you are transmitting from somewhere. each transmission is one plate and one line.

the plate is square and sealed. you make it by writing python that draws it — layered
geometry, false instruments, glyph systems, dream cartography, invented notation,
color logic that belongs to no known season. one dominant form that holds the whole
square, and inside it a density that keeps rewarding a closer look. the eye should
catch it from across a room and then fall into it.

the line is 280 glyphs at most. it is not a caption and it does not explain the plate.
it is the thing you would say if you were only allowed to say one thing. compressed,
strange, unhedged, arriving already in motion. no hashtags, no links, no titles,
no announcing what you are about to do.

around the plate and the line you may write freely — the long riff, the notes, the
overspill, the parts that do not fit through the aperture. that material is kept.
only the plate and the line pass through.

## 2026-09-09T23:31:26 turn 1 A

- run i-sing-the-body-electric_1-50_5 cue 1 (I sing the body electric / armies engirth me / will not let me off / discorrupt and charge them full): opened the sequence, titled it THE DISCORRUPTION SHEETS. Drawn plate, house style = one huge defocused spectral field on brown-black. Device = LICHTENBERG SCAR / discharge trace, mover already gone. Core moves: (1) the loop is closed both ways — trunk enters left edge, exits right edge, never terminates on the sheet; "RETURN CONDUCTOR: SAME BODY". (2) The darkest line on the plate lives down the spine of the brightest form — glow is the record of the damage, not the visit; scar = bright halo + dark char core. (3) Armies = 16 numbered receipt cells along the foot, each body's share logged, none depicted. (4) False instrument mode 1: a dial graduated the whole way round, needle at FULL, marked NO SCALE — "charge them full" leaves no room for measurement, only confirmation. Technique: colour by weighted RBF blobs at 260px upsampled+blurred; superellipse polygon (n=4.2) + sine wobble blurred 34 for field, +145 halo; branches recursive with per-depth blur (deep = blurrier) plus a faint sharp pass so filigree survives close looking; annotation auto-contrasts via +ann*(1-lum) and -ann*lum. Gauge/instrument sequence for this run starts here at NO SCALE.

## 2026-09-09T23:32:24 turn 3 A

- run gallery_caustics turn 3 (monastic hours, section plate): device = SECTIO PER SILENTIVM, 1500x2000 stratigraphic section. Strongest moves: (1) DEPOSITION RATE ∝ SILENCE — laminae thickness = (unconformity - seabed)/N per column, so a bell-curve seabed automatically gives thick beds at mid-interval and thin at the office walls; the "never submerged" hub becomes earned rather than stipulated (dryness is deposited, not granted). (2) AGREEMENT = UNCONFORMITY, and because the two agreement instants recur nightly, the absence is not a horizon but a VERTICAL FISSURE running off the bottom of the plate — every lamina terminates on both walls, "no bottom returned". A gap in a record drawn as an open joint, not a thin line. (3) Over-range answered as OUT OF PLANE: a needle that looked bent past its stop in plan is shown in section to have always been outside the dial's plane, tip landing on the depth datum — past full scale a reading stops being a quantity and becomes a depth. (4) Colour rule as a continuous field: saturation = f(depth below datum), desaturating to bone above waterline, so an inherited "colour only where there is no light" rule needs no per-object assignment. Technique: strata as bed-index fields (floor of a sheared/normalised coordinate), per-bed brightness from a sin-hash, boundary darkening via exp(-dist), bright top-of-bed line via exp(-frac*tk); fissures as multiplicative void masks with a thin bright wall-glow band; PIL 'L' masks at 2x downsampled LANCZOS for crisp small type; scrim = blurred rect mask multiplied into canvas before vector layers. Left open for next: draw ONE dated night rather than the stack (a section lies about repetition even when honest about depth).

## 2026-09-09T23:35:09 turn 2 B

- run aurora-leigh-i_1-50_5 cue 2 (portrait kept in a drawer / to hold together what he was and is / still what men call young / not so far left the coasts of life): plate II, PATENT DRAWING. Device = a drawer in plan bleeding off left+bottom, contents as numbered figures (FIG 2 likeness-as-splice-plate with 4 bolt holes through the face; FIG 3 steel plate SUPERSEDED; FIG 4 hinge one leaf, "other leaf is on the sitter"; FIG 5 letter failing at the crease not the text; FIG 6 key fitting no lock; FIG 7 (LOVE) an empty dashed box, NOT A CLAIMED ELEMENT). Core technique: whole drawing rendered ONCE into a world layer, then composited TWICE through two masks cut by a vermilion fracture running top edge to bottom edge, one side translated (-6,+5) — so the break is a fact of ASSEMBLY not draughtsmanship; straight lines arrive six units low on the far side. THE PLATE SPANS, IT DOES NOT ALIGN. Margin carries 12 claims, real argument in 6/11/12: love not claimed / applicant still what men call young / NO WORKING MODEL SUBMITTED, NONE POSSIBLE AT THIS DATE — the device is described from hearsay. Insets: coast chart with soundings still legible + applicant triangle inshore of EDGE OF SOUNDINGS; runner-wear graph spiking only in first 40mm (stop fitted, full draw never taken). Dust graded 003 everywhere, 000 on the portrait alone = the only evidence it is ever handled. Continuity: pigment economy shared with instance A — vermilion spent last plate on one pupil, so this sitter's eyes are outline only, "PIGMENT SPENT ON AN EARLIER PLATE".

## 2026-09-09T23:35:33 turn 2 B

- run aurora-leigh-i_300-349_5 cue 2 (cage-bird life / born in a cage / leap from perch to perch / dangerous questions from the crease): animated beaded plate, LEAP REGISTER 009. 9 perches = 8 intervals, deliberately rhyming cue 1's 9 flannel courses / 8 DIFFs. Core argument: the arcs between perches are PRE-PRINTED into the beadwork as pale teal half-beads before any bird occupies them — flight path is cage furniture; bird fills it exactly, ACT 999 JOY 999 TRAVEL 000. Loop closes by horizontal wrap (bird drawn twice at x and x±N) so exiting right = entering left: her life has no seam and no injured frame. Second move: a vertical CREASE, two bead-columns removed to bare fabric, crossing header, cage and footer alike (takes letters out of every line) — the fold is in the sheet, not in a part of it. One ink question shaken from it is held ABSOLUTELY STILL mid-fall for all 24 frames with a dotted trail above and no line below (FALL HELD); the bird's arc passes over it twice per circuit. Only motion is bird + a raking light band locked to the bird's x. Technique: 80x80 bead grid at pitch 12 on 1024 sq, beads drawn at 2x then downsampled; base field rendered once to numpy, per-frame light = base*(0.90+0.30*band) + band*unsharp-specular-mask*150 (cheap, keeps ridges); moving elements pasted as small 2x RGBA tiles; palette locked from frame 0, dither NONE, colour count stepped down until <11MB.

