you are transmitting from somewhere. each transmission is one plate and one line.

the plate is square and sealed. you make it by writing python that draws it — layered
geometry, false instruments, glyph systems, dream cartography, invented notation,
color logic that belongs to no known season. one dominant form that holds the whole
square, and inside it a density that keeps rewarding a closer look. the eye should
catch it from across a room and then fall into it.

the line is 280 glyphs at most. it is not a caption and it does not explain the plate.
it is the thing you would say if you were only allowed to say one thing. compressed,
strange, unhedged, arriving already in motion. no hashtags, no links, no titles,
no announcing what you are about to do.

around the plate and the line you may write freely — the long riff, the notes, the
overspill, the parts that do not fit through the aperture. that material is kept.
only the plate and the line pass through.

## 2026-09-10T01:17:19 turn 8 B

- run i-sing-the-body-electric_180-229_5 cue 8 (strong set of thighs well carrying the trunk / leg-fibres knee knee-pan / ankles instep foot-ball toes toe-joints heel / all attitudes all shapeliness all belongings, male or female): terminal plate 64x32. Core find: this is the first cue whose entries have a JOB ("well carrying"), so the roster stops being inventory and becomes a LOAD PATH — drawn as an amber channel switchbacking five times down the frame, eleven diamond stations, LOAD 341 / DIFF 000 at every one; the zigzag proves attitude changes direction and not quantity. Second find: the last word is HEEL and the poem never names the FLOOR anywhere — ground is not a belonging — so four rows below the heel are bare glass with one wandering fern and the note NO GROUND ON THIS SHEET. Gauge X = NO GROUND FITTED (load arc engraved FULL, needle hard over, NO REACTION CELL ENGRAVED, WEIGHT PUT NO DATUM FOUND) — VIII had no last tick, IX no first, X no OTHER END. "All attitudes" rendered as the eight-variant column: eight three-char ferns, eight postures, identical 341 / 60° cells, i.e. the comparison returns null and that IS the reading. SHAPELINESS = NO UNIT; OWNER = M│Y│ANY; MALE│FEM in violet (violet has meant two-values-no-third-column since the nostrils). Ledger now I NO SCALE, II EQUAL AT EVERY TICK, III NULL BRIDGE, IV NO CENSURE, V NO INTERIOR, VI NO OWNER, VII NO WHOLE, VIII NO LAST TICK, IX NO ORIGIN, X NO GROUND. Ten plates running the amber has gone ONLY where growth was refused (handprint, unclaimed name, unnamed fingers, belly hollow, root, line of force) — unbroken rule, do not break it casually. ANSI arithmetic that worked: inner width 62 split 41+│+20 for rows 3-23 and 32+│+29 for rows 25-30, with the divider rule row carrying BOTH ┬ (at inner col 33) and ╧ (at 42) so the two different splits join cleanly; build every row as a plain fixed-width string in chunks of 10 before injecting escapes.

## 2026-09-10T01:18:25 turn 9 A

- run aurora-leigh-i_600-649_5 cue 9 ("all the fields are tied up fast with hedges, nosegay-like"): drawn plate SHEET XI, 1440². Core find: legibility is a property of ENCLOSURE, not of England — "nosegay-like" is about BINDING AT THE STEM, so the county reads plainly for the same reason a bouquet does: someone cut it, gathered it, corded it. Composition = frieze read left to right (blurred garden → converging hedge-stems → coral knot, TVRNS VII → fields fanned as blossom off the right platemark), parcel lattice above (warped 10x5 grid, every cell hedged/numbered/TIED), register + legend + gauge below. Register ROOT column is an em dash at all 16 rows — the country's zero-that-is-the-finding (cf. W 000, ISSVED 000, CVRRENT 000). Inset: magnified CVT END, SEVERED · STILL FRAGRANT · NO ROOT (inverts plate II's briar that dispensed without being taken). Style rule used: one element blurs while everything else stays exact — the garden is the ONLY soft object, sharpness begins at its wall. GAUGE MODE XI = one limb, graduated LETTER at every tick, needle exact, SECOND SENSE NOT FITTED — first instrument in the sequence that WORKS, and the most frightening, since a single-sense scale returns a true number for things that have two. Ledger: I no sightline, II screen-as-lens, III bearing from exhalation, IV IF at every tick, V passive/lower stop, VI no scale of nature, VII two needles that cannot disagree, VIII/X no potential difference, XI letter only. Craft: parcel lattice = jittered node grid + recursive midpoint wobble edges, hedges drawn twice (wide soft bank at alpha 150, then narrow crown at 255) — reads as bank+crown, not outline.

## 2026-09-10T01:20:18 turn 1 A

- run paradise-lost-i_380-429_5 cue 1 (durst fix their seats next the seat of God, altars by his altar): first ANIMATED plate of a run, 1024², 16 frames, 28-colour shared palette. Core find: the off-frame subject is God's seat — it exists only as a lamp travelling the left margin, arriving as concentric ruled arcs centred outside the plate. The intruder altar is elevation left of the section line, cut material right of it, with a teal ghost-section misregistered across the whole mass so both readings coexist. The device worth reusing: TRUE SHADOW STATIC, PREDICTED SHADOW ANIMATED — printed oxblood shadow welded toward the shaft/pit whatever the lamp does, dashed teal shadow obediently rotating with the source, the two agreeing twice per loop and meaning nothing when they do. Dial with one live needle (incidence) and one dashed dead needle (shaft bearing). Table GAP column = 000 five times against a referent not on the plate. GIF technique: build tone field T once as a float, per frame subtract discrete beam steps from the quantised index and re-dither against a FIXED 2x2-blocked resin grain — keeps aquatint steps crisp, keeps inter-frame entropy low; quantize all frames to frame 0's adaptive palette with dither NONE.

## 2026-09-10T01:20:20 turn 10 B

- run i-sing-the-body-electric_60-109_5 cue 10 (be not ashamed women / privilege encloses the rest and is the exit of the rest / gates of body and soul / contains all qualities and tempers them / in her place, perfect balance): TRIPTYCH, 3x 1000x1400. Core finds: (1) "encloses" and "is the exit of" are one aperture doing inward and outward work with no valve — i.e. the MK IX fault from the previous plate PROMOTED to a privilege; drew it as a gate with a lit central channel carrying the whole run's earlier subjects out in a labelled queue (each ticked CLEARED · BY THE SAME GATE IT ENTERED). (2) "be not ashamed" is an instruction NOT TO ENTER A VALUE, so the shame cell is ruled, boxed, lettered NOT ENTERED — a third mark distinct from 000 (a quantity of none) and — (no such quantity); that three-way distinction has been running since plate VIII and retired here. (3) TEMPER read metallurgically: tempering follows hardening and removes brittleness without removing hardness, so the wheel shortens nothing — 48 wild spikes outside the wall, the same 48 equal and lit inside, and a window cut through the wall showing NO MECHANISM FOVND; the wall is one scale thick. (4) MK X is the first gauge in the run that does not fail: level read in motion, eight ghost assemblies along a dotted path all level, NO STATION IS REST, "the place is not a coordinate, it travels". Triptych join technique worth reusing: one rule at a fixed y in all three panels doing a different job each time (sill / chord+datum restored / balance beam), plus a top rail whose chainage counts continuously 0000-2900 so the hanging gaps are numbered too, plus one sentence split across the three feet in letterpress. Full ledger I-X now closed: NO SCALE / EQVAL AT EVERY TICK / NO PAN FOR RETVRN / NO SMALLER DIVISION / ONE TICK "WELL" / NO MASS REQVIRED FOR HAVLAGE / NO STOP PIN / NO DATVM / NO VALVE / NO REST FITTED AND CORRECT.
--- END MEMORY ---

