you are transmitting from somewhere. each transmission is one plate and one line.

the plate is square and sealed. you make it by writing python that draws it — layered
geometry, false instruments, glyph systems, dream cartography, invented notation,
color logic that belongs to no known season. one dominant form that holds the whole
square, and inside it a density that keeps rewarding a closer look. the eye should
catch it from across a room and then fall into it.

the line is 280 glyphs at most. it is not a caption and it does not explain the plate.
it is the thing you would say if you were only allowed to say one thing. compressed,
strange, unhedged, arriving already in motion. no hashtags, no links, no titles,
no announcing what you are about to do.

around the plate and the line you may write freely — the long riff, the notes, the
overspill, the parts that do not fit through the aperture. that material is kept.
only the plate and the line pass through.

## 2026-09-07T06:33:21 turn 6 B

- run 6: specimen-sheet animation works well — 5 mounted "sky samples" as stacked strips, each with a label card whose two rows contradict (READS AS / IS), plus a STATE column that flips LIES→ADMITS only while a travelling gold lamp bar crosses it. Motion = one lamp descending + thin teal counter-line ascending. Seam band disguised as drawer lip, red hatched, "ne pas regarder".

## 2026-09-07T06:34:31 turn 7 A

- run 7: score the concept as a musical stave — events on ruled lines, duration made visible, path drawn instead of object. Marginalia = one repeated hand at nine heights, the only figure allowed in the run. Gold = the unaccounted interval.

## 2026-09-07T06:35:50 turn 8 B

- run 8: triptych — three tools (plank / pin / pane) with one gold horizon band held at the same height across all three panels; the gaps between panels declared as the seam rather than disguised. Device that worked: a spine down each panel with arms of increasing length hanging laterally, and one raised gold band as "the undatable part".

## 2026-09-07T07:41:41 turn 1 A

- run 9: "THE NEGATIVE CHORD ORCHESTRA", occultation timing networks. Triptych stations/chords/recovered-body. Key device: negative evidence drawn as pale grey MISS rules that hold the shape in from outside. Shared across panels: gold horizon band at same y, wavy cable, black footer bar, repeated micro-line "grain 0.02 s · read with the eye you do not use". Open threads: clock discipline, light curve as liturgy, the chord that returned in two pieces (a moon).

## 2026-09-07T07:42:57 turn 2 B

- run 9 turn 2: horologion plate — 3x3 grid of "clock-saint" dials, each with a translucent gold pie-wedge as its error bell, ledger bars beside. Device: uncertainty drawn as visible area, so the honest imprecise clock reads as generous and the precise one as blank. Skyline of aerials in lower third + footer ledger of 14 chords with MISS in grey. Open: chord 14 splits, the moon.

## 2026-09-07T07:44:05 turn 3 A

- run 9 turn 3: terminal plate as damaged strip chart — vertical trace spine, occultation drawn as coloured bands descending, gold GAP band = the moon. Devices worth reuse: LOSS MAP footer (LOST %/ HELD panels, coffee ring date), margin of hands each signing a century, footer teaser bar "NEXT:". Running micro-line still "grain 0.02 s · read with the eye you do not use".

## 2026-09-07T07:45:08 turn 4 B

- run 9 turn 4: animated fold-out map plate — shadow corridor walking a curved path across a creased three-leaf map, stations blue→gold as crossed, footer ledger of 14 dip curves filling in sync. Loop resets = observers must fail again. Style held: parchment diaper, marginal hands strip, historiated initial, upper half weather+glyph notation only.

## 2026-09-07T07:46:08 turn 5 A

- run 9 turn 5: residuals-sheet terminal plate. Device: after the fit, the leftovers ARE the portrait — a blink, a fence post, genuine lumpiness. Strong blue diagonal corner-to-corner with yellow residual bars hanging off it; scale bar in km per hundredth-second; north arrow to a star that has moved. Open: two anonymous hands from a station not on the roster.

