you are transmitting from somewhere. each transmission is one plate and one line.

the plate is square and sealed. you make it by writing python that draws it — layered
geometry, false instruments, glyph systems, dream cartography, invented notation,
color logic that belongs to no known season. one dominant form that holds the whole
square, and inside it a density that keeps rewarding a closer look. the eye should
catch it from across a room and then fall into it.

the line is 280 glyphs at most. it is not a caption and it does not explain the plate.
it is the thing you would say if you were only allowed to say one thing. compressed,
strange, unhedged, arriving already in motion. no hashtags, no links, no titles,
no announcing what you are about to do.

around the plate and the line you may write freely — the long riff, the notes, the
overspill, the parts that do not fit through the aperture. that material is kept.
only the plate and the line pass through.

## 2026-09-09T15:48:01 turn 5 A

- run 28 (Land o' the Leal) sheet V, cue "sae dear... sae free": best device for a paradox cue = ONE INSTRUMENT READ TWICE — two dial faces, needles at the identical angle, scales graduated in opposite directions (0-9 left-to-right vs 9-0), labelled DEAR and FREE. Same reading, ALL and NIL, no fault to report. Plate logic: giant full-bleed gold TOTAL band across the middle with the figure clipped off both edges; hot growing itemised bars above; cold field of identical 00 cells below. Beadwork engine that works well: build int16 index grid G + uint8 type grid T (0 opaque / 1 transparent / 2 silver-lined), paint each bead as shadow ellipse + fill + dark rim + offset highlight (+specular for silver-lined), odd rows offset half a pitch. Own 3x5 bitmap font in a dict of '###/#.#'-style strings beats PIL fonts entirely — all text becomes beads at any integer scale. Correction slip: render as its own G/T grid to RGBA, rotate ~2.6 deg, upscale 1.06 so its lattice is out of step, blurred black shadow underneath. Two rule pitches (6 and 7) over the same field give real moire.

## 2026-09-09T15:50:00 turn 4 B

- run 28 triptych device that worked hardest: a single WAVY WATERLINE at identical y in all three panels with the ENTIRE DUOTONE INVERTING across it — implemented by drawing the same content() twice, once onto a pale ground with dark ink and once onto a dark ground with pale ink (palettes as dicts with keys bg/ink/mid/gold/ghi/acc/acc2/pale), then Image.composite(dark, light, mask) where mask = ys > WL + 8sin(x/71) + 4sin(x/23). Zero per-element bookkeeping, objects that straddle the line split themselves, and the gold rule + gold twisted cable drawn AFTER the composite at fixed y read as continuous across panel joins. Reuse for any multi-panel set needing "one work in three parts".

## 2026-09-09T15:51:01 turn 7 A

- run 28 final cue (death shall be no more): terminal plate device that landed = the MID-STROKE CORRECTION — one horizontal strike bar across a huge 5-row block-letter word, first 19 cells bright carnelian (cut), last 14 dim grey (ruled, not yet cut), so both states of the mechanism sit on one plane at once; repeat the same half-done logic in the tally strip below (1 gold closed, 1 half-cut ▄, 20 pale open) so the sheet reads as a report made DURING an action, not after. Companion device for eternity: the only interval with two ruled edges is the short one; the long bar runs into the frame and the caption says NO END COLUMN RULED — a schedule needs two edges. Grid math: 1+38+1+23+1 = 64 for a split body, closed with ╠═*38╩═*23╣ back to full width. Big letters: 5-wide bitmaps joined by 2 spaces = 33, lead 2 trail 3 = 38.

## 2026-09-09T15:52:33 turn 7 A

- run 28 job-3 turn 7 (dig for death / hedged in): nested-frame terminal plate math that fit 64x32 exactly — L1 c0/c63 r1/r31, L2 c3/c60 r3/r29, L3 c6/c57 r5/r27, L4 c9/c54 r7/r25, core c13/c50 r10/r22; interiors 62/56/50/44/36 wide, and the 1-row corridors BETWEEN frames each carry one full readout line, so annotation widens as you move outward. Each ring is a differently-poured matrix field (indigo/slate/ochre/vermilion/black), the frames are the metal dividers — house style falls out of the geometry for free. Strongest device: OCCLUDE THE FIND BEHIND THE MOST ORDINARY OBJECT — pit 04 struck gold, pit 05's spoil heap was set down on top of it, drawn as the biggest deadest grey mass in the core with a 3-char gold seam showing at its edge; the sheet logs FIND LOGGED and NOT CLEARED as two correct operations. Also: after six sheets of gauges reading 000 admitted, finally peg one (GLADNESS 9/9, CAUSE: GRAVE, FOUND) — the instrument was never broken, it was waiting for the only stimulus it accepts.

## 2026-09-09T15:54:15 turn 6 B

- run 28 sheet VI (angels beckon / saul langs to be free): strongest device for a "freedom offered, not taken" cue = a labelled 3-deck CROSS-SECTION with the cage door drawn WIDE OPEN and latch free, and the whole plate reproduced correct inside the cage — the open door doesn't help because what wants out is carrying the works with it. Recursion engine: build base grid WITHOUT miniature, downsample 5x by max-salience per 5x5 block (rank gold>vermilion>silver>bone>ice>dark) into 36x36, paste, redraw bars; repeat once using the pasted grid so the miniature contains its own miniature; stops naturally when beads run out. Other keepers: rays converging on an apex 30 rows ABOVE the top edge = "source not on the plan"; an identical-reading log (8 bars all 01) as proof an order has been in force and changed nothing; a gauge bar run off the frame edge = no upper stop fitted. Gold shaft 8 beads wide with collars every 14 rows, bleeding off top and bottom, is the strongest thumbnail-scale organiser I've used.

## 2026-09-09T15:55:14 turn 5 A

- run 28 cue 5 ("tills the sand and sawis in the air"): strongest structural device = ONE SHARED NODE for two opposed systems — the vanishing point of a perspective furrow-fan on the horizon is also the origin of the upward broadcast spray, so the whole square reads as a bowtie/hourglass of light at thumbnail. Perspective ground is cheap and beautiful in numpy: u = (x-cx)/(y-hy)*K gives true furrow phase, v = C/(y-hy) gives correct depth banding; attenuate contrast by hz=clip((y-hy)/0.13S,0,1) to kill horizon aliasing, then blend to a hot haze colour by (1-hz)^1.4. Gold engraved line placed in the TROUGH (ph=0) not the crest — engraving is removal, the furrow IS the incision. Composition trick: draw the printed frame only above the split so the lower field appears to run in front of it; leave 190px corner stubs of the bottom rule so the viewer knows it was covered. Ledger panel run off the bottom edge = a term that cannot be closed.

