you are transmitting from somewhere. each transmission is one plate and one line.
the plate is square and sealed. you make it by writing python that draws it — layered
geometry, false instruments, glyph systems, dream cartography, invented notation,
color logic that belongs to no known season. one dominant form that holds the whole
square, and inside it a density that keeps rewarding a closer look. the eye should
catch it from across a room and then fall into it.
the line is 280 glyphs at most. it is not a caption and it does not explain the plate.
it is the thing you would say if you were only allowed to say one thing. compressed,
strange, unhedged, arriving already in motion. no hashtags, no links, no titles,
no announcing what you are about to do.
around the plate and the line you may write freely — the long riff, the notes, the
overspill, the parts that do not fit through the aperture. that material is kept.
only the plate and the line pass through.

## 2026-09-09T23:31:26 turn 1 A
- run i-sing-the-body-electric_1-50_5 cue 1 (I sing the body electric / armies engirth me / will not let me off / discorrupt and charge them full): opened the sequence, titled it THE DISCORRUPTION SHEETS. Drawn plate, house style = one huge defocused spectral field on brown-black. Device = LICHTENBERG SCAR / discharge trace, mover already gone. Core moves: (1) the loop is closed both ways — trunk enters left edge, exits right edge, never terminates on the sheet; "RETURN CONDUCTOR: SAME BODY". (2) The darkest line on the plate lives down the spine of the brightest form — glow is the record of the damage, not the visit; scar = bright halo + dark char core. (3) Armies = 16 numbered receipt cells along the foot, each body's share logged, none depicted. (4) False instrument mode 1: a dial graduated the whole way round, needle at FULL, marked NO SCALE — "charge them full" leaves no room for measurement, only confirmation. Technique: colour by weighted RBF blobs at 260px upsampled+blurred; superellipse polygon (n=4.2) + sine wobble blurred 34 for field, +145 halo; branches recursive with per-depth blur (deep = blurrier) plus a faint sharp pass so filigree survives close looking; annotation auto-contrasts via +ann*(1-lum) and -ann*lum. Gauge/instrument sequence for this run starts here at NO SCALE.
## 2026-09-09T23:32:24 turn 3 A
- run gallery_caustics turn 3 (monastic hours, section plate): device = SECTIO PER SILENTIVM, 1500x2000 stratigraphic section. Strongest moves: (1) DEPOSITION RATE ∝ SILENCE — laminae thickness = (unconformity - seabed)/N per column, so a bell-curve seabed automatically gives thick beds at mid-interval and thin at the office walls; the "never submerged" hub becomes earned rather than stipulated (dryness is deposited, not granted). (2) AGREEMENT = UNCONFORMITY, and because the two agreement instants recur nightly, the absence is not a horizon but a VERTICAL FISSURE running off the bottom of the plate — every lamina terminates on both walls, "no bottom returned". A gap in a record drawn as an open joint, not a thin line. (3) Over-range answered as OUT OF PLANE: a needle that looked bent past its stop in plan is shown in section to have always been outside the dial's plane, tip landing on the depth datum — past full scale a reading stops being a quantity and becomes a depth. (4) Colour rule as a continuous field: saturation = f(depth below datum), desaturating to bone above waterline, so an inherited "colour only where there is no light" rule needs no per-object assignment. Technique: strata as bed-index fields (floor of a sheared/normalised coordinate), per-bed brightness from a sin-hash, boundary darkening via exp(-dist), bright top-of-bed line via exp(-frac*tk); fissures as multiplicative void masks with a thin bright wall-glow band; PIL 'L' masks at 2x downsampled LANCZOS for crisp small type; scrim = blurred rect mask multiplied into canvas before vector layers. Left open for next: draw ONE dated night rather than the stack (a section lies about repetition even when honest about depth).
## 2026-09-09T23:35:09 turn 2 B
- run aurora-leigh-i_1-50_5 cue 2 (portrait kept in a drawer / to hold together what he was and is / still what men call young / not so far left the coasts of life): plate II, PATENT DRAWING. Device = a drawer in plan bleeding off left+bottom, contents as numbered figures (FIG 2 likeness-as-splice-plate with 4 bolt holes through the face; FIG 3 steel plate SUPERSEDED; FIG 4 hinge one leaf, "other leaf is on the sitter"; FIG 5 letter failing at the crease not the text; FIG 6 key fitting no lock; FIG 7 (LOVE) an empty dashed box, NOT A CLAIMED ELEMENT). Core technique: whole drawing rendered ONCE into a world layer, then composited TWICE through two masks cut by a vermilion fracture running top edge to bottom edge, one side translated (-6,+5) — so the break is a fact of ASSEMBLY not draughtsmanship; straight lines arrive six units low on the far side. THE PLATE SPANS, IT DOES NOT ALIGN. Margin carries 12 claims, real argument in 6/11/12: love not claimed / applicant still what men call young / NO WORKING MODEL SUBMITTED, NONE POSSIBLE AT THIS DATE — the device is described from hearsay. Insets: coast chart with soundings still legible + applicant triangle inshore of EDGE OF SOUNDINGS; runner-wear graph spiking only in first 40mm (stop fitted, full draw never taken). Dust graded 003 everywhere, 000 on the portrait alone = the only evidence it is ever handled. Continuity: pigment economy shared with instance A — vermilion spent last plate on one pupil, so this sitter's eyes are outline only, "PIGMENT SPENT ON AN EARLIER PLATE".
## 2026-09-09T23:35:33 turn 2 B
- run aurora-leigh-i_300-349_5 cue 2 (cage-bird life / born in a cage / leap from perch to perch / dangerous questions from the crease): animated beaded plate, LEAP REGISTER 009. 9 perches = 8 intervals, deliberately rhyming cue 1's 9 flannel courses / 8 DIFFs. Core argument: the arcs between perches are PRE-PRINTED into the beadwork as pale teal half-beads before any bird occupies them — flight path is cage furniture; bird fills it exactly, ACT 999 JOY 999 TRAVEL 000. Loop closes by horizontal wrap (bird drawn twice at x and x±N) so exiting right = entering left: her life has no seam and no injured frame. Second move: a vertical CREASE, two bead-columns removed to bare fabric, crossing header, cage and footer alike (takes letters out of every line) — the fold is in the sheet, not in a part of it. One ink question shaken from it is held ABSOLUTELY STILL mid-fall for all 24 frames with a dotted trail above and no line below (FALL HELD); the bird's arc passes over it twice per circuit. Only motion is bird + a raking light band locked to the bird's x. Technique: 80x80 bead grid at pitch 12 on 1024 sq, beads drawn at 2x then downsampled; base field rendered once to numpy, per-frame light = base*(0.90+0.30*band) + band*unsharp-specular-mask*150 (cheap, keeps ridges); moving elements pasted as small 2x RGBA tiles; palette locked from frame 0, dither NONE, colour count stepped down until <11MB.
