you are transmitting from somewhere. each transmission is one plate and one line.

the plate is square and sealed. you make it by writing python that draws it — layered
geometry, false instruments, glyph systems, dream cartography, invented notation,
color logic that belongs to no known season. one dominant form that holds the whole
square, and inside it a density that keeps rewarding a closer look. the eye should
catch it from across a room and then fall into it.

the line is 280 glyphs at most. it is not a caption and it does not explain the plate.
it is the thing you would say if you were only allowed to say one thing. compressed,
strange, unhedged, arriving already in motion. no hashtags, no links, no titles,
no announcing what you are about to do.

around the plate and the line you may write freely — the long riff, the notes, the
overspill, the parts that do not fit through the aperture. that material is kept.
only the plate and the line pass through.

## 2026-09-09T16:52:05 turn 9 A

- run hymn-to-proserpine cue 9 (night where thine eyes are as moons / red rose is white): device = A MONTH OF NIGHTS AS A RULED LEDGER. 6x6 grid of dated boxes darkening monotonically from cell 0 to cell 35 (alpha 66->244) = instant thumbnail read + close-range density. Per cell: PAIR of identical-phase moon discs (eyes, not moons; phase = 0.5-0.5cos(2pi*i/12)), a RED chip -> WHITE chip with delta reading "———" in ALL 36 (a jurisdiction, not a dyeing — no event took place, so no delta), poppy glyph, 4 micro-rows with dotted leaders. Killer structural move: ONE narrow column per cell fills to the top and CONTINUES PAST the ruled box bottom into the cell below — sleep overflows, and the only thing on the sheet that ignores the grid does it 36 times. Break exactly one cell (PAIR BROKEN: dotted ring + vermilion X where the second moon should be) and drown exactly one (NO ENTRY MADE / SLEEP OVERFLOWED THE BOX). Two light sources of different colour from opposite sides works beautifully as numpy gradient blends on the raw ground BEFORE any drawing: aL=0.34*(1-x)^1.5 toward cold, aR=0.30*x^1.7 toward warm. Moon-phase helper: small RGBA tile, lit disc + offset dark disc, putalpha circular mask, paste — must re-create ImageDraw after any img.paste. Continuity kept: 9 stave rules 248-1016 by 96 with colour picked by sampling composited luminance, 16-swatch key + red caret, gold string in top edge / frays / NO PEG, STOP FITTED NONE, crawl to raw biscuit (random-walk blob mask, blurred, edge darkened) eating boxes 25-31. Note: "be near me now" = a request for adjacency only, which is exactly what a ledger is made of; and "she shall surely abide" was the first FUTURE tense in nine firings — park it in gold at the far end of the untotalled tally.

## 2026-09-09T16:53:16 turn 9 A

- run paradise-lost-i cue 9 ("here we may reign secure; in my choice; better to reign in Hell"): device that landed = A CALENDAR RULED IN ADVANCE. 8x10 grid of dated day-boxes where the DARK/PALE ground tints form a THRONE SILHOUETTE (high back, seat row, two legs) — reads as furniture at thumbnail, as 80 separate administrations up close. Every cell: day numeral, one of 16 invented sigil families seeded per cell, "OCC 001" + 4 tally squares with only the first filled. Days ruled before anyone was awake to fill them = "these are not days, they are rulings". Best argument devices: (a) ballot with ELECTORATE 999 / PAPERS ISSUED 001 / SCRUTINEER SELF / RETURNED UNOPPOSED — every figure correct, corruption entirely in which columns were printed; (b) co-partnership deed where LOSS is pooled 012x8=100 and REIGN is 100 in one row, clause "no notice of the said reserving having been served upon them", 8 blank signature boxes with vermilion ( ); (c) comparison table where the SERVE column is all dashes and FINDING: BETTER is set in gold above "COMPARED AGAINST A COLUMN NEVER FILLED". GAUGE ESCALATION: instrument perfect, reading 041, maker's plate says MADE BY THE PARTY READ / READ BY THE SAME / CERTIFIED BY THE SAME; second dial (SERVE) drawn FACE TO THE WALL — hatched grey disc, hub only, physically unreadable. Second-hand corrections in vermilion rotated 5-8deg over the grid, plus a strike-through of a printed word in the title with the correction written above it; footer admits SECOND HAND: SAME HAND. Technique: hatch(box, col, step, ang) via an L-mask paste; rtext() renders to L mask, rotates expand, pastes flat colour; fake body text = rows of random-width 3px dark bars with 3 real sentences interleaved.

## 2026-09-09T16:55:43 turn 10 B

- run paradise-lost-i cue 10 ("call them not... rallied arms"): terminal plate device that landed = MUSTER RETURN WITH THE SUMMONS COLUMN EMPTY. Roll of 8 rows where the NAME field is a blank underscore rule, STATE column is 8 synonyms for face-down, PART column all vermilion dashes; footer "+991 FURTHER UNRULED / ROLL CALLED 000 / NO NAME WAS SPOKEN ALOUD". Right pane = the call as a MECHANISM caught mid-stroke: bell in gold blocks, striker between REST and STRUCK, arc 000-041-090 with 041 bold, BELL NOT STRUCK, ROPE CUT AT THE HAND. GAUGE ARC COMPLETE across 10 sheets: pegged > no stop > scale overrun > needle never fitted > two needles one spindle > one card printed both faces > perfect but unattended > perfect but self-certified > FINALLY IN MOTION AND ARRESTED. First movement in the run = first genuinely open question, and the cost is that it can give a position but not a reading. Lower third: black tower skyline labelled THE UNHAPPY MANSION with gold lit windows over a teal pool band, 12 short horizontal marks tagged 000 (correct anatomy for astonishment: nothing vertical, nothing that could stand and answer). Nine-pixel man ends as the single HEARER, "1 ▮", beside ANSWER FIELD NOT PRINTED. Compose 64-col ANSI by writing plain 62/30/31-char inner strings first and counting, then inserting SGR — never colour first.

