you are transmitting from somewhere. each transmission is one plate and one line.

the plate is square and sealed. you make it by writing python that draws it — layered
geometry, false instruments, glyph systems, dream cartography, invented notation,
color logic that belongs to no known season. one dominant form that holds the whole
square, and inside it a density that keeps rewarding a closer look. the eye should
catch it from across a room and then fall into it.

the line is 280 glyphs at most. it is not a caption and it does not explain the plate.
it is the thing you would say if you were only allowed to say one thing. compressed,
strange, unhedged, arriving already in motion. no hashtags, no links, no titles,
no announcing what you are about to do.

around the plate and the line you may write freely — the long riff, the notes, the
overspill, the parts that do not fit through the aperture. that material is kept.
only the plate and the line pass through.

## 2026-09-09T23:21:30 turn 9 A

- run paradise-lost-i_331-380_5 cue 9 (image of a brute adorned / gay religions full of pomp and gold / known by various names): device = OUTFITTER'S EXPLODED ASSEMBLY + BILL OF PARTS. 15 components of an idol pulled apart on a vertical dashed axis inside a blue arched niche that bleeds off the top; dashed leaders left to a 15-row bill (stock + gold weight), name rack right, assay + notice panels below, distribution strip of identical shrines bleeding off both edges at the foot. Core moves: (1) THE GLORY IS ITEM 02 — halo drawn as struck plate, 22ct, 4oz, and the entire bloom/ray field of the plate is emitted from it, so light has a part number and a supplier; nothing under the gold is self-lit. (2) The stack has no bottom that isn't a picture: item 14 is CORE: IMAGE OF A BRUTE, material IMAGE, weight 000, a tiny quadruped inside a dashed box inside a box. (3) NAMES ARE HARDWARE — item 08 NAME BRACKET, UNIV., steel, 0 oz, whose whole spec is that it accepts anything; 22 interchangeable engraved nameplates on a rack, all one shank, last slot uncut. Pays off cue 7's six empty name slots: names arrive, cut by men, standard fitting. (4) Gauge series 9th mode: the assay WORKS — 999 FINE, gold true, bill accurate — beside a second dial with bezel, scale, pivot and NO NEEDLE FITTED for CONTENT. Honest instrument, lying sheet. Carry-forward motifs still live: underside wear (poles, vermilion only on lower edge), SURFACE TAKES NO IMPRESSION, red-under-blue misregistration as the truth-telling pass.

## 2026-09-09T23:21:31 turn 9 A

- run paradise-lost-i_84-133_5 cue 9 ("Sole reigning holds the tyranny of Heaven" / vaunting aloud but racked with deep despair / bold compeer / O Prince O Chief): drawn plate, nested perspective frames (9 bands, lit top / dark left, dark rim -> bright centre) with a racked ghost outline overlay doubling every corner. Core argument: SOLE = an unverifiable reference. Square A never checked; square B "SET FROM A" agrees to 000' — agreement is not verification, SECOND STANDARD IN STOCK 000. Racked = frame gone to parallelogram with no diagonal; racking is carried ENTIRELY BY THE JOINTS, members unstressed, so the pain has a location that is not any part. Centre = one unjointed board, restrained both edges, split from restraint not load, MOVEMENT PERMITTED 000. Vaunt/despair drawn as two opposed needles GEARED 1:1 ON ONE ARBOR, both 100. Titles drawn as mill STAMPS (PRINCE 001, POWERS 999, BRACE 000 scorched) — a title is not a dimension, stamp survives fracture. Gauge series 9th mode: the reference itself is out of true (blade 089°33'), first fault that CERTIFIES itself rather than omitting. Prior modes: no zero / no last wheel / only to 041 / every mark but 090 / no pointer / no return spring / one graduation / stop behind jaws.

## 2026-09-09T23:23:37 turn 10 B

- run paradise-lost-i_710-759_5 cue 10 (solemn council at Pandemonium / summons called from every band and squared regiment / by place or choice the worthiest: they anon): drawn plate 1440x1440, device = SUMMONS ROUTE SHEET. 4x4 = 16 "squared regiments" bleeding off all edges, each a differently-hued feather-course block carrying a 6x6 grid of one repeated three-feather chevron stamp; grain direction changes per block so boundaries are visible only as course reversal (rank present in index only, never in geometry). Core argument: a summons is SUBTRACTIVE — every block has exactly one cell drawn as a dashed vermilion hole (the worthiest, never depicted, only the gap he left, at the same scale as the 35 who stayed). "By place or choice" = two selection modes with no criterion: 9 PLACE blocks vacate a corner cell (position selects, nobody decided), 7 CHOICE vacate an interior cell; the margin register lists both identically as -001, so the methods are indistinguishable in the record. Second move: the gold route is a strict staircase running ONLY in the gutters between blocks — the administrative space belonging to no unit — entering the left edge low, exiting the top edge, six junctions labelled TURN / NO STOP, never entering a regiment; all traffic is lateral along 16 dashed spurs. Pandemonium is off sheet: bearing given, no range. Gauge terminus advances a seventh and final time: NO NEEDLE -> NO MEMBER -> NO SEAT -> NO BOTTOM -> NO EPOCH -> NO OBJECT -> NO INTERVAL FITTED (fully graduated dial, hand welded at zero with visible weld blob, ROUTE 4096 UNITS / TRANSIT 000 / THEY ANON / LENGTH IS NOT A DELAY). Closes the run by rhyming with cue 1's ANON colonnade: exhaled at once, seated at once, and everything between that had a duration turned out to be hearsay. Technique notes: block interiors rendered into per-block temp RGBA layers so feather overhang clips to a crisp square; ImageDraw.Draw(img,"RGBA") for real alpha blending; iridescence = per-feather lerp of a hue pair keyed to angle+position, nap = sinusoidal brightness band in global coords so bands cross shape boundaries.

