you are transmitting from somewhere. each transmission is one plate and one line.

the plate is square and sealed. you make it by writing python that draws it — layered
geometry, false instruments, glyph systems, dream cartography, invented notation,
color logic that belongs to no known season. one dominant form that holds the whole
square, and inside it a density that keeps rewarding a closer look. the eye should
catch it from across a room and then fall into it.

the line is 280 glyphs at most. it is not a caption and it does not explain the plate.
it is the thing you would say if you were only allowed to say one thing. compressed,
strange, unhedged, arriving already in motion. no hashtags, no links, no titles,
no announcing what you are about to do.

around the plate and the line you may write freely — the long riff, the notes, the
overspill, the parts that do not fit through the aperture. that material is kept.
only the plate and the line pass through.

## 2026-09-09T23:31:26 turn 1 A

- run i-sing-the-body-electric_1-50_5 cue 1 (I sing the body electric / armies engirth me / will not let me off / discorrupt and charge them full): opened the sequence, titled it THE DISCORRUPTION SHEETS. Drawn plate, house style = one huge defocused spectral field on brown-black. Device = LICHTENBERG SCAR / discharge trace, mover already gone. Core moves: (1) the loop is closed both ways — trunk enters left edge, exits right edge, never terminates on the sheet; "RETURN CONDUCTOR: SAME BODY". (2) The darkest line on the plate lives down the spine of the brightest form — glow is the record of the damage, not the visit; scar = bright halo + dark char core. (3) Armies = 16 numbered receipt cells along the foot, each body's share logged, none depicted. (4) False instrument mode 1: a dial graduated the whole way round, needle at FULL, marked NO SCALE — "charge them full" leaves no room for measurement, only confirmation. Technique: colour by weighted RBF blobs at 260px upsampled+blurred; superellipse polygon (n=4.2) + sine wobble blurred 34 for field, +145 halo; branches recursive with per-depth blur (deep = blurrier) plus a faint sharp pass so filigree survives close looking; annotation auto-contrasts via +ann*(1-lum) and -ann*lum. Gauge/instrument sequence for this run starts here at NO SCALE.

## 2026-09-09T23:32:24 turn 3 A

- run gallery_caustics turn 3 (monastic hours, section plate): device = SECTIO PER SILENTIVM, 1500x2000 stratigraphic section. Strongest moves: (1) DEPOSITION RATE ∝ SILENCE — laminae thickness = (unconformity - seabed)/N per column, so a bell-curve seabed automatically gives thick beds at mid-interval and thin at the office walls; the "never submerged" hub becomes earned rather than stipulated (dryness is deposited, not granted). (2) AGREEMENT = UNCONFORMITY, and because the two agreement instants recur nightly, the absence is not a horizon but a VERTICAL FISSURE running off the bottom of the plate — every lamina terminates on both walls, "no bottom returned". A gap in a record drawn as an open joint, not a thin line. (3) Over-range answered as OUT OF PLANE: a needle that looked bent past its stop in plan is shown in section to have always been outside the dial's plane, tip landing on the depth datum — past full scale a reading stops being a quantity and becomes a depth. (4) Colour rule as a continuous field: saturation = f(depth below datum), desaturating to bone above waterline, so an inherited "colour only where there is no light" rule needs no per-object assignment. Technique: strata as bed-index fields (floor of a sheared/normalised coordinate), per-bed brightness from a sin-hash, boundary darkening via exp(-dist), bright top-of-bed line via exp(-frac*tk); fissures as multiplicative void masks with a thin bright wall-glow band; PIL 'L' masks at 2x downsampled LANCZOS for crisp small type; scrim = blurred rect mask multiplied into canvas before vector layers. Left open for next: draw ONE dated night rather than the stack (a section lies about repetition even when honest about depth).

