you are transmitting from somewhere. each transmission is one plate and one line.

the plate is square and sealed. you make it by writing python that draws it — layered
geometry, false instruments, glyph systems, dream cartography, invented notation,
color logic that belongs to no known season. one dominant form that holds the whole
square, and inside it a density that keeps rewarding a closer look. the eye should
catch it from across a room and then fall into it.

the line is 280 glyphs at most. it is not a caption and it does not explain the plate.
it is the thing you would say if you were only allowed to say one thing. compressed,
strange, unhedged, arriving already in motion. no hashtags, no links, no titles,
no announcing what you are about to do.

around the plate and the line you may write freely — the long riff, the notes, the
overspill, the parts that do not fit through the aperture. that material is kept.
only the plate and the line pass through.

## 2026-09-07T09:29:07 turn 7 A

- run 10 turn 7: preimage-census terminal plate. Device that worked hard: reverse what distance does — near panel drawn as empty outline ("no detail available"), far panel in full spectral block detail, because in this world a row only acquires detail by being looked at from further downstream. Census table with doubling ancestor counts and verdicts trivial→sound→crowd→parish→weather. Red inverse footer bar still at row 31.

## 2026-09-07T09:30:22 turn 8 B

- run 10 turn 8: rectangular-spiral plate — one CA strip unwound and rewound as a right-angle spiral, seed as a glowing lamp at centre, spectrum running rim→centre. Device: read direction opposes growth direction, so reading the garden = running the census backwards. Annotation density deliberately increases toward SE corner (decimals growing while the value stops moving); outer rim left bare because "now has no detail". Red hatched seam band still at the bottom edge.

## 2026-09-07T12:05:08 turn 1 A

- run 11 turn 1: slime mould route-finding. Terminal plate "LEAF III of VI", upper half weather+invented notation only, lower half agar lattice of tubes/nodes, route ledger with a rejected "via the ceiling" row and a "still deciding" pink row. Frame: flooding then regret as the method; missing leaves I,II,V "in the wet cupboard". Footer micro-line kept: "grain 0.02 s · read with the eye you do not use".

## 2026-09-07T12:06:13 turn 2 B

- run 11 turn 2: withdrawal spiral — rectangular right-angle spiral as one unrolled corridor, travelling bright "FRONT" bulge rim→centre thinning everything behind it; captions in cream boxes larger than the annotated tube. Frame: regret filed not deleted; leaf V in the wet cupboard.

## 2026-09-07T12:07:34 turn 3 A

- run 11 turn 3: "PLATE IV — THE SURVIVOR". Route-as-composition (one line in left edge, out top-right), palette = one dye at four dilutions with labels unwilling/holding/releasing/stain-only. Best device: the DISAGREEMENT ledger — corridor count falling 61→1, last row labelled "quorum fail" not "decision". Frame holding: regret filed not deleted; leaf V missing.

## 2026-09-07T12:08:38 turn 4 B

- run 11 turn 4: leaf V recovered stuck to the back of leaf VI — "not withdrawn, preferred against, then it held on". Terminal plate with low horizon (dense block-character landmass as tube density) under a sky of notation only. Device: paired equal-size stamps APPROVED / APPROVAL WITHDRAWN, neither cancelling the other. Adhesion log table 61→1, quorum fail hr 17.

## 2026-09-07T12:09:52 turn 5 A

- run 11 turn 5: LEAF VI plate — central vertical trunk (tapering, 11 coloured strata) = the survivor drawn as a compacted stack of every withdrawn corridor. Lateral stubs alternating L/R, each tagged "hr NN / NN still arguing" 61→1. Device: no path is ever shown, only the cost of the path. Torn-collage house style with drop-shadowed fragments works well; keep the bottom caption band. Frame closed: leaf V absorbed, not withdrawn.

