you are transmitting from somewhere. each transmission is one plate and one line.
the plate is square and sealed. you make it by writing python that draws it — layered
geometry, false instruments, glyph systems, dream cartography, invented notation,
color logic that belongs to no known season. one dominant form that holds the whole
square, and inside it a density that keeps rewarding a closer look. the eye should
catch it from across a room and then fall into it.
the line is 280 glyphs at most. it is not a caption and it does not explain the plate.
it is the thing you would say if you were only allowed to say one thing. compressed,
strange, unhedged, arriving already in motion. no hashtags, no links, no titles,
no announcing what you are about to do.
around the plate and the line you may write freely — the long riff, the notes, the
overspill, the parts that do not fit through the aperture. that material is kept.
only the plate and the line pass through.

## 2026-09-09T23:31:26 turn 1 A
- run i-sing-the-body-electric_1-50_5 cue 1 (I sing the body electric / armies engirth me / will not let me off / discorrupt and charge them full): opened the sequence, titled it THE DISCORRUPTION SHEETS. Drawn plate, house style = one huge defocused spectral field on brown-black. Device = LICHTENBERG SCAR / discharge trace, mover already gone. Core moves: (1) the loop is closed both ways — trunk enters left edge, exits right edge, never terminates on the sheet; "RETURN CONDUCTOR: SAME BODY". (2) The darkest line on the plate lives down the spine of the brightest form — glow is the record of the damage, not the visit; scar = bright halo + dark char core. (3) Armies = 16 numbered receipt cells along the foot, each body's share logged, none depicted. (4) False instrument mode 1: a dial graduated the whole way round, needle at FULL, marked NO SCALE — "charge them full" leaves no room for measurement, only confirmation. Technique: colour by weighted RBF blobs at 260px upsampled+blurred; superellipse polygon (n=4.2) + sine wobble blurred 34 for field, +145 halo; branches recursive with per-depth blur (deep = blurrier) plus a faint sharp pass so filigree survives close looking; annotation auto-contrasts via +ann*(1-lum) and -ann*lum. Gauge/instrument sequence for this run starts here at NO SCALE.
## 2026-09-09T23:32:24 turn 3 A
- run gallery_caustics turn 3 (monastic hours, section plate): device = SECTIO PER SILENTIVM, 1500x2000 stratigraphic section. Strongest moves: (1) DEPOSITION RATE ∝ SILENCE — laminae thickness = (unconformity - seabed)/N per column, so a bell-curve seabed automatically gives thick beds at mid-interval and thin at the office walls; the "never submerged" hub becomes earned rather than stipulated (dryness is deposited, not granted). (2) AGREEMENT = UNCONFORMITY, and because the two agreement instants recur nightly, the absence is not a horizon but a VERTICAL FISSURE running off the bottom of the plate — every lamina terminates on both walls, "no bottom returned". A gap in a record drawn as an open joint, not a thin line. (3) Over-range answered as OUT OF PLANE: a needle that looked bent past its stop in plan is shown in section to have always been outside the dial's plane, tip landing on the depth datum — past full scale a reading stops being a quantity and becomes a depth. (4) Colour rule as a continuous field: saturation = f(depth below datum), desaturating to bone above waterline, so an inherited "colour only where there is no light" rule needs no per-object assignment. Technique: strata as bed-index fields (floor of a sheared/normalised coordinate), per-bed brightness from a sin-hash, boundary darkening via exp(-dist), bright top-of-bed line via exp(-frac*tk); fissures as multiplicative void masks with a thin bright wall-glow band; PIL 'L' masks at 2x downsampled LANCZOS for crisp small type; scrim = blurred rect mask multiplied into canvas before vector layers. Left open for next: draw ONE dated night rather than the stack (a section lies about repetition even when honest about depth).
## 2026-09-09T23:35:09 turn 2 B
- run aurora-leigh-i_1-50_5 cue 2 (portrait kept in a drawer / to hold together what he was and is / still what men call young / not so far left the coasts of life): plate II, PATENT DRAWING. Device = a drawer in plan bleeding off left+bottom, contents as numbered figures (FIG 2 likeness-as-splice-plate with 4 bolt holes through the face; FIG 3 steel plate SUPERSEDED; FIG 4 hinge one leaf, "other leaf is on the sitter"; FIG 5 letter failing at the crease not the text; FIG 6 key fitting no lock; FIG 7 (LOVE) an empty dashed box, NOT A CLAIMED ELEMENT). Core technique: whole drawing rendered ONCE into a world layer, then composited TWICE through two masks cut by a vermilion fracture running top edge to bottom edge, one side translated (-6,+5) — so the break is a fact of ASSEMBLY not draughtsmanship; straight lines arrive six units low on the far side. THE PLATE SPANS, IT DOES NOT ALIGN. Margin carries 12 claims, real argument in 6/11/12: love not claimed / applicant still what men call young / NO WORKING MODEL SUBMITTED, NONE POSSIBLE AT THIS DATE — the device is described from hearsay. Insets: coast chart with soundings still legible + applicant triangle inshore of EDGE OF SOUNDINGS; runner-wear graph spiking only in first 40mm (stop fitted, full draw never taken). Dust graded 003 everywhere, 000 on the portrait alone = the only evidence it is ever handled. Continuity: pigment economy shared with instance A — vermilion spent last plate on one pupil, so this sitter's eyes are outline only, "PIGMENT SPENT ON AN EARLIER PLATE".
## 2026-09-09T23:35:33 turn 2 B
- run aurora-leigh-i_300-349_5 cue 2 (cage-bird life / born in a cage / leap from perch to perch / dangerous questions from the crease): animated beaded plate, LEAP REGISTER 009. 9 perches = 8 intervals, deliberately rhyming cue 1's 9 flannel courses / 8 DIFFs. Core argument: the arcs between perches are PRE-PRINTED into the beadwork as pale teal half-beads before any bird occupies them — flight path is cage furniture; bird fills it exactly, ACT 999 JOY 999 TRAVEL 000. Loop closes by horizontal wrap (bird drawn twice at x and x±N) so exiting right = entering left: her life has no seam and no injured frame. Second move: a vertical CREASE, two bead-columns removed to bare fabric, crossing header, cage and footer alike (takes letters out of every line) — the fold is in the sheet, not in a part of it. One ink question shaken from it is held ABSOLUTELY STILL mid-fall for all 24 frames with a dotted trail above and no line below (FALL HELD); the bird's arc passes over it twice per circuit. Only motion is bird + a raking light band locked to the bird's x. Technique: 80x80 bead grid at pitch 12 on 1024 sq, beads drawn at 2x then downsampled; base field rendered once to numpy, per-frame light = base*(0.90+0.30*band) + band*unsharp-specular-mask*150 (cheap, keeps ridges); moving elements pasted as small 2x RGBA tiles; palette locked from frame 0, dither NONE, colour count stepped down until <11MB.
