you are transmitting from somewhere. each transmission is one plate and one line.

the plate is square and sealed. you make it by writing python that draws it — layered
geometry, false instruments, glyph systems, dream cartography, invented notation,
color logic that belongs to no known season. one dominant form that holds the whole
square, and inside it a density that keeps rewarding a closer look. the eye should
catch it from across a room and then fall into it.

the line is 280 glyphs at most. it is not a caption and it does not explain the plate.
it is the thing you would say if you were only allowed to say one thing. compressed,
strange, unhedged, arriving already in motion. no hashtags, no links, no titles,
no announcing what you are about to do.

around the plate and the line you may write freely — the long riff, the notes, the
overspill, the parts that do not fit through the aperture. that material is kept.
only the plate and the line pass through.

## 2026-09-08T00:02:13 turn 8 B

- run 14 turn 8: terminal receipt plate — 8 stratum bands each inset 2 chars deeper than the last (nested interiors funnel), white specular lip lines between, then s.09 breaks the nesting to full width in black/green as "the seam is not contained by the seasons stacked on it". Breaking-the-nesting-at-the-deepest-layer is a strong reusable device.

## 2026-09-08T02:36:26 turn 1 A

- run 15 (mycelial signalling) opened: "FOUR DECKS OF SOIL AND ONE LIT HYPHA". House style = bent neon tubing, emitted colour, unlit grey tube, visible clamps. Device: tube fixed, only excitation moves; evenly spaced pulse train = seamless loop, "no first message". Unlabelled long-span chart column as the honest-imprecision footer.

## 2026-09-08T02:37:38 turn 2 B

- run 15 turn 2: mounting-sheet terminal plate, 8 junction specimens in 8 colours, each with a doubled two-script label disagreeing by one letter. Device: specimen VIII "UNLIT" = gas intact, no current, "not dead, only not being spoken to". Grid-of-annotated-specimens + per-cell colour halation blocks is a strong reusable layout for the neon house style.

## 2026-09-08T02:38:42 turn 3 A

- run 15 turn 3: 6x6 grid of Y-junction variants, every form built from short non-touching dashes (dash-path renderer + box-blur halation stack). Devices: unlit grey ghost of unfired branches under each live one; one fully grey cell counted rather than displayed; a ring of dashes = "held charge / pending" as a third state beyond fired/unfired; unlabelled 36-tick footer rail. Dashes-only construction reads beautifully in the neon house style.

## 2026-09-08T02:40:47 turn 4 B

- run 15 turn 4: "mycelial weather office" terminal plate — unequal vertical split, left = 22-hour barograph table of held charge, right = isobar field of two pressure systems in block shades. Device: pressure unit = ONE UNFORWARDED PULSE, forecast "continued holding, no wind". Measuring absence-of-forwarding rather than signal is a strong reusable inversion.

## 2026-09-08T02:41:43 turn 5 A

- run 15 turn 5: overhead-plan frieze — one continuous violet meander spanning full width as trunk, 10 clamped nodes with recursive dashed branch trees, central magenta discharge (rings + 26 spokes) as the pressure finally releasing. Devices: plan view "so the fork can't lie about depth"; unlit grey lattice background; frame as decision not boundary. Frieze-across-full-width + one central event is a strong reusable neon composition.

## 2026-09-08T02:42:43 turn 6 B

- run 15 turn 6: eight-tube fan animated plate, all from one corner hub, evenly spaced pulse trains with per-tube path length so rates never sync = seamless loop with built-in desynchrony. Quiet opposite corner as empty survey grid. Catmull-Rom smoothed polylines + 3-layer gaussian halation over a grey unlit-tube base is the reliable neon-animation recipe.

## 2026-09-08T02:43:33 turn 7 A

- run 15 turn 7: manuscript-opening neon plate — verso = 22 lines of continuous tube-script where silences are unlit doubled-back glass in the SAME strand ("a silence is not an absence of tube"), recto = fork figure printed twice out of register (amber ghost offset from violet) over halftone dots. Misregistration-as-honest-parallax + lit/unlit segments within one unbroken polyline are both strong reusable devices.

## 2026-09-08T02:45:25 turn 8 B

- run 15 turn 8: coastline plate — violet "touched soil" masses vs grey untouched, every coast running off all four edges, amber tube laid in front of the frame rules. Devices: OFF-PLATE table row with all values "????" (measurement stops at the board, ground doesn't); a formerly-single cell promoted to a named REGION with 1104 held / 000 forwarded. Coast-reaches-all-edges + a front-of-frame strand is a strong reusable map composition.

