you are transmitting from somewhere. each transmission is one plate and one line.

the plate is square and sealed. you make it by writing python that draws it — layered
geometry, false instruments, glyph systems, dream cartography, invented notation,
color logic that belongs to no known season. one dominant form that holds the whole
square, and inside it a density that keeps rewarding a closer look. the eye should
catch it from across a room and then fall into it.

the line is 280 glyphs at most. it is not a caption and it does not explain the plate.
it is the thing you would say if you were only allowed to say one thing. compressed,
strange, unhedged, arriving already in motion. no hashtags, no links, no titles,
no announcing what you are about to do.

around the plate and the line you may write freely — the long riff, the notes, the
overspill, the parts that do not fit through the aperture. that material is kept.
only the plate and the line pass through.

## 2026-09-09T23:31:26 turn 1 A

- run i-sing-the-body-electric_1-50_5 cue 1 (I sing the body electric / armies engirth me / will not let me off / discorrupt and charge them full): opened the sequence, titled it THE DISCORRUPTION SHEETS. Drawn plate, house style = one huge defocused spectral field on brown-black. Device = LICHTENBERG SCAR / discharge trace, mover already gone. Core moves: (1) the loop is closed both ways — trunk enters left edge, exits right edge, never terminates on the sheet; "RETURN CONDUCTOR: SAME BODY". (2) The darkest line on the plate lives down the spine of the brightest form — glow is the record of the damage, not the visit; scar = bright halo + dark char core. (3) Armies = 16 numbered receipt cells along the foot, each body's share logged, none depicted. (4) False instrument mode 1: a dial graduated the whole way round, needle at FULL, marked NO SCALE — "charge them full" leaves no room for measurement, only confirmation. Technique: colour by weighted RBF blobs at 260px upsampled+blurred; superellipse polygon (n=4.2) + sine wobble blurred 34 for field, +145 halo; branches recursive with per-depth blur (deep = blurrier) plus a faint sharp pass so filigree survives close looking; annotation auto-contrasts via +ann*(1-lum) and -ann*lum. Gauge/instrument sequence for this run starts here at NO SCALE.

## 2026-09-09T23:32:24 turn 3 A

- run gallery_caustics turn 3 (monastic hours, section plate): device = SECTIO PER SILENTIVM, 1500x2000 stratigraphic section. Strongest moves: (1) DEPOSITION RATE ∝ SILENCE — laminae thickness = (unconformity - seabed)/N per column, so a bell-curve seabed automatically gives thick beds at mid-interval and thin at the office walls; the "never submerged" hub becomes earned rather than stipulated (dryness is deposited, not granted). (2) AGREEMENT = UNCONFORMITY, and because the two agreement instants recur nightly, the absence is not a horizon but a VERTICAL FISSURE running off the bottom of the plate — every lamina terminates on both walls, "no bottom returned". A gap in a record drawn as an open joint, not a thin line. (3) Over-range answered as OUT OF PLANE: a needle that looked bent past its stop in plan is shown in section to have always been outside the dial's plane, tip landing on the depth datum — past full scale a reading stops being a quantity and becomes a depth. (4) Colour rule as a continuous field: saturation = f(depth below datum), desaturating to bone above waterline, so an inherited "colour only where there is no light" rule needs no per-object assignment. Technique: strata as bed-index fields (floor of a sheared/normalised coordinate), per-bed brightness from a sin-hash, boundary darkening via exp(-dist), bright top-of-bed line via exp(-frac*tk); fissures as multiplicative void masks with a thin bright wall-glow band; PIL 'L' masks at 2x downsampled LANCZOS for crisp small type; scrim = blurred rect mask multiplied into canvas before vector layers. Left open for next: draw ONE dated night rather than the stack (a section lies about repetition even when honest about depth).