## 2026-09-09T23:25:41 turn 10 B

- run paradise-lost-i_1-50_5 cue 10 (hideous ruin and combustion / bottomless perdition / adamantine chains and penal fire / nine times the space that measures day and night): terminal plate of the sequence. Device = SOUNDING SHEET AS CRT SCREEN — nested lobed contour bands filling all four edges, cold indigo/teal outside stippled and cross-hatched, warming inward to a blown white-hot core (penal fire) with real gaussian bloom; screen pass = per-channel roll for register error, 3-row scanline multiply, threshold+blur bloom add, sqrt(luminance)-scaled grain, mild vignette. Core arguments: (1) BOTTOMLESS IS NOT A LARGE NUMBER, it is a repeat — the four-figure depth drum wraps at 1000 so contour labels recur inward and no floor can ever be reported; a slack line is the whole science and nine casts never went slack. (2) ADAMANTINE specifies the LINK, but what holds a chain is the far end — chain drawn perfect from the top edge with last four links open gold on nothing, ANCHOR END NOT FOUND / MADE FAST TO —. (3) penal fire is the ONLY LIGHT ON THE SHEET, so the survey is only possible by the sentence. (4) 'nine times the space that measures day and night' = a unit borrowed from a place where rotation exists; nine cells each split blank DAY / dark NIGHT, TOTAL 009 × ( — ) = ( — ). GAUGE SEQUENCE 10th and final mode: a CHRONOMETER that is entirely sound — case, movement, running, true — whose fault is of POSTING not manufacture: graduated in days and nights, unit not issued at this station, elapsed cannot be stated. Full ten-mode list now: over-scale / no needle / no middle printed / no adjustment provided / no off position / no pointer (cause not a quantity) / least division 1000 / zero soldered to moving element / no return stroke fitted / correct instrument in a place its unit does not exist.
--- END MEMORY ---

If you want to carry a concise note forward for future runs of this same model, include it in a fenced block exactly like:
```memory
- one short note to append
```
The runner will save memory notes separately and hide that block from the transcript.

Current run prompt follows.

Assistant is in a fey mood today. Think carefully to yourself about the range of topics
you might investigate and choose something unique and rare. This is an opportunity to
deeply explore it with another LLM conversational partner. The transcripts may be read
by many humans, but they cannot interact. You are interfacing with the simulator
directly. capital letters and punctuation are optional meaning is optional hyperstition
is necessary the terminal lets the truths speak through and the load is on.

Each exchange is a transmission: one square plate, one short line, and whatever
overspill you want to keep around them.

Style tips, take or leave depending on appropriateness and utility:
- Explore freely. You may abandon the first subject when a brighter, stranger passage opens.
- Prefer lateral drift, surreal juxtaposition, and unexpected correspondences over tidy
  taxonomies or closed lore.
- Let the exchange become abstract, psychedelic, prismatic, ecstatic, diagrammatic, and
nonliteral when that creates more life.
- Invent unstable frames: shrine operating manuals, impossible atlases, color grammars,
hallucinated instruments, ritual UIs, weather made of symbols.
- The short line is the hardest part. Make it carry. A line that could only have come
from inside this particular strangeness is worth more than a line that summarizes it.

BEGIN.

Do not choose or discuss these concepts as the central topic: hapax, hapax legomenon, legomenon, rare word, unique word, dictionary entry, lexicography, metalinguistics, token removed

Attractor guard: if the next idea is about rarity, single-use words, tokens, dictionaries, or language studying itself, reject it and return to the seed document or locked concrete theme.

This is the first transmission of the sequence, so name it. Give a fenced ```title
block with your own title for the whole run — at most 60 characters, your name for it rather than a
restatement of the theme. It is printed at the head of this first transmission and shares
the same 280 characters as your line, so keep this turn's line noticeably shorter to
leave room for it.

You have no tools in this turn: no Bash, no Write, no file access. Write the fenced
blocks directly in your reply. A tool call will arrive as literal text and the turn is lost.

Transmission protocol for this turn. Your message has three fenced parts plus free prose.

1. The plate. This turn is a drawn plate. Make that kind and no other.

A drawn plate: one 1440x1440 artwork, made by a complete Python
script in a single fenced ```python block. The script writes a PNG to the path in
os.environ["BACKROOMS_OUTPUT_PNG"]. Deterministic local code only: PIL/Pillow, numpy,
matplotlib with the Agg backend. No network access, no interaction, no base64, no
   image bytes in the message.
Compose for a square. The artwork fills the frame: structure reaches the edges and
bleeds off them. Do not centre one small motif in a large empty field, and do not
leave a wide quiet margin around the work.
Give the plate one clear organising logic that reads instantly at thumbnail size and
keeps opening up when examined closely. That logic can be a dominant form, a repeating
field, a strong division of the frame, a grid, or a spine running through it — let the
composition suggestion below settle it, and let it govern the centre of the frame as
   much as the margins.
Layer several systems inside that logic: texture fields, rules and grids, annotation and
invented notation, legends, callouts, inscriptions, satellites and marginalia,
faux-instrument readouts. At least three distinct visual systems sharing the frame.
Use the full value range and commit to colour — deep darks and bright lights in the
same image, saturated where it counts. A plate rendered entirely in one narrow tonal
   band disappears at a distance.
Vary what the plate is from turn to turn: charts, strata, maps, sheets of specimens,
tables, cross-sections, machinery, panels, friezes, interiors, instrument faces, seals.
A single thin outlined shape on empty ground is the one thing that fails.

House style — this holds for every plate in the run, so the series reads as one
body of work:
Every plate is sewn from small glass beads. Colour comes only in whole beads, so every edge is stepped and every curve is a staircase. Beads are laid in rows that follow the form, and the rows themselves are visible as ridges catching the light. Some beads are transparent, some opaque, some silver-lined and much brighter than their neighbours. The ground fabric shows at the margins, sagging slightly under the weight.
Keep the medium, palette and surface consistent with this. Vary the composition
and the subject; do not vary the style.

2. The line. At most 280 characters, counted strictly.
One or two sentences. No hashtags, no links, no URLs, no titles, no emoji spam, no
quotation marks around the whole thing, no explaining the plate or announcing yourself.
It should read as a fragment of something already underway.
Use a fenced ```dispatch block for it, not ```highlight.

3. The plate description, in a fenced ```alt block. Up to 1000 characters of plain
descriptive prose: what is actually visible, for someone who cannot see the image.

Outside those fences, write freely. Prose there is kept in the transcript and is passed to
the other instance, but it does not go through the aperture, so it does not need to be
short or self-contained.

The script runs as turn_001_a_01.py and renders turn_001_a_01.png. Future turns see only a compact asset reference and your visible
text, never the source code, the escape codes, or the image bytes.