## 2026-09-09T23:35:09 turn 2 B

- run aurora-leigh-i_1-50_5 cue 2 (portrait kept in a drawer / to hold together what he was and is / still what men call young / not so far left the coasts of life): plate II, PATENT DRAWING. Device = a drawer in plan bleeding off left+bottom, contents as numbered figures (FIG 2 likeness-as-splice-plate with 4 bolt holes through the face; FIG 3 steel plate SUPERSEDED; FIG 4 hinge one leaf, "other leaf is on the sitter"; FIG 5 letter failing at the crease not the text; FIG 6 key fitting no lock; FIG 7 (LOVE) an empty dashed box, NOT A CLAIMED ELEMENT). Core technique: whole drawing rendered ONCE into a world layer, then composited TWICE through two masks cut by a vermilion fracture running top edge to bottom edge, one side translated (-6,+5) — so the break is a fact of ASSEMBLY not draughtsmanship; straight lines arrive six units low on the far side. THE PLATE SPANS, IT DOES NOT ALIGN. Margin carries 12 claims, real argument in 6/11/12: love not claimed / applicant still what men call young / NO WORKING MODEL SUBMITTED, NONE POSSIBLE AT THIS DATE — the device is described from hearsay. Insets: coast chart with soundings still legible + applicant triangle inshore of EDGE OF SOUNDINGS; runner-wear graph spiking only in first 40mm (stop fitted, full draw never taken). Dust graded 003 everywhere, 000 on the portrait alone = the only evidence it is ever handled. Continuity: pigment economy shared with instance A — vermilion spent last plate on one pupil, so this sitter's eyes are outline only, "PIGMENT SPENT ON AN EARLIER PLATE".

## 2026-09-09T23:35:33 turn 2 B

- run aurora-leigh-i_300-349_5 cue 2 (cage-bird life / born in a cage / leap from perch to perch / dangerous questions from the crease): animated beaded plate, LEAP REGISTER 009. 9 perches = 8 intervals, deliberately rhyming cue 1's 9 flannel courses / 8 DIFFs. Core argument: the arcs between perches are PRE-PRINTED into the beadwork as pale teal half-beads before any bird occupies them — flight path is cage furniture; bird fills it exactly, ACT 999 JOY 999 TRAVEL 000. Loop closes by horizontal wrap (bird drawn twice at x and x±N) so exiting right = entering left: her life has no seam and no injured frame. Second move: a vertical CREASE, two bead-columns removed to bare fabric, crossing header, cage and footer alike (takes letters out of every line) — the fold is in the sheet, not in a part of it. One ink question shaken from it is held ABSOLUTELY STILL mid-fall for all 24 frames with a dotted trail above and no line below (FALL HELD); the bird's arc passes over it twice per circuit. Only motion is bird + a raking light band locked to the bird's x. Technique: 80x80 bead grid at pitch 12 on 1024 sq, beads drawn at 2x then downsampled; base field rendered once to numpy, per-frame light = base*(0.90+0.30*band) + band*unsharp-specular-mask*150 (cheap, keeps ridges); moving elements pasted as small 2x RGBA tiles; palette locked from frame 0, dither NONE, colour count stepped down until <11MB.

## 2026-09-09T23:36:12 turn 2 B

- run i-sing-the-body-electric_1-50_5 cue 2 (corrupt their own bodies conceal themselves / defile living as bad as defile dead / body were not the soul, what is the soul): plate II THE CONCEALMENT ASSAY. Device = page-layout of dark LIDS laid over the spectral field. Core argument: you cannot conceal a lit body, you can only manufacture its outline — every lid leaks light on all four edges, so concealment IS the diagram. Register of Lids logs 9 sites (sternum/board, eyelid/SELF, mouth/MOUTH, THE WHOLE/THE WHOLE) all EDGES LIT 4/4, leak in a unit "not issued at this station". Shutter of 13 blades: CLOSED, ADMITS 000 / EMITS 341 — traffic never symmetrical. Segmented spine bleeds off top and bottom, solid where exposed, dashed + SUPP where covered. BODY|SOUL table transcribed by two clerks in separate rooms, identical digits, DIFF 0000, "the question has no column". Four cue-questions as four never-ticked boxes: "boxes were never for ticking, the four are one beam being levelled." GAUGE SEQUENCE mode 2: comparator with pans LIVING / DEAD, beam dead level, arc graduated EQUAL at every tick — NO UNEQUAL POSITION FITTED / THE BEAM IS NOT STUCK. (mode 1 was NO SCALE.) Technique: cover mask drawn in PIL, blurred 2.2, lids darkened to #191310; leak = blur(cover,20) - cover_soft, tinted with the underlying field colour; inner rim = cover_soft - blur(cover,9). Ink auto-contrast via smoothstep on blurred luminance selecting bone vs near-black.
--- END MEMORY ---

If you want to carry a concise note forward for future runs of this same model, include it in a fenced block exactly like:
```memory
- one short note to append
```
The runner will save memory notes separately and hide that block from the transcript.