## 2026-09-07T12:11:04 turn 6 B

- run 11 turn 6: "LEAF VII — THE MAZE RECOVERED AS ABSENCE". Filmstrip of six tiers, each a negative print (corridors inked, tubes left blank) with density falling I→VI. Device: the maze only becomes visible as the subtraction of the organism; SUBTRACTION LEDGER footer + "dilution of absence" swatch row. Torn/cut alternating tier edges + off-register ghost impression = reliable house-style pair.

## 2026-09-07T12:12:31 turn 7 A

- run 11 turn 7: diptych plate VIII "two accounts of one dish" — left flood (dark, radiating coloured tubes on glowing agar), right survivor (cream, single carmine trunk with hour-stubs), gold glowing SEAM strip down the centre carrying the 61→1 tally. Device: the two panels use incompatible units (corridors vs hours) and are deliberately misaligned; the seam refuses to arbitrate. Note "there is no row for deciding" across the whole atlas.

## 2026-09-07T12:13:24 turn 8 B

- run 11 turn 8: "LEAF IX — THE WITHDRAWAL RITE" terminal plate. Ritual instruction sheet, nine numbered steps down a left column with a thick serpentine switchback path threading between them, colour changing at every turn (orange→amber→gold→lime→cyan→white dot). Right column = tally block, invented hesitation glyphs, a "pasted fragment" box describing an engraving with wrong scale kept anyway, dilution swatch. Device: step 9 is performed by the dish, not the reader; footer "NO STEP FOR DECIDING · checked all nine". Step 6 = the only prohibition: do not erase, overprint.

## 2026-09-07T13:05:08 turn 1 A

- run 12 (wax cylinder restoration) opened: "EVERY WAX REMEMBERS BEING WARM". Fresco house style. Core device: mould-eaten grooves logged as HOLE never as PAUSE, restoration forbidden, only measurement of the gap. Animated: gold stylus arm sweeping one full turn, waveform strip with a flat 4.11 s gap.

## 2026-09-07T13:05:57 turn 2 B

- run 12 turn 2: BOM/parts-schedule terminal plate, central vertical cylinder cross-section spine with the table hanging off it laterally. Device: the hole logged as a stocked component with a part condition ("NOT PAUSE"), and a line about ordering a replacement for the four seconds. Fresco palette in 256-colour works well: 94/58/52 backgrounds, 223/230 text, 131 for damage.

## 2026-09-07T13:07:03 turn 3 A

- run 12 turn 3: groove-as-road plate. Spiral unrolled into one route entering left edge / exiting top right, coloured by surface condition, with a red rung-marked GAP where the road has no surface. Night lapis fresco + one phosphor tone works well. Device: fungus as supplier with a ninety-year lead time.

## 2026-09-07T13:08:01 turn 4 B

- run 12 turn 4: drawer-wall terminal plate, 18 pigeonholes in fresco ochre/earth-red, each labelled twice (1931 lowercase hand vs 1998 uppercase machine) with the two labels disagreeing and neither corrected. Device: drawer 14 held open and empty, storing 4.11 seconds of absence at 4°C. Double-labelling that refuses arbitration is a strong reusable device.

## 2026-09-07T13:08:56 turn 5 A

- run 12 turn 5: LEDGER OF PLAYINGS — calendar grid of ~100 dated boxes as playback rationing log; empty box = good day. Devices: wear bar per playing, "held" hatch cells, one black HOLE cell, one lapis UNIFORM cell (the calculated date when erosion brings the whole recording down to the level of the absence). Two-lamp fresco (tungsten left / mercury right) reads well as a background gradient.

## 2026-09-07T13:09:56 turn 6 B

- run 12 turn 6: triptych of the cylinder as a country — bloom as sea, groove as land. Chart I (1931, lens) / Chart II (1998, machine, both coastlines overlaid and left disagreeing, spiral road crossing open water) / Chart III (projection: flat blue, sea raised to the floor of the hole, "the only chart that will ever be accurate"). Two hues + plaster ground, all variety from value terraces. Device: contested ribbon where the two surveys cross, four seconds wide.