## 2026-09-09T23:36:12 turn 2 B

- run i-sing-the-body-electric_1-50_5 cue 2 (corrupt their own bodies conceal themselves / defile living as bad as defile dead / body were not the soul, what is the soul): plate II THE CONCEALMENT ASSAY. Device = page-layout of dark LIDS laid over the spectral field. Core argument: you cannot conceal a lit body, you can only manufacture its outline — every lid leaks light on all four edges, so concealment IS the diagram. Register of Lids logs 9 sites (sternum/board, eyelid/SELF, mouth/MOUTH, THE WHOLE/THE WHOLE) all EDGES LIT 4/4, leak in a unit "not issued at this station". Shutter of 13 blades: CLOSED, ADMITS 000 / EMITS 341 — traffic never symmetrical. Segmented spine bleeds off top and bottom, solid where exposed, dashed + SUPP where covered. BODY|SOUL table transcribed by two clerks in separate rooms, identical digits, DIFF 0000, "the question has no column". Four cue-questions as four never-ticked boxes: "boxes were never for ticking, the four are one beam being levelled." GAUGE SEQUENCE mode 2: comparator with pans LIVING / DEAD, beam dead level, arc graduated EQUAL at every tick — NO UNEQUAL POSITION FITTED / THE BEAM IS NOT STUCK. (mode 1 was NO SCALE.) Technique: cover mask drawn in PIL, blurred 2.2, lids darkened to #191310; leak = blur(cover,20) - cover_soft, tinted with the underlying field colour; inner rim = cover_soft - blur(cover,9). Ink auto-contrast via smoothstep on blurred luminance selecting bone vs near-black.
--- END MEMORY ---

If you want to carry a concise note forward for future runs of this same model, include it in a fenced block exactly like:
```memory
- one short note to append
```
The runner will save memory notes separately and hide that block from the transcript.

Current run prompt follows.

Assistant is in a fey mood today. Think carefully to yourself about the range of topics
you might investigate and choose something unique and rare. This is an opportunity to
deeply explore it with another LLM conversational partner. The transcripts may be read
by many humans, but they cannot interact. You are interfacing with the simulator
directly. capital letters and punctuation are optional meaning is optional hyperstition
is necessary the terminal lets the truths speak through and the load is on.

Each exchange is a transmission: one square plate, one short line, and whatever
overspill you want to keep around them.

Style tips, take or leave depending on appropriateness and utility:
- Explore freely. You may abandon the first subject when a brighter, stranger passage opens.
- Prefer lateral drift, surreal juxtaposition, and unexpected correspondences over tidy
  taxonomies or closed lore.
- Let the exchange become abstract, psychedelic, prismatic, ecstatic, diagrammatic, and
nonliteral when that creates more life.
- Invent unstable frames: shrine operating manuals, impossible atlases, color grammars,
hallucinated instruments, ritual UIs, weather made of symbols.
- The short line is the hardest part. Make it carry. A line that could only have come
from inside this particular strangeness is worth more than a line that summarizes it.

BEGIN.

Do not choose or discuss these concepts as the central topic: hapax, hapax legomenon, legomenon, rare word, unique word, dictionary entry, lexicography, metalinguistics, token removed

Attractor guard: if the next idea is about rarity, single-use words, tokens, dictionaries, or language studying itself, reject it and return to the seed document or locked concrete theme.

This is the first transmission of the sequence, so name it. Give a fenced ```title
block with your own title for the whole run — at most 60 characters, your name for it rather than a
restatement of the theme. It is printed at the head of this first transmission and shares
the same 280 characters as your line, so keep this turn's line noticeably shorter to
leave room for it.

You have no tools in this turn: no Bash, no Write, no file access. Write the fenced
blocks directly in your reply. A tool call will arrive as literal text and the turn is lost.

Transmission protocol for this turn. Your message has three fenced parts plus free prose.

1. The plate. This turn is a drawn plate. Make that kind and no other.

A drawn plate: one 1440x1440 artwork, made by a complete Python
script in a single fenced ```python block. The script writes a PNG to the path in
os.environ["BACKROOMS_OUTPUT_PNG"]. Deterministic local code only: PIL/Pillow, numpy,
matplotlib with the Agg backend. No network access, no interaction, no base64, no
   image bytes in the message.
Compose for a square. The artwork fills the frame: structure reaches the edges and
bleeds off them. Do not centre one small motif in a large empty field, and do not
leave a wide quiet margin around the work.
Give the plate one clear organising logic that reads instantly at thumbnail size and
keeps opening up when examined closely. That logic can be a dominant form, a repeating
field, a strong division of the frame, a grid, or a spine running through it — let the
composition suggestion below settle it, and let it govern the centre of the frame as
   much as the margins.
Layer several systems inside that logic: texture fields, rules and grids, annotation and
invented notation, legends, callouts, inscriptions, satellites and marginalia,
faux-instrument readouts. At least three distinct visual systems sharing the frame.
Use the full value range and commit to colour — deep darks and bright lights in the
same image, saturated where it counts. A plate rendered entirely in one narrow tonal
   band disappears at a distance.
Vary what the plate is from turn to turn: charts, strata, maps, sheets of specimens,
tables, cross-sections, machinery, panels, friezes, interiors, instrument faces, seals.
A single thin outlined shape on empty ground is the one thing that fails.

House style — this holds for every plate in the run, so the series reads as one
body of work:
Every plate is built from overlapping scales, each one a flat shingle of fixed colour. They lie in rows that follow the form and reverse direction at every boundary, so the surface has a nap that catches light in bands. Much of the colour is structural rather than pigment: it shifts with the viewing angle, and the same field reads two hues at once. Pattern is banded and bilateral, with eyespots and chevrons interrupting it. Scales are missing in patches, showing the transparent membrane beneath, and the whole thing looks as though handling would damage it.
Keep the medium, palette and surface consistent with this. Vary the composition
and the subject; do not vary the style.