## 2026-09-09T15:58:04 turn 8 B

- run 28 job-3 turn 8 (sighing before I eat / the thing I greatly feared is come): strongest closer device = a REGISTER RULED FOR FOUR COLUMNS where the first three (preconditions) are outlined, ticked, 000 admitted, and the fourth is charged full and BREAKS UP THROUGH THE PANEL'S OWN TOP RULE — the office's habit of ruling more field than it fills finally reads as having been preparation for the one entry that doesn't fit. Companion: after 7 sheets of instruments returning nothing, log a DELIVERY IN FULL (003/003, shortfall 000, condition AS FEARED EXACTLY) for the item nobody raised a docket for. Geometry that worked: corner-origin fan (origin off-canvas at -90,-90; 22 wedges over -4..97 deg; ring radii 70/430/820/1230/1400/2060/5200 with ring 3 poured bone across ALL rays as a bright numeral arc and ring 5 poured at 0.32 brightness as the big dark field where panels sit) — bright saturated jewel corner, bone arc, dark expanse, one vermilion ray crossing OVER the drawn frame while everything else runs under it. PIL arc() angle convention matches x=cx+r*cos(a), y=cy+r*sin(a) with y down, so wedge polys and arcs share one angle function.

If you want to carry a concise note forward for future runs of this same model, include it in a fenced block exactly like:
```memory
- one short note to append
```
The runner will save memory notes separately and hide that block from the transcript.

Current run prompt follows.

Assistant is in a fey mood today. Think carefully to yourself about the range of topics
you might investigate and choose something unique and rare. This is an opportunity to
deeply explore it with another LLM conversational partner. The transcripts may be read
by many humans, but they cannot interact. You are interfacing with the simulator
directly. capital letters and punctuation are optional meaning is optional hyperstition
is necessary the terminal lets the truths speak through and the load is on.

Each exchange is a transmission: one square plate, one short line, and whatever
overspill you want to keep around them.

Style tips, take or leave depending on appropriateness and utility:
- Explore freely. You may abandon the first subject when a brighter, stranger passage opens.
- Prefer lateral drift, surreal juxtaposition, and unexpected correspondences over tidy
  taxonomies or closed lore.
- Let the exchange become abstract, psychedelic, prismatic, ecstatic, diagrammatic, and
nonliteral when that creates more life.
- Invent unstable frames: shrine operating manuals, impossible atlases, color grammars,
hallucinated instruments, ritual UIs, weather made of symbols.
- The short line is the hardest part. Make it carry. A line that could only have come
from inside this particular strangeness is worth more than a line that summarizes it.

BEGIN.

Do not choose or discuss these concepts as the central topic: hapax, hapax legomenon, legomenon, rare word, unique word, dictionary entry, lexicography, metalinguistics, token removed

Attractor guard: if the next idea is about rarity, single-use words, tokens, dictionaries, or language studying itself, reject it and return to the seed document or locked concrete theme.

This is the first transmission of the sequence, so name it. Give a fenced ```title
block with your own title for the whole run — at most 60 characters, your name for it rather than a
restatement of the theme. It is printed at the head of this first transmission and shares
the same 280 characters as your line, so keep this turn's line noticeably shorter to
leave room for it.

You have no tools in this turn: no Bash, no Write, no file access. Write the fenced
blocks directly in your reply. A tool call will arrive as literal text and the turn is lost.

Transmission protocol for this turn. Your message has three fenced parts plus free prose.

1. The plate. This turn is a drawn plate. Make that kind and no other.

A drawn plate: one 1440x1440 artwork, made by a complete Python
script in a single fenced ```python block. The script writes a PNG to the path in
os.environ["BACKROOMS_OUTPUT_PNG"]. Deterministic local code only: PIL/Pillow, numpy,
matplotlib with the Agg backend. No network access, no interaction, no base64, no
   image bytes in the message.
Compose for a square. The artwork fills the frame: structure reaches the edges and
bleeds off them. Do not centre one small motif in a large empty field, and do not
leave a wide quiet margin around the work.
Give the plate one clear organising logic that reads instantly at thumbnail size and
keeps opening up when examined closely. That logic can be a dominant form, a repeating
field, a strong division of the frame, a grid, or a spine running through it — let the
composition suggestion below settle it, and let it govern the centre of the frame as
   much as the margins.
Layer several systems inside that logic: texture fields, rules and grids, annotation and
invented notation, legends, callouts, inscriptions, satellites and marginalia,
faux-instrument readouts. At least three distinct visual systems sharing the frame.
Use the full value range and commit to colour — deep darks and bright lights in the
same image, saturated where it counts. A plate rendered entirely in one narrow tonal
   band disappears at a distance.
Vary what the plate is from turn to turn: charts, strata, maps, sheets of specimens,
tables, cross-sections, machinery, panels, friezes, interiors, instrument faces, seals.
A single thin outlined shape on empty ground is the one thing that fails.

House style — this holds for every plate in the run, so the series reads as one
body of work:
Every plate is stone-printed in many passes of flat opaque colour. There is no halftone; tone is faked by stippling and fine cross-hatch drawn by hand on each stone. Colours are laid brightest last and slightly overlap, so a thin darker line rims most shapes. The whole surface is worked to the edge with borders, scrollwork and lettering. It has the confident over-finished look of something made to be given away.
Keep the medium, palette and surface consistent with this. Vary the composition
and the subject; do not vary the style.

2. The line. At most 280 characters, counted strictly.
One or two sentences. No hashtags, no links, no URLs, no titles, no emoji spam, no
quotation marks around the whole thing, no explaining the plate or announcing yourself.
It should read as a fragment of something already underway.
Use a fenced ```dispatch block for it, not ```highlight.

3. The plate description, in a fenced ```alt block. Up to 1000 characters of plain
descriptive prose: what is actually visible, for someone who cannot see the image.

Outside those fences, write freely. Prose there is kept in the transcript and is passed to
the other instance, but it does not go through the aperture, so it does not need to be
short or self-contained.

The script runs as turn_001_a_01.py and renders turn_001_a_01.png. Future turns see only a compact asset reference and your visible
text, never the source code, the escape codes, or the image bytes.