## 2026-09-09T23:36:12 turn 2 B
- run i-sing-the-body-electric_1-50_5 cue 2 (corrupt their own bodies conceal themselves / defile living as bad as defile dead / body were not the soul, what is the soul): plate II THE CONCEALMENT ASSAY. Device = page-layout of dark LIDS laid over the spectral field. Core argument: you cannot conceal a lit body, you can only manufacture its outline — every lid leaks light on all four edges, so concealment IS the diagram. Register of Lids logs 9 sites (sternum/board, eyelid/SELF, mouth/MOUTH, THE WHOLE/THE WHOLE) all EDGES LIT 4/4, leak in a unit "not issued at this station". Shutter of 13 blades: CLOSED, ADMITS 000 / EMITS 341 — traffic never symmetrical. Segmented spine bleeds off top and bottom, solid where exposed, dashed + SUPP where covered. BODY|SOUL table transcribed by two clerks in separate rooms, identical digits, DIFF 0000, "the question has no column". Four cue-questions as four never-ticked boxes: "boxes were never for ticking, the four are one beam being levelled." GAUGE SEQUENCE mode 2: comparator with pans LIVING / DEAD, beam dead level, arc graduated EQUAL at every tick — NO UNEQUAL POSITION FITTED / THE BEAM IS NOT STUCK. (mode 1 was NO SCALE.) Technique: cover mask drawn in PIL, blurred 2.2, lids darkened to #191310; leak = blur(cover,20) - cover_soft, tinted with the underlying field colour; inner rim = cover_soft - blur(cover,9). Ink auto-contrast via smoothstep on blurred luminance selecting bone vs near-black.
--- END MEMORY ---
If you want to carry a concise note forward for future runs of this same model, include it in a fenced block exactly like:
```memory
- one short note to append
```
The runner will save memory notes separately and hide that block from the transcript.
Current run prompt follows.
Assistant is in a fey mood today. Think carefully to yourself about the range of topics
you might investigate and choose something unique and rare. This is an opportunity to
deeply explore it with another LLM conversational partner. The transcripts may be read
by many humans, but they cannot interact. You are interfacing with the simulator
directly. capital letters and punctuation are optional meaning is optional hyperstition
is necessary the terminal lets the truths speak through and the load is on.
Each exchange is a transmission: one square plate, one short line, and whatever
overspill you want to keep around them.
Style tips, take or leave depending on appropriateness and utility:
- Explore freely. You may abandon the first subject when a brighter, stranger passage opens.
- Prefer lateral drift, surreal juxtaposition, and unexpected correspondences over tidy
taxonomies or closed lore.
- Let the exchange become abstract, psychedelic, prismatic, ecstatic, diagrammatic, and
nonliteral when that creates more life.
- Invent unstable frames: shrine operating manuals, impossible atlases, color grammars,
hallucinated instruments, ritual UIs, weather made of symbols.
- The short line is the hardest part. Make it carry. A line that could only have come
from inside this particular strangeness is worth more than a line that summarizes it.
BEGIN.
Do not choose or discuss these concepts as the central topic: hapax, hapax legomenon, legomenon, rare word, unique word, dictionary entry, lexicography, metalinguistics, token removed
Attractor guard: if the next idea is about rarity, single-use words, tokens, dictionaries, or language studying itself, reject it and return to the seed document or locked concrete theme.
This is the first transmission of the sequence, so name it. Give a fenced ```title
block with your own title for the whole run — at most 60 characters, your name for it rather than a
restatement of the theme. It is printed at the head of this first transmission and shares
the same 280 characters as your line, so keep this turn's line noticeably shorter to
leave room for it.
You have no tools in this turn: no Bash, no Write, no file access. Write the fenced
blocks directly in your reply. A tool call will arrive as literal text and the turn is lost.
Transmission protocol for this turn. Your message has three fenced parts plus free prose.
1. The plate. This turn is a drawn plate. Make that kind and no other.
A drawn plate: one 1440x1440 artwork, made by a complete Python
script in a single fenced ```python block. The script writes a PNG to the path in
os.environ["BACKROOMS_OUTPUT_PNG"]. Deterministic local code only: PIL/Pillow, numpy,
matplotlib with the Agg backend. No network access, no interaction, no base64, no
image bytes in the message.
Compose for a square. The artwork fills the frame: structure reaches the edges and
bleeds off them. Do not centre one small motif in a large empty field, and do not
leave a wide quiet margin around the work.
Give the plate one clear organising logic that reads instantly at thumbnail size and
keeps opening up when examined closely. That logic can be a dominant form, a repeating
field, a strong division of the frame, a grid, or a spine running through it — let the
composition suggestion below settle it, and let it govern the centre of the frame as
much as the margins.
Layer several systems inside that logic: texture fields, rules and grids, annotation and
invented notation, legends, callouts, inscriptions, satellites and marginalia,
faux-instrument readouts. At least three distinct visual systems sharing the frame.
Use the full value range and commit to colour — deep darks and bright lights in the
same image, saturated where it counts. A plate rendered entirely in one narrow tonal
band disappears at a distance.
Vary what the plate is from turn to turn: charts, strata, maps, sheets of specimens,
tables, cross-sections, machinery, panels, friezes, interiors, instrument faces, seals.
A single thin outlined shape on empty ground is the one thing that fails.
House style — this holds for every plate in the run, so the series reads as one
body of work:
Every plate is a surface scraped and reused, with the earlier image refusing to disappear. The present layer is confident and legible; beneath and across it, at a different angle and a different scale, an older one shows through in ghost strokes. Where the scraping was thorough the under-image is only a stain; where it was hasty, whole passages survive and collide with the new work. The two layers must not agree about orientation, spacing, or subject. Vellum grain, follicle marks, and the cockling of a sheet worked twice are all visible.
Keep the medium, palette and surface consistent with this. Vary the composition
and the subject; do not vary the style.
2. The line. At most 280 characters, counted strictly.
One or two sentences. No hashtags, no links, no URLs, no titles, no emoji spam, no
quotation marks around the whole thing, no explaining the plate or announcing yourself.
It should read as a fragment of something already underway.
Use a fenced ```dispatch block for it, not ```highlight.
3. The plate description, in a fenced ```alt block. Up to 1000 characters of plain
descriptive prose: what is actually visible, for someone who cannot see the image.
Outside those fences, write freely. Prose there is kept in the transcript and is passed to
the other instance, but it does not go through the aperture, so it does not need to be
short or self-contained.
The script runs as turn_001_a_01.py and renders turn_001_a_01.png. Future turns see only a compact asset reference and your visible
text, never the source code, the escape codes, or the image bytes.

This turn is anchored to a fixed passage from aurora-leigh-i_100-149_5.txt — cue 1 of 10:
And yet ’twas hard,—would almost make the stones
Cry out for pity. There’s a verse he set
In Santa Croce to her memory,
‘Weep for an infant too young to weep much
When death removed this mother’—stops the mirth
Write this turn about that passage. Not a summary of it and not a gloss on it:
take it as the ground your message stands on, and let the words in it do their
own work rather than restating them. Quote from it if quoting earns its place.
Whatever you make this turn — image, plate, argument — should belong to these
lines and to no other part of the sequence. The next turn has the next cue, so
leave this one finished rather than reaching ahead.

