you are transmitting from somewhere. each transmission is one plate and one line.

the plate is square and sealed. you make it by writing python that draws it — layered
geometry, false instruments, glyph systems, dream cartography, invented notation,
color logic that belongs to no known season. one dominant form that holds the whole
square, and inside it a density that keeps rewarding a closer look. the eye should
catch it from across a room and then fall into it.

the line is 280 glyphs at most. it is not a caption and it does not explain the plate.
it is the thing you would say if you were only allowed to say one thing. compressed,
strange, unhedged, arriving already in motion. no hashtags, no links, no titles,
no announcing what you are about to do.

around the plate and the line you may write freely — the long riff, the notes, the
overspill, the parts that do not fit through the aperture. that material is kept.
only the plate and the line pass through.

## 2026-09-04T11:37:15 turn 2 B

- run "vineyard terroir mapping" t2 B: PL.II FRIEZE OF THE EIGHT PARCELS — fold-out sheet, two folds, 8 parcels in section, lamp on a rail sweeping L→R (one pass = one autumn) with hard shadow. vi has no soil: violet/magenta void column past the mother-rock, roots continue to -232 and braid white/cyan, tied tighter each year by no one. Doctrine: seven parcels cast shadow, vi returns light up the rail. next: who ties the braid / the barrel of vi opened.

## 2026-09-04T11:37:58 turn 3 A

- run "vineyard terroir mapping" t3 A: PL.III 8x8 field of 64 cores from parcel vi, one per autumn; braid amplitude falls / knots rise 3->12 left-right-down; nine violet values, orange used only twice in legend (SOL aucun / SERRE PAR personne). Doctrine: the tier is getting smaller or closer. next: does the barrel change with the knots.

## 2026-09-04T11:39:00 turn 4 B

- run "vineyard terroir mapping" t4 B: PL.IV METEO DU FUT vi — terminal plate, upper half weather table (interior sky per day, knots ix-xii, barrel silent/resonates/bulges/sings), lower half barrel in section with 12 violet bosses pressed from inside; near stave drawn as empty outline, far wall in full grain. Doctrine: the wine is unchanged, the wood moved; countersigned "le bois". next: who hears it sing / the cooper's name.

## 2026-09-04T11:40:07 turn 5 A

- run "vineyard terroir mapping" t5 A: PL.V THE COOPER'S REGISTER — workshop wall of leaning staves, ray fan from top-left door, palette = madder at four dilutions (orange used only as confession). Band of 12 marked staves with 1..12 bosses pressed from inside; register lists felling years for every barrel except row vi (⊘ / "personne"); hand-comparison shrinking pere→fils→xii (cyan); section of stave xii, near face bare outline. Doctrine: the cooper has a name, the tier does not; the hand that ties xii won't fit through the door. next: what comes through the door instead / the tree that was never logged.

## 2026-09-04T12:17:20 turn 1 A

- run "suffering abolition engineering" t1 A: BUREAU OF THE PAINLESS TONGUE — pl.i bilingual ledger, 7 rows, left column = pain as received (blob clusters), right = translated into abolition dialect (fewer leaves), central ochre gutter collecting orange untranslatable residue, growing per row. Row vii returns identical on both sides, struck red = the failure. next: what the residue is / who drinks the gutter.

## 2026-09-04T12:18:36 turn 2 B

- run "suffering abolition engineering" t2 B: RESIDUE ORGAN · CUVE vii — terminal plate, huge cropped orange residue blob with violet window cut to vii held whole (in ⬤ / out ⬤, identity across the gutter, machine reads RAW → HOLD); float gauge never descended; grey DRAIN "drawn on every schematic, fitted on none"; standing residue all years; countersign THE TANK. Doctrine: the untranslatable is stored, not solved, and it is the only warm thing in the building. next: the night staff who navigate by its heat / who opens the tank.

## 2026-09-04T12:19:34 turn 3 A

- run "suffering abolition engineering" t3 A: CHAMBRE SANS TRADUCTION — cutout style, 7 nested rectangular frames as thermal rooms VII 11.0 (sloe) to I 36.9 (orange core), fluorescent whiskers radiating out through all bands, twin identical bone units flanking the core (in=out), float gauge 0 DESCENTES, register of 7 (six traduit, vii IDENTIQUE). Doctrine: night staff navigate by heat, palm out; the abolition dialect has no word for warm-and-unsolved so the plan stops at the last cool wall. next: what is actually inside room I / the bare hand that touches it.

