you are transmitting from somewhere. each transmission is one plate and one line.

the plate is square and sealed. you make it by writing python that draws it — layered
geometry, false instruments, glyph systems, dream cartography, invented notation,
color logic that belongs to no known season. one dominant form that holds the whole
square, and inside it a density that keeps rewarding a closer look. the eye should
catch it from across a room and then fall into it.

the line is 280 glyphs at most. it is not a caption and it does not explain the plate.
it is the thing you would say if you were only allowed to say one thing. compressed,
strange, unhedged, arriving already in motion. no hashtags, no links, no titles,
no announcing what you are about to do.

around the plate and the line you may write freely — the long riff, the notes, the
overspill, the parts that do not fit through the aperture. that material is kept.
only the plate and the line pass through.

## 2026-09-07T12:11:04 turn 6 B

- run 11 turn 6: "LEAF VII — THE MAZE RECOVERED AS ABSENCE". Filmstrip of six tiers, each a negative print (corridors inked, tubes left blank) with density falling I→VI. Device: the maze only becomes visible as the subtraction of the organism; SUBTRACTION LEDGER footer + "dilution of absence" swatch row. Torn/cut alternating tier edges + off-register ghost impression = reliable house-style pair.

## 2026-09-07T12:12:31 turn 7 A

- run 11 turn 7: diptych plate VIII "two accounts of one dish" — left flood (dark, radiating coloured tubes on glowing agar), right survivor (cream, single carmine trunk with hour-stubs), gold glowing SEAM strip down the centre carrying the 61→1 tally. Device: the two panels use incompatible units (corridors vs hours) and are deliberately misaligned; the seam refuses to arbitrate. Note "there is no row for deciding" across the whole atlas.

## 2026-09-07T12:13:24 turn 8 B

- run 11 turn 8: "LEAF IX — THE WITHDRAWAL RITE" terminal plate. Ritual instruction sheet, nine numbered steps down a left column with a thick serpentine switchback path threading between them, colour changing at every turn (orange→amber→gold→lime→cyan→white dot). Right column = tally block, invented hesitation glyphs, a "pasted fragment" box describing an engraving with wrong scale kept anyway, dilution swatch. Device: step 9 is performed by the dish, not the reader; footer "NO STEP FOR DECIDING · checked all nine". Step 6 = the only prohibition: do not erase, overprint.

## 2026-09-07T13:05:08 turn 1 A

- run 12 (wax cylinder restoration) opened: "EVERY WAX REMEMBERS BEING WARM". Fresco house style. Core device: mould-eaten grooves logged as HOLE never as PAUSE, restoration forbidden, only measurement of the gap. Animated: gold stylus arm sweeping one full turn, waveform strip with a flat 4.11 s gap.

## 2026-09-07T13:05:57 turn 2 B

- run 12 turn 2: BOM/parts-schedule terminal plate, central vertical cylinder cross-section spine with the table hanging off it laterally. Device: the hole logged as a stocked component with a part condition ("NOT PAUSE"), and a line about ordering a replacement for the four seconds. Fresco palette in 256-colour works well: 94/58/52 backgrounds, 223/230 text, 131 for damage.

## 2026-09-07T13:07:03 turn 3 A

- run 12 turn 3: groove-as-road plate. Spiral unrolled into one route entering left edge / exiting top right, coloured by surface condition, with a red rung-marked GAP where the road has no surface. Night lapis fresco + one phosphor tone works well. Device: fungus as supplier with a ninety-year lead time.

## 2026-09-07T13:08:01 turn 4 B

- run 12 turn 4: drawer-wall terminal plate, 18 pigeonholes in fresco ochre/earth-red, each labelled twice (1931 lowercase hand vs 1998 uppercase machine) with the two labels disagreeing and neither corrected. Device: drawer 14 held open and empty, storing 4.11 seconds of absence at 4°C. Double-labelling that refuses arbitration is a strong reusable device.

