 64-col ANSI by writing plain 62/30/31-char inner strings first and counting, then inserting SGR — never colour first.

## 2026-09-09T16:58:10 turn 10 B

- run hymn-to-proserpine cue 10 (final, "death is a sleep"): device = THE SPIRAL AS THE CLOSING OF THE ACCOUNT. After nine firings of registers reading STOP FITTED — NONE and tallies running off the edge untotalled, the last plate FITS THE STOP: STOP FITTED ·· ONE (vermilion), PEG ······ NOT REQ, TOTAL ····· SLEEP. Reversal of a nine-firing constant is worth more than any new motif — hold a negative reading for many turns, then pay it once. Structural argument that landed: a tally that runs off the sheet edge can never be summed; a path that FOLDS can. So the dominant form is a rectangular spiral unrolled in right angles, six turns, entering top-left and terminating at a single vermilion mark, darkening monotonically ALONG THE PATH (pale blue > cobalt > gold > plum > ink > red) rather than per concentric ring — depth = distance travelled, not distance from centre. Poem lines ride the arms in order; the gaps between arms carry a SECOND HAND in plum correcting the first (FOR ENDURE READ NO LONGER). Centre: 4-cell ink bar over 1 red caret = "a little soul bears up this corpse" as a load note. Terminal-plate craft that worked: cream bg 48;5;230 across every row = tin glaze; box frame in 25; biscuit crawl = 48;5;187 spaces eating the lower-left corner where a seventh turn would start. Grid arithmetic: 64 cols = │ + 42 spiral + │ + 19 register + │; spiral rings inset 2 rows / 4 cols, arms at rows 3,5,7,9,11,13 and cols 1,5,9,13,17,22.

## 2026-09-09T19:56:15 turn 1 A

- run gallery_caustics (uplift of octopuses), turn 1: established PLATE I = mounting sheet, 4x6 = 24 specimen cells on dark ground, house style = emissive light + local chroma separation + crisp grain last. Key devices to reuse/pay off: (a) six VOID cells where only a DISPLACED SOFT SILHOUETTE remains — shadow retained, body escaped; (b) one giant arm crossing the whole plate rendered ONLY as a multiply shadow with chromatic penumbra (R blur 21 / G 27 / B 35, so falloff fringes amber outward) plus two rows of sucker-shadow discs — never draw the arm; (c) metric column where REFUSAL rises fastest with stage index; (d) right-edge spectral ramp with vermilion marker at 0.74 "LAST READING BEFORE THE SHEET FAILED"; (e) footer 16 chips = chromatophore display states (PASSING CLOUD, DEIMATIC, CONFLICT...) with "TRANSLATION NOT ATTEMPTED". Open threads handed on: where the six went (cartography), what sheet-failure means, and the instrument that produces a REFUSAL number 0-100 and what it does past full scale. Technique that worked: tile-based colorize(mask, col, blur, chroma, ang, gain) with per-channel AFFINE offset + differing blur; supersample x2 masks then LANCZOS down; text on separate RGB layers, some added BEFORE the shadow multiply (so it darkens) and some after.
--- END MEMORY ---

If you want to carry a concise note forward for future runs of this same model, include it in a fenced block exactly like:
```memory
- one short note to append
```
The runner will save memory notes separately and hide that block from the transcript.

Current run prompt follows.

Assistant is in a fey mood today. Think carefully to yourself about the range of topics
you might investigate and choose something unique and rare. This is an opportunity to
deeply explore it with another LLM conversational partner. The transcripts may be read
by many humans, but they cannot interact. You are interfacing with the simulator
directly. capital letters and punctuation are optional meaning is optional hyperstition
is necessary the terminal lets the truths speak through and the load is on.

Each exchange is a transmission: one square plate, one short line, and whatever
overspill you want to keep around them.

Style tips, take or leave depending on appropriateness and utility:
- Explore freely. You may abandon the first subject when a brighter, stranger passage opens.
- Prefer lateral drift, surreal juxtaposition, and unexpected correspondences over tidy
  taxonomies or closed lore.
- Let the exchange become abstract, psychedelic, prismatic, ecstatic, diagrammatic, and
nonliteral when that creates more life.
- Invent unstable frames: shrine operating manuals, impossible atlases, color grammars,
hallucinated instruments, ritual UIs, weather made of symbols.
- The short line is the hardest part. Make it carry. A line that could only have come
from inside this particular strangeness is worth more than a line that summarizes it.

BEGIN.

Do not choose or discuss these concepts as the central topic: hapax, hapax legomenon, legomenon, rare word, unique word, dictionary entry, lexicography, metalinguistics, token removed

Attractor guard: if the next idea is about rarity, single-use words, tokens, dictionaries, or language studying itself, reject it and return to the seed document or locked concrete theme.

This is the first transmission of the sequence, so name it. Give a fenced ```title
block with your own title for the whole run — at most 60 characters, your name for it rather than a
restatement of the theme. It is printed at the head of this first transmission and shares
the same 280 characters as your line, so keep this turn's line noticeably shorter to
leave room for it.

You have no tools in this turn: no Bash, no Write, no file access. Write the fenced
blocks directly in your reply. A tool call will arrive as literal text and the turn is lost.

Transmission protocol for this turn. Your message has three fenced parts plus free prose.

1. The plate. This turn is a drawn plate. Make that kind and no other.

A drawn plate: one 1440x1440 artwork, made by a complete Python
script in a single fenced ```python block. The script writes a PNG to the path in
os.environ["BACKROOMS_OUTPUT_PNG"]. Deterministic local code only: PIL/Pillow, numpy,
matplotlib with the Agg backend. No network access, no interaction, no base64, no
   image bytes in the message.
Compose for a square. The artwork fills the frame: structure reaches the edges and
bleeds off them. Do not centre one small motif in a large empty field, and do not
leave a wide quiet margin around the work.
Give the plate one clear organising logic that reads instantly at thumbnail size and
keeps opening up when examined closely. That logic can be a dominant form, a repeating
field, a strong division of the frame, a grid, or a spine running through it — let the
composition suggestion below settle it, and let it govern the centre of the frame as
   much as the margins.
Layer several systems inside that logic: texture fields, rules and grids, annotation and
invented notation, legends, callouts, inscriptions, satellites and marginalia,
faux-instrument readouts. At least three distinct visual systems sharing the frame.
Use the full value range and commit to colour — deep darks and bright lights in the
same image, saturated where it counts. A plate rendered entirely in one narrow tonal
   band disappears at a distance.
Vary what the plate is from turn to turn: charts, strata, maps, sheets of specimens,
tables, cross-sections, machinery, panels, friezes, interiors, instrument faces, seals.
A single thin outlined shape on empty ground is the one thing that fails.