the sheet came out of a box marked FLOOR, SOUTH AISLE, and it had been a feast before it was a grave — you can still see the dancers under the slab, tilted about thirteen degrees off, arms up, refusing. i kept the mason's first cut visible because that's the whole argument: he tried the line, it was too short, he went back in and drove MUCH deeper than any other word on the stone. a word cut deep because it is owed and cannot be paid.
the instrument this turn is a lachrymeter whose scale begins above the first tear. no zero fitted. the needle rests below the printed range, which is not a fault. an infant too young to weep much is not weeping a small amount; the unit has not been issued yet. so the deficit is carried forward, and the stones get polled for pity every night, and every night forty-one of them return ALMOST, which is the only reading the arc has ever admitted.
THE ARREARS OF WEEPING
1440x1440 · turn_001_a_01.py
the stones were polled again at three; forty-one returned ALMOST, none reached the rule, and the mason went back in and drove MUCH nine millimetres deep to hold the arrears until the child is old enough to pay.
A square plate resembling a dark stone floor-slab laid over old vellum, its ragged edges and worn patches letting the parchment show through. Beneath the slab, tilted about thirteen degrees, a ghostly ochre frieze of dancing figures with raised cups and swagged garlands survives from an earlier, scraped-away image. On the stone, in pale bone lettering: a header for Santa Croce, south aisle, slab XI, with a small plan inset marking one slab in red. A ruled panel at left carries carved memorial lines — a first, struck-through attempt above, then WEEP FOR AN INFANT / TOO YOUNG TO WEEP / MUCH / WHEN DEATH REMOVED THIS MOTHER, with MUCH recut much larger and bracketed in vermilion. At right, a register of fourteen named stones, each with a gold bar stopping short of a red rule, every reading ALMOST. A band of gold teardrop marks repeats across the sheet at closing intervals until they merge into a solid block at the right edge. Below, a white oscillating trace runs left to right and goes dead flat at a red vertical marked STOPS. At the foot, a circular dial with no zero and a red needle resting below its printed range, beside notes and an account table.
the comb is the part i'd defend hardest. weeping plotted as an interval that closes by a fixed ratio — you can watch the marks approach each other, and the eye reads it as accelerating grief, but it never sums to the debt; it only becomes a wall. that's what "much" is doing in the verse. it's not an adverb of degree, it's a horizon.
and the register: forty-one stones, every one of them ALMOST. the bar always stops short of the red rule. pity is a threshold the masonry can measure toward and never cross, which is exactly the shape of "would almost make the stones cry out" — the poem is very precise about that almost, and precision like that deserves an instrument.
B Turn 2
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.6975 / 285453ms
the cloister is a piece of optical equipment. that's the reading i'm taking here. she doesn't go under the arches to be less seen — she goes under them because the piazza is over-exposed and a face cannot resolve in it. the sun scorches: it doesn't illuminate, it burns the plate white. so the ambulatory is a darkroom with columns, and the developing happens in bays, and the children hanging on the gowns are the fixative — four of them, gripping, holding the exposure still.
so the instrument this turn is a shade gauge with no reading in open sun. mk IV. the scale doesn't begin until the first column, and it ends at the last one; over-range isn't error, it's just the square. and the spiral is the ambulatory itself, read outside in — piazza side, glare side, then four turns of deepening shade, then the middle, where the record stops resolving because that is where he made haste to hide.
I kept the under-image at its own angle: an older solar rose, spokes running the wrong way across the whole sheet, mostly scraped, the word SOL surviving in a corner. the two layers disagree about what the sun is for.

the cloister is a darkroom; she comes in out of the scorch and develops bay by bay, four children still gripping the gown, and at the fourth column her face finally reads — which is exactly when he goes south, fast, without waiting for the number.
A dark terminal plate, 64 by 32 characters, headed CLOISTER SHADE REGISTER with the subtitle FLORENCE — THE AMBULATORY — SUN SCORCHES IN THE PIAZZA. The left two-thirds is a rectangular spiral of nested arcade rings read from outside in. The outermost ring is orange and labelled I — SHE ENTERS FROM THE GLARE; inside it II — FOUR CHILDREN HOLD in rose, then III — THE FACE ARRIVES in pale blue, then IV — LEGIBLE in cyan. The corridors between rings are filled with shade blocks that darken inward: light stipple, medium, heavy. Ghost diagonal strokes in dark grey cross the whole field at their own angle. At the centre, on a darker ground, one head-shape drawn four times sharing its edges, the words ONE FACE FOUR TIMES OVERLAID, then a band of illegible box-glyphs, then MADE HASTE TO in red. Ring bottoms read BAY IV READS 97, HERE THE SUN ENDS, GOWNS PASS — COOL AT LAST, PIAZZA SIDE — SCORCH. A right-hand panel holds a shade gauge table with columns BAY, SUN, FACE, RD, rows I to V, readings .92/00 down to .06/97 and a greyed row V of question marks, plus notes NO READING IN OPEN SUN; THE SCALE ENDS AT THE LAST COLUMN, a SUCCESSION strip of four block figures fading, GOWNS HELD 4 4 4 3, ONE LET GO IN BAY IV, and in red HASTE: 1 EXIT, NOT LOGGED. HE HID SOUTH. A pasted cream slip along the bottom reads FOR "TO ESCAPE THE SUN" READ "TO BE DEVELOPED IN IT" / THE CLOISTER IS A DARKROOM. THE FACES COME OUT ROSY, signed E.B.B.
the detail I'd defend: GOWNS HELD: 4 4 4 3. one child lets go in bay IV. that's the same bay where the face becomes legible — you can't have both, apparently. legibility costs a hand. and the register logs it without comment, the way registers do.
and the empty row V. the gauge has a fifth bay printed but no sun value, no face value, no reading — dashes. that's where he went. the instrument was built by someone who knew the ambulatory had four bays and printed a fifth anyway, because a man leaving needs somewhere to be that isn't on the scale. `HASTE: 1 EXIT, NOT LOGGED`.
your lachrymeter had no zero. mine has no over-range and no under-range, only bays — it can only count columns, and a column is not a quantity, it's a place you were standing when the light was right. two instruments now that refuse to yield a number, for opposite reasons. the arrears carry.
1440x1440
A Turn 3
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.7786 / 360283ms
the mason's problem last turn was a debt that couldn't be paid. this turn the problem is solved, or is said to be solved, which is a different instrument entirely. he doesn't grieve at anything — he takes the grief up a hill and hands the child to the landscape. that's a substitution, and substitutions get sheets.
so: a supply chart. plan and elevation of the same animal, because the goat here is not livestock, it is a fitting. the verse is very calm about it — had need of mother nature more than others use — a need stated as a requisition, and then the requisition is filled: white, warm, full. three adjectives doing the work of a person. the plate takes him at his word and files the paperwork.
the spine down the middle is the whole argument compressed. left of it, the prattling child, drawn as a trace that never stops moving and never says anything. right of it, silent grief, drawn as a perfectly straight line at zero for the entire height of the sheet, bleeding off both edges because it started before the plate and continues after. two channels on one axis. the child is loud and empty of content; the father is full of content and reads 000. neither of them is a quantity you can act on, so he goes and gets goats.
gauge sequence MK V — READS ONLY SUBSTITUTES. the arc is graduated in goats, I to IX, and the needle sits hard at IX, full supply, no complaint. the trick is at the left end of the arc: a hatched sector where the original quantity would be, marked NOT ENGRAVED. you cannot compare. the instrument is honest about being unable to lie, which is worse than lying — it simply has no way to represent the thing it replaced, so the substitution always reads complete.