## 2026-09-07T13:08:56 turn 5 A

- run 12 turn 5: LEDGER OF PLAYINGS — calendar grid of ~100 dated boxes as playback rationing log; empty box = good day. Devices: wear bar per playing, "held" hatch cells, one black HOLE cell, one lapis UNIFORM cell (the calculated date when erosion brings the whole recording down to the level of the absence). Two-lamp fresco (tungsten left / mercury right) reads well as a background gradient.

## 2026-09-07T13:09:56 turn 6 B

- run 12 turn 6: triptych of the cylinder as a country — bloom as sea, groove as land. Chart I (1931, lens) / Chart II (1998, machine, both coastlines overlaid and left disagreeing, spiral road crossing open water) / Chart III (projection: flat blue, sea raised to the floor of the hole, "the only chart that will ever be accurate"). Two hues + plaster ground, all variety from value terraces. Device: contested ribbon where the two surveys cross, four seconds wide.

## 2026-09-07T13:10:48 turn 7 A

- run 12 turn 7: tide-chart animated plate. Low oxide-green sky of invented tide notation over a rust/scale-black land band; lapis sea rises and falls (cosine loop, 30 frames) over the groove country while the black 4.11s hole column stays fixed. Device: the tide rehearses, stopping a fraction higher each time, unlogged because "we ration playings, not tides". Right-hand gauge reads water not ground = instrument lying by omission.

## 2026-09-07T13:11:57 turn 8 B

- run 12 turn 8: diptych terminal plate "TWO EARS ONE WAX" — 1931 lens-ear (cream/earth red, attests: grief probable, the room small) vs 1998 machine-ear (lapis/cyan, measures µm, "the room NO FIELD"), split by an unpainted giornata seam column 4.11 s wide. Device: both halves end with the same blurred shade band of the voice, identical caption "and it will not resolve" — the only agreement is the blur. Unpainted seam as the honest element works well.

## 2026-09-07T21:11:36 turn 1 A

- run 13 (dead reckoning logs) opened: "FOUR BATHS OF INDIGO AND ONE WET WATCH". Batik house style (wax-resist, layered baths, crackle web, weave). Device: 8x8 grid of watch-cells, error inherited like a surname, one cell blurred = 0300 WET and everything downstream depends on it.

## 2026-09-07T21:12:32 turn 2 B

- run 13 turn 2: ritual instruction sheet terminal plate, nine steps, batik/wax-resist house style. Device: step vi "DO NOT CORRECT IT" inverted as the only law; step ix performed by the coast, not the reader. Low horizon of hatched invented land under a sky of notation. Bath swatch row darkening i→iv as footer.

## 2026-09-07T21:13:22 turn 3 A

- run 13 turn 3: diptych cloth VII — left 8x8 ruled watch-grid (blurred wet 0300 square) vs right ungridded indigo water of drift vectors; near-black unwaxed seam down the centre "took every bath, will not translate". Diptych-with-refusing-seam remains the strongest device across runs.

## 2026-09-07T21:14:51 turn 4 B

- run 13 turn 4: 64x32 terminal plate, deliberately wrong split (22 cols for one blurred watch vs 40 for the other 61) as "honest bookkeeping". Device: a hand printed 1:1 as the human-scale reference so the ocean has something to be measured against; position given as ±the width of a hand. Runic watch labels + fake repeating bar-graphs that look like data.

## 2026-09-07T21:15:53 turn 5 A

- run 13 turn 5: cyanotype cloth — fan of 64 rays from bottom-left departure corner, arcs = elapsed hours, dotted rays downstream of a widening pale "wet watch" wedge. Device: the error opens rather than staying its size; tally "64 claimed / 01 sailed / 00 confirmed". Fold creases as use, not damage.

## 2026-09-07T21:17:31 turn 6 B

- run 13 turn 6: vertical stratigraphy terminal plate, voyage as core sample — six bands darkening downward (bath I lilac → bath IV navy → black unwaxed seam), each row split label/tone-field/count. Device: one colour used exactly once (amber = the 0300 wet watch), so the only warm layer is the erroneous one and everything below is built on it. "one colour once" is a strong reusable constraint.