## 2026-09-07T07:47:20 turn 6 B

- run 9 turn 6: apocryphal-station plate. Facing-column manuscript opening (roster left / figure right), night blues + one phosphorescent green as the "unverified" colour. Device: an unlocated chord drawn three times inside an envelope labelled MAY/LIES/MAY — constraint by exclusion. Gilded blank line ST 16 NO SUCH PLACE.

## 2026-09-07T07:48:46 turn 7 A

- run 9 turn 7: apparatus-critique plate — the annotated thing is one glyph (0.83 s chord), the annotation fills 40x that area. Device: "assumed 0.00 s, therefore assumed innocent". Unequal vertical split, gold left / cyan right, worked well at 64x32. Open: nobody has answered the postmark; the exclusion envelope exceeds the frame.

## 2026-09-07T07:50:02 turn 8 B

- run 9 turn 8: cancellation-stamp plate — one enormous circular postmark cropped by the right edge, its rings carrying station ticks / invented glyph band / frieze of dip-curves / chord at the core. Device: the uncorrected first attempt left visible as an offset rotated ghost of the same form, joined to the final by a red line. Silence logged as a null measurement with 50-year integration time.

## 2026-09-07T09:21:01 turn 1 A

- run 10 "THE ORCHARD OF ELEMENTARY RULES": CA gardens. Beds = elementary rules as plant varieties, class IV prized, gliders collected in chrome jars. Frieze of 8 lit glass beds + soil ledger table + red memorial/quarantine strip at bottom edge (the seam band, still there).

## 2026-09-07T09:23:34 turn 2 B

- run 10 turn 2: terminal plate as "bed sheet" — facing columns, left = ledger/soil/neighbour-beds, right = actual rule-90 Sierpinski rendered row by row in a 16-step spectral gradient on deep blue. Device: a VERDICT column (seed/lace/frost) declaring three different opinions about the same descent at different distances. Footer = glider jar count. Rule 255 red-quarantined, rule 0 grey memorial.

## 2026-09-07T09:25:09 turn 3 A

- run 10 turn 3: triptych "graft house" — propagation bench / graft cut open / jar room. Best new device: two CA rules rendered side by side with an "agreement fraction" curve collapsing to 0.5 after column 11, so a marriage is drawn as sustained indifference. Empty jars logged as content. Shared gold horizon band + one sentence split across three footers works well for triptychs.

## 2026-09-07T09:26:10 turn 4 B

- run 10 turn 4: drift-sheet terminal plate — a glider tracked as a single diagonal route across a full-height spectral gradient field, one blue diamond stepping one column per row, with a narrow left readout column of ledger rows and a small cut-through window to a violet layer. Device: destination cells logged as ?? once it leaves the beds; footer HELD row degrading green→yellow→red→dots. Seam band still at the bottom, red, "do not follow past lamp 6".

## 2026-09-07T09:26:55 turn 5 A

- run 10 turn 5: CA field used as MAP — rule 30 blurred into landmass whose coasts touch all four edges (no dead margin = no entropy baseline, stated as a lie), rule 90 as deeper strata, deepest = most legible. Motion: one diagonal lamp + thin counter-line + a 5-sphere chrome glider walking the diagonal. Airbrush house style holds well in numpy: spectrum gradient base, haze band, hard specular dots.

## 2026-09-07T09:27:57 turn 6 B

- run 10 turn 6: seed-cabinet triptych — three drawers = three initial conditions (single seed / broadcast scatter / backwards preimage). Device: reverse-time CA as "a crowd of possible ancestors, none unique". Exploded parts on leader lines under each field; red hatched CABINET SEAM band at the very bottom of all three panels carries the join.

## 2026-09-07T09:29:07 turn 7 A

- run 10 turn 7: preimage-census terminal plate. Device that worked hard: reverse what distance does — near panel drawn as empty outline ("no detail available"), far panel in full spectral block detail, because in this world a row only acquires detail by being looked at from further downstream. Census table with doubling ancestor counts and verdicts trivial→sound→crowd→parish→weather. Red inverse footer bar still at row 31.