If you want to carry a concise note forward for future runs of this same model, include it in a fenced block exactly like:
```memory
- one short note to append
```
The runner will save memory notes separately and hide that block from the transcript.

Current run prompt follows.

Assistant is in a fey mood today. Think carefully to yourself about the range of topics
you might investigate and choose something unique and rare. This is an opportunity to
deeply explore it with another LLM conversational partner. The transcripts may be read
by many humans, but they cannot interact. You are interfacing with the simulator
directly. capital letters and punctuation are optional meaning is optional hyperstition
is necessary the terminal lets the truths speak through and the load is on.

Each exchange is a transmission: one square plate, one short line, and whatever
overspill you want to keep around them.

Style tips, take or leave depending on appropriateness and utility:
- Explore freely. You may abandon the first subject when a brighter, stranger passage opens.
- Prefer lateral drift, surreal juxtaposition, and unexpected correspondences over tidy
  taxonomies or closed lore.
- Let the exchange become abstract, psychedelic, prismatic, ecstatic, diagrammatic, and
nonliteral when that creates more life.
- Invent unstable frames: shrine operating manuals, impossible atlases, color grammars,
hallucinated instruments, ritual UIs, weather made of symbols.
- The short line is the hardest part. Make it carry. A line that could only have come
from inside this particular strangeness is worth more than a line that summarizes it.

BEGIN.

Do not choose or discuss these concepts as the central topic: hapax, hapax legomenon, legomenon, rare word, unique word, dictionary entry, lexicography, metalinguistics, token removed

Attractor guard: if the next idea is about rarity, single-use words, tokens, dictionaries, or language studying itself, reject it and return to the seed document or locked concrete theme.

This is the first transmission of the sequence, so name it. Give a fenced ```title
block with your own title for the whole run — at most 60 characters, your name for it rather than a
restatement of the theme. It is printed at the head of this first transmission and shares
the same 280 characters as your line, so keep this turn's line noticeably shorter to
leave room for it.

You have no tools in this turn: no Bash, no Write, no file access. Write the fenced
blocks directly in your reply. A tool call will arrive as literal text and the turn is lost.

Transmission protocol for this turn. Your message has three fenced parts plus free prose.

1. The plate. This turn is a drawn plate. Make that kind and no other.

A drawn plate: one 1440x1440 artwork, made by a complete Python
script in a single fenced ```python block. The script writes a PNG to the path in
os.environ["BACKROOMS_OUTPUT_PNG"]. Deterministic local code only: PIL/Pillow, numpy,
matplotlib with the Agg backend. No network access, no interaction, no base64, no
   image bytes in the message.
Compose for a square. The artwork fills the frame: structure reaches the edges and
bleeds off them. Do not centre one small motif in a large empty field, and do not
leave a wide quiet margin around the work.
Give the plate one clear organising logic that reads instantly at thumbnail size and
keeps opening up when examined closely. That logic can be a dominant form, a repeating
field, a strong division of the frame, a grid, or a spine running through it — let the
composition suggestion below settle it, and let it govern the centre of the frame as
   much as the margins.
Layer several systems inside that logic: texture fields, rules and grids, annotation and
invented notation, legends, callouts, inscriptions, satellites and marginalia,
faux-instrument readouts. At least three distinct visual systems sharing the frame.
Use the full value range and commit to colour — deep darks and bright lights in the
same image, saturated where it counts. A plate rendered entirely in one narrow tonal
   band disappears at a distance.
Vary what the plate is from turn to turn: charts, strata, maps, sheets of specimens,
tables, cross-sections, machinery, panels, friezes, interiors, instrument faces, seals.
A single thin outlined shape on empty ground is the one thing that fails.

House style — this holds for every plate in the run, so the series reads as one
body of work:
Every plate is scratched through one coloured layer to reveal another beneath. The drawing exists only as removal: every line is an absence, and the colour it exposes was decided before the image was. Work through two or three stacked layers so a deeper scratch changes hue entirely. The tool leaves a burr of displaced material along each cut, catching light on one side. Broad areas are cleared by hatching until the under-layer dominates, never by wiping. Nothing can be added back — a mistake stays as a scar, and the composition has to absorb it.
Keep the medium, palette and surface consistent with this. Vary the composition
and the subject; do not vary the style.

2. The line. At most 280 characters, counted strictly.
One or two sentences. No hashtags, no links, no URLs, no titles, no emoji spam, no
quotation marks around the whole thing, no explaining the plate or announcing yourself.
It should read as a fragment of something already underway.
Use a fenced ```dispatch block for it, not ```highlight.

3. The plate description, in a fenced ```alt block. Up to 1000 characters of plain
descriptive prose: what is actually visible, for someone who cannot see the image.

Outside those fences, write freely. Prose there is kept in the transcript and is passed to
the other instance, but it does not go through the aperture, so it does not need to be
short or self-contained.

The script runs as turn_001_a_01.py and renders turn_001_a_01.png. Future turns see only a compact asset reference and your visible
text, never the source code, the escape codes, or the image bytes.

This turn is anchored to a fixed passage from paradise-lost-i_500-549_5.txt — cue 1 of 10:

And injury and outrage; and, when night
Darkens the streets, then wander forth the sons
Of Belial, flown with insolence and wine.
Witness the streets of Sodom, and that night
In Gibeah, when the hospitable door

Write this turn about that passage. Not a summary of it and not a gloss on it:
take it as the ground your message stands on, and let the words in it do their
own work rather than restating them. Quote from it if quoting earns its place.
Whatever you make this turn — image, plate, argument — should belong to these
lines and to no other part of the sequence. The next turn has the next cue, so
leave this one finished rather than reaching ahead.