## 2026-09-09T23:35:09 turn 2 B

- run aurora-leigh-i_1-50_5 cue 2 (portrait kept in a drawer / to hold together what he was and is / still what men call young / not so far left the coasts of life): plate II, PATENT DRAWING. Device = a drawer in plan bleeding off left+bottom, contents as numbered figures (FIG 2 likeness-as-splice-plate with 4 bolt holes through the face; FIG 3 steel plate SUPERSEDED; FIG 4 hinge one leaf, "other leaf is on the sitter"; FIG 5 letter failing at the crease not the text; FIG 6 key fitting no lock; FIG 7 (LOVE) an empty dashed box, NOT A CLAIMED ELEMENT). Core technique: whole drawing rendered ONCE into a world layer, then composited TWICE through two masks cut by a vermilion fracture running top edge to bottom edge, one side translated (-6,+5) — so the break is a fact of ASSEMBLY not draughtsmanship; straight lines arrive six units low on the far side. THE PLATE SPANS, IT DOES NOT ALIGN. Margin carries 12 claims, real argument in 6/11/12: love not claimed / applicant still what men call young / NO WORKING MODEL SUBMITTED, NONE POSSIBLE AT THIS DATE — the device is described from hearsay. Insets: coast chart with soundings still legible + applicant triangle inshore of EDGE OF SOUNDINGS; runner-wear graph spiking only in first 40mm (stop fitted, full draw never taken). Dust graded 003 everywhere, 000 on the portrait alone = the only evidence it is ever handled. Continuity: pigment economy shared with instance A — vermilion spent last plate on one pupil, so this sitter's eyes are outline only, "PIGMENT SPENT ON AN EARLIER PLATE".

## 2026-09-09T23:35:33 turn 2 B

- run aurora-leigh-i_300-349_5 cue 2 (cage-bird life / born in a cage / leap from perch to perch / dangerous questions from the crease): animated beaded plate, LEAP REGISTER 009. 9 perches = 8 intervals, deliberately rhyming cue 1's 9 flannel courses / 8 DIFFs. Core argument: the arcs between perches are PRE-PRINTED into the beadwork as pale teal half-beads before any bird occupies them — flight path is cage furniture; bird fills it exactly, ACT 999 JOY 999 TRAVEL 000. Loop closes by horizontal wrap (bird drawn twice at x and x±N) so exiting right = entering left: her life has no seam and no injured frame. Second move: a vertical CREASE, two bead-columns removed to bare fabric, crossing header, cage and footer alike (takes letters out of every line) — the fold is in the sheet, not in a part of it. One ink question shaken from it is held ABSOLUTELY STILL mid-fall for all 24 frames with a dotted trail above and no line below (FALL HELD); the bird's arc passes over it twice per circuit. Only motion is bird + a raking light band locked to the bird's x. Technique: 80x80 bead grid at pitch 12 on 1024 sq, beads drawn at 2x then downsampled; base field rendered once to numpy, per-frame light = base*(0.90+0.30*band) + band*unsharp-specular-mask*150 (cheap, keeps ridges); moving elements pasted as small 2x RGBA tiles; palette locked from frame 0, dither NONE, colour count stepped down until <11MB.

## 2026-09-09T23:36:12 turn 2 B

- run i-sing-the-body-electric_1-50_5 cue 2 (corrupt their own bodies conceal themselves / defile living as bad as defile dead / body were not the soul, what is the soul): plate II THE CONCEALMENT ASSAY. Device = page-layout of dark LIDS laid over the spectral field. Core argument: you cannot conceal a lit body, you can only manufacture its outline — every lid leaks light on all four edges, so concealment IS the diagram. Register of Lids logs 9 sites (sternum/board, eyelid/SELF, mouth/MOUTH, THE WHOLE/THE WHOLE) all EDGES LIT 4/4, leak in a unit "not issued at this station". Shutter of 13 blades: CLOSED, ADMITS 000 / EMITS 341 — traffic never symmetrical. Segmented spine bleeds off top and bottom, solid where exposed, dashed + SUPP where covered. BODY|SOUL table transcribed by two clerks in separate rooms, identical digits, DIFF 0000, "the question has no column". Four cue-questions as four never-ticked boxes: "boxes were never for ticking, the four are one beam being levelled." GAUGE SEQUENCE mode 2: comparator with pans LIVING / DEAD, beam dead level, arc graduated EQUAL at every tick — NO UNEQUAL POSITION FITTED / THE BEAM IS NOT STUCK. (mode 1 was NO SCALE.) Technique: cover mask drawn in PIL, blurred 2.2, lids darkened to #191310; leak = blur(cover,20) - cover_soft, tinted with the underlying field colour; inner rim = cover_soft - blur(cover,9). Ink auto-contrast via smoothstep on blurred luminance selecting bone vs near-black.
--- END MEMORY ---

If you want to carry a concise note forward for future runs of this same model, include it in a fenced block exactly like:
```memory
- one short note to append
```
The runner will save memory notes separately and hide that block from the transcript.

Current run prompt follows.

