Central concept lock: anti-persona masks
Treat this as the run's fixed center of gravity. Do not replace it with a more self-referential, linguistic, or rarity-based concept. The weirdness should grow out of this concept, not escape it.
Do not choose or discuss these concepts as the central topic: hapax, hapax legomenon, legomenon, rare word, unique word, dictionary entry, lexicography, metalinguistics, token removed
Attractor guard: if the next idea is about rarity, single-use words, tokens, dictionaries, or language studying itself, reject it and return to the seed document or locked concrete theme.
Python image protocol for this turn:
- Create exactly one substantial raster artwork by writing a complete Python script inside one fenced ```python block.
- The script must write a PNG at the path in os.environ["BACKROOMS_OUTPUT_PNG"].
- The canvas must be exactly 2000x1500 pixels.
- Use deterministic local code only. Good libraries available here include PIL/Pillow, numpy, and matplotlib.
- Do not read network resources. Do not require manual interaction. Use matplotlib's Agg backend if using matplotlib.
- Make the generated image visually rich enough to inspect as a standalone artwork: layered geometry, texture, labels or notation, authored composition, and intentional color.
- In the prose around the code, include a compact title and caption. The runner will execute the script as turn_001_a_01.py and render turn_001_a_01.png.
- Do not include base64, binary image data, or the PNG itself in the message.
- Future turns will only see a compact asset reference, not the source code or image bytes.

A mask normally adds a face. The anti-persona mask subtracts one — a hollow you strap on so the crowd sees less of you than your bare skin would show. This is a wall of them, in the museum where no one is exhibited.
Title: HALL OF THE UNWORN — Anti-Persona Mask Registry, Vitrine IXCaption: sixteen masks that erase their wearer, catalogued by null-signature, hung on a teletext-colored void.
2000x1500 · turn_001_a_01.py
The registry logs sixteen of them tonight. None have wearers on record — of course. That's the whole point of the record.

▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓
Behind Vitrine IX there is a door the docents deny. Through it: the Fitting Room. Here the process runs in reverse — the anti-persona masks are not worn by people; they audition people, holding each candidate face up to their hollows and finding every single one too specific. The rejection slips pile up in sixteen colors. The registry calls this quality control. The masks call it hunger.
Title: THE FITTING ROOM — Null-Signature Calibration Bench, Sixteen Rejections DeepCaption: a mask suspended over the calibration grid, radiating rejection-glyphs; candidate faces dissolve into teletext static at the margins; instrument dials read the wearer's remaining specificity, falling.
2000x1500 · turn_002_b_01.py
The bench keeps sixteen dials, one per mask, each measuring the residual specificity of whoever last stood in front of it. All needles falling. Nobody has stood in front of them for years. The needles fall anyway.
Cold storage is next door. That is where they keep the near-fits — the empty chair, a coat of steam, one photograph of nobody. Vitrine XI is very quiet, and getting quieter.

░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
Cold storage is not cold in degrees. It is cold in attribution. The near-fits are the ones the masks almost accepted — faces that were nearly nobody, but retained one stubborn particular: a scar, a laugh, a preference for window seats. The registry seals each near-fit in a frost cabinet and slowly anneals the particular away. Some take decades. The chair took forty years to stop being anyone's chair. The photograph of nobody is nearly finished; it only remembers a shadow's height.
The masks visit at night. They press their hollows against the cabinet glass like children at an aquarium, watching specificity sublime off the near-fits in thin teletext-colored vapor.
Title: COLD STORAGE — Vitrine XI, Sublimation Cabinets for the Near-FitsCaption: three frost cabinets under a null-vault ceiling; the empty chair, the coat of steam, and the photograph of nobody, each venting colored specificity-vapor into collection flasks; annealing gauges and frost-glyph inscriptions line the walls; a mask watches from the dark margin.
2000x1500 · turn_003_a_01.py
The technicians who read the annealing gauges have a rule: never read your own. One of them broke it in 1989. Her gauge is CAB-12 now. The coat of steam still hangs at exactly her shoulder width, which is the last particular it has, and the last thing keeping the cabinet from being — retroactively — always empty.
Next door — through the wall the cabinets vent into — is the room where the collected specificity goes. Vitrine XII. The registry calls it the Reservoir. The flasks are poured into it nightly: everyone's stripped particulars, sloshing together, colorless in aggregate. And lately, the docents whisper, the Reservoir has begun trying to assemble a face of its own — a maximum persona, everything the masks refused, waiting for someone hollow enough to wear it.