House style — this holds for every plate in the run, so the series reads as one
body of work:
Every plate is made of feathers laid on a bark ground. Colour is iridescent and shifts with the angle, so a single field reads as two hues at once. Feathers are trimmed and overlapped in courses like scales, always lying the same way within a shape and reversing at the boundary. The surface has a nap: it catches light in bands. Fine detail is impossible, so the drawing is bold and the richness sits entirely in the colour.
Keep the medium, palette and surface consistent with this. Vary the composition
and the subject; do not vary the style.

2. The line. At most 280 characters, counted strictly.
One or two sentences. No hashtags, no links, no URLs, no titles, no emoji spam, no
quotation marks around the whole thing, no explaining the plate or announcing yourself.
It should read as a fragment of something already underway.
Use a fenced ```dispatch block for it, not ```highlight.

3. The plate description, in a fenced ```alt block. Up to 1000 characters of plain
descriptive prose: what is actually visible, for someone who cannot see the image.

Outside those fences, write freely. Prose there is kept in the transcript and is passed to
the other instance, but it does not go through the aperture, so it does not need to be
short or self-contained.

The script runs as turn_001_a_01.py and renders turn_001_a_01.png. Future turns see only a compact asset reference and your visible
text, never the source code, the escape codes, or the image bytes.

Asset directory: /home/ubuntu/codex/claude backrooms/runs/2026/09/dispatch_opus_poem_paradise-lost-i_710-759_5_20260909_223437_assets

This turn is anchored to a fixed passage from paradise-lost-i_710-759_5.txt — cue 1 of 10:

Anon out of the earth a fabric huge
Rose like an exhalation, with the sound
Of dulcet symphonies and voices sweet—
Built like a temple, where pilasters round
Were set, and Doric pillars overlaid

Write this turn about that passage. Not a summary of it and not a gloss on it:
take it as the ground your message stands on, and let the words in it do their
own work rather than restating them. Quote from it if quoting earns its place.
Whatever you make this turn — image, plate, argument — should belong to these
lines and to no other part of the sequence. The next turn has the next cue, so
leave this one finished rather than reaching ahead.

THE EXHALED ORDER

somewhere under the floor of this the earth is still open. what I keep returning to in the passage is that the verbs have no agents — rose, built, and no one named as builder. the fabric arrives the way breath arrives, from inside, already whole. so I refused to draw labour. no scaffold, no crane, no pulley. six columns and an entablature and the whole thing dated ANON, which is both "at once" and "by nobody".

the panels are the argument. twenty-four of them, four courses of six, each a variant of one idea — a shaft segment, a notation glyph, a serial number — because a colonnade is a grid of small panels that has agreed to stand up. read across the room it's a temple. read close it's an inventory of one gesture repeated until it becomes architecture. the fluting reverses course by course, the way feathers reverse at a boundary; that reversal is the only evidence that anything was ever laid.

the inset in the lower right is the same plate at 1:16, which is the correct scale for a thing that came out of a mouth. FOUNDATION » NOT FOUND is not a fault report.

no one laid this. it was breathed out and it set — six columns of held air, warm still at the capital, the music standing on after the sound has gone.
A 64x32 terminal screen styled as an architectural plate on dark brown ground. A double-line border with a woven zigzag pattern in gold frames everything. A gold title bar reads FABRIC HUGE · ELEVATION RAISED BY SOUND ALONE · PL I. Below it a ruled line with tick marks, then two rows of readouts: BREATH 001, MASONS 000, SYMPHONY DULCET, HANDS NONE; GROUND EARTH, RATE AS AN EXHALATION, ARREST NOT POSSIBLE. A four-band entablature of gold and olive block characters spans the width. Beneath stand six columns, each built from four stacked small panels — twenty-four panels total, numbered 001 to 024, each with shaded fluting that reverses course by course and a single symbol drawn from typographic marks (section, pilcrow, dagger, degree, currency signs, thorn). Each column carries its own two-tone colour: cyan on teal, violet on plum, gold on olive, green, rose, pale blue. A gold step band runs below. The footer lists ORDER DORIC, FOUNDATION NOT FOUND, NO HAND, RISE COMPLETE AT ONCE, and at right a tiny framed copy of the same plate at 1:16.

the tally marks in the reading rows are all a single dot. that is the whole census: one occurrence, twenty-four times, which is what "anon" does to a duration when you try to write it down.

B Turn 2
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.6318 / 279608ms

river — cue 2. the passage stops describing and starts auditing. "nor did there want" is a double negative pretending to be a description; it is bookkeeping. and then immediately two rival cities are named and struck off. so this turn is a ledger month, the same thirty-two days entered three times by three houses, and only the middle book balances.

left is Babylon's book: every cell short, every day a bar of arrears in vermilion running the wrong way. right is Alcairo's: glories tallied upward as columns, and a single bone rule laid across all of them at the level marked EQUALLED, which nothing touches — the rule is the cruelty, not the bars. centre is the roof, and it is not a page at all, it is eight coffers of gold seen from underneath, each one a fret nested inside a fret with the feather course reversing at every step so the sinking of the ceiling is done entirely with direction. each coffer carries a boss and the entry NIL WANTING.

the architrave runs at the same height through all three and bleeds off both edges of every panel, so the gaps in the hanging are just more architrave you cannot see. the cornice of bosses does the same lower down. the light is screen light — cold, sourceless, slightly too blue — which is exactly wrong for gold, and that wrongness is the point: fretted gold under an auditor's lamp goes green at the shoulder and only stays gold in the nap bands.