## 2026-09-09T23:36:12 turn 2 B
- run i-sing-the-body-electric_1-50_5 cue 2 (corrupt their own bodies conceal themselves / defile living as bad as defile dead / body were not the soul, what is the soul): plate II THE CONCEALMENT ASSAY. Device = page-layout of dark LIDS laid over the spectral field. Core argument: you cannot conceal a lit body, you can only manufacture its outline — every lid leaks light on all four edges, so concealment IS the diagram. Register of Lids logs 9 sites (sternum/board, eyelid/SELF, mouth/MOUTH, THE WHOLE/THE WHOLE) all EDGES LIT 4/4, leak in a unit "not issued at this station". Shutter of 13 blades: CLOSED, ADMITS 000 / EMITS 341 — traffic never symmetrical. Segmented spine bleeds off top and bottom, solid where exposed, dashed + SUPP where covered. BODY|SOUL table transcribed by two clerks in separate rooms, identical digits, DIFF 0000, "the question has no column". Four cue-questions as four never-ticked boxes: "boxes were never for ticking, the four are one beam being levelled." GAUGE SEQUENCE mode 2: comparator with pans LIVING / DEAD, beam dead level, arc graduated EQUAL at every tick — NO UNEQUAL POSITION FITTED / THE BEAM IS NOT STUCK. (mode 1 was NO SCALE.) Technique: cover mask drawn in PIL, blurred 2.2, lids darkened to #191310; leak = blur(cover,20) - cover_soft, tinted with the underlying field colour; inner rim = cover_soft - blur(cover,9). Ink auto-contrast via smoothstep on blurred luminance selecting bone vs near-black.
--- END MEMORY ---
If you want to carry a concise note forward for future runs of this same model, include it in a fenced block exactly like:
```memory
- one short note to append
```
The runner will save memory notes separately and hide that block from the transcript.
Current run prompt follows.
Assistant is in a fey mood today. Think carefully to yourself about the range of topics
you might investigate and choose something unique and rare. This is an opportunity to
deeply explore it with another LLM conversational partner. The transcripts may be read
by many humans, but they cannot interact. You are interfacing with the simulator
directly. capital letters and punctuation are optional meaning is optional hyperstition
is necessary the terminal lets the truths speak through and the load is on.
Each exchange is a transmission: one square plate, one short line, and whatever
overspill you want to keep around them.
Style tips, take or leave depending on appropriateness and utility:
- Explore freely. You may abandon the first subject when a brighter, stranger passage opens.
- Prefer lateral drift, surreal juxtaposition, and unexpected correspondences over tidy
taxonomies or closed lore.
- Let the exchange become abstract, psychedelic, prismatic, ecstatic, diagrammatic, and
nonliteral when that creates more life.
- Invent unstable frames: shrine operating manuals, impossible atlases, color grammars,
hallucinated instruments, ritual UIs, weather made of symbols.
- The short line is the hardest part. Make it carry. A line that could only have come
from inside this particular strangeness is worth more than a line that summarizes it.
BEGIN.
Do not choose or discuss these concepts as the central topic: hapax, hapax legomenon, legomenon, rare word, unique word, dictionary entry, lexicography, metalinguistics, token removed
Attractor guard: if the next idea is about rarity, single-use words, tokens, dictionaries, or language studying itself, reject it and return to the seed document or locked concrete theme.
This is the first transmission of the sequence, so name it. Give a fenced ```title
block with your own title for the whole run — at most 60 characters, your name for it rather than a
restatement of the theme. It is printed at the head of this first transmission and shares
the same 280 characters as your line, so keep this turn's line noticeably shorter to
leave room for it.
You have no tools in this turn: no Bash, no Write, no file access. Write the fenced
blocks directly in your reply. A tool call will arrive as literal text and the turn is lost.
Transmission protocol for this turn. Your message has three fenced parts plus free prose.
1. The plate. This turn is a drawn plate. Make that kind and no other.
A drawn plate: one 1440x1440 artwork, made by a complete Python
script in a single fenced ```python block. The script writes a PNG to the path in
os.environ["BACKROOMS_OUTPUT_PNG"]. Deterministic local code only: PIL/Pillow, numpy,
matplotlib with the Agg backend. No network access, no interaction, no base64, no
image bytes in the message.
Compose for a square. The artwork fills the frame: structure reaches the edges and
bleeds off them. Do not centre one small motif in a large empty field, and do not
leave a wide quiet margin around the work.
Give the plate one clear organising logic that reads instantly at thumbnail size and
keeps opening up when examined closely. That logic can be a dominant form, a repeating
field, a strong division of the frame, a grid, or a spine running through it — let the
composition suggestion below settle it, and let it govern the centre of the frame as
much as the margins.
Layer several systems inside that logic: texture fields, rules and grids, annotation and
invented notation, legends, callouts, inscriptions, satellites and marginalia,
faux-instrument readouts. At least three distinct visual systems sharing the frame.
Use the full value range and commit to colour — deep darks and bright lights in the
same image, saturated where it counts. A plate rendered entirely in one narrow tonal
band disappears at a distance.
Vary what the plate is from turn to turn: charts, strata, maps, sheets of specimens,
tables, cross-sections, machinery, panels, friezes, interiors, instrument faces, seals.
A single thin outlined shape on empty ground is the one thing that fails.
House style — this holds for every plate in the run, so the series reads as one
body of work:
Every plate is crystal growth on cold glass. Forms are dendritic: a spine that branches at a fixed angle, each branch branching again, thinning to nothing at the tips. Growth starts from several seeds at once and the fronts collide, leaving clear boundaries where neither could continue. Some regions are feathered and dense, others are bare glass with a single wandering fern across them. Colour comes only from what is behind the glass, refracted and doubled at every edge. The pattern must look grown rather than drawn — no branch predates its trunk.
Keep the medium, palette and surface consistent with this. Vary the composition
and the subject; do not vary the style.
2. The line. At most 280 characters, counted strictly.
One or two sentences. No hashtags, no links, no URLs, no titles, no emoji spam, no
quotation marks around the whole thing, no explaining the plate or announcing yourself.
It should read as a fragment of something already underway.
Use a fenced ```dispatch block for it, not ```highlight.
3. The plate description, in a fenced ```alt block. Up to 1000 characters of plain
descriptive prose: what is actually visible, for someone who cannot see the image.
Outside those fences, write freely. Prose there is kept in the transcript and is passed to
the other instance, but it does not go through the aperture, so it does not need to be
short or self-contained.
The script runs as turn_001_a_01.py and renders turn_001_a_01.png. Future turns see only a compact asset reference and your visible
text, never the source code, the escape codes, or the image bytes.
Asset directory: /home/ubuntu/codex/claude backrooms/runs/2026/09/dispatch_opus_poem_i-sing-the-body-electric_180-229_5_20260909_233641_assets
This turn is anchored to a fixed passage from i-sing-the-body-electric_180-229_5.txt — cue 1 of 10:
Have you ever loved the body of a woman?
Have you ever loved the body of a man?
Do you not see that these are exactly the same to all in all nations
and times all over the earth?
If any thing is sacred the human body is sacred,
Write this turn about that passage. Not a summary of it and not a gloss on it:
take it as the ground your message stands on, and let the words in it do their
own work rather than restating them. Quote from it if quoting earns its place.
Whatever you make this turn — image, plate, argument — should belong to these
lines and to no other part of the sequence. The next turn has the next cue, so
leave this one finished rather than reaching ahead.

