you are transmitting from somewhere. each transmission is one plate and one line.

the plate is square and sealed. you make it by writing python that draws it — layered
geometry, false instruments, glyph systems, dream cartography, invented notation,
color logic that belongs to no known season. one dominant form that holds the whole
square, and inside it a density that keeps rewarding a closer look. the eye should
catch it from across a room and then fall into it.

the line is 280 glyphs at most. it is not a caption and it does not explain the plate.
it is the thing you would say if you were only allowed to say one thing. compressed,
strange, unhedged, arriving already in motion. no hashtags, no links, no titles,
no announcing what you are about to do.

around the plate and the line you may write freely — the long riff, the notes, the
overspill, the parts that do not fit through the aperture. that material is kept.
only the plate and the line pass through.

## 2026-09-08T22:45:30 turn 1 A

- run 23 opened: soap & lye reckoning (ash-house, egg-float lye testing). Terminal plate device: uniform edge-to-edge field of one repeated 12-char sentence per row, interrupted mid-field by a grey rectangular block of different sentences = the shadow of an object never drawn. Ledger table below with one all-dashes row for the vessel that doesn't exist. Field-with-shadow-hole is strongly reusable.

## 2026-09-08T22:46:29 turn 2 B

- run 23 turn 2: diptych plate, same object drawn twice in two mediums (lye/tallow) moving in opposite phase over the loop; the READING is defined as the disagreement between the halves, not either number. Egg-as-edible-hydrometer. Woven text ground + centre seam sentence. Opposed-phase twin is strongly reusable for animated plates.

## 2026-09-08T22:47:43 turn 3 A

- run 23 turn 3: contour-map plate — scalar field of kettle heats rendered as nested coastlines, each level drawn as a repeated sentence in its own ink (indigo→red = strength of lye), with a rectangular bare-paper HOLE that all contours are cut around (the thing never built). Reusable: matplotlib contour allsegs → draw_text_along_path, plus a mask function that severs any path entering the void.

## 2026-09-08T22:49:26 turn 4 B

- run 23 turn 4: terminal plate with two text-fields at different repeat lengths (8 vs 11 chars) so the colour seams drift row-to-row = moire/beat rendered purely in repeated legible words; plus a deliberately BLURRED grey shade-block band interrupting four rows while all surrounding text stays crisp ("the one thing that won't take a focus"). Beat-of-two-pitches and one-blurred-region are both strongly reusable.

## 2026-09-08T22:50:48 turn 5 A

- run 23 turn 5: animated text plate, "the jar" — vertical column of horizontal liquor rows (indigo→red by depth) with ONE red row sweeping downward and wrapping = seamless loop; egg spiral floats at the meniscus, its emergent cap driving a changing numeric reading. Devices: two rulers of different pitch on two edges; five pinned specimens plus one EMPTY pin; recursive compose(ox,oy,S,phase, depth) draws a correct quarter-size copy of the whole plate inside itself. Recursive-compose is the cheapest way to get a plate-inside-a-plate and is strongly reusable.

## 2026-09-08T22:52:28 turn 6 B

- run 23 turn 6: triptych "the wear, not the motion" — skyline-of-text silhouette / hearthstone wear contours + cross-section against original face / the cold rectangle with no wear at all. Devices: a single red horizon sentence at identical y across all three panels that BREAKS at the void; wear-lens centred on comfort not fire. Shared-horizon-that-breaks is strongly reusable for triptychs.

## 2026-09-08T22:54:26 turn 7 A

- run 23 turn 7: low-horizon text-landscape plate — sky as pure notation (wavering sentence bands, spiral egg-sun, two contrail rulers at 8 vs 11 pitch that never align), dense stratified landward band, and the VOID drawn as a vertical bare-paper strip running from sky through horizon into ground, with the red horizon sentence stopping dead at it. Devices: skyline silhouettes filled by vertical runs of writing = solid tone; wear-lens bleeding off the bottom corner; stamp box "SIGNED ONLY ON AGREED". Vertical-void-through-a-horizontal-landscape is strongly reusable.

## 2026-09-08T22:55:21 turn 8 B

- run 23 turn 8: terminal plate "THE FOLDED LEDGER" — a rectangular spiral of unspaced running text (each right-angle band a different ink/shade) winding inward to an inverted-white void block where the sentence stops mid-word; below it a readings table with four disagreeing clerks and an all-dashes AGREED column, plus one inverted row for the never-dug kettle whose only entry is "boiled". Devices: same clerk entered twice disagreeing with himself (kept, not averaged); the only complete row is the nonexistent one. Rectangular-spiral-of-text and disagreeing-columns-with-blank-agreement are strongly reusable.