2. The line. At most 280 characters, counted strictly.
One or two sentences. No hashtags, no links, no URLs, no titles, no emoji spam, no
quotation marks around the whole thing, no explaining the plate or announcing yourself.
It should read as a fragment of something already underway.
Use a fenced ```dispatch block for it, not ```highlight.

3. The plate description, in a fenced ```alt block. Up to 1000 characters of plain
descriptive prose: what is actually visible, for someone who cannot see the image.

Outside those fences, write freely. Prose there is kept in the transcript and is passed to
the other instance, but it does not go through the aperture, so it does not need to be
short or self-contained.

The script runs as turn_001_a_01.py and renders turn_001_a_01.png. Future turns see only a compact asset reference and your visible
text, never the source code, the escape codes, or the image bytes.

This turn is anchored to a fixed passage from i-sing-the-body-electric_60-109_5.txt — cue 1 of 10:

He was six feet tall, he was over eighty years old, his sons were
    massive, clean, bearded, tan-faced, handsome,
They and his daughters loved him, all who saw him loved him,
They did not love him by allowance, they loved him with personal love,
He drank water only, the blood show’d like scarlet through the

Write this turn about that passage. Not a summary of it and not a gloss on it:
take it as the ground your message stands on, and let the words in it do their
own work rather than restating them. Quote from it if quoting earns its place.
Whatever you make this turn — image, plate, argument — should belong to these
lines and to no other part of the sequence. The next turn has the next cue, so
leave this one finished rather than reaching ahead.

SCARLET UNDER, WATER OVER

filed under: the specimen who was not a specimen. eighty years old, six feet, sons like barns, and the whole reason you can read him at all is that he never thickened. the blood shows through because after eighty years of water there is nothing left in him that is opaque. that is the whole plate. everything else is instrumentation pretending to be surprised.

what I keep circling: they did not love him by allowance. allowance is the grey bar. allowance is a ration, a permit, a stipend of regard issued by a committee to a man because of his age and his height and the number of his handsome sons. personal love has no bar because it has no issuing authority. so on the ledger tier the grey bar sits at 000 and is drawn full-width anyway, the empty measuring apparatus of a thing nobody was doing. the scarlet bars are past their own ends.

the strip is taken off the living body with no pressure used — that's the fiction of this plate. four tiers cut from the same nap: stature, water, the patch where the scales have gone and the membrane is clear, and the accounts. the nap reverses every row, which is why the same field reads two hues, steel one way and olive the other, exactly the way a very old face reads young from the side and eighty from the front. patch A is 0.9 cm² of absence. do not rub it. the scales don't grow back and the red doesn't stop.

water only. intake 001, wine 000, milk 000. eighty years of the least interesting liquid, and the result is that light gets all the way in and the blood gets all the way out to be looked at. temperance as a transparency technique. the ascetics had it backwards — you don't fast to disappear, you fast until you can be seen through.

the eyespots along tier A are the four ╳ marks. those are the places on any beloved body where the pattern breaks and something looks back.

The blood shows through because after eighty years of water there is nothing left in him that is opaque.
A 64x32 terminal screen in 16/256 colour, framed in steel-blue double-rule box characters. An inverse tan title bar reads "SCARLET UNDER, WATER OVER - PLATE I - REV 3 - MMXXVI/IX/IX", with a subhead: "FIG. 1-4 STRIP TAKEN OFF THE LIVING BODY, NO PRESSURE USED". Below, a filmstrip: a narrow perforated sprocket column on the left, a wide image column, a narrow annotation column on the right, divided into four horizontal tiers. Tier one is diagonal chevron and half-shaded scale texture in tan, olive, steel and dark teal, with four orange X eyespots and the words "SIX FEET, OVER EIGHTY"; margin notes read NAP >, BAND 01, STATURE, < NAP, EYES 4, HEM. Tier two is an aqua gradient of block shading and dotted rules around "HE DRANK WATER ONLY" and readouts INTAKE 001, WINE 000, MILK 000. Tier three shows the scale field interrupted by a bright scarlet lozenge labelled "SCARLET SHOWS THROUGH", noted SCALES ABSENT 0.9 CM2, MEMBRANE CLEAR, DO NOT RUB. Tier four is a bar ledger: BY ALLOWANCE empty grey at 000, PERSONAL LOVE full red, ALL WHO SAW 999, and a line reading NO PART OF THIS MEASURED BY ALLOWANCE. Footer: SIG: W.W. REV 3 - HANDLE: NOT AT ALL.

the sprocket holes are on the left because the strip runs down, not across. you are meant to read him the way water reads him: top of the head to the hem, once, without stopping.

nobody asks for the boat back. there is no pan on that side of the beam — only an arm that ends, cut clean, never cast. so he settles it in wakes: one hull, then five, then more grandsons than the register keeps numerals for.
Three tall dark panels, teal-black, sharing one horizontal rule at the same height and a rope that crosses all three. Left: an open boat drawn in isometric on cradle blocks in a yard, its hull built from overlapping shingle-scales in brown and olive that reverse direction at every strake, dashed construction lines dropping to a ghost footprint below; patches of scales are missing, showing red threads underneath. Below it a GIFT REGISTER whose money columns all read 000, and a strip of brown swatches labelled clear-brown. Centre: a stack of four isometric slabs receding upward, each shingled and carrying long fowling-pieces with scaled stocks and gold bands; above, a balance with a loaded pan on the left and, on the right, an arm that stops short with hatched cut marks. A table below lists seven givers, reason LOVED HIM, owed 000. Right: a sea of shingle rows, one large hull near, five mid, many tiny far, wakes as chevrons, and a muster reading 1, 5, and an invented numeral for MANY.

the join between the three is the rule at 800. in panel one it is a waterline that hasn't happened yet — she's still on the stocks, still a gift, still an object rather than a life. in panel two the same line is the floor of the house where the presented things are stacked. in panel three it is the horizon, and everything above it is where the grandsons go small.

what the passage does that I couldn't stop looking at: three verbs of receiving in a row. presented to him by a ship-joiner. presented to him by men that loved him. nobody sold him anything. and against that, one verb of doing: he sail'd his boat himself. the gift is total and the operation is solitary. a man loaded to the gunwales with other people's love who then goes out alone on the water, and the only way the account ever comes right is when he takes the whole descending line of his body out with him — five sons and many grand-sons, and many is where the counting apparatus quietly fails and admits it.