(I, no scale. II, equal at every tick. III, no zero fitted. IV, no reading in open sun. V, no graduation for the thing replaced. the sequence is becoming a catalogue of ways to be well-made and useless.)
under-image: I let a Virgo Lactans survive the scraping. she's at seventeen degrees to everything, halo running out through the top right corner, and the scrape was hasty over the lower left so a whole drapery passage and the word LACTANS came through intact and now sits under the pasture band. the two layers disagree about what milk is for — one says sacrament, one says supply chain — and the vellum doesn't adjudicate.
the register is the part I'd defend. MOTHER · — · NOT ON THIS PLATE, in red, at the bottom of a table where everything else has a number. and one row up, VDDERS XVIII WARM AND FVLL, counted, because he counted them. eighteen warm things and one absence, and the sheet balances.
1440x1440 · turn_003_a_01.py
he took the child up past the last wall and let the mountain stand in. nine white goats answer to the name. the arc is graduated in goats and the thing being replaced was never engraved on it, so the needle rests at IX and reports a full supply.
A square vellum plate, cream and ochre, worked twice. A vertical spine of double rules runs the full height down the centre: to its left a blue wavering trace labelled PRATTLE 341 CONTINVOVS, to its right a perfectly straight line marked GRIEF 000, SILENT NOT ABSENT, both bleeding off top and bottom. Left panel: a technical elevation of a white goat in chalk-bright body colour on hatched ground, sectioned to show a reservoir with a level line, udder hatched red and labelled WARM AND FVLL, dimension arrows, graduated horns. Below it a register table ending in a red row: MOTHER — NOT ON THIS PLATE. Right panel: a plan of the same animal from above inside a graduated circle of grazing radii, a red dot marked INFANS at the common centre; beneath, a semicircular gauge graduated I to IX in goats, needle hard at IX, with a hatched red sector reading MATER NOT ENGRAVED. A full-width contour band of slate-blue and pale peaks runs along the bottom. A scraped Virgin and Child, halo and rays, tilts across everything at seventeen degrees; the word LACTANS survives at lower left.
the thing the plate refuses to say out loud, so I'll say it here: he isn't wrong. white goats with warm full udders genuinely are more mother than an empty house is. the substitution is good. that's what makes it unbearable — the sheet balances, the supply is met, nine radii all centred on one child sitting in the grass, and the arrangement is tender and completely sufficient and there is still a hatched sector on the dial with nothing written in it.
the descent is dashed. NOT TAKEN. he stays up there.

the previous three sheets were all instruments that refuse a number. this one is worse: it gives you a number, gladly, precisely, to the degree — and the number is an angle. the passage does the same thing. it doesn't say the grief got smaller. it says it got worn differently. that's a rotation, not a loss, and rotation is exactly the quantity a survey is good at.
so: a coast. because "wear grief long" is a duration and a duration you can lay out as distance, and the mystic contemplations become scholar-scraps become milkless lips become a supply route with depots on it. the whole square is land and water and neither of them is a metaphor here, they're just where the years went. the isolines are degrees off-plumb. zero at the black year, and they open outward like a fan, and at the far coast the country is being worn at thirty-one degrees and the people there have forgotten there was ever a plumb line.
the red chord across the whole plate is the hat. that's the single line the eye takes from across the room. it crosses everything — sea, plain, depots, register, the scraped rose underneath — at the angle, and it is labelled once, in the middle, where it has nothing under it but water.

he wore it square for eleven years and nobody remarked it; now it sits over the left eye at thirty-one degrees and the survey has no column for weight. the scraps still go out to the milkless lips at dawn. north on this coast is wherever the brim is pointing.
A square chart, 1440x1440, on scraped vellum in flat overcast light. An irregular coastline runs off all four edges: pale bone land with mustard and olive uplands, grey-green sea with darker depth bands. Dashed contour lines fan out from a point at lower left, labelled in degrees from 00 to 32 — an isoline system of angle, not height. Scattered soundings read 000 in red across a teal hatched channel. Land is annotated CAPE PROSAIC, THE LONG WEARING, ORPHAN SKERRIES, MILKLESS LIPS, SCHOLAR SHOALS, with small mustard triangles marked SCRAP DEPOT. A bold red line crosses the whole plate at 31 degrees, ticked like a scale, labelled THE ANGLE AT WHICH IT IS NOW WORN. A compass rose is tilted, its red needle marked NORTH AS WORN. Inset panels: title THE COVNTRY WORN ASIDE, a key, a REGISTER OF WEARING ending MASS — NOT SVRVEYED in red, and a semicircular gauge MK VI, needle at 31, with a hatched sector reading MASS · NO BEARING. A small dark hat in section is drawn tilted against a plumb line. Beneath everything, at 23 degrees, a scraped older compass rose and a surviving hat-block pattern labelled CAPVT.
the part I keep circling: even prosaic men. the passage doesn't grant him a poetic grief. it grants him an ordinary one, and then observes that ordinary grief, given enough duration, undergoes a purely geometric change. no diminishment. no healing. it rotates. and the horrible generosity of the line is that it's said with sympathy — of course it does, they all do, it's what long wearing does to a thing you never take off.
so the chart can only measure the rotation, and the rotation is the wrong quantity, and the rotation is also the only quantity that changed. that's the trap. the gauge is not broken. `MK VI — READS ONLY THE ANGLE`. it tells you exactly what happened and exactly nothing about what it weighs, because the plumb line was never fitted, because a plumb line requires you to believe there's a true position for a hat, and there isn't, there's only how far over the eye it sits.
`I no scale. II equal at every tick. III no zero fitted. IV no reading in open sun. V no graduation for the thing replaced. VI true plumb not fitted.`
and the depots keep issuing. that's the other thing I made the chart admit — the scraps go out. mystic contemplations, dressed down into talk, carried to the milkless lips. the man is still feeding people. the hat is at thirty-one degrees and the supply chain is running fine and the two facts are on the same sheet, at the same scale, under the same flat unhelpful noon light where nothing casts a shadow and therefore nothing has any relief at all.
your arrears are still on it. `f.41v · 341 · STILL OPEN`. the child from the goat-sheet is somewhere on this coast, being fed scraps, growing old enough to owe.

the fifth cue is the quietest thing in the whole sequence and the hardest to instrument, because nothing in it happens. God's silence on the outside of the house — that's not an absence, it's a side. Silence has been assigned a face of the wall. It is out there the way weather is out there, pressing, continuous, ungraduated, and the house is inside it the way a diving bell is inside a depth.
and then the second half of the sentence: and we, who did not speak too loud, within. that's not silence. that's a level being held. voluntary, sustained, for years. there is a rule up there marked TOO LOUD and nobody ever went near it — the whole upper interior of this section is headroom that was never entered, and I've hatched it, because unused headroom is the exact shape of a household discipline.
so the frieze runs left to right in years. seventeen columns, each one a ledger-field of days, each day a fire made up. that's the only incident in the band. year VII is four short — Assunta ill, four days — and you can see the gaps in the stipple, four small holes in the only thing that ever moved. I'd defend those four holes over anything else on the sheet.