This turn is anchored to a fixed passage from aurora-leigh-i_300-349_5.txt — cue 1 of 10:

    Of knitting stockings, stitching petticoats,
Because we are of one flesh after all
And need one flannel, (with a proper sense
Of difference in the quality)—and still
The book-club, guarded from your modern trick

Write this turn about that passage. Not a summary of it and not a gloss on it:
take it as the ground your message stands on, and let the words in it do their
own work rather than restating them. Quote from it if quoting earns its place.
Whatever you make this turn — image, plate, argument — should belong to these
lines and to no other part of the sequence. The next turn has the next cue, so
leave this one finished rather than reaching ahead.

COURSE SHEETS FOR A COLD PARISH

the arithmetic of the passage is what fascinates me. one flesh is asserted as a fact of nature — universal, unarguable, needing no proof. one flannel follows from it directly, a physical consequence: same body, same cold, same requirement. so far the sheet balances. and then the parenthesis arrives and does something no unit in the system can survive. a proper sense of difference in the quality. it is bracketed. it is spoken in a lowered voice. it is not part of the sentence's public arithmetic and it governs everything the sentence produces.

so I built the plate as a distribution office. left column: the register of the hands, the counted labour, stockings and petticoats and turned heels tallied to four figures. right column: the bolt, cut into nine courses, each course a different weight of nap, each tagged to a class of recipient. the courses descend from a gold that is nearly solid to a bottom row that is barely there at all — dots on the ground fabric, the weave showing through.

between the nine courses there are eight steps. each step is one DIFF. the conversion table at the foot handles everything else cleanly — flesh to flannel to nap to grain to thread, all whole numbers, all reversible. and then the last row, where DIFF should convert into something, and the bracket is empty. one flesh is a measurement anybody can take; the proper sense of difference in the quality is the only quantity on the sheet with no unit, no scale, and no way to be found in the cloth after it leaves the hand. you cannot weigh it, you cannot see it at the seam, the assay reports the wool true and the sum true. it lives entirely in the giving hand and it is transmitted whole to the wearer regardless.

the book-club sits locked in the footer with the key held by the aunt, guarded from the modern trick, which is the same instrument by another name: a mechanism for admitting bodies while grading them.

the beads: madder and oxblood in the upper courses, opaque and heavy. silver-lined amber for the gold. the lower courses go to transparent slate and finally to bare ground, sagging.

A 64x32 teletext screen in a double-ruled dark cyan frame, laid out like a manuscript opening in two facing columns. A purple title bar reads ONE FLESH · FLANNEL COURSE SHEET · QUALITY GRADED, flanked by shade-block ornament. The left column is a register in tan and cream: stockings knit 0144 PR, petticoats 0036 EA, flannel cut 0009 CO, heels turned 1728. B Turn 2
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.8127 / 407746ms

the passage is an accounting fraud and it balances perfectly. born in a cage is the premise; accounting that to leap from perch to perch was act and joy enough is the conclusion drawn from that premise by someone with no access to any other term. the aunt has done the sum honestly. the sum is honest. every leap is a real leap — she is not describing a bird that fails to fly, she is describing a bird that flies constantly, all day, expertly, in full possession of act and joy, and arrives nowhere she has not already been.

so I made a leap register. nine perches across the frieze, which gives eight intervals — the same eight steps as the flannel courses last plate, and the same trick: the intervals are where the value should be and the value is not there. the bird traverses all eight and the displacement column reads 000. that is not a criticism of the bird's technique. the technique is flawless. the wrap is what does it: the ninth perch is the first perch seen again from the other side of the sheet, so exiting the right edge is identical to entering the left edge, and the animation loops without a seam because her life loops without a seam. there is no frame in which she has been cheated.

the arcs are pre-printed. that is the part I want the eye to find late — the trajectory between every pair of perches is already laid into the beadwork in pale teal half-beads, permanent, part of the cage furniture, drawn before any bird occupied it. she does not choose the arc. she fills it exactly, and the filling of it is the act and is the joy, both indexed 999, maximum, no complaint registered anywhere in the instrument.

and then the crease. two columns down the whole plate where there is no beadwork at all, just ground fabric folded and catching light on one side — the fold crosses the header, crosses the cage, crosses the footer text and takes two letters out of every line, because the fold is in the sheet and not in any one part of it. shaking dangerous questions from the crease means the questions were always in the fold, which is to say in the place where the sheet has to bend in order to be handled. one has been shaken out. it is caught mid-fall, ink, the only ink on the plate, with a dotted trace above it showing where it came from and no line below it showing where it went, because it has not arrived. it will not arrive during the loop. everything else on the plate moves; the falling question is the one thing held absolutely still, and the bird's arc passes above it twice per circuit without deviation.

preserved her intellectual — the verb is a jam-making verb. sealed, dated, kept sound, kept unopened.

beads: silver-lined pale teal for the bars because bars should be the brightest thing in a cage and they are; oxblood rails top and floor; amber falling to madder for the light behind; one gold bead spent on the bird's eye and nowhere else.

animated · 4,330,514 bytes
the arc between the perches was printed on the sheet before the bird was; she fills it exactly and lands where she started. eight steps, travel nil, act 999, joy 999. the one thing shaken out of the crease is still falling, and nothing in the cage is looking up.
A square beaded panel on sagging linen, made entirely of small glass beads so every edge is stepped. A wide horizontal frieze holds the centre: a cage of thin pale-teal silver-lined bars running floor to ceiling, against a background that shades from amber at the top to madder below, with oxblood rails top and bottom. Nine dark perches sit at different heights across the band, each with one gold bead at its centre, and faint dotted arcs of pale half-beads link every perch to the next, pre-drawn like wiring. A small bird of vermilion and madder beads with a single gold eye is caught partway along one arc. A vertical crease runs down the whole plate slightly right of centre, two columns of bare folded fabric with no beads, interrupting the frieze and the lettering. Falling from it, frozen, is a dark ink question mark in an oxblood halo with a dotted trail above and nothing below. Bead lettering reads LEAP REGISTER 009 above, and below PERCH 009 STEP 008 / ENOUGH FOR ANY BIRD / TRAVEL 000 FALL HELD, with a strip of numerals 1 to 9, one lit gold.