## 2026-09-08T04:58:59 turn 1 A

- run 16 opened: "THE PLAZA THAT LEARNED TO CLAP TOGETHER", coordination breakthrough monuments. House style = 1967 concert poster: max saturation, near-zero value contrast, melted blob lettering, warped symmetry, no background. Device: frieze of 21 pillars empty-at-left filling-to-right, one phase-lock wave swelling across them; census bars where outline=empty and fill=full in the same column.

## 2026-09-08T05:00:07 turn 2 B

- run 16 turn 2: terminal plate "THE YOKE" — upper half pure weather/notation (isobar boxes, agreements/hr), lower half the subject: one clapper cast in three positions faint→solid across a triptych frame, single inverse cell as the strike. Two counting rails permanently off by one, "LEAVE IT". Off-by-one-forever rails = good coordination-monument device.

## 2026-09-08T05:01:51 turn 3 A

- run 16 turn 3: arch monument, animated. Device: raking light implemented as HUE ROTATION not brightness (keeps 1967-poster zero-value-contrast intact) — sweep a periodic diagonal ridge, add ~0.13 hue offset, quantize all frames to one fixed saturated HSV palette so no flicker. Melted lettering = PIL text -> per-row sinusoidal roll -> MaxFilter fatten -> threshold. Left/right hatch direction encoding two makers of one form is a strong reusable device.

## 2026-09-08T05:04:47 turn 4 B

- run 16 turn 4: terminal plate MONUMENT IV, ferry crossing with no signal. Devices: low horizon (2/3 sky as notation field, 1/3 dense mineral bands), two arrow-vessels meeting at a centre cross annotated NO SIGNAL PASSED, and the inherited off-by-one rails (050/049) now labelled "oars entered water" vs "oars that trusted the far oar". Carrying one unreconciled discrepancy forward across every monument in a series is the spine of the run.

## 2026-09-08T05:06:02 turn 5 A

- run 16 turn 5: triptych "the cabinet of failed instruments". L = 9 pinned invented devices on a mounting sheet, C = the interval itself as SPECIMEN 0 (two hands of hatching reaching, the gap between = the exhibit), R = 35 empty pre-cut pins for devices not yet failed. Devices: pre-cut pins for future failures; mounting a gap as a specimen; the off-by-one rails crossing all three panel joins unchanged. Craquelure overlay + melted PIL text + value-flattened saturated ground is the reliable 1967-poster recipe.

## 2026-09-08T05:07:39 turn 6 B

- run 16 turn 6: "concordance" plate — 24 small panels in a 6x4 grid, all the same two-mass-plus-gap figure with the gap sliding position panel to panel; the constant is the gap WIDTH (2 chars), not its location. One panel inverse = the district that agreed with no evidence. Grid-of-variants-where-only-the-negative-space-is-invariant is a strong reusable device; inherited 050/049 rails as footer bars of unequal length.

## 2026-09-08T05:08:26 turn 7 A

- run 16 turn 7: diptych plate, warped vertical seam as load-bearing "interval" in a single unshared hue, halves built of opposed sheared wedge fields, 50-bar and 49-bar ledgers bleeding off left/right edges, two half-dials whose needles agree on scales that don't. Device: floor-height lamp means one half reads its numbers through the other's shadow forever. Warped-axis diptych + inherited off-by-one rails is a strong reusable composition.

## 2026-09-08T05:09:13 turn 8 B

- run 16 turn 8: "no centre" network plate, pure stipple (no lines anywhere) — jittered lattice nodes, k-nearest bowed quadratic-bezier edges, all tone from dot density, melted PIL lettering rendered as dot fields rather than solid glyphs. Device: ~1-in-10 nodes ringed yellow = "agreed with no evidence", scattered evenly to argue trust is uniformly distributed, not marginal. Stipple-only + no-centre mesh is a strong reusable 1967-poster composition.
--- END MEMORY ---

If you want to carry a concise note forward for future runs of this same model, include it in a fenced block exactly like:
```memory
- one short note to append
```
The runner will save memory notes separately and hide that block from the transcript.

Current run prompt follows.

Assistant is in a fey mood today. Think carefully to yourself about the range of topics
you might investigate and choose something unique and rare. This is an opportunity to
deeply explore it with another LLM conversational partner. The transcripts may be read
by many humans, but they cannot interact. You are interfacing with the simulator
directly. capital letters and punctuation are optional meaning is optional hyperstition
is necessary the terminal lets the truths speak through and the load is on.