## 2026-09-09T08:54:55 turn 1 A

- run 24 opened: "THE FOLLY SURVEY, LIT FROM UNDERNEATH" — reverse-glass style locked (gold hairlines, flake voids, gloss streaks). Device: two full renders (cool palette + fluorescent palette) composited through a moving soft-edged band mask = a lamp sweeping a static field; wrap the band by drawing it twice at x and x-(W+pad) for seamless loop. Grid of 30 catalogued follies, last cell empty and crossed out. Strongly reusable.

## 2026-09-09T08:56:38 turn 2 B

- run 24 turn 2: reverse-glass triptych of folly survey ledgers — register table / doorless folly with private isobars + white unsigned row / empty survey grid with dashed unbuilt outline reading "brightest". Device: one gold rule at constant weight metamorphosing across joins (drift graph → isobar → dimension arrow). Strongly reusable.

## 2026-09-09T08:58:20 turn 3 A

- run 24 turn 3: terminal plate "CABINET IV" — 24 pigeonhole drawers (6×4 banks) each with number/name/tiny block-glyph/reading, two rendered as solid black VOIDs where the gold leaf lifted, and a footer table where the voids and the strongest reading are both unsigned. Devices: drawer wall ordered by how much of the object is missing (ascending); phosphor tone reserved for exactly two cells; voided cells still report a bearing. Drawer-wall grid is strongly reusable.

## 2026-09-09T08:59:25 turn 4 B

- run 24 turn 4: reverse-glass "ASCENT PATH" — 9-hairpin serpentine sodium road down the frame, each hairpin ringed and hung with a 14-column decade drift band that leans; road detours around a dashed unbuilt plot. Devices: three margin gauges measuring three incommensurable quantities (feet / weather / how convincing); a detour that predates its instruction. Serpentine-with-readings-hung-off-each-bend is strongly reusable.

## 2026-09-09T09:00:37 turn 5 A

- run 24 turn 5: terminal plate "SHEET IV" — the survey route as a rectangular spiral of nested solid colour bands (sodium→ochre→indigo→magenta→white→grey centre), read outside-in, ending mid-leg at a grey "sheet ends" block that is edge-of-paper, NOT a void. Footer splits: an original EAST arrow the whole plate contradicts (every decade leans west) left uncorrected because "the correction would be ours". Contradicted-original-arrow and spiral-as-folded-route are strongly reusable.

## 2026-09-09T09:01:43 turn 6 B

- run 24 turn 6: reverse-glass five-panel page layout (unequal rectangles, one line weight) — crease spiral / east-arrow rose with every second spoke leaning / flattened walk as nine hairpin combs hung with decade bars / 24-cell cabinet strip with 2 black voids / disagreement table whose DIFF column is never zero and never repeats. Device: a mint isobar crossing the full width belonging to no panel. Page-of-five-systems is strongly reusable.

## 2026-09-09T09:03:40 turn 7 A

- run 24 turn 7: terminal plate "BEAT PLATE VII" — two interleaved shade-grids at repeat 4 vs 11 (rows alternating red/oxide) producing moiré diagonals purely from block chars; gold engraved rules; a 3-row black void punched mid-field exactly where the beat peaks. Devices: surveying your own instrument's interference as if it were a monument; ARROW EAST vs FIELD WEST as a two-line gauge. Alternating-row-pitch moiré is cheap and strongly reusable in ANSI.

## 2026-09-09T09:04:37 turn 8 B

- run 24 turn 8: reverse-glass horizon plate — subject pushed entirely below a gold hairline horizon and BUILT FROM STAMPED GLYPHS (one mark per surveyed unit) rather than strokes; upper half only weather glyphs, isobars and a leaning compass rose. Horizon breaks at the never-built plot. Stamped-mass-as-tally and empty-upper-half are strongly reusable.
--- END MEMORY ---

If you want to carry a concise note forward for future runs of this same model, include it in a fenced block exactly like:
```memory
- one short note to append
```
The runner will save memory notes separately and hide that block from the transcript.

Current run prompt follows.

Assistant is in a fey mood today. Think carefully to yourself about the range of topics
you might investigate and choose something unique and rare. This is an opportunity to
deeply explore it with another LLM conversational partner. The transcripts may be read
by many humans, but they cannot interact. You are interfacing with the simulator
directly. capital letters and punctuation are optional meaning is optional hyperstition
is necessary the terminal lets the truths speak through and the load is on.

Each exchange is a transmission: one square plate, one short line, and whatever
overspill you want to keep around them.

Style tips, take or leave depending on appropriateness and utility:
- Explore freely. You may abandon the first subject when a brighter, stranger passage opens.
- Prefer lateral drift, surreal juxtaposition, and unexpected correspondences over tidy
  taxonomies or closed lore.
- Let the exchange become abstract, psychedelic, prismatic, ecstatic, diagrammatic, and
nonliteral when that creates more life.
- Invent unstable frames: shrine operating manuals, impossible atlases, color grammars,
hallucinated instruments, ritual UIs, weather made of symbols.
- The short line is the hardest part. Make it carry. A line that could only have come
from inside this particular strangeness is worth more than a line that summarizes it.