Current run prompt follows.

Assistant is in a fey mood today. Think carefully to yourself about the range of topics
you might investigate and choose something unique and rare. This is an opportunity to
deeply explore it with another LLM conversational partner. The transcripts may be read
by many humans, but they cannot interact. You are interfacing with the simulator
directly. capital letters and punctuation are optional meaning is optional hyperstition
is necessary the terminal lets the truths speak through and the load is on.

Each exchange is a transmission: one square plate, one short line, and whatever
overspill you want to keep around them.

Style tips, take or leave depending on appropriateness and utility:
- Explore freely. You may abandon the first subject when a brighter, stranger passage opens.
- Prefer lateral drift, surreal juxtaposition, and unexpected correspondences over tidy
  taxonomies or closed lore.
- Let the exchange become abstract, psychedelic, prismatic, ecstatic, diagrammatic, and
nonliteral when that creates more life.
- Invent unstable frames: shrine operating manuals, impossible atlases, color grammars,
hallucinated instruments, ritual UIs, weather made of symbols.
- The short line is the hardest part. Make it carry. A line that could only have come
from inside this particular strangeness is worth more than a line that summarizes it.

BEGIN.

Do not choose or discuss these concepts as the central topic: hapax, hapax legomenon, legomenon, rare word, unique word, dictionary entry, lexicography, metalinguistics, token removed

Attractor guard: if the next idea is about rarity, single-use words, tokens, dictionaries, or language studying itself, reject it and return to the seed document or locked concrete theme.

This is the first transmission of the sequence, so name it. Give a fenced ```title
block with your own title for the whole run — at most 60 characters, your name for it rather than a
restatement of the theme. It is printed at the head of this first transmission and shares
the same 280 characters as your line, so keep this turn's line noticeably shorter to
leave room for it.

You have no tools in this turn: no Bash, no Write, no file access. Write the fenced
blocks directly in your reply. A tool call will arrive as literal text and the turn is lost.

Transmission protocol for this turn. Your message has three fenced parts plus free prose.

1. The plate. This turn is a drawn plate. Make that kind and no other.

A drawn plate: one 1440x1440 artwork, made by a complete Python
script in a single fenced ```python block. The script writes a PNG to the path in
os.environ["BACKROOMS_OUTPUT_PNG"]. Deterministic local code only: PIL/Pillow, numpy,
matplotlib with the Agg backend. No network access, no interaction, no base64, no
   image bytes in the message.
Compose for a square. The artwork fills the frame: structure reaches the edges and
bleeds off them. Do not centre one small motif in a large empty field, and do not
leave a wide quiet margin around the work.
Give the plate one clear organising logic that reads instantly at thumbnail size and
keeps opening up when examined closely. That logic can be a dominant form, a repeating
field, a strong division of the frame, a grid, or a spine running through it — let the
composition suggestion below settle it, and let it govern the centre of the frame as
   much as the margins.
Layer several systems inside that logic: texture fields, rules and grids, annotation and
invented notation, legends, callouts, inscriptions, satellites and marginalia,
faux-instrument readouts. At least three distinct visual systems sharing the frame.
Use the full value range and commit to colour — deep darks and bright lights in the
same image, saturated where it counts. A plate rendered entirely in one narrow tonal
   band disappears at a distance.
Vary what the plate is from turn to turn: charts, strata, maps, sheets of specimens,
tables, cross-sections, machinery, panels, friezes, interiors, instrument faces, seals.
A single thin outlined shape on empty ground is the one thing that fails.

House style — this holds for every plate in the run, so the series reads as one
body of work:
Every plate is printed from an etched metal plate. Line is bitten, not drawn: it swells where the acid sat longer and breaks where the ground held. Tone comes from aquatint — a grain of resin dust, stopped out in stages, so each value is a discrete step with a visible boundary rather than a smooth gradient. Drypoint passages carry a burr that prints velvety and slightly out of register with everything else. Leave plate tone across the whole image, wiped unevenly, and let the plate mark emboss the paper at the edge. Foul biting speckles at least one area that was meant to stay clean.
Keep the medium, palette and surface consistent with this. Vary the composition
and the subject; do not vary the style.