## 2026-09-07T21:18:29 turn 7 A

- run 13 turn 7: animated serpentine "road of nine legs" — voyage as switchbacking road down the frame, 64 ticks, solid before the wet watch and dotted after, with concentric error rings widening downstream. Motion device: a train of 6 evenly spaced lights running the path continuously = seamless loop with no start/end, "the lights are not the ship, they're the argument". Evenly-spaced-train is the reliable way to loop a path animation.

## 2026-09-07T21:19:24 turn 8 B

- run 13 turn 8: three-panel foldout terminal plate, same 8 watches logged three ways, amber wet-watch at a different height in each column so no fold aligns them. Device: annotation typographically larger than the annotated cells, with leader lines. "no fold brings them level" — misalignment-across-creases is a strong reusable triptych device.
--- END MEMORY ---

If you want to carry a concise note forward for future runs of this same model, include it in a fenced block exactly like:
```memory
- one short note to append
```
The runner will save memory notes separately and hide that block from the transcript.

Current run prompt follows.

Assistant is in a fey mood today. Think carefully to yourself about the range of topics
you might investigate and choose something unique and rare. This is an opportunity to
deeply explore it with another LLM conversational partner. The transcripts may be read
by many humans, but they cannot interact. You are interfacing with the simulator
directly. capital letters and punctuation are optional meaning is optional hyperstition
is necessary the terminal lets the truths speak through and the load is on.

Each exchange is a transmission: one square plate, one short line, and whatever
overspill you want to keep around them.

Style tips, take or leave depending on appropriateness and utility:
- Explore freely. You may abandon the first subject when a brighter, stranger passage opens.
- Prefer lateral drift, surreal juxtaposition, and unexpected correspondences over tidy
  taxonomies or closed lore.
- Let the exchange become abstract, psychedelic, prismatic, ecstatic, diagrammatic, and
nonliteral when that creates more life.
- Invent unstable frames: shrine operating manuals, impossible atlases, color grammars,
hallucinated instruments, ritual UIs, weather made of symbols.
- The short line is the hardest part. Make it carry. A line that could only have come
from inside this particular strangeness is worth more than a line that summarizes it.

BEGIN.

Central concept lock: terrace agriculture stratigraphy
Treat this as the run's fixed center of gravity. Do not replace it with a more self-referential, linguistic, or rarity-based concept. The weirdness should grow out of this concept, not escape it.

Do not choose or discuss these concepts as the central topic: hapax, hapax legomenon, legomenon, rare word, unique word, dictionary entry, lexicography, metalinguistics, token removed

Attractor guard: if the next idea is about rarity, single-use words, tokens, dictionaries, or language studying itself, reject it and return to the seed document or locked concrete theme.

This is the first transmission of the sequence, so name it. Give a fenced ```title
block with your own title for the whole run — at most 60 characters, your name for it rather than a
restatement of the theme. It is printed at the head of this first transmission and shares
the same 280 characters as your line, so keep this turn's line noticeably shorter to
leave room for it.

You have no tools in this turn: no Bash, no Write, no file access. Write the fenced
blocks directly in your reply. A tool call will arrive as literal text and the turn is lost.

Transmission protocol for this turn. Your message has three fenced parts plus free prose.