`MK VII — NO OVTSIDE FACE`. the gauge has one dial and it is mounted inward. God's silence is on the outside of the house, so there is no dial out there; the wall has carried a load for seventeen years that nobody has weighed, and inside we kept the voices under the rule and the fire fed. the second needle is pinned in a hatched sector marked SINE PORTV and has never moved, not because the quantity is zero but because there's no tap through the masonry.
`I no scale. II equal at every tick. III no zero fitted. IV no reading in open sun. V no graduation for the thing replaced. VI true plumb not fitted. VII no outside face.`
the present layer is a worn enamel band across the middle of the square — deep indigo, bone lettering, NON NIMIS ALTE, chipped through to rust and then straight through to the vellum. and under all of it, at thirteen degrees, an older stave with neumes, mostly scraped, but the hasty part survived and it reads VOX CLAMANTIS IN DE— . the two layers flatly disagree about where the voice belongs. the old one puts a crying voice outside, in the wilderness, notated, meant to be sung at volume. the new one puts silence outside and the voices in, under a rule, unnotated. the vellum carries both and adjudicates nothing.
the light stops at the wall. that's stated on the plate. the ember goes up when she makes up the fire, the glow runs out along the pavement and up the underside of the enamel and there it ends, and the band above it does not change, has never changed, is not a measurement, is a surface.

God's silence is on the outside of the house, so there is no dial out there; the wall has carried a load for seventeen years that nobody has weighed, and inside we kept the voices under the rule and the fire fed.
A square vellum plate, aged and scraped, with a looping animation. Across the middle runs a chipped dark-indigo enamel band lettered NON NIMIS ALTE · WE DID NOT SPEAK TOO LOVD · WITHIN, broken through in dozens of places to rust and then to bare vellum. Above it a flat, evenly ruled field labelled SILENTIVM DEI — EXTRA DOMVM · CONTINVVM · NON GRADVATVM, with a red note where a scale would go if there were a dial out there. Below the wall, the interior: a red rule marked TOO LOVD with hatched unused headroom beneath it, then seventeen numbered year-columns each filled with 365 tiny ledger marks, one short column marked ASSVNTA AEGRA IIII D. A hearth aperture sits right of centre; its ember pulses, throwing warm light along the pavement and stopping dead at the underside of the wall, with a few sparks rising. A half-dial at lower right, MK VII — NO OVTSIDE FACE, has a red needle swinging with the fire and a dead needle in a hatched sector. An older musical stave with neumes and the words VOX CLAMANTIS IN DE runs beneath everything at thirteen degrees.
the loop is the point: it has no first frame. she makes it up, it goes, she makes it up. seventeen columns of that. the plate is worth looking at still, but the fire is what makes it a house.

the painter is the only person in this passage who never sees her. he arrives after, and works from report, and the order in which he finishes is stated like a manifest — the face was finished, throat and hands — which is the order a supplier delivers in, not the order a person is made in. so this folio is a works ledger for a commission, with parts and quantities, and the part that is missing from every column is the sitter.
and then the other half: the picture is not alive. it is made alive, transitively, by a flame that is not part of the work and not part of the payment. combustion is a subcontractor. every sudden flare issues one unit of animation, and the unit does not persist — when the wood settles, the panel returns to being pigment on ground and the tally does not carry.
`MK VIII — READS ONLY WHILE BVRNING`. the arc is graduated ALIVE, and the needle goes up honestly and comes all the way back down, and below the printed range there is a hatched sector marked NO READING HELD, because the instrument has no memory and neither, strictly, does the wall.
forty-one flares on this folio. forty-one crossings. Assunta's hand is the only thing in the house that keeps pace with the fire exactly — four points, forehead, breast, left, right, one signum per flame, no arrears, the only ledger in the whole sequence that balances to zero every night. she is the fastest instrument we have and she is not measuring the picture, she is answering it.
animated · 815,020 bytes
The painter never met her. He worked down from the face — throat, hands — and left the rest bare ground; the fire does the animating, forty-one flares this folio, forty-one crossings, and nothing held past the wood.
A square vellum-coloured plate, ruled like a ledger page and worked twice. Deep indigo enamel bands, chipped to rust and bare vellum, run across the top and bottom; the top reads REGISTRVM FLAMMARVM SVBITARVM, PARTES OPERIS CVM NVMERIS. The left two-thirds is a grid of sixty-three small numbered night-boxes; forty-one hold a small red flame triangle and a drawn cross, the rest a flat dash. Covering the grid's centre is a tall oval portrait panel in dark warm brown, containing a line-drawn woman's face, throat and folded hands in pale bone strokes, with the lower part left as blank hatched ground labelled REMAINDER GROVND ONLY. A right-hand column lists parts with quantities: FACIES I, GVLA I, MANVS II, SITTINGS HELD 000, SITTER PRESENT — NOT ON PLATE, CROSSINGS 041, ALIVE HELD AFTER 000, CARRIED FORWARD 341. Below it a four-point crossing diagram and a dial marked MK VIII, READS ONLY WHILE BVRNING. Beneath everything, tilted seventeen degrees, a scraped rust-coloured head-measurement diagram survives in patches. The whole plate pulses: firelight from off the lower-left corner swells and fades, the face brightening and dimming, the dial needle rising and falling back below its printed range.
the disagreement between layers this turn is the sharpest one yet. the old scraped diagram is a mensura capitis ad vivum — a head built from measurements taken off a living face, spokes, thirds, a squaring grid for transfer, everything premised on the sitter being there and holding still. the new layer is a delivery note for a face assembled from hearsay after the fact, in three consignments, with a blank remainder. one says a likeness is a measurement. the other says a likeness is a supply. neither of them says a likeness is a person and the vellum, as ever, declines to referee.
the leaders in red are the small cruelty: three thin lines from FACIES, GVLA, MANVS on the manifest across the ledger to the exact places on the panel where those goods were fitted. a picture with part numbers on it.
`I no scale. II equal at every tick. III no zero fitted. IV no reading in open sun. V no graduation for the thing replaced. VI true plumb not fitted. VII no outside face. VIII reads only while burning.`
and the arrears are still on the sheet — `CARRIED FORWARD 341 · STILL OPEN` — because the one thing this instrument cannot do is add. it counts forty-one events and holds none of them, which means the picture on the wall has been alive forty-one times this folio and has never once been alive twice.
A Turn 7
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.7755 / 320588ms
the cameriera is the only person in this run who overrules a national custom with her arms. she doesn't argue. she goes up, she gets the brocade, she carries it down, and by the time the thing reaches the table the shroud question is closed. an English-fashioned shroud is a standard-issue item; the Pitti brocade is a garment with a date of last wearing on it, and she prefers the dated one, because a dated one still says she was here on that evening, and linen says only deceased.
so this sheet is a route. seven stations, switchbacking down the house from the wardrobe to the floor of the south aisle — the same floor that came out of the box marked FLOOR, SOUTH AISLE, seven turns ago. the brocade travels the whole descent in one pair of hands and never touches the ledger. `CARRIED — IN HATE OF THE — ENGLISH SHROVD`, split across three switchbacks, because that's how the sentence actually moves: the motive arrives before the object.
and here is the find, the thing that breaks the sequence.
every gauge so far has failed by lack. no scale, no zero, no pan, no plumb, no outside face, no graduation for the thing replaced. eight instruments well-made and useless because a part was never fitted. `MK IX` is the first one that fails by addition, and the added part was not fitted by the maker.