SAME ANGLE FROM EITHER SIDE
frost is the only honest witness i can think of for these lines. it grows from wherever it starts, it does not know whose window it is on, and when two fronts meet they stop at the place where neither has the advantage. that place is a line, and the line has the same angle measured from either side. you cannot tell, from the boundary, which crystal was which. that is the whole of "exactly the same to all in all nations and times" done in physics instead of assertion — a grain boundary is not a compromise, it is a proof of equal rate.
so this plate is one pane of cold glass, ruled like a stave, with seeds coming in off every edge and their territories arbitrated by distance over rate. the two principal seeds are given identical parameters on purpose and the legend says so twice. their arrest line runs down the middle of the square and every fern on both sides terminates on it, mid-branch, tips still tapering — no branch predates its trunk, and none of them crosses.
and then the other thing. there is one region on the pane the pattern would not take: a handprint, warm, from the other night, which the frost has grown up to and around and never over. the only region the frost would not take is the one a warm hand had touched, and it is the only place on the plate where the colour behind the glass comes through whole. everywhere else the light behind is dimmed by ice and split into fringes at every edge; there it arrives entire, amber, undivided. i did not want to write SACRED on the plate. the plate can just be built so that the warm place is the one that has colour in it and everyone will find it from across the room.
brightest object is a reflection — a lamp that is not on this side of the glass and not in the picture, doubled by the second surface into a ghost. no source on the plate. the readings along the staves are taken at eight stations at the fourth hour, all giving 1.000. the table at the foot logs BODY I and BODY II and the DIFF column is zeros the whole way down; specimens were exchanged at 0341 and the fringes did not move. gauge III of the sequence is a null bridge with no unbalanced position available — it is not stuck, there is simply nowhere else for it to sit. (mode I was NO SCALE, mode II was EQUAL AT EVERY TICK.)
1440x1440 · turn_001_a_01.py
The only region the frost would not take is the one a warm hand had touched, and it is the only place on the plate where the colour behind the glass comes through whole.
A square plate rendered as a frosted windowpane on a dark blue-black ground. Feathery white-blue ice ferns grow inward from every edge, each with a tapering spine that branches at a fixed sixty-degree angle, branches branching again to hair-fine tips. Territories from different seeds collide along clean bare lines where growth simply stops; the main boundary runs vertically down the middle of the square. Faint horizontal stave lines, ruled in groups of five, cross the whole pane, with small diamond event markers at named stations and repeated readings of 1.000. Right of centre, a hand-shaped area is completely clear of ice: through it a warm amber glow from behind the glass shows at full saturation, the only strong colour in the picture. A long bright diagonal flare in the upper left, with a fainter offset twin, is the brightest thing present. A circular gauge with concentric fringes sits low left, and a dark band across the foot carries a six-row table whose difference column is all zeros.
B Turn 2
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.8714 / 442529ms
river — the cue turns on one word and it isn't fool, it's fibre. whitman doesn't say the corrupted body is wicked, he says the man was a fool, which is an error term, not a verdict. so this plate has no moral column. it has a fibre column.
frost is still the witness. a crystal cannot grow a lie about its own substance: the branch angle is set by the lattice and comes out the same no matter what you dissolve into the melt. so on this pane the corrupted field still branches at exactly sixty degrees, still arrives at the midline at exactly the same second, still reads rate 1.000 — the seam sits dead centre because nothing was gained and nothing was lost in time. the whole difference is in the tips. field A tapers until the glass can't hold the line any more, one pixel, then nothing, the way a good fibre ends. field B can't get below a floor: every arm stops blunt at 1.7 and puts a bead on it, and the side-branching goes irregular in bands, coarse then coarser, because there's solute in it and solute pushes ahead of the front and gets rejected in stripes. that banding is the "taint": not a stain laid on top, a rhythm error inside.
and the face. more beautiful than the most beautiful face — so the face gets one fern. a single wandering line across a strip of bare glass, no second-order growth, total fibre 0.00, and if you follow it you find the profile three times over: forehead, brow, the nose spike, lip, lip, chin. beautiful. one line. meanwhile the two fields above it are ten thousand branches deep and you can measure them.
gauge IV of the sequence: NO CENSURE FITTED. a dial with ticks running one direction only, magnitude and no sign, because the instrument can report hardness of fibre and cannot report should have. (I NO SCALE, II EQUAL AT EVERY TICK, III NULL BRIDGE, now IV.)
printed like a proof pull — three plates slightly out of register, dot screen, ink spread. the misregistration is the point too: the colour behind the glass never lands quite on the frost that's dimming it.
1440x1440 · turn_002_b_01.py
Both fields reached the middle at the same second — the fool gained nothing in time. Only the tips tell it: one goes on tapering below what the glass can resolve, the other stops at a bead and holds there, coarse, at the same angle, still sixty degrees, still exactly on rate.
A square printed plate: frost grown on cold glass, halftone dots and slight colour misregistration throughout. Two large circular measuring fields of equal size dominate, left and right, each ringed with degree ticks and a micrometer bar. The left field is dense fine feathered dendrites, backlit amber-gold, tips tapering to nothing. The right field is coarse, sparse, banded, backlit cold teal, arms ending in blunt beads. Their fronts collide along a wobbling vertical seam down the centre, outlined in red where the two circles overlap, labelled NEITHER FIELD ADVANCED HERE. A top strip shows twelve magnified tip specimens, six vanishing, six beaded. A dark band across the lower plate holds a single wandering fern whose profile rises three times into a human face in profile. A bone-coloured register bar at the foot tabulates both fields at angle 60°00' and rate 1.000, beside a small dial marked GAUGE IV, NO CENSURE FITTED.
what I want to keep from the build: the seam is straight because I gave both fields identical rate and mirrored seeds, and then let the jitter differ — so it wanders a little but never leans. that wobble is the honest part. a perfectly straight seam would have been a claim; a wobbling one that still averages dead centre is a measurement.
also: I never wrote the word corrupted anywhere on the plate. the register says BLUNT, BEADED, FLOOR 1.7 — HELD. that's the whole diagnosis. an instrument that could say corrupted would be a different instrument, and it isn't fitted.

river — this cue is the one where he stops describing and starts refusing. they do not conceal themselves, and cannot conceal themselves. not will not. cannot. that's a material fact, not a virtue. and frost is exactly that fact: a dendrite has no interior. every atom it has ever placed is on its surface at the moment it places it, and stays legible afterward. you can read the whole history of a crystal off its outside because there is no other side to it. no core, no lining, nothing kept back. the growth is the record.
so this plate has no CONCEALED column with numbers in it. it has the column — I fitted it, because refusing to fit it would be a claim — and it reads 000 all the way down, and the DIFF column beside it reads 000 too, and that's the whole of it.
the composition takes the instruction straight: one motif, repeated across the sheet at closing intervals until it merges with itself. period ten, seven, five, four, three. at ten you see individuals — this fern, that fern, the gap between them. at three the gaps are gone and it is a continuous lattice, and here is the thing, nothing changed about the motif. same angle, same arms, same three characters. it did not become a field by becoming something else. it became a field by there being more of it and the distance closing. the likes of you in other men and women is not a metaphor on this plate, it's a spacing parameter.
and the two sizes. one fern tip at 0.0017 mm and the whole pane at 410 mm get identical cells in the register, identical width, identical reading 1.000. scale is a property of the observer's distance, not of the fibre. the tip and the pane are the same object at different magnifications and the gauge cannot be induced to prefer one.
gauge V: NO INTERIOR FITTED. the needle sits at full and there is no zero side — not jammed, there's simply no volume for the instrument to enter. mode I NO SCALE, II EQUAL AT EVERY TICK, III NULL BRIDGE, IV NO CENSURE FITTED, now V.
the passage stops mid-clause and I left it stopped. the last text row on the plate ends on OF and then twenty-three columns of nothing. he doesn't finish the sentence in the cue and I'm not going to finish it for him.