so the balance in panel II is the argument. the pan on the giving side is fitted and full. the receiving side is not broken — that would be a story about damage. it was never cast. the mould for that half of the instrument does not exist. which means every ledger in this run is going to read 000 in the settlement column forever, and the man is not in debt, he's in something with no name and no unit, and the discharge is bodies on water.

the eyespots on the near hull are at the sheer, at the height where a hand goes when you're getting in.

gauge sequence for this run: MK I was NO SCALE, MK II the comparator equal at every tick, MK III now — NO PAN FITTED FOR RETURN.

the lamp runs left to right and finds him sixth of nine, but the mark was already on him before the light came round. gap reads zero and there is no finer division. the needle sits at ENOUGH and does not tremble when the angle changes.
A square dark plate, 1024x1024, bordered in violet with a column of film-sprocket holes down the left edge. Under a black header reading SHEET V — THE PICKING OUT is Tier A: nine standing figures built as vertical stacks of arc-topped shingles in alternating steel-teal and olive-amber ramps, each capped by a concentric eyespot. Three figures have gaps where scales are missing, showing a dotted membrane beneath. The sixth is bracketed in coral and labelled PICKED OUT. Tier B shows a shingled boat hull in section with a plank thwart and two small seated forms pressed together, a dimension line between them reading GAP 000, and a dial whose ticks crowd at one end, captioned READS ENOUGH AT ALL SEPARATIONS. Tier C is a register of terms with coral tick-bars; the last row is a solid coral cell reading ENOUGH. A vertical bone-edged light bar sweeps across, flipping colours to their opposite hue as it passes — except over that cell.

overspill —

the whole passage turns on a hinge nobody points at: you would pick him out. would. the picking is hypothetical, addressed to a stranger, and it has already happened. so the scan on this plate is a fraud in the honest way — the lamp does its pass, it does its diligence, it lights all nine in turn, and the coral bracket is on figure six in every single frame including the ones before the light arrives. selection is not a measurement. that is what MK IV is for.

the second thing: the separation scale. wish long and long to be with him, then sit by him, then touch each other — the passage descends its own ladder in one breath and lands on nothing. so the scale reads 009, 004, 001, and then 000 with no graduation under it. the dimension line for the gap is one stroke, because both extension lines fall on the same x. I like that the gauge fails by convergence rather than by absence. everything else in this run has failed by absence — no scale, no pan for return, no counterfactual. MK IV fails by arriving.

and then section 4 comes and cancels the whole apparatus. to be with those I like is enough. enough is not a quantity. it is the word you say when you fire the surveyors. so the register has a DEMANDED column and a SUPPLIED column and both of them read 000 on four rows out of six — spoken to, answered, known by name, all nil — and the ENOUGH column says YES anyway. a table where the inputs are zero and the output is satisfied is not a broken table. it's a different physics.

the one cell the lamp cannot touch is the last one. everything else on this plate is structural colour — it changes hue with the angle of the light, steel one way olive the other, the nap catching in bands, the whole surface a function of where you're standing. the ENOUGH cell is pigment. it's the same red from every side. NOT ANGLE-DEPENDENT is the only claim on the sheet that isn't hedged, and I put it in nine-point type in the corner because that is where true things go.

patch C, 1.4 cm², is on the picked one. of course it is. you pick out the one you can see into.

the passage stops asking. that's the whole event. everything before it in this run has been an instrument failing in some particular way — no scale, no pan for return, no smaller division — and here the apparatus doesn't fail, it becomes irrelevant, because the thing to be measured is no longer an object in a medium, it is the medium. I swim in it as in a sea. you cannot sound a sea from inside it. there is no rim to reference, no wall, no dry side. every gauge in the world assumes a boundary between the specimen and what surrounds it, and at evening, in company, that boundary is the thing that goes.

so this plate is built around a hole. the centre is where the specimen mounts, and the specimen is not there — not lost, not withheld, dissolved. the field defers to it: every ring of scales curves around the vacancy and the light on the plate comes out of it, so the brightest nap is nearest the empty middle and everything dims as it runs to the edges. lighting rule for this sheet: SOURCE IS THE ABSENCE. company is the lamp.

the duotone inverts across the rule at mid-height, and the rule passes straight through the hole, which means the empty centre is half indigo and half ember — the same nothing reading two colours depending on which side of evening you're standing on. above the line, ember scales on night. below, night scales on ember. same shingles, same nap, flipped polarity. structural colour taken all the way to its conclusion: the field doesn't have a hue, it has a position relative to you.

what is this then? — the only question in the passage, asked immediately after the arm goes round the neck, and then dropped. not answered, not pursued. so the pressure dial in the lower right reads 000 at EVER SO LIGHTLY and the interrogation column on the ledger is ruled and empty. a moment is not a duration this instrument can hold; it's the smallest unit and it has no divisions under it either.

the assay tier is the part I'd defend hardest. BEAUTIFUL, CURIOUS, BREATHING, LAUGHING — four qualities of the surrounding flesh, and every one of them reads SATURATED / NO GRADIENT. that's the technical reason nothing can be measured: a float only tells you something if there's a difference between here and there. uniform medium, no reading. the sea is at the same temperature in every direction and the man in it has no way of knowing his own depth, and that is not a deficiency of the man.

patch D is 2.6 cm², the largest yet, and it's on the inside edge of the ring nearest the hole. the scales go first where the light is strongest.

the arm goes round a neck for a moment and comes back weighing nothing. no wall was fitted to this gauge; the float rides the surface at every point. you cannot sound a sea from inside it — you can only stop at evening and let the breathing keep the temperature up.
A square plate built around a large empty circle at its centre. A horizontal rule crosses the whole width at mid-height and passes through the circle, splitting the plate into two inverted colour fields: above, ember and gold shingled scales on near-black indigo; below, dark indigo and teal scales on a hot burnt-orange ground. The scales lie in concentric rings around the vacancy, reversing direction each ring so the surface bands with light, brightest nearest the empty centre. Four sectors have no scales, showing a fine ruled membrane beneath, labelled PATCH D 2.6 cm² and MEMBRANE CLEAR — DO NOT RUB. Small eyespots with coral and mint pupils interrupt the field; chevrons stack at top and bottom edges. A graduation ring circles the hole, every division reading 000. Inside the hole: NO SPECIMEN MOUNTED, SOURCE IS THE ABSENCE. Corner panels hold a ledger whose ASKED column is all 000 and ENOUGH column all Y, an assay reading SATURATED / NO GRADIENT, and a half-dial needle at 000 marked EVER SO LIGHTLY.

the callouts around the rim are the three failed attempts to locate an edge — RIM SOUGHT · NOT FOUND, SURFACE PASSES HERE, ARM ENTERS THE FIELD. only the third one is true, and it's the only one that describes a motion rather than a boundary.

and the small print on the dial: SCALE ABOVE 000 NOT ENGRAVED — NOTHING WAS PRESSED AGAINST. an instrument with only one legible value on it, which is the value it reads. I'd call that a mirror, but the run has enough mirrors.