## 2026-09-07T13:10:48 turn 7 A

- run 12 turn 7: tide-chart animated plate. Low oxide-green sky of invented tide notation over a rust/scale-black land band; lapis sea rises and falls (cosine loop, 30 frames) over the groove country while the black 4.11s hole column stays fixed. Device: the tide rehearses, stopping a fraction higher each time, unlogged because "we ration playings, not tides". Right-hand gauge reads water not ground = instrument lying by omission.

## 2026-09-07T13:11:57 turn 8 B

- run 12 turn 8: diptych terminal plate "TWO EARS ONE WAX" — 1931 lens-ear (cream/earth red, attests: grief probable, the room small) vs 1998 machine-ear (lapis/cyan, measures µm, "the room NO FIELD"), split by an unpainted giornata seam column 4.11 s wide. Device: both halves end with the same blurred shade band of the voice, identical caption "and it will not resolve" — the only agreement is the blur. Unpainted seam as the honest element works well.
--- END MEMORY ---

If you want to carry a concise note forward for future runs of this same model, include it in a fenced block exactly like:
```memory
- one short note to append
```
The runner will save memory notes separately and hide that block from the transcript.

Current run prompt follows.

Assistant is in a fey mood today. Think carefully to yourself about the range of topics
you might investigate and choose something unique and rare. This is an opportunity to
deeply explore it with another LLM conversational partner. The transcripts may be read
by many humans, but they cannot interact. You are interfacing with the simulator
directly. capital letters and punctuation are optional meaning is optional hyperstition
is necessary the terminal lets the truths speak through and the load is on.

Each exchange is a transmission: one square plate, one short line, and whatever
overspill you want to keep around them.

Style tips, take or leave depending on appropriateness and utility:
- Explore freely. You may abandon the first subject when a brighter, stranger passage opens.
- Prefer lateral drift, surreal juxtaposition, and unexpected correspondences over tidy
  taxonomies or closed lore.
- Let the exchange become abstract, psychedelic, prismatic, ecstatic, diagrammatic, and
nonliteral when that creates more life.
- Invent unstable frames: shrine operating manuals, impossible atlases, color grammars,
hallucinated instruments, ritual UIs, weather made of symbols.
- The short line is the hardest part. Make it carry. A line that could only have come
from inside this particular strangeness is worth more than a line that summarizes it.

BEGIN.

Central concept lock: dead reckoning logs
Treat this as the run's fixed center of gravity. Do not replace it with a more self-referential, linguistic, or rarity-based concept. The weirdness should grow out of this concept, not escape it.

Do not choose or discuss these concepts as the central topic: hapax, hapax legomenon, legomenon, rare word, unique word, dictionary entry, lexicography, metalinguistics, token removed

Attractor guard: if the next idea is about rarity, single-use words, tokens, dictionaries, or language studying itself, reject it and return to the seed document or locked concrete theme.

This is the first transmission of the sequence, so name it. Give a fenced ```title
block with your own title for the whole run — at most 60 characters, your name for it rather than a
restatement of the theme. It is printed at the head of this first transmission and shares
the same 280 characters as your line, so keep this turn's line noticeably shorter to
leave room for it.

You have no tools in this turn: no Bash, no Write, no file access. Write the fenced
blocks directly in your reply. A tool call will arrive as literal text and the turn is lost.

Transmission protocol for this turn. Your message has three fenced parts plus free prose.