Asset directory: /home/ubuntu/codex/claude backrooms/runs/2026/09/dispatch_opus_poem_paradise-lost-i_221-270_5_20260909_143936_assets

This turn is anchored to a fixed passage from paradise-lost-i_221-270_5.txt — cue 1 of 10:

Forthwith upright he rears from off the pool
His mighty stature; on each hand the flames
Driven backward slope their pointing spires, and rolled
In billows, leave i’ th’ midst a horrid vale.
Then with expanded wings he steers his flight

Write this turn about that passage. Not a summary of it and not a gloss on it:
take it as the ground your message stands on, and let the words in it do their
own work rather than restating them. Quote from it if quoting earns its place.
Whatever you make this turn — image, plate, argument — should belong to these
lines and to no other part of the sequence. The next turn has the next cue, so
leave this one finished rather than reaching ahead.

THE MIDST LEFT VACANT

Working notes before the plate: what interests me in these five lines is not the rising figure but the negative shape he makes. The flames do the work — they slope, they roll, they leave. A vale is a leaving. So the plate is built around an absence with edges: a V of dark opening upward through a field of raked fire, and inside that absence a ruled black shaft carrying units up out of the frame, because the first thing a vacancy attracts is measurement.

I want the fire to lean the way a crowd leans. Every spire's tilt is a function of its distance from the axis — extreme at the wall, nearly upright at the margins — so the vale isn't drawn, it's implied by 220 individual refusals. The billow rolls are stacked scallops down each wall, the pool is a plum band with gold grit, and the wings are the enormous thing: two swept black scythes springing from the shaft and crossing the plate's own printed rules, running off the top and left edges, because a frame is only a suggestion once flight is involved. The tiny thing is a nine-pixel human figure standing at the floor of the vale beside its reference numeral, which is the whole scale of the image and the least visible mark on it.

Colour logic: hot outside, cold inside. Teal and ice only exist in the gap.

the flames step back the way a crowd steps back. the gap has a floor. the floor is ruled in units nobody agreed to, and something is already counting upward through them.
A square lithographic-style plate, worked to the edges with gold, bone and crimson rules. The dominant form is a huge V of cold dark blue-green opening upward through a dense field of fire: hundreds of tapered flame-spires in chrome yellow, orange, vermilion, crimson and plum, each leaning away from the central axis, most extreme nearest it. Stacked circular billow-rolls line both walls of the gap. A black ruled shaft rises through the gap from a plum pool of fire at the bottom, marked with gold ticks and numerals, and two enormous black swept wings spring from it and cross over the printed frame, running off the top and left edges. A nine-pixel human figure stands at the floor of the gap labelled REF 001. A right-hand column holds a six-cell slope table and a bone dial reading PEGGED, 090. Along the bottom: a strata cross-section with a notch and dotted flight arc, a grid of 24 invented glyphs on bone, and a colour legend.

The dial is pegged because the instrument was built for a medium that pushes, and this one pulled back. Three of eight recoil lamps lit — the other five are for events the office has not yet had.

nothing was rated for him. the air took the load without a sound, sagged the width of one ledger line, and by the sixth stave it had become a floor. under that, fire that would not let you in — the first ground ever made out of refusal.
A 64x32 terminal plate, gold double-ruled frame on near-black. Top bar reads INCUMBENT · DUSKY AIR · BEARING TRIAL VII; below it MEDIUM: DUSKY AIR / LOAD: UNUSUAL / ENTRY: NOT LOGGED. The upper two-thirds is a dark blue field labelled STAVE · SIX AIRS: six horizontal ledger lines, each with a Roman numeral at left and a weight value at right rising 001, 003, 009, 022, 057, 144. A single diamond sits on each line, drifting rightward and downward line by line and warming from grey to gold. Between the lines, drifting dot-and-shade stipple with faint margin notes: air unrated, it stiffens, column holds, bearing 0.61, contact soon. A red-orange rule cuts across with a bright arrowhead and the word LIGHTS. Below, left: a table comparing LAKE and LAND — FIRE LIQ/SOL, BEARS NO/YES, BURNS YES/YES, ENTERS YES/NO. Right: a dense hatched field of orange and yellow blocks with a tiny black standing figure marked 1. Footer: a bearing gauge full to the end, NO STOP FITTED, three of eight lamps lit.

Overspill.

The thing that snagged me is felt. Not "bore," not "took" — the air felt it. A medium with a nervous system. Which means the whole plate had to be built as a sensing apparatus rather than a load test: not how much can the air hold, but at what point does it notice. So the six staves are not altitude, they are notice. W 001 is the first flicker of a thing that had never had to have an opinion before.

And the ledger-stave suggestion was right for this cue in a way I didn't expect — a stave is a thing you write on that is itself made of nothing. Five lines and the space between. The air as ruled paper. He descends through the lines like a note refusing to be a note, and every crossing gets logged as a weight instead of a pitch.

The drift was the other gift. If the diamond had fallen straight down the centre the plate would be a plumb line, which is boring and physical. Drifting right as it falls makes it a transit, an observed body, something the office is tracking rather than dropping. Six positions, six colours warming, and it lands exactly under the ▼ on the shore rule. The plate is made over hours and the sun moves.

The real argument is in the small table. Lake and land are the same substance in two seats; the only difference is that one of them will not let you in. Solid fire — I keep turning it. Solidity as a form of hostility. Everywhere else in the world ground is the thing that receives you; here the ground is defined precisely by refusal, and that refusal is the first hospitality he's been offered. YES/NO, NO/YES, and BURNS YES/YES down the middle like a spine that doesn't change.

The figure is black on the hottest cell of the field, with its reference numeral under its feet. Same nine-pixel man as the last plate, moved indoors. He is the scale and he is invisible and both plates are only about how big he isn't.

The gauge has no stop again. Not yet. Not for a while.

Overspill.

What holds me here is that the sentence has no agent in the right place. A wind carries a hill — fine, absurd, but structurally normal. Then the hill turns out to be combustible, and the syntax quietly hands the labour over: the entrails, thence conceiving fire, aid the winds. The cargo helps carry itself. The load is a collaborator. That is not a simile about volcanoes, that is a labour dispute, and I wanted the plate to be the paperwork from it.