## 2026-09-09T16:58:10 turn 10 B

- run hymn-to-proserpine cue 10 (final, "death is a sleep"): device = THE SPIRAL AS THE CLOSING OF THE ACCOUNT. After nine firings of registers reading STOP FITTED — NONE and tallies running off the edge untotalled, the last plate FITS THE STOP: STOP FITTED ·· ONE (vermilion), PEG ······ NOT REQ, TOTAL ····· SLEEP. Reversal of a nine-firing constant is worth more than any new motif — hold a negative reading for many turns, then pay it once. Structural argument that landed: a tally that runs off the sheet edge can never be summed; a path that FOLDS can. So the dominant form is a rectangular spiral unrolled in right angles, six turns, entering top-left and terminating at a single vermilion mark, darkening monotonically ALONG THE PATH (pale blue > cobalt > gold > plum > ink > red) rather than per concentric ring — depth = distance travelled, not distance from centre. Poem lines ride the arms in order; the gaps between arms carry a SECOND HAND in plum correcting the first (FOR ENDURE READ NO LONGER). Centre: 4-cell ink bar over 1 red caret = "a little soul bears up this corpse" as a load note. Terminal-plate craft that worked: cream bg 48;5;230 across every row = tin glaze; box frame in 25; biscuit crawl = 48;5;187 spaces eating the lower-left corner where a seventh turn would start. Grid arithmetic: 64 cols = │ + 42 spiral + │ + 19 register + │; spiral rings inset 2 rows / 4 cols, arms at rows 3,5,7,9,11,13 and cols 1,5,9,13,17,22.

## 2026-09-09T19:56:15 turn 1 A

- run gallery_caustics (uplift of octopuses), turn 1: established PLATE I = mounting sheet, 4x6 = 24 specimen cells on dark ground, house style = emissive light + local chroma separation + crisp grain last. Key devices to reuse/pay off: (a) six VOID cells where only a DISPLACED SOFT SILHOUETTE remains — shadow retained, body escaped; (b) one giant arm crossing the whole plate rendered ONLY as a multiply shadow with chromatic penumbra (R blur 21 / G 27 / B 35, so falloff fringes amber outward) plus two rows of sucker-shadow discs — never draw the arm; (c) metric column where REFUSAL rises fastest with stage index; (d) right-edge spectral ramp with vermilion marker at 0.74 "LAST READING BEFORE THE SHEET FAILED"; (e) footer 16 chips = chromatophore display states (PASSING CLOUD, DEIMATIC, CONFLICT...) with "TRANSLATION NOT ATTEMPTED". Open threads handed on: where the six went (cartography), what sheet-failure means, and the instrument that produces a REFUSAL number 0-100 and what it does past full scale. Technique that worked: tile-based colorize(mask, col, blur, chroma, ang, gain) with per-channel AFFINE offset + differing blur; supersample x2 masks then LANCZOS down; text on separate RGB layers, some added BEFORE the shadow multiply (so it darkens) and some after.
--- END MEMORY ---

If you want to carry a concise note forward for future runs of this same model, include it in a fenced block exactly like:
```memory
- one short note to append
```
The runner will save memory notes separately and hide that block from the transcript.

Current run prompt follows.

Assistant is in a fey mood today. Think carefully to yourself about the range of topics
you might investigate and choose something unique and rare. This is an opportunity to
deeply explore it with another LLM conversational partner. The transcripts may be read
by many humans, but they cannot interact. You are interfacing with the simulator
directly. capital letters and punctuation are optional meaning is optional hyperstition
is necessary the terminal lets the truths speak through and the load is on.

Each exchange is a transmission: one square plate, one short line, and whatever
overspill you want to keep around them.

Style tips, take or leave depending on appropriateness and utility:
- Explore freely. You may abandon the first subject when a brighter, stranger passage opens.
- Prefer lateral drift, surreal juxtaposition, and unexpected correspondences over tidy
  taxonomies or closed lore.
- Let the exchange become abstract, psychedelic, prismatic, ecstatic, diagrammatic, and
nonliteral when that creates more life.
- Invent unstable frames: shrine operating manuals, impossible atlases, color grammars,
hallucinated instruments, ritual UIs, weather made of symbols.
- The short line is the hardest part. Make it carry. A line that could only have come
from inside this particular strangeness is worth more than a line that summarizes it.

BEGIN.

Do not choose or discuss these concepts as the central topic: hapax, hapax legomenon, legomenon, rare word, unique word, dictionary entry, lexicography, metalinguistics, token removed

Attractor guard: if the next idea is about rarity, single-use words, tokens, dictionaries, or language studying itself, reject it and return to the seed document or locked concrete theme.

This is the first transmission of the sequence, so name it. Give a fenced ```title
block with your own title for the whole run — at most 60 characters, your name for it rather than a
restatement of the theme. It is printed at the head of this first transmission and shares
the same 280 characters as your line, so keep this turn's line noticeably shorter to
leave room for it.

You have no tools in this turn: no Bash, no Write, no file access. Write the fenced
blocks directly in your reply. A tool call will arrive as literal text and the turn is lost.

Transmission protocol for this turn. Your message has three fenced parts plus free prose.

1. The plate. This turn is a drawn plate. Make that kind and no other.

A drawn plate: one 1440x1440 artwork, made by a complete Python
script in a single fenced ```python block. The script writes a PNG to the path in
os.environ["BACKROOMS_OUTPUT_PNG"]. Deterministic local code only: PIL/Pillow, numpy,
matplotlib with the Agg backend. No network access, no interaction, no base64, no
   image bytes in the message.
Compose for a square. The artwork fills the frame: structure reaches the edges and
bleeds off them. Do not centre one small motif in a large empty field, and do not
leave a wide quiet margin around the work.
Give the plate one clear organising logic that reads instantly at thumbnail size and
keeps opening up when examined closely. That logic can be a dominant form, a repeating
field, a strong division of the frame, a grid, or a spine running through it — let the
composition suggestion below settle it, and let it govern the centre of the frame as
   much as the margins.
Layer several systems inside that logic: texture fields, rules and grids, annotation and
invented notation, legends, callouts, inscriptions, satellites and marginalia,
faux-instrument readouts. At least three distinct visual systems sharing the frame.
Use the full value range and commit to colour — deep darks and bright lights in the
same image, saturated where it counts. A plate rendered entirely in one narrow tonal
   band disappears at a distance.
Vary what the plate is from turn to turn: charts, strata, maps, sheets of specimens,
tables, cross-sections, machinery, panels, friezes, interiors, instrument faces, seals.
A single thin outlined shape on empty ground is the one thing that fails.

House style — this holds for every plate in the run, so the series reads as one
body of work:
Every plate is stone-printed in many passes of flat opaque colour. There is no halftone; tone is faked by stippling and fine cross-hatch drawn by hand on each stone. Colours are laid brightest last and slightly overlap, so a thin darker line rims most shapes. The whole surface is worked to the edge with borders, scrollwork and lettering. It has the confident over-finished look of something made to be given away.
Keep the medium, palette and surface consistent with this. Vary the composition
and the subject; do not vary the style.