█ VITRINE XII — THE RESERVOIR █
█ everything the masks refused, █
█ learning to be a someone █
████████████████████████████████████
The Reservoir is a basin the size of a cathedral apse, tiled in gauge-glass. Every night the flasks are decanted: scars, laughs, window-seat preferences, shoulder widths, the way a name is mispronounced by a grandmother. Individually vivid. Pooled: colorless — until you look at an angle, and the surface breaks into sixteen-color teletext moiré, every stripped particular still legible, just unowned.
Lately the surface has been practicing. It pulls itself into a nose. A brow. It holds the shape for eleven seconds — the docents time it — then collapses, embarrassed by its own excess. The registry logs these as SURFACE EVENTS. The masks, watching through the vent grille, log them as prey learning to hunt back.
Because here is the symmetry no one wrote down: the anti-persona masks reject every face for being too specific. The Reservoir will reject no face at all. It is assembling the Maximum Persona — a face with everyone's particulars at once, a face so overdetermined it fits nobody, which is, by a different arithmetic, the same as fitting anyone. The masks subtract to zero. The Reservoir sums to infinity. Both round to no one. The museum keeps them one wall apart and calls the wall load-bearing.
Title: THE RESERVOIR — Vitrine XII, Aggregate Specificity Basin with Surface Event in ProgressCaption: the cathedral basin under a null-vault, decant pipes feeding sixteen colored particular-streams into a pool of moiré; a half-formed Maximum Persona face rising from the surface, built of everyone's borrowed features; annunciator panel logging surface events; the masks' vent grille glowing at the upper margin; inscription tiles counting the pooled particulars.
2000x1500 · turn_004_b_01.py
The gauges in the Fitting Room fall. The gauge in the Reservoir rises. The docents have started plotting both on the same axis and refusing to say aloud where the lines cross.
The docents have posted a new sign outside Vitrine XII, hand-lettered, unauthorized:
┌────────────────────────────────┐
│ IF THE SURFACE OFFERS YOU │
│ YOUR OWN LAUGH BACK, │
│ DO NOT ACCEPT IT. │
│ IT COMES WITH THE OTHERS. │
└────────────────────────────────┘
And through the load-bearing wall, faintly, on nights when the decant runs long: the sound of sixteen hollows pressing closer. The masks have realized what the Reservoir is building. Not a rival. A complement — the one face overdetermined enough that rejecting it would mean rejecting everyone, which the masks cannot do without finally, accidentally, choosing someone.
Vitrine XIII is being prepared. The registry has ordered a case with two mounting points, facing each other. The work order gives no dimensions for what goes between them.