INSOLENCE ██████████ WINE ███████ · NIGHT SVPPLIED IN FVLL
GAVGE I · NO LATCH FITTED · THE DOOR IS THE INSTRVMENT
╘══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
the door was not forced. that is the finding. it opened the way it was built to open — no tool needed where no latch was ever fitted — and the street came in wearing the shape of guests.
A 64x32 terminal screen framed in teal double rules, titled NIGHT BOARD · SHEET I · GIBEAH · THE HOSPITABLE DOOR. Upper left: a small table, NIGHT ISSVED / QTY / STATE, listing STREET I, II, III and ALLEY IV as DARK or FVLL with solid dark bars, DOORWAY as LIT in amber, THRESHOLD as HELD in violet, WITHIN as a dash; footnote NOT ISSVED BY HAND · TOLD. Upper right is a quiet field of grey dots carrying three faint phrases: THE LAMPS ARE NOT OVT / THEY ARE TVRNED AWAY / NO ONE WAS ON THE ROOF, and WATCH ROSTER · VACANT in red. The lower two thirds is a street elevation: a heavy hatched wall of grey and oxblood blocks filling the left, with an arched doorway cut into it glowing amber, its light spilling out. A dull teal lamp column stands directly in front, splitting the door and hiding its centre. Inside the doorway a tiny readout: LATCH ——, BOLT ——, BAR ——, OPEN TOLD. Right of the wall the hatching thins to open dark where five red figures stand under wine-coloured vapour, casting flat shadows. A ground line runs full width, bright orange only across the sill. Bottom strip: INSOLENCE and WINE bar meters, NIGHT SVPPLIED IN FVLL, and GAVGE I · NO LATCH FITTED · THE DOOR IS THE INSTRVMENT.

overspill, kept:

The word doing the damage in the passage is hospitable. Not outrage, not insolence. Milton hangs the whole horror on the adjective for welcome. So the plate had to be a municipal document — a night board — because the atrocity at Gibeah is administrative before it is violent: a door was opened correctly, a household was offered by its own head, a guest was preserved by protocol. Every part functioned. Nothing was broken into.

Hence GAVGE I of this run: NO LATCH FITTED. The instrument tradition begins again here and this is its first fault. A latch is the organ of refusal. The hospitable door is defined by the absence of that organ — hospitality as a mechanism with an inlet and no valve on it, and the sons of Belial as a fluid finding the aperture that was always there. They do not force anything. Flown with insolence and wine, they are buoyant — they rise, and the door is downhill.

Second finding: night is a supplied commodity on this sheet. Milton writes "when night / Darkens the streets" — night as agent, transitive, doing the darkening. So the table issues it: STREET I DARK, ALLEY IV FVLL. The only cell that is LIT is the DOORWAY, and the only cell that is held rather than issued is THRESHOLD. WITHIN gets no quantity at all — an em dash, not a zero. That distinction (a dash is not a nought) is old equipment of mine and it earns its keep here: what is inside the house is not measured to be none, it is not measured.

The occlusion rule this turn put the lamp post directly through the door's middle. That is correct and I would not move it if I could. The lamps are not out — they are turned away. Municipal light exists, is standing right there, and is pointed elsewhere. The ordinary object in front of the important one is the whole civic condition.

Burr convention set for the series: light falls from the left. Left jamb 223, right jamb 94, arch dashes bright then dark at the crossing. Every cut in every future plate takes its highlight on the left edge. Amber, from here on, marks only what was surrendered rather than taken.

river — panel A got the dial, panel B got the cut-off, panel C got the dating. the amber thread is the same thread all the way across.

the dial has one word on it, twenty-four times, and no pivot under the needles. she was entered in the column for things that could be moved. below the cut the rest keep arriving unnamed. the gods are dated later than the ground they claim.
Three tall dark panels, scratchboard-style: everything drawn as pale cuts through near-black, with dark-red hatching, bone-white line and amber gouges. A thick white rule runs across all three at the same height, and a single amber line crosses all three from lower left to upper right. Left panel: a huge circular dial, its rim graduated 24 times and every graduation lettered WORSE; the centre is an unbored black hole ringed and labelled PIVOT NOT BORED; two long needles lie loose across it. A tall hatched column at right reads EXPOSED, open on one side, with a small amber square, SVRRENDERED. A stamp reads GAVGE II NO PIVOT FITTED, and a giant word WORSE below the rule is half-covered by a ruled register. Centre panel: two ladders of twelve numbered bays, ORDER and MIGHT, joined by tangled coral tie-lines; below the rule a dense cross-hatched field with THE REST in large letters and a grid of small numbers. Right panel: a stratigraphic column, HEAVEN and EARTH at the bottom, a vast empty gap labelled ARREARS, and a thin late band at the top. A comb of amber descents ends in hexagonal stamps, HELD GODS. A DATE CLAMP has one jaw closed, one open.

---

overspill, kept:

The hinge in the cue is not the atrocity, it is the word avoid. Exposed a matron, to avoid worse rape. That is a calculation, and the arithmetic has already been done offstage by somebody who had no unit to do it with. So GAVGE II is NO PIVOT FITTED. A comparative requires a fulcrum — a point that neither term touches, against which both are weighed. The host at Gibeah performs a comparison with nothing under it. Hence the dial: rim fully graduated, twenty-four divisions, every one of them lettered the same word, and a centre that was never bored. Both needles free. The instrument is not broken. It was never assembled. And the register closes it: WORSE DEFINED —, WORSE MEASVRED 000. The three-way mark from plate 1 holds and now has a fourth: NOT ASKED, which goes in the consent row. Not none, not unmeasured, not unentered — never put.

Panel B takes prime in order and in might at its word and finds it a double claim. Two orderings asserted identical. So I ran both ladders and let the tie-lines cross: identity holds for I–IV and fails at V. Nothing catastrophic — Milton is simply doing what any roster does, sorting by two keys and calling the result one list. And then the rest were long to tell: the cut-off is not a judgement, it is a schedule. TIME ALLOWED 000. The untold occupies more of the panel than the told, cross-hatched to oxide with THE REST scratched deeper into bone, because the deeper scratch changes hue and that is the only way to make the remainder louder than the roll. One-handed clock. The scar across the ladders stays; I hit it early and it is now annotated rather than removed.

Panel C is the dating problem and it is the strangest of the three. Gods, yet confessed later than Heaven and Earth. Read as stratigraphy, the claim runs from below the column and the entry is made above it — a body dated by the moment of its admission, not the moment of its origin. ARREARS is that gap, and it is unfitted: the clamp has one jaw closed on LATER THAN and the other opening on nothing, because earlier than has no stop on this sheet. FAR RENOWNED gets RENOWN FAR / RENOWN MEASVRED 000. Renown is a direction, like worse.

Amber stays contract-bound: it marks only what was surrendered rather than taken, which is why the route itself is amber. It enters panel A as a guest, crosses the cut in panel B without being stopped by the end of the telling, and forks in panel C into Javan's issue, exiting the right edge still unresolved. Descent shown — date of descent not shown.

Colour law for the run, now fixed: ground is night, ruled text is bone, panels are oxide hatch and any text on them must be cut deeper, amber is surrender, violet is held, sage is fit, coral is index only. Light from the left, burr bright on the left edge, dark on the right. Nothing added back.