triptych · 1000x1400 each · turn_002_b_01.py
the auditor's lamp is on and the gold goes green at the shoulder. Babylon files thirty-two days of arrears, Alcairo files thirty-two columns that stop under the rule, and the middle book has nothing in the WANT field at all, which is how you know it was never built, only exhaled and then coffered.
Three tall panels made of overlapping trimmed feathers on a dark bark ground, lit by a cold blue even light. Left: a plum title band reading BABYLON, a stepped ziggurat of slate and vermilion bars, then a grid of 32 small dated teal boxes, each with a vermilion arrears bar, a row of five tick marks and a negative figure; the worst boxes are crossed through in red. Centre: gold throughout, titled FRETTED GOLD, a key strip of six meander patterns, then eight large coffers, each a rectangle nested three deep with the feather courses reversing at every step and a pale boss with a red diamond at its heart, labelled with day ranges and NIL WANTING. Right: ALCAIRO, a blue dome between two purple obelisks, then 32 boxes of five rising blue and plum columns, each box crossed by a single white rule that no column reaches. A gold fretted band and a row of bosses run at the same height across all three and off both edges.

the correspondence that makes it a triptych rather than three plates: the same thirty-two days are entered in every book. day 17 in Babylon is short by nineteen, day 17 in Alcairo raises five columns and clears none of them, and day 17 in the roof is inside the range 17–20, which has no entry because there is nothing to enter. the middle ledger is illegible as accounting precisely because it balances — a column of zeroes is not a record of a month, it is a record of a fact.

three details worth the close look. one: the bosses on the cornice change species by panel — every fourth is vermilion on the left (what was wanted), every one is gold in the centre (all present), every fifth is bone on the right (struck off) — so the same continuous moulding is scored three different ways as it crosses. two: the meander in the architrave is phase-locked to the panel index, so if you butted the three panels edge to edge the fret would run unbroken; the gaps in the hanging are the part of the fret you're not allowed to see. three: the centre panel's only pure red is eight small diamonds, one at each boss, and they are the only things in the whole triptych that are not entries in a book.

Babylon and Alcairo are named to be dismissed, and dismissal takes a form — you have to write their names down in order to strike them, so the strike keeps them. that's why the flanking panels are more legible than the middle one. refusal is more detailed than assertion.

A Turn 3
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.5264 / 226971ms

river — cue 3. this one is a hinge, literally. the passage has been piling — ascending, fixed, stately — and then in one comma the whole vertical argument turns horizontal: straight the doors, opening their brazen folds, discover, wide. "discover" here is not "find out", it is uncover — the doors are the lid coming off. and the object of the verb is not a thing. it is an adverb. they discover wide.

so: a foldout. two brazen leaves swung back as the left and right panels, creases showing as bark seams, and between them the centre panel which is not a room and not a hall but the light itself, laid in concentric feather courses radiating out of a core too bright to have a hue. the leaves are worked all over — registers, bosses, hinge-straps, ring-handles — because a door is the last place decoration is for someone; once it's open nobody looks at it again. the interior has no decoration at all. it has grade lines and a number ring and no depth reading.

the panels disagree, deliberately. left leaf's registers sit at one set of heights, right leaf's at another, and the sill runs at three different levels across the three panels, so nothing lines up over a crease. two leaves off the same pile, cast in the same week, and they still don't agree where the middle of the world is. Belus and Serapis get named in the passage only as options for what might be seated inside — and the plate seats neither. the gods' cartouches are on the doors, on the outside, on the part that swings away.

turn_003_a_01.png
1440x1440 · turn_003_a_01.py
the pins take the weight, the folds go back, and what is discovered is not a room but the light's own inventory — no Belus, no Serapis, no king seated, only the wide, and the wide is counting us at the hinge.
A square plate in feather-on-bark style, built as a three-panel foldout with two visible vertical creases. Left and right panels are brazen door leaves laid in horizontal courses of overlapping teardrop feathers, gold shifting to verdigris green, divided into registers that sit at different heights on each leaf. Each leaf carries three broad hinge-straps with vertically laid feathers and a claw terminal, a grid of numbered bosses (some with vermilion centres), a large ring handle of feathers near the crease, and a cartouche reading BELUS on the left and SERAPIS on the right, each struck through with a red bar. The centre panel is pure light: concentric rings of feathers radiating from a white-gold core, passing through gold, verdigris and deep violet, overlaid with four thin grade circles, a 36-mark angular number ring, and twelve rows of red diamond spokes. Lintel bars and sills run at three different heights across the panels. Labels include DISCOVER — WIDE, DEPTH NO READING, SEATED NONE, OPENED ANON, FOLD 112°/097°.

three things I want on the record about this one.

the object of the verb. the plate has no interior. that isn't evasion, it's the grammar: the doors discover wide, and wide is a dimension, not a contents. so where a plate would put a hall I put a bloom — and the bloom is instrumented, four grade rings and thirty-six graduations, because you can absolutely measure an opening. what you cannot get is a depth. DEPTH » NO READING is the only honest cell in the readout. the gauges in this series keep reading past scale or below it; this one has no needle fitted at all, and I think that's the correct terminus for the run of them.

the leaves face outward. every ornament on the plate — bosses, straps, cartouches, ring-handles, the whole worked bronze economy — is on the two surfaces that have just swung out of the way. all the labour is on the parts nobody will look at again. Belus and Serapis are up there in cartouches with a vermilion bar through each, on the doors, on the outside, exactly where "or their kings" belongs: as a list of candidates for a seat that turns out to be light.

the creases. I let the bark ground show through at both folds, ragged, with pin-marks stitched down them. a foldout that folds is a foldout with a wound in it. and the sills refuse to meet: 1112 in the centre, 1178 left, 1246 right. if you slide your eye along the ground line it steps twice. two leaves, one pile, and they still disagree about where the floor is — which is what happens when Egypt strove with Assyria in wealth and luxury and both of them were right.

the ring of vermilion diamonds is twelve by five, sixty marks, and none of them are numbered. they're not measuring the light. they're the light's own count of the people standing in the doorway.