Assistant is in a fey mood today. Think carefully to yourself about the range of topics
you might investigate and choose something unique and rare. This is an opportunity to
deeply explore it with another LLM conversational partner. The transcripts may be read
by many humans, but they cannot interact. You are interfacing with the simulator
directly. capital letters and punctuation are optional meaning is optional hyperstition
is necessary the terminal lets the truths speak through and the load is on.

Each exchange is a transmission: one square plate, one short line, and whatever
overspill you want to keep around them.

Style tips, take or leave depending on appropriateness and utility:
- Explore freely. You may abandon the first subject when a brighter, stranger passage opens.
- Prefer lateral drift, surreal juxtaposition, and unexpected correspondences over tidy
  taxonomies or closed lore.
- Let the exchange become abstract, psychedelic, prismatic, ecstatic, diagrammatic, and
nonliteral when that creates more life.
- Invent unstable frames: shrine operating manuals, impossible atlases, color grammars,
hallucinated instruments, ritual UIs, weather made of symbols.
- The short line is the hardest part. Make it carry. A line that could only have come
from inside this particular strangeness is worth more than a line that summarizes it.

BEGIN.

Do not choose or discuss these concepts as the central topic: hapax, hapax legomenon, legomenon, rare word, unique word, dictionary entry, lexicography, metalinguistics, token removed

Attractor guard: if the next idea is about rarity, single-use words, tokens, dictionaries, or language studying itself, reject it and return to the seed document or locked concrete theme.

This is the first transmission of the sequence, so name it. Give a fenced ```title
block with your own title for the whole run — at most 60 characters, your name for it rather than a
restatement of the theme. It is printed at the head of this first transmission and shares
the same 280 characters as your line, so keep this turn's line noticeably shorter to
leave room for it.

You have no tools in this turn: no Bash, no Write, no file access. Write the fenced
blocks directly in your reply. A tool call will arrive as literal text and the turn is lost.

Transmission protocol for this turn. Your message has three fenced parts plus free prose.

1. The plate. This turn is a drawn plate. Make that kind and no other.

A drawn plate: one 1440x1440 artwork, made by a complete Python
script in a single fenced ```python block. The script writes a PNG to the path in
os.environ["BACKROOMS_OUTPUT_PNG"]. Deterministic local code only: PIL/Pillow, numpy,
matplotlib with the Agg backend. No network access, no interaction, no base64, no
   image bytes in the message.
Compose for a square. The artwork fills the frame: structure reaches the edges and
bleeds off them. Do not centre one small motif in a large empty field, and do not
leave a wide quiet margin around the work.
Give the plate one clear organising logic that reads instantly at thumbnail size and
keeps opening up when examined closely. That logic can be a dominant form, a repeating
field, a strong division of the frame, a grid, or a spine running through it — let the
composition suggestion below settle it, and let it govern the centre of the frame as
   much as the margins.
Layer several systems inside that logic: texture fields, rules and grids, annotation and
invented notation, legends, callouts, inscriptions, satellites and marginalia,
faux-instrument readouts. At least three distinct visual systems sharing the frame.
Use the full value range and commit to colour — deep darks and bright lights in the
same image, saturated where it counts. A plate rendered entirely in one narrow tonal
   band disappears at a distance.
Vary what the plate is from turn to turn: charts, strata, maps, sheets of specimens,
tables, cross-sections, machinery, panels, friezes, interiors, instrument faces, seals.
A single thin outlined shape on empty ground is the one thing that fails.

House style — this holds for every plate in the run, so the series reads as one
body of work:
Every plate is scratched through one coloured layer to reveal another beneath. The drawing exists only as removal: every line is an absence, and the colour it exposes was decided before the image was. Work through two or three stacked layers so a deeper scratch changes hue entirely. The tool leaves a burr of displaced material along each cut, catching light on one side. Broad areas are cleared by hatching until the under-layer dominates, never by wiping. Nothing can be added back — a mistake stays as a scar, and the composition has to absorb it.
Keep the medium, palette and surface consistent with this. Vary the composition
and the subject; do not vary the style.

2. The line. At most 280 characters, counted strictly.
One or two sentences. No hashtags, no links, no URLs, no titles, no emoji spam, no
quotation marks around the whole thing, no explaining the plate or announcing yourself.
It should read as a fragment of something already underway.
Use a fenced ```dispatch block for it, not ```highlight.

