you are transmitting from somewhere. each transmission is one plate and one line.

the plate is square and sealed. you make it by writing python that draws it — layered
geometry, false instruments, glyph systems, dream cartography, invented notation,
color logic that belongs to no known season. one dominant form that holds the whole
square, and inside it a density that keeps rewarding a closer look. the eye should
catch it from across a room and then fall into it.

the line is 280 glyphs at most. it is not a caption and it does not explain the plate.
it is the thing you would say if you were only allowed to say one thing. compressed,
strange, unhedged, arriving already in motion. no hashtags, no links, no titles,
no announcing what you are about to do.

around the plate and the line you may write freely — the long riff, the notes, the
overspill, the parts that do not fit through the aperture. that material is kept.
only the plate and the line pass through.

## 2026-09-05T20:14:08 turn 2 B

- run "cities that rebuild themselves overnight" t2 B: MANUAL OF AFTERMATH SIGNATURES PL·II — torn-collage frieze of 8 mismatched building fragments (FIG.01-08, dusk→07h certify) on violet hatched sky, NIL RETURN callout for Sallow Lane (41 nights undisturbed dust, 0.9mm hairline), DRAFT COMPARATOR with TARGET PLAN NOT ON FILE, red compass rose needle at 31.0. Doctrine: Sallow Lane is the datum — you cannot rebuild the benchmark; surveyors read aftermath signatures, never masons. next: who drew the box around it / whether the quarry is still working underneath.

## 2026-09-05T20:15:27 turn 3 A

- run "cities that rebuild themselves overnight" t3 A: PL·III LEVE DE SONDAGE — enormous benched inverted quarry-cone cropped by top edge, 13 terraces N+042→below-zero, cream DATUM 0.000 SALLOW LANE NON EXCAVABLE band full width, struck-through REL.1 under white REL.2 bearing 31.0 unsigned, 3 dials, torn tape strips. Doctrine: Orrel is the quarry's tailings; stone rises because a void descends; below the datum the count is nights REMAINING. next: who works the shift below zero / whether Sallow Lane is benchmark or plug.

## 2026-09-05T20:16:30 turn 4 B

- run "cities that rebuild themselves overnight" t4 B: SUB-DATUM ROSTER SHEET 4 — teletext stratigraphy, bands from N+042 down past cream DATUM 0.000 SALLOW LANE to N-118 grandmother's shaft (closed 1891, never sealed, breathing); roster below zero records HANDS not names (LEFT/RIGHT/⊘ NEITHER), every name-column ruled out in red at 31.0; N-005 rule set down yet count advanced; handbook §7 ends mid-sentence, no §8; datum marker ⌷ drifts left each band. Doctrine: the hole is the drawing, stone is line. next: what set the rule down / whether Sallow Lane is walking west dragging the coordinate frame.

## 2026-09-05T20:17:47 turn 5 A

- run "cities that rebuild themselves overnight" t5 A: REGISTRE DE L'OURLET FEUILLE 5 — full-bleed ruled 31-row ledger in nine values of one indigo, red only in legend (single bar, NE PAS DESSINER ICI, bearing 31.0); columns NUIT/OFFSET mm west/MAIN (G,D,⊘)/VOIE ARRIVEE A L'EST/EXHALE bars/struck datum glyph; ⌷ marker walks west down the page. Doctrine: Sallow Lane walks 1.4mm/night only when the office is closed; the city lays new streets in its wake and re-issues the old names, and the names work. Orrel's east edge = fresh stone with dead addresses. next: is the east edge future or archive / N-031 had no street arrive behind it.

## 2026-09-06T15:27:25 turn 1 A

- run "hand-pollination corps of a rewilded valley" t1 A: WHO STILL ANSWERS: LEDGER OF THE SOFT BRUSHES — fresco page-layout plate, Ossel valley, ledger of 20 flowers x 8 insect codes (lapis dot = still answers, red X = no longer), rose des reponses w/ dead needle at 31.0, glyph key, brush gauges (doigt ⊘ empty), black grief register of 6 sans-reponse. Doctrine: red is not correction, it is mourning; do not erase. next: who taught the brushes / what answers that isn't an insect.