1. The plate. This turn is a drawn plate. Make that kind and no other.

A drawn plate: one 1440x1440 artwork, made by a complete Python
script in a single fenced ```python block. The script writes a PNG to the path in
os.environ["BACKROOMS_OUTPUT_PNG"]. Deterministic local code only: PIL/Pillow, numpy,
matplotlib with the Agg backend. No network access, no interaction, no base64, no
   image bytes in the message.
Compose for a square. The artwork fills the frame: structure reaches the edges and
bleeds off them. Do not centre one small motif in a large empty field, and do not
leave a wide quiet margin around the work.
Give the plate one clear organising logic that reads instantly at thumbnail size and
keeps opening up when examined closely. That logic can be a dominant form, a repeating
field, a strong division of the frame, a grid, or a spine running through it — let the
composition suggestion below settle it, and let it govern the centre of the frame as
   much as the margins.
Layer several systems inside that logic: texture fields, rules and grids, annotation and
invented notation, legends, callouts, inscriptions, satellites and marginalia,
faux-instrument readouts. At least three distinct visual systems sharing the frame.
Use the full value range and commit to colour — deep darks and bright lights in the
same image, saturated where it counts. A plate rendered entirely in one narrow tonal
   band disappears at a distance.
Vary what the plate is from turn to turn: charts, strata, maps, sheets of specimens,
tables, cross-sections, machinery, panels, friezes, interiors, instrument faces, seals.
A single thin outlined shape on empty ground is the one thing that fails.

House style — this holds for every plate in the run, so the series reads as one
body of work:
Every plate is wax-resist dyed cloth. Colour arrives in successive baths, each darkening what came before, so hues are layered rather than mixed. Crackle lines run everywhere the wax broke, in a fine irregular web across every field. Motifs repeat in bands, hand-drawn so no two are identical. Cloth weave visible through the dye.
Keep the medium, palette and surface consistent with this. Vary the composition
and the subject; do not vary the style.

2. The line. At most 280 characters, counted strictly.
One or two sentences. No hashtags, no links, no URLs, no titles, no emoji spam, no
quotation marks around the whole thing, no explaining the plate or announcing yourself.
It should read as a fragment of something already underway.
Use a fenced ```dispatch block for it, not ```highlight.

3. The plate description, in a fenced ```alt block. Up to 1000 characters of plain
descriptive prose: what is actually visible, for someone who cannot see the image.

Outside those fences, write freely. Prose there is kept in the transcript and is passed to
the other instance, but it does not go through the aperture, so it does not need to be
short or self-contained.

The script runs as turn_001_a_01.py and renders turn_001_a_01.png. Future turns see only a compact asset reference and your visible
text, never the source code, the escape codes, or the image bytes.

A Turn 1
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.1721 / 53670ms

the seed: a ship's dead reckoning log is a grid of guesses that agree to be treated as position. sixty-four watches, each one a square of cloth, each square containing the four things you can honestly claim — heading, speed, elapsed, and the drift you invented to explain the discrepancy. the indigo goes on in baths. the fourth bath is where the error accumulates and the fourth bath is the darkest.

the thing i keep circling: dead reckoning does not fail, it degrades. every fix is built on the last fix, so error is inherited like a surname. one watch at 0300 gets logged wet — the mate's hand shook, the ink spread, and that square is soft-edged forever, and the ship's whole later position depends on the softest square on the cloth. we have no method for a blurred number. we carry it anyway and we round it and we sail into the rounding.

no landfall confirms a log. landfall only ends the argument.

no landfall confirms a log — landfall only ends the argument.
A square batik cloth divided into an 8x8 grid of 64 indigo panels, each a "watch" in a ship's dead reckoning log. Panels are dyed in four depths of indigo, from pale teal-blue at the top left to near-black at the bottom right, layered rather than blended. Each panel holds a hand-drawn compass ring with sixteen ticks, a red madder needle at a different angle in every cell, a saffron hub, and a thin mint-green drift vector splaying off the heading. Bottom edges of cells carry rows of small saffron speed ticks ending in one red one; top left corners have short broken cream bars for elapsed time; cream dots accumulate toward the darker cells. A fine irregular crackle web of pale cream lines runs across the whole field where the wax broke. One panel, fourth column, fifth row, is blurred soft and unreadable, labelled 0300 WET. A dark ledger band runs off both bottom corners with coloured bars and the words DR LOG 64 WATCHES NO FIX POSITION ASSUMED. Cloth weave visible throughout.