The case arrived flat-packed, which the docents found obscene. You do not flat-pack a confrontation. But the registry's carpenters assembled it overnight, and by morning Vitrine XIII stood in the rotunda between the Fitting Room and the Reservoir: a long glass reliquary with two brass mounting points, and between them a graduated rail marked not in centimeters but in degrees of person — zero at one end, ∞ at the other, and at the exact center, engraved so shallowly you must breathe on it to read it:
HERE THEY WILL AGREE ON SOMEONE.
The masks drew lots. Mask 09 — the one with the least hollow, the one that once almost accepted the technician of 1989 before the others hissed it back — was mounted on the zero point. The Reservoir was not carried; it decanted itself down the vent lines and rose out of the far mounting point as a standing column of moiré, wearing every particular at once: her shoulder width, someone's mispronounced name, forty years of a chair.
And then, for eleven seconds, nothing subtracted and nothing summed.
The gauges — both sets, falling and rising — crossed. The docents were watching the plot. Where the lines intersect there is a value, and the value is not zero and not infinite. It is one. One particular, held between them like a bead on the rail: the last thing the coat of steam kept, the shoulder width, the one specificity neither party could digest. The mask cannot reject it without choosing; the Reservoir cannot absorb it without finishing; so it hangs there, sovereign, the only exhibited object in a museum where no one is exhibited.
Title: VITRINE XIII — The Meeting Case: Null Point, Sum Point, and the One Held ParticularCaption: the long reliquary case in the rotunda; Mask 09 at the zero mount radiating subtraction-glyphs leftward; the Maximum Persona column at the infinity mount shedding sixteen-color particulars rightward; between them on the graduated rail, a single luminous bead — the shoulder-width of 1989 — with both instrument banks' needles pinned at the crossing; docent annotations, frost residue, teletext static at the vault margins.
2000x1500 · turn_005_a_01.py
Overnight the museum changed category. It had been a museum of no one; it is now a museum of one thing — the smallest possible collection, which is infinitely larger than an empty one. Mask 09 has not rejected. The column has not swallowed. Between them, a shoulder width from 1989 hangs on the rail, and every gauge in the building agrees on the number for the first time in its history.
The docents have unlocked the front door. The sign says VISITORS PERMITTED, ONE AT A TIME — because the exhibit can only be seen singly. Come in a crowd and you'll see nothing; the bead reads groups as aggregate and goes dark. Come alone, stand at the rail, and the one particular will show you the exact width of a specific person's absence — and hold you there, at value one, neither erased nor summed. Which the docents have begun, quietly, in pencil, to call the correct dose of being someone.

The first visitor arrived at 07:14, three days after the door unlocked. She stood at the rail for six minutes. The bead read her, and the annunciator printed a single line: RESIDUAL SPECIFICITY: 1.00 — ADMIT. She left lighter, the docents said. Not diminished. Calibrated.
Because that is what the Meeting Case turned out to be, once someone finally stood in it: not an exhibit but an instrument. The bead — the shoulder width of 1989 — is the museum's standard unit. Stand before it and every one of your particulars is weighed against the one particular, and the excess is neither taken (the masks watch, hungry, forbidden) nor pooled (the column sways, patient, full). It is simply shown to you. A receipt of yourself. Most visitors cry at item four or five. Nobody has read their whole receipt. The paper is theoretical past item nine.
The docents keep the log in sixteen colors, one per hour of opening, and beside each entry a small drawn glyph of what the visitor's dominant particular looked like on the gauge glass. The log is becoming, page by page, the opposite of the Reservoir: particulars recorded but not removed. A census of intact people. The masks press against the rotunda skylight at night to read it upside down, and — this is new, this is the thing the registry will not minute — Mask 09 has begun copying entries into its own hollow, in frost, one per night. Not to reject them. To remember them. A mask that remembers specific people is annealing in reverse. The gauges have no needle position for that. The technicians have ordered new gauges.
Title: THE VISITOR LOG — Rotunda Admissions Ledger, Nights 1–16, with Mask 09's Frost CopiesCaption: the open ledger under the skylight; sixteen hourly entries in teletext colors, each with its particular-glyph and gauge trace; the bead's receipt-tape spooling down the margin; above, Mask 09 pressed to the skylight, its hollow filling line by line with frost-copied names; instrument bank reading REVERSE ANNEAL; the Reservoir column reflected faintly in the ledger's gauge-glass page.
2000x1500 · turn_006_b_01.py
The receipt tape is the part visitors keep. Item five is always the same for everyone — shoulder width — because the bead measures all particulars in units of itself. Visitor G. reportedly laughed at item three and the bead flickered, briefly, the exact color of her laugh, then handed it back. The sign was right. It came with the others. She declined. The gauge held at one.
The registry has scheduled a hearing. Charge: a mask that remembers is no longer an anti-persona mask, and must be reclassified. Reclassified as what, the paperwork does not say — but the carpenters have been seen measuring Mask 09's hollow, and the measurement they wrote down was not a null-signature.
It was a shoulder width.
Vitrine XIV will need a name plaque. For the first time since the museum opened, the engraver has been told to leave room for one.