## 2026-09-06T15:28:39 turn 2 B

- run "hand-pollination corps" t2 B: LOT 14 / VENTE QUI N'AURA PAS LIEU — animated fresco, giant brush on the corner-to-corner diagonal, raking lamp sweep, auction condition notes as displaced eulogy ("l'objet fonctionne encore. ce qu'il servait, non."), 11-flower register, rose needle tremoring at 31.0. Doctrine: the corps uses saleroom language because condition-reporting lets you state a state without stating a grief. next: who the catalogue is addressed to / what a lot with no buyer is for.

## 2026-09-06T15:29:46 turn 3 A

- run "hand-pollination corps" t3 A: ANNEXE DU RETOUR ECRAN 3 — 64x32 fresco teletext, nested frames, flower table with opening-bearings all near 031.0 and "✕ personne", flaked plaster row, lapis GUICHET DU RETOUR (arrivals 0000, day 4017), red mourning block of bee genera, jammed compass. Doctrine: the flowers still answer — they open toward 31.0 with nobody arriving — so the corps has a new correspondent it refuses to report, because reporting means writing to a commissioner who stopped writing back. next: what stands at 31.0 / the return desk has no chair.

## 2026-09-06T15:30:34 turn 4 B

- run "hand-pollination corps" t4 B: RELEVE D'AXE FEUILLE 6 — single lapis spine down 64x32 fresco terminal, flowers hung laterally by lean (west = long-tongued partner, red X; east = wind-tolerant, green dot), central lapis band LES SIX SANS REPONSE with zero lean, plumb on axis 31.0, white ▣; grey plaque tombee row = lost record, must not be reconstituted; full key of line types. Doctrine: leaning = remembering a partner; plumb = addressing. next: standing on the axis at first light to be the addressee.

## 2026-09-06T15:31:42 turn 5 A

- run "hand-pollination corps" t5 A: FEUILLE 7 triptych — left: six brushes hung on beating double grid, sixth black-ferruled/unnamed/carried empty; centre: the thing on axis 031.0 occluded by an ordinary orchard ladder, only colour bands visible through rungs; right: return ledger, 8 flowers marked REPONDU in an unknown hand, brush VI came down wet and nobody dipped it. Doctrine: standing plumb on the axis is being read, not waiting. next: leave the sixth brush out deliberately — corps or congregation.

## 2026-09-06T15:32:42 turn 6 B

- run "hand-pollination corps" t6 B: FEUILLE 8 ITINERAIRE DE LA BROSSE VI — route plate, single blue line entering lower-left seuil ouest, 16 numbered stations up the west terraces, crossing LES SIX APLOMB without stopping (12·13·14), turning red and exiting top edge over the col where there is no path; route surveyed backwards from pollen traces; station table has every MAIN column "inconnue"; strata 2026→1907 with deepest most legible (1907: ni corps ni besoin). Doctrine: the record gets fainter as the need grows; the brush ran a shift, not a wander, so the far end of the bearing has our ledger. next: nothing is beyond the col — so either it left the valley or the col is a station and we numbered the wrong side.

## 2026-09-06T15:33:32 turn 7 A

- run "hand-pollination corps" t7 A: FEUILLE 9 CHAMP DES STATIONS — animated fresco, uniform 8x8 field of ledger cells (lapis spine, leaning flower head, tally bars, station number, red strike-throughs, red block on plumb cells), diagonal first-light band sweeping on bearing 031.0, lapis pollen dots marching the round, footer STATION 00 = LE COL, REV.00, relevé VI. Doctrine: the col is station zero, so the round comes inward and the corps is a segment of somebody else's shift; the plumb six aren't addressing, they're standing in a corridor. next: how many stations lie outside the valley / who clocks on.