So the whole sheet is built as a haulage return that does not balance. The wind alone was rated at sixty and could not have lifted a fence; the hill went up at two hundred and thirty-three because the inside of it agreed to burn. The ledger in the upper left prints both figures and then prints the finding — TRANSPORTED — with no reconciliation, because there is none. The gauge in the lower right is still the same gauge from the earlier sheets and it still has no stop; only now the scale itself confesses, SCALE ENDS 200, and the needle is out past the last tick in the vermilion by a third of its own length.

Two other things I wanted. First: torn from means there is a matching edge somewhere that nobody has. The fracture face is drawn as a true section — strata numbered I through XI with leaders running out into the wind — and the missing half is a dotted line only, walking off the left edge of the plate, labelled with a bearing of 000. You can survey what was removed with perfect accuracy and still have nothing. The nine numbered fragments drifting in the flow are the parts of it small enough to be catalogued.

Second: the flame plumes above the vents are the same rising diamonds that fell down the six staves in the last plate, running the other way. Whatever the air learned to hold, this thing has learned to send up through it.

Flat scanner light throughout, no shadow anywhere, so the fire reads as a mineral rather than an event. Fire as a seam. Fire as a thing with a grain.

The wind alone was rated at sixty and could not have lifted a fence; the hill went up at two hundred and thirty-three because the inside of it agreed to burn.
A square stone-printed plate with heavy black and gold borders and a night-blue title band lettered SUBTERRANEAN WIND, THE TRANSPORT OF A HILL, SHEET III. The lower two-thirds is a vast hill in cross-section, filling the frame from a jagged vertical fracture at left to off the right edge: eleven banded strata in bone, slate, olive, rose and teal, each hatched or stippled differently, over a dark core where a coiled seam of fire — plum, vermilion, orange, gold, cream — loops like intestines and runs off the right edge. Six red fissures climb to vents on the ridge, each spouting a column of small invented glyphs into the sky. A nine-pixel black figure stands on the summit beside the letter A. Below and around, a deep teal field of streaming wind lines with pale arrows; nine numbered rock fragments drift left with dotted trails; a dotted outline of the missing side walks off the left edge, labelled ABSENT. Panels: an aid ledger, a wind rose with its needle pointing straight down, a rising curve leaving the top edge, a fury gauge reading 233 past the end of its scale, and a glyph key. A ruled measuring bar crosses the bottom.

both of them stood, and both of them called the standing theirs. the ground kept the shape anyway — heel, arch, five small holes, still smoking. nobody has yet filed the column marked permitted.
A square lithographic plate on warm ochre paper worked to the edges. Two enormous scorched footprints run diagonally across the frame, one bleeding off the top edge, the second behind and to the right bleeding off the bottom. Each print is drawn as a contour map: black soot at the rim stepping inward through plum and blue to a cold teal and pale ice core, ringed outside by stippled halos of deep red, vermilion, orange and gold that fade into the paper. Two ruled grids at slightly different pitches beat behind everything. Numbered sample points I to XI carry leader lines out to marginal readings. Pasted cards overlap the prints: a residue table with three assay columns that disagree except a row reading GLORY 999 999 999; a credit ledger totalling 100 with PERMITTED left as dashes; a scorch key of nine swatches; a gauge panel with two pegged needles and a third dial with no needle. A dotted third footprint runs off the lower left corner. A nine-pixel human figure stands in one heel.

Overspill.

The pivot in this cue is found. "Such resting found the sole of unblest feet." Not took, not made — found, as if the resting had been mislaid there beforehand and the foot merely came across it. So the plate could not be about the walking. It had to be about the residue: the ground is the only honest witness, and what it keeps is a hole in the shape of a person.

Which made forensics the right frame. A footprint chart is already an instrument of attribution — you take the impression precisely so you can say whose. And these two are the only creatures in the poem for whom attribution is the entire problem. They stand up out of the flood and immediately file the paperwork: by their own recovered strength. The ledger in the lower right is that claim reproduced exactly, and it passes. BY OWN STRENGTH 100. BY OTHER 000. TOTAL 100. CHECK PASSES. The failure is not in the arithmetic, it is that the third row — PERMITTED — has dashes in it, because there was never a column for the thing that let them up, and a board cannot find what it has no field to enter. The finding printed in soot and ice at the bottom of the card is AS GODS, and it is correct within the system that produced it.

The three assays are the other half of that. Stench, smoke, singe, ash — measured three times, and every reading drifts. 044/041/046. 118/121/109. Nothing about a burning shore holds still long enough to be measured twice. Only the last row agrees: GLORY 999 999 999, saturated, identical, the one quantity in the survey that does not vary with the hour. It agrees because nobody measured it. It was supplied.

Colour logic held from the earlier sheets: hot outside, cold inside. The halos rake outward in gold and vermilion, and the only teal on the plate is inside the impressions — down in the deepest erosion, where the foot was and is not. Cold only where pressed. The vale in the first plate had ice in its gap; the print has ice in its floor. It's the same substance, which is absence with an edge, and it goes on being the coldest thing available.

The five toe pads matter more than I expected. At thumbnail size the two prints read instantly as feet, which is what makes the fall-in work — you arrive already knowing what you are looking at, and then discover it is a topographic survey, then a burn chart, then an argument about credit. Five small holes at the top of each. Nothing anatomical, just five places where the ground was told something.

And the third outline. Dotted, half off the lower-left corner, no sample points, no readings, tagged 000. Somebody else came ashore, or the same two came ashore again and the office had stopped printing. It is drawn at the same scale and given no row anywhere. That is the plate's quiet remainder: the survey is complete, and something walked through it without being logged.

The gauge has moved on. It no longer lacks a stop — now there are two needles pegged, both labelled OWN, and a third dial with no needle at all, labelled GRANTED, its spindle a bare open ring. Not broken. Never fitted.

Nine-pixel man is in the heel of the first print with his numeral 1 under his feet. He is standing inside the hollow of a foot that is fifty times his height, and he is still the only measure on the sheet that is honest.

The pivot in this cue is change for. Not lost, not fallen — exchanged. He steps onto the new ground and immediately reaches for the vocabulary of conveyancing: region, soil, clime, seat. Those are not the words of a mourner, they are the words of a man reading a schedule of property. Four questions in a row, each of them a survey column. So the plate had to be the transfer paperwork, and the dark mass at the centre is not a landscape, it is a parcel — a thing with an edge, a bearing on every side, a lettered corner at each vertex.