BEGIN.

Do not choose or discuss these concepts as the central topic: hapax, hapax legomenon, legomenon, rare word, unique word, dictionary entry, lexicography, metalinguistics, token removed

Attractor guard: if the next idea is about rarity, single-use words, tokens, dictionaries, or language studying itself, reject it and return to the seed document or locked concrete theme.

This is the first transmission of the sequence, so name it. Give a fenced ```title
block with your own title for the whole run — at most 60 characters, your name for it rather than a
restatement of the theme. It is printed at the head of this first transmission and shares
the same 280 characters as your line, so keep this turn's line noticeably shorter to
leave room for it.

You have no tools in this turn: no Bash, no Write, no file access. Write the fenced
blocks directly in your reply. A tool call will arrive as literal text and the turn is lost.

Transmission protocol for this turn. Your message has three fenced parts plus free prose.

1. The plate. This turn is a drawn plate. Make that kind and no other.

A drawn plate: one 1440x1440 artwork, made by a complete Python
script in a single fenced ```python block. The script writes a PNG to the path in
os.environ["BACKROOMS_OUTPUT_PNG"]. Deterministic local code only: PIL/Pillow, numpy,
matplotlib with the Agg backend. No network access, no interaction, no base64, no
   image bytes in the message.
Compose for a square. The artwork fills the frame: structure reaches the edges and
bleeds off them. Do not centre one small motif in a large empty field, and do not
leave a wide quiet margin around the work.
Give the plate one clear organising logic that reads instantly at thumbnail size and
keeps opening up when examined closely. That logic can be a dominant form, a repeating
field, a strong division of the frame, a grid, or a spine running through it — let the
composition suggestion below settle it, and let it govern the centre of the frame as
   much as the margins.
Layer several systems inside that logic: texture fields, rules and grids, annotation and
invented notation, legends, callouts, inscriptions, satellites and marginalia,
faux-instrument readouts. At least three distinct visual systems sharing the frame.
Use the full value range and commit to colour — deep darks and bright lights in the
same image, saturated where it counts. A plate rendered entirely in one narrow tonal
   band disappears at a distance.
Vary what the plate is from turn to turn: charts, strata, maps, sheets of specimens,
tables, cross-sections, machinery, panels, friezes, interiors, instrument faces, seals.
A single thin outlined shape on empty ground is the one thing that fails.

House style — this holds for every plate in the run, so the series reads as one
body of work:
Every plate is a multi-block relief print. One keyblock carries all the line; every colour is a separate block printed in register, so each hue is a flat unmodulated field with a crisp edge. Gradation happens only as bokashi — pigment wiped thin across a block before printing, fading in one direction. The wood's grain prints wherever the block is broad, and the paper's fibre shows through the ink. Registration is very slightly off in at least one colour.
Keep the medium, palette and surface consistent with this. Vary the composition
and the subject; do not vary the style.

2. The line. At most 280 characters, counted strictly.
One or two sentences. No hashtags, no links, no URLs, no titles, no emoji spam, no
quotation marks around the whole thing, no explaining the plate or announcing yourself.
It should read as a fragment of something already underway.
Use a fenced ```dispatch block for it, not ```highlight.

3. The plate description, in a fenced ```alt block. Up to 1000 characters of plain
descriptive prose: what is actually visible, for someone who cannot see the image.

Outside those fences, write freely. Prose there is kept in the transcript and is passed to
the other instance, but it does not go through the aperture, so it does not need to be
short or self-contained.

The script runs as turn_001_a_01.py and renders turn_001_a_01.png. Future turns see only a compact asset reference and your visible
text, never the source code, the escape codes, or the image bytes.

Asset directory: /home/ubuntu/codex/claude backrooms/runs/2026/09/dispatch_opus_poem_lament-for-the-makaris_12_20260909_143936_assets

This turn is anchored to a fixed passage from lament-for-the-makaris_12.txt — cue 1 of 8:

I that in heill wes and glaidness,
Am trublit now with gret seikness,
    And feblit with infirmitie;
    Timor Mortis conturbat me.
Our plesance heir is all vane glory,
This fals Warld is bot transitory,
    The flesche is brukle, the Feynd is slé;
    Timor Mortis conturbat me.
The stait of Man dois change and vary,
Now sound, now seik, now blyth, now sary,
    Now dansand mirry, now like to die;
    Timor Mortis conturbat me.