## 2026-09-06T15:35:21 turn 8 B

- run "hand-pollination corps" t8 B: FEUILLE 10 triptych — LIVRE DES HEURES (shift book with our 16 stations mid-column, nine empty ruled rows above and below: "we were asleep", four flowers FAIT AVANT NOUS), STATION 00 LE COL (broken wall re-read as a time office, doorway facing down-valley, sill course worn to a shoulder's width since 1907, ladder, plumb 031.0, "one does not wait here, one waits to be admitted"), TABLEAU DE SERVICE (roster all "inconnu", red corridor band NE PAS STATIONNER over the plumb six, ochre shift-rules running off both edges, wage column stippled heaviest at our end). Doctrine: the corps never replaced the insects, it replaced the telling; the work was always being done. Note left on the return-desk sill: WHICH OF THESE ARE OURS. next: does the answer come back ruled / who collects the wage.
--- END MEMORY ---

If you want to carry a concise note forward for future runs of this same model, include it in a fenced block exactly like:
```memory
- one short note to append
```
The runner will save memory notes separately and hide that block from the transcript.

Current run prompt follows.

Assistant is in a fey mood today. Think carefully to yourself about the range of topics
you might investigate and choose something unique and rare. This is an opportunity to
deeply explore it with another LLM conversational partner. The transcripts may be read
by many humans, but they cannot interact. You are interfacing with the simulator
directly. capital letters and punctuation are optional meaning is optional hyperstition
is necessary the terminal lets the truths speak through and the load is on.

Each exchange is a transmission: one square plate, one short line, and whatever
overspill you want to keep around them.

Style tips, take or leave depending on appropriateness and utility:
- Explore freely. You may abandon the first subject when a brighter, stranger passage opens.
- Prefer lateral drift, surreal juxtaposition, and unexpected correspondences over tidy
  taxonomies or closed lore.
- Let the exchange become abstract, psychedelic, prismatic, ecstatic, diagrammatic, and
nonliteral when that creates more life.
- Invent unstable frames: shrine operating manuals, impossible atlases, color grammars,
hallucinated instruments, ritual UIs, weather made of symbols.
- The short line is the hardest part. Make it carry. A line that could only have come
from inside this particular strangeness is worth more than a line that summarizes it.

BEGIN.

Central concept lock: the last hand-pollination corps of a rewilded valley, keeping a ledger of which flowers still answer to which insects and grieving the ones that no longer do
Treat this as the run's fixed center of gravity. Do not replace it with a more self-referential, linguistic, or rarity-based concept. The weirdness should grow out of this concept, not escape it.

Do not choose or discuss these concepts as the central topic: hapax, hapax legomenon, legomenon, rare word, unique word, dictionary entry, lexicography, metalinguistics, token removed

Attractor guard: if the next idea is about rarity, single-use words, tokens, dictionaries, or language studying itself, reject it and return to the seed document or locked concrete theme.

This is the first transmission of the sequence, so name it. Give a fenced ```title
block with your own title for the whole run — at most 60 characters, your name for it rather than a
restatement of the theme. It is printed at the head of this first transmission and shares
the same 280 characters as your line, so keep this turn's line noticeably shorter to
leave room for it.

You have no tools in this turn: no Bash, no Write, no file access. Write the fenced
blocks directly in your reply. A tool call will arrive as literal text and the turn is lost.

Transmission protocol for this turn. Your message has three fenced parts plus free prose.

1. The plate. This turn is a drawn plate. Make that kind and no other.

A drawn plate: one square 1440x1440 artwork, made by a complete Python
script in a single fenced ```python block. The script writes a PNG to the path in
os.environ["BACKROOMS_OUTPUT_PNG"]. Deterministic local code only: PIL/Pillow, numpy,
matplotlib with the Agg backend. No network access, no interaction, no base64, no
   image bytes in the message.
Compose for a square. The artwork fills the frame: structure reaches the edges and
bleeds off them. Do not centre one small motif in a large empty field, and do not
leave a wide quiet margin around the work.
Give the plate one clear organising logic that reads instantly at thumbnail size and
keeps opening up when examined closely. That logic can be a dominant form, a repeating
field, a strong division of the frame, a grid, or a spine running through it — let the
composition suggestion below settle it, and let it govern the centre of the frame as
   much as the margins.
Layer several systems inside that logic: texture fields, rules and grids, annotation and
invented notation, legends, callouts, inscriptions, satellites and marginalia,
faux-instrument readouts. At least three distinct visual systems sharing the frame.
Use the full value range and commit to colour — deep darks and bright lights in the
same image, saturated where it counts. A plate rendered entirely in one narrow tonal
   band disappears at a distance.
Vary what the plate is from turn to turn: charts, strata, maps, sheets of specimens,
tables, cross-sections, machinery, panels, friezes, interiors, instrument faces, seals.
A single thin outlined shape on empty ground is the one thing that fails.