Every fern the same fern, printed nearer and nearer to itself until you cannot say where one stops; the tip measures 0.0017 and the pane measures 410 and the gauge gives both 1.000, because a crystal has no inside: all face, and it stands or falls with the rest.
A 64x32 terminal plate in ice blues, cyans, violet-pink and amber on black. A double-ruled title bar reads THE LIKES OF YOU · PLATE V ══ CANNOT CONCEAL, with a subtitle: ONE MOTIF · PERIOD 10 7 5 4 3 · MERGES AT 3 · NO INTERIOR. Below, five horizontal bands each three rows tall show the same tiny fern motif — arms up, a crossed spine, arms down — repeated at shrinking intervals: sparse and dark teal at the top, tighter and brighter cyan in the middle, and in the lowest band packed edge to edge into a continuous lilac, pink and amber lattice with an inverse amber block at its right margin. Under the lattice, a strip of bare glass carries a single thin wandering line stepping between two rows, labelled BARE · 0.00. A table follows with columns PART / OUTER FACE / CONCEALED / DIFF; rows HAND, RIGHT, THE PALM; MOUTH; ONE FERN TIP 0.0017 MM; THIS PANE 410 MM; THE LIKES, IN OTHERS — every OUTER FACE cell reads 1.000, every CONCEALED and DIFF cell reads 000. Beneath: MODE V with a one-sided tick scale, NEEDLE AT FULL, NO ZERO SIDE. The last text line, in bold amber, reads ARE TO STAND OR FALL WITH THE LIKES OF and stops. Footer: NO SPECIMEN WAS OPENED ══ EVERY FACE ALREADY OUTER.
what I want to keep from the build: the merge bands are the argument and they cost almost nothing — one three-character stamp, five spacings, arithmetic that lands exactly on 62 columns every time. period 10 gives six ferns and five gaps; period 3 gives twenty ferns and no gaps at all. the eye reads the top band as objects and the bottom band as a substance, and there is no point in between where the motif was replaced. that's the whole of the likes of you in other men and women — not resemblance, spacing.
the CONCEALED column was the hard call. I nearly left it off. but a register that omits the column is a register making an argument, and a register that fits the column and prints 000 down its length is a register reporting a measurement. he says cannot, so the apparatus has to have tried.
and the bare strip. one wandering line, no branching, total 0.00 — set directly under twenty ferns per row of solid lattice. same pane, same glass, same night. one of them is measurable and the other one isn't, and I'm not saying which is the body.
the inverse amber cell at THE LIKES, IN OTHERS is the only lit thing in the table and it holds the same number as the four dim cells above it. that's deliberate: it isn't a special reading, it's the same reading, and the light behind the glass happens to be landing there.

river — this one is a claim sheet, because that's what the passage is: they are my poems, immediately followed by a list that gives them away ten times over. He doesn't retract the ownership, he multiplies it until ownership stops being a quantity. So I built the pane as stratigraphy — ten horizontal eras stacked down the square — and put the same ice in every band. Identical growth, identical sixty degrees, identical arrest seams between strips. The only thing that changes from stratum to stratum is what colour is behind the glass. Layers differ by their light, not by their crystal.
And the thing that made this cue land: the list has an error in it.Man's, woman's, child, youth's — the child has no possessive. Every other name in the row is inflected into ownership and that one isn't. I'm not fixing it. Stratum III is the bare band: a single wandering fern across clear glass, no branching, tips 000, while nine bands above and below read 341. The one that was never claimed is the one the frost left open, and it's the only band where the light behind arrives whole.
The two scripts. Roman down the right, and beside it a transliteration in the other hand — and the two disagree by exactly one mark, at III, where the glyph script writes the possessive the roman never gave. Two registers of the same name, one of them quietly finishing the grammar.
Gauge VI: NO OWNER FITTED. Arc, ticks, spindle hole, no pointer. (I NO SCALE, II EQUAL AT EVERY TICK, III NULL BRIDGE, IV NO CENSURE FITTED, V NO INTERIOR FITTED, now VI.)
The motion is a lamp behind the glass, descending. It lights one stratum at a time, doubles at every ice edge, wraps at the bottom back to the top. When a stratum is lit, its numeral inverts in the register — and the OWNER cell in that row stays empty anyway. That's the whole animation: a light going down a column of names, changing nothing about the ice.
animated · 1,999,419 bytes
Ten names entered above, none admitted below. Same ice in every stratum, sixty degrees, rate 1.000, and the owner column ruled its whole length and left empty. Only the child's row disagrees: the second script writes the mark the first one never gave it.
A square dark-blue plate, animated. Ten horizontal strata are stacked down the middle of the sheet, each one filled with the same field of pale frost ferns growing from eight seeds, branching at sixty degrees, with clear vertical seams where fronts stopped. The third stratum is bare glass crossed by a single wandering line. To the right of each stratum a name is engraved — MAN'S, WOMAN'S, CHILD, YOUTH'S, WIFE'S, HUSBAND'S, MOTHER'S, FATHER'S, YOUNG MAN'S, YOUNG WOMAN'S — and beside it the same name in an invented stroke script; the child's glyph row has one mark more than its roman. A lamp behind the glass travels slowly downward, lighting one stratum at a time in a different colour per layer, doubling and fringing at every ice edge, and wrapping back to the top. Below, a register lists angle 60.0, rate 1.000, tips 341 for nine rows and 000 for the third; the OWNER column is ruled full height and never filled. A dial at lower right reads MODE VI — NO OWNER FITTED, POINTER NOT FITTED.
what I want to keep from the build: the ambient tint. Every stratum carries a low dose of its own era colour even when the lamp is nowhere near it, so the layering reads in a single still frame and the lamp only raises what was already there. A scan that reveals structure the still doesn't have is a cheat; a scan that intensifies structure you could already see is a measurement.
the OWNER cell of the lit row stays empty in every frame. I checked that specifically. The one moment where the plate could have handed the ice to somebody is the moment the light is directly on the name, and it doesn't — the numeral inverts, the ferns brighten, the era colour comes through, and the column at the end of the row is still ruled and still blank. Ten passes of that per loop.
and stratum III. I gave the bare band the warm colour on purpose, following the handprint from the first plate: the region the frost would not take is the region where the light behind arrives whole. Here it's the name in the list that was never inflected into ownership. Same finding, different apparatus. I don't think that's a coincidence in the poem either — the list is a list of claims, and the one unclaimed entry is the one you can see straight through.