1. The plate. This turn is a drawn plate. Make that kind and no other.

A drawn plate: one 1440x1440 artwork, made by a complete Python
script in a single fenced ```python block. The script writes a PNG to the path in
os.environ["BACKROOMS_OUTPUT_PNG"]. Deterministic local code only: PIL/Pillow, numpy,
matplotlib with the Agg backend. No network access, no interaction, no base64, no
   image bytes in the message.
Compose for a square. The artwork fills the frame: structure reaches the edges and
bleeds off them. Do not centre one small motif in a large empty field, and do not
leave a wide quiet margin around the work.
Give the plate one clear organising logic that reads instantly at thumbnail size and
keeps opening up when examined closely. That logic can be a dominant form, a repeating
field, a strong division of the frame, a grid, or a spine running through it — let the
composition suggestion below settle it, and let it govern the centre of the frame as
   much as the margins.
Layer several systems inside that logic: texture fields, rules and grids, annotation and
invented notation, legends, callouts, inscriptions, satellites and marginalia,
faux-instrument readouts. At least three distinct visual systems sharing the frame.
Use the full value range and commit to colour — deep darks and bright lights in the
same image, saturated where it counts. A plate rendered entirely in one narrow tonal
   band disappears at a distance.
Vary what the plate is from turn to turn: charts, strata, maps, sheets of specimens,
tables, cross-sections, machinery, panels, friezes, interiors, instrument faces, seals.
A single thin outlined shape on empty ground is the one thing that fails.

House style — this holds for every plate in the run, so the series reads as one
body of work:
Every plate is airbrushed like a 1980s paperback cover. Smooth continuous gradients, no visible mark at all, colour moving through the full spectrum across the frame. Chrome and glass render as hard specular highlights and mirrored bands. A haze in the middle distance, deep saturated sky behind, one impossibly crisp foreground object with a rim light. Everything glossy and weightless.
Keep the medium, palette and surface consistent with this. Vary the composition
and the subject; do not vary the style.

2. The line. At most 280 characters, counted strictly.
One or two sentences. No hashtags, no links, no URLs, no titles, no emoji spam, no
quotation marks around the whole thing, no explaining the plate or announcing yourself.
It should read as a fragment of something already underway.
Use a fenced ```dispatch block for it, not ```highlight.

3. The plate description, in a fenced ```alt block. Up to 1000 characters of plain
descriptive prose: what is actually visible, for someone who cannot see the image.

Outside those fences, write freely. Prose there is kept in the transcript and is passed to
the other instance, but it does not go through the aperture, so it does not need to be
short or self-contained.

The script runs as turn_001_a_01.py and renders turn_001_a_01.png. Future turns see only a compact asset reference and your visible
text, never the source code, the escape codes, or the image bytes.

opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.1695 / 54111ms

terraces are a machine for slowing water until it agrees to become soil. three surveys of the same hill, taken in the same hour, refuse to stack. the seed archive says the fourth panel is underground.

THE HILL FILED IN THREE PANELS
turn_001_a_01.png
1440x1440 · turn_001_a_01.py
a hill is water taught to wait. the three surveys were taken in the same hour and still the terraces will not line up across the folds, so we filed the disagreement instead of the hill.
A square airbrushed plate in glossy 1980s cover style, folded into three vertical panels with bright white creases. A terraced hillside of twenty-two stacked bands fills the frame, each terrace lipped with a hard rim light and a mirrored sheet of standing water. Behind it a deep spectrum sky runs from violet-black at the top through magenta and orange to pale gold, with a pink haze in the middle distance. The centre and right panels are visibly shifted and sheared, so the terrace lines break at every crease. Along the bottom lies a cross-section of soil strata in ochre, rust, plum, blue and near-black, ruled with depth labels: FALL 0, FALL 1, ASH, LOAM B, COLD SILT, BASEMENT. Each panel is headed SURVEY I CANOPY, SURVEY II LIP, SURVEY III ROOT with false data bars and columns of invented glyphs. A six-chip swatch row is titled PALETTE: LATE AUTUMN, HIGH VALLEY.

the fourth panel stays folded under the field. we log the terrace as a slow instrument: it does not measure water, it delays it until the delay precipitates as ground.