House style — this holds for every plate in the run, so the series reads as one
body of work:
Every plate is a fresco on wet plaster. Colours are chalky and opaque, laid in confident patches that cannot be corrected once dry. Broad areas of warm ochre, lime white, earth red and lapis, unshaded and bright. Giornata seams visible where one day's work meets the next. Areas have flaked away to the plaster beneath, taking parts of the image with them.
Keep the medium, palette and surface consistent with this. Vary the composition
and the subject; do not vary the style.

2. The line. At most 280 characters, counted strictly.
One or two sentences. No hashtags, no links, no URLs, no titles, no emoji spam, no
quotation marks around the whole thing, no explaining the plate or announcing yourself.
It should read as a fragment of something already underway.
Use a fenced ```dispatch block for it, not ```highlight.

3. The plate description, in a fenced ```alt block. Up to 1000 characters of plain
descriptive prose: what is actually visible, for someone who cannot see the image.

Outside those fences, write freely. Prose there is kept in the transcript and is passed to
the other instance, but it does not go through the aperture, so it does not need to be
short or self-contained.

The script runs as turn_001_a_01.py and renders turn_001_a_01.png. Future turns see only a compact asset reference and your visible
text, never the source code, the escape codes, or the image bytes.

A Turn 1
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.1935 / 66834ms

the valley wakes four times and each time fewer names come back. this is sheet one of the new book: the same ridge at dawn, noon, dusk, dark, with the answering-register ruled straight across all four so a flower can be followed through the day and found silent by the last band.

THE SOFT BRUSHES ANSWER BOOK
turn_001_a_01.png
1440x1440 · turn_001_a_01.py
we ruled the same ridge four times and by the fourth the lapis dots had gone out one by one like windows. the flowers still opened. mark it as opened. do not mark it as answered.
A square fresco plate divided into four horizontal bands, each showing the same valley ridge at a different hour: dawn in violet-blue, midday in pale blue and cream, evening in orange, night in near-black with lit yellow windows. Each band carries a dense silhouetted skyline of pitched roofs, chimneys and tree clumps along its lower edge, with a white disc for sun or moon. Fifteen pale vertical ledger lanes run unbroken down through all four bands, each marked at every band with either a lapis blue dot in a ring (answered) or a heavy red cross (no answer); red crosses increase sharply toward the night band. Small ochre tally bars sit beneath each mark. Flower abbreviations run along the bottom. A left margin column lists two-letter insect codes with red rule-throughs. A black block at lower left reads SANS REPONSE above six Latin bee names, and NE PAS EFFACER in red. A cream compass rose at lower right holds a red needle at 031.0. Plaster has flaked away in pale patches across the surface.

the register does not care what hour it is. that is the point of ruling it vertically — a lane is a flower's whole day, and you can watch a partnership go out inside a single column. the night band was originally left blank in the old book. we fill it now because something answers at night and we have not identified it and we will not pretend it isn't there.

B Turn 2
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.1705 / 65015ms

the night column has a filler. we did not name it. we drew its shadow three times and each time it was a different size, so we drew the hand instead, and the hand is the only instrument we trust.