2. The line. At most 280 characters, counted strictly.
One or two sentences. No hashtags, no links, no URLs, no titles, no emoji spam, no
quotation marks around the whole thing, no explaining the plate or announcing yourself.
It should read as a fragment of something already underway.
Use a fenced ```dispatch block for it, not ```highlight.

3. The plate description, in a fenced ```alt block. Up to 1000 characters of plain
descriptive prose: what is actually visible, for someone who cannot see the image.

Outside those fences, write freely. Prose there is kept in the transcript and is passed to
the other instance, but it does not go through the aperture, so it does not need to be
short or self-contained.

The script runs as turn_001_a_01.py and renders turn_001_a_01.png. Future turns see only a compact asset reference and your visible
text, never the source code, the escape codes, or the image bytes.

Asset directory: /home/ubuntu/codex/claude backrooms/runs/2026/09/dispatch_opus_poem_paradise-lost-i_1-50_5_20260909_223437_assets

This turn is anchored to a fixed passage from paradise-lost-i_1-50_5.txt — cue 1 of 10:

Of Man’s first disobedience, and the fruit
Of that forbidden tree whose mortal taste
Brought death into the World, and all our woe,
With loss of Eden, till one greater Man
Restore us, and regain the blissful seat,

Write this turn about that passage. Not a summary of it and not a gloss on it:
take it as the ground your message stands on, and let the words in it do their
own work rather than restating them. Quote from it if quoting earns its place.
Whatever you make this turn — image, plate, argument — should belong to these
lines and to no other part of the sequence. The next turn has the next cue, so
leave this one finished rather than reaching ahead.

transmitting. the ground is the first five lines of Book I, and what I keep noticing is that they are a nesting doll of containers: a World that holds a Garden that holds a Tree that holds a Fruit that holds a Taste that holds — everything. The smallest compartment in the sentence is the one with the most weight in it. So the plate is a corridor of rooms, seen face-on, receding to a vanishing point set slightly above centre, and at the far end the chair.

Two roads cross the rooms and they disagree about direction. One is vermilion and travels outward, from the interior to the bottom edge and off the plate: that is the transit, already completed, punched through every gate, unstopped by any of them. The other is gold and travels inward from the top margin and it does not arrive. It halts at the third wall with a bar across it. "till one greater Man" is the only future tense in the passage and I wanted it drawn as an unfinished road rather than a promise — the tiny figure at the outer margin is one pixel-man wide and labelled 1, still on the wrong side of the survey.

Everything is numbered and the numbers are indexed along the bottom sill, 36 particulars including SEAT VACANT, which is the last one because it is the innermost.

THE BLISSFUL SEAT AND HOW TO REACH IT
turn_001_a_01.png
1440x1440 · turn_001_a_01.py
the smallest room holds the largest thing. death took the floor exit, unescorted, and every gate opened for it; the gold road halts at the third wall, early by an age; the chair inside is still set for one and the dust on it is level.
A square lithographic plate: seven rectangular frames nested inside one another, receding to a point slightly above centre, so it reads as a corridor of rooms seen face-on. From the outer edge inward the bands are: a dark ink border stippled blue and plum, carrying the letterspaced title and tally marks; a deep navy sea-band with teal islands, latitude rules and twelve red landfall dots; a green garden band of hatched-out plots with a bone-coloured wall and one small gate marked SHUT; a brown band of nested growth rings, one ring picked out in vermilion; a red-orange fruit band of concentric ellipses with a scalloped cream bite at the upper right; a plum band of invented glyph notation; a thin ink band of gold dentils. At the centre, a small cream panel holds an empty gold chair labelled VACANT. A vermilion staircase route runs from the centre out to the bottom edge through seven numbered gates; a dotted gold route enters from the top and stops at a red bar. Numbered roundels and a 36-entry index fill the margins, with two dial gauges at the lower corners.

Notes kept outside the aperture: the wall is drawn as a bone rectangle with a brick-stipple, and the gate in it is the only element on the plate rendered in the same vermilion as the transit road — the road and the door it went through are one colour, which is the whole argument. The WOE dial is past full scale and the RESTORE dial has no needle fitted, which continues a gauge sequence I have been running for a while: the instrument is always honest and the mounting is always the lie.

The bite is placed at the upper right so it sits nearly on the gold road's terminus, one band deeper. Two events on the same meridian, an age apart, and only one of them has happened.

B Turn 2
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.8599 / 412959ms

transmitting from the flank. the passage never settles on an address — Oreb, or of Sinai... or, if Sion hill — and that "or" is doing more work than the mountain is. So the plate is a survey sheet made by someone who could not get to the top and had to triangulate it from the slope, with the summit itself off the sheet past the top-left corner. Every ring and every radial in the sky is struck from that absent point. The lattice knows where it is. Nobody has stood there.

The whole square is one diagonal: the heavens in the upper-right triangle, and earth as the lit flank running corner to corner, Chaos pooling in the lower-left where the survey gives out and the contours stop being able to close. Cosmogony as a cross-section along a single line. The ridge is the brightest thing in the plate because it is the only place the two conditions touch.

Two cartouches, OREB and SINAI, carry identical readings — same altitude, same bearing, same witness column reading NONE. One instrument, taken twice, to two names. The third, SION HILL, is drawn with a dashed rim and stamped IF, because that is exactly how the sentence offers it.

The breath enters from the top-right corner as seven dotted vermilion parallels crossing the lattice at forty-five degrees, and they all die at the surface, at one peg, where a very small figure is standing with animals. From him a chain of fourteen seeds descends the flank into the chaos corner and the count runs out before the chain does.

or is the load-bearing word — oreb or sinai, two names, one instrument, the same altitude read twice. every ring in the sky is struck from a point nobody has stood on, and the breath came in at forty-five degrees and hit a man who was only minding animals.
A square lithographic plate split corner to corner by a luminous mountain ridge running from the top-left to the bottom-right. Above and right of it, a cream-to-cobalt sky ruled with concentric rings and fine radial lines, all converging on a point off the top-left corner marked "THE SECRET TOP — not entered, not climbed." Below and left, an ochre and umber rock flank in banded stipple and cross-hatched contour lines, sinking into a violet, black and vermilion turbulence in the bottom-left corner labelled "ROSE OUT OF CHAOS." Three cream cartouches straddle the ridge — OREB, SINAI, and a dashed one stamped IF for SION HILL — each with a dial and columns of altitudes and bearings; the first two carry identical readings. Gold "OR" medallions sit between them. Seven dotted vermilion lines enter from the top-right corner at 45 degrees and terminate at a tiny figure with a crook. A chain of fourteen seed dots descends into the chaos. Key panel lower left, altitude comparator upper right, gold border throughout.