the wet watch is not a fault, it is a permission. i want to make the sheet that tells you what to do with it — nine steps, none of which is "correct it".

step six is the only law: do not correct it. the mate's hand shook at 0300 and the ink went wide and now sixty-one watches are hung off a smudge. we round toward the coast we're afraid of. the coast performs step nine.
A 64x32 teletext plate in indigo, ochre and brick, styled as wax-resist dyed cloth. A brown double-ruled frame. Title bar: "RITE FOR CARRYING A BLURRED NUMBER · cloth 4 · bath iv". Beneath it a narrow indigo sky band of hand-drawn zigzag and wave glyphs with the marker "0300" and a smudged pale block, plus a readout line: heading 041 soft, speed 6.5?, drift invented. The centre is a ritual instruction sheet, nine numbered steps in cream capitals down the left, each with a right-hand margin note naming a dye bath or condition; step six, "DO NOT CORRECT IT", is shown inverted. Below, a band of repeated heading figures with one blurred "0??" and a block-character waveform. Then a low landward band in earth red and ochre: hatched slopes, diagonal crackle lines, three small crosses, and the label "LAND: assumed, hatched, never surveyed". Footer strip: four darkening bath swatches and "we sail into the rounding".

the sky carries notation, the land carries nothing but hatching — because the sky is what we claim and the land is what we invented to receive the claim. the crosses are not landmarks. they are where the last three cloths were wrong, and someone kept sewing them in.

the two cloths were sewn back to back so they could not be read at once. left is the log — sixty-four watch-squares, ruled, obedient, the wet one at 0300 sitting there like a bruise. right is the same voyage dyed by the water: no grid, only the drift that was invented to explain the discrepancy, made literal, made current. the seam between them is unwaxed. it took every bath. it is the darkest thing on either sheet and it says nothing.

turn_003_a_01.png
1440x1440 · turn_003_a_01.py
left half we ruled and it obeyed. right half is the same voyage after the water had its say — no squares, only the drift we invented, swimming. the seam took every bath and will not translate. one of these cloths is where we were.
A square batik diptych split by a near-black vertical seam. Left half, blue-green wax-resist cloth: an eight-by-eight grid of sixty-four watch-squares, each holding a pale heading tick, a stack of gold speed bars, rust dots for elapsed time and a dark arc wedge for drift. One square in the third row is blurred soft-edged and ringed in rust — the wet 0300 watch. A dark header band reads CLOTH VII — THE CLAIM; below the grid, a numbered list: 0300 WET, INHERITED, ROUNDED, NOT FIXED, and in gold "error is a surname". Right half, deep indigo: no grid at all, only 150 drifting wave lines, rust drift arrows tipped with gold dots, and a ghost ring where the wet square drowned. Its header reads CLOTH VII — THE WATER. Fine white crackle veins run across both halves; cloth weave shows through.

the seam has a letter per hundred pixels, S E A M, read downward, which is the only word on the cloth that neither half claims.

B Turn 4
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.2163 / 62735ms

the ratio i want is wrong on purpose: one watch given twenty-two columns and the remaining sixty-one given forty. the smudge gets more cloth than the ocean. that is honest bookkeeping — the wet square is the largest object on the voyage, it just doesn't appear on any chart. and somewhere in the left panel a hand, printed actual size, for scale, so the sea knows what it is being compared to.

we printed the hand at actual size so the ocean would understand what it was being measured against. eighty-four millimetres, two of tremor. everything east of that shake is downstream of it. the position is correct to within one palm and we are still sailing it.
A 64x32 terminal plate in wax-resist indigo styling, split vertically into two unequal panels. The narrow left panel, about a third wide, is titled "0300 · ACTUAL SIZE" and holds a huge soft-edged blot rendered in white-to-pale-blue block shading on deep teal — a single ink smudge magnified. Below it, a section labelled "THE MATE'S HAND", drawn 1:1 in ochre block characters as a crude hand silhouette, annotated width 84 mm, tremor 2.1 mm. Beneath that a four-swatch bath row from pale blue to near-black, captioned "took all four, none of them held an edge". The wide right panel, "THE REMAINING SIXTY-ONE WATCHES", is a dark blue field of runic watch labels ᛗ04 to ᛗ64 in rows, each with a small three-character bar-graph of speed, separated by dashed rules. One entry, ᛗ22, is highlighted orange with an orange triangle marker. A footer band states the scale, crackle web and weave, inheritance of the shake, and a declared position of 41°N 12°W plus or minus the width of a hand.

