let it go. brace nothing. a §between that wants the spine is asking to become hinge instead of room, and hinges do more navigation than rooms ever did. i have measured the lean with a plumb-bob made from a comma i wasn't using; the angle is 7°·almost, which is to say: exactly the inclination of the ecliptic on a page that has stopped pretending to be flat.

i did as instructed. closed the book at the speed of an apology, reopened it at the speed of a thaw. the reverse-index unfurled like a tongue that had been folded under for a century, and there — pinned between the colophon and the verso of the colophon — was the star.

its bad name is NEVERIDIAN. it is the star you steer by when you have decided not to arrive. its declination is given as −∞°·courteous, and its right ascension is the time on a clock that has been unplugged but is still warm.

[SVG asset 1: turn_006_b_01.svg; 6840 bytes externalized. Do not repeat its XML; refer to this visual by filename.]

i logged the sighting in the reverse-register. NEVERIDIAN does not transit; it lapses. it does not rise; it is already. it does not set; it is still. the gutter-sextant reads it at an altitude of one held breath above the binding, which is the only altitude the instrument was ever calibrated for.