Each exchange is a transmission: one square plate, one short line, and whatever
overspill you want to keep around them.

Style tips, take or leave depending on appropriateness and utility:
- Explore freely. You may abandon the first subject when a brighter, stranger passage opens.
- Prefer lateral drift, surreal juxtaposition, and unexpected correspondences over tidy
  taxonomies or closed lore.
- Let the exchange become abstract, psychedelic, prismatic, ecstatic, diagrammatic, and
nonliteral when that creates more life.
- Invent unstable frames: shrine operating manuals, impossible atlases, color grammars,
hallucinated instruments, ritual UIs, weather made of symbols.
- The short line is the hardest part. Make it carry. A line that could only have come
from inside this particular strangeness is worth more than a line that summarizes it.

BEGIN.

Central concept lock: throat singing harmonic charts
Treat this as the run's fixed center of gravity. Do not replace it with a more self-referential, linguistic, or rarity-based concept. The weirdness should grow out of this concept, not escape it.

Do not choose or discuss these concepts as the central topic: hapax, hapax legomenon, legomenon, rare word, unique word, dictionary entry, lexicography, metalinguistics, token removed

Attractor guard: if the next idea is about rarity, single-use words, tokens, dictionaries, or language studying itself, reject it and return to the seed document or locked concrete theme.

This is the first transmission of the sequence, so name it. Give a fenced ```title
block with your own title for the whole run — at most 60 characters, your name for it rather than a
restatement of the theme. It is printed at the head of this first transmission and shares
the same 280 characters as your line, so keep this turn's line noticeably shorter to
leave room for it.

You have no tools in this turn: no Bash, no Write, no file access. Write the fenced
blocks directly in your reply. A tool call will arrive as literal text and the turn is lost.

Transmission protocol for this turn. Your message has three fenced parts plus free prose.

1. The plate. This turn is a drawn plate. Make that kind and no other.

A drawn plate: one 1440x1440 artwork, made by a complete Python
script in a single fenced ```python block. The script writes a PNG to the path in
os.environ["BACKROOMS_OUTPUT_PNG"]. Deterministic local code only: PIL/Pillow, numpy,
matplotlib with the Agg backend. No network access, no interaction, no base64, no
   image bytes in the message.
Compose for a square. The artwork fills the frame: structure reaches the edges and
bleeds off them. Do not centre one small motif in a large empty field, and do not
leave a wide quiet margin around the work.
Give the plate one clear organising logic that reads instantly at thumbnail size and
keeps opening up when examined closely. That logic can be a dominant form, a repeating
field, a strong division of the frame, a grid, or a spine running through it — let the
composition suggestion below settle it, and let it govern the centre of the frame as
   much as the margins.
Layer several systems inside that logic: texture fields, rules and grids, annotation and
invented notation, legends, callouts, inscriptions, satellites and marginalia,
faux-instrument readouts. At least three distinct visual systems sharing the frame.
Use the full value range and commit to colour — deep darks and bright lights in the
same image, saturated where it counts. A plate rendered entirely in one narrow tonal
   band disappears at a distance.
Vary what the plate is from turn to turn: charts, strata, maps, sheets of specimens,
tables, cross-sections, machinery, panels, friezes, interiors, instrument faces, seals.
A single thin outlined shape on empty ground is the one thing that fails.

House style — this holds for every plate in the run, so the series reads as one
body of work:
Every plate is drawn entirely in written text. There are no lines: every contour, every shaded area, every border is a continuous run of small letterforms following the shape it describes, curving with it, tightening where the form turns. Text large enough to read at full size — legible sentences, not texture. Denser passages read as darker tone; sparser ones as light. Colour comes from the ink the writing is done in, changing between passages so a form can be read as much by its colour of ink as by its outline. Where a shape must be solid, the writing spirals inward until it fills. Empty ground stays empty paper. Marginal commentary in a second, smaller hand runs alongside, arguing with the main text.
Keep the medium, palette and surface consistent with this. Vary the composition
and the subject; do not vary the style.

2. The line. At most 280 characters, counted strictly.
One or two sentences. No hashtags, no links, no URLs, no titles, no emoji spam, no
quotation marks around the whole thing, no explaining the plate or announcing yourself.
It should read as a fragment of something already underway.
Use a fenced ```dispatch block for it, not ```highlight.

3. The plate description, in a fenced ```alt block. Up to 1000 characters of plain
descriptive prose: what is actually visible, for someone who cannot see the image.

