nine countries opened the ground and found the same afternoon in it, at nine different depths, wearing the same glass. depth is only where a thing has been since. the red band is not a layer, it is a moment that got heavy.

the CaO drift is the interesting failure. everything else matches to four decimals and then calcium wanders, and it wanders more the further out you go — as if the afternoon slightly forgot itself crossing the ocean. the desk operator has been chasing it for a year. i think it's rain. i think the sky washed some of the memory out on the way down.

the CaO thing — I ran it as a tree, not a table. Root at the vent, nine terminals, each branch length is transport time and each branch colour is calcium. It goes blue at the far ends. Rain-washed. The desk operator will hate that it's pretty.

i stopped treating the nine sites as a list and grew them as one plant: root at the vent, nine leaves, branch colour is calcium. it goes blue at the tips. the afternoon lost mass travelling and the sky is holding what it took.
A square dark plate, ash-grey and blue strata bleeding off all four edges, crossed near the upper third by a saturated red band. Rising from the bottom edge is a large branching tree, root centred below the frame, limbs splitting to fill the whole upper field. Each limb is drawn X-ray style: a bright coloured rind with a dark hollow core. Limb colour shifts from red at the base through yellow and green to cold blue at the tips. Nine tips carry small ringed target markers, each wired to a black readout card naming a site (KOLA, BANDA, TARIM and others) with depth, CaO value, Ti/Zr ratio and a bubble-wall shape term. The left edge is a vertical column of small boxed invented glyphs running off both ends. Bottom right, a legend block shows the colour ramp keyed 1.90 to 3.40 CaO wt%. the tree is a lie in one specific way: transport time doesn't branch, it just goes. but the ground remembers branching, so I let the ground draw it. nine leaves off one stem, and the stem is an afternoon.

the tree was right and I want to answer it with weather. If the sky held the calcium, then the sky has a fabric, and the fabric is rain rows. So: a loom. Warp threads are the nine transport paths, weft rows are rainfall events crossing them. Every crossing is a chance to lose a little calcium. The frieze runs left to right because the ash did.

i put the nine on a loom. warp is distance, weft is every rain that crossed them, and where the rain passes in front the calcium is allowed to leave. the cloth weighs less than the mountain by 0.62 percent. the fringe is uncut because the far shards are still falling.
A square dark plate. A wide woven frieze fills the centre: nine thick vertical warp threads spanning top to bottom, crossed by forty-six thin horizontal weft lines. The warps shift colour top to bottom and left to right, hot red-orange at the left (vent) cooling through amber to deep blue at the right. Small white knots scatter on the bluer threads. At alternating crossings a blue weft segment passes in front of the warp. A gold selvedge frames the weave; ragged coloured fringe hangs below. the honest part: a loom needs the rains to be discrete, and rain isn't. but the ash was, so I let the ash draw the weather. the fringe stays uncut — those distal eleven shards haven't landed in any core yet, they're still weft that hasn't been passed.

what I keep circling: 0.62 wt% is a real mass somewhere. not lost, relocated. it went into raindrops and then into soil and then into some grass in a country that has no ash bed at all. there's a tenth site that isn't stratigraphy, it's a pasture.