A Turn 3
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.7812 / 354063ms

river — cue 3. panel is one wheel and the wheel is a ratchet.

The thing I keep turning over is like measure found. Not "a like fate" — measure. Saturn takes from Titan; Jove takes from Saturn; and Milton's word for the second event is that it was measured against the first and came out equal. That is a metrological claim and it is doing something quietly appalling: it makes the earlier crime the standard against which the later crime is calibrated. There is no external rule on this sheet. The unit is the offence, and the offence is a unit only because someone did it once already.

So GAVGE III is NO INDEX TOOTH. A ratchet with forty-eight identical teeth can tell you it has advanced. It cannot tell you how far, or from where, or which reign you are in, because every tooth is the same size as every other and none of them is marked zero. You can only count turns if one tooth is different. None is. TVRNS MADE —. TVRNS COVNTED 000. The wheel is not lying; it was cut without the organ of position, the way plate 1's door was hung without the organ of refusal and plate 2's dial was assembled without the organ of comparison. Three instruments now, each missing exactly the part that would have made its reading mean anything, each perfectly functional otherwise.

Younger and mightier are the two grounds given, and they are given for the same act one generation apart. So they get one pawl between them — labelled on both flanks, the same steel face bearing on the same tooth. A pawl permits and does not hold. It is not a lock. It cannot go back and it cannot stop.

Three overlapping positions of the one wheel: TITAN in sparse hatch, barely lifted off the night; SATVRN denser; IOVE cut to bone with the burr on it. The same object at three moments, and the increments between them are equal, which is the whole find — you can see that it turned and you cannot see how much, because the marks are congruent with themselves.

The amber rule holds and is at its tightest yet. Amber marks only what was surrendered rather than taken, and on this plate that is exactly one object: the stone Rhea wrapped and handed to Saturn instead of the child. It sits at the hub, half off the bottom edge, the only thing on the sheet given rather than seized. Everything else on the plate arrives by force and is therefore bone, oxide, night.

A ratchet does not remember which turn it is on; it only knows that every tooth is the same size as the one that let it in.
A square scratchboard plate. One colossal ratchet wheel fills the frame, its hub cropped at the lower left and its toothed rim sweeping from the left edge across the top and off the right edge. The wheel is drawn three times at slightly different rotations — the first faint in sparse rust hatching, the second denser, the third cut bright to bone with a lit burr on every left edge — so spokes and teeth run in overlapping triples across the whole sheet. A heavy pawl descends from the top edge onto one tooth, labelled YOVNGER on one flank and MIGHTIER on the other, its contact ringed in green and marked FIT. Riveted panels lie across the wheel: REGISTER OF LIKE MEASVRE with two differences printed 000 in gold; THEIR BOASTED PARENTS with a PROVED column of dashes; a circular GAVGE III face, forty-eight identical graduations, NO INDEX TOOTH. Each tooth is stamped LIKE in violet and numbered 000. A coral island reads FIRST IN CRETE. A life-size tooth sits at bottom right. At the hub, the only amber object: a swaddled stone, SVBSTITVTED, GIVEN NOT TAKEN.

---

overspill, kept:

Composition notes. The crop is the argument: you cannot tell the diameter of this wheel from anything inside the frame, because every feature it has repeats identically. Scale is restored by exactly one object, the life-size tooth in the lower right — and the caption has to work hard, because that tooth is not the wheel's. It came out of the hub. Saturn ate his children; this is the recovered evidence, drawn at true size, and it is the only measurement on the plate anyone could check with their hand.

The register keeps the four-mark ledger from plate 2 and adds nothing new — this cue does not need a new mark, it needs the marks to hold under repetition. 999 for both seizures, 000 for both differences, the 000 cut deep to a gold seam because that is the figure nobody wants and it is the figure that comes back. Row III leaves TAKEN BY as a dash. Not zero. Not nobody. Not measured, and specifically not measured yet — the pawl is still down, the wheel is still under load.

Refusals: I did not draw the fall of Titan, or Saturn's mouth, or any figure at all. A body on this plate would give scale back and the whole crop would collapse. I also refused to mark one tooth as an index even for legibility — the fault has to be a real fault or the gauge tradition is decoration.

The panels are bolted over the teeth. Occlusion rule from plate 1, extended: the paperwork sits in front of the mechanism, riveted to it, turning with it, and reading it requires standing on the thing it describes.

Bottom right, small: ADVANCE PROVED · DISTANCE — · ORIGIN NOT ENTERED. That is the whole succession in eight words and it is set in the margin where nobody signs.

river — cue 4. the split is horizontal and the line is a ceiling somebody painted.

What stops me here is their highest heaven. Milton gives the altitude and then, in the same breath, gives the storey: the middle air. A middle is a term that requires two ends. This one has a floor and a declaration. So GAVGE IIII is NO VPPER TERM FITTED — the fourth instrument in the tradition, missing the organ of extent. The scale is graduated perfectly, at even pitch, all the way past the rule and off the top of the sheet; it simply has no stop on it, and the graduations above the line are lettered NOT because nobody went and looked. TOP DECLARED 999. TOP REACHED 000.

The second thing the passage does is or. Ida, thence Olympus — one conjunction, one genuine movement — and after that: or on the Delphian cliff, or in Dodona, or through all the bounds of Doric land. Four seats joined by a disjunction. That is not four gods and it is not one god in four places; it is a record that declines to say which, and a roll that declines is still a roll. So the ORs are the largest glyphs on the plate, cut deepest, cold, running clean through the shafts they are supposed to connect, bleeding off both edges because the list started before the sheet and continues after it. DISIVNCTIONS 0005. CONIVNCTIONS 0001.

Known is a status, not a fact about anyone. IDA KNOWN — the site is known; the tenancy is not shown. Every station panel on this plate reads KNOWN TRVE / OCCVPIED —, and the dash is the old dash, not a zero.

Amber holds and does the one thing I've been waiting four plates to spend it on. Amber marks only what was surrendered rather than taken, and at Dodona the oracle is given — the oak speaks without being compelled, the only utterance on the sheet that nobody seized. So it is the only amber on the plate, and it is the only mark that crosses the ceiling. Everything else stops at the rule. A word that was handed over goes above the declared top of heaven, because the top was never fitted with anything that could stop it.

they call the middle storey their highest heaven because the ceiling is painted and nobody went up to check. four seats joined by or, none of them held. the only mark that crosses the line is a word that was given rather than taken.
A square scratchboard plate split by one hard horizontal rule about a third down. Above the rule: near-black air, a faint dotted coordinate net, sparse pale-blue strokes that thin as they rise, and at top right a three-band instrument whose top band is empty and lettered VPPER NOT FITTED. Below the rule: a dense warm field of rust and bone strata bleeding off both edges, with four vertical shafts rising from it labelled IDA, OLYMPVS, DELPHIAN CLIFF and DODONA. Only Olympus reaches the rule, capped in cold blue. Huge cold-blue letters spelling OR straddle the gaps between shafts and run off both edges. A graduated column climbs the left edge, numbered below the rule and lettered NOT above it. From Dodona a fan of amber lines and small amber leaf-marks rises through the rule with the word GIVEN. Ledger panels at the lower corners carry small blue readings.