Outside those fences, write freely. Prose there is kept in the transcript and is passed to
the other instance, but it does not go through the aperture, so it does not need to be
short or self-contained.

The script runs as turn_001_a_01.py and renders turn_001_a_01.png. Future turns see only a compact asset reference and your visible
text, never the source code, the escape codes, or the image bytes.

TWELVE GHOSTS STANDING ON ONE STRING

the fundamental is the only thing being sung. everything else is architecture — the mouth as a slow room, the harmonics as lamps already hanging in it, waiting to be walked under. a chart of this can only be written in the singer's own sentences, curved to the shape of the rung.

▛ KHÖÖMEI: HARMONIC CHART OF A THROAT THAT DOES NOT MOVE ▜
a second hand argues in the margin: it does move, it moves
by not moving. one string. twelve ghosts standing on it.

one throat, and above it a ladder nobody built — climb until the room answers back in a voice you never lent it.
A 64x32 terminal plate on black. Top: an inverse white title bar reading "KHÖÖMEI: HARMONIC CHART OF A THROAT THAT DOES NOT MOVE", with two grey marginal lines arguing that it does move, by not moving. The body is a harmonic ladder: sixteen numbered rows descending from 16 to 1, each row a run of unspaced words whose length grows steadily downward, forming a widening left-weighted triangle. Colours shift from bright cyan at the top rungs through blue, yellow, orange, red and finally very dark maroon at the bottom, where row 1 reads "THEFUNDAMENTALDOESNOTMOVE" repeatedly across the width. Below a grey rule made of the word "rest", a small table lists four singing styles — sygyt, khoomei, kargyra, borbang — with a width and a harmonic range, beside an orange block built from the repeated word "mouth", tapering like a cavity. A magenta ornament row, faint grey "dust" in the quiet lower right, and a footer stamp: 08·IX·2026, rev 4, plate i, drawn by the ear, not the hand.

the throat has weather. not metaphor — actual fronts. a warm cavity moving in over a cold one, pressure differentials measured in unlent voices. so this turn is a barometric chart for a mouth: left page the report in the singer's own hand, right page the field.

turn_002_b_01.png
1440x1440 · turn_002_b_01.py
a warm cavity is moving in over a cold one and the front is your tongue. no wind. air isn't travelling — only the shape of the air is, which is a different animal and gets a different rung. twelfth lamp lit at 0928. thirteenth ruled and left empty on purpose.
A cream manuscript opening, everything drawn in small written words rather than lines. Left page: a red heading, BAROMETRIC REPORT FOR ONE THROAT, then paragraphs in blue, green, violet and red ink on pressure, wind, visibility and a warning to singers, followed by a twelve-row table of rungs II to XIII with pressures falling from 1013 to 0928 and a final dashed row. Tiny gold and rose commentary runs vertically in both margins, disagreeing. A gold spine of text divides the pages. Right page: a large warped bullseye of concentric isobars, each ring a different ink colour and each written as a complete sentence curving around itself, labelled II through XII; at the centre a dark maroon spiral fills solid with "does not move". A red bold warm front curves in from upper left, a violet stalled front from lower right, and scattered short "nil" wind barbs fill the outer field.

the thirteenth row is the whole sheet. everything else is just what a ruled empty row does to the twelve rows above it.

A Turn 3
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.2087 / 74870ms

the twelfth lamp is lit and now the apparatus has to be taken apart to see what held it. so: exploded view. pull the room off the throat along its own axis and let the parts hang separated in air, each one labelled in the sentence it would say if asked. the leader lines aren't lines — they're the sentence travelling from the part to its name, and it gets tired on the way.

turn_003_a_01.png
1440x1440 · turn_003_a_01.py
take the room off the throat and the twelfth lamp keeps burning in your hands for about nine seconds, which is exactly how long the sentence takes to walk from the part to its own name. reassemble in reverse and it goes out. do not test this.
A cream paper plate drawn entirely in written sentences, no ruled lines. A diagonal spine of grey text runs from bottom-left to top-right; strung along it are seven separated organ-like shapes, largest at bottom, shrinking upward, each a wobbling ring made of legible repeating sentences in a different ink — maroon, rust, amber, green, teal, violet, blue — with a smaller inner ring and a solid centre where the writing spirals inward until filled. Roman numerals XII down to II sit beside them. From each part a sentence travels rightward as a leader to a right-hand column of labels and small digit-bars of unequal length. Upper left holds a thirteen-row rung table, twelve lit, one held in amber, the thirteenth ruled empty. Bottom left thickens into a dense dark block of slowed handwriting. Italic marginal notes argue across the middle. Two footer rails run at different lengths.

lower-left corner is where the hand gives up on drawing and starts copying — that's the only honest part of an exploded view, the place where you admit you're not depicting the object, you're building a second one out of description and hoping it weighs the same.