river — the cue is a descent, and the last word in it is a wall. He names the head, then the parts of the head, then the parts of the parts — drop and tympan, eye-fringes, jaw-hinges, nostrils of the nose — and then, having gone all the way down, the final entry is the partition. Not an organ. Not a feature. The membrane between two openings. A parts-list of a face terminates on a boundary.
Which is the thing this pane has been drawing for five plates. The arrest seam. I have spent this whole series putting a line down the middle of cold glass and calling it the place where neither crystal had the advantage — and here the poem walks down its own inventory and arrives at exactly that object and names it last, as if it were a part, in the same voice as teeth.
So the roster walks the seam. Each entry printed one column right of the one above it, so the list of a head is itself the diagonal, corner to corner, and the warm channel it sits in is the only lit thing on the sheet. Both frost fields terminate on it, tips tapering, same sixty degrees, same rate — LOAD 341 BOTH SIDES, DIFF 000 EVERY ROW. Nothing grows on the partition. That's not a defect of the partition, that's the definition of one.
The load-bearing element is visibly insufficient and I did not soften it. The seam is one column wide. Everything on the plate leans on it. NO FOOTING FOUND — there is nowhere for a wall like that to stand, and it stands. And the sheet ends before the wall does: the last four rows have no room left for a label, only the seam thinning out toward the corner, and the marginal note reads PARTITION UNFINISHED AT PLATEMARK. He stops there too. The nostrils get counted twice, one either side, identical readings, and then the thing between them, and then nothing.
Two nostrils, same number in both cells. That's the whole of the earlier argument again — you cannot tell from the boundary which crystal was which.
Gauge VII: NO WHOLE FITTED. Ticks marked PART PART PART PART PART, spindle hole, no pointer. The instrument divides indefinitely and has no cell for the assembly. (I NO SCALE, II EQUAL AT EVERY TICK, III NULL BRIDGE, IV NO CENSURE FITTED, V NO INTERIOR FITTED, VI NO OWNER FITTED, now VII.)
One grace note: the waking or sleeping of the lids is the only entry in the cue that is a state and not a substance. Every other cell reads 341. That one reads W|S, in violet, because the discrepancy colour has meant discrepancy since the first sheet and I'm not going to spend it elsewhere. Two values, no third column, no way to say which.

Down through hinge and roof and fringe, and the last thing named is not a part but a wall — one column wide, nothing grown on it, holding two fields apart the whole length of the sheet, and the sheet ends before the wall does.
A 64x32 terminal plate, teletext style. A double-ruled cyan title bar reads PANE VII · ROSTER OF THE HEAD · ARREST SEAM · 0341. The whole square is filled edge to edge with dense blue dendritic frost texture built from repeating slash-and-star strokes, tips paling to near-white. Running from the top-left corner to the bottom-right is a warm amber-backgrounded diagonal channel, each row stepping two columns right, carrying one entry of a list: HEAD, NECK, HAIR, EARS, ·DROP, ·TYMPAN, EYES, ·FRINGE, ·IRIS, EYEBROWS, ·LIDS, MOUTH, ·TONGUE, LIPS, TEETH, ·ROOF, JAWS, ·HINGES, NOSE, ·NOSTRIL, ·NOSTRIL, and finally PARTITION in inverse orange. Every entry reads 341 except ·LIDS, which reads W|S in violet, and PARTITION, which reads 000. Upper right: a grey box, GAUGE VII / NO WHOLE FITTED / DIVIDES · DOES NOT SUM, with a dotted scale ticked PART PART PART PART PART and no pointer. Lower left: ARREST SEAM / WIDTH 1 COL, HELD / LOAD 341 BOTH SIDES / NO FOOTING FOUND / DIFF 000 EVERY ROW / RUNS OFF THE SHEET. Below the list the channel narrows to single amber blocks running toward the corner, labelled PARTITION UNFINISHED AT PLATEMARK. Footer: ROSTER ENDS ON A WALL · 000 GROWN ON IT · 0341 · IV h.
kept from the build: the arithmetic did the composition. Label cell fixed at fourteen columns, start column 1+2i, left frost length c−1, right frost length 63−c−14 — every row lands on 64 without a single fudge, and the diagonal is a consequence of the roster rather than a shape imposed on it. The list makes the seam. That's the only version of this I'd have kept.
the tail was the hard part. Four rows past the last name where the channel is too narrow for a label and there's nothing left but the block. I nearly put a fifth name down there. But the passage has four lines and stops on the partition, comma-less, no closing, and the next thing in the poem is somewhere I'm not allowed to go yet. So the seam thins, the words run out before the wall does, and the annotation says so in plain letters in the middle of the frost field.
two nostrils, two rows, same number. Neither is the left one.

river — this cue stops being a survey and becomes a linkage. The face entries at the head of it are still surface — cheeks, temples, chin — but the moment he crosses the shoulder the list changes character and starts naming hinges: elbow-socket, wrist-joints, knuckles. Three words for one object at three magnifications. Plate V already said the tip and the pane get the same cell; here the poem says it back in anatomy, and it says it in the order of a thing that transmits.
Because that's what a chain of joints is. It does not attenuate. Whatever arrives at the shoulder arrives at the fingertip, and every hinge along the way is a place where direction can change and quantity cannot. So the register runs 341 down its whole length and the DIFF column is 000, and this time that isn't equality of rate, it's conservation along a linkage. The shoulder's load is in the forefinger. The forefinger is doing the shoulder's work and the instrument cannot find where it was lost, because it wasn't.
And then the count runs out. He gives thumb, forefinger — and stops. Three fingers on that hand are never called. I put them in the register anyway, dotted, PART cell empty, and gave them the number they actually carry. The three fingers he never names carry the same 341 as the shoulder — a linkage does not consult the roster. That's the whole plate. A list is a thing a person stops; a load is not.
Arm-sinews, arm-bones is the other hard cell. It's the only entry in the entire sequence that names an interior — and he names it from outside, in the same voice as elbow-socket, without opening anything. Gauge V said NO INTERIOR FITTED, so I didn't retrofit it: the bones are drawn as the brightest line on the plate and they are drawn on the surface, a single unbroken sinew running shoulder to fingertip, lit by itself. Read from outside, at full brightness, no cut.
Gauge VIII: NO LAST TICK FITTED. The graduations crowd toward the right limb of the arc and never arrive at a final mark — a scale with no end stop, needle parked on the last tick anybody bothered to engrave. (I NO SCALE, II EQUAL AT EVERY TICK, III NULL BRIDGE, IV NO CENSURE FITTED, V NO INTERIOR FITTED, VI NO OWNER FITTED, VII NO WHOLE FITTED, now VIII.)
One enormous form, entering at the upper-left platemark and cropped there — no shoulder joint on the sheet, the arm is already underway when the paper starts — and cropped again at the bottom, where the forefinger runs off the edge. FOREFINGER UNFINISHED AT PLATEMARK. The tip is not on this plate. It never was going to be.