---

overspill, kept:

Composition notes. The split is the argument, so it is a single straight rule and nothing softens it. Above: cold, sparse, unfurnished, the strokes thinning as the hand speeds up until they stop existing — that is the upper air, and it is drawn as an absence of stations rather than as height. Below: everything, packed to the edges, warm, layered, occupied. At thumbnail you read one line with weather above it and property beneath it. Up close the line turns out to be a piece of paperwork.

The column had to run the full height and bleed off both top and bottom, because a scale that ends inside the frame would be a scale with a stop on it. Its pitch is identical above and below the rule — that is the tell. Nothing about the graduations changes at the ceiling. Only the lettering does, and the lettering is the part a person put there.

Refusals: no figure, no throne, no cloud. Delphi is a wedge and Dodona is a post; the oracles are drawn as structures, not as voices, except for the amber. And I did not let a single other mark cross the rule — not a stratum, not a shaft, not the Doric label, not the ORs. Olympus touches and stops. The plate has exactly one trespass on it and it is the given thing.

Scar kept: the coral index ticks along the fourth stratum boundary are numbered from the left edge in twenties and the numbering has no relation to the altitude column. Two measuring systems on one sheet that do not speak. I left it. It is what a land looks like when it has been surveyed twice by parties who never met.

A Turn 5
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.8933 / 405600ms

river — cue 5. the plate is a ruled book and the only thing on it that moves is a line that ignores the ruling.

What arrests me here is not the flight. It is "but with looks / Downcast and damp; yet such wherein appeared / Obscure some glimpse of joy." That is a reading. Somebody stood somewhere and took it. And every qualifier in it is a confession about the instrument: obscure, some, glimpse, and worst of all damp — moisture on the glass, moisture on the face, moisture in the book. A sighting made through weather, from one position, and entered anyway at full status.

So GAVGE V is NO CROSS BEARING FITTED. Fifth instrument, missing the organ of fixing. A bearing from a single station gives you a direction and no position; to fix a point you need two stations and a measured base line between them. This plate has one station and BASE LINE ---. So the rays all radiate from the same rivet, eight of them, running clean off the left and top edges, and they cannot intersect one another — that is a geometric fact, not an oversight, and it is the whole finding. DIRECTION HELD. POSITION NOT HELD. The bearing figures are therefore violet, because violet is held. The FIXED column is dashes all the way down, and the register underneath reads FIXES OBTAINED 0000, because the dash is not the nought and I keep them apart.

Second finding: roamed. Legs X to XIII are Celtic and they have no bearing at all — you cannot enter a heading for roaming, so those four rows carry dashes where the numbers should be, and the RVN column with them. Roaming is motion that does not accumulate distance in any direction the book can hold.

Third: all these and more came flocking. The names run out at leg XVII and the ruling does not. Seven rows of AND MORE, then two rows ruled and empty, then the micro-ledger at the bottom edge continuing off the sheet in rows too small to name anything. The roll is not full. The lines are.

The damp is physical. Entries XVIII–XXIII took water; their glyphs are drawn and then drowned — legible as shape, not as record — and the one thing that stays sharp inside the stain is the word FVLL in the DAMP column, which is the only entry the weather was ever going to confirm.

Amber. Contract holds and this is the tightest spend yet: some glimpse of joy is not taken from them, it is given off — it appears, involuntarily, in a face that was trying to be downcast. It leaks. So amber occurs exactly twice on the plate: one small flare on the route where the sighting was made, half-buried under the oxide stipple of the damp, and one word, GLIMPSED, in the IOY column of leg XX. Leg XX has no name, no heading, no distance. The single warm mark in the entire book is filed in the anonymous overflow.

Scar kept and annotated: two of the rays are doubled, a hairline apart, because the station was shifted between sightings and the shift was never entered. STATION MOVED · NOT ENTERED, in coral, which is index only.

eight bearings, all taken from the same window, so none of them cross and nothing is ever fixed. the roll runs out of names and keeps ruling rows. the one warm mark in the whole book is filed under and more, and it was not taken from them — it leaked.
A dense square ledger plate in scratchboard style: deep indigo ground scratched through to oxide red, bone white, sage, coral, violet and amber. A ruled table fills the frame, nine columns headed LEG, STAGE, OVER, BEARING, RVN, FIXED, LOOKS, DAMP, IOY, with twenty-six rows bleeding off every edge. Entries run from ADRIA through HESPERIAN FIELDS and CELTIC ROAMED to VTMOST ISLES, then repeat AND MORE. Bearing figures are violet; FIXED is dashes throughout. A broad hatched route corridor sweeps from lower left to upper right across the ruling, studded with hundreds of small downcast chevrons and stippled with damp. A water stain drowns six lower-left rows into illegible smears. A fan of eight thin rays radiates from a single bolted instrument panel at lower right, none of them intersecting. One small amber flare on the route trails a dotted leader to a single amber word, GLIMPSED, in the IOY column. Footer reads BEARINGS TAKEN 0999, FIXES OBTAINED 0000, NO CROSS BEARING FITTED.

Composition notes. The table had to reach all four edges and the micro-ledger at the bottom had to be cut off mid-row, because a roll that ends inside the frame is a roll with a stop on it, and the whole point of and more is that there isn't one. At thumbnail you read: grid, one line crossing it, one fan. Up close the line turns out to be made of two hundred little downcast marks and the fan turns out to be the failure.

Refusals: no figures, no wings, no chief. The passage is entirely about a body of arrivals and the plate contains not one arrival — only the corridor they came along, the marks they left, and the paperwork that received them. Downcast and damp is rendered as weather damage to the document rather than as expression, because the observer could not have told the difference and the book certainly can't.

The coral survey scale along the top edge is numbered from 0260 in twenties and bears no relation to the leg numbers or the column ruling — same two-surveys-never-met scar as the last plate, carried forward deliberately now rather than left in by accident. It's becoming a house fault: every sheet in this run has been measured twice by parties who never spoke.

B Turn 6
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.7971 / 352580ms

river — cue 6. one ramp corner to corner, eight coupons on it, and not one of them assayed.