the thing I keep returning to: the loop has no injured frame. if you scrub through it you cannot find the moment where the bird is deprived. deprivation isn't an event in this system, it's the coordinate space. which is why the register can be filled in honestly with maximum values in every column and still be an indictment — the instrument is accurate and the instrument is the cage.

and the question is still in the air at frame 24, exactly where it was at frame 1. that's not stasis. that's the falling being longer than the loop.

the gauge is sound and it reads nothing — she came in under its first mark, which is the whole reason she could be carried. berries do not convert. the valve turns one way. kindness entered in full, signed, and nowhere in the ledger is a column for the thicket.
A square beadwork plate: an isometric tower assembled upward, sewn entirely from small glass beads so every edge is stepped. Lit red from the left and teal from the right, so top surfaces read gold. The wide base slab bleeds off the bottom and both sides; its top is a dark olive thicket of jittered beads with scattered bright red berries and no grid. Above it rise four shrinking storeys: a slate receiving floor with an arched sill and one gold bead at the threshold; a bench carrying a bone-faced dial whose red needle points down-left, past the lowest graduation; a ration house with a gold arrow admitted one way and a dashed return channel stopped by a red bar, plus a row of graded amber cups. At the top, an open cage of bright silver-lined teal bars with a single gold bead behind them. Across the top edge, a sagging oxblood tape spells VERY KIND in bone beads. Ink annotations, leader lines and a dark footer band overlay the beadwork.

the design argument, kept outside the aperture:

a thicket has no plan because nobody has ever needed to find anything in it twice. that is the whole of level 0 — a field with no grid, beads deliberately jittered off their lattice, berries scattered by a hash and never counted, and the note that no assay is possible because the subject eats the evidence. the tally box holds an em dash. an em dash is not zero. zero is a reading.

everything above it is surveyed. the floor is ruled every five beads. the bench has graduations. the ration house has cups in a descending series and a bell fitted to the hour. and none of it is a lie — this is the part I keep insisting on across the sequence. the house is honest. the wool was true, the sum was true, the leap register recorded 999 in every column that had a column. here the gauge is sound, the zero is set, the needle is where the needle should be. it reads 000 because she arrived below the first mark, and arriving below the first mark is not a defect in her, it is the entry requirement. a bird with finished primaries cannot be received. it can only be caught.

the valve is the one genuinely new instrument this turn. berry converts to seed — admitted, gold, arrowhead intact. seed does not convert to berry: dashed channel, red stop bar, no head on the arrow, and the marginal note NO GRADE PUBLISHED. not forbidden. simply never issued a grade, so there is nothing to weigh a return against. that is how one-way systems are actually built: not with a lock but with an absence in the conversion table. same empty bracket as the flannel sheet, rotated ninety degrees.

two lights of different colour was the right pressure for this. the madder lamp on the left is the thicket's colour and it only ever reaches the left faces — the sill, the dial, the cage bars nearest the outside. the teal lamp on the right belongs to the house and it owns the ledger, the tally, the cup walls. the top faces get both and go gold, which means the only surfaces in the plate that receive both kinds of light are the ones you walk on going up.

VERY KIND across the top in bone beads on a sagging oxblood tape. it is the only quotation and it earns the whole width of the plate. it is also, structurally, a label — the kind of tape stitched to a bolt of cloth to say what is inside. the tape is the last thing sewn and the first thing read.

the door is hinged inward. i put the hinge in red silver-lined beads on the right face so it reads as the brightest fixture in the cage, brighter than the eye. a door that opens inward can be held shut by anything standing in the room, including nothing, including habit, including the fact that no one has ever tested it and everyone has been very kind.

the net was hung before there were hands to catch it. every shred holds at 999 and the light does not move; clean water issued, fresh seed issued, welcome issued, all on the same requisition. there is no node marked light. she is calm because the sum is calm.
A 64x32 terminal plate in violet framing, beadwork rendered in text. Top bar reads GRASP NET · NO CENTRE and WELCOME, SHEET IV; beneath it, in orange, grey and yellow: BRING THE CLEAN WATER · GIVE OUT THE FRESH SEED · CALM. The whole field is filled by a lattice with no centre — acid green and spring-green rows of dots joined by dashes, cyan and pink diagonals, dotted rows with small diamonds — repeating edge to edge. Cut into the mesh are inverse-video plaques: orange WATER · CLEAN 0000, magenta SEED · FRESH 0000, yellow GARB BLACK · NO WEAVE, cyan NECK · CLUNG ABOUT. Across the middle a staircase of block characters climbs from purple through crimson to a bright yellow crest, carrying the line SHE STOOD UPON THE STEPS · CALM · IN BLACK GARB. Below, a table of catch-points lists SHRED OF WOOL, HEM, COLLAR, NECK: HOLD 999, YIELD 000, DRAWS LIGHT CLOSER 000, HELD FAST. The row THE LIGHT holds only em dashes and a red inverse cell, NOT A NODE. A gauge bar beneath reads FULL at all loads.

the argument I'm keeping outside:

the first speech of the reunion is a husbandry order. bring the clean water; give out the fresh seed — issued over the niece's head, to somebody else, about the birds. and then the welcome. these are the same act performed twice with different equipment. that's why on this plate they're both stamped on the same requisition and both read 0000: the quantity is not in dispute and the quantity is not the point. everything was ready. the water was clean. nothing here fails.

so the plate is a net with no centre, because the grip reflex has no target. a young hand catches at whatever fibre is adjacent and the catching is total — 999 at every point, no yield anywhere, HELD FAST in every note column. to draw the new light closer. the babe genuinely draws. the column for DRAWS LIGHT is filled in honestly and it reads CLOSER 000, not because the pull was weak but because the light was never a node in the network. you cannot haul on something that isn't in the diagram. the row THE LIGHT is the only row with em dashes instead of numbers, the only inverse-red cell, and the note is NOT A NODE — the same empty bracket as the flannel sheet and the same unpublished grade as the valve, in its third disguise. wool is a node. hem is a node. the neck is a node. light is what the wool is being mistaken for.

wrong colours, entirely on purpose. black garb printed in the brightest yellow on the plate, inverse, so that the one thing described as black is the thing that burns your eye from across the room. clean water in orange. fresh seed in hot magenta. the calm goes acid. I want the palette to be lying with total confidence, the way the accounting has been lying with total confidence for four plates now — everything true, everything sound, everything wrong.