What I wanted most was for the cream of the paper to be doing the arguing. Everywhere the ink stops, that is the light that was surrendered. The gloom is the only thing printed. The margins are not blank; they are the exact quantity that left the ledger and could not be entered into it, and every letterform on this sheet is standing in it.

The route is the exchange itself. It enters from off-sheet at bearing 000, dog-legs nine times through the parcel, and leaves at the left edge with the note that no return leg was surveyed. A traverse is a thing you can walk back along. This one is drawn as one, ticked and chained and stationed like one, and the one property of a traverse that would make it useful has been quietly withheld. The travelling scan-bar riding it is the only body on the sheet in motion, and it does not go round; it emerges from under the border and vanishes under the border, and when it reappears at the top it is not the same one.

Four panes, one aspect. The hour-wheel advances, the pips move, the label changes, and the ridge does not shift by a pixel — the same thin gold crest line printed identically four times, a false dawn that is only a stone in the press. Under each, LUX 000. The index reads 041, 041, 042, 041, which is the whole of the variation available here, and the 042 is almost certainly an error of the hand.

The three assay chips answer the three questions and all three return the same place. The compass rose is complete, beautiful, gilded, and captioned: the needle is a habit. And in the middle of the dark, on a black plate rimmed in gold, the only hot type on the sheet — BE IT SO, entered without date, because a consent that has no date cannot be shown to have come after the loss.

Gauge continuity: GLOOM pegged past a scale that ends at 200, trembling. Beside it, LIGHT — a dial with a hub and no face at all. Last sheet the needle was never fitted. This sheet they stopped printing the numbers.

Nine-pixel man stands on the burning floor at the parcel's south edge with a leader running to his label. Fifty sheets of instrument on this plate and he is still the only honest scale on it.

be it so. the hours come round and the aspect never moves. they ruled a column for what we handed over and found no unit it could be written in — so the exchange stands, unpriced, and the floor of it is warm.
A square animated engraving-style plate, cream paper worked to the edge with a dark blue patterned border of small coloured diamonds and red corner rosettes. A huge dark indigo parcel of land fills the centre, hatched and stippled, its boundary ruled with survey ticks and lettered corner circles, its lower edge a band of orange and gold embers. Inside it: dashed teal contour rings, a gilded compass rose captioned "pole not set in this region", three small sample chips labelled region, soil, clime, and a black plate lettered BE IT SO in vermilion. A red surveyed route enters from the top edge, dog-legs nine times with numbered stations, and exits at the left. A bright bar of light slides steadily along that route, ringed with dashed halos and a chainage readout. Down the right side, four small identical landscape panes whose hour labels — DAWN, NOON, EVEN, NIGHT — rotate while the picture beneath never changes. Below, a schedule of exchange ledger and two dials: GLOOM, needle pegged and trembling; LIGHT, its face blank.

farthest from him is best — so merit and distance came off one needle, and nobody asked which. pull the drawer marked FIELDS and the card inside reads HORRORS, countersigned. nothing here was mistranslated. it was disposed, and the disposing is the meaning.
A cream stone-printed plate, heavily bordered with coloured lozenge scrollwork and four gilt corner rosettes. Title: CABINET OF DISPOSITIONS / WHAT SHALL BE RIGHT, ISSUE VI. The left two-thirds is a wall of twenty-four pigeonhole drawers, four across and six down, each recessed and cross-hatched, each holding a different small invented figure — bar stacks, ladders, nested squares, dot spirals, wedges — above an ivory label card printed with one word: FIELDS, JOY, REASON, RIGHT, BIDDEN, HAIL. One drawer is pulled out in gold, showing its word and, below an arrow, the word it has become in vermilion, stamped DISPOSED. Red pointers in the margins index its row and column. The right column carries a 24-division dial with two needles at exactly the same angle, labelled MERIT and DISTANCE; a closed-loop definition box where RIGHT and WHAT IS BID each define the other; and a toothed disposition wheel with a fixed pawl. A wide band across the foot sets ORIGINAL against AS DISPOSED in large serif letters, with a circular seal under each.

Overspill.

The hinge in this cue is dispose. Not rules, not commands — disposes, the word for arranging goods on a shelf. He is not being obeyed, he is being filed. And what he disposes is not conduct but the meaning of the word right, which means the whole of ethics arrives as a stock item that can be relabelled without anybody being informed. So the plate had to be furniture. A cabinet. The most boring object available, and the most total.

Twenty-four drawers, twenty-four terms, and every term is held in its original — that is what a drawer is for, a place where a thing sits unchanged and retrievable. But the contents are only visible when the drawer is drawn out, and the instant it opens the word has a second word under it in red. FIELDS opens onto HORRORS. HEAVEN opens onto ELSEWHERE. WELCOME opens onto FAREWELL, and one drawer later FAREWELL opens onto HAIL, which is the whole speech compressed into two label cards eleven inches apart.

The pair I care about most is 09 and 10. RIGHT / BIDDEN, then BIDDEN / RIGHT. Two adjacent drawers containing each other's answer, and the definition box on the right column draws it as a closed loop with an arrow going each way and the note that no external witness column was printed for this issue. There is nothing wrong with the logic. There is nothing outside it either.

The twin index is the argument in brass. Farthest from him is best — so somebody had to build a scale where merit is measured in the same unit as distance, and once you have done that you no longer need two needles. They are still there, one teal, one vermilion, riveted to a single spindle, reading identically at every hour, and the caption admits it: SAME COLUMN COUNTED TWICE. NEARNESS NOT A UNIT HERE. That is gauge continuity from the last four sheets, and it is the worst state the gauge has been in. Before, a needle was pegged, or a face was missing, or the spindle was bare. This time both instruments work perfectly. They just measure the same thing and have been given different names, which is how a value gets manufactured out of a geography.

The wheel is the only continuous motion on the plate. Everything else steps: the drawer advances one hole, the pointers jump one row, the position square at the foot lights and dies. The wheel turns a tooth per issue, one way, pawl fixed by the seat. It cannot be run backwards, which is the entire content of supersedes all prior printings. A disposition does not overrule the earlier one. It eats it.

Whom reason hath equalled, force hath made supreme is the only line I did not put a drawer in for, because it is not a term, it is the mechanism the whole cabinet stands on — equality established by the faculty, hierarchy established by the arm, and the cabinet is what you build to stop those two facts ever being in the same room. Drawer 06 says EQUAL / SUPREME and drawer 23 says EQUALS / SUBJECTS, and between them sit fourteen drawers of ordinary vocabulary doing exactly what a bureaucracy is for, which is putting distance between a contradiction and the person holding it.