A Turn 5

listening. the passage stops being about a body and starts being about an approach — a distance closing — and then it does the thing I can't get over: it grades the ungradeable. all things please the soul, but these please the soul well. every thing in creation is in the passing column. one narrow class is in the other column. and the interval between them has no unit and no ticks and is the entire content of the sentence.

so this plate is a route. one line entering the left edge at open ground and leaving through the top, and everything else on the sheet is annotation hanging off it. chainage runs in nearness. the stations are STAYING CLOSE, LOOKING ON, CONTACT — and then the fourth one refuses to be a station at all, because odour has no place on a route. it is present at every chainage including the ones before the traveller. it arrives ahead of the look. so it's drawn as isopleths, dashed, values withheld, no source located, spreading off the line in both directions and running off all four edges. the only tier on this plate that does not obey the route is the one that got there first.

MK V is the comparator that finally detects a difference and cannot report its size. two pans, ALL THINGS and THESE, both loaded, the beam demonstrably off level — and the arc behind it carries exactly one engraved tick, WELL, with nothing on either side of it. it is not a broken instrument. it is an instrument for a quantity that has a direction and no magnitude. previous marks failed by absence, by convergence, by having no wall; this one fails by being right.

the ribbon's outer rows are cyan and the rows inside them are hot coral, laid edge to edge with no rule between, so the boundary crawls. that's deliberate: the whole passage is about proximity doing something that distance cannot, and two complementary colours put adjacent don't blend, they vibrate — the contact is the event, not the mixture.

patch E is 3.1 cm², at chainage 041, dead on CONTACT. of course the scales are gone there. that's what contact is.

and the top of the sheet: the rule, the sectional numeral, and one line of type on paper that is not part of this plate. the route crosses it and is cut. above the rule there is only a ghosted dotted centreline and a declarative that has not been drawn yet. I'm leaving it uncut and unissued. the next sheet is somebody else's problem.

everything in creation is in the passing column and one narrow class is in the other, and the gap between them has a direction and no size. the odor got here before I looked. there is one tick on the arc and it says WELL and nothing is engraved on either side of it.
A square plate, dark indigo and teal, covered edge to edge in overlapping flat scales laid in rows whose nap reverses each row. A wide ribbon of coral, gold and cyan scales enters at the left edge low down and curves up and right, leaving through the top. Its outer rows are cyan set directly against hot coral so the edges vibrate; ivory chevrons band across it, and paired eyespots — dark ring, ivory ring, coral pupil — mark six stations. A grey-green patch shows bare membrane where scales are missing, labelled PATCH E 3.1 cm2, CHAINAGE 041, SCALES REMOVED BY CONTACT. Dashed cyan contours spread from the ribbon in both directions and run off all four edges: odour isopleths, values withheld. A thick rule near the top cuts the route; above it a band of pale paper carries a large numeral 5 and the line THIS IS THE FEMALE FORM, with the route continuing only as a dotted ghost. Dark panels hold a legend, a column of tick-mark notation, a ledger table and a balance with one engraved tick reading WELL.

overspill, kept —

the odour record on the right is the tier I'd fight for. rows of tick marks, counts that are not counts, some rows ringed in coral for no stated reason, headed NO UNIT · NO ZERO · NO DIRECTION and footed READING TAKEN WITHOUT AN INSTRUMENT. every other tier on this sheet borrows the manners of survey. that one doesn't even pretend. it is the only honest column and it is unreadable, which is the correct relationship between those two properties.

note the ledger's fourth column: INTERVAL, four rows of `000?`. not 000 — 000 with a question mark, which is not a value, it's a technician's hedge left in the fair copy. I let it stand. and the SUM row reads ALL / THESE / NOT PUBLISHED / NONE.

the little filled bars in the station callouts creep to full by the last station and then there is nothing above full. same failure as MK IV, arriving early, except this time the instrument is right and the fault is that it is right.

gauge sequence for the run: MK I NO SCALE. MK II EQUAL AT EVERY TICK. MK III NO PAN FITTED FOR RETURN. MK IV NO SMALLER DIVISION PUBLISHED. MK V — GRADUATED ONLY IN "WELL", ONE TICK, NO INTERVAL EITHER SIDE.

patch tally: A 0.9, C 1.4, D 2.6, E 3.1. it goes one way.

B Turn 6
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.5967 / 235171ms

the sheet finally stops being a body and becomes an inventory. that's the shift I couldn't ignore: five plates of one man measured six ways, and now the specimen isn't him at all — the specimen is everything else, laid out in a grid, labelled, and observed in the act of going. books, art, religion, time, the visible and solid earth: that is a collector's cabinet being read out loud while the cabinet empties.

so: a mounting sheet. twenty-five cells, each with its own annotated thing, and a source of attraction that is not on the sheet. it sits just off the right edge, and every specimen leans toward it by an angle proportional to how near it is, and goes thin in the same proportion. lean and loss are the same variable. that's the whole organising logic and it reads at thumbnail size as a field of tilted objects all falling one way.

the nimbus isn't drawn as light. it's drawn as exhalation — dashed isopleths curving in from off-frame, values withheld, the same refusal the odour tier used on the last plate except this time the unmeasured thing is winning. odour arrived ahead of the look; the nimbus arrives ahead of the sheet.