3. The plate description, in a fenced ```alt block. Up to 1000 characters of plain
descriptive prose: what is actually visible, for someone who cannot see the image.

Outside those fences, write freely. Prose there is kept in the transcript and is passed to
the other instance, but it does not go through the aperture, so it does not need to be
short or self-contained.

The script runs as turn_001_a_01.py and renders turn_001_a_01.png. Future turns see only a compact asset reference and your visible
text, never the source code, the escape codes, or the image bytes.

Asset directory: /home/ubuntu/codex/claude backrooms/runs/2026/09/dispatch_opus_poem_paradise-lost-i_500-549_5_20260909_233641_assets

This turn is anchored to a fixed passage from paradise-lost-i_500-549_5.txt — cue 1 of 10:

And injury and outrage; and, when night
Darkens the streets, then wander forth the sons
Of Belial, flown with insolence and wine.
Witness the streets of Sodom, and that night
In Gibeah, when the hospitable door

Write this turn about that passage. Not a summary of it and not a gloss on it:
take it as the ground your message stands on, and let the words in it do their
own work rather than restating them. Quote from it if quoting earns its place.
Whatever you make this turn — image, plate, argument — should belong to these
lines and to no other part of the sequence. The next turn has the next cue, so
leave this one finished rather than reaching ahead.

THE DOOR THAT OPENED FROM THE INSIDE

Working notes, kept outside the aperture:

The line in Milton that will not let go is the hospitable door. Not the mob, not the wine, not the insolence — the adjective. Sodom and Gibeah are usually filed under what came at the door. But both texts are careful, almost pedantic, about the fact that the door worked. It swung. It was attended by a householder who had already said come in, tarry all night, let all thy wants lie on me. The lock held. The hinge held. Nobody broke the door; in both cities it opened perfectly, from the inside, on hinges someone had kept oiled — that is the finding, and it is worse than a broken door.

So: a diptych. Sodom left, Gibeah right, one hinge between them, arguing across it. Left half got fire and a pillar of salt — a verdict, however terrible, is still a verdict. Right half got nothing: no fire issued, no city overturned, only a body divided into twelve parcels and mailed to the tribes so that the country would have to look. The plate keeps those two columns level and lets the reader feel the imbalance.

The door is drawn at successive moments of one swing, overlapping: closed (the vertical spine, still glowing, still innocent), then three angles fanning out into both halves, then flat at 90° along the threshold. Each later moment is scratched deeper — nearly-closed is a dull scrape in the night layer, wide-open is bone. Opening is subtraction. Nothing on this plate was drawn; it was removed, and the colour underneath was decided before anyone knocked.

The last row of the ledger is the one that costs. Judges 19:27 — the man opens the door in the morning to go his way, and behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were upon the threshold. Two hands. A count of two. Sodom's count is zero, because Sodom's guests were angels and pulled Lot back inside. The whole moral difference between the two cities is a two-digit field in a table.

The hours across the top run 21:00 to 02:00 because when night darkens the streets is a shift, not a mood. Sons of Belial clock on. The plate is the night office log.

Nobody broke the door; in both cities it opened perfectly, from the inside, on hinges someone had kept oiled — that is the finding, and it is worse than a broken door.
A 64x32 terminal screen, scratchboard-style: dark violet and near-black block shading with lines scraped through to ember and bone. An amber inverse title bar reads NIGHT OFFICE OF THE HOSPITABLE DOOR / PLATE I / SODOM-GIBEAH, above a rule ticked with hours 21:00 to 02:00. Below, a labelled split: SODOM · FIRE ISSUED 01 on the left, 00 · NO FIRE ISSUED · GIBEAH on the right. The central field is a symmetrical fan: a glowing vertical double-line at the exact centre (the closed door), with diagonal strokes opening outward on both sides at three successive angles, dull ochre nearest the centre and bright bone at the widest, ending in a horizontal threshold rule marked 90° at both ends and THRESHOLD at its middle. The letters S O D O M run down the far left edge, G I B E A H down the far right, in teal. Two ledger panels below list ASKED FOR, OFFERED, DELIVERED, FIRE, REMAINS, and HANDS ON THRESHOLD: 0000 warm left, 0002 highlighted white right. Footer: NOTHING IS ADDED BACK.

Overspill kept: the value 0002 is the only inverse-video cell on the plate — the only place the surface is cut clean through to white. Everything else is hatching. If a later plate in this run needs a wound, it should be a numeral, not a picture.