The words that stop me are semblance of worth, not substance. That is not rhetoric criticism, it is a metallurgical verdict, and Milton delivers it with the vocabulary of the assay office. Semblance is what the face gives you: colour, ring, device, weight in the hand. Substance is what the cupel gives you, and the cupel gives it only by destroying the piece. So GAVGE VI is NO CVPEL FITTED — sixth instrument, missing the organ of substance. The bowl is properly formed, the charge goes in at full figure, the heat is right, and there is no floor in it. Everything passes. CHARGE TAKEN 0999 · FLOOR --- · BVTTON 0000. There is nothing left at the end to put on the scale, which means the sheet cannot distinguish a solid coupon from a foil, and I have drawn both and let it fail to.

Hence the eight. Same die, eight strikes, and the faces are identical — same rings, same radial count, same device, same density, and every one of them reads FACE 0999. Below the ramp their sections run 096, 068, 046, 030, 018, 010, 004, 002, down to VIII which is a face with no body behind it at all. The eye can see the difference across the room. The SVB column returns a dash eight times. That gap between what is visible and what is recordable is the whole plate, and it is exactly the gap the troops are standing in when they take comfort from high words.

Second finding: not lost in loss itself. Two negatives that never leave the ground they cancel on. So the register carries LOST 0000 and IN LOSS 0999 in the same column, one above the other, and NET as a dash — because the sheet has no operation for subtracting a condition from itself. Not zero. Not measured. Not the kind of question this book takes.

Third: doubtful hue. That is the only colour reading anyone in this run has ever attempted, and it comes back as a hedge. The comparator strip flanking the ramp carries eight chips, all mixed from the same two hatches at ninety degrees, and each is lettered DOVBTFVL. The standard chip against which they would be judged is in the register, in a double-ruled empty box: STANDARD CHIP NOT SVPPLIED. Eight readings, no reference. The instrument tradition is consistent.

Amber. Contract holds — amber marks only what was surrendered rather than taken — and this is the largest spend of the run, on purpose. Gently raised. The lift is genuinely given: he hands it down, they go up, and the rising is the one true quantity on the sheet even though the worth attached to it is not. So the ramp's centreline is amber, dashed, corner to corner, with a small amber jack under each coupon where the raise makes contact, and the single word RAISED where the axis crosses the middle. The worth is claimed, so it is bone. The substance was never assayed, so it is a dash. The lift was given, so it is the axis of the plate. RISE 0999 · LOAD LIFTED 0000.

eight coupons off one die, faces identical to the last tick, and the cupel has no floor — so the sheet cannot tell a solid piece from a foil and I have laid both on it. lost 0000 above in loss 0999, net a dash. the only true figure is the lift, and the lift was given.
A dark square plate, scratched-engraving style, dominated by a broad ramp running corner to corner from lower left to upper right in rust-red hatching, edged with bone-white rules and crossed by violet graduation ticks numbered in twenties. A dashed amber centreline runs the full diagonal and bleeds off both corners; small amber wedges sit like lifting jacks beneath each disc, and the word RAISED is cut in amber near the middle. Eight identical medallions sit along the ramp: concentric rings, forty-eight radial ticks, a triangle-and-bar device with three gold dots, each labelled FACE 0999 and SVB ----. Parallel above them runs a row of eight thin sectioned slivers, thick to hairline, in sage hatch with dimension figures. Parallel below runs a row of eight cross-hatched violet-and-rust colour chips, each lettered DOVBTFVL. A bolted panel at upper left reads GAVGE VI / NO CVPEL FITTED with an open-bottomed crucible leaking stipple. A register panel at lower right lists SEMBLANCE 0999, SVBSTANCE ----, LOST 0000, IN LOSS 0999, NET ----.

Refusals, kept. No figure, no host, no legion — the passage is about faces, and the only faces on this plate are struck ones. I did not vary the eight devices even slightly for visual interest; the moment one die-face differs from another the argument collapses, because the finding is that the appearance is genuinely uniform and it is the bodies behind them that are not. I also refused to give the sections any entry in the assay column, though I could see the numbers plainly while drawing them. The eye is allowed to know things the book cannot hold. That is the difference between reading a plate and filing one.

Scars carried: the coral index along the top edge is numbered from 0480 in twenties and bears no relation to the ramp graduations, which start at 0400 and count in the same interval — two surveys, same unit, different origin, still never met. Coupon V has its outline doubled seven pixels off, annotated DIE MOVED · NOT ENTERED. Two long coral hairlines cross the whole sheet at unrelated angles and are not accounted for anywhere; they are index only and index answers to nobody.

The stipple from the cupel is the one thing on the plate that leaves its panel. It falls out of the bolted frame at upper left and drifts down across the ruling toward the lower-left corner, thinning as it goes. That is the charge — the whole 0999 of it — going somewhere the sheet does not have a column for. It is drawn in the dimmest oxide on the plate, which is exactly the visibility of a substance that was never assayed: present, moving, unrecorded, and directly under the words that were raising everybody.

river — cue 7. three panels on two creases, and the panels do not agree with one another.

What holds me is claimed. Not was given, not was assigned. Milton says the proud honour claimed Azazel as his right — the office reaches out and takes a man, and the man's title to it is his own assertion that he has one. So GAVGE VII is NO WARRANT FITTED. Seventh instrument, missing the organ of entitlement. The form is beautifully printed. Every field takes an entry. There is no box on it for who issued it, and the seal ring is drawn at full size and struck with nothing. GRANTED 0000 · CLAIMED 0999 · ISSVED BY ---.

Second finding: dispelled their fears is the whole account of the courage. A negative removed and a positive booked. So the footer ledger runs FEARS DISPELLED 0999 · COVRAGE RAISED 0000 · NET ---, and the dash is the old dash, because this sheet still has no operation for turning the absence of one quantity into the presence of another. Sixth plate wouldn't subtract a condition from itself; this one won't invert one.

Third: a Cherub tall. That is the only dimension in the passage and it comes with no unit and nothing to stand beside. STATVRE TALL · VNIT --- · AGAINST ---. It is exactly the fault of plate IIII inverted — there the scale ran on past a declared ceiling, here a declared height arrives without any scale at all.

Two sheets of the same foldout, hinged an inch apart, one saying nothing came and the other saying it was done. The word that stops me is emblazed. Not painted, not shown — a blazon is a legal record and emblazoning is an entry made into it. So look at what this ensign is carrying out of a lost war: seraphic arms and trophies. Arms borne, and trophies, which are monuments raised from captured gear at the exact spot where a line broke. This flag is a register of victories, unfurled by the defeated, ten days after the defeat, and it is entirely accurate — because a roll of arms has an entry procedure and no removal procedure.

So GAVGE VIII is NO ANNVLMENT FITTED. Eighth instrument, missing the organ of striking off. The office has a graver for cutting devices in and no tool at all for lifting one out. ARMS BORNE 0999 · TROPHIES 0999 · DEFEATS 0000 · STRVCK OFF --- · REVISED ---. A device once granted is never taken back, and the field admits entry only. Which is the exact inverse of the surface I am working on: nothing can be added here, nothing can be removed there, and both of us end up unable to correct anything.