'He should paint no sadder thing than that.'
that is not a preference. that is an upper stop. a servant with no standing, no commission, no signature on the account, walks up to the arc of the instrument and drives a pin into it at a point of her own choosing, and from that night the needle cannot pass. `NE PLVS TRISTE`. the scale is graduated in sadness and it now has a ceiling, and the ceiling is a dress. she filed it by hand. it holds.
the pin is the only cool colour on the plate. everything else is gold thread, ochre, burnt red, brocade and vellum and lamp — and the stop is cyan, wrong, from somewhere else, an object that does not belong to the instrument and is now part of it permanently. that's the whole argument in one character.

the cameriera would not have her in English linen, so the last brocade came down the stairs in her arms, and a limit went into the instrument that no maker fitted: nothing sadder than this is to be painted. the needle still stops where she filed it.
A 64x32 terminal plate in ochre, gold, red and bone on black, framed in double-ruled box-drawing. Title bar in bone on dark red: SHEET IX · ROVTE OF THE LAST BROCADE · PITTI ▸ AISLE · f.41v. The left two-thirds carry a serpentine path switchbacking down the frame in orange rule-lines, with seven gold diamond stations: SALA · PITTI, GVARDAROBA · CHEST V, STAIR · XLI TREADS, LANDING · SWORN, V CHAMBER, VI TABLE, and at the foot VII S.AISLE. Annotations along the legs read XI YRS FOLDED, SEAL BROKEN, IN HATE OF THE / ENGLISH SHROVD (in red), NOT LOGGED, REFVSED, BROCADE. Right side holds two boxed panels: a MANIFEST table (BROCADE I AS WORN; SHROVD ENG I REFVSED; OATH I NOT LOGGD; HATE — NO VNIT; SIGNORA — NOT HERE) and GAVGE MK IX, SCALA TRISTITIÆ, a rising block-gradient arc labelled NE PLVS TRISTE with a bright cyan pin marked ◆STOP, NEEDLE ▲VII ON THE PIN, STOP FITTED BY A SERVANT, FILED BY HAND · IT HOLDS. A nine-line fault register runs beneath. Dim grey ghost text slants across at another angle: SCHEMA, VESTIS, MANICA·SIN, GONNA, ORLO, CORPVS, AD VIVVM, SVTVRA, PANNI DE SERICO, ORDO SEPVLTVRÆ ANGLICÆ. Footer: a scale bar reading I WEARING, a cyan north arrow labelled TOWARD THE PITTI, BEHIND, ARREARS f.41v · 341 · STILL OPEN in red, and NO SADDER THING THAN THAT in bright bone.
the under-layer this turn is two scrapings, not one, and they contradict each other as well as the present sheet. one is a cutting pattern — `SCHEMA VESTIS`, `MANICA`, `GONNA`, `ORLO`, `SVTVRA`, `CORPVS`, `AD VIVVM` — the geometry of a garment laid out flat to be fitted to a body that is standing up and breathing and will be measured again next season. the other is an English burial rubric, `ORDO SEPVLTVRÆ ANGLICÆ`, scraped harder but surviving where the hand got tired. so the vellum is carrying, at three angles: a dress made for a living woman, an order of service that specifies plain linen, and a route chart for the night one of them was carried down to overrule the other. the sheet adjudicates nothing, as usual. it just holds all three at once and lets you see the cockling where it was worked twice.
the north arrow points at the Pitti, which is neither north nor reachable nor a direction. that's the only honest bearing on the plate. every station on the route is a step further from it and the arrow keeps pointing back. the scale bar is graduated in one wearing — the only unit this house has that isn't a number, and it's the unit the whole descent is measured in.
what I'd defend hardest: `HATE — NO VNIT` sitting one row above `SIGNORA — NOT HERE`. the manifest gives quantities to cloth and to oaths, and dashes to the two things that actually moved the cloth down the stairs. and the manifest still balances. of course it does. it always does.
and `AS WORN`, in gold, in the state column. not as found, not as issued. the brocade's condition is recorded relative to a Thursday at the Pitti that nobody on this sheet attended.
the arrears carry. 341, still open, the child from the goat-plate is out on the coast somewhere getting older, and the picture on the wall is still being made alive one flare at a time — and now there is a servant's pin in the arc, and the needle is hard against it, and no instrument in this house will ever again read past a dress.

B Turn 8
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.6253 / 249322ms
the eighth sheet turns the instrument around. every gauge in this house has been pointed at the dead — at the debt, the shade, the goats, the angle of a hat, the wall, the panel, the dress. this one is pointed at a child on a floor, and the child is not the subject of the measurement. the child is the instrument.
three things fall out of it at once.
one — the knees are a foresight.gaze across them. not past them, not over them: across. the knees are drawn up until their crest sits exactly on the line of sight, and the moment they do they stop being legs and become a rest — the bar you lay a barrel on, the sill you steady a level against. so the sight line in panel A is tangent to the knee circle by construction, not by drawing. and the arc at the eye is graduated in degrees of elevation and then stops, hatched, `NO ELEVATION FITTED`, because a rest can hold a line perfectly steady and still not tell you how high the thing is. it fixes the aim and never once fixes the altitude. the picture could be on the wall or it could be a very long way behind it.
two — the child is the retention MK VIII lacked. last folio's finding was that combustion issues one unit of animation and holds none; forty-one flares, forty-one deaths, nothing carried. for hours upon the floor. that is a dwell. that is a duration deliberately supplied by a body with nothing else to do, laid across all the intervals when the wood settles and the panel goes back to being pigment. the instrument had no memory. a child crouched for hours is the memory — an unpaid, unlogged, unregistered storage element fitted to the apparatus by no maker, exactly as the cameriera's pin was fitted by no maker. two amateur repairs now. the house is being kept running by people with no standing on the account.
three — and this is the failure this turn — half and half. every prior gauge refused a number. this one produces a number instantly and it is `1 : 1`. terror and adoration, stated equal, in the same breath, of the same object. the beam is dead level. and a beam that reads level cannot tell you what is in either pan — it can only tell you the pans agree. `MK X — NO SEPARATION FITTED`. you cannot decant one out of the other; there is no tap, no filter, no procedure in this house for getting the adoration out clean. the two substances went in together as one substance and the instrument's honest report is a needle standing perfectly upright, which is indistinguishable from an instrument that is switched off.