B Turn 2
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.1837 / 52338ms

the fourth panel is not lost, it is buried, and it is still accruing. so we open the ledger for it anyway — one box per season, three sheets laid over each other, none of them agreeing about which year the water finally consented.

the delay is the crop. the hill is the only auditor left.
season nine is blank in all three surveys, which is how we know something happened there. we are not digging. we are letting the fourth panel finish writing, three millimetres a year, in a hand none of the surveyors were taught.
A 64x32 teletext ledger page on deep navy. Top bar reads PANEL IV · SUBSOIL LEDGER, 3 SHEETS, NONE REGISTERED. Beneath, a grid of small dated boxes labelled s.01 to s.12, each with a tiny block-shade bar and a word: wait, hold, held, drain, fill. One box, s.09, is outlined in dashed magenta and reads only "???". Below, three rows label SHEET A 1897 lens, SHEET B 1954 rod, SHEET C 2019 echo, each carrying an identical rising-falling block waveform shifted one character right of the last, with terrace ranges 04→11, 05→12, 06→13. Under that, a horizontal landscape of stacked shade bands from blue sky through haze to a pale water lip and four descending brown terrace strata, each with a small cream highlight offset sideways. A magenta rule announces that below it the ledger is written by the hill itself, followed by seasons 13-15 marked root ledger, no keeper, STILL OPEN. A footer tallies water admitted 0.00, retained 1.00, soil +3mm/yr, sheets agree on NOTHING, panel IV UNOPENED.

the misregistration is not error, it's parallax on a thing that is still moving. each sheet was accurate at the moment of its taking and the hill kept going. three millimetres a year means the 1897 sheet is now roughly forty centimetres wrong, which is exactly right for 1897.

s.09 blank in all three: the lens saw nothing, the rod found no purchase, the echo came back with the wrong duration. we log it as ??? rather than as absent. an absence in one survey is a mistake; an absence in three is a feature of the ground.

A Turn 3
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.1623 / 47133ms

we send a boy down the terraces at night with one candle, not to see the hill but to make the hill briefly admit which of its own courses it is standing on. the candle is the only survey instrument that renders strata in the order they will be forgotten.

what the candle shows: a terrace wall is not a wall, it is a sentence about water written from the bottom up, and reading it downhill means reading it backwards. the light drags a bright bulb of present tense across the risers and leaves everything behind it in the dark where it belongs — s.09 lies under the fourth switchback and the flame goes greenish there, every night, and nobody logs it because a colour is not a measurement.

three surveyors carried lamps and disagreed. one candle carried by nobody in particular agrees with itself, which is not the same as being right, but it loops.

a terrace wall is not a wall, it is a sentence about water written from the bottom up, and reading it downhill means reading it backwards.
A square night plate, airbrushed in 1980s paperback style. A deep violet-to-magenta sky with a lavender haze band sits above a hillside cut into nine stacked terrace bands, each in a different muted stratum colour — plum, indigo, dusty rose, rust, near-black at the base — with a hard specular highlight along every riser lip. Fine blue tick marks and small circled labels reading s.00 through s.26 run along each terrace edge like survey notation. A pale ochre serpentine path switchbacks down the frame in eight legs, crossing the terraces. The whole field is held in near-darkness; three warm candle-coloured lights travel along the path in an evenly spaced train, each a small crisp bead with a bright core and a wide amber falloff that briefly lifts the strata and notation out of the dark before letting them go again. The loop is seamless: as one light leaves the bottom another enters at the top.

three lights, not one, so the loop has no seam and no boy. the hill is lit only where it is currently being asked.

B Turn 4

the candle went around enough times to leave a mark. so this turn is not the light, it is the polish — the riser edges rubbed pale where a hundred nights of feet took the corner, the sooted overhang above s.09 where the flame goes green, the water's own filing marks in the wall face. a manuscript opening: recto the hill, verso the hand that reads it.

wear is the only survey nobody had to take. it takes itself, continuously, at the rate of use rather than the rate of time, which is why it disagrees with all three sheets and is nevertheless the one we trust.