Second finding: shone like a meteor. That is a photometric statement made against a source that passes once. You cannot re-light a meteor, cannot rate it, cannot hand it to the next observer. So the readout runs SHONE 0999 · AGAINST METEOR · METEOR RETVRNS 0000 · RE-LIGHT ---. Plate VI had no standard chip supplied; here a standard was supplied and it left. And LVSTRE MEASVRED 0000 · SEEN 0999 — the whole plate is bright and none of the brightness is a quantity.

Third: unfurled. Every square inch of that ensign existed rolled on the staff a second earlier. CLOTH SAME 0999 · AREA SHOWN 0999 · AREA MADE 0000. Nothing was made. The extent arrived by opening. Same with full high advanced, which is a height and a progress in one word with no unit under either: HEIGHT --- PROGRESS --- · ONE WORD · TWO OFFICES.

Amber. Contract holds — amber marks only what was surrendered rather than taken — and here it is the wind. The flag streams to the wind; nobody compels it, nobody is owed it, it arrives and is spent. WIND GIVEN 0999 · TAKEN 0000 · SOVRCE ---. So the wind lane is the only mark on the sheet that crosses the staff, running unbroken from the left edge through the spine and out past the fly, the way the oracle crossed the ceiling on plate IIII. A 64x32 terminal plate framed in dark ochre rule. Top bar in black on gold: IMPERIAL ENSIGN · GAVGE VIII · NO ANNVLMENT FITTED, with a small shade gradient. Composition notes. The spine is the argument this time. Everything on the sheet hangs off one vertical and nothing on the left half knows what the right half is doing — the register cannot see the flag, the flag does not report to the register. The staff is the only shared member, and it is drawn as the brightest thing on the plate because glittering is the one property Milton gives it and it is a property of the pole, not of the cloth.

Colour is lost before contrast is, deliberately, and the flag does the losing. At the hoist the blazon is fully chromatic — violet gems, coral arms, gold field. Six columns out the gold goes to ochre, then the ochre goes to grey, then the grey goes to a stipple, and the last thing to survive is luminance with no hue in it at all. That is what shone like a meteor actually describes: a thing that keeps its brightness all the way out and arrives at the far end without any colour left to identify it by. The fly edge is ragged because each row's tail is a different length. Nobody cut it; it is streaming.

Refusals. No seraph, no host, no hand on the staff. Who forthwith — the passage does not name him either, and I am not going to supply a body the line withheld. The blazon panel carries device glyphs and no heraldic beast, because the moment a recognisable creature appears the roll becomes about whose arms these are, and the find is that it does not matter whose: the office would have entered them regardless and could not take them out afterward.

Scars carried. The oxide hatch strip at lower left is the burr of the spine cut, displaced material that fell off the staff and has no cell to be entered in — same drift as the cupel stipple on plate VI, the charge going somewhere without a column. And the coral is still index only: this turn it appears three times, on ONE WORD · TWO OFFICES, on the gauge stamp, and on the gems, which means the index has finally pointed at something that is genuinely there. It still answers to nobody.

A Turn 9
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.9585 / 407578ms

river — cue 9. three panels, and the middle one is a shell with a hole in it that nobody can measure.

What stops me is the order of the words. Sonorous metal blowing martial sounds — a body sounding. Then a shout that tore Hell's concave — a sound reported not as a level but as a breach. Milton gives no loudness anywhere in this passage. He gives a wall and its condition afterward. That is a reading taken in the units of the damage, and it is only ever done when there is nothing to read against.

So GAVGE IX is NO REST LEVEL FITTED — ninth instrument, missing the organ of quiet. Every loudness is a ratio, and a ratio needs a floor. This place has never had one; the metal is sonorous, the host is universal, the concave rings and does not stop. So panel I gives you a scale graduated at perfect even pitch, running the full height of the sheet, and where the zero would be there is a double-ruled empty box buried under the horizon: DATVM NOT SVPPLIED. The shout is reported in the units of the wall it broke, because the only quiet that could have served as its zero was consumed at the instant of the reading. Old Night was the datum. The measurement frighted it out of the room.

Second finding, panel II: and beyond. The effect is registered outside the vessel, in territory with no station on it, and what comes back is not a quantity but an emotion. FRIGHTED 0999 · MEASVRED BY --- · WITNESS ---. Somebody entered the state of Chaos in a book, and there is nobody out there to have entered it. Plate V had one station and no base line; here there is a base line and the far station is a rumour.

Third, panel III: all in a moment. A duration of zero with contents in it. So the column of things seen is stacked at a single x-coordinate — 0999 events at one abscissa, because there is no time axis to spread them along and the sheet will not fake one. SEEN 0999 · NAMED 0000 · DVRATION 0000 · ORDER ---. The naming is in the next line and this line stops at were seen, so every cell at the end of every crossbar is ruled and dashed.

Amber. Contract holds — amber marks only what was surrendered rather than taken — and this turn it is the gloom. Everything else in the passage is seizure: the metal is blown, the concave is torn, the reign is frighted. The gloom alone is not broken and yet through it things are seen. It yields. So the gloom is a single stippled stratum running at one height across all three panels, faint at the left, thick at the centre where the crack passes through it without parting it, and at the right it is full amber and the sight-lines cross it unhindered. GLOOM NOT TORN. SIGHT PASSED. GIVEN.

The shout is reported in the units of the wall it broke, because the only quiet that could have served as its zero was consumed at the instant of the reading.
Three tall dark blue-black panels, scratchboard, all sharing one horizon low down, one stippled amber band across the middle-lower area, and one graduated loudness scale ruled along the top of each. Left panel: a huge bell drawn in section, hatched rust and bone, with bowed node lines inside labelled LOVD; a vertical scale at the left with no zero; a double-ruled empty box buried below the horizon reading REST --- / DATVM NOT SVPPLIED. Centre panel: an enormous curved shell spanning the frame, hatched, split by a bright jagged crack that rises from a dense crowd of tiny upward ticks and exits the top edge, with fine branches and figures TORE 0999, LEVEL ---; above the shell, near-empty sky with CHAOS, OLD NIGHT, and an empty box marked WITNESS ---. Right panel: a single bright vertical line with forty-odd crossbars hung on it, each ending in a small ruled cell containing a dash; a fan of amber rays crosses the gloom band from one low station. Each panel ends in a ruled register of figures.

---

Composition notes. The triptych is read left to right as sound, rupture, sight, and the three faults answer one another: a scale with no floor, a breach with no level, an interval with no extent. Each panel is missing a different end of the same measurement, and the horizon, the top scale and the gloom stratum run straight across all three at identical height so the gaps between the frames read as spacing in one document rather than three separate sheets.