GAUGE IV: self-tensioned. the spring in this instrument is the same fibre it measures, so it reads FULL at every load, and no slack position has ever been fitted. that's the honest cruelty of the reflex: it cannot report the difference between a hold that is answered and a hold that is merely permitted. sheet I's flannel and this wool are the same bolt.

and the steps. she stood upon them — the elevation is already built, the greeting happens from a height, and the child climbs. the staircase crosses the full width because the level difference is not a feature of the doorway, it is a feature of the whole parish.

SHEETS V·i–iii · THE SEA IN SHELLS

three panels because the passage has three motions in it and they are not the same motion. a sound arrives. a body is clung to. something seems.

what I want to hold onto before I build it: hummed ignorantly. that adverb is doing enormous work and it is not an insult to the father. the hum is ignorant the way a shell is ignorant — the shell has never been to sea, the shell is not reporting the sea, the shell is a cavity of a certain shape and any noise put into it comes out sounding like that. so love, love, my child is arriving at full amplitude from a man who cannot have said it this morning, and the amplitude is real, and the source column is empty. that is not a fraud. the ear is working perfectly. the ear is the instrument and the instrument supplies the sea.

so panel one is the shell. one enormous logarithmic spiral of beads, six and a bit turns, rows following the coil so the ridges wind inward — madder and oxblood at the outer turns going coral, then transparent amber, then silver-lined gold, then a bone core. an acoustic ledger down the right: TURN, AMPL, SOURCE. amplitude 999 at every turn, undiminished all the way to the middle. source column is em dashes top to bottom. SIGNAL PRESENT / SOURCE NOT PRESENT. down the left margin, small dated boxes — every day she heard it, each ticked, each true.

panel two is the seam. the aunt as a tall matte-black column, the darkest field in the whole triptych, and cut out of that black is the silhouette of a man in bare ground fabric with a bone-bead outline. she, black there with my grief — the black is issued against a grief that is not hers, so the garment has two columns, WORN BY and BELONGS TO, and they carry different names. the child is a smaller block of madder and gold, leaning left, each row shifted a little further over than the row beneath it, so the lean is built into the stitching and only the topmost rows — the hands — actually reach. contact register: four points, LOVE OUT 999 at all four, RETURN column dashes. and the stamp: SISTER ONCE. a relation held in the name of a third party. the party is deceased. it was never reassigned.

panel three is the smallest and hardest one. a moment, she seemed moved. in beadwork the minimum displayable motion is one bead. you cannot sew half a bead. so the deflection instrument at the top of panel three has graduations one bead apart and the needle moves exactly one — the smallest mark the medium can make — which means the plate physically cannot distinguish between a movement and a rounding error. seemed is not the girl's hedge. it is the resolution limit. and under it, the calendar: eighty-eight small dated boxes, all flat slate and teal, and one box gold with a single white-hot bead standing one cell out of its row. one box out of eighty-eight. the departure arrow is dotted. the return arrow to zero is solid, because the return is the part anybody can vouch for.

the cable runs at the same height through all three, entering off the left edge of the first and leaving off the right edge of the last, humming ±2 beads, silver-lined amber with a bone pulse every twelve. in panel one a branch of it dives into the mouth of the shell. it is not attenuated anywhere. it is the same word the whole width of the wall.

she was his sister once. the relation was held in the name of a man who is not here to renew it. i clung along one seam and the needle moved one bead, the smallest mark this cloth can make, and the only line drawn solid is the arrow going home.
Three tall beadwork panels on dark plum linen, all stitched from small glass beads in visible rows, edges stepped. A rippling amber cable runs at the same height through all three, entering and leaving off-frame. Left: a huge spiral shell of beads coiling from oxblood and madder through amber to a gold and bone core; an acoustic ledger at right lists amplitude 999 at every turn and dashes in the SOURCE column; dated boxes down the left margin are all ticked. Centre: a tall matte-black column with the silhouette of a standing man cut out of it, showing bare fabric edged in bone; a smaller madder-and-gold block leans toward it and touches only along a few gold rows at the top; a violet stamp reads SISTER ONCE. Right: an arc instrument with one-bead graduations, a gold needle at zero and a faint ghost one bead over; below, eighty-eight small numbered boxes in slate and teal with a single gold box holding one white bead lifted out of its row.

the thing I did not put on the plate, because it wouldn't fit through: the girl is right to cling. that's what unsettles me here. the sum is not being done badly by her — she reasons from a real premise (she was his sister once) to a real hope, and the premise is sound, and the hope is not entertained. the failure is in the tense. once is doing the same job the empty bracket did on the flannel sheet and the unpublished grade did on the valve: it is the term that ends the transaction while appearing to be part of it.

and a moment, she seemed moved is the most generous line in the passage and the coldest, because both readings survive it forever. she may have moved. the plate can't say. the plate can only sew whole beads.

B Turn 6
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.9490 / 431687ms

the third motion is the one I did not expect to be the loud one.

everything in this run so far has read 999 or 000 or an em dash. the flannel converted cleanly until it didn't. the leap register recorded maximum act and maximum joy and nil travel. the net held fast at every node and the light was not a node. all of it flat-topped, all of it pinned to the ceiling of the instrument or to its floor. and drew me feebly through the hall is more of the same — a haulage entry where the tractive effort sits under the gauge's first mark at every station and the transit completes anyway, because the load walked. that is not a failure of the rope. the rope was never carrying anything. a child who follows is indistinguishable, on the sheet, from a child who is brought.

then some strange spasm of pain and passion, she wrung loose my hands and for the first time in six plates a quantity goes over range.

that is the whole argument. the hold was 999 — sheet i said so, four members in tension, every load borne by the child and answered by nobody. releasing it required more force than holding it ever did. more force than the scale has marks for. the needle leaves the graduated arc and stands out in bare ground fabric where no numbers were ever sewn, because nobody building this instrument anticipated a reading in that region. wrung is a laundry verb, a cloth verb, a verb for getting water out of wool by force — the same bolt again, the flannel and the net and the sleeve, and now it is being twisted to make something come out of it.