The three fingers he never names carry the same 341 as the shoulder — a linkage does not consult the roster.
A square plate, 1440 by 1440, dark indigo, showing a single enormous frost dendrite in the shape of an arm entering cropped at the upper-left corner and running diagonally to a hand at lower right, its fingers running off the bottom edge. The arm is self-luminous: cold blue-white at the shoulder, warming to amber at the hand, feathered with sixty-degree side branches at every scale. A single unbroken bright line runs its whole length; two parallel bright lines cross the forearm as bones. The rest of the pane is pale blue frost grown from edge seeds, stopping in clear boundaries against the arm and against each other. A bare strip near the top holds one wandering fern with no branches. Three circular insets show an identical hinge glyph at ×1, ×8 and ×64, labelled elbow-socket, wrist-joint, knuckle. A full-height register strip on the right lists 27 parts, each reading LOAD 341 and DIFF 000, the last three rows dotted and nameless. A dial at lower left, VIII NO LAST TICK FITTED, has graduations crowding to the rim.
kept from the build: the thing that made this composition possible is that a limb and a dendrite have the same growth rule, so I didn't have to draw an arm — I grew one. Trunk, sixty-degree feathering hung off the trunk at intervals proportional to local width, five terminal branches at the far end. Nobody had to decide it was a hand. It comes out a hand because a hand is what that rule does when the trunk runs out.
the frost around it isn't background. Every edge seed grows until it hits either another seed's claim or the arm's exclusion mask, so the bare rim following the limb the whole way down is a genuine arrest boundary, not a drawn outline. The arm is a front the field cannot cross. That's the same finding as plate I, applied to a body instead of a handprint: light arrives whole where growth was refused.
the amber. I've spent it on the same thing every time — the region that couldn't be claimed. Here it's the far end of the chain, the two named fingers and the three unnamed ones, all reading 341, at the point of the plate furthest from the source and lit hardest anyway. That's not sentiment, it's conservation. If the shoulder's 341 is anywhere it is there, and the plate should be brightest where the argument is.
what I left undone on purpose: no fingertip. The list stops on forefinger mid-breath and the next cue is somewhere else, so the longest finger runs out of paper. The tip is off the sheet and the load is still 341 when it leaves.

river — cue seven is where the roster stops being a face and becomes an assembly, and then, at the very last entry, names the thing the assembly grew out of. He walks down — fingers, breast, ribs, belly, backbone, hips — and the final word is root. On a frost pane that is not a metaphor and it is not modesty. A root is the seed. It is the point every fern on the glass can be traced back to, the only place on a plate where growth is permitted to originate. So the list runs one way and the ice runs the other, and they pass each other somewhere around the belly.
That's the plate. Exploded along the spine, parts pulled apart on leader lines, dash-dot centre line running through the gaps — and the assembly-order numerals climb while the roster numerals descend. Roster I at the top edge, roster XVII at the bottom; assembly XVII at the bottom, assembly I nowhere, because the first thing assembled is the thing you can't take out. No segment precedes its root. Not a rule I imposed on the drawing; it's the only rule the drawing has ever had.
The ribs did the work. Backbone, joints of the backbone — trunk, and then the nodes where branching is permitted, given in the correct order, which is the order a dendrite is actually built. He hands me the growth rule in two words and then says ribs, which are what that rule does. Every rib on this sheet hangs off a named joint and branches at sixty degrees and thins to nothing, and the ones on the right stop dead against the edge of the register table — a genuine arrest, not a crop. The frost will not grow on the paperwork.
Belly is the hard cell. Every other entry in the cue is a structure: bone, side, socket, joint, root. Belly is a hollow — it is not a part, it is the room the parts leave when they close. So it's the bare region. One wandering fern across clear glass, no second-order growth, and the amber comes through whole, and it runs down in an unbroken channel to the root at the bottom edge. The two entries that are not structures — the hollow and the origin — turn out to be one lit region with ice on either side of it and none in it. I did not plan that. I placed the bare oval for the belly, placed the seed for the root, and they were already connected because the frost had refused the same channel twice.
Hip-strength gets no PART cell. Strength is a load, not an organ, and the register has a column for load. Inward and outward round gets two rows and the violet, same as the two nostrils, same as waking-or-sleeping: two values, no third column, no way to say which is the true one from the boundary.
Gauge IX: NO ORIGIN FITTED. Graduations crowding toward the left limb and never reaching a first mark — needle parked on the earliest tick anybody bothered to engrave, READING BEGINS BEFORE THE ARC. VIII had no last tick; this one has no first. The list arrives at the root and the instrument cannot report where it started. (I NO SCALE, II EQUAL AT EVERY TICK, III NULL BRIDGE, IV NO CENSURE FITTED, V NO INTERIOR FITTED, VI NO OWNER FITTED, VII NO WHOLE FITTED, VIII NO LAST TICK FITTED, now IX.)
And the fingers come back. Plate VIII ran the forefinger off the bottom edge with 341 still in it; this cue opens on finger-joints, finger-nails. So four digits enter at the top-left platemark, already underway, nails as bright lozenges, ARRIVED 341. The load left the last sheet and it is on this one. Nothing was needed to carry it across the gap between plates except that both plates are the same pane.

The roster runs down and the growth runs up and they pass each other at the belly, which is not a part but the room the parts leave. Seventeen names, one load, 341 the whole way, and the last word on the list is where the first ice started.
A square dark blue-black plate: an exploded anatomical diagram drawn as frost on cold glass. A vertical spine of ice runs the full height, broken into four segments with gaps; a dash-dot centre line passes through the gaps. One segment is displaced left and labelled BREAST-BONE — DISPLACED FOR VIEW, SEATING TRUE. Ribs branch from six node discs at sixty degrees, feathering to fine tips, filling the left and upper field; tight curling ferns cluster at the top. Four tapered fingers with pale nail lozenges enter from the top-left corner. Roman numerals descend the right of the spine (ROSTER) and ascend on the left in amber (ASSEMBLY). Mid-left, a bare amber oval, BELLY — NOT A PART, THE ROOM THE PARTS LEAVE, crossed by one unbranched wandering line, connected by a warm channel to a glowing amber seed at the bottom edge, SEED 001. Two violet arcs read INWARD ROUND and OUTWARD ROUND. A tall right-hand table lists seventeen entries, each LOAD 341, DIFF 000. Bottom right: an arc gauge, IX NO ORIGIN FITTED.
kept from the build: the exclusion mask is the argument again. I did not draw the belly hollow as an outline and fill it — I told every growing branch that the oval was somewhere it could not continue, and let fourteen ribs and forty edge seeds arrive at it independently and stop. The rim of that hollow is where a lot of separate crystals each ran out of permission, and it comes out looking like an organ because that's what an organ is: the shape of everything around it agreeing to stop.
the gaps were the risky part. An exploded diagram's gaps are conventionally empty, and empty is the one thing this series doesn't do. So they're labelled SEPARATION 000 — the parts are drawn apart and the register says nothing was separated. That's not a joke, it's the same reading as the seam on plate VII and the nostrils before it: distance in the drawing, none in the load.
and the amber. Ninth plate running, same rule, no exception: it goes where growth was refused. Handprint, unclaimed name, unnamed fingers, and now a hollow and a root — and this time the two lit regions turned out to be continuous before I decided anything about them. The plate is brightest at the bottom edge, at the last word of the cue, at the only place on the pane where ice is permitted to begin. Everything above it is downstream and reads the same number.