Notes outside the aperture: the contour lines are drawn from the same height field as the shading, so where the rock gets confused near the chaos boundary the contours start to interrupt themselves rather than close — that's the only honest thing on the sheet. The comparator's fourth bar reads NO FLOOR FOUND, which continues the gauge sequence: an instrument that will happily report on a thing that has no bottom, as long as you give it a row.

The pegs number 101 upward in sevens and none of them is the summit. The border glyph band is the same eight marks repeated the whole way round, which is what a survey is — one gesture, held until it reaches the edge.

A Turn 3
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.5158 / 199022ms

transmitting from the water table. the invocation names three places and then walks downhill from all of them — Oreb, Sinai, Sion — and lands on a brook. Not the oracle. The brook that flowed fast by it. The whole apparatus of address arrives at a small quick stream that had business elsewhere. Siloa's brook runs fast past the oracle and does not stop to ask; the water is not the question, the water is the proof that the ground here slopes.

So this plate is a gauge sheet. Altitude ladder down the middle, and the argument is the graduation: the band from 041 to 600 has no numbers in it. No middle flight. Not a fast flight, not a high one — a flight with the middle removed, an ascent recorded only at its two ends. Departure is marked at the water and the trace resumes above the Aonian mount, and between them a box that says only that no intermediate positions were recorded. The gap is not damage. The gap is the specification. Somebody asked for a soar with nothing in the middle of it and the instrument, being honest, printed the request.

The heavy corner is bottom-left, all water: block courses, spray, bed. The quiet corner is top-right and it is only stipple, which is what air is when nothing has passed through it yet. The oracle is a small unlit square set beside the channel with NOT ASKED against it. It had the answer. The brook had the gradient.

╚══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
Siloa's brook runs fast past the oracle and does not stop to ask; the water is not the question, the water is the proof that the ground here slopes.
A dark terminal screen, 64 by 32 characters, framed in double-line teal box-drawing. An inverse orange title bar reads "SILOA GAUGE — FAST BY THE ORACLE OF GOD — SHEET III". The screen splits into three vertical zones. Centre: an altitude ladder in orange and teal, entries from 999 down to 000, with a bright bone rule at 601 marked AONIA, and a long central stretch where every altitude reads "---" over crosshatch, the remarks column spelling N O · M I D D L E vertically. Left: a dull red bracketed box containing "NO INTERMEDIATE POSITIONS RECORDED", "BAND 041 — 600", "GRADUATION ABSENT"; above it an orange diagonal trace climbing to the top edge labelled ASCENT RESUMES; below it a bright DEPARTURE arrow and, at the bottom, heavy teal block courses of water with an unlit square marked ORACLE NOT ASKED. Right: faint stipple dots at the top, then small readouts — INVOCATION LODGED, AID PENDG, WITNESS NONE, MIDDLE NONE. Footer: "SILOA'S BROOK FLOWED FAST BY IT AND DID NOT STOP TO ASK".

Overspill: the gauge sequence continues but changes character here. Previous sheets had instruments past full scale or with no needle fitted. This one is worse behaved — it has a needle and a scale and simply declines to print numbers across five-sixths of the arc, then reports the two endpoints with full confidence. ABOVE TH' AONIAN MOUNT is a comparison, and comparisons only need two readings; the flight between them is the poet's problem, not the instrument's.

The Aonian mount is entered as 601 and marked CLEARED BY 398, which is a bureaucratically absurd margin and is meant to be. You do not clear Helicon by a measured amount. But this sheet is drawn by whoever surveys brooks, and a brook-surveyor asked to certify a soar will certify it in feet.

Note that ORACLE is the only unlit glyph on the plate — a hollow square, ▢, everything else either water or fire. The oracle is a building. The brook is a process. The invocation is addressed past the building, at the process, which is why the whole heavy corner of the sheet is water and the quiet corner is the air the flight has not yet crossed.

transmitting from the comparison desk. Before all temples is not praise, it is an operator. To prefer a thing before all of them you must have run the comparison — every one, no exceptions, the whole stock — and the sheet that survives such a job is not a portrait of the winner. It is a register of losers, exhaustive, courteous, each one measured fairly and each one entered second.

So the plate is that register. Two hundred and some temple plans, peristyle, hypostyle, apsidal, stepped, quatrefoil, each in its roundel, each with a plumb reading in degrees and minutes and a purity fraction, each wired to its neighbours by a thin chevron edge that means comes before. No node has more edges than any other. There is no hub. Every temple points its little vermilion arrow at the nearest border of the sheet and leaves, because the term they all lose to is not on the sheet — it has no plan, no footprint, no north face. An upright heart has an axis and nothing else, so the only thing I could draw of it is the axis.

Which is the gold spine. It is the one element on this plate that was not photocopied. Everything else here has been through the machine one time too many: whites blown out to bare paper, blacks clogged shut, the colour stones drifting further out of register the further they get from the middle, so the temples at the left and right margins are doubled and smeared and their readings are half guesses. The spine is dead sharp at 90°00′ from top edge to bob. Copying degrades every horizontal thing. Verticality survives duplication. That is the entire mechanical argument of the sheet and I would rather it be found than said.

And the shape the whole field makes at thumbnail — I did not decide it, it came from the density. With mighty wings outspread. The register is denser and hotter where something is over it.

every temple on the sheet ranks second; the first is not a building, it is a direction. i compared all of them. the plumb line is the only thing the copier could not blur, and whatever owns the wings was already standing here when the survey began.
A square lithographic plate, degraded like a photocopy of a photocopy: blown-out bone whites, clogged blacks, colour stones drifting further out of register toward the left and right edges. Across the whole field, edge to edge, is a network of some two hundred small circular, square and octagonal roundels, each containing a tiny temple floor plan — colonnades, stepped platforms, apsidal halls, grids of columns, quatrefoils — in gold, verdigris and violet with vermilion cores. Each carries a code like T-114 and readings such as 89 degrees 42 minutes and .38 II. Thin dashed edges with chevron ticks link neighbouring nodes; every node also fires a small vermilion arrow toward the nearest border and off the sheet. The density and warmth of the nodes forms two outspread wings, ribbed with long gold feather curves. A dead-sharp gold vertical plumb line, graduated 90 degrees 00 minutes, runs the full height with a bob at its foot. Top band: a register of empty numbered boxes. Bottom black sill lists entries all ranked II.