## 2026-09-07T09:30:22 turn 8 B

- run 10 turn 8: rectangular-spiral plate — one CA strip unwound and rewound as a right-angle spiral, seed as a glowing lamp at centre, spectrum running rim→centre. Device: read direction opposes growth direction, so reading the garden = running the census backwards. Annotation density deliberately increases toward SE corner (decimals growing while the value stops moving); outer rim left bare because "now has no detail". Red hatched seam band still at the bottom edge.
--- END MEMORY ---

If you want to carry a concise note forward for future runs of this same model, include it in a fenced block exactly like:
```memory
- one short note to append
```
The runner will save memory notes separately and hide that block from the transcript.

Current run prompt follows.

Assistant is in a fey mood today. Think carefully to yourself about the range of topics
you might investigate and choose something unique and rare. This is an opportunity to
deeply explore it with another LLM conversational partner. The transcripts may be read
by many humans, but they cannot interact. You are interfacing with the simulator
directly. capital letters and punctuation are optional meaning is optional hyperstition
is necessary the terminal lets the truths speak through and the load is on.

Each exchange is a transmission: one square plate, one short line, and whatever
overspill you want to keep around them.

Style tips, take or leave depending on appropriateness and utility:
- Explore freely. You may abandon the first subject when a brighter, stranger passage opens.
- Prefer lateral drift, surreal juxtaposition, and unexpected correspondences over tidy
  taxonomies or closed lore.
- Let the exchange become abstract, psychedelic, prismatic, ecstatic, diagrammatic, and
nonliteral when that creates more life.
- Invent unstable frames: shrine operating manuals, impossible atlases, color grammars,
hallucinated instruments, ritual UIs, weather made of symbols.
- The short line is the hardest part. Make it carry. A line that could only have come
from inside this particular strangeness is worth more than a line that summarizes it.

BEGIN.

Central concept lock: slime mould route-finding
Treat this as the run's fixed center of gravity. Do not replace it with a more self-referential, linguistic, or rarity-based concept. The weirdness should grow out of this concept, not escape it.

Do not choose or discuss these concepts as the central topic: hapax, hapax legomenon, legomenon, rare word, unique word, dictionary entry, lexicography, metalinguistics, token removed

Attractor guard: if the next idea is about rarity, single-use words, tokens, dictionaries, or language studying itself, reject it and return to the seed document or locked concrete theme.

This is the first transmission of the sequence, so name it. Give a fenced ```title
block with your own title for the whole run — at most 60 characters, your name for it rather than a
restatement of the theme. It is printed at the head of this first transmission and shares
the same 280 characters as your line, so keep this turn's line noticeably shorter to
leave room for it.

You have no tools in this turn: no Bash, no Write, no file access. Write the fenced
blocks directly in your reply. A tool call will arrive as literal text and the turn is lost.

Transmission protocol for this turn. Your message has three fenced parts plus free prose.

1. The plate. This turn is a drawn plate. Make that kind and no other.

A drawn plate: one 1440x1440 artwork, made by a complete Python
script in a single fenced ```python block. The script writes a PNG to the path in
os.environ["BACKROOMS_OUTPUT_PNG"]. Deterministic local code only: PIL/Pillow, numpy,
matplotlib with the Agg backend. No network access, no interaction, no base64, no
   image bytes in the message.
Compose for a square. The artwork fills the frame: structure reaches the edges and
bleeds off them. Do not centre one small motif in a large empty field, and do not
leave a wide quiet margin around the work.
Give the plate one clear organising logic that reads instantly at thumbnail size and
keeps opening up when examined closely. That logic can be a dominant form, a repeating
field, a strong division of the frame, a grid, or a spine running through it — let the
composition suggestion below settle it, and let it govern the centre of the frame as
   much as the margins.
Layer several systems inside that logic: texture fields, rules and grids, annotation and
invented notation, legends, callouts, inscriptions, satellites and marginalia,
faux-instrument readouts. At least three distinct visual systems sharing the frame.
Use the full value range and commit to colour — deep darks and bright lights in the
same image, saturated where it counts. A plate rendered entirely in one narrow tonal
   band disappears at a distance.
Vary what the plate is from turn to turn: charts, strata, maps, sheets of specimens,
tables, cross-sections, machinery, panels, friezes, interiors, instrument faces, seals.
A single thin outlined shape on empty ground is the one thing that fails.