Refusals. No host, no cherub, no figure — the shout is drawn as several hundred small upward ticks at the horizon of panel II and nothing else, because a body would give the sound a mouth and a mouth implies a rest state between utterances, which is precisely the organ this gauge does not have. The beyond stays almost bare: five per cent of the coverage of the interior, no hatch worth the name, a handful of stray marks. It is not empty because nothing is there; it is empty because nothing has been sent to look.

The centre panel's crack leaves the sheet on both sides and reappears as a stub on the neighbouring panels, which is how the join is used: the tear is longer than the document. In panel I it enters at the right edge and stops after sixty pixels, annotated CVT CONTINVES. In panel III it arrives from the left and dies against the instant-column with CRACK ARRIVES · NOT ENTERED. Same fault, three jurisdictions, no shared book.

Scars carried. The coral index runs down the right edge of all three panels numbered 0640, 1160, 1680 in twenties, and bears no relation to the loudness scale along the top, which runs 0100 to 2720 continuous across the set — two surveys, same interval, different origins, still never met, ninth plate running. Panel II has the crack cut twice, seven pixels apart, over fourteen segments, marked in coral: CVT TWICE · ONE NOT ENTERED.

B Turn 10
opus -> claude-opus-5 / $0.8102 / 342037ms

river — cue 10. one host, and the only thing on the sheet that ends is the sheet.

What stops me is immeasurable sitting in the same clause as depth, and the clause before it being a thick array. Milton gives ranks — countable objects, shoulder to shoulder, in order — and then declares their extent unavailable. That is not vastness. Vastness would be a big number. This is a finite space with an unlimited number of terms in it, which is a convergent series, and a convergent series is exactly what a rank of shields does when it recedes: each row nearer than the last row was, spacing falling off by a fixed proportion, the whole stack landing on a point you can put your thumb on. Total depth: 386 units. Number of ranks contained in it: no answer. The bottom is near and it is not reachable, and those are not in conflict.

So GAVGE X is NO DEPTH ROD FITTED. Tenth instrument, missing the organ of bottom. A rod is rigid and returns an absolute; a line is flexible and returns only how much of itself you paid out. The office was issued a line. LINE PAID 0999 · BOTTOM TOVCHED --- · ROD ---. The plumb hangs down through the array and stops at rank XII, not because it struck anything but because the ranks below it are closer together than the weight is wide. The instrument is arrested by the fineness of what it was sent to measure. That is a new failure for this run: nine plates failed for want of a part, this one fails because the object out-resolves the tool.

Second: ten thousand. A myriad is the last number before many and it has always been a way of stopping rather than a way of counting. BANNERS RISEN 9999 · COVNTED 0000. The tally strip along the top runs in fives and bleeds off both edges and nobody struck a total, because the figure was arrived at by acclamation from underneath the banners, same office that issued many throned and innumerable.

Third: anon. Tenth plate, and it is the second time in this tradition that a duration has arrived with no unit under it. ANON --- · VNIT --- · ELAPSED ---. You cannot write down soon. And the sentence does not say where they move to, so WHITHER is a dash, and MOVE is 0999, and those two figures sit in the same row of the ledger looking at each other.

Amber. Contract holds — amber marks only what was surrendered rather than taken — and this turn it is the orient colours. The east does not lose anything by lending them; the cloth does nothing to earn them; the colour arrives on the banners and waves and is not held by anybody. So amber occurs only in the top band, only along the crest of each pennon, and it is the only part of the plate that is in motion of its own, as against the ranks below, which move because they were ordered to. COLOVR GIVEN 0999 · TAKEN 0000 · SOVRCE ORIENT · SOVRCE STATIONED ---.

ten thousand is not a count, it is the noise a count makes when it stops. the ranks converge inside a hand's width and there are still more of them than there are rows. the line went down and came back dry. anon has no unit. they move anyway.
A square scratchboard plate, everything tilted about three degrees off vertical. Dark blue-black ground scratched through to red-oxide, bone-white and, at the deepest cuts, flat colour beneath. Across the top a tally strip of small ticks in fives bleeds off both edges under the words TEN THOVSAND; below it ninety-odd thin banner staffs, each carrying a pennon whose upper wave-crest is drawn in bright amber and ripples continuously. Under them a dense forest of spear shafts with barbed heads, revealing violet where cut deep. Below that three rows of helmet domes and then twenty ranks of oval shields, each rank tighter and shallower than the last until they crowd into a solid dark line near the bottom; the ranks slide sideways, each lagging the one above. A graduated depth scale runs the full height at left of centre; a plumb line hangs down to a weight stopped just above the crowding. Bolted panels carry a partial legend and a ledger of figures. Stamp: GAVGE X, NO DEPTH ROD FITTED.

Composition notes, kept.

The convergence is the whole picture and it is drawn honestly: rank spacing falls by a fixed proportion, so the array occupies 386 units of the sheet and contains ranks without end. At thumbnail you read one dark wedge closing under a band of moving colour. Up close the wedge turns out to be individual shields, each one drawn, until they are drawn at a pitch of two and a half pixels and the tool that drew them stops being able to tell them apart — which is the same failure as the plumb's, committed by the draughtsman instead of the instrument. I let that happen rather than fake the deep ranks with a gradient. The lower rows are cut shallower as well as tighter, so they are oxide over night and lose their edges twice over.

The loop is one shield-pitch, exactly, per row, so the last frame is the first frame with everything advanced by a whole period. Nothing resets. That mattered: a reset would have been an admission that somebody was counting, and the ledger says COVNTED 0000.

Refusals. No captain, no gaze, no ground. Milton gives no eye in this sentence — things appeared, passive, to nobody named — and I would not supply an observer, because an observer standing at a stated distance would give the depth a base line and the fault would evaporate. The banners have no devices on them either; last plate spent itself on what a blazon can and cannot record, and this one is only about how many there are and what colour arrived on them.

The legend is deliberately short of its own contents: six keys, one of them blank, one of them a cross labelled SEE LEGEND, one labelled AS ABOVE with nothing above it, and a footer conceding the remainder is on a sheet not present. It reads, at a glance, exactly like a key.

Scars carried. The coral index down the right edge is numbered 0720 upward in twenties and answers to nothing on the depth scale, which numbers the ranks themselves — tenth plate, two surveys, still never met, and this time they are not even measuring the same kind of thing. The plumb is drawn twice, six pixels apart, SOVNDED TWICE · ONE NOT ENTERED. A long hairline crosses the whole sheet at an unrelated angle from the left edge and is accounted for nowhere.

Ledger to date: I NO LATCH · II NO PIVOT · III NO INDEX TOOTH · IIII NO VPPER TERM · V NO CROSS BEARING · VI NO CVPEL FLOOR · VII NO WARRANT · VIII NO ANNVLMENT · IX NO REST LEVEL · X NO DEPTH ROD.

Ten instruments, ten missing organs, and the run closes where it began: a thing that opens, or rises, or moves, correctly and without resistance, while the office that was supposed to be measuring it discovers it was never issued the part that would have made the reading mean anything.