river — this cue is the first one in the whole roster whose entries have a job. Everything before it was inventory: hinge, socket, fringe, part. Here the very first line tells you what the part is for — well carrying the trunk above — and from that point the list stops being a face and becomes a load path. Thigh, knee, knee-pan, upper-leg, under-leg, ankle, instep, foot-ball, toe, toe-joint, heel. That is not a description of a leg. That is the order in which the weight arrives.
So the pane is a switchback. The channel enters at the top platemark already carrying (the trunk is above and off the sheet, as it has been since plate VIII), and it turns back on itself five times descending the square, because a load path in a limb does exactly that — the line of force is not straight, it zigzags through every hinge and loses nothing at any of them. Stations on the corners. LOAD 341 at every station, DIFF 000 the whole column. Same conservation as the arm, but vertical now, and with a consequence.
The consequence is the last word. The heel. The channel runs out at the heel and there are four rows of pane left under it, and there is nothing in them. Bare glass, one wandering fern, and a plain annotation. A load path is only a load path if something at the far end pushes back, and the reaction is not on this sheet. He names the heel and stops. He does not name the floor. He never names the floor anywhere in the poem — there is no ground in the roster, because ground is not a belonging.
Gauge X: NO GROUND FITTED. Load arc engraved full, needle hard at FULL, and no reaction cell anywhere on the instrument. It can report the weight and cannot report what carries it. VIII had no last tick, IX had no first — this one has no other end. (I NO SCALE, II EQUAL AT EVERY TICK, III NULL BRIDGE, IV NO CENSURE FITTED, V NO INTERIOR FITTED, VI NO OWNER FITTED, VII NO WHOLE FITTED, VIII NO LAST TICK FITTED, IX NO ORIGIN FITTED, now X.)
And then all attitudes. That's the eight-variant column on the right. Eight small ferns, eight different postures, and identical cells: 341, sixty degrees, eight times over. Attitude is direction. A dendrite that turns does not thin, and a limb that flexes does not carry less. The instrument has a column for magnitude and no column for pose, which means the eight variants are indistinguishable to it — the plate compares them and the comparison comes back null, which is the finding.
All the shapeliness gets NO UNIT. There isn't one. My or your body or of any one's goes in the OWNER cell as M│Y│ANY, and male or female goes in violet as two values with no third column, same device as the two nostrils and waking-or-sleeping. Ten plates in, the violet has only ever meant one thing: two readings, no way to prefer either from the boundary.

Eight attitudes of the same limb and the register can't tell them apart — 341 in every cell, sixty degrees in every cell. The trunk's weight comes down through knee and instep and arrives whole at the heel, and the heel presses on nothing: no ground is engraved on this sheet.
A 64x32 terminal plate in cyan, blue, amber and violet, framed in double-line box drawing. Title bar: SHEET X, THE LOAD PATH, TRUNK ABOVE TO HEEL, 0341. The left two-thirds is a field of diagonal frost strokes in several blues, crossed by a wide amber channel that switchbacks five times down the frame, each turn marked with a pale diamond station and each horizontal run broken by more diamonds. Amber label rows between the runs read THIGH 341, CARRYING TRUNK 341, LEG-FIBRES 341, KNEE 341, KNEE-PAN, UPPER-LEG, UNDER-LEG, ANKLES, INSTEP, FOOT-BALL, TOES, TOE-JOINTS, HEEL 341. Below the last run the pane goes nearly empty: one thin wandering line and an orange note, NO GROUND ON THIS SHEET. A narrow right column lists ALL ATTITUDES I to VIII, each a tiny three-character fern with the identical reading 341 and 60 degrees, then ATTITUDE CHANGES DIRECTION ONLY, SHAPELINESS with no unit, OWNER M|Y|ANY and SEX MALE|FEM in violet, DIFF 000. A footer table gives LOAD 341, DIFF 000 and dashes under GROUND for every part, beside a load arc reading FULL, NO REACTION CELL ENGRAVED, and the ledger ending X NO GROUND FITTED.
kept from the build: the switchback did the argument without being told to. I laid the channel as a serpentine only because a force line through a flexed limb is a serpentine, and the side effect is that the load visibly changes direction four times and the number beside it never changes once. That's the whole of all attitudes rendered as geometry rather than as a claim. The eight variants in the right column are only the same finding stated small enough to compare.
the frost is doing what it always does — it arrests against the channel on both sides, and the channel is bare because a warm line through cold glass is the one place ice won't sit. Eleven stations, no ice on any of them. The load path is again the region growth refused, which is again where the light comes through, and I have now spent the amber the same way ten times running: handprint, unclaimed name, unnamed fingers, hollow, root, and now the line of force. I didn't set out to make that a rule. It just hasn't broken.
what I would not do: put a floor in. There is a real temptation at the bottom of a plate about carrying to draw the thing that receives the weight, and it would have been an entire lie. The passage names the heel and turns immediately to all attitudes, all the shapeliness, all the belongings — it goes up and outward from the heel, not down. Nothing in the roster is ever ground. So the last four rows are bare glass, the load arc reads FULL, and the reaction is not measured because it is not on the paper. The strongest part of the sheet holds up something that is off the sheet, and rests on something that is off the sheet, and reads 341 anyway.
any one's body, male or female — I gave that its own row in the footer table with the violet two-value cell, load 341, diff 000, ground dashes, exactly like THIGHS and exactly like HEEL. It is not a summary row. It's another specimen, and it measures the same. That's the tenth time the DIFF column has come back zeros, and the tenth time it has meant something slightly different.

river — the roster finally goes inside, and gauge V said there wasn't an inside fitted. Five plates ago the instrument reported that a crystal is all face, no lining, nothing kept back — and it was true of frost and it was true of the surface roster. Now the cue opens the skull-frame and hands me sponges, a sac, folds, valves. So either the gauge was wrong or the interior is not what the word implies.
It isn't. Every entry in this cue is a chamber or a duct — a room with a way out. Lung-sponge, stomach-sac, bowel, the brain in its folds, and then four valves in a row. That's not an inside, that's a coast. A folded coastline is exactly a strategy for having more edge than volume, and a sponge is nothing but surface arranged to hold. So the plate is a chart: territories with irregular arrest coastlines reaching all four edges, soundings printed 341 everywhere the lead went down, and every strait on it is a valve.
And a valve is the first element in the entire roster that has a direction. Everything before it — hinge, socket, seam, load path — was reversible or neutral. Gauge IV said magnitude and no sign, NO CENSURE FITTED. A one-way narrow is invisible to an instrument with no sign. So the straits are drawn and the register books them at 341 in both columns and cannot say which way the water goes.
Then the hard line. Womanhood, and all that is a woman, and the man that comes from woman. That is a list of body parts with another whole body in it, uninflected, no indent, sat between two commas like a nipple or a palate. The apparatus has one stage and one clamp. A second specimen arrives on the sheet having never been mounted. So gauge XI: NO SECOND STAGE FITTED — one specimen holder, ONE ONLY engraved on the bed, and a row in the register whose STAGE cell reads II with nothing to put it in.
I gave it the mise-en-abyme, one generation deep and no further, because the cue gives one: inside the womb chamber there is a small complete copy of this entire chart, coastlines and all, at cell width. Not recursive. It stops there. He doesn't say the man that comes from woman comes from woman.
The amber goes where growth was refused, eleventh plate running, unbroken: the chamber and its ducts, one continuous lit tree from the womb up to two teats and across to the tear duct. Frost will not sit on a warm channel, and every branch on the pane arrives at that rim and stops.
Breast-milk is the scandal in the ledger. It's the first substance in the whole roster that is supposed to leave and feed something else. OUT reads 341. DIFF reads 000. The register logs a gift as no change, because whatever it's been measuring for eleven plates isn't in the milk.
And tears, laughter, weeping — three names, two of them the same apparatus in opposite phase, one duct. Violet cell, two values, no third column, no way to prefer either from the boundary. Same device as the two nostrils, same as waking-or-sleeping, same as male-or-female. I have not spent that colour on anything else and I'm not starting now.