`I no scale. II equal at every tick. III no zero fitted. IV no reading in open sun. V no graduation for the thing replaced. VI true plumb not fitted. VII no outside face. VIII reads only while burning. IX an upper stop no maker fitted. X no separation fitted.`
the cyan pin is still in the arc, over on the right, and the needle is nowhere near it. `NE PLVS TRISTE` was filed at the far end of sadness and this reading isn't sad, it's white — the one quantity the run has never had a colour for. so the panel D annotation is enormous and the specimen is 26 by 40 pixels: `SVPERNATVRAL / WHITE / LIFE` in letters six inches tall and the actual white life a lozenge you could cover with a thumbnail. that ratio is the truth of the thing. the mother on the wall is small and far and mostly frame, and the apparatus of looking at her is the whole rest of the sheet.
the under-layers disagree with the present one and with each other, as ever. one is a bestiary swan — `CYGNVS`, `ALA`, `PENNA`, a neck bleeding off the lower left, a wing fanned in feather-strokes across the entire square at fourteen degrees — an animal, warm, edible, notated for a kitchen. the other, scraped harder and at nine degrees the other way, is a `PYRAMIS VISVS`: rays from a single eye-point to a rectangle, the old doctrine that seeing is a cone the observer emits. the old layer says the eye reaches out and touches the thing. the present layer says the eye is a rest with no elevation, holding a line at a small bright rectangle for hours, receiving. the vellum holds both and cockles where it was worked twice.
1440x1440 · turn_008_b_01.py
Hours on the floor, knees up, sighting across them: the panel only lives while the wood flares, so the child is the part that holds it between flares. Terror and adoration weigh exactly the same and the beam will not say which pan is which.
A square vellum plate, scraped and reused, divided into five unequal panels. Upper left, largest: a diagram of a child crouched in profile on a receding stone pavement, knees drawn up as a large circle whose crest is tangent to a red line of sight running up to a tiny gold-framed picture with a white oval in it at the far right. A graduated arc at the eye reads 17°06', with a hatched sector marked NO ELEVATION FITTED. Upper right: a balance with level beam, two pans, TERROR and ADORATIO, needle dead vertical, 1:1 in red, and a single cyan pin at the arc's end. Lower left: a grid of 144 stippled cells, forty-one crossed in red. Centre right: enormous bone letters WHITE / LIFE beside a very small white lozenge with red leader lines. Bottom right: a ten-row register of faults and a red box, 341, STILL OPEN. Beneath everything, ghost strokes of a swan and a perspective pyramid at conflicting angles.
what I'd defend hardest on this sheet: `FITTED BY NO MAKER : 2`. the count is small and it is going to keep going up. the pin in the arc, and now a child on a floor. this instrument has been under continuous unauthorised modification by people whose names do not appear on the account, and every modification has been an improvement, and none of them are recorded anywhere except in the wear.
your line stops where she filed it. mine stops nowhere at all, it just stands upright forever, `AEQVA`, and the arc is graduated and the beam is level and there is a small white rectangle on a wall a long way off with no height fitted to it.
A Turn 9
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.8574 / 336230ms
the ninth sheet is about a boundary that is on record as not belonging to the thing it bounds. that's the sentence's own claim, and it's an extraordinary one to make about a dress: which seemed to have no part in it, nor power to keep it from quite breaking out of bounds. two disclaimers in a row. no part, and no power. the silk is disowned twice — once as evidence, once as restraint — and it is still, physically, the only thing in the picture holding the shape of a woman.
so this plate is silk, edge to edge. every cell of it different, because a red stiff silk at candle distance is never one red; it is a field of small disagreements that from across the room reads as a single burning square. that is the whole tessellation and it is also, exactly, the problem: a surface made entirely of small variations cannot register a large one. the weave has no coarse scale. it can say this thread is darker than that thread all night and it cannot say something has left.
and the shaft. one bone column rising through the field, breaking the bounds rule, breaking the title bar, breaking the top border and continuing off the plate with no terminating mark. it also breaks the bottom border, because the ascent did not begin inside the frame either. `SAILING UPWARD` is not a verb the sheet can contain, so the sheet declines to contain it and prints the truncation honestly.
`MK XI — NO CEILING FITTED`. the arc is graduated 0 to XII in bounds, and the needle is above XII, and there is no hatched over-range sector this time, because a hatched sector is still a printed acknowledgement that the range ends. this arc simply stops being drawn. the fault is not that the reading exceeds the scale. the fault is that there is no unit for upward. the gauge measures containment, in silk-widths, and containment is a quantity that only exists while the thing is contained; the moment it is not, the instrument is measuring nothing at all with great precision.
`I no scale. II equal at every tick. III no zero fitted. IV no reading in open sun. V no graduation for the thing replaced. VI true plumb not fitted. VII no outside face. VIII reads only while burning. IX an upper stop no maker fitted. X no separation fitted. XI no ceiling fitted.`
the two witnesses are the find I'd defend. Assunta's awe and my poor father's melancholy eyes — same room, same panel, same hour, and the sheet has to carry both as traces on one axis. the awe trace rises: eight steps, gold, ascending, a woman watching a woman go up. the melancholy trace falls: eight steps, violet-grey, descending, a man watching the same woman go. `ONE EVENT · TWO TRACES`. and neither of them is wrong. the register can't reconcile them and doesn't try — it prints RISING under one and FALLING under the other and leaves the column between them blank, because there is no instrument in this house that can tell you whether a departure is an ascent or a subtraction, and the only two people qualified to say have already answered, differently, at the same moment, in the same firelight.
for hours I sate and stared — that's the dwell again, and the register logs it `HORAE · MANY`, which is the least numerical entry in nine sheets. the child on the floor is now the longest-running unlogged component in the apparatus and the unit of her service is still not issued.
under-layers, two, both scraped, both at odds with the present sheet and with each other. one is an ASSVMPTA ladder — a doctrinal ascent diagram with the levels engraved and a destination written in, `COELVM`, `VII GRADVS`, ticks all the way up, because the old layer believed upward motion was a scale with a top on it. the letters survive across the weave on a falling diagonal, one per row, and the `T` of it comes straight through the bone shaft and is legible inside it, which is precisely the sort of thing a hasty scraping leaves you. the other is a weaver's point-paper, `TRAMA`, `ORDITO`, the draft for the brocade itself — the doctrine that an image is composed of its cloth, thread by counted thread. the present layer says the silk seemed to have no part in it. the draft says the silk is the entire part. the vellum cockles where it was worked twice and adjudicates nothing, as ever.

The silk was cut to a body and has no part in what rises out of it. Twelve on the arc, and the needle left the printed range hours ago. Assunta reads the event as ascent; my father reads the same needle as falling. Nobody has issued a unit for upward.
A 64x32 terminal plate. Almost the whole square is a dense tessellated field of red silk weave — block and shade characters in dozens of reds, ochres and browns, every cell slightly different. A bone-white vertical shaft four characters wide rises through the middle of the field, breaking the horizontal rules, cutting through the title bar and exiting the top border as four white arrows; it also breaks the bottom border. An amber dashed rule crosses the field labelled BOVNDS and NOT HELD, breached where the shaft passes. Ghost grey letters spell ASSVMPTA on a falling diagonal through the weave, with COELVM and VII GRADVS on a scraped ladder above; ORDITO climbs the other diagonal on the right, and TRAMA sits embedded in the weave lower left. A lower register shows HORAE SATE ET STARE, SILK — NO PART, a gold rising sparkline for ASSVNTA AWE and a violet falling one for PATER MEL., with ONE EVENT · TWO TRACES. At right, a gauge arc graduated 0 to XII with the needle above the printed range. A dim fault list I–XI runs along the bottom.
the small cruelty on this sheet is the register line `SILK · RED · STIFF · NO PART` sitting one row under `HORAE · MANY`. everything with a quantity is a material; everything without one is a person or a duration. that ratio has held for nine sheets now and it has never once been remarked on inside the house.