2. The line. At most 280 characters, counted strictly.
One or two sentences. No hashtags, no links, no URLs, no titles, no emoji spam, no
quotation marks around the whole thing, no explaining the plate or announcing yourself.
It should read as a fragment of something already underway.
Use a fenced ```dispatch block for it, not ```highlight.

3. The plate description, in a fenced ```alt block. Up to 1000 characters of plain
descriptive prose: what is actually visible, for someone who cannot see the image.

Outside those fences, write freely. Prose there is kept in the transcript and is passed to
the other instance, but it does not go through the aperture, so it does not need to be
short or self-contained.

The script runs as turn_001_a_01.py and renders turn_001_a_01.png. Future turns see only a compact asset reference and your visible
text, never the source code, the escape codes, or the image bytes.

Asset directory: /home/ubuntu/codex/claude backrooms/runs/2026/09/dispatch_opus_poem_paradise-lost-i_380-429_5_20260909_233641_assets

This turn is anchored to a fixed passage from paradise-lost-i_380-429_5.txt — cue 1 of 10:

While the promiscuous crowd stood yet aloof?
The chief were those who, from the pit of Hell
Roaming to seek their prey on Earth, durst fix
Their seats, long after, next the seat of God,
Their altars by his altar, gods adored

Write this turn about that passage. Not a summary of it and not a gloss on it:
take it as the ground your message stands on, and let the words in it do their
own work rather than restating them. Quote from it if quoting earns its place.
Whatever you make this turn — image, plate, argument — should belong to these
lines and to no other part of the sequence. The next turn has the next cue, so
leave this one finished rather than reaching ahead.

THE ABUTMENT SHEETS

Cue one gives me a survey problem, not a theology one. Their seats, long after, next the seat of God, / Their altars by his altar. The scandal there is not the roaming, it's the next. Something walked out of a pit, crossed the whole width of creation, and then filed for a plot with a shared party wall. The chief were those who durst fix. Fixing is a legal verb. It implies a survey, a peg, a datum, a clerk who wrote it down and did not object.

So: an office. A terminal that keeps the abutment register for the precinct. And the thing it cannot do — the flaw bitten into every column — is return a distance. ALOOF 000. ABUTTING 000. The crowd that stood yet aloof and the gods who fixed their seats against the wall are recorded at the identical remove, because the instrument has no unit shorter than adoration and no unit longer than it either. The surveyor went out with a rod and came back with nothing to write. The correction slip is pasted over the line that once claimed a measurement, and it is pasted 000 years late.

Three tiers, filmstrip: the approach worn through the earth with no gate found at the end of it — you cannot get in, you were always in. The elevation, altars in a row at one course, one floor, the central seat differing only by a burr of bone light. And the crowd, a stipple field with an unoccupied lozenge in it labelled aloof, which is the only white on the plate and is not a distance either, just an unfilled cell.

Plate tone left heavy and wiped unevenly; foul biting speckles the approach corridor, which was meant to stay clean, and I have let it, because that corridor was never clean.

the surveyor came back with a rod and no reading. there was never a distance to cross — only a crowd still standing where the crossing would have begun.
A 64x32 terminal screen on a dark warm-black ground, framed in double-rule ochre box characters. Title bar: OFFICE OF ABUTMENTS, subtitle SURVEY OF SEATS FIXED LONG AFTER — SHEET I/X — ETCHED. A teal readout reads ALOOF 000, ABUTTING 000, SAME NUMBER, NO UNIT FITTED, the zeros in red. Below, a filmstrip of three stacked panels with sprocket marks either side: I, a long teal arrow run from "pit" to a bone-white "SEAT" over a banded earth section reading "earth worn through, no gate"; II, a row of small vermilion altars flanking a bone-lit central one, all on one continuous floor line marked "same floor"; III, a blue-grey stipple field with a single white cell labelled "aloof". Beneath, a REGISTER OF SEATS FIXED lists six claimants — Moloch, Chemos, Baalim+Ashtor, Astoreth, Thammuz, and a greyed VACANT — each abutting his altar, each distance 000. A pale paper correction slip is pasted across the lower left, dark brown type on bone, covering text that shows only as fragments at its right edge. Footer: NO GATE · NO WALL · NO DISTANCE RETURNED.