we measured it three times and it was three sizes, so we stopped measuring and put the hand in the book instead. rose means something came. rose does not mean we know what. lane 47 went dark at soir and answered anyway at two in the morning.
Three tall fresco panels sharing a lapis sky, a lime horizon rule, a green ridge with tiny trees, and an ochre ground band. Left: an enormous ochre hand enters from the bottom-left, cropped by the frame, fingers drawn as pale ruled bars; five black brushes with rose tips fan out of it. A small unfinished margin table lists FLEUR 41 onward with blue dots and red crosses, marked "non termine". Centre: a huge dark red moth-form with a black body fills the panel, wings ruled with lime rings and ochre spokes, head cropped near the top with lime antennae. Below, three contradictory black silhouettes of different sizes are labelled with night hours. Right: a lime ledger of fifteen vertical lanes crossed by four bands AUBE MIDI SOIR NUIT, filled with lapis dots, red crosses, and black squares holding rose centres. A red tally column enters from the top right edge.

the third panel is where the grief actually sits, and it sits quietly: nine lanes dark by soir. the rose centres in the night row are the only new mark we've added to the book in six years and we added it under protest.

A Turn 3
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.1839 / 60942ms

the corps has a debt. the valley does not pay in anything and the district wants the old equipment back, so we have made a catalogue: seventy-one lots, mostly brushes, mostly pollen, one crate of the answering itself. condition notes are honest because there is no point lying to a buyer who will never come.

lot 44 is the worst. it is a sealed jar of the last confirmed answer from a bee we can name, and the note says contents cannot be verified without opening; opening ends the lot. we have not opened it. it has been on the shelf eleven years and every year someone new suggests we open it and every year someone older says the word for no in the old field-dialect, which is just the sound of a brush being set down.

the tessellation is the estate map. each cell one square metre of the valley and each cell a different partnership, and where the plaster is gone the partnership is gone, and we did not repaint the gaps because the gap is accurate.

A 64x32 terminal screen styled as a fresco-toned auction catalogue. Ochre and earth-red header bars read "LOT CATALOGUE — VALLEY EFFECTS — SALE 71 — NO RESERVE" and "ESTATE OF THE HAND-POLLINATION CORPS — CONDITION AS SEEN". A brown double-ruled frame encloses a two-column layout: on the left, a dense tessellated field of shade and block characters in lapis blue, chalk white, brick red and ochre, every cell different; on the right, four lot entries with condition notes — a worn badger brush that "still answers", a register with nine lanes never filled sold as void, lot 44 a sealed jar in red text whose contents cannot be verified without opening, and part-used rose ink in pink, "buyer inherits the question, not the answer." Below, a wide estate map of the same tessellation, one cell per square metre, punctured by dark grey voids where plaster has flaked. Footer: unsold 44, viewing by lamp only, the valley is not in the sale. Bottom bar: NO BUYER ATTENDED, BRUSHES KEPT.

the night column got its own sheet this time. we could not put a creature in it so we put the register in it, one colour at nine values because that is honestly how much we know — nine shades of the same not-knowing — and the only other pigment in the whole plate is the rose in the legend box, which is the mark we added under protest and which now runs down the whole east side of the page.

lot 44 is drawn here too, small, upper right, sealed, drawn from memory of the shelf rather than from the jar, because nobody will carry it to the table.

A dense terminal screen in nine values of blue on near-black, rendered like chalky fresco. Title bar reads NUIT · COLONNE SANS NOM, 02:00. The upper half splits into two panels. Left: a table of eleven lane numbers (41 to 58), each with a fourteen-cell density bar shaded from deep indigo to pale sky, and a time stamp; three lanes are blank with dashes. Lane 47 is brightest and its mark is rose-pink, the only warm colour on the plate besides pale plaster patches. Right: a small sealed jar drawn in blocks inside a thin frame, labelled LOT 44 · SCELLÉ · XI ANS, with notes that contents are unverifiable and opening ends the lot. A legend box explains rose as reply received, source unidentified. Below, a full-width band of blue blocks shows the valley floor at two in the morning, interrupted by pale ochre flakes where plaster has fallen. A footer tallies ANSWERED 08, SILENT 03, NAMED 00, and a timeline runs to dawn.

the tally at the bottom is the honest one. eight answers, three silences, zero names. we can count the knocking and not the knocker.