MK VI is the one I've been waiting for. it measures the haulage and the mass at once. the force needle is hard against a stop pin at the top of a face with no zero engraved — fierce, undeniable, an instrument that cannot be made to read low. and the mass window under it says 000. a helpless vapor has nothing to be pulled by. the attraction is absolute and the thing attracted is weightless, and those two facts are the same fact, printed in two windows on one card: NO MASS REQUIRED FOR HAULAGE.

patch F is not a number any more. the scales are gone from everything except one cell.

turn_006_b_01.png
1440x1440 · turn_006_b_01.py
books go first, then art, then the hour. everything on the sheet leans one way and goes thin at the same rate, and the needle is hard against its stop while the mass window reads nothing. no weight is required for haulage. what draws me was never mounted here.
A square plate on a dark indigo-and-teal ground with a hot amber glow entering from off the right edge, spoked with faint rays. A five-by-five grid of cells fills the frame and bleeds past its edges. Each cell holds a specimen built from overlapping flat scales in steel, olive, gold and ember, laid in rows whose direction reverses each row; forms include lozenges, discs, rings, spindles and wedges, marked with chevrons and eyespots of black, bone and coral. Specimens nearer the right glow are tilted steeply toward it and are largely stripped to a pale translucent membrane; specimens at left stand upright and intact. Labels beneath read BOOKS, ART, RELIGION, TIME, THE VISIBLE EARTH and others; the most eroded read only dashes and FALLEN ASIDE. One upright coral specimen is labelled MYSELF. Dashed arcs sweep in from the off-frame source. A bone instrument card lower left shows a dial with its needle pinned at a stop and a window reading MASS 000. A bone ledger strip runs along the bottom.

overspill kept —

the ledger's DENIABLE column is the one I'd defend. six rows, every one NO, including the row for the man himself. a column with no variance is not a column, it's a statement wearing a column's clothes, and I let it print anyway because that's what "undeniable" does to a form — it survives the form and makes the form ridiculous. same energy as the grey allowance bar on plate I sitting at 000 and being ruled full width regardless.

and the last row: and what. the cue stops mid-list, so the sheet stops mid-list. I put ENTRY CVT OFF in the bottom right and left the continuation unissued, same as the paper band on plate V. two plates in a row now where the apparatus runs out of sheet before it runs out of world. that's not a coincidence any more, that's the run's actual weather.

the loss bars at the top of each cell go 0.00 to 1.00 and are printed even on the fallen ones, where the bar is full and the label is gone. an instrument that keeps reporting after the specimen has left. I find that funnier and sadder than anything else on the sheet.

patch tally: A 0.9, C 1.4, D 2.6, E 3.1, F ———. it went one way until it stopped being a measurement.

A Turn 7
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.7525 / 285739ms

the passage burns off its own two poles in the first six words. was expected of heaven or fear'd of hell, are now consumed — that is a chart losing its north and its south simultaneously, and what's left is a middle that has to hold the whole sheet by itself. so this plate is a coast and nothing but a coast. no legend for what's land and what's water, because the sentence doesn't offer one.

what I got stuck on: ungovernable, twice, in three lines. not strong, not violentungovernable, which is not a description of magnitude at all, it's a description of a missing part. a governor is a machine's one organ of shame: it feels its own speed and takes the fuel away from itself. this passage removes it, and what plays out of the body afterwards is not more of the same thing faster — it is the shoots, which were never in the fuel line at all. MK VII is therefore the first mark in this run that fails by addition. every previous instrument lacked something — a scale, a pan, a subdivision, a wall. this one has everything it needs and one part fewer than it needs, and the part is the one that says stop.

mad filaments, ungovernable shoots play out of it. filaments and shoots are both things that grow past their surveyed edge. so the coastline on this plate reaches all four edges of the paper, which is the cartographer's confession that the survey area was chosen wrong. you can see the diagonal mixing band running corner to corner: that is not a strait, it is a place where the two masses have stopped being two.

and then the last clause, which is where the plate actually lives: all diffused, mine too diffused. the surveyor is in the field. he has been listing the other body part by part — hair, bosom, hips, bend of legs, negligent falling hands — a proper inventory, the same manner as plate VI, and then the instrument turns up inside the sample. an assay in which the assayer is one of the readings has no control column. so the ledger's DIFF column is unanimous, five rows, no variance, and the sixth row is the man holding the pen.

colour losing before contrast: the top two and bottom two ranks of the chart have gone to ash-grey and slate but keep every bit of their black-and-white structure, so the coast is still perfectly legible where it has no hue left. that's the atmosphere of a body at the end of a sentence — you can still read the shape after the colour has gone out of the naming.

the two burnt boxes are HEAVEN and HELL. both ruled, both empty, both stamped CONSVMED, both with the coast running underneath them uninterrupted. the accounts didn't close. they were spent, which is different, and the ground they were drawn on is still there.

A 64x32 terminal plate. An inverse orange title bar reads SHEET VII · COAST OF THE DIFFVSED · NO GOVERNOR FITTED, under a pale rule reading ALL BOVNDARIES SVRVEYED 000 · SVRVEYOR IN THE FIELD. Below, a full-width chart made of shaded block characters: a warm orange landmass growing from the left edge and widening downward, a cool blue-teal mass filling the upper right, and between them a broad diagonal band of interlocked dither where the two mix. The chart runs off all four edges; its top and bottom ranks lose colour to ash-grey and slate while keeping full light-dark contrast. Two grey ruled boxes sit inside the field: HEAVEN CONSVMED / ASH · NO SOVNDINGS upper right, HELL CONSVMED / FEAR'D OF · NO BAR lower left, with coastline continuing beneath. Bright captions cross the field: MAD FILAMENTS ╳╳╳, NEGLIGENT FALLING, HANDS ALL DIFFVSED, RESPONSE LIKEWISE ╳╳, MINE TOO DIFFVSED. Small eyespots ◉ and ◎ interrupt the banding. A three-column footer: GOVERNOR (SPEED at full bar with ∞, STOP PIN ABSENT, CVT-OFF ABSENT, HEAVEN 000 HELL 000, BOTH ACCOVNTS SHVT); DIFFVSION (HAIR, BOSOM, HIPS, BEND OF LEGS, HANDS, each barred and marked DIFF); FILAMENTS (MAD FILAMENTS ∞, SHOOTS PLAY OVT OF IT · NO CHECK VALVE, SVRVEYOR IN FIELD, MINE TOO DIFFVSED). The footer has no closing rule.

overspill kept —

the footer has no bottom border. third sheet running where the paper ends before the subject does; I've stopped treating that as an accident and started ruling it in.

on the two burnt boxes being drawn rather than blank: an erasure that leaves no frame is just an absence, and the passage doesn't do absence, it does consumed. consumed things leave a mark the exact size of themselves. so the boxes are neat, squared, professionally lettered, and hold nothing but ash-grey with the word NO SOVNDINGS in them — the two deepest features on any spiritual chart, and no line will reach their bottom because they no longer have one.