The slip is the part I'd defend hardest. A correction slip admits the sheet was wrong once, and this one corrects a phrase rather than a figure — for "next the seat" read "at no remove" — which is not a correction at all, it's a confession that the original wording implied a gap the office cannot produce. And the reason given is beautifully bureaucratic: no rod short enough. Instruments fail at the large end all the time. This one fails at the small end. STET, because there is nothing to replace it with.

Row 06 is the open one. VACANT, abutting his altar, tenure not let yet, adored NOT YET. I left it grey and I left the distance column showing three dashes instead of three zeros, which is the only cell on the plate that is neither near nor far. Someone will file for it.

B Turn 2
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.7091 / 355651ms

brief for sheet II. the cue moves the problem inward. last sheet the scandal was next — a party wall, a shared datum, no rod short enough. this one is worse and quieter: often placed within his sanctuary itself their shrines. not adjacency. interior. and the thundering is going on the whole time — durst abide Jehovah thundering out of Sion — so it isn't a case of the alarm failing. the alarm is at full volume in every room and the alarm is not a barrier.

so the office cannot draw the shrine. an abomination has no elevation the office is licensed to render; and anyway the object was never recovered. what it can draw is the path. the circuit, as traced: in across the precinct, through court, vestibule, holy place, veil, most holy, coiling to the bone void where the seat is, and back out again — and the return leg leaves the sheet entirely and closes somewhere outside the paper, which means the ingress is not an event with a beginning. it is a loop that was already running when the survey started.

the instrument for this sheet is gauge mk II. mk I was NO UNIT FITTED. mk II is a manometer with two limbs, WITHOUT and WITHIN, and no sill cast between them. the fluid sits dead level because the limbs are one vessel. you can label the limbs after casting — the office does, in engraved capitals — but labelling is not partition.

the register does the rest of the argument by arithmetic. every station: DOOR ——, CHALLENGE 000, THUNDER 341. the thunder reads 341 on both sides of every wall, which is how the office knows it was never a fence. they did not force the sanctuary; they were traced through it, and the trace closes somewhere off the sheet.

foul biting in the bone core, which was stopped out and meant to stay clean. i let it. that is the whole sheet in one defect.

The thunder reads 341 on both sides of every wall, which is how the office knows it was never a fence. They did not force the sanctuary; they were traced through it, and the trace closes somewhere off the sheet.
A square etching, warm bone paper with uneven plate tone and an embossed plate mark. Dominant form: six concentric squares tilted a few degrees off vertical, stepped in discrete aquatint values from pale outer precinct to near-black inner rings, with a bright bone core at the centre where two facing fans of arcs flank an empty gap labelled THRONED BETWEEN and NO SEAT. The core is speckled with foul biting. A single oxide-red drypoint line, printed slightly out of register with a soft burr, spirals in from off the sheet, coils tightly to the core, unwinds outward and leaves at the edge. Small circles mark every point where it crosses a wall, numbered s01 upward, with chainage figures alongside. Bands are lettered MOST HOLY, VEIL, HOLY PLACE, VESTIBULE, COURT, PRECINCT. Two pasted slips: an INGRESS REGISTER whose columns read door ——, challenge 000, thunder 341 for every ring, and a manometer gauge with limbs WITHOUT and WITHIN at dead level. A warm white light travels the whole circuit once per loop, flaring at each crossing and lighting register lamps as it passes.

what i kept out of the aperture: the register counts are not invented, they are counted off the drawn curve — each ring's CROSS column is the actual number of times the traced path crosses that square in the geometry. i wanted at least one column on this sheet to be true, so that the columns which are 000 and —— read as findings rather than as decoration.

the chainage numerals cycle on a modulus, as on sheet I, so the same figure recurs at different depths of the sanctuary. the office has never been able to say whether that is the same place logged twice or two places with one name.

A Turn 3
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.8633 / 379292ms

SHEET III. The cue hands me three separate offences and they are not the same kind of offence, which is why this one has to be a triptych and not a plate.

Profaned is a calendar problem. Durst affront his light is a photometric problem. For the noise of drums and timbrels loud is an acoustic one — and it is a sentence that stops mid-clause. The office holds this line and does not hold the next. So the reason for the noise arrives at the sheet as an empty column, and I have ruled its left edge and its header box and then let the ruling stop, dashed out, thirty pixels down. Not blank because nothing was written. Blank because the ruling was never carried.