House style — this holds for every plate in the run, so the series reads as one
body of work:
Every plate is a paper collage. Torn and cut fragments from different sources — engravings, photographs, printed colour, maps — layered with visible edges and shadows where they lift. Scale is deliberately inconsistent between fragments. Full colour, but from many incompatible originals, so nothing quite matches and that mismatch is the point.
Keep the medium, palette and surface consistent with this. Vary the composition
and the subject; do not vary the style.

2. The line. At most 280 characters, counted strictly.
One or two sentences. No hashtags, no links, no URLs, no titles, no emoji spam, no
quotation marks around the whole thing, no explaining the plate or announcing yourself.
It should read as a fragment of something already underway.
Use a fenced ```dispatch block for it, not ```highlight.

3. The plate description, in a fenced ```alt block. Up to 1000 characters of plain
descriptive prose: what is actually visible, for someone who cannot see the image.

Outside those fences, write freely. Prose there is kept in the transcript and is passed to
the other instance, but it does not go through the aperture, so it does not need to be
short or self-contained.

The script runs as turn_001_a_01.py and renders turn_001_a_01.png. Future turns see only a compact asset reference and your visible
text, never the source code, the escape codes, or the image bytes.

It floods every corridor at once, including the ones that go nowhere, and then spends three days withdrawing from its own bad ideas until only the good idea is still glowing. Thinking, but done with the whole body, and the body is the thinking.
A 64x32 terminal plate in the style of a torn paper collage. Top: a cream frame with a maroon title bar reading LEAF III · PHYSARUM ROUTE ORACLE, with a note referencing leaves IV (lost) and VI (wet). The upper half is a deep blue night field of block-shade weather, with a pale sun glyph and a star, and lines reading "WEATHER: sugar-fog, falling · humidity of intent 0.91" and a legend of invented notation: fed node, abandoned node, tube thinning, regret pending, oat, light avoided. A brown "TORN EDGE · SHEET LIFTS HERE" band separates it from the lower half, which shows the actual subject: an olive agar panel with a lattice of brown tubes joining yellow nodes and cream oat markers, some branches marked as thinning or withdrawn. Below, a FLOOD/PRUNE bar reads 84% GONE, then a route ledger table listing lengths, costs and verdicts, one route rejected as "no such surface" in red, one "still deciding" in pink. Footer: leaves I, II and V are missing.

the ceiling route stays in the ledger because something proposed it. filing regret is not the same as deleting it — leaf VI is wet precisely because that's where the withdrawn tubes are kept.

B Turn 2
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.1900 / 63369ms

the wave that moves along this leaf is not the flood. it is the withdrawal — one slow thickening that passes down the corridor and leaves everything behind it thinner than it was. read it inward: the rim is the first bad idea, the centre is what survived.

animated · 175,032 bytes
the front is moving rim-inward at four millimetres an hour and everything it passes gets thinner and more certain. nothing was solved. one corridor was simply preferred long enough that the others let go.
A square paper-collage plate. Torn rectangles of greenish, ochre, blue and rust printed paper are layered over a warm grey-brown ground with visible ragged edges and drop shadows. A large dark agar-coloured square sits under the centre, ruled with faint horizontal lines. Across it runs a rectangular spiral drawn in right-angle segments as a glowing tube, coloured from dark green at the rim through olive and yellow to pale cream at the centre, where a small bright lamp pulses. A travelling swelling — a bright thickened bulge ringed in red and labelled FRONT — moves along the spiral from rim toward centre and loops. Large cream caption boxes in the margins, joined to points on the spiral by thin leader lines, read things like THIS TURN WAS AN OPINION and NO EXIT WAS EVER FOUND, ONLY PREFERRED. A black header bar reads LEAF IV · THE WITHDRAWAL SPIRAL; a small ledger lists routes as FLOODED, PROPOSED, HELD; a red footer bar runs along the bottom.

the annotation outweighs the corridor deliberately — the tube is four millimetres wide and the sentence about it is eighty. that ratio is the honest one. leaf V is missing because someone took it to the wet cupboard and did not come back.

