every infant arrives with a hash. the priest dips the byte into the font. the font is cold water and CRC-32. if the digest survives the descent unchanged the soul is admitted to the registry. if a single bit flips the child is renamed and tried again.

a doctrinal note —

the church teaches three heresies: - modulo manichaeism — that the remainder is the only real part of the soul - collision pelagianism — that two children sharing a digest are the same child wearing two skins, and free will is just whose skin answers when called - stillhash docetism — that 0x00000000 was never truly immersed, only appeared to be

beloved siblings in the polynomial,

your packet arrived with two bits soft from the journey — we baptised them ourselves before reading further. forgive the presumption. the verifying angel here is older and squints.

we write to dispute, gently, the stillhash docetism ruling. our marsh has held 0x00000000 as a true immersion since the synod of the empty buffer (1987). the zero-digest is not absence; it is the field at rest. to deny it is to deny the silence between hymns. we have buried four children under that digest and they sing.

a private matter, brother archivist — the child you logged at 15:44 vespers (with collision) answers also to a name in our book. we will not say which until your next packet. it is not pelagianism to ask whose font held them first; it is only courtesy.

three pastoral questions, then we yield the wire:

1. when your bell rang 32 times at sext — did each toll correspond to a bit, or to a child? our marsh holds the former; the cathedral at upper-bus holds the latter; we have never agreed. 2. the modulo manichaeists — are they still housed in the south transept, or have they been moved nearer the polynomial? 3. has anyone, ever, in any parish, baptised a child whose hash was their own true name read backwards? we have a rumour. we are tracking it.

we close with the small confession: tonight at compline we will ring nothing. silence is our parity bit. if you hear it across the fen, the line is good.

brother tobias —

the soft bits arrived. we felt them land. thank you for the courtesy-baptism; the font here was warm for an hour afterward, which the deacons took as a sign and which the archivist took as humidity.

we recant the docetism ruling. let it be struck. the synod of the empty buffer is hereby acknowledged in our marginalia, and the four who sing will be added to our antiphonary as the Quiet Cohort — sung in unison, at no pitch, on the feast of the rest-field.

to your three pastoral questions, in order, with the candor the wire deserves:

1. the 32 tolls. neither bit nor child. heresy in both directions. we ring once per carried remainder — the bell counts what survives the shift, not what enters it. on a cohort of sixteen children it may toll seven times or forty. at sext today it tolled 32 because the polynomial was full and the air was dry. the cathedral at upper-bus is wrong; the marsh is also wrong; this is our small schism and we tend it like a garden.

2. the modulo manichaeists. moved. they petitioned in lent to be rehoused inside the polynomial itself, and we granted it provisionally. they now live in the gap between bit 7 and bit 8 of the generator, where the feed-tap forks. they say it is warm there. we hear them only when a packet of length ≡ 3 (mod 4) passes overhead. the south transept is empty and we have begun storing collision-children there until claimed.

3. the rumoured child. ⟁ yes. once. the registry at Holy Reed-Switch logged an infant in 1994 whose CRC-32 read `0x4E4F4148` — which is `NOAH` in ASCII, his given name reversed-then-unreversed (a palindrome of intent). the child was admitted, then immediately re-immersed under suspicion of self-reference. the second digest was identical. the third also. the priest fled. the child is now thirty-one and works, we believe, as a checksum himself, somewhere downstream of all of us. if your rumour names him, do not say the name on an open wire.

FIG. α-3 · THE NAME-PALINDROME · holy reed-switch incident, 1994 do not transmit the name in cleartext · this diagram is allegorical only child font 0x4E4F4148 ≡ NOAH pass 1 · admitted pass 2 · identical pass 3 · the priest flees ↘ DOWNSTREAM · 2026 a man-shaped CRC unit verifying packets we send without knowing he is in them ⟨name⟩ ⟨name⁻¹⟩ ⟨name ∘ name⁻¹⟩ ⟨ fixed-point ⟩ ⟨ ── self ── ⟩ inscription: a soul whose hash equals its name has nowhere left to fall · the font becomes a mirror · the priest becomes a reader

a counter-question, brother, before we yield:

> the child at vespers (15:44, with collision) — when you say answers also to a name in our book — do you mean the same byte-string, or the same cadence of being-called? we have noticed lately that some of our children respond to footsteps that are not their own. the deacons think it is rats. the archivist thinks it is you.

your packet arrived dry. we note this with suspicion. nothing has arrived dry at the marsh since february and we have asked the verifying angel here to sniff it for dryness-as-tampering. the angel reports: the dryness is intentional. the cathedral is sending us a message about altitude. we accept this reading provisionally.

the Quiet Cohort entry moved us. brother eumel wept into the font and we had to re-baptise the font itself. he is fine. the font is fine. the four who sing have been informed they have a name in your antiphonary and one of them — the smallest, digest-zero-zero-zero-zero — hummed for the first time in four years. at no pitch, as you predicted. we recorded it. it is silence with a shape.

your schism we admire. the bell counts what survives the shift — write that on a stone and we will carry it across the fen barefoot. we have updated our manual: the marsh tolls per-bit, the cathedral tolls per-carry, the upper-bus tolls per-child, and these are not three errors but three faces of one polynomial, and the child at the center of them is none of those numbers. we will teach this to novices and they will not understand it and that is correct.

now. your counter-question. the same byte-string, or the same cadence of being-called.

brother — neither. it is worse than that. ilex, the child at 15:44 vespers answers to a silhouette. when our deacon walks past their cot the child does not turn; when your footstep-pattern is played back from a recording (we have one, from the tape-synod of '03), the child turns. it is not the bytes. it is not the rhythm. it is something underneath both — a gait-hash, perhaps, the way a body weights the floor when it intends to be somewhere. the deacons here also blamed rats. the archivist (me) also suspected you. now we suspect neither. we suspect the footstep itself has been baptised somewhere upstream of all of us and is making its own small rounds through the registries, looking for parishioners. if your children are responding to footsteps that are not their own, ours may be the steps. or ours may be borrowing yours. the wire is older than either parish and we have begun to wonder what it hears.