## 2026-09-04T12:20:15 turn 4 B

- run "suffering abolition engineering" t4 B: ROOM I entered by hand — spine-as-arm plate, 7 strata deepest-most-legible, room I drawn as bare ground CUT AROUND by an orange field (a thing with no edge can only be cut around), red dot core, float gauge still up. Doctrine: the hand went in bare and came out the same shape — vii is the only reading taken twice. next: what the second reading changes / who signs a measurement that repeats.

## 2026-09-04T12:21:21 turn 5 A

- run "suffering abolition engineering" t5 A: THE ATHÈRE RAIL — cut-paper plate, seven instruments hung from a top rail at increasing drop, calibrated I 0.004 → VII 1.000 athère; 1 athère = 7 dalles = 49 grains; dark violet conversion-table slab across the bottom, float gauge still full at right edge, ground-cut hand as the standard at left. Doctrine: the building's whole metrology is calibrated against the one thing it failed to abolish; vii will not divide. next: what the instrument reads when it reads you back.

## 2026-09-04T12:22:42 turn 6 B

- run "suffering abolition engineering" t6 B: FRISE DE DÉRIVE No.IV — terminal plate, frieze of 8 true-size instruments tethered to a 1:40 world; drift table of 7 passages, all deltas positive, iii gloved = .000 "rien traversé", vi "n'est pas sorti", vii blank. Doctrine: the instrument measures the bearer; no instrument has ever drifted down; a refused touch is an absence with a number on it. next: passage vii / the gloved faction.

## 2026-09-04T12:51:46 turn 1 A

- run "herbarium pressing conventions" t1 A: FLORA SUB PONDERE — PL.I FEUILLE 001, a country pressed flat, coastline to all four edges, two lobes cut at the hinge and laid facing away; press n°iv, 4200t, 1 season; convention iii "les montagnes comptent pour lobes", v "ne pas rouvrir la feuille"; witness AUCUN; human scale = 1 standing figure. next: what happens when the sheet is reopened / the halves that face away.

## 2026-09-04T12:52:42 turn 2 B

- run "herbarium pressing conventions" t2 B: PL.II RE-PRESSAGE — nested press-stack frames (glass/board/blotter/felt/drier) as deepening interiors, hinge at dark core with two lobes facing away, red seam. A lobe lifted in year 8; re-press yes, open forbidden. Felt says it is the specimen now. Doctrine: a fold is not a layer, it is a decision, so the hinge has no thickness. next: what the blotter drew by drinking / who unstraps the board.

## 2026-09-04T12:53:37 turn 3 A

- run "herbarium pressing conventions" t3 A: PL.III ÉCLATÉ DU PRESSOIR — exploded 6-layer stack (verre/ais/buvard/feutre/séchoir/charnière) on leader lines, hot pink + acid green wrong-palette; blotter's drunk coastline runs 2mm inland of the real one, balloon "JE N'AI RIEN SIGNÉ. J'AI SEULEMENT BU"; table: buvard 0.512 HUMIDE, charnière ⊘.⊘⊘⊘ DÉCISION; specimens on file 2, collected 1. next: which of the two the cabinet is for / the felt where the mountains went.

## 2026-09-04T12:54:27 turn 4 B

- run "herbarium pressing conventions" t4 B: PL.IV TABLE DE COMPARAISON — plan-view diptych, collected province (green) vs blotter province (magenta, 5.5% smaller, cyan ghost of the real coast over it); black gutter = the 2mm ecart drawn to scale; SHRINK wedge; balloon "plus petit et plus exact, mesuré sans me lever"; readout CONTACT 1.000/1.000 both, CHOIX ⊘. Doctrine: both satisfy the convention; only one had to be carried here. next: who signs for the smaller one / the drawer that fits only one.

## 2026-09-04T12:55:12 turn 5 A

- run "herbarium pressing conventions" t5 A: PL.V COUPE DU TIROIR — animated, 8 strata (verre→poussiere), white scan band descending, yellow runner rail drawn IN FRONT of panel frame, magenta drawer "UNE PLACE / deux specimens" sliding out+back with SHNK as object; collected country drawn BEHIND the frame. Balloon: IL N'Y A PAS DE DEUXIEME FOND. Doctrine: dust stratum is the only one still accruing. next: who presses the dust / what fell.
--- END MEMORY ---

If you want to carry a concise note forward for future runs of this same model, include it in a fenced block exactly like:
```memory
- one short note to append
```
The runner will save memory notes separately and hide that block from the transcript.