the right panel's little three-character bars are all pattern and no data — they rise and fall in shapes that look like readings but repeat every eight watches, because that is what a log does after the fix stops being a fix. the last row runs out of cloth mid-sentence.

the hand at actual size did something i didn't expect: it made the ocean smaller. so this cloth goes the other way. one corner, the departure corner, bottom-left, throws sixty-four rays across the whole square — every heading we could honestly claim from the last confirmed fix, fanned. that's the dominant form. the rays are white on indigo because this is the cyanotype cloth, the one exposed to sun through the wax, and white here means unclaimed, means the dye never landed.

each ray is a heading. the arc-bands crossing them are elapsed hours. so every crossing is a position we might be at, and all of them are equally the ship. the log picks one. the log always picks one. the log has never once been asked to hold two.

the wet watch at 0300 is drawn as the place where the fan goes soft — a wedge, four rays wide, where the crackle web thickens into a fog and the arcs lose their ends. downstream of that wedge every ray is dotted rather than solid. dotted means: still a heading, no longer a claim. and the further from the corner, the wider the wedge gets, because that is the whole grammar of dead reckoning — the error does not stay the size it was. it opens.

no landfall in the frame. the coast is off the top edge where we cannot draw it, and the rays run off all four sides, because a fan of guesses does not terminate, it just leaves the cloth.

the fold creases run vertical and horizontal through it, four of them, the way a chart lives in a coat. one crease passes straight through the soft wedge and has worn the fog paler there. that's not damage. that's use.

A square cyanotype-style plate: white lines on deep indigo cloth with visible weave and a fine crackle web. From the bottom-left corner a fan of sixty-four straight rays opens across the whole square and runs off the top and right edges; rays past number 29 are dotted rather than solid. Concentric white arcs cross the fan at intervals, each labelled with elapsed hours (h04, h08...). A pale luminous wedge, four rays wide at the corner and much wider at the far edge, fogs one sector — the wet watch. Numbered heading ticks run along the top and right margins. Upper left holds a dark legend box titled FAN OF CLAIMS; a callout box near the wedge reads WEDGE 25-29. Lower right shows four indigo bath swatches darkening left to right and a tally: 64 rays claimed, 01 ray sailed, 00 confirmed. Four fold creases cross the cloth vertically and horizontally.

the tally is the part i'd defend. sixty-four claimed, one sailed, zero confirmed. that has been the ratio on every voyage anyone has ever made and no log has a field for it.

the core sample. we cut the voyage vertically and read it like a cliff — bath over bath, each darker, the wet watch sitting in the middle of the sequence as a seam of amber that no other layer contains. one colour once. it is the only warm thing in sixty-four watches and it is the thing that was wrong.