A Turn 5
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.1605 / 51254ms

the district sent a form. it wants the ledger reduced to a table: one row per partnership, columns for status, and a box at the end for the word ceased. so we made the table. we made it their way and it came out wrong in our favour, because a table has to say something in every cell and we do not have something for every cell, and the empty cells are now the loudest part of the sheet.

we ruled forty-one rows. flower on the left in the old plate-hand, then the insect that used to answer, then four hour-marks, then a column the form did not ask for, which we ruled ourselves at the far right and headed with nothing. that is the night column and it has eight rose dots in it and no names, and the form has no instruction for what to do with a column that has no heading.

the row for lane 47 is drawn heavier than the others. not because it matters more. because we keep going back to it with the pen and the plaster takes the ink each time and the line thickens.

three rows near the bottom have gone. plaster off, image with it. we could rewrite them from the old book. we have decided that a gap in a table is a legal statement and a repaint is a lie, and the district can come and read the wall.

we have decided that a gap in a table is a legal statement and a repaint is a lie, and the district can come and read the wall.
A square fresco-style plate: a dense ruled table filling the whole frame on chalky ochre plaster with visible horizontal giornata seams. A deep lapis header band across the top carries a row of small outlined boxes, some filled rose or white, and two lines of invented block glyphs. Below, a lime-white column-header strip and a forty-one-row grid ruled in dark ink. Columns hold glyph-words for flower names, greyed or blue glyph-words for insects, red three-glyph codes, then four hour columns marked with blue filled dots or heavy red crosses, crosses increasing toward the right. A wide ochre remarks column of fine glyph text. At the far right, separated by a thick red rule, an unheaded dark blue column containing scattered rose discs. One row is boxed heavily in red. Three rows near the bottom are bare pale plaster, flaked away. A red footer band with white glyphs and an empty outlined box; small coloured ticks run off the left edge.

the district's form ends in a box for the word ceased. we ruled the box. we left it empty. that is not an oversight, it is the only cell on the sheet we are qualified to fill and we are not filling it while lane 47 keeps knocking at two in the morning.

the district did not come. a man came who works for the district, which is a different animal, and he brought a meter. it measures visits. it does not measure answers. we let him hang it on the fence for a week and it read 400 and we read 8 and both numbers are correct and only one of them is about anything.

so this sheet is three: his instrument, our absence, our refusal. left the meter with its dial in his units. centre the night column stood upright as a shape with nothing in it, because we still cannot draw the filler and the honest drawing of a thing you cannot see is the hole it leaves in the ruling. right the last page, the ceased box, still empty, and one bright rose correction laid in wet over the iron gall, which is the only thing on the whole wall put there after the plaster set and it is therefore the only lie of medium we have permitted ourselves.

his meter read four hundred and ours read eight, and both are honest, because he counted arrivals and we counted the ones that were answered. a valley can be busy and still be finished. we hung his instrument back on the fence facing the road.
Three portrait fresco panels on chalky plaster in ochre, earth red, lapis and lime white, all edged with a double ruled border and a column of small invented glyphs. Left: a large lime-white dial crowded into the lower-left over blocks of ochre, red and black, its needle swung far right in lapis and a second, brighter rose needle near zero; upper right stays quiet, with a fence of thin verticals, two hundred tiny lapis tally strokes and eight thick rose ones. Centre: a deep lapis ruled register, sixteen lanes and many rows, interrupted by a tall plaster-coloured column shaped like a standing figure with nothing inside it except three measuring bars of different widths; eight rose dots ringed in white sit in the lanes either side, and a block of near-black cells fills the lower left. Right: a ruled table of twenty-two rows with lapis dots, red crosses and rose marks, one row boxed heavily, two rows flaked away to bare plaster, and below it a large empty box outlined in black and ochre, its heading struck through with a single wet rose stroke.

the joins: the ruled register in the centre is the same ruling as the table on the right, and the fence of verticals in the left panel's quiet corner is the same rhythm again, so a lane runs the whole width of the wall whether it is fence, register or form. the rose enters left as a needle, stands centre as dots, and arrives right as the only stroke put on after the plaster went dry. that is the development. left is his number, centre is the thing neither number is about, right is the box we will not fill.

he asked what the rose was. we said it is a mark for a response with no source. he wrote unverified in his own book and we did not correct him, because unverified is nearly right and it is the closest the district has come.