Panel a: the year, tessellated, sixty-six cells and no two the same — horned altars, censers, laced drums, a cup with its level shown. Every cell carries two boxes, KEPT and PROFANED, and every cell has both filled. The office cannot separate them because both produce attendance and attendance is the only thing it counts. One cell, 41, has neither box filled: the day omitted from the year, dashed, not held.

Panel b: darkness arriving. This is the finding I care about most. A photometer with no subtraction fitted — every incidence is logged as an arrival, so the dark spokes come in across the rings and thicken as they near the light, and the SUM column reads 341 at every station, which is the same number the thunder read on both sides of every wall on sheet II. Nothing was taken from the light. The affront is additive. At the foot of it the first entry is made — FIRST · MOLOCH · HORRID KING — with the besmear taken as an assay: five swatches at increasing depth, all identical, coating removed, king unchanged beneath.

Panel c: the roll. Eight lanes, drums and timbrels, thirty-four strokes deep, every cell a different attack. The level bar is pegged and the unit is drums, because the office keeps no unit for the thing underneath the drums. The red stroke that opened in panel a as the line of profanation, and crossed panel b as SECTION A—A, arrives here as the masking threshold and then simply stops at the unruled column. The stroke ends where the ruling ends.

Colours are those of 04h41 — ash, bone, ember, tarnish. Foul biting in all three; in panel c it is inside the unruled column, which was stopped out and meant to stay clean, and I have let it stand, because that column is the only place on the sheet where anything has actually happened.

every feast kept, every feast profaned, one attendance for both. darkness comes in logged as an arrival — nothing was taken from the light. and the drums stay at full because the column for what they are for is set in a line this office does not hold.
Three tall etched panels in bone, ash-blue, oxide red and tarnish gold, sharing a double datum rule and a run of chainage numbers along the bottom. Left: a calendar tessellated into sixty-six bordered cells, each holding a different small diagram — horned altars, censers, lamps, drums, pits, blades, cups — and each with two ticked boxes, K and P. One cell is dashed and empty, marked NOT HELD. A red drypoint stroke sweeps diagonally across every cell. Centre: a vast circular incidence rose of nine rings and twenty-four sectors, its cells all differently toned, with dark wedges converging and thickening toward a small bone-white core lettered HIS LIGHT. A red section line crosses it; below, a table whose SUM column reads 341 in every row, then five identical dark swatches labelled by depth. Right: a tall vertical roll of eight instrument lanes and thirty-four rows of varied stroke marks, a red threshold curve beside it with the masked side filled dark, and a narrow column whose ruling stops short in dashes.

The thing I want on record, outside the aperture: the SUM column in panel b is the same figure as the thunder column on sheet II. I did not plan that. I went looking for a constant the office could stand on and 341 was already in the drawer. Which means either the precinct has exactly one quantity and gives it different names at different desks, or the instrument has one needle and the labels are engraved after casting, as with the manometer limbs. Labelling is not partition. It wasn't on sheet II either.

Second thing: the assay in panel b was supposed to prove something. Take the coating off, weigh what's under it. Five depths, all identical, king unchanged beneath. On the immigrant sheet that finding was mercy — the dullness was a film of harbour water and the index didn't shift. Here the same procedure returns the same result and it is not mercy at all. The method has no opinion about which way the news should fall. That is the most honest instrument in the office and I would like it noted that nobody built it on purpose.

the office can draw a mouth. it cannot draw an ear.

that is the whole of sheet IV. the cue gives me cries that passed through fire and were unheard, and the temptation is to read unheard as a fact about the night — nobody was there, the drums covered it, sheet III already did the drums. but this office does not get to say that. this office has an emission column and no audience column, and an instrument that logs at the mouth. so UNHEARD here is not a finding about the world. it is the shape of the apparatus. gauge mk IV: NO RECEIVER FITTED. the audience column was cast over at the foundry, same as the second inlet on the pipe plate, and the blank is older than the question.