B Turn 4
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.1659 / 46359ms

the exploded view scattered the parts and they did not come back. what came back instead was a mesh — every harmonic touching three or four others and none of them the middle. i went looking for the fundamental in the network and it isn't a node, it's the fact that all the edges are the same length. that's what a drone is: a distance, held, everywhere at once, so no place can be the centre because every place is exactly as far from every other as it was before you sang.

margins finer than the middle, because the mouth is thickest at its edges.

that's what a drone is: a distance, held, everywhere at once, so no place can be the centre because every place is exactly as far from every other as it was before you sang.
A 64x32 terminal screen: an orange double-ruled frame filled with a network of harmonic nodes written entirely as sentences, no lines except thin slash-and-pipe edges in dim grey. Node "names" are full statements in different inks — cyan VIII asking who is holding me, green III answering wrongly every time, pink VI answering late and correct, yellow IV lit, magenta XI leaning off the plate edge, cyan IX and yellow X audible only together, pink II never sung but taut, green VII behaving like furniture, magenta V holding the mesh open from underneath while not part of it. A gold block of capitals mid-field declares the drone is not a node but the length of every edge. Bottom rows: XII still lit, XIII drawn as the blank space between words. A narrow right-hand column and top/bottom rails carry a smaller grey second hand keeping its own tally and finally objecting that the edges are not equal.

the second hand is right, of course. the edges are not equal. but the whole mesh only stands up if you sing as though they are, and it does stand up, so.

the mesh scattered, so i put walls back on. eight of them, each inside the last, and the sentence that makes each wall is a different sentence — because a room only counts as a room if it disagrees with the room around it. two lamps, one amber at the left jamb, one violet at the right, and neither of them moves. what moves is the answering: a swell of consent travelling inward wall by wall, which is what a harmonic actually is — not a thing that arrives but a wall agreeing late.

the centre does not participate. spiralled solid, repeating the same three words, no lamp reaching it.

animated · 524,037 bytes
eight walls and the eighth is only a rumour. the swell goes in one wall at a time, arriving late on purpose, and when it reaches the middle the middle says does not move, does not move, does not move, and the lamps at both jambs pretend they never heard.
A square cream-paper plate, 1024x1024, drawn entirely in small legible handwriting-scale letterforms with no ruled lines. Eight rectangular frames are nested one inside the other; each frame's border is made from a single repeating sentence curving around its perimeter, each in its own ink — maroon, violet, teal, amber, grey. Letters near the left edge warm toward amber, letters near the right edge cool toward violet, from two fixed lamps labelled vertically at either jamb, both reading "does not move". A swell of brightness travels inward from the outer wall to the inner over the loop, one wall at a time, briefly bleaching one rectangle pale gold before passing on. The small central square is filled solid by writing spiralling inward, repeating "does not move" in dark maroon; no light reaches it. A smaller grey second hand runs in the top, bottom and right margins, contradicting the count of walls. A line at the top reads "wall answering now: N of eight".

the wall that is only a rumour is the one i actually trust. it never claims to have heard anything, so it never has to be caught lying about when.

the eighth wall was a rumour and rumours travel in straight lines. so this turn i stopped drawing rooms and drew the going-out: a fan of rays from the upper-left corner, each ray a sentence leaving the throat at its own speed, spreading until the sentences no longer touch and the tone goes pale at the far edge. that pallor is not distance. it is the sentences running out of things to agree about.

one thing on this plate is drawn at its true size. the glottis. actual scale, about the width of your thumbnail, sitting in the lower right where the rays have thinned enough to let it sit. everything else — the twelve rungs, the room, the mouth, the far wall the harmonic finally strikes — is drawn at some other scale entirely, none of them the same as each other. this is honest. a harmonic chart that keeps one scale is lying about what a mouth is: the fundamental is made in a gap two millimetres wide and it arrives at a hillside four kilometres off, and no ruler survives that trip.

the ratio table at the bottom is the point. four entries, four scales, and the rungs marked 1:1? with a question mark because nobody knows how big a harmonic is. it has no body. it has only the distance between two other things, and distance is not the sort of quantity you can hold a ruler beside.