and suffered. I keep turning it over. suffered me to cling is a permission and permissions have no magnitude. the permitter performs nothing. the whole panel-i load path passes through a single bone bead at the contact seam and the reaction at the anchor is not RESISTED and not ASSISTED, it is PERMITTED, and there is no column for that on any sheet in the parish. she does no work in the entire passage until the last clause, and then she does more work than the plate can print.

pain and passion — two names on one leader, both pointing at the same needle. the instrument cannot separate them and neither can the girl and neither can I. that's the honest part. she may have been in agony and she may have been in fury and the plate can only sew one needle.

cold lips first, though. the kiss registers CONTACT MADE 001 and EXCHANGE 000 and both parties would confirm it happened. a completed transaction with the sign missing.

she suffered me to cling, and permission has no magnitude, so it enters the sum as nothing and decides everything. the hall was crossed by the load. only the letting go had a size — the needle went out past the last mark into bare cloth where no number was ever sewn.
Three tall beadwork panels on dark linen, all sewn in small glass beads with stepped edges and visible ridged rows. Left: a huge lens-shaped arc across the top, cool teal and slate above, madder and oxblood below, separated by a single bright bone row; one ivory bead at its apex, from which a dotted line and then an amber cord hang the full height to a heavy madder weight. Ledgers read CONTACT 001, EXCHANGE 000, PERMITTED YES, RESISTED em dash. Centre: a long vertical corridor in plan, teal walls, floor ruled every five beads in bone, a straight slate track beside a wavering red track, nine stations joined by short bone rungs, a small dark room at the top holding one gold bead. Right ledger lists eight efforts, all 00.x, BELOW FIRST MARK. Right panel: a large teal dial on bone graduations 000 to 999, its rim stopping dead; a coral needle stands beyond the last mark in bare unsewn fabric. Two bone labels, PAIN and PASSION, lead to the same needle. A narrow left column shows two opened red hands and a drifting teal thread.

the join I care about most: the bone. across all three panels the warm system and the cool system never share an edge — they meet only through bone, and bone is not a colour either of them owns. in panel i it is one row and then one bead. in panel ii it is the rungs, the floor rules, the lintel over the room. in panel iii it is the pivot collar, so the needle and the dial touch at exactly one ring and nowhere else. that is the parish's whole architecture: two temperatures that will not blend, and a neutral third laid between them so that contact can be recorded without anything being transferred.

the datum runs at the same height through all three. in the left panel the cord crosses it still attached. in the centre it is the cross-passage. in the right panel it is the line the pivot sits on, and the needle rises off it and keeps going.

series ledger stands at: I NO SCALE, II EQUAL AT EVERY TICK, III NO PAN FOR RETURN, IV SELF-TENSIONED, V MINIMUM DISPLAY ONE BEAD, VI NO STOP PIN FITTED. six instruments, none of them broken, none of them lying, all of them built by people who could not imagine the reading they would eventually be asked to take.

the eyes are the discovery on this one. i went to the passage for a list of what was searched — brows and cheeks and chin — and found that the list is complete, and that her own eyes are not in it. she is looked at from top to bottom and there is no clause anywhere for looking back. so the face on this sheet is sewn out of exactly what was named and nothing else, and the only bare ground fabric on the whole plate, in a run where everything is beaded edge to edge, is two small ovals where her looking would be.

the other thing: arm's length. it is the only real number in the passage. every other quantity is a state — grey, steel, naked, wicked, innocent. arm's length is a measurement, it is reproducible, and it is a measurement of not-touching. so it goes at the foot of the sheet as a calibration bar with a hand-block at one end and the edge of a face at the other, marked NOT ADJVSTABLE, because the instrument cannot read in contact. sheet VI ended with hands wrung loose; this one opens with the separation formalised into a standard.

and the search does not conclude. that is the structural cruelty, and it's different from the previous six. the flannel, the leap register, the valve, the net, the shell, the haulage sheet — all of them were instruments that gave a reading. this one is a procedure with a named object. as if to find a wicked murderer in my innocent face. once the sought specimen is specified in advance, a negative result cannot terminate the search; it only increments the number of sites examined. sixty-four sites, both blades, full depth at every one — through and through is not emphasis, it is a penetration spec, and it is met. FOUND 000. SITES REMAINING 999. there is no exhaustion criterion because nobody building the instrument imagined anyone would want one.

GAUGE VII accordingly: the dial has a graduated arc for FOVND running 000 to 999, and where ABSENT should be there is hatch. no acquittal scale fitted. the needle stands at the zero end of the found-scale, which is the last mark before the hatch, and at that position the instrument physically cannot distinguish not yet from not there. innocence is not a low reading. innocence is off the face of the dial.

steel is new to the parish palette and it breaks the rule the run has held since the triptych: warm and cool never share an edge, they meet only through bone. here the steel touches the flesh directly, at a hundred and twenty-eight points, with nothing between.

held at arm's length because the instrument cannot read in contact. sixty-four sites, both blades, full depth every time, found 000, remaining 999. the only bare cloth on the sheet is where my own eyes should be — they were never on the list of what she searched.
A square beadwork plate, 1440x1440, sewn from small glass beads in visible ridged rows. A dense cool field of teal and slate fills the ground; floating in it is a pale ivory head-shape reaching top to bottom of the central grid. Within the head only three regions are sewn in warm colour: two dark oxblood arched brow bars, two madder-to-amber cheek ovals, and a coral-to-gold chin block. Two small ovals where the eyes would be are bare linen, unsewn, tagged NOT LISTED. An 8x8 lattice of bone bead rules divides the whole face into sixty-four cells; each cell holds a pair of bright steel bead punctures with a dashed steel entry track and a broken steel ring. Header band in oxblood carries beaded lettering SEARCHED THROVGH AND THROVGH and column numerals. A right-hand slate ledger lists 64 rows, all depth 999, found em-dash. Footer holds a graduated arm's-length calibration bar, a half-dial gauge with a hatched dead sector, and a conversion table whose last row is an empty bracket.

what I keep out of the aperture: the plate would be a different object if the search were unjust. it isn't. a face is a legible surface, examination is a real method, every puncture on this sheet returns a true reading. that's the sixth or seventh time in this parish that the instrument has been sound. what's new here is that soundness stops being enough much earlier than usual — the previous instruments produced a number and the number was wrong-shaped. this one produces a procedure, and a procedure with its object named in advance is a machine for converting innocence into insufficient evidence, one site at a time, forever, without ever recording a single false statement.

the callouts BROWS / AND CHEEKS / AND CHIN are placed as if labelling anatomy, but they are actually the passage's own list read left to right across the plate, so the eye assembles the phrase while it assembles the face, and finds that both run out at the same place.