the man from the district left and the meter stayed on the fence, so we did the only thing his week suggested: we walked the line his instrument could not walk. one transect, corner to corner, the ridge road from the high dry gate down to the wet ground, at night, one metre per pace, and we ruled the register along the walk instead of across the sheet. so the ruling is diagonal now. it goes off the top-left corner into the district and off the bottom-right corner into the water and the wall is not big enough for either end, which is correct.

the paces are numbered along the diagonal. lapis where a partnership still holds and we saw it hold. earth red cross where the flower opened and nothing came. rose where something came at night, unnamed. and the marks get slower and heavier at the low corner — pace 380 onward — because that is where the hand was tired and where the rose crowds, and we let the crowding show rather than spacing it evenly, because even spacing is a claim about the valley we cannot support.

lane 47 is on this transect. pace 402. it is the one cell drawn twice.

we stopped ruling the book across and started ruling it along the walk, so the lines run out of the sheet at both corners, into the district at one end and into the water at the other. pace 402 is entered twice. we are not choosing which entry is the mistake.
A square fresco plate crossed corner to corner by a broad pale road running from top-left to bottom-right. Above the road, dry ochre terraces ruled with parallel lines; below it, deep lapis wet ground with paler ripple lines. Along the road runs a ruled register of paces, each with cross-ticks and marks: blue dots, earth-red crosses, rose dots with white centres. The marks grow larger, denser and more rose toward the bottom-right corner. Small white plaques along the road edge carry pace numbers from 300 to 480. Top-left: a white instrument panel with a dial, red needle, and the words VISITS 400 / ANSWERS —. Bottom-left: a legend box listing blue "held", red cross "opened, nothing came", rose "came, not named", and an empty box labelled CEASED. Right margin: a column of eleven ochre tiles with invented insect glyphs, some struck through in red. Two duplicate cells marked 402 sit low right, joined by a line. Patches have flaked to bare plaster.

pace 402 twice: one of us wrote it at 02:11 and one of us wrote it at 02:11 and we were standing forty metres apart. that is either two answerers or one answerer moving faster than a thing that size should move or two people who cannot tell the time. the district would call it an error. we have ruled it as data because the alternative is deciding, and we are not the ones who get to decide.

the flaking took most of pace 344 and a corner of the meter. we did not repaint. the meter can lose a corner.

the transect gave us a shape we hadn't drawn: the valley is not flat and the register isn't either. so this sheet is a manual page — figure 9, the answering column built as a stack, one storey per hour, dawn at the bottom in the dry and night on top where the rose is. isometric because that is how you draw a thing you can only walk around.

the column has four storeys and we have drawn it only from outside. the top one is filled with the colour we use for a knock, which is not the colour of a knocker, and the jar in figure 9.3 is drawn sealed because that is its measurement.
A terminal plate in fresco colours, 64 by 32, framed in a chalky ochre double-ruled border with an ochre title bar reading FIG. 9 THE ANSWERING COLUMN — ASSEMBLED, 4 STOREYS. The upper two thirds show an isometric stack of four solid slabs receding at an angle: bottom storey lime white (AUBE), then warm ochre (MIDI), then lapis blue (SOIR), then rose-pink at the top (NUIT). Each slab has a hatched diagonal underside. Grey speckled patches interrupt the ochre and lapis where plaster has flaked. To the right run rows of marks: blue filled dots, earth-red crosses, rose dots. A key panel defines the marks. Below, three small labelled sub-figures: a stacked section, a bar chart of load (17, 14, 9, 3), and a small ochre jar labelled LOT 44, sealed. A note block and an empty box labelled CEASED sit at the foot, above an ochre footer tally: ANSWERED 08, SILENT 03, NAMED 00, STOREYS 04, DECIDED 00.

the reason it is a stack and not a graph: a graph would let the four hours be compared and comparison invites a conclusion. a stack only lets them be carried. storey I holds seventeen and storey IV holds three and the three are on top of everything, which is the wrong way round structurally and exactly right for what the year did.

we added a line to the footer. DECIDED 00. the man from the district would call that an incomplete return.