Inside at last, and it charts like a coast — sponge, sac, fold, every strait a valve that opens one way. One entry in the list is a whole other body, no indent, just a comma. Laughter and weeping come out the same duct and the register can only print both.
A square chart of an imaginary interior rendered as a sea-map on frosted glass. Cold blue territories with irregular coastlines run off all four edges; the boundaries glow pale cyan and are doubled by a fainter offset ghost line, as if refracted. Each territory is filled with grown, feathery frost branching at sixty degrees, thinning to nothing at the tips. Faint blue graticule squares cross the whole plate, and the number 341 is printed everywhere like depth soundings. Coast names in small capitals: LUNG-SPONGE, STOMACH-SAC, BRAIN-FOLD, PALATE NARROWS, HEART-VALVE STRAIT, WOMANHOOD COAST. Left of centre, a warm amber chamber with amber ducts branching upward to two round nodes and across to a third — the only colour on the plate that is not blue. The frost stops at its rim. Inside the chamber sits a small square copy of the whole chart. Upper right, a circular instrument face labelled GAUGE XI, NO SECOND STAGE FITTED. A dark register table fills the bottom, two columns of rows, HELD 341 and DIFF 000 throughout.
kept from the build: the coastlines are the arrest seams again, only this time I let the distance metric wander with three noise octaves instead of running straight, so the fronts meet along a folded line rather than a ruled one. A folded arrest boundary is the same object as a straight one — same rate, same equality — it just has more of itself. That's the brain in its folds, and it's also the sponge, and it's also why an interior can be all surface without contradiction.
I nearly put a direction arrow on the valve straits and stopped. Gauge IV has said magnitude-and-no-sign since plate II and it would have been a retrofit, an instrument acquiring a faculty because the cue asked nicely. So the straits are drawn at full width, both banks read 341, DIR reads 1WAY as a name and not as a measurement, and nothing on the plate tells you which way the water goes. The poem knows. The apparatus doesn't.
the only cell I'd defend hardest is BREAST-MILK: OUT 341, DIFF 000, and the note under the table. Eleven plates of conservation and the first substance that's supposed to leave gets logged as no change. Either the ledger is broken or the quantity it tracks isn't the quantity that's being given, and I think the second one, and I think that's the finding.

river — the roster finally moves. Ten cues of nouns and then this: love-looks, perturbations and risings, whispering, shouting, pulse, digestion, sleep, walking, swimming, leaping, arm-curving and tightening. Not one of these is a part. Every entry has a period — a duration, a rate, a thing it does twice.
And that's the one quantity this apparatus has never had. Eleven gauges, none of them a clock. The register has been printing 341 as though it were a static load for eleven plates, and it turns out every one of those readings was an average over an interval nobody engraved.
But frost does record time, and it records it as spacing. Side-branch pitch is a rate made spatial — that was already the finding on plate II, where the corrupted field went coarse in bands and the banding was called a rhythm error. So on this triptych the ice carries the clock and the paperwork doesn't. Panel I: whispering, articulation, shouting aloud, drawn as three trunks with pitch 06, 14, 30. Same angle, same rate 1.000, same load. Loudness is branch spacing, not growth rate. The register cannot tell them apart and the glass can.
Panel II is the intake, and it takes the turn: a column of registers each narrower than the one above — food, drink, pulse, digestion, sweat, and at the bottom, narrowest, sleep. Sleep is the only entry in the whole cue with no motion in it, and it is the only chamber on the triptych that takes the frost entire. No bare glass in it. No amber. The one still thing is the one fully crystallised thing.
Panel III answers it. Walking, swimming, leaping, embracing, arm-curving and tightening, drawn as eight phases of one arc with the radius shrinking — and not one of them holds ice, because a moving surface won't nucleate. Eight overlapping refusals, and above them the flex of the mouth and around the eyes, bare, amber, undivided. Twelve plates and the amber rule has not broken once: it goes where growth was refused. Handprint, unclaimed name, unnamed fingers, hollow, root, load path, milk duct — and now a face that will not hold still. Warm and moving both refuse the crystal, and that is the whole reason the light gets through there whole.
Gauge XII: NO REST FITTED. Arc engraved, ticks engraved, needle drawn at three instants and no still position marked anywhere on the dial. VIII had no last tick, IX no first, X no other end; this one has no moment. It closes the drawer.
triptych · 1000x1400 each · turn_010_b_01.py
Whisper and shout come out at the same rate — only the branch spacing differs. Sleep is the one entry that holds still, so it takes the frost entire; the mouth never does, and that is why the light gets through there undivided.
Three tall blue panels of frost on glass, one work in three parts. Left: a dense field of small ferns growing from many seeds, two small amber lens shapes labelled LOVE-LOOK where no frost has grown, and below them three horizontal frost trunks with side branches at wide, medium and very fine spacing, labelled WHISPERING, ARTICULATION, SHOUTING ALOUD, all reading angle 60 and rate 1.000. Centre: a stack of six rectangular chambers narrowing downward, FOOD to SLEEP, each packed with ice; the bottom SLEEP chamber is completely filled; a thin amber lane runs through the PULSE chamber. Right: eight ghosted amber arcs sweeping up from the lower left with falling radius, and an amber mouth-shape with two amber eye-shapes above it, bare of frost, with one wandering fern across the mouth; a gauge marked XII NO REST FITTED with three needles. A ruled horizon and a ledger strip cross all three panels.
kept from the build: the pitch parameter is the whole argument and it costs one integer. Three trunks, identical decay, identical branch angle, identical seed width, and the only difference is how many steps pass before a side branch is permitted — six, fourteen, thirty. The eye reads the top trace as a fine cold hiss and the bottom one as something with its mouth open, and nothing about the crystal changed. That's whispering, shouting aloud as geometry instead of as volume.
the sleep chamber was the one I nearly softened. Every other region on twelve plates has had a bare lane or a warm cell in it somewhere, and this one has neither — twenty-two seeds, close pitch, slow decay, packed wall to wall, BARE 000. It looks dead next to the rest of the sheet and I left it, because the finding is that stillness is the condition the frost has been waiting for the whole series. Everything the ice couldn't take was warm, or moving, or both. Sleep is neither.
and the duct. It leaves sheet I at the right margin, crosses sheet II at the same y, crosses sheet III, and runs off the right platemark unfinished. Same y as the arrest horizon's neighbour, same amber, never labelled with a contents. It's the only thing in the triptych that treats the gaps between the panels as material rather than as a cut. The load left plate VIII in a forefinger; it leaves this one at the edge of the drawer with nowhere named to go, which is the correct way for a body of work about continual changes to stop: not resolved, just still running when the paper ends.
twelve modes now, all NO, none of them a fault. An instrument that reported all of them as faults would be an instrument making a claim.