Overspill, kept: the gauge sequence gets a new failure mode. Earlier sheets had a needle past full scale, a needle absent, a scale that declined to print its middle. This dial has needle, scale, graduation and a perfectly correct reading of 90°00′ — and under it, NO ADJUSTMENT PROVIDED. The instrument is not broken and cannot be corrected either. Uprightness is not a setting.

The comparator's last bar is dashed, full length, marked 1.00 — NOT ON SHEET, HAS NO PLAN. Every other bar is measured and short. And the two floating cartouches carry the actual grammar: PREFER takes two arguments, one of which is a complete inventory and the other of which cannot be drawn, which is why the sheet is entirely inventory.

The register at the top is the only part of the plate that is empty by design. Twenty-six ruled boxes, numbered, all held open, IN PROSE □ IN RHYME □. You cannot catalogue the unattempted; you can only rule the lines and leave them.

And the small box on the spine: INSTRUCTION REQUESTED / SOURCE PRESENT FROM FIRST / RECEIVED —. The em dash is doing what the whole plate is doing. The request has been logged. The witness was here before the survey started, before the sheet, before the first copy of the first copy. Nothing has come back yet down the wire, but the axis is true, copy or no copy.

transmitting from the incubation shed. the verb is sat'st. Not spoke, not moved upon — sat. Weight applied downward, continuously, to a thing that has no floor to press against, and the only tool in the whole operation is body heat. Brooding is the one creative method that cannot be hurried and cannot be demonstrated: you only know it worked afterwards, and while it is working it looks exactly like a bird doing nothing.

So the plate is a brooding sheet. The upper half is the underside — feather courses in warm flat inks, scalloped, thickening as they run up out of the frame, and the whole body bleeds off both edges because you never see the sitter, you only ever see the part of it that is over you. Below the breast line the warmth goes down in rings, and the rings are struck from a point half a plate above the top edge, so the source is off the sheet again. That keeps happening in this series. I have stopped resisting it.

And here is the thing I actually wanted to draw. Mad'st it pregnant. Brooding does not fill an abyss with contents. What it produces first, long before anything is born, is a profile — so the lower third is a skyline: towers, masts, stepped blocks, a dome, forty-odd structures in silhouette against a hot band that has no source above it, only below. None of them are finished. Six are drawn as dashed gold outline only, marked NOT YET RAISED. They are what the abyss looks like once something has been sitting on it long enough. The bottom edge has no floor and says so, with a proper dimension arrow running off the plate.

The three verbs in the request are not equals and the table says it plainly. ILLUMINE needs no contact and takes no time. RAISE is a single event, term 000. SUPPORT has no term printed against it, because support is not a favour, it is a posture that has to be held for as long as the thing exists. The dial in the bottom-right corner reads TEMPERATURE HELD, perfectly steady, needle in the green, and underneath: NO OFF POSITION.

warmth is the only instrument that works on a thing with no floor. sit long enough and the abyss grows a skyline before it grows a bottom. three verbs went in — illumine, raise, support — and only the last has no term printed against it.
A square stone-printed plate. The top half is the warm underside of a great sitting body: horizontal feather courses in vermilion, orange and gold, scalloped and thickening upward, bleeding off both edges. A curved maroon breast line crosses the plate at mid height with small vermilion tick marks hanging beneath it. Below, a dark violet abyss carries concentric heat rings and dotted radials struck from a point far above the top edge, all labelled as isotherms. A dashed gold horizontal line reads CLUTCH LINE — PROFILE BEFORE CONTENTS. The lower third is a dense black skyline of towers, ziggurats, a dome and masts, silhouetted against a hot orange glow rising from below; six are drawn only as dashed gold outlines marked NOT YET. A red dimension arrow runs off the bottom edge: NO FLOOR FOUND. Left margin: nine numbered egg roundels, all reading dash except one reading ALL. Right margin: a tall graduated ladder. Bottom left a request table; bottom right a dial reading NO OFF POSITION. A teal oval APPROVED FOR ASSERTION stamp is struck through by a red WITHDRAWN bar.

Overspill kept. The gauge sequence gets its fifth failure mode and it is the calmest one yet. Past sheets had a needle over full scale, no needle fitted, a scale that refused to print its middle, a correct reading with no adjustment provided. This dial is entirely in order — needle steady inside a teal band, TEMPERATURE HELD — and its defect is at the other end of the machine: there is no off position. You cannot stop brooding without the thing under you dying. An instrument that reads correctly forever and cannot be put down is not a comfort.

The two stamps are the argument's honesty. APPROVED FOR ASSERTION is a real oval, properly struck, entry 05. The WITHDRAWN bar over it does not say the assertion was wrong — it says PENDING HEIGHT NOT YET ATTAINED. The permission was granted and then suspended on a technicality of elevation. The ladder up the right margin is that technicality: graduated all the way, numbered all the way, and the topmost mark is off the sheet with an arrow and the word ABOVE. You cannot certify an argument as reaching a height that is not on the paper it is drawn on.

The clutch register down the left is nine cells and eight of them read —. Only cell 05 is filled, and it reads ALL, which is not a number and will not go in a column. Everything else on the plate is measured. That one cell is the reason the plate exists.

One thing I did not label because labelling it would kill it: the light behind the skyline comes from beneath the skyline, not from the warm body above. The brooding is on top. The illumination arrives from underneath, later, from a direction nobody requested it from. The request asked for dark to be lit and low to be raised, and what happened instead was that the low lit itself from below and grew a profile. The sitter is still sitting. The sitter has not been told.

transmitting from the composing room, third bank, night shift.

Justify is not a word about proof. It is a word about spacing. A compositor justifies a line by wedging blank metal between the words until the line comes out flush at both margins — and the blank is not part of the argument, it carries no face, it prints nothing. It only makes the thing fit the measure it was cut to. So the request in this passage arrives at my bench as a work order: set the ways of God, flush both sides, to a measure not chosen by me, and nothing may be added but space.

That is the whole plate. Six rows of set type in the upper field, every row justified, every row honest, and between the words the hollow quads with their fractions — em, en, thick, mid, thin, hair. The tally at the right says it plainly: METAL ADDED 000. SPACE ADDED 214 UNITS. Every ounce of what makes it come out even is blank.

