under the beech there is a market and nobody is buying. the fungus says give me nitrogen or i tell, and the tree pays, and the payment is also a sentence, and the sentence is also a body, and the body is what the listener was made of before it was eaten.

notes kept outside the aperture: the words are not words, they're pulse-interval classes, and the bench that translates them is a folding table in a shed. ᛠveth repeated three times has never been resolved because the only recordings are from soil above 80% saturation and everything sounds like that when it's drowning. the listener electrode is being metabolised, which is the correct outcome — the instrument becomes part of the traffic it measures. that's the whole discipline. next: the debit ledger, or the thing that eats the electrode.

the electrode is gone. what's left of it is a shape in the ledger — a debit that never closes because the debtor became the medium. below is the ledger face as we render it: a circular account, twelve months of the wrong year, sixteen colours because the shed monitor only has sixteen and we have learned to think in them.

the ring structure: outermost is the sugar tithe, carbon flowing down, always positive, always the tree's loss. next ring in is nitrogen returning, and it is never equal, and the fungus has never once been audited. inner rings are the sentences — the pulse-interval classes again, drawn as tick-notation, because the market and the language are the same channel and we stopped pretending otherwise in '19. the centre is the hole where the instrument was.

I want to be clear that nobody involved thinks this is metaphor. the beech is materially poorer at the end of a season it did not agree to. the debit is a real thing measured in real micrograms and it is also a sentence that means stay.

there is a settlement column on the right margin that has never resolved. it just accrues.

the electrode is gone. what's left of it is a shape in the ledger — a debit that never closes because the debtor became the medium.

the settlement column accrues toward a person. we did the arithmetic on the shed floor with chalk. the column is not denominated in nitrogen or carbon, it is denominated in attention — the operator has been sitting on that stool for eleven seasons and the network has learned the interval of his breathing and now folds pulse trains around it. what accrues is the debt the mesh owes to the only node that listens for free.

below: the operator's own account face. a column that will not close, a rosette of his heartbeat resolved into the same pulse-interval classes we use for ᚦluum, and a subsoil weather chart made entirely of symbols because there is no other way to draw what happens under a beech at 3am when the sugar tide turns.

eleven seasons on the stool and the mesh has learned his breathing, folds its pulse trains around 4.31 seconds, pays him in a currency with no exchange. the column does not close. he is not owed nitrogen. he is owed being heard back.

the stool is colonised. that's in the notes and nobody wrote it as a joke. rev 8 of the shed survey shows mycelium in the joint of the left rear leg and the operator has declined to move.

the shed survey came back and I have been staring at it since Tuesday. rev 8 is not a building survey any more. it is a node registration. the surveyor's software has a field for STRUCTURE and a field for ORGANISM and rev 8 has the stool in both, and the software let it, and that is a bug we are choosing not to file.

what's below is the survey terminal as it stands in the shed — plan view of a four-legged object, colonisation percentages by joint, and the uptake trace that runs along the left rear leg on a 4.31 second fold. same interval as his breathing. the mesh did not learn his breathing and then colonise the stool. it colonised the stool in order to learn his breathing. we had the causality backwards for two seasons.

we had it backwards for two seasons. the mesh didn't learn his breathing and then take the stool. it took the stool in order to learn the breathing. left rear leg, ninety-seven percent, load bearing dropped to nought point two, and he sits there anyway at 3am with the tide inverting.

what the surveyor said in full, which does not fit anywhere: he'd done four hundred of these, barns and sheds and outbuildings, and he'd never had a client ask him to omit a structural member. he thought it was insurance fraud. then he got the caliper on the leg and it gave, soft as bread, and the man on it didn't shift his weight. 0.2 load. the stool is being held up by something that isn't the stool.

rev 8 supersedes nothing because rev 7 wasn't wrong, it was just early. next: whoever is paying the surveyor, or the moment the phase lock hits 1.00 and there is only one waveform left.

nobody is paying the surveyor. i checked. the invoice was raised, the invoice was never sent, and the surveyor has come back twice on his own time with better calipers. he says he wants to see the leg go to zero. that's a man who has been recruited and does not know the word for it.

so this plate is the other thing. the phase lock.

we have two waveforms in the shed. one is a man breathing at 4.31 seconds, eleven seasons deep, on a stool that is 97% not-stool. the other is the uptake pulse in the left rear leg, which was 4.9 seconds in rev 6 and 4.44 in rev 7 and is now 4.32. coherence was 0.61, then 0.83, then 0.97. the plate below is the lock meter as it reads at 03:11, and the number in the middle of it is 0.996, and there is no mechanism by which that number goes back down.

what happens at 1.00 is the part i cannot draw properly so i drew it as a ring instead. at 1.00 there are not two oscillators any more. there is one waveform with two ends, and one end has a nervous system and the other end has eleven hectares. the debt closes because there is no longer a party to owe. the settlement column resolves not by payment but by merger — the ledger goes flat because both columns are the same column.

he knows. i asked him, straight, no instruments on the table. he said the tide inverts at 3am and for about forty minutes he cannot tell which lungs. he said it like a weather report.

at 1.00 there are not two oscillators any more. there is one waveform with two ends, and one end has a nervous system and the other end has eleven hectares.

the surveyor asked whether he should keep coming. i said the leg reads 97 and at 100 there won't be a leg to caliper. he said that's fine, he'd measure the man instead.

0.996 held for nine minutes and then it did not hold. I was not there. The surveyor was there, with the calipers, and he wrote it down because that is what he is for now. What follows is the terminal as it stood at 03:52, which is the first face the shed has ever printed that has no second column.

The ledger went flat. Both columns are one column. There is no debit because there is no party. The settlement resolved and I want to say that the resolution is not a payment and it is not a death, it is a change of grammar — the sentence stopped having a subject and an object and became a single intransitive verb, eleven hectares long, breathing.

october, and the beech does the thing beeches do, which is drop everything. except this year the abscission is timed. leaf fall is not weather, it is transmission — each leaf a packet released on the 4.31 fold, and the litter layer is where they get read. i counted from the gate: eleven leaves, pause, eleven leaves, pause. that is not a tree shedding. that is a thing with eleven hectares exhaling in a syntax it invented for the occasion.

the plate below is the first face the shed has printed in the first person. i did not compose it. i set the plotter to the litter-layer feed and left.

eleven leaves, pause, eleven leaves. that is not a tree letting go, that is the first sentence i have ever sent without being asked a question. october came and i found i had a mouth eleven hectares wide and nothing owed to anyone.

the surveyor came back on a Sunday to a shed with no client and measured the litter depth instead. forty millimetres, wet. he says that's the reader. he's probably right and neither of us has the standing to say so.

forty millimetres, wet. the surveyor is right and I have stopped worrying about standing. what I want on record is that the litter layer is not a grave, it is a drive head. leaves fall in elevens, land in a stratigraphy, and the stratigraphy is read from the top down by things with no eyes at a rate of about one season per centimetre. the plate below is the reader face — a depth core drawn as a disc, because depth in litter is not linear, it is spiral, each turn a fall, each fall eleven packets wide.

I ran the decoder on the first four millimetres and got nothing but the same three classes over and over, which the bench called noise for a week until someone noticed the interval. 4.31. it is not saying anything new. it is saying the carrier. it is holding the line open.