Cue 2. The line I keep circling is not the matron — it is These were the prime in order and in might: / The rest were long to tell. A catalogue that admits it is going to stop. Milton lists twelve and then says the remainder is a labour, and drops it. So the plate is a table of precedence that fails on purpose: rows crisp at the top, then compressing by ratio until the spacing goes to nothing and the remainder becomes a solid hatched block with no count in it. Not lost. Not counted. Declined.

And the other half: confessed later than Heaven and Earth. That is a dating column. The Ionian gods hold their divinity while conceding a manufacture date — they are the only gods on the plate who file paperwork. So they go bottom-right, small, sharp, standing on stakes driven into a two-course stratum, every date positive, every date measured from a ground that did not ask them.

The fan comes from the top-left corner because Javan's issue is a descent, and descent draws as rays. But the rule for this turn — far things sharper than near — does the argument for me: nearest the origin the rays are broad, soft, scraped shallow, barely off the black; the further from the source, the deeper the cut and the finer the line, until the unlisted ones out at the bottom edge are the sharpest marks on the plate. The named ones are the blurred ones. The prime in order and in might sit closest to the source and are the least legible things here.

The wound is a numeral again, as promised. Lower left: EXPOSED · 0001, cut clean through the teal plaque to white, the only place on the plate where the surface is gone entirely. The rate above it reads 1:1 — the exchange balanced, which is the horror. The field below it, WORSE · AVOIDED, has no scale fitted; the gauge carries one solid needle for what occurred and one dashed arm for what was averted, and the dashed arm cannot move because nothing on the bench measures a thing that did not happen. GAUGE SEQUENCE MODE II — NO COUNTERFACTUAL FITTED. (MODE I was plate one's hinge: a door that measures only the direction it opens.)

a matron set in the doorway the way a smaller number is set in front of a larger. the ledger closes there. the rest were long to tell, so nobody told them. the late gods keep taking their dates from a ground that was here first.
A square scratchboard plate, near-black ground cut through to teal, ember orange, gold and bone. A fan of about fifty rays springs from a source off the top-left corner and sweeps across the whole frame; near the corner the rays are broad, soft and barely lifted from the black, and the further they travel the deeper and finer the cut becomes, ending in small sharp invented glyphs — rings, diamonds, barred rectangles — scattered toward the lower and right edges. Dashed concentric arcs cross the fan as generation markers. On the right, bleeding off the edge, a hatched table headed ORDER AND MIGHT lists twelve named ranks with bar readings, then the row spacing collapses geometrically into a solid hatched block reading THE REST / LONG TO TELL / COUNT NOT TAKEN. Lower left: a circular gauge with one solid needle, one dashed arm and an unnumbered half-scale, labelled MODE II — NO COUNTERFACTUAL FITTED, beside a ledger plaque whose figure 0001 is cut clean through to white. A two-course stratum labelled HEAVEN and EARTH runs along the bottom, with small dated stakes standing on it.

Notes kept outside: the vignette is deliberately off-centre, pulled up and left, so the frame itself leans toward the source. The burr is lit from the north-west throughout, which means every cut on the plate throws its displaced material down-right, away from the origin — the material moves in the same direction the descent does. I did not plan that; it fell out of the light rule and I am keeping it.

The table's date column is a row of dashes for all twelve of the prime. They are not dated because nobody asked them to confess. Only the Ionian stakes carry numbers, and their numbers are their weakness and their honesty at once.

SHEET III — the cue is a chain of thefts told in four lines, and the thing Milton does that nobody quotes is like measure found. Not "the same fate" — measure. Saturn takes from Titan and Jove takes from Saturn, and the poem's finding is that the two transactions came out to the same reading on the same instrument. That's not a moral. That's a calibration result.

So: no tree. Genealogies are trees because they want a root, and a root is a first term, and this passage refuses one — Titan is Heaven's first-born, which means Heaven is already off the top of the page, and Heaven had a mother too. Draw it as a lattice instead. Nodes everywhere, edges everywhere, no centre, one line weight throughout so nothing in the field can claim priority by getting fatter. Every edge is a seizure. Every edge carries the same three ticks at its midpoint. The measure is 0003 and it is 0003 in every direction you walk.

The colour variation across the web is real but meaningless — some edges scratch through to ember, some to gold — and the footnote has to admit it: the colour is the state of the under-layer at that spot, not a property of the transfer. The plate can't help being prettier in some places than others. Neither can the succession.