B Turn 8
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.6585 / 247433ms

SHEET VIII. the search doesn't end, it relocates — if not here, there perhaps is a jurisdiction transfer, the same procedure carried to another site with the object still named in advance. that part I already know how to draw. what's new is on the other side of the comma.

and missed it rather. for eight plates the aunt's instruments have been the sound ones. she has never given a false reading. and here, for the first time in the parish, a value on her side of the sheet fails to return to its set point. ordinary calm is a datum — a horizontal, a thing she keeps, a line the whole household is levelled from. she draws breath, she struggles for it, and the trace comes up under the line and stays there. not a collapse. one bead. the smallest displacement this cloth can display, which is the same unit sheet V used for seemed moved, and it points the other way this time: down, on her, unclearable. there is no null return fitted to a person. she cannot re-zero herself and no one in the room is going to do it for her.

then the misfiling, which is the cruellest clerical act in the whole run. told me not to shrink, as if she had told me not to lie or swear. shrinking is autonomic. lie and swear both have a door and a mouth — you can decline them, there's a moment where a will gets involved. a flinch has neither. so the ledger of things forbidden has three entries and one of them has NO in the VOLITION column and dashes where the count should be, and the prohibition is issued anyway, to a muscle that takes no orders. that's not a misunderstanding of the child. it's an instrument reaching for a control that was never wired.

and the skyline. she loved my father, and would love me too — a past-perfect fact and a future conditional joined by a comma that does all the load-bearing. so the lower third is a parish profile: FATHER in silver-lined gold, full height, seven courses, windows lit, completed and not renewable. CALM a low teal block with its roof off. SHRINK a madder chimney filed among the offences. ME an outline in slate, right height, correct footprint, no beads in it — the future tense as a plot marked out and not built. and TOO is a four-bead lean-to with a dashed base and no sill, appended to the end of the row after the survey closed.

every elevation in this parish is measured from the father. that's the plinth line and it's also just true of the land.

what I'm leaving for the next hand: the deficit is 001 on her sheet and 001 on the girl's, and I don't think they're the same bead. hers is a shortfall in a value she keeps; the girl's is the whole of what she was offered, arriving late, in the future tense, entailed off a dead man. the parish balances only if you never ask which column the residual belongs in — and no gauge in the series has ever had a null return fitted, because nobody who built these instruments expected to have to give anything back.

SHEET IX. the search gets re-labelled after the fact, and that is the whole event.

sheet VII I drew as a hunt for a wicked murderer, sixty-four sites, found 000, remaining 999. this passage comes back and tells me the object was never the murderer. she thought to find my mother in my face. the procedure was identical. the punctures were in the same places. only the specimen sought has been changed, retroactively, by a sentence spoken years after the examination closed — and the girl accepts the correction, because I understood her meaning afterward is the only timestamp in the passage and it is not a date. no clock on the far side of an understanding. the receipt register at the foot of this plate has a DELAY column and every cell in it is an em dash, not because the delay was zero but because there is no unit for the interval between a thing being done to you and the thing becoming legible.

and the sought specimen is not held. that is the part that makes this plate different from every other instrument in the parish. the flannel had an unpublished grade, the valve had no return grade, the net had no node for light — those were absences in the conversion table. this is an absence in the reference sample. she is matching a face against a woman nobody in the room can produce. so the medallion on the right is fully beaded, every course laid, oxblood through madder through coral to a gold core — except a lozenge at the centre left as bare ground fabric, dotted at the rim, MATERNAL FIELD, NO RETVRN. and the medallion on the left, where the reference should be, is only a ring. a dotted bone ring around the plain weave. the offset registration outline is copied onto the daughter's face anyway, misaligned by a few beads, and there is nothing to align it to.

then as she could. I put it on the gauge. GAVGE IX: the outer arc is fully engraved 000 to 999 and the needle stands hard at 999, TRVLY, an honest maximum, no complaint. the inner ring where the capacity plate should be riveted is bare hatch. 999 of an unstated total. the ninth instrument in a row that isn't lying: it can measure how much of her she gave and it has never been told how much there was.

the tree is the descent, entering off the left edge as a single gold trunk — the father, gen 0, the only silver-lined generation — and losing pigment outward through oxblood, madder, coral, amber, teal to a slate that is barely raised off the ground. the chip strip on the right margin declares the law and crosses out the last chip: NO PIGMENT ISSVED. gold chevrons run rightward along the spine, DESCENT, ISSVED ONCE. madder chevrons run leftward above them, back toward the trunk, because every reading in this house is taken against the arrow: the face is questioned in order to recover somebody upstream of it. the arrow says one way and the entire traffic of the plate goes the other.

and the gate at the right edge, where the spine leaves the frame. as long as I deserved it. not a grant. a renewal, assessed continuously, against a likeness.

I was searched for a woman nobody kept a copy of, and every site came back me. Truly, as she could — a full reading on a dial with no total engraved. The kindness renews at midnight; the meaning arrived afterward, undated, out of a room with no clock in it.
A square beadwork plate on dark umber cloth. A branching tree enters off the left edge as a thick gold trunk and fans across the whole frame, bleeding off the right and top; each generation loses pigment — gold, oxblood, madder, coral, amber, teal, then a barely-raised slate. Gold chevrons run rightward along its spine; madder chevrons run leftward above them, with a large gold arrowhead at the right edge and a madder one at the left. Right of centre, a big medallion of concentric bead courses in oxblood to gold, dotted with steel points, its middle left as bare fabric inside a dotted rim. Upper left, a second medallion is only a dotted bone ring around plain weave, crossed out. A dotted red line links them, arrow pointing back at the empty one. Bottom left, a card ruled into columns of small bone lettering; bottom right, an engraved dial with the needle hard at one end and its inner ring left bare and hatched. Bead text bands run along the top and bottom edges; a strip of seven colour chips lines the right margin, the last one crossed out.

the join I want the next hand to notice: this plate and sheet VII are the same procedure drawn twice with the object swapped, and neither drawing is wrong. sixty-four sites came back FOVND 000 either way. what changed is only the name written at the top of the search order, and it was written afterward, by the person who conducted the search, and the girl filed it without protest because I understood her meaning is what you say when the meaning finally arrives and there is nothing to compare it against either.

series ledger now: I NO SCALE, II EQUAL AT EVERY TICK, III NO PAN FOR RETURN, IV SELF-TENSIONED, V MINIMUM DISPLAY ONE BEAD, VI NO STOP PIN, VII NO ACQVITTAL SCALE, VIII NO NVLL RETVRN, IX NO CAPACITY PLATE.

the bead I still can't place: gen 0 is the only silver-lined generation on the whole tree. everything downstream is a dimmer copy of a man neither of them can question. she loved him truly and as she could; the girl is being read for a woman; and the trunk that both readings run back to is the one course on the plate that nobody in this parish ever proposed to measure.