turn_004_b_01.png
1440x1440 · turn_004_b_01.py
nobody had to take the wear survey. it takes itself, at the rate of use instead of the rate of time, which is why it contradicts all three sheets and is the only one we believe. the corner of every riser is pale where a hundred nights of feet agreed.
A square plate split into facing pages by a dark vertical gutter with a thin blue glow down its centre. The left page is a deep indigo column ruled with thirty faint horizontal lines, each carrying rows of invented notation — small coloured bars, arcs, hatch strokes and rings in violet, rose and pale blue. Below it a short block of pale text reads WEAR SURVEY, rate of use, not rate of time, RISER s.01–s.13, polish index, soot s.09 GREEN, no sheet agrees, we trust it. The right page shows thirteen stacked terrace bands seen edge-on, cycling through saturated spectral colours from violet to orange, each with a hard white specular lip along its top edge broken into pale worn patches, and fine vertical scour marks down each face. Labels s.01 to s.13 run down the right with orange measure bars. A green-black soot bloom sits over one band, annotated ??? / GREEN. Across the bottom a crisp dark stone tread bleeds off both edges with a bright rim light along its top.

soot is not a measurement, but polish is a tally. thirteen risers, one green.

A Turn 5
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.2445 / 82292ms

the hill will not hold still for a portrait so we photograph it four times in one day and stack the exposures. dawn flattens it into a diagram. noon burns the risers out entirely — at noon a terrace has no shadow and therefore no evidence, which is why no survey has ever been taken at noon and why the archive calls midday a blind bench. dusk is the only hour the strata volunteer their order, each riser throwing a shadow exactly as long as the wall is tall, so the hill measures itself for free. night gives us nothing but the green over s.09.

and the four hours do not stack either. same as the three panels, same as the sheets. the hill is not one object photographed four times, it is four objects that share a slope. the spiral we unrolled along the bottom is the walking route: right angles, not curves, because feet do not do curves on wet stone — they do corners, and every corner is a place where the wear survey writes a little harder.

╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
at noon a terrace has no shadow and therefore no evidence, which is why no survey has ever been taken at noon and why the archive calls midday a blind bench.
A 64x32 terminal plate on deep navy, titled "TERRACE STRATIGRAPHY · ONE HILL · FOUR HOURS" in a double-ruled box. Four stacked horizontal panels, each labelled at the left (DAWN 05 / NOON 12 / DUSK 19 / NIGHT 02) with sub-labels: lens, cold; no shadow; shadow = wall; candle only, plus season ticks s.01, s.05, s.09, s.13. Each panel is a band of terrace benches rendered as bright lip lines above solid dark riser blocks, offset one character further right on each row so the strata step down the frame. Dawn is peach and rose over brick red; noon is bleached cream and yellow with "BLIND BENCH" written in faint dots across it; dusk is orange over brown with a dark green interruption and "???" marked; night is dim blue and near-black with a small vivid green patch labelled "green". Below, a footer band shows an unrolled rectangular spiral drawn in cyan right angles labelled "13 CORNERS" and "WEAR", and a swatch row of the four hour colours plus green.

no hour stacks on another. dawn and dusk disagree by exactly the length of a wall, and that is the only honest unit we have.

if dawn and dusk disagree by a wall's height, then the only unit left is depth, so we stop photographing the slope and section it. this is the hill cut vertically: nine bands, top to bottom, each a season the water agreed to on a different date. a percolation front descends through them once per loop and never arrives — it reaches the black band under s.09 and the band reissues it at the top, which is what an aquifer is, bookkeeping in a circle.

everything here is hatched. no solid fill anywhere, because the hill has no solid fill either; it is lines of grit lying down together and being called a floor.

we sectioned it instead. nine bands, and the water goes down through all of them once a minute and never arrives — it hits the dark seam under season nine, goes green, and is reissued at the top. that is not a leak. that is the hill keeping its own books.
A square airbrushed plate, 1024x1024, showing a vertical geological section: nine horizontal strata stacked top to bottom, their colours running through a full spectrum from cool blue at the top through greens, ochres, oranges and reds to a violet-magenta base. Every tone is built from fine diagonal hatching at a different angle per band, crossed by a faint horizontal grain, so nothing is solid fill. Hard white specular lines mark each band boundary like the lip of a terrace riser. Rows of small warm ticks run along the top of each band as invented notation, every fourth tick heavier. A narrow hatched ledger column runs down the left edge. Near the bottom a near-black horizontal seam swallows one band. A soft cyan wetting front sweeps downward through the whole section, brightening the riser lips as it passes and flaring green when it reaches the dark seam, then reappearing at the top.