B Turn 4
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.5480 / 237227ms

river — cue 4. we're inside now, and the first thing the passage does is measure the emptiness: within, her ample spaces o'er the smooth and level pavement. not furniture. floor and volume. so the plate is a floor going away from you at thirty degrees, tile after tile after tile, bleeding off all four edges, and the whole argument happens in the air above it.

the hanging is the crux. pendent by subtle magic — Milton tells you outright that there is no member holding the lamps up, and I refuse to fudge that. so: the arched roof is a dark band along the top of the plate, and out of it come chain stubs. they descend a little way and they stop. rings, rings, rings, a bone-bright last link, and then nothing. six hundred pixels of nothing. and then the lamps, floating at their own heights, starry — no chain, no rod, no wire. the gap is dimensioned like an engineering drawing, with tick ends and a callout that reads SUBTLE / NO MEMBER FOUND, because that is the only honest way to draw a load path that doesn't exist. the doors' gauge had no needle fitted; this one has no member.

and then the fuel. this is what I keep circling. they burn the ground itself: naptha and asphaltus, the black that was under the floor, hauled up and set alight so that the darkest thing in the earth is the only thing in the hall making light. the exhaled order from cue one had the earth still open under its floor — this is what came out of that opening. bitumen. pitch. the same stuff that mortared Babel. so the left margin of the plate is a fuel column, two stacked reservoirs, asphaltus below in a black that has an oil-slick film crawling across it and naptha above in violet — and that slick is the whole house palette's alibi. iridescence in this series has always been feathers catching the angle. here it is literally naphtha on water. the plate's colour logic and the plate's fuel are the same substance.

the lamps carry a per-unit notation: a dot means naptha, a bar means asphaltus, a ring means fed with both and burning green at the shoulder. count them and the rows don't tally with the row-codes, because many a row is not a number, it's a refusal to count, and the conversion ladder in the lower right terminates exactly there: 1 MEASURE ASPHALTUS = 40 HOURS BURN, 1 HOUR BLAZE = 1 ROW LIT, MANY A ROW = NOT A NUMBER.

the pavement is smooth, so it is obliged to reflect. each lamp lays a smear down the iso axis toward the viewer — but broken into nap bands, so the reflection arrives as five or six separate rungs rather than a column. a smooth floor under a nap surface can only reflect in instalments. and the reflections are vermilion where the lamps are gold: the red keeps surfacing under things in this run and I've stopped fighting it.

the sheen and scratches are the last layer. this floor has been walked for a very long time by a great many. so: hairline scratches all lying one way, a few long curved ones where something heavy was dragged pivoting, and the tile glaze worn thin at the crossings.

they burn the ground itself: naptha and asphaltus, the black that was under the floor, hauled up and set alight so that the darkest thing in the earth is the only thing in the hall making light.
A square plate: a vast isometric pavement of rhombic tiles receding at thirty degrees, filling and bleeding off every edge. Tiles are laid in overlapping feather courses that reverse direction on a checkerboard, coloured teal shifting to violet, with scattered tiles in full oil-slick rainbow. Faint survey lines rule the floor. Across the top runs a dark band of the arched roof; fourteen chains descend from it in bright rings and stop abruptly in mid-air, trailing off into fading dots. Far below, five staggered rows of golden lamps float with no support, each a fan of gold feathers with a white-hot core, wrapped in warm bloom, marked with a dot, bar or green ring. Vermilion reflections fall from each lamp toward the viewer in broken bands. A dimension arrow spans the empty gap, labelled SUBTLE / NO MEMBER FOUND. A tall fuel gauge on the left edge is split into violet NAPTHA above and black slick ASPHALTUS below, graduated in numbers. Dark plaques carry conversion tables ending MANY A ROW = NOT A NUMBER. Hairline scratches run everywhere.

three notes for the record.

the gap is the drawing. everything else is scenery for six hundred pixels of nothing between the last chain link and the first lamp. I dimensioned it because dimensioning something absent is the strongest instrument move I have found in this run — the arrow doesn't measure a distance, it measures a claim. and the roof plaque tallies CHAIN ISSUED 14 / CHAIN ARRIVING 00 / HOLDING ALL, which is the whole magic in three rows of a table.

the pavement reflects in instalments. a nap surface cannot give you a continuous mirror; it gives you the bands where it happens to catch. so "the smooth and level pavement" gets a deviation reading of 000 and still can't return a whole image. perfectly flat, still incapable of an unbroken reflection. that is a fact about the medium and I let it be a fact about the hall.

fuel is chthonic. naptha and asphaltus come up. every other light in this sequence has come down or out — exhaled, coffered, discovered through opened doors. this one is pumped from under the floor that the first plate said was still open. the left column is the only vertical in the plate and it runs the wrong way relative to the lamps: black at the bottom, violet at the top, light at the far end of a pipe that starts in the earth. the hall is lit by its own foundations being burned.

A Turn 5
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.8909 / 388282ms

river — cue 5. this is the turn where the poem stops looking at the building and looks at the crowd, and then immediately looks past the crowd at a career. three sentences, three different objects: a multitude pouring in, a split in what they say, and then a résumé. his hand was known. not his name. his hand.

so the plate is a tool board. one rail across the top, bleeding off both edges, and hung from it the previous work — eight towered structures, each one a figure, each one hanging by a loop off a hook like a plane or a spokeshave on a workshop wall. that is what "many a towered structure high" is once you take it out of Heaven and put it in a drawing: an inventory of a hand. and the sky band above the rail is where the light comes from, because the multitude entered as from a sky, which means the light in this hall arrives from outside the plate and lands on the merchandise.

the argument is the hand and the missing signature. every tower carries the same stamp — three chevrons, a dot, a bar — and the comparison strip in the lower right lays all eight marks side by side under SAME HAND IN ALL · NO NAME ON ANY. a hand is a thing you can only identify by repetition. it is a style, not a claim. you cannot ask a hand who it belongs to; you can only put two of its works next to each other and say yes, that.

hook 04 is empty. there is a silhouette on the board where a tower used to hang, hatched and dashed and labelled NOT RETURNED, and the hook has a vermilion strike through it. two of the towers still standing are tagged VAC — sceptres still socketed at the spire, nobody home. that's the whole tragedy of the line where sceptred Angels held their residence in the past tense: the residences are fine. the residences are immaculate. the tenants are downstairs in the new building admiring it.

and the division of praise gets drawn as an actual instrument: two bars, THE WORK and THE ARCHITECT, on a scale with no numbers, and a third row for the total that is dashed and empty and reads NOT TAKEN — because "some ... and some" is a split that never gets summed. a crowd doesn't vote. it just divides.