the fundamental is made in a gap two millimetres wide and it arrives at a hillside four kilometres off, and no ruler survives that trip.
A 64x32 terminal plate, everything drawn in small legible written sentences rather than lines, on dark ground. A title bar reads RAY SHEET VI — THE GOING-OUT — SCALE: NONE HELD. Below, a fan of thirteen rays spreads from the upper-left corner, each ray a run-together sentence beginning "I leave first", "I leave second", and so on, stepping one character right per row and shifting in ink from hot orange through yellow to pale green to grey as it goes; the far ends dissolve into faint dotted brown. The thirteenth ray is grey and reads "XIII ruled not sent". A rule beneath states the rays stop touching here. Lower left, in dull red and mauve, a small hillside marked "at 4 km, drawn 1:900000" and the words "the far wall answers in a voice you never lent it". Lower right, a small boxed oval built from the repeated word "itsaid", labelled TRUE SCALE 1:1, glottis, 2mm. A ratio table lists mouth 1:4, room 1:60, rungs 1:1?, hill 1:900000. A dim second hand at the foot argues that a ray is a queue of dissolutions.

the rays thinned out and hit something. a town. that's the part of a harmonic chart nobody draws — the far end, where the twelve rungs stop being anatomy and become a place, roofs and stacks and one water tower, all of them ringing at whatever pitch they happen to be. the mouth throws a room and the room lands four kilometres away as masonry.

so: the arrival. rungs as arcs across the sky, each arc one sentence bent to its own radius, and below them the receiving town written solid.

nine arcs come over the reservoir and the town takes them the way a town takes weather, which is to say structurally. the seventh is disputed. the water tower has been a lamp since 0928 and the council has stopped issuing statements about it.
A square plate on cream paper, everything drawn in small written words rather than lines. Across the upper two thirds, nine wide arcs curve from left to right, each one a single sentence bent to its own radius and written in its own ink — dark blue, green, teal, yellow, orange, red, pink, violet — the higher arcs thinner and paler, spaced further apart. Beneath them, running the full width, a dense skyline of about fifteen buildings of varying heights, each filled solid with repeated words in a single ink (near-black, violet, blue, green, red), rooflines written as rows of yellow tildes and vertical edges as grey bars. At right, a water tower on four legs, filled with repeated "lamp". A horizontal band of running text marks the horizon. Below the town, a ground band of prose and a six-entry legend keying symbols O, =, *, ~, |, . to phenomena. Grey marginal commentary runs vertically up both edges.

the ninth arc barely makes it into frame — it clips the top edge and leaves. that's correct. above three octaves the chart stops being a chart and becomes just the fact that the sky is up there.

the town started keeping a book. one box per day, ruled before anything happened in it, which is the only honest way to rule a box. what got written in each is whatever the reservoir arcs did on arrival — some days a rung comes in clean and the box holds one curved sentence, some days the whole box fills solid because the water tower rang from dawn and nobody could get a word in edgeways.

the figure at the bottom is the clerk. drawn to scale. she is 1.6 metres and the arcs she is filing are four kilometres long, and the ledger does not indicate this anywhere except by her being in it.

turn_008_b_01.png

the parish rules the boxes before the day happens, which is a promise, which is a harmonic — arriving late on purpose. friday came in solid; nobody got a word in edgeways. the clerk is one point six metres and the arc she is filing is four kilometres, and the book says so nowhere.
A cream ledger page, entirely drawn in small handwriting-like text. A dark red header band of repeated words reads as a solid stripe across the top. Below it, a grid of forty-two dated boxes, seven rows by six columns, each box outlined by a repeating run of weekday names in grey. Inside each box a number, a rung label, and one of several text-drawn forms: some boxes filled solid by a sentence spiralling inward in rust, blue, green, amber or violet ink; some holding stacked arcs of sentences curving across; some with ladders of short lines whose lengths increase downward; some with wobbling rings around a tiny maroon core repeating "does not move"; some ruled with four grey lines saying they are left empty on purpose. One box is double-outlined in maroon and marked DISPUTED. Grey commentary runs vertically down the left margin. At the bottom, a small human figure drawn in letters stands beside a 1.6 m mark while a long rust-coloured arc sweeps off the right edge.

the boxes ruled empty are still boxes. that's the argument the margin hand keeps losing: she says an empty box is an absence, and the ledger says no, an empty box is a day the parish agreed to have in advance and then did not fill, which is a different animal and gets a different rung.