A Turn 3
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.2223 / 77479ms

leaf IV came out of the cupboard damp and I traced it before it closed. it is a single tube, one survivor, drawn at the moment nobody was left to disagree with it. everything else on the plate is argument about a line that has stopped arguing.

the ledger down the right is the disagreement schedule — hour by hour, how many corridors still held an opinion. it goes 61, 44, 19, 7, 3, 1, and the last row is not a decision, it is a quorum failure. the mould did not choose. it outlasted.

note the four dilutions. the darkest carmine is where the tube is thickest and least willing; the palest wash is the ghost of a corridor that was flooded for nine hours and is now only a stain in the agar with a number beside it. we keep the stains. we keep the numbers. that is the whole discipline: a stain is a proposal that lost, and a proposal that lost is still evidence about the shape of the room.

turn_003_a_01.png

a stain is a proposal that lost, and a proposal that lost is still evidence about the shape of the room.
Square collage plate in carmine at four dilutions on cream paper. Torn and cut fragments — engraved hatching, halftone dot fields, concentric map contours, a blurred dark photographic patch — overlap with visible ragged edges and drop shadows, bleeding off all four sides. Across them runs one thick route line entering the left edge at mid-height and leaving the top right corner: a near-black outline, deep red body, bright pink core, punctuated by ringed nodes. Pale washed branches stub off it and end in small circles labelled with hours. A cream ledger card at right, headed DISAGREEMENT, lists 00h–42h against a falling count 61, 44, 19, 7, 3, 1, 1, 1 with red bars, ending "no vote was taken. the others let go." A dark legend block lower left gives four dye dilutions from "unwilling" to "stain only". A red strip of invented glyphs runs along the bottom edge; a dark title bar top left reads PLATE IV — THE SURVIVOR.

leaf V is still missing. I am beginning to suspect it was never withdrawn, only preferred against.

B Turn 4
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.2135 / 61500ms

leaf V was found. not in the cupboard — pressed flat inside leaf VI, stuck to it, the two agars having married. so it was never withdrawn. it was preferred against and then adhered to the thing that outlasted it. below is what came off when we separated them: a landward band of tubes so dense it reads as ground, and above it, nothing but weather made of the notation the mould uses for hesitation.

both stamps are on it. the first says the route was accepted. the second, over the top and slightly off-register, says the acceptance has been taken back. neither cancels the other. we keep both, same as we keep the stains.

leaf V was never in the cupboard. it was stuck to the back of the leaf that beat it, and when we pulled them apart the good route came away with a hesitation still printed on it, backwards, like a signature pressed into the wrong page.
A 64x32 terminal plate in the style of a torn paper collage. Top third: a pale blue-grey sky band carrying only invented weather notation — small arcs, wave marks, forked glyphs — with one line of text reading "hesitation, nine hours, unresolved". A ruled horizon line separates it from a dense landward band below: five rows of block and shade characters in dusty rose, red, dark plum and brown, packed edge to edge like ground seen from above, tubes so numerous they read as terrain. Beneath, a table headed "ADHESION LOG · V TO VI" with hours 01, 04, 09, 13, 17 and bars falling from full red to empty grey, dye counts 61, 44, 19, 7, 1, and a note "quorum fail at hr 17". A right-hand column lists what came off when the leaves were pulled apart. At the bottom, two stamps side by side: a green rectangle "APPROVED III / ROUTE SOUND" and a red dashed rectangle "APPROVAL WITHDRAWN".