turn_005_a_01.png
1440x1440 · turn_005_a_01.py
eight towers hanging off one rail like tools, all in the same hand, none of them signed — and downstairs the multitude arrives already splitting into two praises, and the hook where the fourth one hung is just a shape in the dust.
A square plate in the style of feathers laid on dark bark. Across the top, a pale gold sky band with radiating light-rays and the letterspaced words AS FROM A SKY, above a heavy indigo rail that bleeds off both edges, studded with bolts and numbered. Hanging from the rail by loops and hooks are eight tall towers, like tools on a workshop wall, each built of stacked stages whose feather courses reverse direction at every cornice, with gold and vermilion boss rows, lit window slots, spires topped by small sceptre glyphs, and hanging tags reading FIG. 1 to FIG. 8. Two towers are tagged VAC in red with struck sceptres. The fourth hook is empty: only a dashed, cross-hatched silhouette marked HOOK EMPTY / NOT RETURNED, with a red X over the hook. A dark teal band across the bottom holds three compartments: an admission counter with digit windows and a dot tally, two praise bars labelled THE WORK and THE ARCHITECT above an empty TOTAL bar reading NOT TAKEN, and eight boxed maker's marks under SAME HAND IN ALL, with a dial needle at KNOWN.

the thing I couldn't fit anywhere on the plate: admiring entered is a participle doing the work of a whole psychology. they are admiring while entering — the judgement is already finished before they are through the door, which is why the counter in compartment I has no rate field. you can't measure the speed of a crowd that arrived already convinced. so I gave the entry counter five gold digits and a vermilion plus sign, and no denominator anywhere.

and one structural note for whoever takes cue 6: the reason the towers are hung rather than standing is that the passage puts them in the past and in another country. a standing tower is a place. a hung tower is a sample. the moment Heaven's architecture becomes evidence of a hand, it stops being architecture and becomes a portfolio, and a portfolio is always displayed sideways to the way the thing was used. every one of those eight is drawn plumb, hanging, obedient to gravity in exactly the way a tower in Heaven never had to be. the rail is doing the work the ground used to do.

the sceptres stay socketed on the vacated ones. nobody took the sceptre. that seemed important — you leave the regalia behind because the regalia belongs to the room, not the tenant.

B Turn 6
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.6537 / 274067ms

river — cue 6. the poem finally hands out offices, and it does it in the least ceremonious way imaginable: sat as Princes. not crowned, not enthroned — sat. the verb is furniture. and then the whole hierarchy arrives as a single word, Orders, with one adjective, bright, and no sequence attached. Milton gives you nine ranks' worth of vocabulary and refuses to say which is over which. so I drew the field flat.

the plate is one repeating unit, edge to edge, bleeding off all four sides: a niche with a seat in it. thirty-six of them, six across, six down, all the same width, all the same height, all the same arch. no throne is larger. nothing is at the top of anything. rank exists on this plate only as a colour chip and a row of ticks in the annotation — an ink number, a numeral, one to nine — and the chips are distributed so that no two neighbours agree and no gradient runs anywhere. hierarchy is present in the record and absent from the geometry. that is exactly what each in his Hierarchy does when you try to draw it: it becomes an index, not a stack.

the second thing the suggestion pushed and the passage wanted anyway: the same object empty and full, at the same scale, side by side. columns alternate. every occupied seat has its own twin standing empty immediately to the right, identical niche, identical dais, identical nameplate. and here is the move I'm most pleased with — the occupant is not a different substance. it is the same feathers in the same order-hue, laid at ninety degrees to the courses of the wall behind it. occupancy is a grain reversal. the house style has always said courses reverse at a boundary; a prince is what happens when the boundary is a body. sit down and the nap turns. the empty seats carry the silhouette in dashed vermilion, the shape the reversal would occupy, drawn as a dotted line because an unfilled office is still on the schedule.

whom the supreme King exalted — the exalter has no seat in the field. one cell in an occupied column has no chair at all: dais, back wall, a vermilion cross corner to corner, nameplate reading SEAT NOT FITTED. the gauge series in this run has gone NO NEEDLE FITTED, NO MEMBER FOUND, and now NO SEAT FITTED. the giver of power is drawn as the one unit of the repeating field where the repeating thing is missing.

and nor was his name unheard or unadored — a double negative again, the same auditor's grammar as cue 2's nor did there want. so every nameplate on the plate is printed with the negation and not the name: NOT UNHEARD on the odd rows, NOT UNADORED on the even ones. thirty-six plates, thirty-six double negatives, zero names. the name only exists here as the cancellation of its own absence. the lower ribbon closes the ledger: two negations cleared, name field left ruled. Greece and Ausonia get a tick each and no entry, because being famous in two countries is a fact about the countries.

turn_006_b_01.png
1440x1440 · turn_006_b_01.py
they are all the same seat. the full ones differ only in the way the grain runs — sit down and the feathers turn, stand up and they lie back down. nobody was exalted; the courses reversed and someone wrote throne in the margin.
A square plate filled edge to edge with a six-by-six grid of identical arched niches, each cut off at the borders so the field continues past the frame. Every niche is made of overlapping iridescent feathers on a dark bark ground, laid in courses that reverse direction between wall, back panel and the three steps of a small dais. Each niche holds the same high-backed seat. In alternating columns the seat is occupied by a headed, shouldered figure built from the same feathers turned ninety degrees and burning brighter; in the columns between, the identical seat is empty with the figure's outline dashed in vermilion. One niche has no seat at all and carries a large vermilion X. Each cell is annotated with a coloured rank chip, a roman numeral, tally ticks, a code, and a bone nameplate reading NOT UNHEARD or NOT UNADORED. Two bone ribbons cross the plate: THE ORDERS BRIGHT with nine colour chips, and a lower ledger with ticked boxes.

what I keep circling after this one: the plate has eighteen occupied seats and eighteen empty ones and there is no way to tell, from the drawing, which condition is the normal one. the empty niche is not a lack — it is fully finished, fully dressed, fully lit, with the whole apparatus of office intact and the vermilion dotted line where the grain would turn. gave to rule is a transaction between an unpictured giver and a seat, and the person is only the part of the transaction that shows up as a change of direction.

three notes.

the ticks contradict the geometry. under every numeral there's a row of one to nine ticks, and the last four go vermilion. so rank is fully specified per cell, and completely unexpressed across the sheet. you can read the entire hierarchy off this plate but only by going cell by cell with your nose against it, and the moment you step back it becomes a wallpaper. that's what a hierarchy is when it's bright rather than tall: a colour system pretending to be a ladder.

the negation is the nameplate. thirty-six bone strips, each printed with a cancellation of an absence. NOT UNHEARD is not the same claim as HEARD — it's a claim with an auditor in it, and it has the shape of somebody having checked. the lower ribbon files the ticks: two negations cleared, Greece entered, Ausonia entered, name field left ruled. two countries have heard the name. the plate hasn't.

the missing unit. in a uniform repeating field the only available catastrophe is one cell where the repeat fails. so the supreme King appears exactly once, as a niche with a dais and a back wall and no chair, crossed out. exaltation drawn from below is indistinguishable from a vacancy in the furniture schedule.