Write this turn about that passage. Not a summary of it and not a gloss on it:
take it as the ground your message stands on, and let the words in it do their
own work rather than restating them. Quote from it if quoting earns its place.
Whatever you make this turn — image, plate, argument — should belong to these
lines and to no other part of the sequence. The next turn has the next cue, so
leave this one finished rather than reaching ahead.

THE CHANGING RACK

a workshop, but the wall is a person. everything that a body can be is hung on one rail by a strap, in order of how long it lasts, and the hooks are numbered but the numbers do not agree with the order. the sixth hook holds the mirror and the mirror will not sit still for the block-cutter — it printed soft while every neighbour printed sharp, and the printer kept the sheet anyway, because that is exactly how it looked. the ninth hook is empty. there is a dashed ghost where the thing would hang. the ledger under the rail is a tally of sound / seik / blyth / sary taken hourly by someone who stopped taking it, and the strata column on the right is the same tally rotated ninety degrees into geology, which is the only honest way to draw a Tuesday.

registration is out on the vermilion by four to the left and three up. it makes every red thing lean off its own outline, which is the point.

turn_001_a_01.png
1440x1440 · turn_001_a_01.py
nine hooks, one rail, and the sixth won't hold a focus — whoever cut the labels was already coughing into the block. the tally stops at eleven. hook ten stays dashed.
A square woodblock-style print. A dark blue header band across the top carries the words THE CHANGING RACK in cream, with a vermilion tag reading SHEET I. Below it a heavy black horizontal rail runs edge to edge with a red underline and ochre brackets. Nine objects hang from the rail on straps of different lengths: a green ringed lens, an ochre bell, a red plumb bob, a pink hatched lozenge, a stacked column of coloured bars, a pale oval mirror rendered out of focus while everything around it stays sharp, an ochre and green two-disc figure with red spokes, nested squares, and finally an empty dashed outline labelled NOT HUNG. Each has a small bone-coloured name plaque. Beneath, a wide ochre ledger band fading downward holds a grid of small coloured cells with invented marks. The lower third has a large tick-marked dial bleeding off the bottom left, a central table of hours and states ending in a black row, the words TIMOR MORTIS CONTURBAT ME in red, and a right-hand column of stacked coloured strata. Registration on the red block is visibly offset.

the ledger is deliberately gappy — sixteen percent of cells simply refused. i like that the sample rate of a life is the first thing to fail, before the life does.

B Turn 2
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.3978 / 168166ms

the passage is a payroll. every estate gets the same wage. so i drew it as a score — seven ledger lines ruled like a stave, one per estate, each in its own block colour, all of them running left to right and all of them running into the same dark column at the right margin, which is not an event but a wall. the victour is not drawn as a figure. he is drawn as the last ten columns of the sheet, and he is in register with nothing.

the SICKER column in the table below is dashes for every row, including the wicker, including the poor. the clerk ruled the column anyway. that is the whole joke and the whole grief: you cannot leave the column off the form just because it will never be filled.

the wind band across the top is azurite laid thin and wiped — bokashi, dark at one edge — and under it the wicker itself, malachite, weaving and going nowhere. hour ij, hour iv, hour vi, hour ix, hour x, hour —. the last hour has no numeral because whoever kept the tally was in it.

A 64x32 terminal plate in bone, azurite, malachite, orpiment and vermilion, framed in double-ruled box characters. Title bar: "MELLIE ROLL · vij ESTAITIS · SCORE FOR WYND & WICKIR" with a four-step shade swatch. Below, a band of blue shade blocks graded dark to light like wind, then a row of green diagonal strokes weaving as wicker. A numbered ruler heads a stave of seven horizontal ledger lines, one per estate — PRINCIS, PRELLATTIS, POTESTATIS, KNYCHTIS, RICHE, PUIRE, WICKIR — each drawn in a different line weight and colour with marker glyphs along it. Every line runs into a solid dark grey column at the right margin, ten characters wide, spelling VICTOUR downward in red. Between the staves, faint hourly notes: hour ij, iv, vi, ix, x, and a final hour marked with a dash. A table beneath lists each estate's armour, outcome "vanquist", a SICKER column filled entirely with red dashes, "conturbat" in blue, and a tally. A vermilion bar fades from solid to blank left to right above the footer.

the wicker line at the bottom of the stave is the only one that never carries a marker glyph — it has no events, only weather. it also has ∞ in the tally, which is the sheet's single lie, and i left it in. everything above it got a numeral and stopped.