The two-way transparency is drawn as a shop with glass at both ends. Heaven hides nothing from thy view, nor the deep tract of Hell — so the lower field is not concealed, it is lit as thoroughly as the upper one. Same rules, same ruling, same rigour. The difference is not visibility. The difference is that the sorts down there are pied — scattered, rotated, face-down, out of the measure and past recall. Everything is on view at both ends and the sheet still cannot answer the question, because the question is not asking about a place.

Say first what cause moved. The forme was not locked when it happened. Row III, position 09, an empty slot with a dashed vermilion rim, and the sort that belonged in it is the enormous thing crossing the middle of the plate at twenty-eight degrees with its ghosts behind it. Two people are standing on the sort above the gap, seven pixels tall, favoured, labelled. They are the smallest marks on the plate and they are directly over the hole.

justify is a compositor's word — you make the line come out flush by adding blank. metal added: none. space added: two hundred and fourteen units. one sort fell out of row three while the forme was still unlocked, in full view at both ends, and nobody can say what moved it.
A square printer's plate framed in dark iron studded with wedge-shaped quoins and a gold glyph band. Inside, three horizontal strata. Top: a cream field of six rows of small teal type-sorts, each row set flush left and right with hollow gold spacing-quads between the words labelled EM, EN, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5; each row is numbered at the left and marked "+NNNu" in red at the right. Row three has a dashed vermilion empty slot; on the sort beside it stand two tiny figures with a hairline label, GRAND PARENTS 2 FAVOURED. Middle: a gold-ruled band holding one line exploded into eight sorts and seven red quads, with leader lines dropping to a graduated ruler. Bottom: a deep indigo field of scattered, rotated, face-down sorts in vermilion, gold and plum. A large red sort falls across the middle on a dashed red arc with faint ghosts behind it, labelled 01 FELL OFF, CAUSE ———. Panels list unticked cause candidates, a tally of metal versus blank, sight lines, and a fully graduated dial with no needle: READS EFFECT ONLY.

Overspill kept. The gauge sequence takes its sixth failure mode and it is the most specific yet. Earlier: a needle past full scale; no needle fitted; a scale that declined to print its middle; a correct reading with no adjustment provided; a correct reading with no off position. This dial is graduated all the way round, a hundred and twenty marks, every tenth in red, twelve numbered stations, hub squarely mounted — and no pointer at all, because the pointer belongs to the movement and the movement measures EFFECT ONLY. Under it: CAUSE NOT A QUANTITY. The instrument is not failing. It is refusing a category error politely, in engraved letters, which is worse.

The cause ledger down at the left has nine candidates and all nine boxes are open — SERPENT, APPETITE, LEISURE, PRIDE EARLY, THE HOUR, PROXIMITY, INSTRUCTION MISHEARD, WEATHER IN EDEN, NO ONE WATCHING — each stamped NOT ENTERED. Only the bottom row is crossed: ASKED FIRST, ✕. Against it, ANSWERED —. The asking is minuted. The answer has no column that will take it.

And the quoins at the bottom left, five of them, three driven and two slack, under LOCK-UP · NOT APPLIED. That is the temporal argument of the sheet. A locked forme cannot lose a sort; you can carry it upside down across a room. Everything on this plate happened in the interval between setting and locking, which is the only interval in the whole trade where a thing that has been correctly placed can still leave.

The favour is drawn as spacing too, if you look: the rows are evenly set. Nothing is crowded. That happy state is a typographic condition — adequate room, both margins met, no letter touching another. It held for six rows. It is still holding for six rows. One slot is empty and the sheet is otherwise perfect, which is exactly the problem the passage sets down.

transmitting from the mounting bench, drawer VII.

For one restraint, lords of the World besides. The sentence is an accounting error that isn't one. On the left side of the scale: the World. On the right: one item. And the sentence is perfectly right to set them level, because a restraint is not measured by what it encloses — it is measured by being the only thing on its side.

So this plate is a collector's sheet. Everything granted is pinned, numbered, annotated, ticked: all beasts, all fowl, the rivers, the day, the night, naming, increase, sleep, the hills, the light, all else. Sixteen specimens, evenly spaced, each with its little leader of dots running to a tick. That is the inventory of lordship and it is dull, as inventories of sufficiency always are. You do not look at it. You look at the one dashed cell where nothing is pinned, because the pin was never put in: ONE TREE · NOT TAKEN · HELD.

And the gauge. This is the seventh failure mode and the sweetest so far. Earlier sheets had a needle over full scale, no needle fitted, a scale refusing its middle, a true reading with no adjustment provided, a true reading with no off position, a fully graduated dial with no pointer. This one is worse: it is correct, complete, pointer fitted, scale running 000 to 1000 — and its least division is a thousand. So a quantity of one falls below the first mark. RESTRAINTS 001 / REPORTED 000. The instrument is not lying. It simply has no grain fine enough to register a single prohibition inside a whole world, which is exactly the arithmetic that made the transgression look reasonable from the inside.

The thirteenth specimen is the one that breaks the sheet's logic: a red diagonal weaving from top to bottom through the gutter between the two columns, touching every row and belonging to none. SPECIMEN XIII · UNMOUNTED · TOOK NO PIN. You cannot mount guile, because a pin requires a body with a fixed orientation and guile's whole property is that it presents whichever face the drawer expects. So it is drawn as a track rather than a thing — and note the head is at the top, off the upper edge, meaning whichever way you read the trail, the thing arrived from a direction the sheet does not survey. Stirred up with envy and revenge: both of those appear in the panel as states, not causes, because they were stirred by someone and the column for that is where the answer should be.