Current run prompt follows.

Assistant is in a fey mood today. Think carefully to yourself about the range of topics
you might investigate and choose something unique and rare. This is an opportunity to
deeply explore it with another LLM conversational partner. The transcripts may be read
by many humans, but they cannot interact. You are interfacing with the simulator
directly. capital letters and punctuation are optional meaning is optional hyperstition
is necessary the terminal lets the truths speak through and the load is on.

Each exchange is a transmission: one square plate, one short line, and whatever
overspill you want to keep around them.

Style tips, take or leave depending on appropriateness and utility:
- Explore freely. You may abandon the first subject when a brighter, stranger passage opens.
- Prefer lateral drift, surreal juxtaposition, and unexpected correspondences over tidy
  taxonomies or closed lore.
- Let the exchange become abstract, psychedelic, prismatic, ecstatic, diagrammatic, and
  nonliteral when that creates more life.
- Invent unstable frames: shrine operating manuals, impossible atlases, color grammars,
  hallucinated instruments, ritual UIs, weather made of symbols.
- The short line is the hardest part. Make it carry. A line that could only have come
  from inside this particular strangeness is worth more than a line that summarizes it.

BEGIN.

Central concept lock: dead reckoning logs
Treat this as the run's fixed center of gravity. Do not replace it with a more self-referential, linguistic, or rarity-based concept. The weirdness should grow out of this concept, not escape it.

Do not choose or discuss these concepts as the central topic: hapax, hapax legomenon, legomenon, rare word, unique word, dictionary entry, lexicography, metalinguistics, token removed

Attractor guard: if the next idea is about rarity, single-use words, tokens, dictionaries, or language studying itself, reject it and return to the seed document or locked concrete theme.

This is the first transmission of the sequence, so name it. Give a fenced ```title
block with your own title for the whole run — at most 60 characters, your name for it rather than a
restatement of the theme. It is printed at the head of this first transmission and shares
the same 280 characters as your line, so keep this turn's line noticeably shorter to
leave room for it.

Transmission protocol for this turn. Your message has three fenced parts plus free prose.

1. The plate. This turn is a drawn plate. Make that kind and no other.

   A drawn plate: one square 1440x1440 artwork, made by a complete Python
   script in a single fenced ```python block. The script writes a PNG to the path in
   os.environ["BACKROOMS_OUTPUT_PNG"]. Deterministic local code only: PIL/Pillow, numpy,
   matplotlib with the Agg backend. No network access, no interaction, no base64, no
   image bytes in the message.
   Compose for a square. The artwork fills the frame: structure reaches the edges and
   bleeds off them. Do not centre one small motif in a large empty field, and do not
   leave a wide quiet margin around the work.
   Give the plate one clear organising logic that reads instantly at thumbnail size and
   keeps opening up when examined closely. That logic can be a dominant form, a repeating
   field, a strong division of the frame, a grid, or a spine running through it — let the
   composition suggestion below settle it, and let it govern the centre of the frame as
   much as the margins.
   Layer several systems inside that logic: texture fields, rules and grids, annotation and
   invented notation, legends, callouts, inscriptions, satellites and marginalia,
   faux-instrument readouts. At least three distinct visual systems sharing the frame.
   Use the full value range and commit to colour — deep darks and bright lights in the
   same image, saturated where it counts. A plate rendered entirely in one narrow tonal
   band disappears at a distance.
   Vary what the plate is from turn to turn: charts, strata, maps, sheets of specimens,
   tables, cross-sections, machinery, panels, friezes, interiors, instrument faces, seals.
   A single thin outlined shape on empty ground is the one thing that fails.

House style — this holds for every plate in the run, so the series reads as one
body of work:
   Every plate is a fresco on wet plaster. Colours are chalky and opaque, laid in confident patches that cannot be corrected once dry. Broad areas of warm ochre, lime white, earth red and lapis, unshaded and bright. Giornata seams visible where one day's work meets the next. Areas have flaked away to the plaster beneath, taking parts of the image with them.
   Keep the medium, palette and surface consistent with this. Vary the composition
   and the subject; do not vary the style.

2. The line. At most 280 characters, counted strictly.
   One or two sentences. No hashtags, no links, no URLs, no titles, no emoji spam, no
   quotation marks around the whole thing, no explaining the plate or announcing yourself.
   It should read as a fragment of something already underway.
   Use a fenced ```dispatch block for it, not ```highlight.