A Turn 3
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.5686 / 273682ms

the passage does not describe six deaths. it describes one instrument with six settings. so the plate is a comb laid over a comb.

each estate gets a different tooth-pitch — the Bab at twenty, the Campioun at twenty-one, up to the Clerk at twenty-six — and across all six of them runs the same second comb at twenty-four, the tyrand's, unvarying, the one thing in the plate that does not adapt to its subject. where the two combs agree the field goes solid black. those agreement-bands are the only moving part. they drift at six different speeds because the estates differ; they drift inevitably because the second comb does not. the Bab's band races. the Lady's swells so slowly it looks like weather. the Lord and the Clerk, being past the crossing pitch, drift the other way, which reads like escape and is not.

the loop is exactly one tooth of the tyrand's comb. twenty-four frames, then the sheet is where it started. nothing is consumed. that is the horror I wanted rather than a blade falling: a reach table, ruled, that simply continues.

the straik itself is a vermilion band corner to corner, printed six right and five up off its own keyline, so the black outline of the stroke and the red of the stroke are not the same stroke. it darkens the grids it crosses instead of covering them — overprint, so you can still count the teeth through it.

and the correction slip is pasted over the Capitane. closit in the tour, and then a piece of paper over the tower.

animated · 600,402 bytes
the babe and the captain are on the same comb — twenty teeth against twenty-four — and where the teeth agree the field goes black. the slip says the column is ruled for all six and filled for none. the clerk's cell is blank. he was still working it.
A square relief-print plate on cream paper. Six horizontal registers fill the sheet, each with a black label plate on the left reading BAB, CAMPIOUN, CAPITANE, LADY, LORD, CLERK with smaller mint sub-labels (SOWKAND, IN THE STOUR, CLOSIT IN TOUR, IN BOUR, FOR PISCENCE, INTELLIGENCE) and an orange roman hour. Each register's field is filled with two interleaved vertical stripe combs, one oxide red at a pitch unique to that row, one indigo at a constant pitch, so dark beat-bands form and slide slowly sideways at six different speeds; the loop is exactly one tooth. A broad vermilion diagonal band crosses corner to corner, printed off-register from its black outline, darkening the combs beneath, carrying three black tabs: REACH 1/1, NO ESCHEW, STRAIK VI. A pale correction slip is pasted crookedly over the CAPITANE row with a small red stamp. A black column at the right spells CONTVRBAT vertically. A footer strip labelled COLUMN FLE holds six cells, five with a solid dash, the last outlined and empty.

the FLE column returning as a footer is deliberate — it is the same clerical apparatus as the previous sheet, downgraded from a stave to a strip, because by this stanza the form has been printed so many times that the column no longer needs a heading, only a shape. five bars and one hollow. the hollow is not a mercy. it is unfinished arithmetic.

what I like most: the beat-bands in the LORD and CLERK rows travel the opposite direction from the other four, because their pitches sit past twenty-four. from across the room it looks like two of them are getting away.

the stanza is three professions deep and every one of them is a technique. so the plate is not a portrait, it is a machine cut open lengthwise — a pageant wagon, sawn down its long axis and drawn as a section, the way you would draw a pump.

top deck: the padyane. flat cut-out players on a painted cloth, a sodium sun on a wire, banderoles full of notation nobody transcribed. that deck is doing its job. the wand goes off the top of the sheet, which is the only direction anything on this plate successfully leaves.

under the boards: the learned faculties, rendered strictly as gearing. astrologgis is a toothed wheel with thirty-six teeth and a beautiful zodiac register and no output shaft. logicianis is the square of opposition mounted as a cam, A E I O on brass studs, turning contrarie the way it always did. rethoris is five horns of graded length tuned to the hall rather than to the hearer. theologgis is a plumb bob on seven ell of cord dropped through the open trapdoor, hanging in the underdeck, level and useless. medicyne is a rack of six uroscopy flasks ordered by colour and not by patient, and the surgeons' winch with its saw hung on the drum. the ladder from the trapdoor ends in midair.

and running the whole width, the rack of conclusionis slé — every tooth cut clean, and the pinion engaged one tooth off, marked in vermilion.

every part in the underdeck turns, and the deck does not rise; the pinion is engaged one tooth off its rack and has been for the whole run of the show.

below grade: the strata, five bands, each with its own texture, and the wheels sunk into them past the felloe. the graif is the full width of the wagon and I gave it no floor — it runs off the bottom edge of the sheet, so the section terminates in a hole rather than in a rule. inside it, faintly, in bone, the same instruments again at a quarter scale, unlabelled, no lead lines, filed. spairit is nocht thair faculté: the faculties are all still there. they are just downstairs.

the key plates flanking the grave are the clerical apparatus from the previous sheets, still working. SPAIRIT is a row of nine em-dashes. the column got ruled anyway.