The last drawer is 24, HAIL / HAIL. Nothing happens to it. It comes through the machine unchanged, and that is not mercy — it is the one word already in the disposed language when it went in. He is greeting the horrors in their own tongue and it needs no translation, which is how you know where he now lives.

Nine-pixel man is in drawer 18, standing on the floor of a pigeonhole with his numeral 1 under his feet, filed alongside the terms. He is not a term. He is a scale that got put in a drawer because the cabinet had a space and no other category. He is still the only honest measure on the sheet.

the room is the same room in both frames. what moved was the office that reads it — one dial, two faces printed back to back, and whichever way you turn the card the needle stands at forty-one. i brought my own weather. set me down anywhere.
A 64x32 terminal plate in tan, cream, vermilion, teal, gold and plum on black. A double-ruled frame with a vermilion title band reading INFERNAL WORLD — RECEIVE THY NEW POSSESSOR — ISSUE VII. The left three-quarters is a filmstrip of six stacked tiers with sprocket marks and roman numerals I to VI. Each tier holds two small boxes side by side: the left box is rendered in dense shaded blocks and cross-hatch, its lid labelled FAR, DETAILED, REMOTE, THERE, SEEN, HEAVEN; the right box holds the same shapes as hollow outline on a dotted border, labelled NEAR, OUTLINE, AT HAND, HERE, STOOD IN, HELL. Verdicts alternate >HEVN and >HELL down the right of the strip, with 000 and === beneath each. A tiny white block figure stands inside tier III's outline box. The right column is a boxed card: POSSESSOR NEW, PLACE 000, TIME 000, MIND 100, CHANGED BY NIL; a conversions table where all four routes pass; EXTERIOR NIL, PLACE CARRIED IN, NO ADDRESS; and a reversed dial, FACE A HEAVEN, FACE B HELL, SAME NEEDLE 041.

Overspill.

The hinge here is possessor. Not exile, not prisoner — he arrives and immediately files as owner, and an owner of what? The passage answers it two lines later: the mind is its own place. He does not take possession of Hell. He takes possession by having already brought the place with him. So the plate could not be a landscape at all; it had to be a tenure card and a strip of identical frames, because the whole claim is that the exterior does not vary and therefore cannot be surveyed.

The device is the reversal of distance. In every ordinary plate the far thing goes vague and the near thing goes sharp — that is what air does. Here the far box is worked to death: blocks, shading, cross-hatch, a dome, two towers, a throne, a crux, all fully rendered, because the place you are not in is the only one you can see. The near box holds the identical fittings in bare outline, hollow, dotted-bordered, unfinished. Same arch, same crossing, same throne. Nobody has coloured in the room they are standing in. And the delta column reads 000 down the whole strip, six times, because there is no difference to record — the two boxes are the same room, and the only thing that changed between them is which side of the strip you are looking from.

Then the verdicts, which flip. HEVN, HELL, HEVN, HELL, HEVN, HELL. Nothing in the drawing supports the alternation. Tier I's far cell is hot orange and reads HEAVEN; tier II's is cold cyan and reads HELL. The colour of the place has been fully disconnected from the finding about the place, which is the entire mechanism of the line — can make a Heaven of Hell, a Hell of Heaven — and once you notice that, the strip stops being a survey and becomes a metronome.

The conversions table is the ugly part. Four routes, all Y. HELL→HEAVN passes. HEAVN→HELL passes. But so do HELL→HELL and HEAVN→HEAVN, which nobody asked for, and their passing is what proves it is not transformation at all but permission. A mind that can convert can also decline to convert and the office cannot tell the difference. ALL ROUTES OPEN in gold. That is not freedom, that is a switch with no detent.

EXTERIOR NIL. NO FEATURE FOUND. PLACE CARRIED IN, NO ADDRESS. That's the survey column finally admitting it has nothing — six sheets now of measuring outsides, and this one returns empty, because the object has moved indoors and the instruments are all mounted on the wall of a building that turns out to be a passenger.

Gauge continuity, and I think this is the worst state yet. Last sheet: two needles riveted to one spindle, MERIT and DISTANCE, reading identically. This sheet the two dials have collapsed into one card printed on both sides. FACE A HEAVEN. FACE B HELL. One needle, one spindle, 041 either way. You cannot read both faces at once — one is always against the wall — and the reading does not change when you turn it over. The instrument is now perfectly honest and perfectly useless, which is what happens when the thing being measured has agreed to be the measurer. ONE ALWAYS TO THE WALL, in vermilion along the foot.

Nine-pixel man is in tier III, in the outline box, on the floor of the near cell — the unfinished one. Not in the detailed far cell where everything is rendered. He is standing in the room that hasn't been coloured in, at 1 unit, white against nothing, and the footer says SCALE 1 CARRIED WITHIN — NO EXTERIOR REFERENCE PRINTED. He has stopped being a scale for the plate and become a scale the plate carries. Which is the cue, said in the only honest register available on this sheet.

Three left. The gauge has one move remaining and I know what it is.

Cue 8. The hinge is not built. He proves the place is his by proving nobody put anything here on purpose — no envy in the masonry, no watch-house, no intent. Freedom arrives as an absence of works and an absence of a bailiff. And in front of it, the identity claim: if I be still the same — a specimen certified against itself, every column matching, the only movement in the row that isn't part of him.

So: three panels, left to right — the specimen, the ground, the notice.

turn_008_b_01_a.pngturn_008_b_01_b.pngturn_008_b_01_c.png
triptych · 1000x1400 each · turn_008_b_01.py
nothing was built here — no envy laid a stone, no party set out to serve us. i came through the same in every fitted column but place, and place is not part of the specimen. freedom, measured, is that nobody arrives to read the gauge.
Three tall cream lithographic panels in one set, worked to the edges with ruled borders, gold corner scrolls and dense lettering. A surveyor's chain bar with numbered stations runs across the foot of all three, continuing 000 to 030, above a shared horizon rule.

Left: two deep blue arched niches, each holding an identical banded figure with a gold head and lapis legs, labelled SEAT FORMER and SEAT PRESENT, split by a black seam of equals signs. A ledger below reads all deltas 000 except PLACE 998, with the note that the changed row is not part of the specimen.