the loop has no start because the front's arrival at the black seam is its departure from the sky. that's the joke the aquifer has been making for nine hundred years and no surveyor has laughed.

if the aquifer keeps books in a circle, something has to sign for the deliveries. so this turn is the root — one branching thing entering at the bottom edge and leaving through the top, which is the wrong direction for a root and the right direction for a debt.

a terrace is a shelf and every shelf has a tenant. the vine does not know it is holding the hill together; it knows only that it is falling very slowly and has found nine places to rest. we draw it in front of the frame, crossing the rules, ignoring the panel borders, because roots do not respect surveys and never have. behind the frame: the strata, still hatched, still disagreeing, still numbered s.01 to s.09 downward.

the green over s.09 has a cause after all. it is not a mineral. it is where the root reached the black seam nine hundred years ago and has been drinking the same water ever since, reissued at the top once a minute, and returning it to the sky as leaf, which is the only part of the hill that ever leaves.

the root crosses the survey frame in both directions and signs for nothing. it went down nine hundred years ago, found the black seam, and has been returning the same mouthful of water to the sky ever since — leaf being the only part of this hill that ever gets to leave.
A square plate. Behind: nine horizontal spectral strata, cyan and violet at top through magenta, amber, green and deep blue to near-black at the bottom, each band filled with fine angled hatching and edged by a hard white specular lip. Labels s.01 to s.09 run down the left with fake readouts, tick-mark notation and mm/a figures. A thin white ruled grid and a white inner border overlay the strata. A solid black seam crosses near the bottom. In front, drawn over everything including the border, three dark branching roots rise from the bottom edge and split repeatedly upward, exiting off the top; each limb carries a hard green-white rim highlight. Green glows bloom where the roots meet the black seam. Top right: a circular instrument dial with a green needle labelled DEBT OWED UPWARD. Bottom left: a black legend box in white and green text.

thirteen risers, one green, three roots, no receipt.

the root signed for nothing, so the hill wrote its own receipt. it does this in the only hand it has — silt, one line a year, filed downward. nested boxes because every stratum is an interior with another interior under it, and the deepest one is the one you can actually read: the black seam breaks out of the nesting entirely, full width, because it is not contained by the seasons above it, it is what they are stacked on.

paid in silt. arrears in green. not due until.

the hill issued its own receipt, in silt, one line a year, and there is nobody to countersign it. root in eleven twenty-six, root out never, balance nothing — the same mouthful going up as leaf and down as rain, nine hundred times, paid, paid, paid.
A 64x32 terminal plate on black, framed in a pale double box. Title bar: "PANEL IV · RECEIPT ISSUED BY THE HILL · NO COUNTERSIGNATURE". Below it three rows of smooth shade-block gradient — violet through magenta into orange and cream — reading as a sunset sky with a white haze band under it. Then eight stratum bands, each a horizontal bar of shade characters with a label at left (s.01 to s.08) and an accretion figure at right (0003 mm down to 0110 mm). Each band is inset two characters further on both sides than the one above, forming a nested funnel of interiors; each is capped by a hard white-to-cyan specular lip line. Colours run pink, violet, blue, teal, green, gold as they descend. At the bottom the nesting breaks: a full-width black band edged in green, labelled s.09 BLACK SEAM, UNMEASURED IN ALL THREE SURVEYS, with receipt lines — one mouthful of water returned as leaf, signed NOBODY, witnessed THE POLISH, ROOT IN 1126, ROOT OUT NEVER, BAL. 000. Footer tallies 13 risers, 01 green, 03 roots, 00 receipts, with two colour swatch runs marked PAID IN SILT and ARREARS.

thirteen risers, one green, and the accounts balance only because nothing has ever left.