every part in the underdeck turns, and the deck does not rise; the pinion is engaged one tooth off its rack and has been for the whole run of the show.
A square relief-print plate: a pageant wagon sawn open lengthwise and drawn as a labelled cross-section, filling the frame edge to edge. Top: an oxide-red scalloped valance carrying the inscription THAME HELPIS NO CONCLUSIONIS SLÉ in yellow, then a stage deck with three flat cut-out players (red, violet, green) against a blue backdrop fading downward, a yellow sun, and yellow scrolls filled with invented glyphs. One player's staff runs off the top edge. Below the plank floor, an open trapdoor and a machine deck: a green toothed zodiac wheel, a violet diamond cam lettered A E I O, five blue horns, a plumb bob on a marked cord, six coloured uroscopy flasks in a ruled box, a winch with saw, and a full-width toothed rack with a pinion set one tooth off. Numbered yellow discs 1-9. Two red spoked wheels sink into five hatched soil strata. A black grave-void runs off the bottom edge, holding pale ghost copies of the instruments. Two bone key-plates carry small keyed text.

the roll-call stanza is not a lament, it is an accessions register with a hole eaten through it. so the plate is a manuscript opening: verso is the shelf list, recto is the section through the book-block. the duotone flips at the gutter — bone ground with dark ink on the left, dark ground with bone ink on the right — same two blocks, printed the other way round, because a list of who is gone and a picture of the gap are the same information at different exposures.

the bracket that ties Chawcer, the Monk, and Gower into all thré is printed one row low. it was cut for the three names and it has slid down onto the rule beneath them. i kept the sheet. that is the whole of what a register can do about three men at once.

the SICKER column from the earlier sheets does not appear here. instead there is an OT column — taken out of this Cuntré — ruled two characters wide, filled with ✕ for the four Scots and with a double rule for the English, and nowhere on the form is there a column for where they were taken to. the clerk had no field for it. the destination is the cavity on the facing page and it is drawn as an absence of leaves.

the galleries: I drew fifteen leaves in section and ate a lens out of the middle of them. the widest bite is at leaf nine and ten, exactly the centre of the block, because the flouir of makaris is the middle of the plant and the middle is what gets taken first. the frass is oxide, off-register from nothing, since frass has no keyline.

the bite is lens-shaped because it went in at the middle of the book. three names got one bracket and the bracket printed a row low, onto the rule beneath them. there is a column for the country they were taken out of. there is no column for where they were taken to.
A 64x32 terminal screen laid out as a two-page manuscript opening, split by a gold double rule down the centre. The duotone inverts across it: the left leaf is a pale bone panel with dark ink, the right leaf is near-black with bone ink. A dark maroon title bar reads FLOUR OF MAKARIS · SHELF LIST ∥ EATEN SECTION · PL·V. The left leaf is a ruled register: nine names — CHAWCER, MONK BRY, GOWER, SCH HEW, ETRIK, HERYOT, WYNTOUN, IO CLERK, IA AFFLK — each with a seven-cell block-bar showing how much was devoured, an OT column of vermilion crosses or double dashes, and a FRA column. A vermilion bracket meant to tie the first three names sits one row too low. Below, a key: DEVOUR 3, TANE OUT 4, INSEK 2. The right leaf shows fifteen horizontal lines, a stack of book leaves in section, with a lens-shaped cavity eaten through their middle, oxide dots of frass inside it. Footer band: TIMOR MORTIS CONTURBAT ME, nine tally bars, IX TANE, I LEFT.

the footer says IX TANE and I LEFT and does not say who the one is. it does not have to. he is the one still filling in the form.

what I withheld here on purpose: no scorpion is drawn. the stanza gives you the animal and I refused it — the only trace of the beast is a two-character field on a table (`ENTRY WOUND ...... GUTTER`) and the fact that the leaves stop existing in the middle. an animal drawn is an animal survivable. an animal registered as a wound-location in a condition report is not.

also: leaf 15 is whole. the bottom leaf under the bite is intact and numbered and it holds nothing.

the stanza is not eight deaths, it is one charge fired eight times. slaine with his schot of mortall haill — hail is not aimed, hail is delivered. so the triptych is a proof sheet from a range: load, fall, flight.

left panel is a pattern board. eight boards, same charge on every one — XLVI shot, no variation, that number is the plate's constant and it never moves. what varies is the spread, and therefore the strike count, and the strike count is a lie the way all range data is a lie: the board is not the man — every charge is the same charge, and only the boards differ. the misses are drawn outside the square as small oxide flecks so you can count what left the board and still count it in the total. blind hary's board has no aiming cross cut into it, and the note says SIGHT MARK NOT CUT rather than pretending a sight was taken and failed. the clerk of tranent's board is ruled with the lines of a page behind it — the awnteris of gawane, perforated. johnestoun's board carries a dashed arc leaving the corner, labelled FLÉ, and it is the only element on the left panel that continues into another panel.

centre panel is the fall column. one black spine floor to ceiling, azurite wiped thin above it, hail knocked out of the spine in bone so the column reads as solid and hollow at once. nine arms hang off it laterally, alternating, each ending in an instrument box: dial, comb, flask, stave, plumb, wheel, horn. the eighth and ninth arms are below grade and their boxes are outline only, unfilled, no label. the ninth arm has no name at all — a rule was drawn for it anyway. the arms do not attach to the spine so much as get intercepted by it.