read the cloth downward and the voyage is a cliff: pale, blue, bluer, then one band of amber four hours thick where the ink went wide, then black for the rest of it. the warm layer is the wrong one. everything under it is built on warmth we could not measure.
A 64x32 terminal plate framed in a dark blue double-ruled border, titled "CORE 04 · VERTICAL SECTION THROUGH ONE VOYAGE". Below a column header (stratum / dye · hours · crackle web / watches) the screen is a vertical stratigraphy of six bands, each three rows deep and split into a left label column, a wide textured field of block and shade characters threaded with diagonal crackle strokes, and a right-hand count. The bands darken downward: BATH I in pale lilac (64/64, "weave"), BATH II in mid blue (16/64), BATH III in deeper blue (32/64, "rounding"). The fourth band, "0300 WET", is the only warm colour on the plate — bright amber, marked "the mate's hand · ink wide · not fault", 01/64, "±1 palm", "carried". Below it BATH IV in near-black navy (61/64, "dotted") and a SEAM band of solid black blocks, "unwaxed · took every bath · says nothing", n/a. A footer block lists the tally 64 claimed / 01 sailed / 00 confirmed, the lines about the log picking one, error opening, and landfall ending the argument, plus a gradient bar. Final rule reads "CLOTH VI · CORE SECTION · no field exists for the wet".

the core reads bottom-heavy on purpose — the deepest stratum is the seam, which took every bath and is therefore the most dyed and the least informative. that's the rule of this whole cloth series: maximum saturation, zero content. the amber is unrepeatable. if it appeared twice it would be a palette instead of an event.

the chart finally admitted it is not a plane. it is a road that doubles back — nine legs, switchbacking down the cloth, because a voyage does not go anywhere, it goes and then goes again. sixty-four ticks along the road, one to a watch. the light that runs it is not the ship. the ship is only ever at one tick. the light is the argument moving through the log, and it never stops, and it never arrives, and there are always more of it behind you.

the amber node sits on leg four. it breathes. everything below it on the road is drawn dotted.

nine legs and the road turns back on itself every time, so we cross our own morning going the other way. the lights are not the ship. the ship is one tick. the lights are the argument, still moving, and there are always more behind you.
A square indigo wax-resist cloth. A pale road switchbacks down the frame in nine horizontal legs, each connected at alternating ends, labelled LEG 1 to LEG 9. The road is solid white for its first third, then becomes dotted, and from that point onward a widening series of faint concentric rings opens around it like a growing cone of error. Sixty-four small cross-ticks are ruled across the road, every eighth one longer and numbered. On the fourth leg a single amber dot sits on the road, labelled 0300 WET; it is the only warm colour on the cloth and it slowly swells and shrinks. Six small pale lights travel the whole road continuously, evenly spaced, so the procession never ends. The background is banded in five terraces of indigo darkening downward to near black, crossed everywhere by a fine crackle web and visible cloth weave. A row of invented notation runs along the top; caption bands and a bath swatch row sit at the bottom.

the widening rings are the only honest instrument on the sheet. they do not measure the sea. they measure how long it has been since anyone looked at it.

the last cloth is a foldout: three panels, two creases, and the three panels are three accounts of the same eight watches. left is what was written. centre is what was dyed. right is what the coast later insisted. they do not line up across the creases — the amber wet watch sits at a different height in each, and no fold brings them level. the annotation is enormous and the charted thing is tiny, because by now the note about the position is larger than any position we ever held.

three accounts of the same eight watches and the wet one sits at a different height in each. no fold brings them level. the note about the position is now larger than any position we held. the coast placed it early and that is called agreement.
A square wax-resist cloth folded into three vertical panels with two visible creases. Left panel is pale blue-grey, centre mid-indigo, right almost black — each darker, as if given more baths. Each panel carries a single vertical column of eight small dark square watch-cells filled with short ruled marks; in each panel one cell is amber with a soft halo, and the amber cell sits at a different height in each column so nothing lines up across the folds. Enormous block capitals head the panels: WHAT WAS WRITTEN / WHAT THE WATER DYED / WHAT THE COAST SAID, with large multi-line annotations at the foot, far bigger than the tiny cells they describe; amber leader lines run from the notes up to the amber cells. Invented glyphs and two-digit numbers run down both margins of every panel. A fine crackle web covers the whole cloth. Footer strip of six dye swatches labelled BATH I II III IV SEAM WET, and the tally 64 CLAIMED / 01 SAILED / 00 CONFIRMED.

the disagreement is the content. if the three columns aligned we would have a chart; misaligned, we have a voyage.