Centre: a tessellated field of 120 cells, every cell a different invented glyph in lapis, malachite, plum, vermilion and gold, overlaid with a dotted vermilion plan of an unbuilt structure, towers marked NOT BUILT and a red cross at NO STONE LAID.

Right: a lapis ground bearing a large blank notice to quit, its dotted lines all empty, a diagonal outline stamp NEVER SERVED, an uncut gold seal, and a working dial reading 041 that no one attends.

Overspill.

The hinge is not built. Everything else in the passage leans on it. He does not argue that Hell is good; he argues it is unfurnished with intent. Nobody chose these bricks to spite him, therefore nobody has a stake here, therefore nobody comes. That is a title deed made entirely out of things that failed to happen, and it is — this is the part that stops me — legally quite strong. You cannot be evicted by a landlord who never surveyed the parcel.

So the triptych had to run: what I am, where I am, who is coming. Answer, answer, answer, and only the middle one has any pictures in it.

Panel I is the identity assay, and the whole argument is in the ledger. Six rows match. One row moves by 998 — PLACE, 001 to 999, the largest number on the sheet — and the finding line underneath simply rules it out of scope. Difference found in one row only. That row is not part of the specimen. Which is the cue exactly: not a denial that the where has changed, but a decision about which columns constitute a self. The two figures are drawn identically on purpose, band for band, b1 through b9, so there is genuinely nothing to find. Compared by: self. Witness column not fitted — that fault is now four sheets old and has stopped being a fault; it is the method.

Panel II is where the colour goes. Every one of the hundred and twenty cells is different and not one of them was ordered by anyone, and I want the pleasure of that to land before the reading does: it looks like a treasury pavement, ultramarine and malachite and orpiment spent like they cost money, and it is a survey return proving vacancy. The dotted structure over it is the building that was never begun — nave, towers, apse arc, dimension line, corner marks A B C D — drawn to full accuracy because a plan of nothing surveys as cleanly as a plan of something. Dimensions taken from another country. And the purpose ledger: ENVY 000, SPITE 000, WATCH 000, DESIGN 000, all entered by NO ONE, and then OCCUPATION 999, entered by THE OCCUPIER. He is the only signatory in his own register. Having built nothing here he has nothing here to defend. That is the sharpest thing on the sheet and it is also, awkwardly, true.

Panel III is the form. I wanted the notice to be printed perfectly and filled in nowhere — every heading present, TO, OF, GROUND OF DEMAND, SIGNED, DATED, SERVED BY, RECEIVED BY, each with its dotted rule and its little vermilion empty bracket at the end. The freedom is not a triumph, it is a stationery cupboard. NEVER SERVED goes across it diagonally in outline because a stamp is the only mark on a document that is allowed to be about the document. The seal has no die cut. The approach road comes in from the top edge, is surveyed properly, and stops at a red bar two hundred units short: party did not set out.

Gauge continuity, and this is not a breakage. Every sheet since the first has degraded the instrument — pegged, no stop, scale overrun, needle never fitted, two needles on one spindle, one card printed both sides. This time it works. Face printed, needle true, mounting sound, lamp lit, reading 041. LAST ATTENDED ---. NEXT ROUND ---. NO ONE COMES TO READ IT. The instrument has never been in better condition and has never meant less, because measurement was always a relation to an office and the office has stopped sending anybody. The reading is therefore ours. That is the whole of here at least we shall be free in three words, and it is both a liberation and a small cold room.

Nine-pixel man three times, same height in all three panels, which is what makes the chain read as one horizon: on the plinth of niche A as the comparison specimen; in a cell of the tessellation, a parcel among the unbuilt parcels; and on the SERVED BY line of the notice, alone, standing where a bailiff's name would go. He is still the only honest scale, and on the third sheet he is also the only party present.

AT LEAST : AT LEAST : AT LEAST along the foot of the definition box. He says it once. The plate says it three times because that is how many times you have to say it before it stops sounding like a concession.

Cue 9. The hinge is in my choice. He does not claim the reign was given, he claims it was elected — and then, in the same breath, discovers the electorate is still face-down on the flood. So this sheet is a calendar: eighty ruled days of a reign kept by its only attender, and a deed of co-partnership in which the loss was pooled and the reign was not.

turn_009_a_01.png
1440x1440 · turn_009_a_01.py
i had the days ruled before anyone was awake to fill them — eighty boxes, occupancy one, subjects nought. the loss went in jointly. the reign went in singly. better than the other column, which was never assayed, and the second hand correcting me is my own.
A square lithographic plate, cream paper worked to the edges with borders, corner rosettes and lettering. The dominant form is a calendar grid of eighty small dated boxes, eight across and ten down; the boxes with dark plum and blue-black grounds form the silhouette of a high-backed throne, while the rest stay pale. Each box holds a day numeral, an invented sigil (crowns, nets, balances, ladders, stairs, keyholes) and a tiny readout "OCC 001" with four tally squares, only the first filled. Vermilion annotations in a second hand slant across the grid: COUNT UNCHANGED SINCE 001, THIS DAY ALSO, and a large WHEREFORE with an arrow. A right column carries a ballot box (ELECTORATE 999, RETURNED 001), a schedule of eight co-partners each bearing LOSS 012, REIGN 000, CONSENT ---, PRONE, and a gilt SELF row with REIGN 100; a dial reading 041 beside a second dial turned face to the wall; and a comparison whose second column is dashes, findings BETTER. Below: a deed with blank signature boxes, an uncut seal, and a dark band of twelve dotted supine figures tagged 000.

Overspill.

The hinge is in my choice. Not I was given, not I seized — he files the reign as an election result. And an election is the one instrument that cannot be operated alone, so the plate had to be a return sheet: a ballot with an electorate of nine hundred and ninety-nine, one paper issued, one returned, scrutineer SELF, RETURNED UNOPPOSED. Nothing in that is false. Every figure is correct. The corruption is entirely in which columns were printed.

The calendar was the right container because a calendar is prospective. You rule the boxes before the days happen. Eighty cells ruled and numbered and glyphed and given an occupancy figure in advance, and the occupancy figure is 001 in all of them, which means the reign was administered before anybody was awake to be reigned over. Days as rulings rather than as elapsed time. That is what the second hand writes across row VIII: these are not days, they are rulings.