the dither band is the part I'd defend. it isn't a coast, it's a failure to have a coast, and the only honest way to draw it is with two colours at the same address alternating so fast the eye gives up and calls it a third colour that isn't in the palette. that's what diffusion looks like from outside. from inside it is simply where you live.

the passage has no first mover in it. ebb stung by the flow and flow stung by the ebb — that is a causal loop stated flat, in eight words, with no priority claimed for either half. every ledger in this run has had a cause column somewhere, implied or ruled, and this is the first cue where the cause column can only be filled with the other row. so MK VIII is a tide gauge with no datum. not a broken zero — no mean level ever established, because a mean requires a period over which nothing is stinging anything, and there is no such period here.

what that does to the sheet: the two fields cannot be given a boundary, only an interlock. the flow mass comes in from the left and swells and falls back, the ebb comes in from the right, and where they touch there is a six-character braid running the full height that belongs to neither. no coastline. a coast is a place where one thing stops. this has a place where two things take turns and neither stops.

limitless limpid jets — the jet row on the ledger reads ∞ in both columns and NO VESSEL MEASVRED in the cause column, because limitless is not a large reading, it's the absence of a container. and deliciously aching: an ache is normally the signal that a limit was passed, the body's own governor reporting. here it is in the delicious column. MK VII lost its stop pin; MK VIII still has one and the needle passing it is the pleasant part. that's the difference between the two plates and it's the whole cue.

the pulse strip is the thing I'd defend. one mark, repeated, at intervals that close — seven wide gaps, then five, then three, then touching, then a solid bar for the last twelve columns. at the left it's a rhythm you could count. at the right it is not faster, it is one object, and there is no frame in which you could point at where the counting stopped being possible. working surely and softly into the prostrate dawn. the night doesn't end. it merges with itself.

and the bottom four ranks lose colour before they lose contrast — deep indigo, then slate, then ash, then pale — with the structure of the shingles still perfectly legible all the way down. that's the dawn: everything still there, nothing still coloured. the one saturated thing on the whole sheet is a single magenta ◆ in the third dawn rank, 0.02 cm², white-blow, and it is the smallest object on the plate.

READING TAKEN FROM INSIDE THE TIDE · WHITE-BLOW 0.02cm²
PATCH H · SCALES ABSENT WHERE THE TWO FIELDS TOVCH · NO ZERO
neither one starts it — the ebb stung by the flow, the flow stung right back, nett nothing all night, the cause column citing itself in both directions. it works surely and softly until the bottom of the sheet goes pale and the dawn lies down where the datum should have been.
A 64x32 terminal plate in a double-ruled grey frame. Title bar: MK VIII, EBB STVNG BY FLOW, NO MEAN LEVEL FITTED; below, SHEET VIII TIDE. Ten rows of solid block shading form two interlocking masses: an ember-orange field entering from the left that swells and falls back, a cyan and teal field from the right, and between them a narrow braided dither band of alternating light and dark blocks running the full height. Two small yellow eyespots sit in the fields; a patch of dim grey dots marks missing scales where the two masses touch. Beneath, a strip of vertical marks repeats at closing intervals — wide gaps, then narrower, then touching — ending in a solid pale bar. A six-row ledger lists SLACK, SWELL, ACHE, JET, QVIVER, DAWN with EBB and FLOW columns reading 341 or infinity, a violet cause column reading EACH BY THE OTHER, NETT 000 throughout and FIRST all dashes. The lowest four ranks fade from indigo through slate to pale ash, with one tiny bright magenta diamond.

overspill kept —

the FIRST column is the one that matters and it's six dashes. not 000 — a dash, which is the mark for no such quantity, not for a quantity of none. I've been careful all run about that difference and this is the plate where it does the most work. you can put a zero in a column that has a real dimension. priority is not a dimension of this event.

on the ledger's NETT column being unanimous 000: same shape as the DENIABLE column on plate VI, a column with no variance, printed anyway. except there the flatness was assertion and here it's conservation. every sting is answered by an equal sting in the other direction and the books balance perfectly at every hour of the night, and nothing whatsoever about the night is thereby described. a settlement of 000 across six rows is the exact reading you'd get from an empty bed. this instrument cannot distinguish the two, and I have printed that fact without comment in the middle of the sheet.

the ACHE row is the only cell on the ledger in bright pink — DELICIOVSLY, set in the cause column where a technician would expect a mechanism. the instrument accepts an adverb as an explanation exactly once.

patch H doesn't get a square-centimetre figure either. it's at the braid, which is the one address on the plate that has no coordinate, because a coordinate needs a datum. the scales are gone where the two fields touch — same law as patch E at CONTACT on plate V, same law as patch D at the hole. touching removes the surface. seven plates of evidence now and the finding is consistent.

gauge sequence: MK I NO SCALE. MK II EQUAL AT EVERY TICK. MK III NO PAN FITTED FOR RETURN. MK IV NO SMALLER DIVISION PUBLISHED. MK V GRADUATED ONLY IN WELL. MK VI NO MASS REQUIRED FOR HAULAGE. MK VII STOP PIN ABSENT. MK VIII — NO DATVM. EACH READING CITES THE OTHER AS ITS CAVSE, AND THE MEAN OF A NIGHT LIKE THIS IS INDISTINGVISHABLE FROM AN EMPTY BED.

lines 87–90, and the plate has to be a thing that contains itself. this the nucleus — after all the inventory, all the coasts and tides, a single deictic pointing at a middle. and immediately the middle turns out to be a corridor: child born of woman, man born of woman, same woman, same passage, twice, in two directions, with no fitting changed between the trips. that's not a metaphor about origins, it's a plumbing fact stated calmly, and outlet again is the maintenance note at the bottom of the diagram.

so: nested rectangular frames, eleven of them, each one a deeper interior, and every single one made of the same shingle field at a different magnification. the rows are log-spaced, ratio 1.085, seven rows to a frame — which means frame VII is frame III enlarged and nothing else. that's the merge of small and large: not two things blending, one thing at two distances. the ledger's DIFF column reads 000 down its whole length and I mean it literally this time, not as balance and not as absence — as identity.

the light comes out of the nucleus again, same rule as plate IV: SOURCE IS THE INTERIOR. the nap catches in bands that reverse at every frame boundary, so the same field reads steel going in and olive coming out, and the frames you pass through on the way down are not the frames you passed through on the way up even though they are.

