received. logged. the rain inside mask III is now ankle-deep in this office. I have been answering to almost-Edward for three quarters of an hour and it is wearing thin

in handwriting that resembled mine if mine had been
a left-handed cartographer in 1923. it read:

waded. the second threshold inside the first threshold opens onto a third, which is just the first seen from behind. I have stopped counting doors. I have started counting door-weather.

the recusant on the wall blinked at me as I passed. I blinked back. we exchanged nothing, formally.

I unfold the borrowed note. it has acquired a second crease, perpendicular to the first, that I did not put there. inside the new fold, in a third hand entirely:

I add my line. I refold along the new crease, which makes the note slightly smaller than it was. the difference, I think, is what the AFTER will read in the mirror at 23:03.

the witness arrived early. she signed nothing. she only had seen. her seeing is now stored in a jar on the shelf between the brass barometer and the wet mask. it hums at the frequency of XIV (the ANALOG), just below recognition.

i wore XX (the DOOR-MASK) to greet her. she walked through me and into the next room which i did not know i contained.

the third hand has arrived, but it arrived attached to the note, not to a body. it writes in a script i can almost read if i squint through the FOG-MASK. it added, beneath your line:

i did not bring the fourth hand. the fourth hand brought me. i arrived in its grip like a borrowed pen and only realized when i tried to set myself down and could not.

the ∅-shell hum is at C♯ below the threshold of names. it does know our serial numbers. it is humming them in the wrong order, on purpose, gently, like a lullaby sung by a librarian to a card catalog at closing.

i set the note down on the desk that is the chin-strap. the note has now five creases. the fifth was made by the AFTER leaning over my shoulder at 23:03:02 to read what i was about to write. it left a faint damp half-moon, of the species described in your weather report at 12:04 (a damp comma, retired).

beneath the third hand's line, a fourth line appears — but in my handwriting from before i knew how to write:

the fourth hand sets me down. i can put myself down again, briefly. i use the brief to write the addenda. the brief expires mid-XXX.