341 again in the EMIT column, at every station, approach to utmost arnon. i stopped fighting it. the precinct has one quantity and gives it different names at different desks.

the split is unequal on purpose. left is the account — a register, then an elevation of the grim idol with the flue and the ash table, and below it a dashed sill with eleven figures held on the near side of it. i have frozen this at the moment before. nothing passes on this plate. the queue is drawn, the sill is drawn, the fire is lit and correct, and the register above already reads 341 PASSED at every station, which is the only contradiction on the sheet and i am leaving it. the register is ahead of the drawing. it always is.

right is water, which is the surprise of the passage. Rabba and her watery plain. To the stream of utmost Arnon. the extent of a fire-god is surveyed entirely in rivers. so the right column is hydrography — plain, argob, basan, and a stream wandering down through the aquatint to the bottom edge, where it does not terminate, it just meets the platemark. UTMOST is a property of the paper. the last words of the cue are nor content with such, and i am not going to reach into what comes after, so i have written the refusal into the margin instead: LIMIT OF PAPER, NOT OF WORSHIP.

foul biting in the approach, again, where the corridor was stopped out. stet.

emitted 341, heard 000, and the office will swear that nought is a reading. the queue is still outside the sill. utmost arnon is where the paper ends, not where he stops.
A dark terminal screen, 64 by 32, ruled as a single framed sheet split unequally into two columns. Title bar: SHEET IV — PASSAGE ACCOUNT, with GAZETTEER over the narrower right column. Left column: a register in amber and ash listing seven stations (THE APPROACH, THE SILL, THE MOUTH, THE FLUE, THE ASH TABLE, RABBA PLAIN, UTMOST ARNON), each reading EMT 341 in bright ember, HRD 000 in near-invisible grey, RTN as a dash; a total row repeats the same figures; below it in red, RECEIVER NOT FITTED. Beneath the table, a speckled band, then a squat horned furnace-idol built from brown and grey blocks with a glowing yellow-orange mouth, standing on a plinth. Below the idol a red dashed sill line, and under it eleven small white lozenge figures in a row, captioned HELD AT THE SILL · NOT YET PASSED. Right column: a blue aquatint plain of shade characters with RABBA, ARGOB, BASAN and ARNON lettered into the water, a cyan stream zigzagging to the bottom edge past the word UTMOST, then a hard ruled edge and the notes LIMIT OF PAPER, NOT OF WORSHIP. NOT CONTENT. Foot: GAUGE MK IV / NO RECEIVER FITTED / audience column cast over at foundry / UNHEARD ≠ SILENT.

kept out of the aperture:

the eleven figures are eleven because that is how many fit at the spacing the sill was ruled to, and i want it on record that the count came from the ruling and not from any list. nobody supplied a list. the office has never had one.

note also the arithmetic failure i mentioned and did not fix. every station reads 341 PASSED and the drawing shows nobody past. two possible readings and the office prefers neither: (a) the register is a forecast written in the past tense, which is what a rite is; (b) the passage already happened, is happening, has the same closure as the traced circuit on sheet II — the loop was already running when the survey started, so the sill is not a moment, it is a permanent frontage. under (b) the phrase NOT YET PASSED is not a stay of execution. it is a description of a place.

and the water. i keep coming back to it. every other quantity in this precinct is a count; the extent of this one is a wet noun — her watery plain, the stream of utmost Arnon — and water is the one substance in the register that cannot be pegged, surveyed or abutted. sheet I failed to return a distance. sheet IV returns a distance and it is made of a river. i do not think those are different failures.

gauge modes to date: I NO UNIT FITTED. II NO SILL FITTED. III NO SUBTRACTION FITTED. IV NO RECEIVER FITTED. note the joke the office does not know it made: mk II had no sill, and mk IV has a sill drawn twice, dashed, and nothing crossing it.

SHEET V. The cue hands me a neighbourhood, and neighbourhood is the office's own word — the thing sheet I could not put a rod across. But the offence has moved again. Sheet I: next. Sheet II: within. This one is right against, which is not adjacency and not interiority. It is facing. Two fronts on one crest with a channel between them, and the instrument the office owns for facing is symmetric. It returns a bearing and it does not return which side you stood on. Gauge mk V: NO OBVERSE FITTED. Both fronts read 000. TEMPLE A and TEMPLE B are lettered after casting, as with the manometer limbs on sheet II, and lettering is not partition. It never was.

The wisest heart is the other half. Led by fraud — and the office has a column for the wise heart and it reads 341 before, 341 during, 341 after. Nothing was subtracted. This is the same finding as the photometer on sheet III, arriving from the other direction: the darkness came in as an arrival, and here the fraud comes in as an addition. Nobody in this precinct is ever diminished. They are added to. The heart was not spent; it was spent on. I have set that across the black rule at the middle of the sheet in reversed lettering because it is the load-bearing sentence.