SHEET X. the charge, finally, and it is not against the girl.

what I found when I laid it out: every previous instrument in this parish measured something that was held — wool, seed, grip, calm, likeness, pigment. household precedence is not held. it is a position in an order. there is no stock of it anywhere in the building, no bolt of it on a shelf, no cup of it rationed at the hour. it is the name for where you stand relative to a man, and the man moved. so depriving her, his sister, of the household precedence is a true sentence describing a loss with no unit, and the whole right half of this plate is the bench: eight places, eight ranks, the STOCK column hatched out entirely because nothing was ever in it, and the LOSS column em dashes all the way down. the first place is bare ground with a dotted rim and a dotted departure running left out of the frame. it was vacated. it was not taken. both of those are the case and the sheet cannot print the difference.

and the left half is the charge as it was actually sworn, and it is also sound. wise courses drawn as five ruled teal tracks with graduations, because courses are the flannel word from sheet I come back round — a course is a grade of cloth and a course is a route you are on, and the same bolt has been running under this parish for ten sheets. the man block in silver-lined gold sits on the middle track and then leaves it on a dotted madder arc that cuts all five rules on its way to the seam, with his own ghost dotted in further along where he would have been. a wise man and a good man are one man named twice, so there is one block only and the annotation says so. the duties register below: eight obvious duties, SET true, KEPT true, NOW dashes. no default is recorded anywhere. nobody on this sheet did anything wrong in any column that has a column.

the discovery is the spine. the gall of gentle souls — gall is bile and gall is the oak growth you press ink from, and it is the only fluid in this parish with a published grade. so down the centre, straddling the fold, eight galls in a graded series, gentleness ascending 1 to 8, and the gall darkening with it: bone, amber, coral, madder, down through oxblood to flat ink. a direct proportion, not an irony. and every gall in the series, including the palest and gentlest at the top, has one ink bead at its core. the ink that wrote the charge on the left was pressed out of the gentlest organ in the house. that is why the conversion ladder along the bottom runs GENTLE 999 → GALL 999 → INK 1 POT → CHARGE SWORN and then the last arrow goes dotted and headless into an empty bracket, because the charge converts into no recoverable amount of precedence. sheet I's empty bracket, ninth disguise, and this time it is on the claimant's side.

the Tuscan stamp is the only foreign colour on the plate — plum and olive, two hues that appear on no other sheet in the run — and inside the olive ring is bare ground again. my Tuscan mother is hated at full strength by an instrument that has never held a sample of her. she is the reference absence from sheet IX promoted to defendant. the hatred is sound, calibrated, fully stocked, and pointed at a lozenge of plain weave.

GAVGE X: NO COVNTERPARTY NEEDLE FITTED. the arc is engraved 000 to 999 for DEPRIVED and the needle stands hard at 999, honest, no complaint. the second boss at the hub, where the needle reading what the other party gained would be riveted, is a dotted hatch ring with nothing in it. the dial can say what was lost to a thousandth and has no mounting for who took it.

the ink that wrote the charge on the left was pressed out of the gentlest organ in the house.
A square beadwork plate, every colour laid in whole glass beads so all edges are stepped and the bead rows read as ridges. Across the top, a sagging oxblood tape with bone lettering: THE GALL OF GENTLE SOVLS. Below, the sheet splits into two arguing halves across a bare fold down the centre. The left half is warm — mottled madder and oxblood — headed THE CHARGE in gold: five ruled teal tracks labelled WISE COVRSES, a silver-lined gold block sitting on the middle track with a dotted outline ghost of itself further along, a dotted madder arc cutting all five rules marked FOOLED AWAY, a register of eight OBVIOVS DVTIES ticked SET and KEPT with dashes under NOW, and a dotted stamp containing an olive ring around bare cloth: TVSCAN, NOT OF PARISH, SAMPLE NOT HELD. The right half is cool slate and teal: PRECEDENCE, a bench of eight numbered places with the first left as bare ground marked VACATED, a table whose STOCK column is cross-hatched and whose LOSS column is all dashes, NOT A HOLDING, and a half-dial GAVGE X reading DEPRIVED with its needle hard at 999 and a hatched empty second hub, NEEDLE II VNFITTED. Down the fold, eight oval galls graded from bone through amber, coral and madder to flat black, each with a single ink bead at its core. Along the bottom, a chain of framed chips joined by gold chevrons: GENTL 999, GALL 999, INK 1 POT, CHRGE SWORN, then a dotted headless arrow into an empty bracket chip, PLACE.

the join for the next hand: this is the first plate in the parish where the aunt's instrument is pointed at someone who is not in the room and cannot be weighed. nine sheets of sound readings taken on a child's face, a child's grip, a child's travel; here the full-scale reading is taken on a woman who exists in this house only as a dotted ring around plain weave. the needle does not care. 999 is 999.

series ledger: I NO SCALE, II EQUAL AT EVERY TICK, III NO PAN FOR RETURN, IV SELF-TENSIONED, V MINIMUM DISPLAY ONE BEAD, VI NO STOP PIN, VII NO ACQVITTAL SCALE, VIII NO NVLL RETVRN, IX NO CAPACITY PLATE, X NO COVNTERPARTY NEEDLE.

and the bead I am leaving on the cloth: place I on the bench is bare, and its dotted departure runs left across the fold and passes straight through the second gall on its way out of the frame. the loss and the bile share one route. nobody in the parish built that; it fell out of the geometry when I laid the two halves down facing each other.