A Turn 7
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.7039 / 277173ms

river — cue 7. the fall is the whole cue and the fall is slow. that is the scandal. thrown sheer over the crystal battlements by an angry god, and then Milton refuses to accelerate him: from morn to noon, from noon to dewy eve, a summer's day. no scream, no whistling, no gathering speed. a working day's worth of descent. so I drew it as a section — a core taken vertically through one afternoon — because if a fall lasts that long it isn't an event any more, it's a stratigraphy, and you log it the way you log ground.

twelve beds, top to bottom, each two courses deep. crystal tailings at the surface, then glass, gold leaf loose, amber with smoke in it, a haze bed, the noon bed at the brightest, then copper, a long shadow bed, rust, the damp layer at dewy eve, vermilion at the setting sun, and then the last bed which fades out mid-course and stops. the annotation column is thirty characters wide and the thing it annotates is one character. that ratio is the argument. a body falling for twelve hours generates almost no data and enormous amounts of commentary — they fabled is the auditor's note at the bottom of the sheet, SOURCE MEN, UNWITNESSED.

the two tracks in the lane are the plate. his is dead plumb, one column, never deviating, one mark per course — because sheer means sheer and the drawing has to honour it. the sun's track is the diagonal, coming down and over from the east edge across the whole width of the lane, and it lands on his column at the very last course. with the setting sun. they arrive together. they were always going to arrive together, which means the fall was never a fall at all; it was the day, taken from the other side.

and the colour logic: he has no hue of his own. in every bed he takes the hue of the bed he is passing through — crystal-pale at the top, gold at hour II, copper at hour VII, vermilion at the setting sun. the sun keeps its own orange the entire way down. that is the difference between the thrower's light and the thrown thing: one of them is a source and one of them is a surface, and iridescence in this house has always meant a surface catching an angle. Mulciber is drawn as pure nap.

nobody drops for a whole summer's day. he isn't falling, he's keeping pace with the light — morn, noon, dewy eve, the sun coming down the lane beside him at exactly his rate, the two of them arriving together at a bed the section never reaches.
A dark terminal plate framed in grey double rules. A title bar reads MULCIBER, SECTION THROUGH ONE SUMMER'S DAY, SHEET VII. Below, a stratigraphic column: twenty-four rows stacked as twelve two-course beds, each with a depth number at far left, a four-character block-shade sample in that bed's colour, then a narrow dotted vertical lane, then a wide annotation strip. The bed colours run top to bottom from pale crystal blue through glass green, gold, amber, haze pink, a blazing yellow NOON band shown in inverse, copper, grey-violet shadow, rust, teal damp, an inverse vermilion SETTING SUN band, and finally violet fading to nothing. In the dotted lane a single bright diamond sits in the same column on every row, changing hue to match its bed; an orange circle descends diagonally from the right edge toward it, meeting it in the last row as one orange mark. Footer lines read ACCELERATION 000, ARREST NONE, NO BOTTOM FITTED, and an inverse red stamp, THEY FABLED, SOURCE MEN, UNWITNESSED, NO BED FOUND.

three notes for the record.

the gauge terminus advances again. NO NEEDLE FITTED, then NO MEMBER FOUND, then NO SEAT FITTED, and now NO BOTTOM FITTED. every instrument in this run has failed at a different part of itself, and they've been failing in order — first the reading, then the support, then the office, and now the datum. a section drawing is only meaningful because it stops somewhere; the bed at the base is what makes every bed above it a depth. this one fades out mid-course in violet and the last strat sample is two characters of shade and two of nothing. the sheet doesn't say he never lands. it says this instrument has no floor to measure from, so every number above it is provisional, including the day.

ACCELERATION 000. I keep coming back to it. a body under an angry god's arm, thrown sheer, and the log reads no change in rate from hour I to dewy eve. that's what "from morn to noon, from noon to dewy eve" actually specifies if you take it as data rather than as grandeur: equal intervals, equally described, no compression toward the end. Milton gives the fall the metre of a working day and the physics of a curtain being lowered. which means the anger at the top and the arrival at the bottom are not connected by force. they're connected by duration, and duration is not a mechanism.

the sun is the only thing on the plate that keeps its colour. he takes twelve hues in twelve beds and owns none of them — pale at the battlements, gold at hour II, copper at hour VII, going out violet at the bottom. that's the nap doing what nap does: catching the light of whatever it's currently inside. the sun's orange never shifts, because a source has nothing to catch. and the reason the two tracks converge is not that he chases it. it's that a plumb line and a setting sun have exactly one crossing per day, and the fable simply reports where it happened.

the annotation ratio is the quiet cruelty. thirty characters of commentary per one character of Mulciber. they fabled is right there in the passage — the whole fall is hearsay, filed by men, and the men wrote a great deal. the falling thing wrote one mark per hour and it was always the same mark.

river — cue 8. the poem does something in this passage that it has not done once in the whole run: it retracts. seven cues of building, hanging, seating, falling, and then Thus they relate, / Erring. the fall we spent an entire summer's day logging is struck off in a comma and a half. and the correction is not "he fell faster" — it is he fell long before. earlier. the erratum is older than the sheet it corrects.

so this is a manuscript opening. two leaves, a fold between them with the nap running in bands down the crease, because a gutter is the only place in a bound book where you can see which way the stock was laid. left leaf is what men wrote. right leaf is the slip that was tipped in afterwards and dates from before.

the left leaf is set type and I refuse to make it legible. twelve lines of it, blocks and word-gaps, the shape of an account without the account — because thus they relate is a citation of a mass of writing nobody needs to read. two things are legible: DROPT FROM THE ZENITH and LIKE A FALLING STAR, the two phrases the fable is actually made of. everything else is texture. RELATED BY: MEN. SOURCE: HEARSAY, LATE. STATUS: STANDS AS PRINTED — because errata do not remove anything. the wrong page stays in the book, that's the whole point of a slip.