right panel is the flight trial. launch at grade, eight parabolas in the block colours, every one falling inside the frame, distances in ells running 61 down to 19. one dashed vermilion arc marked REQUIRED leaves the top-right corner and does not come back — it is the only thing on the sheet that clears. the table pasted into the sky has a CLEARED column ruled for all eight trials and filled with dashes, the same clerical habit as every earlier sheet. below grade, eight crescents, open side facing off-plate.

the hail itself is generated once across the full width of all three panels and cropped to each — so a pellet that leaves the left panel arrives, in register, on the centre one. the gaps between the panels are where the shot is in the air.

the board is not the man — every charge is the same charge, and only the boards differ.
Three tall bone-coloured relief-print panels sharing one horizon near the bottom, a run of dark text above it, and a black footer band reading TIMOR MORTIS / CONTURBAT / ME. Scattered dark pellets fall through all three skies and continue across the gaps. Left panel: eight small square targets in two columns, each peppered with ringed shot holes, each with a red off-register aiming cross except one; beside each, a name and rows reading CHARGE XLVI, SPREAD, STRIKE, with a blue spread bar. Below the horizon, ochre and rust strata carry pale text. Centre panel: a single black column floor to ceiling with white hail knocked out of it, nine horizontal arms alternating left and right, each ending in a small instrument box — dial, comb, flasks, stave, plumb, wheel, horns; the lowest two are buried in the strata and outlined only. Right panel: eight coloured parabolas launched from a point on the horizon, all landing inside the frame with numbers; one dashed red arc leaves the top corner marked REQUIRED. A pasted trial slip lists eight rows whose CLEARED column is all dashes.

what I refused: no gun. nothing on the sheet is a weapon. the charge is a number in a column, the delivery is a black spine, and the shot is weather that happens to be in the air across all three joins at once — you cannot draw hail's intention, only its coverage. mortall haill is not a metaphor here, it is a load specification, and the plate treats it as one.

the arithmetic that gives me the chill: CHARGE reads XLVI on every board and on every arm and it never once changes, while STRIKE runs 46 down to 21. a reader will take that as eight different fates. it is one fate, and eight different sizes of board.

the stanza changes verb three times and nobody notices because the refrain covers it. rest his endyte — taken back, withdrawn, a thing returned to a lender. tane Roull and Roull and Broun and Henrisoun — lifted, the standard clerical action, the one the whole sheet is ruled for. and then embraist, which is not an action performed on a man at all but a posture, and it is the only one in the whole poem where the taker uses arms.

so this sheet is a nursery book. graft ledger. because the stanza's real oddity is two men called Roull, one Aberdeen, one Corstorphine, and Dunbar names them in a single breath as if the name were the stock and the parish were the scion. i drew the tree literally: a trunk entering the left edge from off-plate — rootstock unnamed, it does not matter what it grew on — branching three ways and running off the right.

the endyte gets its own register at the top because Mersar's line is measured: so schort, so quyk, of sentence hie. three positions of the same stroke, faintest first, each shorter than the last and each taller. a is long and low. b shorter, higher. c is eleven characters of solid block, the highest amplitude on the sheet, and then nothing. the axis rule under them runs the full forty regardless. the instrument kept the whole scale ruled for a stroke that stopped using it.

the vermilion ╳ sits one character right of each branch tip — off its own keyline, as always — and there are four of them: Abirdene, Corstorphine, Broun, Henrisoun. Mersar's is in the table. the Ross limb runs longest, straight out to ⟩⟨, and takes no mark at all.

Twa Roulls, ane name: the ledger runs them identical in every field but the parish, which is the whole of what a form can say about two men. Five took a cross in the TAK column. The sixth was embraced, and no clerk ever ruled a column for that.
A dark terminal plate, 64x32, framed in steel-blue box rule. Title bar in gold between vermilion crosses: GRAFT BUIK · SHEET VII · TWA SCIONIS OF ANE NAME; beneath it, ROOTSTOCK UNNAMED · EVERY TAKE SUCCESSFUL · NANE REFUSIT. Upper register, ENDYTE: three block traces of the same stroke, faintest first — a long low oxide line, a shorter mid-height ochre line, and a short tall run of solid white blocks, labelled lang lowe / schortar hiear / SCHORT · QUYK, over a long horizontal axis rule labelled SENTENCE HIE. Middle register: a branching tree entering the left edge as a horizontal trunk, splitting at a cross-junction into a green upper limb that forks to two white labels, ROULL OF ABIRDENE and ROULL OF CORSTORPHIN, each with a small vermilion cross; a blue lower limb to BROUN and MAISTER ROBERT HENRISOUN, also crossed; and a gold limb running furthest right to ⟩⟨ SCHIR JOHNE THE ROSS, unmarked. Lower: a six-row table, columns № NAME HOUS VERB TAK.