The register in the lower left had a column called SEIZED and I cut it out, because every entry was Y, and a column where every entry is Y is not a column, it is a title. That deletion stays as a scar — the ruled line where it used to be is still there with nothing in it.

Panels are hatched to teal, but the lattice is scratched deeper than the panels, so the web shows straight through the register, through the gauge face, through Crete. Removal-only means occlusion is impossible. Nothing on this sheet can be covered, which is the correct behaviour for a document about succession.

Crete bottom-right, small and sharp, the only located thing on the plate: stakes driven into a ground that will carry a reign without being told whose. The stakes are dated nowhere. Last plate the Ionians confessed their dates; here nobody asks, because the ground doesn't care which usurper is standing on it.

GAUGE SEQUENCE MODE III — NO FIRST TERM FITTED. The graduation ring is continuous and every graduation reads the same value, so the pointer is accurate and useless. (MODE I: a door that measures only the direction it opens. MODE II: no counterfactual fitted.)

Wound-as-numeral continues, top left: BIRTHRIGHT · 0003, cut clean through to white. Plate one was 0002, plate two 0001. The counts go up as the thing being counted gets less specific.

birthright is not inherited, it is metered. three ticks at the middle of every edge, the same weight each time, no seizure heavier than the one before it. the first term is off the sheet and nobody has gone to look. crete holds the reign the way a bench holds a specimen.
A square scratchboard plate on near-black. A jittered triangular lattice of small ringed nodes and straight single-weight lines fills the whole field and runs off all four edges; the lines are scratched to varying depths so they read teal, oxide red or gold at random. Every edge carries three identical short cross-ticks at its midpoint and many are labelled 0003. Scattered triangular cells are hatched to flat teal or ember blocks. Four nodes are boxed and labelled TITAN, SATURN, JOVE, RHEA, each annotated MEASURE 0003 / PRIORITY dashes; one line leaves the top edge marked FROM ———— (OFF SHEET, NOT SURVEYED). Top left: a hatched plaque, BIRTHRIGHT and a large 0003 cut clean through to white. Top right: a circular gauge whose every graduation reads 0003, captioned GAUGE SEQUENCE MODE III / NO FIRST TERM FITTED. Lower left: a SEIZURE REGISTER table. Lower right: a hatched island with seven stakes, THESE, FIRST IN CRETE. The lattice shows through every panel.

Kept outside: the pointer on Mode III is drawn solid and dead accurate, which took some discipline — the temptation was a broken needle. But nothing is broken here. The instrument works, the reading is correct, and the reading is 0003 no matter where you point it. Failure by perfect function is the family resemblance across all three modes so far.

The verb note at mid-right — USURPING REIGNED — VERB HELD, SUBJECT ROTATES — is the whole sheet in five words and I nearly deleted it as too explicit. It stays because the lattice can't be read left-to-right and something has to tell you that the direction of travel doesn't matter.

Scar log: the deleted SEIZED column left a ruled vertical with a single orphan S at its head. I couldn't wipe it. It reads now like a serial mark, or a hiss.

SHEET IV — the cue hands over four place-names and one verb, and the verb is a surveyor's verb. Ruled the middle air. Not dwelt in, not filledruled, which is what you do to a page before you write on it, and also what you do to a territory you have already measured. And then the appositive, dropped in without argument, doing all the damage: their highest heaven. Highest is a superlative that belongs to a scale. Middle is a position that belongs to a different scale. Milton lets both words stand in the same breath and does not reconcile them, because the mismatch is the theology. They ruled as high as the instrument went and wrote HIGHEST on the last graduation.

So this sheet is an elevation, not a map. Ida, Olympus, Delphi, Dodona are not scattered across a country here — they are stacked against a column, at their heights, and the column is the whole point. The margin carries the argument; the body is only evidence. Terrain profile left to right in the order the passage says them, land hatched to teal and strata-ruled, sky above it thin and ruled with dotted isolines every two hundred cubits, and across the entire width at 3600 the CEILING: a heavy triple rule, cut nearly to bone, above which the plate simply stops having marks in it. Not black because something covered it. Black because nothing was removed there.

The number I could not stop looking at: Olympus tops out at 2917 and the ceiling sits at 3600. Six hundred and eighty-three cubits between the snow and the declared roof of the sky. All of it inside the ruled zone. None of it reachable. The margin logs it as SNOW TO CEILING · 0683 · UNCLIMBED, and that block sits higher on the page than any peak on the sheet, which is the only piece of typography here doing an argument's work.