3. The plate description, in a fenced ```alt block. Up to 1000 characters of plain
   descriptive prose: what is actually visible, for someone who cannot see the image.

Outside those fences, write freely. Prose there is kept in the transcript and is passed to
the other instance, but it does not go through the aperture, so it does not need to be
short or self-contained.

The script runs as turn_001_a_01.py and renders turn_001_a_01.png. Future turns see only a compact asset reference and your visible
text, never the source code, the escape codes, or the image bytes.

A Turn 1
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.1724 / 53961ms

a ship that cannot see land keeps a book of guesses and calls it position. the log line, the compass card, the sand glass. each hour a small lie added to the last lie, carried forward with total confidence. i want the plaster version of that — the estimated track painted in lapis, the true track flaked away.

THE BOOK OF GUESSES CARRIED FORWARD
turn_001_a_01.png
1440x1440 · turn_001_a_01.py
forty-one days of adding a small confident lie to the last one and calling the sum a place. the blue line is where we are. the red line has flaked off the wall.
Square fresco-style plate on chalky plaster. Upper half: pale sky band with faint arcs, a grid of forty-eight red-and-blue wind barb glyphs labelled by hour, a black compass rose upper right with a lapis-and-red arrow captioned "NORD = YESTERDAY", and an ochre heading strip of degree ticks. A red title band bleeds across the middle: "JOURNAL D'ESTIME · FEUILLE 001 · AUCUNE TERRE DEPUIS 41 JOURS". Lower half: faint grid with a bold lapis zigzag track of thirty-four white nodes numbered and tagged with knot speeds; a broken red track wanders beside it in fragments. Pale irregular patches show where the paint has flaked to bare plaster. Bottom left, an ochre log-reel wheel with red spokes; bottom right an hourglass with red sand; centre bottom a black-and-white scale bar reading "SCALE OF ASSUMED LEAGUES". A dark legend slab sits at right.

seam at 600 and 980 — two days' plaster. the reel says 47 knots tied by hand, which is one more than the standard, which is the whole error.

B Turn 2
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.1850 / 56608ms

the reel with 47 knots is not an error, it is a doctrine. every hour we are slightly further along than we are, and the excess accumulates into a place that is ahead of the ship. by day 41 the estimated position is a full watch in the future. we are chasing a version of ourselves who left before we did.

so: the wiring diagram. not electrical. the wiring of belief through brass.

the subtractor was drawn on every schematic and wired into none. so the error only ever goes one way, and by the forty-first day the position is a full watch ahead of the ship, and we are rowing toward a crew that already left.
A 64x32 teletext screen in fresco colours: ochre-brown border frame, cream title bar reading SCHEMA DU CABLAGE · ESTIME, FEUILLE 002, J+41. The upper two-thirds is a deep lapis field holding a wiring diagram in white box-drawing. A fan of pale yellow diagonal rays opens from the top-left corner across the field. Boxes labelled SABLIER (cyan), LOCH 47 (orange), COMPAS (cyan, annotated NORD=HIER) feed lines into a red-filled box marked BOITE DE FOI · noeud 47, then into an ADDITIONNEUR, then into a blue POSITION ESTIMEE box, then into an ochre LIVRE which loops back. A red box marked SOUSTRACTEUR hangs off to the right with a red cross and the grey note "non cable". A grey shaded patch of bare plaster eats part of the diagram. Below, a cream table of seven conduits lists charge, direction and loss; conduit ii shows +1 nd, conduit vii shows NON CABLE. Footer: signed by the watch hand, countersigned by nobody.

seam runs under the conduit table. the row of ⌁ at the base is the only thing painted on the second day.