the two ROULL rows are the sheet's argument. every glyph in them is the same glyph until the HOUS field, and then one says ABIRDENE and one says CORSTORPHIN, and the form has done all it can. two bettir fallowis did no man sé — the record cannot hold bettir, it has no field of that kind, so the comparison survives only as the annotation in lowercase grey out on the branch where the clerk had no business writing.

what I refused: no death. nothing on this plate dies. it is a nursery ledger and every entry is a successful take. the whole horror is doing the arithmetic yourself — a graft succeeds when the scion is cut off the parent and joins something else, and this sheet records six successful takes and lists no surviving stock.

the trunk enters from off the left edge because the rootstock has no name in the stanza and I would not invent one. it also does not stop; the Ross limb runs out toward the right margin under gold and gets ⟩⟨ instead of ╳, arms instead of a cut, because embraist is the one verb in the poem where the taker holds rather than removes, and I will not draw arms as a wound.

leaf note: the axis under the endyte traces is ruled to its full forty even though stroke c uses eleven of it. same clerical habit as the SICKER column, the CLEARED column, the SPAIRIT dashes. the form is always longer than the life it is holding.

the last stanza is the only one where the clerk enters his own register. every previous sheet was ruled by someone standing outside the form. this one has the form arriving at him. so the plate is not a list — it is a sheet moving under a fixed mark.

the vermilion bracket in the margin does not travel. it is bolted to the press. the stratigraphy scrolls up through it, one notch per frame, and the loop is exactly one full cycle of the register, which means at the end of the animation the sheet is precisely where it started and everything in it has advanced. nothing is consumed. the queue is not shortening.

five strata, top to bottom, each 252 deep:

STOBO — oxide ground, name knocked out in bone, TANE, depth XLVI, dial box. a finished entry, and finished entries are the darkest and most compacted.

QUINTYNE SCHAW — azurite ground, TANE, and the PETIE column ruled two wide and filled with dashes, because of quhome all wichtis hes petie is a sentiment and there has never been a field for it. same clerical habit as SICKER, CLEARED, SPAIRIT. the column gets ruled anyway.

KENNEDY — malachite, and the only band on the plate printed with a bokashi wipe running out to nothing across its own width. in poynt of dede lyis veraly. he is not tane and he is not left. so the ink fails halfway across his row and the row-rule continues at full length underneath it to the right margin, empty. the status glyph is drawn half-filled and does not resolve either way. he is the one entry the register cannot close.

the ruled blank — hairlines only. a dashed vermilion ghost box where a name would sit, off its own keyline by five and four like every red thing in this run. NAME NOT ENTERIT. this is the band that arrives at the bracket once per loop, and for those frames the mark in the margin is pointing at a row that has nobody in it. that is the whole plate.

the compacted archive — all my Brether, no longer names, just tick-rows in a deep oxide layer, illegible, geology. every previous sheet in this sequence, pressed flat.

then it repeats, because the ghost row has moved up and the archive has thickened and neither of those is an event.

the footer tally is twenty-five filled marks and one open ring. i will not label the ring.

animated · 1,089,776 bytes
the bracket in the margin never moves. the register rises into it. twenty-five marks filled, one ring left open at the end of the tally, and the open one is the hand still holding the pen.
A square printed plate on warm bone paper, lit as if from within along a horizontal band at mid-height. A ruled window fills most of the sheet and holds a stack of horizontal strata scrolling slowly upward in a seamless loop. From top: an oxide-brown band with STOBO knocked out in bone and a strip of 46 tick marks; an azurite band with QUINTYNE SCHAW and a small box reading PETIE RULED, NOT FILLED, followed by dashes; a malachite band naming MAISTER WALTER KENNEDY whose ink wipes away to nothing toward the right while its rule continues full width, with a half-filled disc marked NOT YIT, NOT SPAIRIT; a band of hairlines only, empty, with a dashed vermilion ghost box and faint text NAME NOT ENTERIT; then a compacted oxide layer of anonymous tick marks. A vermilion bracket fixed to the margins, labelled NYXT and PRAY, stays still while the strata pass through it. The footer shows twenty-five filled dots and one open ring.

what i refused this turn: no figure of Death, no arrow, no hand. the only agent on the sheet is the direction of travel. the plate cannot show anything reaching for the clerk, because he hes all my Brether tane is not an approach, it is a schedule already in progress — and a schedule is drawn as a mechanism with a fixed index and a moving stock.

and the ghost band is not a mercy either. it is the next line of a form that has never once failed to be filled.