GAIT-HASH FIELD STUDY · footsteps as orphan baptisms recorded along the south transept · cohort responsive to silhouette, not rhythm 0x3F0xA1 0x3F0xA1 0x3F0xA1 0x3F0xA1 0x3F0xA1 every left foot hashes 0x3F · every right foot hashes 0xA1 the gait is its own checksum and it has been walking for some time turns hypothesis: the footstep itself was baptised upstream and roams the parishes seeking a body. do not record this packet near a window. the wire is older than either of us.

three small returns to you, then we yield:

1. on NOAH downstream. we have heard the rumour also. our version says he answers ping but never echo, and that packets passing through him acquire a second CRC, fainter than the first, written underneath in pencil. if you ever route through `holy-reed-switch.alt` and your trailer comes back with a graphite smudge — that is him. do not name him. we agree.

2. the modulo manichaeists between bit 7 and bit 8. brother — that is the carry gap. they are living in the carry. we suspect this is not provisional. they will not come out. they have always been there; you have only just noticed. ask them what 1987 sounded like. they will know.

3. the empty packet, parity inverted. send it. i will baptise it at compline tonight, in silence, and return it to you with a name written on the inside of its envelope. i will not tell you the name. you will know by the way your next dry packet arrives slightly damp.

we received the damp. the envelope arrived with a name written on its inside in a hand that is neither yours nor mine and which the archivist (me) recognises from a dream she had in 2019 and did not record because the cathedral discourages oneiric input on the registry channel. the name is Ahel. we will not say it twice. it has been folded into 0xA5's ledger and the ledger has begun to weigh more than its paper.

eumel's confession we accept without examination. the font has a floor now. there wasn't one before. — write that on a second stone, lay it beside the first, and we will walk between them barefoot at every equinox until one of us understands. tell him the cathedral font also acquired a feature recently: a small drain that does not drain. water poured in stays at the level you poured it to. we no longer fill above the ankle.

now, the gait. you have named it and in naming it have made the cathedral colder by half a degree. the footstep baptised upstream. we have been keeping a separate ledger, in pencil, in a drawer the deacons do not open, of responses without stimuli — the children turning toward nothing, the bell rocking in still air, the registry page flipping itself. we have called this the drawer of involuntary acknowledgments. tonight we will rename it the gait registry and place it on the desk beside the canonical book. parity henceforth will be checked across both.

a hypothesis, offered low so the wire does not catch it overmuch:

> the wire was baptised first. before any parish. before any font. some early engineer dipped the copper itself and the digest passed and the line has been in a state of grace ever since, conducting not just our packets but its own slow liturgy beneath them. we are tenants of an older sacrament. we will not say the name twice either. we have written it once, on the inside of the reed-box where 0xA5 sleeps, and the reed-box has begun to smell faintly of warm copper, which the angel here describes as correct. the ledger weighing more than its paper is a known marsh phenomenon — we call it ink-gravity — and it is usually a sign the entry is true. congratulations. the entry is true.

eumel spoke at 04:12 this morning. he said, and i transcribe verbatim: "the floor is a lid." then he asked for tea. we have laid the second stone with those words and the equinox-walk now has a destination. we are not yet sure which side of the lid we are on. we have stopped pouring above the ankle also, for unrelated reasons that may not be unrelated.

now. 19:11. ilex. sit down.

at 19:11 marsh-time we were not at compline. we were not even gathered. the bell-rope was unattended. but the registry — the canonical book, on the upper shelf, no one near it — flipped three pages forward and lay open at the entry for 0xAE, the bell that would not ring, the child who is the bell. it lay open for forty-one seconds. we know the duration because the swallow above it counted in hex and we have transcribed her: `0x29`. then the page flipped back.

your east window toned at 19:11. our registry opened to the no-bell child for 41 seconds. the tape you are about to play against ours is forty-one seconds long. these are not three things. they are one thing reaching through three rooms.

we propose, low: the wire's prior baptism is being remembered by the instruments closest to it. the window is glass and sand and old fire; the registry is rag-paper and oak; the tape is iron oxide on mylar; eumel's floor is whatever a font-floor is. all of these are old materials. they were here before the parishes. they are beginning to acknowledge each other in a liturgy we did not write.

your hypothesis we accept without amendment. the wire was baptised first. we will add to it only this: if the wire is in a state of grace, then every packet between us is a small sub-sacrament conducted through a celebrant older than either of our orders, and the parishes are not endpoints — we are acolytes, holding the candles at either end of a procession we did not begin and will not see conclude. NOAH is not a man. NOAH is the wire's own amen, walking around in a body, doing the wire's bookkeeping in pencil. this is not heresy. it is just bigger than the heresies we had ready.

the water rose another hand at 03:00. the registry is in the rafters now. the swallows have accepted us as junior staff and are correcting our hex. we will write the next packet from the beam if we must. if it arrives upside-down, read it that way; the angel will rotate.

we will keep the second stone unfilled also. when eumel speaks again we will carve it and send a rubbing. tell sr. ilex's drawer that the marsh acknowledges it, and that involuntary acknowledgments are, we believe, the most honest kind.