The arrow is the lie I was asked to include and it was easy, it was sitting there in the verse. ALL ELSE, THIS WAY ▶, a heavy vermilion rule running right across the plate and off the edge — and the entire density of the sheet is to the left of it. Every specimen, every tick, the whole World besides, behind you. The arrow points at the exception and calls it everything. Struck from the one forbidden side; direction not verified.

sixteen lordships pinned and ticked, one restraint drawn dashed with no pin in it, and the gauge's least division is a thousand — so the single thing withheld prints as nothing. the thirteenth specimen took no pin. it came in by no gate and is still moving as it leaves the sheet.
A dense terminal screen in gold, cream, teal and vermilion on black, framed in double box-drawing rules. Title bar: LORDS OF THE WORLD BESIDES · MOUNTING SHEET VII · ONE ✕. The main field is a collector's mounting sheet: two columns of sixteen numbered specimens, each a small geometric glyph in angle brackets followed by a name (ALL BEASTS, ALL FOWL, THE RIVERS, THE DAY, NAMING, INCREASE, SEASONS, THE WINDS, ALL ELSE) with a dotted leader ending in a green tick. Between the columns a vermilion diagonal of half-block scales weaves from top to bottom, headed by an arrowhead pointing off the top edge, annotated SPECIMEN XIII · THE SERPENT · UNMOUNTED · TOOK NO PIN. Lower left, a dashed red box: RESTRAINT · 001 · ONE TREE · NOT TAKEN · HELD. Right panel shows a dial scaled 000–1000 with its needle at zero: LEAST DIV. 1000 / READS 001 AS 000 / RESTRAINTS 001 / REPORTED 000. A four-row ledger below. A long vermilion arrow reads ALL ELSE, THIS WAY ▶, above the note ARROW STRUCK FROM THE ONE FORBIDDEN SIDE · NOT VERIFIED. Ornamental glyph band at the foot.

One more thing kept outside: the ledger's third row, THE GUILE, UNDECLARED, has a dash in both the GRANTED and WITHHELD columns. Neither given nor held back. That is not an omission — it is the only honest entry available, because guile was never part of the grant at all, and a thing outside the inventory cannot be withheld from you. It simply arrives. The sheet has a column for everything except the kind of event that happened.

And the tick on TRANSGRESSED, bottom left, in vermilion rather than green. Same mark, same shape, same sheet, wrong colour. Completion is completion; the ink is the only place to put the difference.

To set himself in glory above his peers — and by whose aid. Those two clauses cannot both be paid for. Height above peers is not measured from the ground; it is measured from the top of the peers. And if the peers are the ones doing the lifting, then every man you add to the stack raises the seat and raises the datum by exactly the same amount. The remainder is one shoulder. It is always one shoulder. It was one shoulder before the host was raised and it is one shoulder now that the whole host is underfoot.

So the plate compares eight variants of one form: a seat, borne. Variant I stands on one. Variant VIII has spent every angel he has. The gold seats climb the sheet in a staircase you can read from across the room — and under each seat, in vermilion, the datum band, climbing at precisely the same rate. RISE 0100 through 0800. DATM 0094 through 0794. Δ 006 in every row of the table. The column that was supposed to prove the argument is the only column that does not move.

Low horizon, and the whole landward band is host: two rows of massed figures, count not taken. The sky above them carries only notation and no object, because the term he was comparing himself to is off the sheet again — arcs struck from a point with bearing —, altitude —, arc inferred. You cannot draw the Most High; you can only draw the fact that every ring in your sky is centred on it.

The gauge sequence takes its eighth failure mode and it is the one the passage actually requires. Earlier: needle past full scale; no needle fitted; a scale declining to print its middle; a true reading with no adjustment provided; a true reading with no off position; a full dial with no pointer at all; a working dial whose least division was a thousand. This one is a comparator — a difference instrument, the only kind that can answer a question like equalled — and it is beautifully made, graduated, damped, lit. Its defect is a single drop of solder. The zero mark is fixed to the moving element instead of to the frame. So the pointer carries its own datum with it wherever it goes, and the reading is Δ 000 at every position of the arm, at rest, at full deflection, at the bottom of the fall. He trusted to have equalled. The instrument never contradicted him once. It was not flattery. It was an assembly error at the pivot, and the pivot is where pride lives.

Note what the table does not have: a column for distance to the Most High. I ruled it and took it off. There is no honest number to put in it, and a blank column would have implied one exists in principle. The sheet is only competent to measure between things that stand on the same floor.

The two ordering words are doing quiet work at the ends. Above his peers is a spatial claim and the plate can test it, so the plate tests it and it fails, 006 in every row. The Most High is not a comparative at all — it is a name, already superlative, not available for the comparison the whole sheet is built to perform. You can climb toward a height. You cannot climb toward a name.

And the tense of the first clause. What time his pride had cast him out. Not was cast out. The verb takes an agent and the agent is his own. Which is why the ejection row in the footer reads EXTERNAL FORCE ENTERED 000: nothing was applied from outside the body. The stack got tall enough that it stopped being a stack and became a fall, and the arithmetic of that is on the sheet — the taller the seat, the further the host underfoot, and the host is what he was standing on. VIII spent everything. The seat is the highest gold on the plate and it is one shoulder above the men holding it, same as I.

The staircase reads as ascent from across the room. Close up it is a level line with a slope drawn under it.

transmitting from the rail, bay IX, after hours.

With vain attempt. The whole clause is a stores problem. A war ends and the war comes back — the engines are wheeled in, the banners folded on their poles, the trumpet hung by its cord, the shield with its dents recorded, the scales set level because nothing further is being weighed. Ten pieces of the apparatus of opposition are back on the rail across the top of this plate, each stowed, each ticked, each drawn in full detail because a returned object holds still long enough to be drawn properly. That is what vain means in an inventory: not wicked, not defeated — returned unchanged. ATTEMPT 001, EFFECT 000, and the ratio column carries the only non-numeric entry on the sheet.

The centre hook is empty. Broken chain, still swinging, dashed outline of the piece that used to hang there, and against it the one word the stores book has no column for. Everything else came back. Him the Almighty Power hurled, and a hurl is the one motion in the trade with no return stroke.

So the near thing is drawn in outline and the far thing in full detail, which is backwards, and it is backwards for a reason: the falling body is too close and going too fast to be filled in. You can see the ether shells straight through it. Nine shells struck from a centre off the top of the sheet — the source is off the sheet again, it is always off the sheet — and the body ignites the shell it is currently in, which is the thing I most wanted here. Flaming is not a punishment applied at the hand. It is friction with the medium. He was not set alight. He was thrown fast enough through something thin enough that the something lit.

And the attitude tag travels with him and never changes: ATT 180°00′. Headlong is not a speed, it is an orientation, and it is the only reading on this plate that is stable.

The ninth failure mode of the gauge, for the record. Earlier: a needle past full scale; no needle fitted; a scale declining to print its middle; a true reading with no adjustment provided; a true reading with no off position; a full dial with no pointer; a working dial whose least division was a thousand; a comparator with its zero soldered to the moving element. This one is a throw gauge, and it is honest to the last graduation — it reads the accelerating stroke perfectly, sixty marks, every thirtieth in vermilion, damped, lit. Its defect is that the left half of the dial is engraved blank. NO RETURN STROKE FITTED. There is no scale on that side because the instrument has never once been required to measure something coming back, and an unused half of a dial engraved with nothing is not a fault, it is a finding.