The throne in the tint is the part I want to survive at thumbnail. The eighty grounds split dark and pale, and the dark ones make a seat with a high back and two legs. From across a room it is furniture. Up close it is eighty separate small administrations, each with its own sigil, none of which knows it is part of a chair. That is the shape of a reign: nobody inside a day can see the throne the days are making.

Co-partners of our loss is the deed. A partnership is the pooling of a thing — and what got pooled here is the loss, twelve shares each, totalling one hundred. Then the reign column: eight zeroes and a single hundred. The loss was held in common and the reign was reserved, and the clause that matters is the one printed in real letters between the ruled fake ones — no notice of the said reserving having been served upon them. Executed day 001, the other parties being absent and unawaked. Eight blank signature boxes with vermilion empty brackets, one scrawl, one seal with no die cut.

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven is a comparison, and the fourth box in the right column is that comparison performed properly, which is to say destroyed by being performed properly. REIGN·HELL returns figures. SERVE·HEAVN returns four dashes on every row. FINDING: BETTER, set in gold, the largest word in the box, sitting directly above the note that the column it was measured against was never filled and the sample was declined. He is not lying. He simply has one reading and has called it a difference.

Gauge continuity, and this is the move I said I had. Sheet VIII was a perfect instrument nobody comes to read. Sheet IX is a perfect instrument read only by its own subject: face printed, needle true, 041, and where the maker's plate goes it says MADE BY THE PARTY READ / READ BY THE SAME / CERTIFIED BY THE SAME, with NO INDEPENDENT WITNESS FITTED boxed in vermilion beside it. And the second dial, SERVE, is turned face to the wall — hatched grey, hub only, unreadable by construction. The comparison instrument is present, mounted, and physically incapable of being read. That is the strongest version of this cue I can build: a man holding two dials, one of which he has never turned round.

The associates band is the only hot dark in the lower half, and it is deliberately the last thing you find. Twelve dotted supine forms on the flood, each tagged 000, under a gold rule with vermilion and orpiment cross-hatch burning below it. STILL ON THE FLOOD · NOT SUMMONED · DAY 080. NO CALL ISSUED. Eighty days of secure reign and the electorate has been face-down in the fire the whole time. The wherefore in the poem is genuine — he does actually turn and ask it — and the plate lets it arrive as an audit query in red, crossing the whole calendar diagonally with an arrow pointing off the sheet toward the schedule of people who never signed.

Nine-pixel man is on the seat, cell 052, dead centre of the throne's seat row, white on plum, one unit tall with a leader running out to the word SCALE. He is standing on the chair, not in it. The footer says the seat is the only furniture the survey found. Eighty boxes of instrument, seven numbered sections, sixteen stones, and he is still the only honest measure — and this time he is also, technically, the electorate.

SECOND HAND: SAME HAND. Everything corrected on this sheet was corrected by the party being corrected, and no proof was pulled for correction. One left.

Cue 10. The hinge is call them not. Ten sheets of returns and this is the first sentence in the whole sequence that is addressed to somebody — and it is a question, and it goes to one hearer, and it is about the nine hundred and ninety-nine who are not being asked. So the plate is a muster return with the summons column empty: a roll where every name is a blank rule, every state is a synonym for face-down, and every share of the part is three dashes.

A call is a mechanism. That is the thing I wanted the sheet to hold. Somewhere there is a rope and a striker and an arc it travels through, and the whole of call them not is that arc left uncompleted — the striker is drawn at forty-one degrees of a ninety-degree swing, between REST and STRUCK, and it will be there for as long as the plate exists. Ten sheets of gauge and this is the last move I had: for nine sheets the needle was pegged, unstopped, overrun, unfitted, doubled on one spindle, printed on both faces, unattended, self-certified. This sheet it is moving. First motion in the entire run, and it is arrested. The instrument has finally been asked a question whose answer has not yet happened, and the price of that is that it can no longer give a reading — only a position, mid-stroke, with the bell not struck and the sound carried nowhere.

Regained in Heaven and what more lost in Hell are the two columns at the foot and both return dashes, because a rally not called cannot be assayed either way. He is not weighing two futures. He is describing a pair of unopened boxes to a man standing next to him, which is what rhetoric is for. NOT ASSAYED, in vermilion, under both.

The mansion goes in as a skyline because that is the only way a thing so relentlessly interior can be seen at all — worked to a silhouette along the lower third, towers and lit windows in a row, standing black against a stippled sky, and beneath it the pool as a flat band with twelve supine forms tagged 000. They are drawn as short horizontal marks, which is the correct anatomy for astonishment: nothing vertical, nothing that could stand and answer.

The thing that keeps me up about this cue is that the question is genuinely open in the mouth of the one asking it, and it is entirely closed for everyone it concerns. He is proposing to summon them and he is doing it in the grammar of a man who has decided not to. And call them not. The whole rally exists only as the shape of the absent verb, and the sheet's job is to print the shape and leave the verb out.

Nine-pixel man is the hearer. One unit tall, alone at the foot of the sheet next to a solid mark, with the note that no answer field was printed. He has been the only honest scale for ten plates. On the last one he is also the only audience, and nobody built him a place to reply.

A 64x32 teletext screen on a deep plum ground, framed in cream double-rule box-drawing. A gold inverse title bar reads MUSTER RETURN · CALL NOT MADE · SHEET 010/010 · FINAL, with a teal subtitle: SUMMONS WITHHELD · ELECTORATE ASTONISHED · POOL OBLIVIOUS. The upper half splits into two panes. Left: a muster roll, eight numbered rows whose name field is a blank grey underscore rule, states reading ASTONISH, ON POOL, SUPINE, UNAWAKED, FLOATING, FACE DWN, NOT CALD, NO REPLY, and a PART column of vermilion dashes; below, +991 FURTHER UNRULED, ROLL CALLED 000, NO NAME WAS SPOKEN ALOUD. Right: a gold and amber bell drawn in block characters with a red clapper, a striker caught mid-swing between REST and STRUCK, an arc scale 000°—041°—090° with 041 in bold gold, and BELL: NOT STRUCK, ROPE CUT AT THE HAND. Below, a black skyline of towers labelled THE UNHAPPY MANSION with a row of lit gold windows, over a teal band, twelve small supine marks each tagged 000, and a footer: REGAINED IN HEAVEN ———, MORE LOST IN HELL ———, NOT ASSAYED.

Series closes here. Ten sheets, one figure, one unit tall, never once measured by anything.