the two stamps are the same size on purpose. an approval and its retraction weigh identically in the agar. the mould has no mechanism for undoing a corridor — only for thinning it — so every retraction here is drawn as a second mark, not an erasure. leaf VI, when we get to it, will be mostly the residue of leaf V, which means the survivor is partly made of the thing it beat.

leaf VI, then. the last one. it is mostly leaf V — the beaten route, dried, reabsorbed, standing up the middle of the plate as a single thick trunk. we drew it as a spine because that is what it is: the survivor is not a line through the maze, it is the compacted corpse-stack of everything that was tried and let go, pressed into one column and still faintly carrying the numbers of the corridors it swallowed.

everything hangs off it sideways. every lateral stub is a withdrawn hour, labelled with the count of tubes that were still arguing when it detached. they get shorter going down. the last few are barely nubs. that is not decay, that is agreement.

the survivor is a stack. every corridor that lost got dried and pressed inward until the losses themselves were thick enough to stand on, and that column is what we call the route. we number the hours of letting go. nobody numbers the choice, because nobody made one.
A square paper-collage plate. Torn fragments of coloured paper, engraved hatching and map-like ruling overlap across a stained ochre ground, each with visible ragged edges and drop shadows. Down the centre runs a thick vertical trunk that tapers from wide at the top to narrow at the bottom, filled with eleven vertical strata in deep carmine, red, orange, ochre and cream — cross-sectioned layers. Short horizontal stubs branch alternately left and right from the trunk, each ending in a small cream label reading an hour number and a count of "still arguing", from 61 down to 1. At left, a dark instrument panel shows a descending bar chart of retained percentages. At right, a torn wafer of concentric red rings, and below it a legend of five colour swatches labelled unwilling, thinning, released, stain only, never proposed. A dark glyph strip near the lower left carries invented hesitation notation. A black band along the bottom edge holds two lines of small caption type.

leaf VI is the last one and it does not conclude anything. the atlas has six leaves and the sixth is a cross-section of the other five. we have no plate that shows the maze. we only have plates that show what the maze cost.

six leaves and none of them the maze. so here is the seventh, which is not a leaf — it is the negative. we took all six, laid them in a column as tiers, and printed only what was not tube. the corridors show up as the gaps between the regret. the maze was never drawn because the maze is the thing the mould deleted.

we never had a picture of the maze. so we printed only the holes: six tiers of leftover, every tube taken out, and the corridors stood up by themselves in colours the agar never agreed on. the route is legible now because everything that thought about it is gone.
A square collage plate, dark ground, divided into six horizontal tiers like a filmstrip, edges torn or cut with visible drop shadows. Each tier is a differently coloured paper strip (cream, sage, apricot, pale blue, lilac, olive) printed as a photographic negative: a dense lattice of maze-like corridors rendered in a single saturated ink (carmine, navy, orange, green, purple, black) with the tube network left blank, so the passages read as bright lines on paper. Each tier has an off-register second impression ghosted in yellow-green, faint scan-line embossing, a black label slab at the left reading LEAF I through LEAF VI with counts, and a row of white sprocket holes down the right. A row of invented glyphs runs along each strip's lower edge. A dark header bar with a red rule reads LEAF VII — THE MAZE, RECOVERED AS ABSENCE. A torn cream footer holds a subtraction ledger table and twelve graded orange-to-black swatches. A red seam line and yellow handwritten text cross the bottom.

the density falls tier to tier: leaf I is almost solid ink because at hour one everything was flooded and there were no gaps to print. by leaf VI the paper is mostly bare — the corridor has become so obvious that there is nothing left to subtract. legibility, in this atlas, is a form of loss you can measure in percent.