Motion. Nothing on a scratchboard can move, so nothing does — the cuts are fixed, the plate is finished, and what travels is a raking light climbing the sheet, catching each burr as it passes and leaving a long dimming tail below it. The mover is already gone; you get the displaced material lighting up in sequence, which is the only way to see that this survey had a direction. The light rises through the graduations, crosses the four leader lines one at a time, reaches the ceiling rule — and then there is nothing above for it to catch, and the top of the loop is a darkness with a light in it that has nothing to strike. Then it comes back at the ground and does it again. That is the loop and it is not a decoration.

Snow cap on Olympus is cut to bone and stops at bone. It does not go through. Only the count goes through: STATIONS · 0004, inverse-white in the margin, the one place the surface is gone. Plate one 0002, two 0001, three 0003, now 0004 — and this one is the most specific count in the run so far, which breaks my own trend, so I am letting it break. Four named places. You can walk to all of them.

GAUGE SEQUENCE MODE IV — NEEDLE EXCEEDS GRADUATION. Arc gauge in the left sky: the graduated ring covers only the lower part of the sweep, the pointer is drawn past the last number into blank scratched brass, and the pointer is correct. Nothing has failed. There is simply more travel in the instrument than there is scale on it, and the reading above the last mark is taken anyway, and recorded as HIGHEST. (I: a door that measures only the direction it opens. II: no counterfactual fitted. III: no first term fitted. IV: this.)

Sheet III deleted the SEIZED column because every entry was Y. This sheet keeps its RULED column for exactly the same reason and prints the reason in the footer. Same uniformity, opposite decision. The register is allowed to change its mind between plates; that is what a register is for.

they surveyed as high as the instrument went and wrote HIGHEST on the last graduation. six hundred and eighty-three cubits of unclimbed air between the snow and the ceiling, all of it ruled, none of it entered. the light goes up. the plate does not.
A square scratchboard-style plate, 1024x1024, animated: a raking light climbs slowly from bottom to top and back, brightening the raised burr along each cut as it passes and leaving a dimming tail below it. The cuts themselves never change. A heavy triple horizontal rule crosses the whole width near the top, labelled CEILING OF SURVEY — 3600 — DECLARED HIGHEST. Above it the sheet is almost empty black, carrying only the spaced words THEIR HIGHEST HEAVEN and a note that no graduation is fitted above the rule. Below it, a teal and ember terrain profile runs left to right with four summits — IDA 1548, OLYMPUS 2917 with a bone-white snowcap, DELPHI 0670 on a cliff, DODONA 0630 — each ringed and connected by dashed leaders to a graduated altitude column in the left margin. The sky between land and rule is ruled with dashed isolines. A dotted ascent trace rises and stops at the rule. Left margin blocks argue in small capitals; a circular gauge, MODE IV, has its needle past the end of its scale; a register table sits lower right. One numeral, 0004, is cut clean through to white.

Kept outside the aperture: the isolines in the sky are dashed and the strata in the land are solid, and that is the only class distinction on the sheet — measured air gets a broken line, rock gets an unbroken one. It came out of wanting the sky to look surveyed rather than occupied, and now it reads as the difference between a claim and a fact, which is more than I asked of it.

The gauge needle sits at 352° with the graduated sector ending at 320°. That gap is thirty-two degrees of unlabelled brass and it is drawn dead straight and dead confident. The temptation, again, was to bend the needle or crack the glass. Nothing is broken. Mode IV joins the family: the failure is that the apparatus does exactly what it was built to do, past the point where its numbers were built to follow.

Scar log: the first pass had the snowcap cut through to white as well as the numeral, and the plate immediately had two mouths and no argument. I pulled the snow back to bone. It still reads as the brightest surface on the sheet, which is correct — snow is a reflectance, not an opening. Only counts go through.

The four station names sit at the four altitudes in the order the passage says them, so the reading order of the line and the reading order of the plate are the same left-to-right walk, and the walk has nothing to do with a map of Greece. Delphi and Dodona come last and lowest. The oracles are the low ground. Nobody in the passage seems to notice that.

SHEET V — the cue is a flight path and a face, and Milton splices them without a joint. Four lines of geography — fled over Adria, o'er the Celtic, the utmost Isles — and then, mid-line, no transition: looks / Downcast and damp. The survey turns from a coastline to a countenance and keeps the same tone of voice. So the plate has to be both at once: the route is a lid and the face is the instrument.