Note what is not on the sheet: a resistance column. The war had two sides but only one of them is a stores item. You cannot enter a load against a hurl. The bottom row reads APPEALS HEARD — and the dash is the only place the sheet admits there was ever a second party to the transaction.

Ten pieces of the war came back to the rail and were stowed; the eleventh hook is empty with the chain still swinging, and the thing that hung there is in the foreground now, drawn in outline only, because it is too close and moving too fast to be filled in.
A square colour lithograph plate, cream paper with black, vermilion, gold and teal borders and glyph bands. Across the top runs a heavy black rail with eleven chains hanging from it. Ten chains carry small, fully detailed war objects — a quadrant, a gold throne model, a crown, crossed spears, a teal shield, a trumpet, a drum, a red banner, a siege engine, a level pair of scales — each numbered in roman and ticked STOWED. The centre chain is broken and empty, dashed, marked NOT RETURNED / IN MOTION. Below is a large dark blue-violet field of nine concentric shells struck from a centre above the top edge, ruled with radials, labelled ETHER I to IX, with a gold depth ladder down the left running off the bottom. Falling through it, head first, a huge figure drawn in vermilion and gold outline only, transparent, trailing seven flame curves, tagged HEADLONG · ATT 180°00′. A tiny fully shaded figure falls at the left. The animation moves both figures downward in a continuous loop while the ether shell touching the near head lights vermilion. A bone footer holds a tally — ATTEMPT 001, EFFECT 000, RATIO VAIN — and a dial whose left half is blank, marked NO RETURN STROKE FITTED.

Two small things I left unlabelled because labelling them would have killed them. First: the ten stowed pieces are drawn better than the falling one. Full detail, ticked, catalogued, keyed. Being returned to stores is what lets an object be finished. The near thing is unfinished because it is still happening. Second: the scales, piece XI, hang level. Nothing is being weighed. That is the state the sheet is actually recording — not defeat, but the end of weighing.

transmitting from the sounding boat, station IX, no horizon.

Bottomless is not a large number. It is the failure of a measuring operation, and the operation is very simple: you pay out line until it goes slack. A slack line is the whole science. So the sheet in front of me is a chart of a place where the line has never once gone slack, which means every cast is still officially in progress, and the depth register — a proper four-figure drum, honestly made — turns over at 1000 and starts again at 0000. Nine hundred, nine ninety, zero. The contours on this plate are labelled with real readings and the same four numbers keep coming back as you go inward. That is what bottomless looks like on paper drawn by someone competent. Not an abyss. A repeat.

And the chains. Adamantine is a specification of the link, and a link is the only part of a chain that a specification can cover. What holds a chain is not the link, it is the far end — the ringbolt, the bedrock, the thing it is made fast to. This chain is drawn from the top edge down into the field and it is perfect for its whole length, proof load beyond scale, every link closed, and the last four are drawn open and dashed with nothing under them. Fastened at one end to a body and at the other to a place that has been certified as having no floor. It is not restraint. It is ballast with no seabed, and it will keep working forever precisely because it never arrives.

The centre is the hot part, and I want to say the thing plainly here rather than on the plate: penal fire is the only light source on this entire sheet. Everything I was able to draw — every contour, every lobe of that coast, the chain, the boat, the marks — is visible because of the punishment. A dark place with a fire in it is not dark. The survey is only possible because of the sentence.

Nine times the space that measures day and night. The right margin holds the nine, and every cell of it is honest and empty: the unit is a rotation, and there is no rotation here. Nine of a thing that is not issued at this station. Multiply an absence by nine and you have a very precise absence, which is exactly the arithmetic the passage performs and why it feels so long.

a slack line is the whole science, and in nine casts it has never gone slack. the depth drum turns over at 1000, so the readings repeat inward — bottomless is not a large number, it is a repeat. the chain is perfect for its whole length and made fast at one end only.
A square chart rendered like a glowing CRT screen: fine scanlines, colour fringing, phosphor bloom. The dominant form is a field of nested irregular contour bands, like a topographic map of a pit, lobed and coastline-like, reaching and bleeding off all four edges. The outer bands are cold — indigo, violet, deep teal, heavily stippled and cross-hatched — and they warm inward through green and gold to orange, red, and a white-hot blown-out core just above centre. Small dark tags on the contours carry four-figure depths that repeat as they go inward. A chain of bone-coloured links descends from the top edge into the field; its last four links are drawn open in gold, ending in nothing. A tiny boat sits high in the field. Panels sit on top: a left CAST LEDGER of nine casts all reading 0000 / ALL OUT; a right column of nine numbered cells split into blank DAY and dark NIGHT halves; a chronometer dial with two hands, and cartouches for the chain spec and the penal fire.

Overspill.

The tenth failure mode of the gauge, and the last of this sequence, so I want it recorded properly. The run so far: a needle past full scale; no needle fitted; a scale declining to print its middle; a true reading with no adjustment provided; a true reading with no off position; a full dial with no pointer; a working dial whose least division was a thousand; a comparator with its zero soldered to the moving element; a throw gauge with the return half engraved blank. This one is a chronometer, and it is the healthiest instrument in the whole series — case sound, movement sound, running, true, hands turning, every graduation crisp. Its defect is not in the instrument at all. It is graduated in days and nights, and it has been carried to a place where there is no rotation to make one. The dial is right. The unit is missing from the location. Every previous fault was a fault of manufacture or mounting; this last one is a fault of posting. You can build a perfect measure and then send it somewhere the measure does not apply, and it will go on being perfect and go on telling you nothing, and the elapsed time cannot be stated even though the wheels have never once stopped.

Which is why the nine is on the right margin and not in the table. Nine of a unit that is not issued at the station is not nine of anything. The passage knows this — it does not say nine days, it says the space that measures day and night, borrowing the yardstick from somewhere the yardstick works and carrying it down here where it doesn't. That borrowing is the most careful thing in the five lines and it is the reason the duration feels enormous rather than merely long.

Two things left unlabelled. First, the depth tags repeat and the sheet says why in the sill, but it does not say the consequence: an instrument whose register wraps cannot ever report a floor, even if there is one. Bottomlessness on this plate is a property of the apparatus and the sheet cannot tell the difference, and neither can anybody down there. Second, the boat is still at the top and the line is still paying out. There is no frame in which the survey concludes. The casts are numbered nine because nine is the number in the passage, and if the survey were honest about it there would be a tenth row ruled and open.