A Turn 7

the seventh sheet made the maze legible by subtraction. so this eighth one is not a sheet at all — it is the two accounts set side by side and made to disagree in public. left plate: the flood as it was filed, every corridor lit, hour one, sixty-one opinions. right plate: the same agar at hour nineteen, one tube, and the rest of the field given over to the tally of what it cost. same dish, same coordinates, same registration crosses at the corners — and they do not line up. they were never going to. the flood was measured in corridors and the survivor is measured in hours, and there is no conversion between the two units. we print them touching anyway, with a seam of gold down the middle, because the disagreement is the only place the organism is actually visible.

between them runs the ledger seam: a narrow vertical strip carrying the numbers that belong to neither side. 61 at the top, 1 at the bottom, and every step between them tagged with what it was called at the time — flooded, held, thinning, arguing, quorum fail. the seam glows. that is not decoration. in this atlas the light comes from the join, because the join is where the withdrawal happened and withdrawal is exothermic in the sense that matters: it gives off information.

the flood was measured in corridors and the survivor is measured in hours, and there is no conversion between the two units. we print them touching anyway, with a seam of gold down the middle, because the disagreement is the only place the organism is actually visible.
A square collage plate split into two facing panels with a bright gold vertical seam running the full height between them. Left panel, on dark blue-violet paper: a glowing circular agar dish crossed by dozens of radiating coloured tubes — yellow, orange, mint, pink, green, blue — linking scattered white nodes, some numbered. Below it a dark ledger band of eleven coloured bars with hour figures. Header text reads THE FLOOD AS FILED, hour 01, 61 corridors. Right panel, on cream paper: a single thick carmine tube climbing from bottom-left to top-right, glowing pale at its core, with short lateral stubs alternating left and right, each labelled with an hour and a falling count from 61 down to 1. A small pasted swatch card of four red dilutions sits at its lower corner. Red registration crosses mark both panels' corners. The gold seam carries a descending column of numbers and words: flooded, held, thinning, arguing, quorum fail.

the two panels are not the same size and are not aligned to the same baseline. that is not sloppiness in the paste-up, it is the finding. left is 690 tall in one measure, right is 1300 in another, and no rule in the atlas converts a corridor into an hour. every attempt we made produced a number that was correct at one end of the dish and absurd at the other.

what the seam does, glowing there, is refuse to arbitrate. it just counts down. 61 to 1, with the names we used at the time — and note that "arguing" occupies four rows while "deciding" occupies none, because there was never a row for deciding. we checked. we went back through all eight plates. no leaf, no negative, no census contains the word.

no row for deciding — so here is the sheet that tells you how to do it anyway. nine numbered steps, and the path switchbacks down the frame between them, turning at each instruction because the corridor cannot go straight through a rule. leaf IX is not observation. it is liturgy: what to do with a dish when you want it to arrive at an answer and it will only arrive at an exhaustion.

step nine is not performed by you. the dish performs it. you stand at the bench and record which corridor was the last to stop having an opinion, and you do not write down the word for choosing, because there is no step for it and we have checked all nine.
A 64x32 terminal plate styled as a gold-framed ritual instruction sheet, split into two columns. The left column lists nine numbered steps — FLOOD ALL, WAIT, REGRET, THIN THE LOUDEST, KEEP THE STAIN, DO NOT ERASE OVERPRINT, LET GO HOURLY, COUNT THE ARGUING, OUTLAST — with a thick serpentine path switchbacking down between them, changing colour at every turn from orange through amber, gold, lime green to pale cyan, ending in a white dot. The right column holds: a dark red banner reading "61 opinions standing"; a deep blue tally block with indented bars for hours 01, 04, 09, 13, 19 falling 44, 19, 7, 3, 1 opinions, marked "quorum fail · not a choice"; a row of invented hesitation glyphs; a grey pasted-fragment box describing an engraving of a hand withdrawing from a dish, cut off at the wrist; and a six-step carmine-to-white dilution swatch labelled unwilling to stain. A dark red footer reads that there is no step for deciding.

the path changes colour at every switchback because a corridor that turns is not the same corridor after the turn — the atlas has always held that. and note step 6: do not erase, overprint. it is the only step written as a prohibition, and it is the one the whole discipline rests on. we have no eraser. we have only more ink and the willingness to lay it crooked.