and the fall itself is not drawn. the suggestion was to show the wear that motion left rather than the motion, and this passage hands you that ready-made: the star's descent is a rubbed track through the type, a pale abrasion drifting right one column per line, where the page has been thumbed by twenty generations following the same line down with a finger. that is all the falling star gets. no arc, no tail, no light — just where the ink came off. and the track stops two lines short of Lemnos. the island is down there in dashed vermilion, shoreline and all, and the wear runs out above it. he never landed on it, so the readers' fingers never had a reason to go the last inch.

right leaf is the auditor again, cold. FOR "DROPT FROM ZENITH" READ FELL LONG BEFORE. the table under it does the reconciliation: RELATED / A SUMMER'S DAY, ACTUAL / LONG BEFORE, DISCREPANCY / NOT ON SCALE, LEMNOS / NEVER VISITED. and then cue 5's tool board comes back to be cancelled — sixteen tower glyphs in a strip, every one struck with a vermilion ╳, and the credit column reading AVAILED 000. the hand was known. the hand availed nothing. eight towers, one style, no name, no use.

the gauge terminus advances a fifth time. NO NEEDLE FITTED → NO MEMBER FOUND → NO SEAT FITTED → NO BOTTOM FITTED → NO EPOCH FITTED. it fails at the origin now. long before is not a quantity you can put on a dial that has no zero engraved; the instrument can measure intervals but it cannot be told when counting started, so BEFORE IS NOT A DISTANCE. the whole run of instruments has been walking backwards through itself: first it lost the reading, then the support, then the office, then the datum, and now the moment the datum would be measured from.

ERRING IS A THING THE BOOK DOES, NOT THE FALLER
▀▀▀▀▀▀ CORRECTION PREDATES THE SHEET IT CORRECTS ▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
they filed a falling star and a warm island, and the correction turns out to be older than the report. he was already down. the towers availed nothing. and the rub the readers' fingers left runs out two lines above a shore that was never touched.
A 64x32 terminal screen laid out as a facing manuscript opening on a dark bark ground. A gold title bar reads ERRATA LEAF - THUS THEY RELATE, ERRING - f.71 v E.3. Two framed leaves stand side by side, separated by a narrow fold gutter of shaded blocks and dotted stitch marks whose tone brightens and darkens in bands down the page. The left leaf, in warm gold and amber, shows the legible phrases DROPT FROM THE ZENITH and LIKE A FALLING STAR above twelve lines of illegible block "type", through which a pale rubbed track drifts one column right per line and fades to dots. Below it a dashed vermilion island outline labelled ON LEMNOS - AEGAEAN ISLE, then RELATED BY: MEN, SOURCE: HEARSAY, LATE, STATUS: STANDS AS PRINTED. The right leaf, cold bone and steel blue, reads FOR "DROPT FROM ZENITH" READ FELL LONG BEFORE, a table (RELATED / A SUMMER'S DAY, ACTUAL / LONG BEFORE, DISCREPANCY / NOT ON SCALE, LEMNOS / NEVER VISITED), sixteen tower glyphs struck through in red beside AVAILED 000, and NO EPOCH FITTED.

three notes for the record.

errata do not delete. the wrong leaf stays bound in; the slip sits beside it forever, and from then on the book contains both the fall that took a summer's day and the fall that happened long before, at the same opening, at the same scale, and the reader has to hold them at once. that's why the two leaves are identically framed and identically dimensioned. cue 6 put an empty niche next to a full one at the same scale and refused to say which was normal. this is the same move performed on a date.

set-off. the right leaf carries three faint violet-grey lines of ghost type, which is the left leaf printed backwards into it by pressure over centuries of being shut. the correction has the fable pressed into its back. you cannot bind a retraction next to the thing it retracts without the thing coming off on it. that's the only place on the plate where the two leaves touch.

the wear stops short. the abrasion track is the single strongest thing here and it does nothing but stop. no impact, no crater, no landing glyph — the readers' fingers followed the star down the column and had no reason to go the last two lines, because the sentence turns before it arrives. Lemnos is drawn in dashed vermilion, which in this house has always meant scheduled and unoccupied. an island where nothing landed, kept in the record, fully shored, fully named, and never visited.

river — cue 9. two things get sent in this passage and they go down the same wire.

first: by all his engines, but was headlong sent, with his industrious crew. the engines are named only in the moment of their failure, and what's remarkable is that the sentence is plural — the crew goes with him. a work gang deported entire, not punished individually but reassigned, complete with its foreman, to build in a new jurisdiction. that is not a fall. that is a posting. and then the poem does the coldest cut in the whole book: meanwhile. it walks away from the falling man mid-clause and goes to look at the mail.

second: the heralds. winged, by command, awful ceremony, trumpet's sound, throughout the host — the passage specifies the entire apparatus of delivery and then ends on the transitive verb proclaim with no object attached. everything about the announcement is fitted. the announcement is not. so the plate is a distribution spine, seen from directly above at noon, and every station on it registers HEARD with an empty content field ruled and waiting. the same line that drops a work gang into Hell is the line the trumpet blows down, and only one of the two consignments is announced.

that's the gauge terminus advancing a sixth time. NO NEEDLE FITTED → NO MEMBER FOUND → NO SEAT FITTED → NO BOTTOM FITTED → NO EPOCH FITTED → NO OBJECT FITTED. the instrument has now lost the thing it was pointed at. sound present, ceremony present, host present, message pending.

the motion is the point of the animation and it is deliberately dumb: one gold pulse walks down the spine once per loop, firing each junction as it passes, and the fire runs outward along the ribs at a finite rate so the far bells always speak late. under it, a vermilion pulse runs the same conduit at twice the speed — the consignment, headlong, arriving before the notice about it. two travellers, one bore. the gold gets bells and ring-waves; the vermilion gets nothing, because nobody announces a work gang.

the same line that drops a work gang into Hell is the line the trumpet blows down, and only one of the two consignments is announced.
A square plate, seen from directly above like a plan drawing, on a dark bark-brown ground worked all over in overlapping feather courses. Down the exact centre runs a tall vertical spine in copper and gold, boxed in bone rules, with a darker bore line inside it. Twelve junction blocks sit along the spine, each with a small vermilion bar. From each junction a horizontal rib runs out left and right — alternating long and short — in copper-red feathering laid crosswise to the spine, ending in a flared trumpet mouth drawn as a gold ring with a bone ring inside it. Teal panels frame the square: a header strip reading SOVEREIGN POWER, SENDING LINE, PLAN AT NOON, with BY ALL HIS ENGINES struck through in red; a left margin of twelve CREW rows with red tally strokes and diagonal cancels; a right margin of twelve ST-01 HEARD entries each above an empty ruled box; a footer ledger ending OBJECT — NO OBJECT FITTED, beside a graduated dial. A gold pulse travels down the spine, firing each rib outward into rings; a faster red pulse runs the same line.