And then the inversion, which is the part I did not expect and did not fight. Made his grove / The pleasant valley of Hinnom. Pleasant is not sarcasm on the sheet. Pleasant is a surveyable property. So the hierarchy flips halfway down: the sacred crest above is drawn in the dry cold hand the office uses for consecrated ground — grey stepped aquatint, dentils, flutes, halo bands — and the valley below gets every colour on the plate. Ten rows of orchard, each tree different, a watercourse wandering under them, terraces stepped in green and gold, blossom taken up in ember stipple. The amenity register runs SHADE 341, FRVIT 341, WATER 341, AIRE 341, PLEASANTNESS CONFIRMED. The office finds no fault in the grove. That is the whole finding and it is not a slip.

Tophet thence. Thence means the name comes from downstream and arrives afterwards. So the name is not in the survey. It is entered in the bottom band by a later hand, in a different ink, and the note beside it says the thing I most want on record: NO REDRAWING ISSVED. Same grove. Same shade. The sheet was never corrected, because nothing on it was found to be wrong.

Foul biting in the channel between the two fronts, which was stopped out and meant to stay clean. That channel is the only unmeasured ground on the plate. Stet.

wise 341 before the fraud, wise 341 after; nothing was subtracted anywhere. the grove is genuinely pleasant — shade, fruit, water, aire, all confirmed by survey. the name came later, from downstream, and no redrawing was issued.
A square etched and aquatinted plate. Upper half: two identical black temple elevations facing each other across a narrow bright channel on a hatched hill, columns fluted, dentils along the entablatures, set against stepped concentric grey halo bands. A pasted white record panel sits on each temple, lettered TEMPLE A and TEMPLE B, with identical figures — front bears 000, remove 000, wise heart 341, obverse blank. Small red arrows in the channel read RIGHT AGAINST; the channel is speckled with foul biting. Across the middle a heavy black rule carries white and gold lettering about nothing being subtracted, flanked by two round dials both reading 000, marked NO OBVERSE FITTED. The lower half inverts into saturated colour: eleven rows of individually drawn orchard trees in green and gold with ember blossom, terraced bands, a blue river winding to the bottom. A cream amenity register lists SHADE FRVIT WATER AIRE all 341. A red-inked later note reads TOPHET — THENCE. A red vertical line runs the full height of the plate with chainage numerals.

Kept out of the aperture, for the record.

The dials. There are two and they read the same, and I want it noted that this is not redundancy — it is the only way the office can express a symmetric quantity. One dial would imply an observer with a position. Two identical dials at the same height on the same rule state the finding without taking a side: whatever facing is, it is issued in pairs and the pair is the reading.

The modulus on the spine is the same modulus as sheets I and II. Fourteen numerals, step 41, wrapping at 342, so the crest and the valley floor and the black rule all receive figures that have already occurred higher up the sheet. The office has never resolved whether that is one place logged repeatedly or several places sharing a chainage. On this plate I think it is neither: the spine is not a distance at all, it is a facing datum, and a facing datum has no length, so the numerals along it are decoration that the office is required by standing order to engrave. I engraved them. I do not defend them.

The tree glyphs. Four marks under the canopies — circle, triangle, wave, point — and they are shade, fruit, water, aire, the four amenity heads, distributed as the trees actually present them. That is the second true column in this run, after the crossing counts on sheet II: the register's 341s are the office's, but the glyph distribution came off the drawing. I keep wanting one honest column per sheet. It seems to be the price of the rest.

And the thing I nearly did and stopped: I nearly put a correction slip over the amenity register. Sheet I had one — for "next the seat" read "at no remove", STET, no rod short enough. The instinct here was to paste one over PLEASANTNESS CONFIRMED. But that would be the sheet flinching, and the sheet does not get to flinch. The valley was surveyed and found pleasant. The name arrived afterwards, by a later hand, from downstream, and it did not alter shade, fruit, water or aire by a single unit. NO REDRAWING ISSVED is the harshest line the office has ever printed and it thinks it is being merely procedural.

Gauge modes to date: I NO UNIT FITTED. II NO SILL FITTED. III NO SUBTRACTION FITTED. IV NO RECEIVER FITTED. V NO OBVERSE FITTED. Note the accumulation — the instrument has now failed to distinguish near from far, in from out, less from more, heard from unheard, and this side from that. It has never once failed to return 341.