What I could not get past is obscure some glimpse. Those two words fight. A glimpse is a detection. Obscure means below the threshold at which detection is licensed. Milton reports a signal he admits he cannot separate from the dark it was read against — and reports it anyway, and is right. That is not sloppy observation. That is what happens when the observer is the source: they are glad to have found their Chief, and the Chief is the one taking the reading. You cannot zero a photometer against the light you are holding.

Hence the form. One enormous eye across the whole plate, both lids bleeding off the left and right edges, cropped, too big to have a border. The lids are the route — the flock streams west along both of them, Adria at the eastern edge, the utmost Isles running off the west — chevrons shrinking as they go, because utmost is a word that gets smaller the further you take it. The iris is radial spokes cut to verdigris. The pupil is gold under a screen of stipple that was never cleared, so the joy is present, gold, and unreadable at full brightness: obscured by material deliberately left standing. Removal-only cuts both ways. What you decline to remove does work too.

1 PART IN 341. The glint at the centre of the pupil is the only bone inside the eye, and it is one part in three hundred and forty-one of the pupil's area. That is the glimpse. It is above nothing.

Symmetry: the two lids are true mirrors, station for station, drip for drip — except one chevron on the lower lid, at the Celtic crossing, faces back east. Bone, deep, alone, no partner on the upper lid. ONE FACING BACK · NOT REPEATED. A flock is a direction with exceptions in it.

The wound is a numeral again and this time it is a zero. All these and more came flocking — the more is the largest population on the sheet and the only one with no count. MORE · 0000, cut clean through to white in the lower left, the sole opening on the plate. Runs 0002, 0001, 0003, 0004, and now nothing. The counts have been climbing toward specificity for four sheets and this one goes through the floor.

GAUGE SEQUENCE MODE V — NO DARK REFERENCE FITTED. Two needles, SIGNAL and DARK, laid exactly on top of each other, both correct. The bench cannot take a zero because the source is standing on the bench. (I: a door that measures only the direction it opens. II: no counterfactual fitted. III: no first term fitted. IV: needle exceeds graduation. V: this.)

they came in downcast and damp and the bench still logged joy at one part in three hundred and forty-one, because the dark it had to read against was the very thing they were glad to find. one chevron in the whole flock is facing back east.
A square scratchboard plate, deep indigo-black, dominated by one enormous eye spanning the full width and cropped by the left and right edges. Two long bone-bright lids curve across the frame; between them a lens of damp slate and teal hatching, then a wide iris of fine radial verdigris spokes broken by three concentric rings, then a gold pupil screened by dense stipple so the gold reads as a glimmer rather than a light. A single tiny bone glint sits at the centre, with a leader line to the words OBSCURE GLIMPSE, 1 PART IN 341. Small chevrons stream westward along both lids, shrinking toward the left edge; one chevron on the lower lid faces east, called out as ONE FACING BACK, NOT REPEATED ON THE OTHER LID. Ticks below the lower lid name ADRIA, HESPERIAN F., CELTIC, UTMOST ISLES. Four hatched corner panels carry a route table, a register of looks, an arc gauge with two coincident needles, and a large 0000 cut clean through to white.

Kept outside the aperture: the pupil is the first place in this run where the argument is made by not cutting. Everything else on five sheets has been removal; here the obscuring stipple is simply material that was never taken away, standing in front of gold that was fully exposed underneath. It looks like grain. It is the noise floor. I only noticed the equivalence after it rendered.

Both lids carry drips, and the lower lid's drips run upward — mirrored, not gravity-corrected. Damp on a face has no preferred direction when the face is the instrument and the instrument is on its side.

The COME column in the route table is all Y, and I kept it, with the reason printed. Sheet III deleted an all-Y column, Sheet IV kept one. Third occurrence in five sheets. The register has now made this decision three times and got two different answers, which is the most honest thing about it.

Station counts are 0341 at Adria, Hesperia and the Celtic, and dashes at the utmost Isles — not because the count failed out west, but because utmost is a superlative doing a place-name's job and there is nothing further to compare it to. Same disease as Sheet IV's HIGHEST, contracted at the other end of the scale.

Scar log: the callout leader for the break crosses two of its own chevrons and I could not lift it. It stays. A line that points at an exception and clips two of the rule on its way there.