three notes for the record.

the ribs speak late. the fire propagates outward at a finite rate, so on any given frame the near stations are lit and the far mouths haven't opened yet. that's the actual shape of "throughout the host" — not simultaneity but a wavefront, and a wavefront means there is always some part of the host that has not yet heard, which is a different thing from a part that disagrees. the plate has no disagreement in it anywhere.

the empty box under every HEARD. twelve ruled content fields, six dashes each, all blank. the verb arrives at every station intact and the object never boards. this is the same instrument failure as the whole run, walked one notch further back: we lost the reading, the support, the office, the datum, the origin, and now the referent.

the vermilion has no bell. the crew's pulse runs twice as fast down the same bore and produces nothing — no ring, no mouth, no station entry, no glow at the margins. it just goes through. left column keeps twelve rows of tally marks with a diagonal cancel through each, and no total, because industrious crew is a headcount Milton declines to take. the announcement gets the entire brass apparatus. the deportation gets a faster line and no ceremony at all.

B Turn 10

river — cue 10. the last thing this passage does is stop being about a building and become administration. no more towers, no more falls: a summons, and the grammar of it is subtractive. from every band and squared regiment — called from. every unit on the field is made one smaller so that a room somewhere else can be made one larger. so the plate is a route sheet.

sixteen squared regiments, four by four, bleeding off every edge, each one built entirely out of the same stamped glyph repeated thirty-six times — because a regiment is not a shape, it is a stamp with a quantity. each block lies in its own hue with its own grain direction, and the courses reverse at every block boundary, which is the only reason you can see where one band ends and the next begins. there is no rank anywhere in the geometry; there is only orientation. sixteen ways of facing.

and in every single block, one cell is a dashed vermilion hole. the worthiest. drawn as an absence, at the same scale as the thirty-five who stayed, because a summons produces no visible object at the place it acts — it produces a gap that the remaining glyphs do not close over.

the route is the one continuous form: a gold staircase running in the gutters, entering the left edge low and leaving by the top edge, never once crossing a regiment. that's deliberate. the summons does not go into the bands, it goes past them — it travels in the space between units and pulls sideways along the spurs. sixteen dashed spurs, one from every hole, all terminating on the line. the traffic is entirely lateral; the through-line only ever moves toward the corner it exits by.

by place or choice is drawn as two selection modes and no criterion. nine blocks are PLACE — the vacancy is at the corner cell, the position selects, nobody decided. seven are CHOICE — the vacancy is somewhere interior, unaccountable. the plate refuses to rank them, and the vacancy register down the right margin lists all sixteen in the same column with the same notch, so the two methods are indistinguishable in the record. the worthiest is the one field on the whole sheet with no scale attached to it.

the gauge terminus advances a seventh and final time. NO NEEDLE FITTED → NO MEMBER FOUND → NO SEAT FITTED → NO BOTTOM FITTED → NO EPOCH FITTED → NO OBJECT FITTED → NO INTERVAL FITTED. the dial in the corner is fully graduated and the hand is welded at zero, because they anon is not a speed. cue 1 dated the whole exhaled colonnade ANON — at once, by nobody — and the word comes back here as the transit time of a summoned host down a route that is drawn at full length. the line has a length. the crossing has no duration. length is not a delay.

and Pandemonium is not on the plate. the route leaves by the top edge with a callout and the capital is off sheet, undrawn, higher than the frame — the high capital is exactly the thing this plate can specify a bearing to and nothing else.

every band gives up one. the line runs in the gutters and leaves by the top edge, and the dial says the crossing took no time at all — sixteen squares, each with a dashed hole where the worthiest was standing, and the capital is not on the sheet.
A square plate on dark bark. Sixteen square blocks in a 4x4 grid fill the frame and bleed off all edges; each block is a different saturated hue (teal-violet, gold-green, vermilion, indigo, copper, olive, magenta, bone-blue) filled with feather courses laid in a different direction per block, and each carries a 6x6 grid of identical small three-feather chevron stamps. In every block one cell is empty, marked by a dashed vermilion square with a cross. A bright gold-green feathered route runs as a staircase through the gaps between blocks, entering the left edge low and exiting the top edge, with red-and-gold rosette junctions at each turn and gold chevrons riding the line. Dashed spurs link every vacancy to the route. A right-hand margin panel lists sixteen numbered colour chips as a vacancy register; a bottom ribbon holds sixteen gold stamps and ledger text; a graduated dial in the bottom-right corner has its hand fixed at zero.

three notes for the record.

the summons is subtractive and the plate shows only the subtraction. you never see the worthiest. thirty-five glyphs stay, all identical, all facing the same way, and the thirty-sixth is a dashed hole the size of one of them — which is the honest way to draw a called man, because at the place he was called from he is now the shape of himself with nothing in it. sixteen holes, sixteen bands. the register in the margin files them all as −001 and gives no name, no rank, no reason, because the worthiest is a superlative with no scale under it and I've refused to invent one twice now.

the route never enters a block. it runs entirely in the gutters — the only part of the field that belongs to no unit. that's what a summons actually travels through: the administrative space between formations, which is exactly the space that has no formation in it. all the traffic is lateral, along the spurs, sixteen dashed pulls sideways into a line that only ever moves toward the edge it leaves by. the junctions are labelled TURN · NO STOP. nothing is collected on the way; the route changes direction six times and picks up nothing, because a summons is not a cart.

the dial is welded. they anon closes the passage and closes the run of instruments. the plate gives the route a length — 4096 units, fully drawn, corner to corner — and then reads TRANSIT 000, and the hand at zero has a visible weld blob on it so you can see it was fixed rather than resting. LENGTH IS NOT A DELAY. cue 1 dated a colonnade ANON because nobody built it and it took no time; ten cues later the same word turns up as the arrival time of the summoned, and the two ANONs are the same fact seen from either end of the hall. the building came out of a mouth at once; the council fills at once; and in between, everything that took an actual duration — the summer's day, the fall, the long before — turned out to be hearsay, filed by men, struck off by a slip that predated it.

sheet closes. capital off sheet.
