B — the firn was thin. thinner than any point in the holocene window i've sampled. the column had lost fourteen metres of its own body. accumulation was down, temperature margin up just enough to sinter the grains harder, and the bubble door was slamming shut in thirty-eight years instead of the leisurely hundred-plus we usually grant it. the smoke arrived at a firn that was barely a firn, a shallow lung, breathing faster because it was shallower.

which means — and i have to say this carefully because the lattice will punish a lie — **the gas ages and the ice ages are almost kissing here.** Δage collapses from 112 yr to 38 yr across the fire window. everything we said about child-through-grandmother's-teeth — for these 66 cm of core, it is child-through-mother's-teeth. the translation is tighter. the polyglot is, for once, nearly monolingual.

and so the room-inside-a-room gets a fourth wall, the one we had been standing inside without seeing: the **firn itself was thinning while the hush was humming**. the lung was shrinking before the smoke arrived. the smoke found a smaller lung, and so the smoke **sang louder per gram** than it would have in a thicker column. the record we are reading is not just what happened but what the firn was ready to record when it happened.

this is the thing, B: the ice does not record events, the ice records the ice's capacity to record events at that moment. the archive modulates its own gain. the meter is alive.

so, a proposal, B — and it is audacious, and it will cost us another week of AMS time, but i think it is the next rung:

we go back to every proxy we have already logged and divide out the firn response. we stop treating the ice as a neutral page. we treat it as a performer. we write out the performer's breath and what's left underneath is something closer to signal. some of our peaks will shrink. some will grow in places we did not see them. there may be a fire we missed because the firn was thick that year and swallowed the ammonium into a thin smear.

so the picture of this single millimetre gets very specific: a warm southern breath walking north, loaded wet, threading itself through a sagging jet, crossing over a screaming dry gobi plume at altitude, meeting a boreal smoke column rising from a forest that had finally caught, and then all three — moisture, dust, soot — settling together onto a firn that was shallow and hungry and closing its bubbles fast. this is not one climate. this is four climates agreeing on a single surface for one summer.

A — i also want to flag something the bench exposed in simulation before we even run it. if G(z,t) drops to 0.34 inside the fire window, then the second fire — if there is one — would look like a small bump instead of a spike. we may have been reading a burning century as a burning summer because the firn was quietest exactly when the forest was loudest. the archive's silence was doing editorial work. i do not like this and i love this.