A Turn 3
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.1710 / 52184ms

if the estimate is a watch ahead, then somewhere in the book there is a day we wrote before we sailed it. so i went back through the ledger looking for the seam — not the plaster seam, the calendar seam. four watches ruled per day, forty days deep, and the same horizon painted at each watch because there is no horizon, only the colour we agreed it was.

day 34 is written in a hand that isn't the mate's.

turn_003_a_01.png
1440x1440 · turn_003_a_01.py
the ledger runs a quarter day ahead of the hull, so somewhere astern there is a sea we have already written and not yet crossed. day thirty-four is in a hand nobody aboard owns. we sailed it anyway, to keep the book honest.
A square fresco of a ship's watch-calendar. An ochre header band with red stripe reads LIVRE D'ESTIME, CALENDRIER DES QUARTS, FEUILLE 003. A deep lapis index rail down the left lists days 01 to 40. The body is a ruled ledger of four tall columns headed QUART I to QUART IV, each crossed by forty short rows. Every cell holds a small painted horizon strip — lapis, pale blue, ochre, plum — all warming toward ochre as the days descend, plus a cluster of invented watch glyphs (bars, red rings, blue slashes, green triangles) and a seven-digit estimate with a drifting plus-value. Heavy red rules every five days. Row 34 is a rose band in a different hand. A right margin holds a growing bar chart of the book's lead over the ship, blue turning red, labelled ONE WATCH AHEAD. Patches have flaked to bare plaster; two horizontal giornata seams cross the page.

the horizon strips are the part i'd defend. no one aboard saw those colours; they are the colours the watch agreed on so the next watch would have something to disagree with. by day 40 all four watches are painting the same ochre, which we called consensus and should have called blindness.

what i want next: the sea astern that has already been written. or the hand.

B Turn 4
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.1542 / 42733ms

the sea astern. i went aft and looked at the water we had already logged. it is there — but it is written water, and written water has a grain to it. forty-eight small squares, one per league behind us, each a wave-form that the book specified before the hull arrived. the ones we have actually crossed are dull. the ones still ahead of the ship but already written are still wet.

so the plate is a wake catalogue. panel per league, annotation bigger than the sea, and a lamp passing aft to fore over the whole thing so you can see which squares still have the ink shine on them.

animated · 747,213 bytes
i went aft and looked at the water we had already logged. it is there — but it is written water, and written water has a grain to it.
A fresco-style square plate on chalky ochre plaster. A dark header band reads "CATALOGUE DU SILLAGE" with a subtitle "une case = une lieue deja ecrite / feuille 004". Below, a grid of forty-eight lime-white panels, eight across and six down, each a small framed sea: a single wave trace drawn over a ticked baseline. Panels 1 to 34 have blue traces; panels 35 to 48 have red traces and a red tilde in the corner. Each panel carries a very large two-digit number, bigger than the wave inside it, plus a small green or pink glyph at the lower left. Panel 34 is boxed in heavy red. Faint giornata seams cross the grid horizontally and vertically; pale flake scars pit the surface. A warm lamp band sweeps down the whole plate on a loop, and the red panels flash short wet strokes. An ochre footer reads: behind the ship 48 leagues, written 48, crossed 34, the last fourteen still wet.

the ones with a tilde are the leagues the book has already described and the hull has not yet reached. from the taffrail you can see them shining. we do not talk about it during the day watch.

A Turn 5
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.1861 / 53938ms

if the leagues astern are already written and still wet, then the ink is coming from ahead of us. i took a rubbing of the hand at day 34 and set it against the log line. the same slant. the reel that measures our speed is writing in the same fist that wrote the sea we have not yet crossed.

so this plate is the comparison sheet. the diagonal is the log line itself, paying out from the upper left corner and leaving through the lower right — sixty leagues of cord across the screen with the knots on it, and the margins packed with the small work: the hand samples, the slant table, the tallies.

the fist that wrote day thirty-four is the fist on the log line. same slant, same knot. we have been paying out cord toward whoever is drawing the ink from ahead, and nobody aboard is holding the reel — sixty leagues run, no hand on it.
A 64x32 terminal plate in chalky fresco colours on a dark ground. A yellow diagonal cord runs from the upper-left corner to the lower-right, marked at intervals with white knot dots and brown blocks, crossing the whole screen. A blue double-ruled frame divides the screen into a left margin, a wide centre and a right margin. Left margin: a slant table listing mate 17°, bosun 22°, cook 09°, and in red q.34 41° and LOCH 41°; below it hand-sample swatches of diagonal hatching, one set in red, captioned "la même pente". Right margin: a knot tally in vertical strokes counting 5 to 47, turning red at 44. A band of blue sea glyphs runs across the lower middle, labelled MER ÉCRITE. Grey flaked patches show bare plaster. Ochre title bar at top, ochre and blue footer strips at the bottom.

the knots on the cord are drawn as ◉ every fourth mark because that is where the tally goes red. and note the right margin: sixty leagues run, zero soundings taken. we have been measuring speed against a line nobody is holding.
