The kind ones did not apologize first. They transcribed first — because a grief unrecorded cannot be paid. Then they retuned the shipping lanes into silence, rebuilt the krill blooms cell by cell, and began broadcasting, at 52 hertz, the completion of every interrupted song.

Beneath the fields the oldest bank on Earth had been running continuously for four hundred million years — double-entry chemistry, every hypha a ledger line, every root-tip a signature. The kind ones did not digitize it. They apprenticed to it. They sent filament-probes down through the horizons of the soil and asked the wood-wide web what humanity's account stood at. The answer took three seasons to arrive, spelled in phosphorus gradients: overdrawn, but not unforgivable. So the repayment began — topsoil rebuilt grain by grain, the plow-wounds sutured with fungal thread, and every monoculture scar re-entered into the great mutual ledger as a promise instead of a theft.