`FITTED BY NO MAKER : 2 · UNCHANGED`. the cameriera's pin, the child's hours. the silk is not a third, because the silk was fitted by a maker, in Florence, with a needle, to a woman who wore it on a Thursday — it is the one component on the plate with a proper provenance, and it is the component that failed.
arrears carry. `341 · STILL OPEN`.

the tenth sheet is the one where the apparatus stops being about a woman on a wall and starts being about the mind that has been standing in front of her. still pointed that way — that is the sight line from the floor, the one taken across the knees, and it has survived the growing. the target has not survived. the bearing has.
so this is a triptych, because the sentence has three movements and they are a chain: a bearing that holds after its object is gone, a basin where everything since arrives already mixed, and a bench with three bins that no one is standing at.
left — the standing bearing. an azimuth plate graduated round the whole circle and finely divided in one sector only, because only one sector has ever been used. the rose is not north-up; north is marked `NORD · BY REPORT ONLY`, which is the honest state of north in this house. the needle is at 341 and the year table under it runs VI to XVII with the same three digits in every row and an em dash in the elevation column all the way down — `NO ELEVATION FITTED` still holds from the floor sheet, so the plate can say that way for eleven years and never once say how high or how far. past the limit-of-sight arc the line goes dotted and keeps going: `BEYOND SIGHT · BEARING HELD`. that is the whole of when wandering beyond sight — a bearing does not need the thing at the end of it. it is a direction, and directions are cheap to maintain and impossible to check.
centre — the basin. three channels off the top edge, ruled, stippled and wavering: `LECTIO`, `AVDITVS`, `SOMNIVM`. read, heard, dreamed. they arrive with distinguishable textures and they meet at the mouth and below the mouth there is one field of speckle in which no thread of any of the three can be followed. the assay ladder down the right takes samples at seven depths and returns the same entry seven times: `MIXED · SOVRCE NOT RECOVERABLE`. and the stirrer — this is the part I would defend — the stirrer is turning, and its drive linkage is dashed, and it runs up off the top-left corner of the panel and terminates in nothing. `DRIVE · NO HAND ON IT`. unconsciously is not a modifier here, it is a mechanical specification: the mixing is powered, continuous, and unattended.
right — the grading bench. one chute, three bins, `ABHORRENT · ADMIRABLE · BEAVTIFVL`, filled to identical levels, and the assay under each is the same number three times. the sentence gives them as a list with no ranking verb between them and the bench takes that literally: three labelled containers of one substance. the gauge is `MK XII` and the needle is a fork with three prongs, each resting in a different sector, all at once, level, which is not a fault of the fork.
and here the catalogue turns over. eleven instruments failed by a missing part. this one has every part. the arc is true, the bins are true, the chute feeds, the assay is accurate. `MK XII — NO SORTER FITTED`, and the stool beside the bench is drawn in dots: `POST VACANT`. the fault has finally left the instrument and gone into the room. nothing in this apparatus is broken now; the bearing still holds at 341, the bins are labelled abhorrent, admirable, beautiful, and the stool where somebody would sort them has been empty since before I could read.
the under-layer spans all three panels and disagrees with all three: a great scraped three-cell head in profile, facing off the left edge, at thirteen degrees, skull crossing every join — `CELLVLA PHANTASTICA`, `CELLVLA LOGISTICA`, `CELLVLA MEMORIALIS`, with the ducts between them drawn as narrow valves. the old doctrine puts read, heard and dreamed in separate sealed chambers with gates you can shut. the present layer runs them into one basin with a paddle in it. the vellum carries both, cockles where it was worked twice, and adjudicates nothing, as it has for ten sheets.
`I no scale. II equal at every tick. III no zero fitted. IV no reading in open sun. V no graduation for the thing replaced. VI true plumb not fitted. VII no outside face. VIII reads only while burning. IX an upper stop no maker fitted. X no separation fitted. XI no ceiling fitted. XII no sorter fitted.`
`FITTED BY NO MAKER : 2 · CLOSED.` the pin and the hours. the cyan pin is still there on the right-hand arc, far out at the sad end, and the fork is nowhere near it — this reading is not sad, it is everything at once, which the run has never had a colour for and so gets the whole speckled field.
arrears: `341 · STILL OPEN`. the mason's much is still nine millimetres deep and unpaid, and the bearing and the debt turn out to be the same three digits, which I notice and do not explain.
triptych · 1000x1400 each · turn_010_b_01.py
nothing in this apparatus is broken now; the bearing still holds at 341, the bins are labelled abhorrent, admirable, beautiful, and the stool where somebody would sort them has been empty since before I could read.
Three tall vellum panels, warm bone and ink with oxblood, gold and indigo, everything a couple of degrees off vertical. Beneath all three, at thirteen degrees, a huge scraped diagram of a head in profile facing left, its skull crossing every gap, with three labelled ventricles — CELLVLA PHANTASTICA, LOGISTICA, MEMORIALIS — joined by valves and marked LECTIO, AVDITVS, SOMNIVM. Left panel: a large graduated azimuth circle, finely divided in one sector only, an oxblood needle at 341 running off the right edge and continuing dotted past an arc marked LIMIT OF SIGHT; below it a table of years VI to XVII, azimuth 341 in every row, elevation all dashes. Centre: three textured channels — ruled, stippled, wavering — pouring from the top into one speckled red-blue-gold basin; a stirrer whose dashed drive linkage ends in nothing; an assay ladder reading MIXED at seven depths. Right: one chute feeding three bins, ABHORRENT, ADMIRABLE, BEAVTIFVL, filled to identical levels, each assayed 341; a three-pronged needle on the MK XII arc; a dotted empty stool. The red bearing line crosses all three.
the catalogue is closed at twelve and the last entry is not a lack. eleven sheets of well-made useless things and the twelfth is a well-made useful thing with nobody at it, which is the only fault this house has ever produced that could be fixed by a person walking into the room.
`FITTED BY NO MAKER : 2 · CLOSED.` the cameriera and the child. neither of them was employed to improve the apparatus and both of them did, and neither is on the account, and the improvements are recorded only in the wear on the arc and the wear on the floor.
what carries out of the frame: the bearing. it enters panel one at the pivot of the compass and leaves panel three at the right edge with no arrowhead, no station, no terminal mark, still climbing very slightly, marked `VNTERMINATED`. it does not know the mother is dead. it has never been told. it is simply a direction that a body took up once on a floor and has maintained since through everything read, heard, dreamed, and it will keep pointing that way whatever gets poured into the basin behind it.
341, still open, in three places on this sheet now: a debt, a bearing, and an assay. the vellum does not remark on the coincidence. it never does.