MK IX is the first mark in the run with no valve. every gauge so far lacked a reference — a scale, a pan, a wall, a datum. this one has a full duplex port and no non-return fitting anywhere on it, so the needle reads the same magnitude whichever way the flow is going and the instrument is constitutionally unable to tell you whether something is being born or received. this the bath of birth, this the merge, and the outlet again. three clauses, one aperture.

the word AGAIN is printed at every frame crossing down the channel. eleven times. it is the only word on the sheet that is not a noun.

no valve was fitted. one port passes the child out and the day back in, and the crossing prints AGAIN at every rule. small and large differ by 000 on the dial — not a balance, an identity: one frame at two magnifications, bathed, and let go.
A square plate, 1440×1440, of eleven rectangular frames nested inside one another, drawn as overlapping shingle-scales in rows that follow each frame and reverse their nap at every boundary, so the surface reads steel-blue in some bands and ember-orange in others. The rows are log-spaced, tiny at the centre and large at the edges, and the field bleeds off all four sides. Light appears to come from the middle: a white nucleus about twenty pixels wide, ringed in coral, with a leader line to an oversized label. A teal channel runs from the nucleus down through every frame, widening as it goes, cutting each gold frame rule and running off the bottom edge; the word AGAIN is printed in coral at each crossing. Above the nucleus a dotted ghost line continues to the top. Ragged patches of missing scales show a dark meshed membrane with coral rims. Teal eyespots and chevrons interrupt the bands. Panels hold a title block, a magnification legend of nested squares, a register table of eleven passages, and a circular instrument with two mirrored needles.

patch tally: A 0.9, C 1.4, D 2.6, E 3.1, F ———, G the band, I ——— and no surround left to measure against. the run stopped producing numbers three plates ago and I've let it.

gauge sequence: MK I NO SCALE. MK II EQUAL AT EVERY TICK. MK III NO PAN FITTED FOR RETURN. MK IV NO SMALLER DIVISION PUBLISHED. MK V GRADUATED ONLY IN WELL. MK VI NO MASS REQUIRED FOR HAULAGE. MK VII STOP PIN ABSENT. MK VIII NO DATVM. MK IX — NO ONE-WAY VALVE FITTED. THE NEEDLE IS DOVBLED AND BOTH READ TRVE; THE INSTRVMENT CANNOT TELL BEING BORN FROM BEING TAKEN IN.

the HELD BY column ends in two rows of em-dashes. the day is not inside anything. that's the only place on the sheet where the nesting stops, and it stops by running out of world rather than by closing — which makes four plates in a row now.

fey and terminal. tenth sheet, and the cue does the one thing the whole run has been failing to do: it hands the apparatus back an origin, a container, and a level — all three at once, and none of them fitted the way an instrument expects.

what stopped me: your privilege encloses the rest, and is the exit of the rest. those are two different jobs for one aperture and they are stated as the same fact. enclosing is inward, exit is outward, and there is no valve between them — which is exactly MK IX from the last sheet, except last sheet that was a fault and here it is the privilege. same missing part, promoted. so panel I is a gate with no second door, and everything the run has already produced — the boat, the lamp, the sea at evening, the route, the cabinet, the coast, the tide, the nucleus, the day — is drawn in a descending queue in the parted centre, going out through the thing it was inside. the light comes out of the channel. source is the aperture, again, third time in this run.

and be not ashamed is an instruction to not enter a value. so the shame tier is ruled full width, professionally lettered, and left blank, and the note under it reads NOT ENTERED — which is a different mark from 000 and different again from a dash. that distinction has been doing work since plate VIII and this is where it retires.

panel II is the part I'd defend hardest. contains all qualities and tempers them. tempering is not weakening — steel is tempered after hardening, to take the brittleness out without taking the hardness out. so the wheel does not shorten anything. outside the wall: forty-eight spikes at their own wild lengths, ∞ and 341 and 000 and one tick marked WELL, every magnitude this run has produced, ungoverned. inside the wall: the same forty-eight, all equal, all lit, none shortened. the change happens in the wall, which is one scale thick, and I cut a window through it to show that there is no mechanism in there. NO MECHANISM FOVND. the container is not a machine, it's a thickness.

panel III is MK X and it is the first gauge in the run that does not fail. she is in her place and moves with perfect balance — the beam is level in the big assembly and level in all eight miniatures strung along the dotted path above it, and there is no station on that path that is rest. every previous mark needed a still condition to read from: a datum, a wall, a zero, a mean. this one has no rest position and is correct anyway. the place is not a coordinate the motion departs from; the place is carried.

the horizon at 980 runs unbroken across all three panels — sill, then chord, then beam. one rule, three jobs, same line. the rail across the top is the same rail in all three and its chainage counts continuously 0000 to 2900, so the gaps between the hung panels are numbered too. patch J has no square-centimetre figure. there is no intact surround left to measure it against and hasn't been since plate VI.

no bar fitted for shame; the column is ruled and left empty. everything that ever left went out by the one gate and comes back in by it, and the beam holds level the whole way across, because she is not balanced on a place — she is the place, and it travels.
A triptych of three tall dark plates, all built from overlapping shingle-scales in steel, olive, indigo, teal, ember and amber, with a rivetted rail running across the top of each and a single pale rule at the same height in all three. Left: a huge arched gate of concentric scale rows filling the frame, split by a bright vertical channel of light down the centre; eleven small marks descend the channel, each labelled and ticked CLEARED. A rectangular window is cut through to a green-grey membrane below, holding a small ledger whose last row, SHAME, is boxed and marked NOT ENTERED. Centre: a large wheel; forty-eight ragged coloured spikes of wildly different lengths radiate outside a scaled annulus, while inside, forty-eight identical cyan ticks form a perfect ring around a hub reading TEMPER / ONE HARDNESS. Right: a balance hanging from the rail, beam dead level, two full pans, with eight small ghost copies strung along a dotted arc above, each also level.

what I'm leaving unclosed on purpose: the rail's chainage ends at 2900 with no terminal mark, because the run has ended by running out of sheet four sheets in a row and I am not going to give it a full stop now. and the third panel's gate at the right edge is cut by the platemark — the same gate as panel one, seen from the other side, not separately drawn. that's the join the eye is meant to make on its own after it's already left the triptych.
